It is our role as the Chamber to ensure that our community is thriving, that our members are gathering to get to know one another, and to support the best interests of our business community.
I am often told that our community is bigger than ourselves, and I would have to agree. The abundance of natural resources, stellar restaurants, charming shops, opportunities for employment, and small-town hospitality is what makes Rockbridge a wonderful place to live, work, and play. In this annual guide you will hear stories of the past that are woven into stories of today; those who have fallen into or stumbled upon a wonderful place to call home. We hope that you will visit, explore, and fall in love with our community, just like we all have!
Cheers!

Rockbridge County is named for the Natural Bridge of Virginia, located in the southern part of the county. The county was created in 1777, split off from Augusta County to the north. Lexington was established as the county seat. Lexington became an independent city in 1965. Buena Vista was chartered a city in 1892 following a dramatic growth in population fueled by a speculative boom in the western part of Virginia.

Volunteerism is alive and well here in Rockbridge. Looking out my office window, I see several dozen middle school students going around town pulling weeds, picking up trash and planting tulips in the downtown planters of Lexington. This was organized by Main Street Lexington in partnership with the Lexington City Schools. Our area has more than 125 non-profit organizations. That is an amazing number for a community the size of ours.
Local volunteer and civic groups add immeasurably to the quality of life in the Rockbridge area. From summer concerts in Lexington and Buena Vista parks; the Freedom Food Festival, featuring celebrity chefs and kitchens teaming up to raise money for local non-profits; our Rockbridge CAN community dinners where ‘everyone is welcome and dinner is always free’ to the Downtown Bike Parade, Christmas Tree Lighting, Festival of Trees, holiday parades and a myriad of other events and programs, Rockbridge area residents are involved in this community.
Residents at Kendal at Lexington sit on many local boards and serve in a variety of capacities in local organizations. And, it’s not just retirees that are involved in our community. Young people here also volunteer and serve on boards. You’ll always see friendly students helping out at RARA’s Community Grocery, Lex-Rock Jaycee volunteers host the Rockbridge Community Festival, the Friday’s Alive Summer Concerts in Davidson Park and the Thanksgiving Gobble Wobble 5-k Run, using funds raised to support the efforts of local charities. Lime Kiln Theater was revived by a group of young people led by Spencer McElroy several years ago. The board of Hull’s Drive-in, our local non-profit outdoor movie theatre, has a diversity of ages and stages serving.
Another local tradition is the annual Rockbridge Christmas Basket program where funds are raised throughout the year to buy food for local families in need and toys for their children at the holidays. Every year, hundreds of volunteers gather at the Virginia Horse Center to pack tons of food and toys, serving 1,200 families across Rockbridge County. Rockbridge Christmas Baskets traces back to 1948, when the Lexington Woman’s Club and the Lexington Junior Woman’s Club started the Santa Claus Truck to deliver food and toys to needy families at the holidays.
The natural beauty of the area is another of the many attributes that attract people to relocate here. Our climate with its four distinct seasons, access to The Chessie Trail, Glen Maury Park, Natural Bridge State Park and various outdoor recreational activities are also a draw. Our four colleges and universities have a strong impact on our community members, providing intellectual stimulation in the form of speakers, exhibits, concerts and events, most of which they generously open to the public.
Most folks love living in the Rockbridge area, and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Involvement in community and forming personal relationships that grow out of common interests is a big reason why. Rockbridge may not be unique in this, but our community is worth celebrating — here’s to this tradition continuing into the future.
Many community organizations are seeking volunteers to help them with their missions and to serve on their boards of directors. See the list of community organizations that are Chamber members on pages 49 and 50 in the Directory section of this guide and get involved.

Just 30 miles north of Rockbridge County, the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD) offers the Valley convenient access to the world with daily flights onboard Contour Airlines to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and seamless connections beyond on American Airlines. All flights to/from SHD can be booked on AA.com from beginning to final destination in one transaction. On the day of your flight, enjoy complimentary parking close to the terminal, a quick check-in process, and worry-free luggage transportation. Travel from SHD is a far more convenient and cost-effective option than using a larger airport.

For years, Rockbridge County has been developing into a hotspot for retirement, and with good reason too. From the many community volunteer programs and festive downtown events to the county’s quiet hiking trails and good ol’ Virginian camaraderie, Rockbridge County inspires folks to stay active and community-focused throughout their retirement.
Kendal at Lexington is a retirement community, offering homes for independent retirees and those in need of assisted living. As a Life Plan (CCRC) community, Kendal at Lexington is one of twelve Kendal seniorliving facilities located throughout the United States.
The retirement facility has attracted local and migrant retirees to Lexington, many of whom have embraced Rockbridge County as their home, contributing their talents and energy to the broader Rockbridge community.
Kendal resident Dennis Bussey embodies the active lifestyle of a typical Kendal retiree. After just two years of moving to the area, Bussey has been brightening the area in a unique way — by cleaning gravestones!
Collaborating with groups such as the Lexington Woman’s Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Historic Lexington Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, Washington & Lee students, Bussey has cleaned gravestones at five of the county’s cemeteries.
His goal is to receive permission from the city councils of Lexington and Buena Vista for the cities’ cemeteries, and to gain access to the 29 cemeteries in Rockbridge County.
While cemeteries and the history behind the gravestone are a passion of Bussey’s now, they weren’t always. Originally from San Diego, CA, Bussey moved to Richmond, VA to be with his children and grandchildren, and at the time, he didn’t know much about the historical significance of the capitol. It was in Richmond where he was exposed to centuries of history along the hiking trails he would walk. “In Richmond, you’re walking over history all the time,” Bussey said in an interview in March.
He enjoyed exploring historic Richmond, but at first, he wasn’t looking for a job as a historian, he was searching for a hiking group. Dennis became the administrator for a MeetUp group named the Cary Street Hikers, which he later renamed to James River Hikers. What began as a group of seven people has now grown into a MeetUp group of 4,936 members.
One of the trails along the James River that Bussey would lead his crew edged a dilapidated stone structure — a mill built by William Fousheé, Richmond’s first mayor. Finding the history interesting, Bussey did his research and was able to share his knowledge on the group’s next hike; One of the hikers gave Dennis the idea to begin giving history tours while they hike. Liking this idea, Dennis once again renamed his MeetUp organization to James River Hikers — Hiking with History.
This version of the group began taking public service initiatives, serving Richmond by cleaning graffiti off bridges and maintaining invasive plants. Their next step was raising the capital to get a historic plaque for the William Fousheé mill. Bussey wanted to dig deeper into the past of Fousheé, so he took his crew to Shockoe Hill Cemetery to visit the grave of the old mayor. Bussey was dismayed by how weathered Fousheé’s headstone was, immediately inquiring the rules of cleaning it.
After that, they moved through the rest of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, cleaning hundreds of gravestones since Fousheé’s.
Bussey quickly learned that the process for cleaning grimy headstones is much easier than one might think, especially with a biodegradable chemical solution called D2. In five easy steps, Bussey gets immediate gratification as 30 percent of the stone’s imperatives are removed; first he soaks the dry stone with D2, then sprays the stone with water, and waits for fifteen minutes. He returns to the stone and uses a softbristle brush to scrub the stone, and finally he re-sprays it with D2. With time, the headstone will become even cleaner as the chemical gnaws away at the germs and protects it against future corrosion.
Bussey has faced some setbacks with this endeavor. Having met with various members of Lexington City Council, Bussey has been told that he must contact the families of whom the gravestones belong for permission to clean the stone. Bussey respects Council’s caution, saying, “Every one of these cemeteries and every one of these stones is sacred ground.” While Bussey commends Council for wanting to respect the families, he does admit that it is extremely difficult to locate them even with city records.
Bussey shifted his priorities to the gravestones of veterans, which resonates with him as a Vietnam veteran himself. After working closely with Councilmember Marilyn Alexander, Bussey received permission to clean veteran headstones in both municipal cemeteries – Oakgrove Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery.
Often, Dennis receives requests to clean the gravestones of parents and relatives of his neighbors at Kendal, to which he grabs his D2 and soft-bristle brush.
The once-sleepy, rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley have quickly become the pulsating heartbeat of Virginia’s wine and beer industry, captivating locals, and tourists alike. Developing into one of the area’s leading industries, the many vineyards, breweries, and cideries offer patrons a variety of ways to spend a relaxing afternoon in Rockbridge County. For visitors, these businesses sell the county’s easygoing culture. For locals, these places create an atmosphere that perpetuates and fosters our vibrant community.
The Shenandoah Valley is a prime location for these grape-growers, beer-brewers and cider-makers.
The mountain air and sun benefit the industry in more ways than grape production. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail, all of these venues are ready-made with an incredible view. Whether you’re celebrating a long day of hiking with a nice cold beer, or grabbing an after-work beverage, the outdoor dining experience offered by Rockbridge County’s vineyards and breweries soothes the soul and enables all guests to connect with the area’s lush nature.
Local wineries and breweries compete with those across the state, returning from contests year after year with resounding accolades. Recently, Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery, Jump Mountain Vineyard, and Ecco Adesso Vineyard all received awards from the Virginia Governor’s Cup — one of the highest regarded competitions in the state.
Naturally, its soil is rich with nutrients like limestone. Virginia’s temperate climate proves essential to grape production as water drains freely through the soft, warm soil and the warmer temperatures allow grapes to ripen more easily, resulting in higher sugar levels, higher alcohol content, and a richer flavor.
In fact, the rural character of Rockbridge County was an inspiration for several of the vintners in the area, including Mary Hughes and David Vermillion who named their vineyard after a celebrated peak in Goshen Pass, Jump Mountain.
The rise of the craft beer and wine industry in Virginia has only occurred within the last 20 years. The first wave of wineries exploded in the 1970s, and by the early 1990s, there were about 40 wineries in the state. Now, there are approximately 400 wineries.
The success of the Shenandoah Valley doesn’t stop there. While visiting vineyards and breweries is an afternoon experience, the joy of a Jump Mountain “Borderland” or a Devil’s Backbone “Vienna Lager” can be found available for retail and enjoyed in the comforts of home.
Businesses thrive in Rockbridge County, and if the many wineries and breweries in the area prove one thing, it’s that a community oriented around neighborly camaraderie is critical to growth and success.
Tara Orebaugh — general manager of Ecco Adesso Vineyard — said it best, “Everything in Rockbridge County is about community and camaraderie. We rely on each other’s support, wholeheartedly. We have so much appreciation for our Vine to Wine Club members, guests, neighbors, the North Rockbridge Trail, and local businesses. It truly takes a village in more ways than one.”
Adding to the diversity of beer choices in Rockbridge are Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery in the southern part of Rockbridge, which opened in 2016. Lexington’s only downtown microbrewery, Heliotrope, opened on Main Street in 2019. Featuring a rotating menu of brews, sourdough pizza, salads and appetizers, many with ingredients locally-sourced, it has become a popular with locals and visitors. Rockbridge Vineyard added a brewery to the existing winery in 2020.
Alongside the wine industry’s expansion in Rockbridge, entrepreneurs began starting small breweries and cideries. Both are a natural in this rural county. Good water and good soil for growing apples and pears make for a good product, and local brewers and cider makers have taken advantage.
The first local microbrewery was Blue Lab Brewing, which opened in 2011 but closed six years later. But other brewers were looking at the area as possible sites. Devils Backbone Brewing Co., which started in Nelson County in 2008 as a microbrewery and restaurant, was expanding and looking for a location for a production brewery. Rockbridge County offered the advantages of good water, access to transportation, and a great site for both the brewery and tasting room. Devils Backbone opened its Outpost brewery in 2012, and has expanded multiple times since. One expansion added a much larger taproom, kitchen and indoor and outdoor dining areas.
Cider has become a popular alternative to beer and wine, and Rockbridge’s Halcyon Days Cider Co. is a must if you like the crisp taste of apple or pear cider. Produced from the fruit of heirloom trees, Halcyon offers an array of ciders from dry to sweeter. The cidery itself is a story, with production in a 1940s milking barn and the tasting room in an 1860s log cabin relocated to the property.
The Lexington and Rockbridge Area Tourism Office is a robust force in the county that advocates for local businesses, giving them tools and resources to expand. Among other things, the tourism office has offered customer service training and recruited writing groups that have brought media attention to the area.
In Rockbridge County, neighbors help neighbors.
Proprietors share their commodities amongst each other keeping their products local to the area. Rather than competing against each other, they band together. The North Rockbridge Trail — which features Ecco Adesso Vineyard, Jump Mountain Vineyard, and Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery — maps out a tourist itinerary of northern Rockbridge and the must-see places in the area.
Whether you’re a tourist or a local, a wine lover or a beer drinker, a 21 year old or a 71 year old, you’ll find peace in the rolling mountains of the Shenandoah Valley.

The extensive facility at Devils Backbone’s location north of Lexington encompasses The Outpost Taproom and Kitchen, beer production and the separate packaging building.
Not far off in Raphine, near the steady drone of vehicles on I-81 but hidden by the blinding lights of truck stops and gas stations, there’s an old, quaint dairy farm. Though, anyone driving by will be surprised to see 18 acres of grape vines as opposed to grazing dairy cows. They’ll notice too, this isn’t just any old grape farm but Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery — the winery that has been transforming the viticulture industry in Rockbridge County since 1993.
Originally from Williamsburg, Owner and Vintner Shep Rouse came to the Shenandoah Valley with a dream of establishing his own business and becoming a renowned winemaker. He grew up visiting Rockbridge County as a child at Camp Maxwelton, and later returned as a student attending Washington and Lee University.
Rouse truly fell in love with the wine business after traveling to Germany for a year post-graduation. When he returned to the United States, Rouse attended UC Davis where he received a master’s degree in Enology, the study of fermentation.
His dreams turned into reality; in 1989, Rouse and his wife, Jane, planted five acres of grapevines. Now, Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery consists of 18 acres and some apple trees for its developing cidery.
Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery has available still and sparkling wine, approximately eight beers on tap, and a few batches of hard cider. The winery is open to guests seven days a week and the brewery is open for business four days out of the week. Throughout the season, the vineyard hosts live music and festivals featuring vendors, artists and craftsmen, and food trucks. Wine production began at 400 cases of wine a year. Eventually, production increased to 10,000 cases a year, but has been reduced to 6000 cases as a result of the post-pandemic economy. The Raphine vineyard offers a dynamic wine selection from Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Vignoles.
Jane Rouse attributes Rockbridge Vineyard’s long-term success to their staff. She said, “…we have amazing staff and always have had. Shep makes excellent wine. Our staff know it well and enjoy serving it to our guests. When people come into our tasting and tap rooms, they are welcomed as guests and our goal is to be sure they leave having had a relaxing, interesting, and enjoyable time.”
Take a deep breath, find comfort in a beautiful view, and let your shoulders relax with the first sip of an Ecco Adesso Chardonnay.
Meaning “Here Now,” Cierra and Michael Weatherly invested in the vineyard in 2020 when they needed an escape from the Covid world. The Appalachian Mountains surrounding their farm at Skyline Meadows near Fairfield proved to be the perfect place for the couple to relax, explore nature, and raise their children.
Originally from Nelson County, the Weatherlys were inspired by the quaint European vineyards they enjoyed in their travels abroad, and they found the same spirit in the rolling mountains of the Blue Ridge.
Ecco Adesso Vineyard is a 350-acre operation with 150 of those acres open to guests, and what began as one acre of grapevines has quickly expanded into 20. Ecco Adesso produces 12 of its own grape varieties — including but not limited to Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Riesling, and Merlot. While most of the vineyard’s production takes place on-site, they do collaborate with their sister winery, Williamsburg Winery.
The Fairfield farm has received numerous awards for its wines. Most recently, the vineyard won first place in the 2024 Virginia Governor’s Cup for its 2022 New World Virginia Chardonnay. It also received silver medals for its 2021 Primo Bianco Chardonnay Weatherly Family Reserve, 2022 New World Virginia Cabernet Franc, and the 2022 Old World Virginia Chardonnay as well as a bronze medal for the 2022 Old World Virginia Cabernet Franc.
Ecco Adesso takes the word ‘vineyard’ to the next level, opening the property to guest boarding, weddings and events, and tastings in the winery. With four guest houses, the Weatherlys invite visitors to stay and, “…leave all their troubles at the gate and enjoy their family, friends, and all that nature has to offer.”
Ecco Adesso also does its fair share of giving-back to the community through Vet First Inc., which employs veterans to maintain the property and its gardens. All of the crops grown by the veterans are donated to local food banks. Ecco Adesso and the veterans of Vet First Inc. have donated about 7000 pounds of food with a goal to donate one billion pounds by 2032.
Ahidden gem nestled in the rolling hills of Rockbridge Baths is Jump Mountain Vineyard. Owned by Mary Hughes and David Vermillion, the vineyard strives to produce European-style wines authentic to the character of rural Rockbridge County.
The couple purchased the 32-acre farm in 2006 with a horticultural dream to grow grapes throughout their retirement. In 2008, they planted the vineyard’s first grapevine, which quickly flourished into the operation it is today — maintaining three acres of grapes, manufacturing and selling wines, and hosting weekend tastings at the winery. Jump Mountain wine is now also sold at retail in local stores and restaurants.
Ninety-five percent of Jump Mountain’s grapes are grown on the property with the rest being sourced from Mulberry Grove Vineyard in Brownsburg. Hughes takes pride in their experimentation with unusual grape varieties, including reds grapes like Tannat, Lagrein, and Refosco, and whites like Gruner Veltliner, an Austrian white grape known for being rich in flavor.
Jump Mountain’s dynamic wine selection has earned multiple awards with their most recent accomplishment being first place in the 2023 Shenandoah Cup Wine Competition. The Shenandoah Cup celebrates winemakers and superior grapegrowing conditions in the Shenandoah Valley. Jump Mountain has also been acknowledged for their 2019 red wine, “Borderland.”
Before the vineyard, Hughes and Vermillion were both employed at the University of Virginia — Vermillion as a technical analyst in the school’s Information Technology department and Hughes as a language professor and then as a landscape architect.
Situated with a view of the property’s namesake, the couple settled in the area for the soil, which is rich in sandstone and limestone and has proven to benefit their grapes.
Hughes attributes some of the vineyard’s success to the “tremendous support” of the Rockbridge County community from neighbors and other local wineries to the Lexington-Rockbridge Tourism Board and the North Rockbridge Trail association.
While Jump Mountain Vineyard is closed to the public throughout the winter season, on-site operations resume in April, bringing back delicious European-style wines to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
In Colonial America, cider was the most common beverage, and even children drank it in a diluted form. In many places, the water was not safe to drink and most homesteads had an apple orchard. Pressing and fermenting fresh apple juice was the easiest way to preserve the large fruit harvest. In rural communities, taxes, wages and tithes were often paid in cider. It was also the basis for other products, such as vinegar, which was used to preserve fresh foods and for other purposes around the farm.
In this American tradition, Halcyon Days Cider Company is a unique addition to Rockbridge’s locavore/craft beverage scene. Halcyon Days makes small batches of hard cider using over 50 varieties of apples from the 2000 trees on the property seven miles south of Lexington on Rt. 11.
The family owners grow, pick, and press the apples for juice, ferment and then mature the cider for two to six months. They then carbonate, bottle and label each batch by hand.
The many varieties of apples allows the cidermaker to create a variety of flavors and to control the sweetness of the final product. Typically, the cidery will have up to a dozen varieties of their ciders for tasting and purchase, ranging from semisweet to dry. Their focus is primarily to use heirloom cider apple varieties in their blends. The alcohol content varies, but is similar to that of craft beers.
The cidery is the first in Rockbridge County, but part of a chain of Virginia cideries in an informal ‘Cider Trail.”
While the cidermaking is accomplished in a new state-of-the-art production building, the rest of the facility is refurbished from historic Rockbridge County structures. An existing 1940s milk barn that was used in dairy farming in an earlier use of the property has been renovated into seating space and a large family game room. A covered breezeway connects the milk barn building to the tasting room, which is in a reconstructed 19th century log cabin moved to the site from North Mountain.
If making hand-crafted ciders in a unique setting wasn’t enough, the grove of dwarf apple trees on the knoll above the cidery is a story in itself. The trees grow along wires, much like those at vineyards, and the grove itself is laid out in the design of a labyrinth. The labyrinth, which is a larger version of the same design the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France, and leads one on a continuous path to the center at the top of the hill. Historically, the 13th century labyrinth at Chartres is representative of a pilgrim’s quest for the holy land, and the design has been duplicated in many places.
Beer drinkers can be very loyal to their favorite brew. Many Rockbridge residents claim loyalty to their own locally-produced Vienna Lager, brewed by Devils Backbone Brewing Co. And we are not alone — Men’s Journal named Vienna Lager one of the “Best 100 Beers in the World,” and Food & Wine included it in its list of “50 Best American Lagers.” Besides Vienna Lager, Devils Backbone produces an array of perennial and seasonal beers, and has branched out into distilling and selling prepared packaged cocktails as well.
Devils Backbone Brewing Co. was started in Nelson County, just over the Blue Ridge from Rockbridge in 2008. The founders, Steve and Heidi Crandall, had sampled craft beers on a ski trip in the Alps, and were amazed at the flavors. The small facility near Wintergreen grew rapidly, and the company needed a larger production facility with good water, land and access to transportation. They found the perfect spot in 2012 about two miles north of Lexington. Called The Outpost, the facility has expanded and expanded again. Originally projected to produce 10,000 barrels of beer in its first decade, the Outpost instead produced almost 45,000 barrels in its first three years.
Besides the brewery itself, The Outpost features a taproom and kitchen, with indoor and outdoor dining. Live music and trivia nights add to the fun.
In 2016, The Crandalls sold the company to Anheuser-Busch, joining a portfolio of breweries within The High End, A-B’s business unit comprising craft and import brands. Some people, while not necessarily upset by the sale, wondered, why do it now?
Here, too, Crandall had an answer. “There’s a life cycle to growing a brewery,” he explained. “It’s an incredibly fast-growing business — Devils Backbone will be receiving its second award this year for the fastest growing manufacturing company in Virginia. Not only that, DBB is among the fastest growing craft breweries in the country. We could have stayed static, but that would have been the death knell for our business. You can’t survive if you do that. We were built to grow.”
The sale to Anheuser-Busch doesn’t appear to have dimmed the appeal of Devils Backbone’s beers and other products, and the added capacity has made the company’s offerings available over a much wider area. Vienna Lager, DB’s signature IPA, Eight Point, and many other of its beers and spirits can be found all over the Mid-Atlantic area.
Today, Devils Backbone is one of the larger employers in the Rockbridge area .
Enjoying a pint and a plate of food on The Outpost’s deck overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains on a warm summer evening, right here where the magic happens is pretty special.
Oh, and the derivation of the name, Devils Backbone? That was the name given to these steep mountains by colonial surveyors, including Peter Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson’s father, in the early 1700s.

“Wine cheers the sad, revives the old, inspires the young, makes the weary forget his toil.”
— Lord Byron“Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer.
Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.”
— Dave BarryThe downtowns of both Lexington and Buena Vista are much more vibrant that many small towns in America, partly because they both have Virginia Main Street-affiliated organizations. Both are college towns, which also makes a difference in maintaining a healthy downtown area. The Main Street program adds a level of organization and focus to preserving a community’s downtown.
The Virginia Main Street Program uses a proven “Four Point Approach” created by Main Street America to achieve economic revitalization in the context of historic preservation. The Main Street Approach is centered around Transformation Strategies, which articulates a focused, deliberate path to revitalizing or strengthening a downtown or commercial district’s economy. The program is organized around four points: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.
Main Street Lexington, traces back to a group called Lexington Rising, formed in 2013 with the specific goal of resurrecting an organization similar to the defunct Lexington Downtown Development Association (LDDA.) LDDA was the organization that qualified the city to be a Designated Virginia Main Street community from the 1990s until 2006.
The organizers of Lexington Rising saw the void that LDDA had left. There was mounting concern in early 2013 about the increase in storefront vacancies in downtown Lexington. A small group of downtown stakeholders and advocates determined to start a downtown organization. After meeting privately for several months, a public meeting was held in May 2013, drawing more than 50 people interested in getting involved.
The organizers saw the blueprint of the Main Street Program as an effective organizational model. By early June, an initial board of directors was formed and committee chairs were named. On the basis of the creation of the local downtown organization, Lexington had put in a bid to be selected for inclusion in the Virginia Main Street program, but wasn’t chosen, mainly due to the relative immaturity of Lexington’s program. Lexington Rising did become an Affiliate Member of the Virginia Main Street program.
The Chamber had been funded by the city to manage its downtown promotions program since the demise of LDDA. Lexington City Council negotiated a plan to transition responsibility and the associated funding to Lexington Rising pending the organization’s incorporation.
Within days, the initial board met, and decided to adopt Main Street Lexington (MSL) as its official name. By fall, Main Street Lexington was deep into planning for the Lexington Christmas Parade, taking over that event from the Chamber. MSL also created two new community events in December 2013 — Rock the Bridge, celebrating the opening of the rebuilt Nelson Street Bridge, and the Jingle Bell 5K Run. Both events continue to this day, although Rock the Bridge is now a springtime event.
Primarily on the basis of Main Street Lexington’s track record of accomplishment in partnership with the city, Lexington regained status as a designated Virginia Main Street community in March 2016.
Since its inception in 2013, Main Street Lexington has supported downtown businesses with promotions and seminars, brought people downtown with an ever-increasing slate of events, enhanced the appearance of downtown with planters, bike racks and the recently-completed Gateway Triangle Garden. It has also maintained a grant fund for local businesses for signs and awnings. A report issued on the occasion of MSL’s tenth anniversary in October 2023 said that in those ten years, MSL had welcomed 46 new businesses to downtown Lexington, distributed $295,200 in relief funds during the Covid pandemic, kept $381,000 in the downtown economy through its gift certificate program, and awarded $32,955 in signage and awning grants. Over the past ten years, MSL filled 24 vacancies in the downtown.
“With tremendous support from civic and community leaders, business and property owners, local residents and visitors — along with our staff, board and volunteers — we have worked diligently to transform downtown Lexington into a vibrant and welcoming place,” MSL executive director Rebecca Logan said. “We are thrilled with the evolution of the downtown area and how much has been accomplished over the past decade.”
And those vacant storefronts that worried people back in 2013? There are virtually no empty storefronts in Main Street Lexington’s footprint today.
Downtown Buena Vista has had its share of setbacks over the years. Flooded in 1969 and 1985, many businesses left after the second flood, leaving vacancy as a major problem. Deterioration and lack of tenants resulted in several older buildings in the downtown being torn down. Things began to change n 2017 when Roanoke developer Ed Walker bought a number of buildings in the downtown area, including the old Courtesy Motors building. He also created GOBV!, which he characterized as a “multiyear, communityoriented, non-profit real estate project.” The Covid pandemic slowed that initiative, and Walker sold off the properties to local entrepreneurs. But a seed was planted.
Mountain Gateway Community College acquired the Courtesy building, though a purchase donation from Buena Vista native Joseph Wilson, with plans to convert it into the Wilson Workforce and Entrepreneurial Center. The Advancement Foundation has converted the former Mundet-Hermitite plant into the Agricultural Innovation Center and added space for the Virginia Innovative Accelerator.

As Walker was winding down his efforts, a revitalization plan for downtown was released in early 2021. One element of the plan called for creating a Main Street program, which started up in January 2022. By the fall of 2022, there was a definite positive vibe in downtown Buena Vista. Seventeen businesses had opened, main in the downtown since the first of the year. Most of Walker’s buildings had been sold or were under contract. Five new startup businesses had opened in the Innovative Accelerator.
The US Department of Commerce awarded a $3 million grant to Mountain Gateway’s real estate foundation to help fund the redevelopment of the Courtesy Building. The Rockbridge Area Health Center opened a new medical and behavioral health office in downtown next to its existing dental clinic. Augusta Health also opened a primary care facility in downtown.
In January 2023, Main Street Buena Vista was accepted into Virginia Main Street’s Mobilizing Main Street Tier, a two-year program that helps prepare local organizations to successfully obtain the Advancing Virginia Main Street designation and Main Street America accreditation.

In February 2023, Brooke Dalton, a Buena Vista native, was hired as the Executive Director for Main Street Buena Vista. Since then, downtown has welcomed several new businesses, including Art on Magnolia, Little Beasties, Splash of Color, Asunder Coffee Roasters, Elizabeth Loughead Massage, and Salon 122 West. Under Dalton’s leadership, Main Street Buena Vista also implemented successful marketing campaigns and community events to attract more visitors and support local businesses. The revitalization efforts led to increased foot traffic and a renewed sense of community pride in downtown Buena Vista.
Main Street Buena Vista’s efforts have not only encouraged new businesses, but they have also fostered a sense of community through beautification projects. This spring, work will begin on the city’s first phase of the Town Square Project. The project aims to create a vibrant gathering space for residents and visitors alike, with plans for a farmers market pavilion, outdoor seating, green space, a stage, public restrooms and art installations. The Town Square Project is expected to further enhance the downtown area and promote economic development in Buena Vista.
Dalton said, “I love my hometown and feel fortunate to be a part of its revitalization. I’m excited about all of the new businesses that have come in and believe we have only just begun to realize our full potential. The addition of the Town Square Project will provide a central hub for community events and activities, enhancing the overall quality of life in Buena Vista. It’s amazing to see how these changes are bringing people together and instilling a greater sense of pride in our community.”

obots that milk cows, drones that check livestock and crops, GPSguided sprayers pinpoint pest problems, sensors monitor barn environments and transmit information to farmers with a text or mobile app, genetically modified crops consistently give higher yields . . .
All these whiz-bang technologies are being applied on farms in Rockbridge and yet fewer families in Rockbridge make their living from farming than did ten years ago. New technologies are doing exactly what new technologies have been doing for the past 200 years: improving labor efficiency, increasing productivity, making food cheaper, helping large farms get larger, and . . . squeezing out small farms.
Top: New equipment makes haying easier than years ago, but weather and climate still are the ultimate drivers of farm productivity.
Right: Digital displays provide much more data to farmers.
‘Agriculture is Virginia’s number one industry’ is a statement often repeated when we speak of agriculture’s importance to the region and the truth of this statement is derived from economic measures of farm output and value-added products produced in Virginia. By these conventional economic measures, agriculture’s preeminence in Virginia’s economy appears to be largely derived from the value-added poultry and pork products and the employment these food industries bring to the communities where they are located.
A look at agricultural statistics closer to home may leave one wondering about the importance of the local agriculture economy when we see just how few people in Rockbridge County actually make their living from farming. Based on an analysis of the available agricultural statistics and a knowledge of the existing farm operations in Rockbridge, one comes to the realization that probably fewer than 20 households make their living from operating a farm. If we add the households that derive a living from employment by a farm operation, Rockbridge still has fewer than 35 families that can point to production agriculture as the primary source of their income.
So why is agriculture such a big deal in Rockbridge? This publication highlights the innovation and energy of locally owned and operated businesses. In that spirit, this article spotlights a diverse and somewhat difficult to define demographic we can call “community farmers”.
A look at USDA Agricultural statistics shows us that in addition to some 17 full-time farms, Rockbridge has at least another 620 community farmers who, while depending on off-farm income, are the stewards of some 36,000 acres of cropland, 53,000 acres of pastureland, and 39,000 acres of forestland. These community farmers are the primary support for three retail farm supply outlets in Rockbridge, the sales and service of a huge inventory of equipment from chainsaws to tractors, and are patrons of a range of professional services from attorneys to veterinarians.
It is to community farmers (large and small, however one chooses to measure them) our nation now turns to help address the environmental damage we have done to our planet while functioning as a reservoir of resilience as catastrophic weather trends and international events have highlighted the fragility of our modern food system. In this light, opportunities abound for community farmers large and small and we need them all. Whether they are planting a field to pollinator-friendly plants, picking blackberries to give to a neighbor, gathering calves to sell at the local sale barn, or planting soybeans for export, our community farmers should be encouraged and empowered to feed us and steward our precious natural resources.
There is some exciting emerging technology that will help both large and small farms like GPS electronic fences that control where livestock graze, remote sensing and monitoring equipment that allows the farmer to monitor crop and animal wellbeing, and other technologies yet to be realized. But the need for old-fashioned hands-on stewardship is still the same. For instance; planting, protecting, and nurturing trees still requires people power. High quality trees strategically located that can provide shade, windbreaks, and slow the movement of storm water is an increasing need. Maintaining soil fertility and growing legumes (like clover and alfalfa) demands the eye and the hand of a human being. Fertile soils support robust plant life and legumes in particular have the ability to sequester both nitrogen and carbon from the atmosphere while enhancing soil and animal productivity and health. These are practices that benefit the planet, the locality, and any farm, large or small.
Viewed in this light, the work of our community farmers enhances the resilience of Rockbridge, empowering our community to weather the literal and figurative storms the future will inevitably bring. Community farmers are important partners that can help drive Rockbridge commerce and strengthen our communities.
What can we do to enhance this partnership? How do we empower our local farms to generate more income and further enhance their contribution to the Rockbridge community? Just remembering to accommodate farm activities on our rural roads is helpful. There are some public policy initiatives that could empower more small farms to market locally produced food products. But just as this publication raises the public’s awareness of local businesses, so too Rockbridge residents are encouraged to actively seek opportunities to buy products from local farms whenever possible. At the same time, our farmers engaged in contract poultry, dairy, beef cattle, and cash grain production are components of our national food systems and their participation in these industries provides geographic that reduces risk for our food system.
Rockbridge is blessed with a rich diversity of commerce and economic activity. Agriculture’s role in this commerce enhances diversity, resilience, and community.
