home. Terrell is a great place to shop, play and live. Here you’ll find a vibrant growing community that not only offers an abundance of attractions and activities, but also holds dear to its small town feel and traditions.

the upcoming sesquicentennial year, Terrell will celebrate 150 years of rich history. As a city, we will remember the past, but look forward to the many opportunities that the future holds for our vibrant community.

is an extraordinary community—one where city and community leaders come together for coffee once a week and brainstorm about the future. We are a community of culture where E! Terrell brings in world-class performances to a stateof-the-art facility. And perhaps most importantly, we are a community of giving as evidenced by our countless volunteers and generous donations to local charities.

If you like to shop, Terrell is the place for you! From the numerous historic downtown shops, to the many stores that call the Crossroads at Terrell / Terrell Market Center, and The Shops at Terrell their home, you’re sure to find that perfect something to satisfy your craving.

Our schools have earned high ratings from the Texas Education Association and have graduated a congressman, ivy leaguers, major leaguers, an Oscar winner (Jamie Foxx), and Randy Snow, a dominant national and international champion — the only athlete in history to medal in three different sports (tennis, basketball and racing) at three different summer Paralympic Games and one Olympic competition. So profound was Randy’s influence that he was honored in 2004 as the first Paralympic athlete inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.

You may have been drawn here to taste the famous peaches at Ham Orchards, Eddie Deen’s famous BBQ or to tour the beautiful historic homes on Griffith Avenue or to appreciate the history on display at the Heritage Museum or the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum. Perhaps you came to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, enjoying an afternoon of shopping in historic downtown Terrell.

No matter the reason, we’re glad you’re here. Enjoy!

Made DailyHISTORY

Terrell began as a “depot town” along the Texas and Pacific Railroad Company’s new transcontinental line from Longview (in East Texas) to California.

In 1873 a consortium of landowners led by Robert A. Terrell, an early pioneer and surveyor in the area, donated 100 acres to the railroad company in exchange for a depot on the rail line. The town was organized around this original town site and another 100 acres to the north owned by Terrell and his partners.

The railroad town grew rapidly, incorporating in 1874 with Col. J.W. Elder as the first mayor. When the town re-incorporated under new Texas law in 1875, it boasted more than 1,000 residents. Churches were organized almost immediately, and public schools opened ten years later. A state facility for the care of the mentally ill was established here in 1883.

Railroads again became important shapers of local history in the 1890s, when Terrell became the headquarters of one of the nation’s most prosperous short line railroads, the Texas Midland Railroad, with Col. E.H.R. “Ned” Green as president. Green, son of the “witch of Wall Street” Hetty Green (at the time the richest woman in America), was a colorful character, as well-known for his personal exploits as for his business acumen. Ned Green made the first

automobile trip in Texas, a jaunt from Terrell to Dallas, at speeds of 20-25 mph. He also suffered the first auto accident in Texas. During the Dallas trip, Green and auto company representative George Dorris were crowded off the road by a farm wagon and ended up in a ditch.

By 1920, the Terrell State Hospital, with 2,300 patients, was the largest facility of its kind west of the Mississippi. Terrell was the commercial center of the county, and the downtown main street was crowded every Saturday as farm families came to town to trade and visit. Cotton reigned as the cash crop in rural areas surrounding the town. During this period more cotton was shipped from Terrell than from any other single place in the world.

During World War II a British Flight Training School (#1 BFTS) opened at the southern edge of the city as part of a Lend Lease Agreement. More than 2,200 Royal Air Force cadets and U.S. Army Air Corps earned their wings at this school between 1941 and 1945. The airfield and its buildings provided sites for post-war industries, the beginning of the industrial diversification Terrell enjoys today. Throughout Terrell are several historical markers granted by the Texas Historical Commission to identify historic structures or to commemorate individuals, institutions or events of historical interest.

HISTORIC DISTRICT

DOWNTOWN

Downtown Terrell is a vibrant turn-of-the-century Historic District that retains the charm of yesteryear with vintage lighting, wide brick sidewalks and updated historic buildings. Unique storefronts, featuring great architectural details, have been repurposed for retail, restaurants, offi ces, lofts, museums and specialty services.

Visitors to the 1925 Iris Theater can find the next best seller or out-of-print books, browse through a ladies’ upscale consignment boutique and even watch vintage movies, sitting in the original seats. Spectacular hand-painted murals that range from classic movie posters, a vintage biplane, antique 1899 automobile, fire engines, the Texas flag and the circus coming to town decorate building walls, providing a visual snapshot of Terrell’s rich history. As you make your way from one shop to the next, notice the historic buildings and murals mapped out along the way on the Wayfinding Kiosks.

Historic Buildings

Completed in 1904, this library building is located on land owned in the 1890s by local publisher O. B. Colquitt, who later became the governor of Texas. Through the efforts of the women’s clubs of Terrell, the Andrew Carnegie Foundation provided funds for the building, and the city of Terrell contributed money for the library operations. It is now home to the Terrell Heritage Museum.

Another historic building is the St. John Catholic Church at 700 N Frances St. It is the oldest church building remaining in Terrell, built in 1876 and remodeled in 1949. It has many beautiful stainedglass windows.

The Texas & Pacific Railroad Freight Depot at 200 S. Virginia was built in 1873, the year Terrell was founded. The building retains most of its original features, including three bays on its primary facade, a broad hipped roof, and freight doors on the north, south, and east sides. Once an integral part of the region’s economy, this depot was closed in 1977 and is now occupied by an engineering firm. It remains a significant element of the town’s railroad past.

Historic Homes

Unique architectural features, opulent interior design touches and stately, exquisite landscapes are just some of the common characteristics one will find in Terrell’s historic homes located within the city’s oldest established neighborhoods.

From its earliest days in the mid-1870s, Terrell was home to some of the wealthiest and more prominent citizens of the railroad, farming and banking industries in the Northeast Texas region. The legacies of many of these affluent residents and families can be seen in the dozens of beautifully preserved homes in the city.

The oldest home in Terrell still standing is the one-of-a-kind octagonal home of the city’s namesake Robert A. Terrell, built circa 1861-1862.

Currently situated on the campus of Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, the home was built in its unusual shape to allow light and air to circulate more effi ciently through the home. The home featured the first glass windows of any home in Kaufman County and is one of only two octagonal houses left in Texas – making it of great architectural interest.

Another of Terrell’s earliest homes still standing is the L.E. Griffith House, located at 805 First Street, constructed circa 1880. This fine example of early Texas architecture was owned by five generations of the same family and is recognized as both a Texas and national historic landmark.

TERRELL JUBILEE

Terrell’s largest community-wide event, the Terrell Jubilee, is staged every April at Lion’s Club and Ben Gill Parks.

This four-day event features music and entertainment, arts & crafts, business expo, carnival, quilt show, car show, the Fountain 5K Run/Walk and many other activities and attractions.

The Jubilee began in 1981 as the Terrell Chamber of Commerce Livestock Show and Exposition. It was established to stimulate interest in livestock among Terrell’s young people.

The next year, it blossomed into a spring festival and family-friendly event. It’s been conducted every year since, excluding 2020, due to COVID-19 lockdown.

The Terrell Jubilee has evolved into one of the area’s premier community festivals.

The Jubilee offers something for just about everyone. Youngsters enjoy carnival rides under the colorful canopies. Music lovers can see and hear some of the

area’s finest talent. Arts and crafts enthusiasts and shoppers will have plenty to take in. Dog lovers are sure to enjoy the Lions Club Dog Show.

The annual Quilt Show is conducted in conjunction with the Jubilee. The show features a kaleidoscope of color and unique designs demonstrating some of the finest examples of the quilters’ art with entries from throughout North Texas.

A lot of folks come to the Jubilee to participate in local and state-sanctioned BBQ cook-offs. The Terrell Jubilee BBQ cook-off is also sanctioned by IBCA (International Bar-B-Que Cookers Association.) Car enthusiasts come for the annual For the Love of Cars Auto Show. Fitness buffs can compete in the Fountain 5K Run/Walk.

The funfest known as the Terrell Jubilee draws crowds to Terrell like no other event. A four-day crowd estimated at 17,000 attended the Jubilee in 2021.
