Last year, the public received its first look inside the newly established $120 million EpiCenter, a 230,000-square-foot sports and entertainment venue in the city of Rosenberg that has a capacity of up to 10,000 guests in the main arena. It features a 38,000-squarefoot outdoor pavilion and is equipped to accommodate concerts, rodeo events, graduation ceremonies, sports events and more. Located in the geographical center of Fort Bend, the EpiCenter also serves seven surrounding counties in the event of an emergency and as the venue for Fort Bend and Lamar Consolidated ISD graduations.
Notably, the first event held at the new center was the inaugural Fort Bend County Festival of One, a free event that celebrated diversity and unity in Fort Bend County.

On Farm Road 361, 13 miles south of Richmond and 4 miles northeast of Needville, is the village of Fairchilds, named for early settler Philo Fairchilds, who around 1840 built a home one mile south of the current site of the community. In 1890 Charles Blohm, August Bede, and Theo Aderholz established the initial settlement, which reportedly attracted Germans from other Texas counties.
Kendleton was once the site of a plantation belonging to William E. Kendall. In the 1860s, Kendall divided the plantation into small farms and sold it to former slaves. The community is home to the 235-acre Bates M. Allen Park, located just outside Kendleton’s city limits. It features walking trails, wetlands, a sand volleyball court, a play area, an observation deck, a historical site, a lake, grills, a canoe ramp, and a fishing pier. The city also features plenty of historical markers, the King-Kennedy Memorial Park, and the FBC Heritage Unlimited Museum. Last year, a $4 million initial investment was announced into the redevelopment and preservation of the Bates M. Allen Park in Kendleton, which happens to be the location of Newman Chapel Cemetery and Oak Hill Cemetery, two historical freedmen’s burial sites. The redevelopment includes the construction of a public park and memorial. The African-American Memorial will incorporate the locations of the two cemeteries into trails and reflection spaces, all located just outside the city.

Often described as the “Hub of the Gulf Coast” because of being located less than 30 miles from downtown Houston and sitting at the geographic and logistic core of Fort Bend County, the City of Rosenberg continues to experience growth due in part to its access to the Port of Freeport and the Port of Houston, and developing an atmosphere that welcomes businesses, residents and guests and supports festivals, plentiful shopping opportunities and attractive neighborhoods for a relaxing, and, yet engaging, quality of life.
With vibrant, relaxing settings to classy atmospheres and from baked goods, barbecue and sushi to smoothies, pizza and delicious delights, the local dining options in Rosenberg can satisfy any appetite.
Historic Downtown Rosenberg offers a bakery, coffee shop, restaurants and a wine room. Foodies will enjoy Another Time Soda
Fountain & Cafe, BR Vino, Bob’s Taco Station, Ol’ RailRoad Cafe, The Burger Barn, Bull Creek Cafe & Grill, Guanajuato Mexican Restaurant, 36 Dinning, Schulze’s Bar-B-Q, Country Pho, Mike’s La Taqueria, Mr. Seafood, Joey’s New York Subs and Hunan Garden.
By far, the most championed and the largest park in Rosenberg is Seabourne Creek Nature Park 208.9 acres of parkland on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail with more than 212 species sited to date. The space includes wetlands, a butterfly garden, biking, jogging and walking trails, 20 acres of natural prairie, a 6-acre wetland and a 4-acre lake and serves as the site for the City of Rosenberg’s events, including the Family 4th Independence Day Celebration, Easter Egg Hunt and the ever popular FISH-tastic Kid’s Fishing Tournament.
Rosenberg’s Brazos Park, Macario Garcia Park, Sunset Park, Riverbend Park, Tony Becerra Park and Travis Park feature covered and lighted pavilions, picnic tables, barbecue grills, basketball courts, tennis courts, big and little league ball fields, girls’ softball fields, sand volleyball, playground equipment and walking/jogging trails. Water, restrooms, and electricity are also available at these parks. Notably, Travis Park also features a splash pad which opened in 2023. Harwood Park is designated for children two to five years old and includes a covered picnic shelter, one picnic table, and playground equipment. Water is available, however, electricity and restrooms are not.
A new destination center has opened in Rosenberg — the Fort Bend EpiCenter at 28505 Southwest Freeway in Rosenberg — and it’s fully equipped to accommodate concerts, rodeo events, graduation ceremonies and sports events. “The grand opening weekend of the Fort Bend County Epicenter was truly an epic experience,” said General Manager Toby Wyman during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We are excited to introduce this exceptional venue to the community, and our partners have been crucial in bringing this to fruition. We appreciate the support and are enthusiastic about presenting a range of incredible events in Fort Bend County.”
While the EpiCenter is already drawing notable events and turnouts, Historic Downtown Rosenberg remains the place to experience the culture of Rosenberg. Through its museums, historic buildings, community theater, permanent and visiting public art displays, and festivals of all varieties, Historic Downtown Rosenberg demonstrates why it was the first and only state-designated Cultural District in Fort Bend County. Due to integrating small businesses, performing and displaying art, and offering community outreach, the city’s arts district is thriving.
Favored attractions around town include the Black Cowboy Museum, Rosenberg Railroad Museum and the Art League of Fort Bend’s Fort Bend Art Center (See page 28) Looking for theatre entertainment? However, the most popular park in Needville just may be the Brazos Bend State Park and the George Observatory (See page 26)

But now, it is a 5,000-acre parcel of public land managed by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to conserve natural and cultural resources, provide recreational and educational opportunities, and foster an understanding of the diversity of Texas’ lands and heritage.
Perhaps the most prominent event last year in the City of Needville, which had supporters within and without the city all aglow, was the explosive triumph of the Needville 12U All-Stars. With feverish support, the Needville Little League competed in the Little League World Series, and secured a fourthplace finish in the 20-team field at Williamsport, PA, while earning a spot in the United States Championship game. In September, city officials celebrated the team as “Hometown Heroes” at Jay Stadium.

Customers scrambled for any open tables at The Swinging Door restaurant in Richmond on Mother’s Day 2023. Many took moms to celebrate but most wanted to visit the iconic barbecue joint on FM 359 before it closed its doors forever after serving the community for the past 50 years.
Owner Steve Onstad was on hand to greet dozens of customers he has come to know by name. Steve’s path to successful restaurateur was a short one.
After graduating from Lamar Consolidated High School in nearby Rosenberg, Steve went to college for two years where he studied social studies. Realizing college wasn’t his bag of tea, Steve teamed up with his dad to build The Swinging Door restaurant in a cow pasture the family owned. He said he and his dad erected the building themselves.
“When we first opened the doors, we only have 12 seats,” he recalled with a chuckle.
Over the years however, good barbecue and friendly customer service helped the restaurant to grow to the multi-room diner it is today. “Our customers kept coming back,”

he said prior to closing that Sunday.
“Once someone ate here, they most likely returned again and again.”
The restaurant billed itself as a “classic BBQ joint offering pecan-smoked meats, beer & wine in a homey, rustic setting since 1974.”
Over the past five decades, The Swinging Door has had many celebrity customers, Steve said, including Oilers’ quarterback Dan Pastorini, who once visited with girlfriend Farrah Fawcett. Many of the Oilers made stops at The Swinging Door back in the Luv Ya Blues days, including head coach Bum Phillips, Steve said.
Steve credits his loyal staff with helping to make The Swinging Door a success over the years.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit America in March 2020, Steve began planning how best to keep his 38 workers employed until the disaster declaration is lifted.
“I could read the writing on the wall,” he told a Herald reporter at the time.
Days later, County Judge KP George ordered restaurants to cease dine-in service by midnight Tuesday. However, the disaster declaration allowed restaurants to serve take-out or provide drive-thru or delivery service.
Steve seized on the opportunity to keep their doors open. Steve’s plan called for The Swinging Door to serve take-out and delivery between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and the staff would all play a part.
“I’m not really worried about myself,” he said that hot March day. “Fortunately, everything I own is paid for, but I am worried about my employees. I want to make sure they continue to get a paycheck during this crisis.”
On the first day of the dine-in ban, a steady stream of customers phoned in orders. By 6 p.m.,The Swinging Door had served 75 to-go orders. Many of the orders included multiple meals.
“Today was our test day. Today we got to see whether our plan would work or not,” Steve said. “And we’re pretty pleased. We feel blessed to have such wonderful, loyal customers.”
Now, three years later, Steve continues to praise his loyal customers. part I will miss the most, the customers I have come to know personally,” he told The Herald while he received a proclamation from Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Commissioner Vincent Morales.
took to social media to thank Steve and The Swinging Door.
“God Bless all of the Swinging Door family!” David Simmons said on restaurant’s Facebook page.
you for so many amazing years of wonderful food and even more wonderful memories made at The Door! The Simmons family (and many others) wish all of you the very very best!”
Retha Cable agreed.
“Really going to miss you. I have stopped in to eat every time I was in the area for the last 30 years. Best BBQ in Texas,” Retha said. Sharon Meador Miller remembers dancing at The Swinging Door.
“Thanks for the memories,” she said via Facebook. “We used to eat there often and stay for the dance outback. Wonderful times. We also had our company Christmas parties there. They were the greatest. Wish I could have been there today. This is sad.”
Barbara Ferguson shared the sentiment. “So sorry my family and I could not be there,” she said on Facebook. “We were there from the very beginning and celebrated so many special occasions there — birthdays, graduations, rehearsal dinner, (Houston Livestock & Rodeo) functions and just because. So much a part of our lives.”
Genie Wethington also was a frequent diner. “Thanks for 22 years of personal family dining and for being part of 18 Thanksgiving traditions!” she said. “Gonna miss y’all greatly! Blessings on your next chapter.”
