Grain-Free Pet Foods; Myths and Concerns n recent years the media has been flooded with commercials tou ting the benefits of feeding ou r pets “ grain-free” diets. Claims inclu de that ou r pets will have more energy, fewer health problems, and eliminate skin allergies. By definition, a grain-free diet will not contain corn or wheat. These two ingredients have been added to pet foods for over a centu ry as a sou rce of carbohydrates for energy. They have also been blamed for being u nhealthy for ou r pets. Corn especially has been condemned by some pet food “ experts” as one of the worst things to feed ou r dogs. They point a finger at corn as a leading cau se of food allergy dermatitis and digestive ailments.
Skin allergies are one of the most common and fru strating conditions we treat at the veterinary hospital. A vet that discovered a cu re for pet allergies wou ld immediately be crowned the greatest animal doctor in the world. V eterinarians wish more pets had food rather than environmental allergies becau se we cou ld change the food and fix the pet. I t is impossible to avoid allergies in the places we and ou r pets live. However, only 12% of pets that have allergies have symptoms cau sed by their food. The other 88%
have allergies related to the environment. These inclu de pollens,
molds, flea bites, and du st. P retty tou gh to hide from these, especially on the Gu lf Coast. 1 0 Wav e s M a g a z i n e | M ay

were being fed some grain-free foods. The su spected link between the foods and the heart disease were those containing peas, lentils, or potatoes as the carbohydrate sou rce. I t was believed that they somehow were interfering with other nu trients needed for a healthy heart mu scle. A more recent stu dy showed that dogs experiencing diet-related heart problems improved after retu rning to a traditional diet that did not contain peas and To make the corn condemnation even weaker most dietary allergies in dogs are cau sed by chicken or beef. Cats are more likely to be allergic to fish. So, corn is not evil, bu t we do not want it to be the first ingredient in ou r pet’ s food. Most q u ality pet foods have a protein listed as nu mber one.
lentils. J u st like with people, fad diets come and go in the pet food indu stry. Companies promote their foods with hard-to-prove claims and pretty commercials. My advice wou ld be to avoid foods that have large proportions of peas, lentils, and potatoes. I f food allergies are su spected in you r pet, a veterinaryrecommended food trial can be performed u sing an approved hypoallergenic diet. This exclu sive diet shou ld be fed for eight weeks. I f the skin problem improves significantly then you r dog or cat may indeed have a tru e food allergy. I t is exciting when a disease can be fixed with a new food rather than long-term medication. R ealistically, most allergies are cau sed by su bstances ou tside the food bowl.
I n 2019, the government issu ed warnings abou t an increased incidence of heart problems being reported in some dog breeds that are not normally affected by a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. A list of specific foods was available that were all linked to this seriou s heart disease. The condition was showing u p in you ng dogs that

e enj oy the beach. A dmiration for the sand, sea, sou nds, wind, and su n is why we call ou rselves locals. Tou rism is an enormou s chu nk of Galveston’ s economic nou rishment that we welcome with open arms. Bu t with tou rists (and some locals), comes a few beach etiq u ette rookies. O ne of the biggest beach day no-no’ s is setting u p shop too close to another grou ps “ area” . O n a bu sy weekend, sometimes you have no choice, and that’ s ok. I t is not ok, however, to feed the rest of you r sandwich to the Seagu lls near another grou p of beach-goers space.

T
Let’ s not feed the seagu lls in close proximity of other folks on the beach. A big pile of warm, wet bird poop on you r blanket, ice chest, or (gasp) on Y O U will end you r peacefu l day with nau seating nastiness.
W e are relaxing on a blanket, having a few brews, listening to the waves, and conversating with friends or family. Then su ddenly, ou r tranq u ility becomes A lfred Hitchcock’ s The Bird’ s movie becau se the grou p next to u s decides it wou ld be cool to lu re a Seagu ll in with food. This is not cool. Seagu lls fly overhead. Seagu lls poop below. Feed one and 20 more will inu ndate the area within minu tes. See the problem? Seagu lls are extremely intelligent, clever animals. More times than not, the gu lls are not even eating the bread or chips you throw ou t for them. They are u sing the food to drop in the water as bait to attract a more carnivorou s meal, fish, so they can swoop down and grab them. Mu ch like tattering their feet on the sand to simu late rain so the worms will su rface. Smart birds!

Grasshopper Control
I
once read in a gardening book that grasshoppers are u su ally present bu t don’ t do mu ch in the way of damage. I thou ght, “ Y ou have got to be kidding! There is a place on earth where grasshoppers don’ t do damage? ! ”
I f there is a place- it is certainly not in Texas. Here, grasshoppers give a very living example of the plagu e that Moses sent on the E gyptians. The grasshopper will eat any vegetation in site and leave nothing bu t skeletal stalks behind. A nd once the grasshopper has matu red, poisons will not kill them. So, what to do? I have fou nd N O LO Bait to be very effective. N O LO Bait is bran flakes coated in N osema locu staea microbial agent that infects only grasshoppers and either kills them or makes them too sick to eat. This is awesome!
A s you can see, if you start u sing this bait and you r neighbors start u sing this bait and you pu t it ou t 2-3 times per season, you can really do some damage to the popu lations of grasshoppers in you r area- for the long term. Spraying poisons j u st kills what grasshoppers are there (if it kills them at all) bu t does nothing to stop the cycle of the grasshopper. The u se of broad-spectru m poisons is a bad process and not an effective management tool.
Then, the healthy grasshoppers move in and eat the sick ones (grasshoppers are cannibalistic) and then they get sick fu rther spreading the disease. A ll the while, no other good bu g or bee or hu mmingbird is bothered by this illness. The grasshoppers love the bran- it’ s like crack cocaine for them. O nce you spread the bait ou t on you r plants you will see them feeding heavily. Y ou will also see a lot of damage in that area to the plants at first. W hen you garden organically you have to get u sed to the idea that it is a process, one that takes time to tu rn the tide. I t is best to spread N O LO Bait at the first sign of grasshoppers- when they are abou t 1/ 2 inch to an inch long. A t this stage the grasshoppers will be killed by the infection. However, if you feed it when they are larger you will still infect the popu lation with the disease that will continu e to spread for several years.

appy May, W avers! Y ou r Bu m loves this time of year becau se it marks the time of year when a lot of ou tdoor mu sical concerts start taking place. O f cou rse, the most amaz ing maj or ou tdoor concert of all time took place in A u gu st of 1969. Y ou may have heard of it, a little show named W oodstock.
I f you want to win a bar bet with you r bu ddies, ask them where the W oodstock concert took place. They will always answer W oodstock, N ew Y ork. W ell, they wou ld be wrong! W oodstock didn’ t take place in W oodstock. W oodstock took place in Bethel, N ew Y ork, abou t 70 miles distance west from W oodstock. Y ou can look u p the reasons why it happened that way. Y ou r Bu m is too laz y to do it for you .
imi endrix $18,000
Hendrix was the top paid performer at W oodstock. His set inclu ded P u rple Haz e, Foxy Lady, Fire, and ended with an encore of Hey J oe. Sadly, Hendrix died a little over a year after W oodstock. He was only 27 years old.

I had a random thou ght the other day while I was riding arou nd in my ol’ scarab. I t’ s not like me to have many thou ghts in a day, bu t here is what had me thinking... Some of today’ s most popu lar mu sic acts can make millions of dollars per show. I wondered what the performers at W oodstock made. I t’ s way too long of a list to name them all, bu t I will inclu de some of my favorites. J imi Hendrix was the top-paid performer at $ 18,000. A rock band from the N ortheast named Q u ill was the lowest paid at only $ 375.
Here are some of the big-name performers and what they were paid...
reedence lear ater evival - 10,000
Blood, Sweat & Tears was the second highest paid band that performed at W oodstock. That really su rprises you r Bu m.
CCR is a band that you r Bu m still loves to listen to. They began their W oodstock set with Born O n The Bayou .
A mong the songs they played were Spinning W heel and Bu m favorite, nd hen I ie. They finished their set with Y ou ’ ve Made Me So V ery Happy.
O ther songs performed inclu ded Bad Moon R ising and P rou d Mary. Their encore song was Su sie Q .

anis oplin - 7,500
The immensely talented J oplin began her W oodstock set with R aise Y ou r Hand. O ther songs in her set inclu ded To Love Somebody and K oz mic Blu es. J oplin performed not one, bu t two encores, becau se the crowd absolu tely loved her. Her two encore songs were P iece O f My Heart and Ball ‘ n’ Chain. Sadly, J oplin passed away a little over a year after W oodstock at the age of 27. O ther artists that died at age 27 were J imi Hendrix, J im Morrison, K u rt Cobain, and A my W inehou se. Hence the name “ 27 Clu b.”

P owerhou se singer Grace Slick and J efferson A irplane rocked W oodstock. They opened their set with The O ther Side O f Life. I nclu ded in their set was Somebody To Love and the protest anthem, V olu nteers. The band performed three encore songs: Come Back Baby, W hite R abbit, and The Hou se A t P ooneil Corners.

The amil Stone $7,000
The electric band began their set with M’ Lady.
A nother song in the set was the very popu lar D ance To The Mu sic. A lso performed was I W ant to Take Y ou Higher, which you r Bu m figures thousands in attendance took literally. Their encore song was Stand!
rosb , Stills, ash oung - 5,000
CSN Y played both acou stic and electric material. They began their 16-set song list with Su ite: J u dy Blu e E yes. O ther songs inclu ded Marrakesh E xpress and Long Time Gone. They conclu ded their set with the acou stic Find The Cost O f Freedom and 49 Bye-Byes. Their protest song O hio had not been written yet, as the K ent State killings did not take place u ntil May 4, 1970.
Grate ul ead - 2,500
I f ever there was a perfect band to play W oodstock it was J erry Garcia and The Gratefu l D ead. A maz ingly, they were only paid a whopping $ 2,500. They were only able to perform a five song set as their stage amps overloaded and cu t their performance short. The songs they did get to play were St. Stephen, Merle Haggard’ s Mama Tried (pretty cool, hu h? ), D ark Star, High Time, and Tu rn O n Y ou r Love Light.
oe oc er - 1, 75
A n E nglish grou p called The Grease Band kicked off the third day of mu sic at W oodstock. A fter playing two songs, their leader, 25-year-old J oe Cocker, stepped onto the stage to begin what was one of the most memorable performances of the festival. Cocker began with Bob D ylan’ s D ear Landlord. Songs inclu ded Feelin’ A lright? and I Shall Be R eleased. The last song was his fantastic rendition of the Beatles W ith A Little Help From My Friends. Legendary statu s!
Santana - 750
N o, you r eyes are not deceiving you . Carlos Santana was only paid $ 750 to perform at W oodstock. He was 22 years old at the time. The first song in his eight-song set was W aiting. Santana followed that with the great E vil W ays. He completed his set with Fried N eck Bone and Some Home Fries.

They are an excellent step u p from tu bing becau se they gu ide you r motion, ensu ring you keep the correct form and stay safe. ree eights: Free weights can be tricky becau se you need proper form and balance to avoid inj u ry. They can be great for working you r stabiliz ing mu scles and you r core, even if you are working another body part, becau se you need these mu scles to keep you r balance. Grou p fitness classes specializ ing in free weights are a great way to do this type of training. Y ou have the expertise and watchfu l eye of you r professional grou p fitness instru ctor to gu ide you , keep you safe, and pu sh you to achieve more gains than you wou ld on you r own. Strength training also helps bone health. Bone density is at its height at abou t age thirty. By stressing the mu scles with resistance, strength training increases bone density, redu cing the risk of osteoporosis and fractu res. W ithou t regu lar strength training, you are probably losing mu scle mass right now. A person loses half a pou nd of mu scle every year after age 20 if not actively training— this rate of loss dou bles after the age of 60. I f you are not actively working on mu scu lar development, you are losing the benefits of you r metabolism and increasing the risk of inj u ry du e to strain and over-exertion.
increase lean mu scle mass at the same rate as men. D u e to the physiology of the female body, compared to men, women produ ce mu ch less testosterone. I t can take lifting heavy weights five or six days a week, plu s a lot of eating, for women to increase their lean mu scle levels. Simply adding an extra day of strength training or grabbing the heavier du mbbells will not au tomatically cau se a woman to become a mu scle-bou nd she-hu lk. A s we say in my g rou p fitness stu dio, “ 6 4 0 mu sc les, 6 0 minu tes, 1 fit you ! ” S o, g rab those du mb b ells and g et lifting !
Strength training and mu scu lar development are critical to tru e health and fitness. Bu ilding mu scle also increases you r metabolism, which breaks down food faster and enables u s to lose weight. A lso, mu scle takes u p far less space than the same amou nt of fat. Thu s, althou gh you might gain weight lifting, you ’ re going to look leaner since mu scle is denser than the fat it’ s replacing. A nd girls, if you are worried that you will become mu scle-bou nd by engaging in strength training, don’ t. The reality is that women can lift a tremendou s amou nt of weight bu t do not

THEATRE REVIEW - COM’S PRODUCTION OF GODSPELL - AN UNEXPECTED PLEASURE By: Paul Hager
odspell, a mu sical composed by Stephen Schwartz with book by J ohn-Michael Tebelak, opened off-Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has since been produ ced by mu ltiple tou ring companies and in many revivals. The 2011 revival played on Broadway from O ctober 13, 2011, throu gh J u ne 24, 2012. Godspell began as a proj ect by drama stu dents at Carnegie Mellon U niversity and then moved to the off-off-Broadway theater La MaMa E xperimental Theatre Clu b in the E ast V illage of Manhattan. The show was then rescored for an off-Broadway produ ction, which became a long-ru nning su ccess. A n abbreviated one-act version of the mu sical designed for performers aged 18 and u nder also exists, titled Godspell J u nior. The mu sical is stru ctu red as a series of parables, primarily based on the Gospel of Matthew. The parables are interspersed with mu sic set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ appearing briefly near the end of the show. Theater s ead o Theatre/ rtistic irector . uss ro n sa s o their production hich recentl closed: “ Godspell comes to u s from the early 1970s, a time when you ng people were inflamed by war, j aded by the media and popu lar cu ltu re, su spiciou s of receiver wisdom, and they were yearning for au thentic heroes who cou ld offer them some peace, some love, and some sense of identity. R ou ghly two generations later, in these u ncertain times,

you ng and old alike may be finding themselves in mu ch the same predicament.
Seeking that same solace, theatre gradu ate stu dent J ohn-Michael Tebelak was inspired to write Godspell after he attended a disconnected, somber E aster service: “ an old priest came ou t and mu mbled into a microphone, and people mu mbled things back, and then everyone got u p and left. I nstead of ‘ healing’ the bu rden, or resu rrecting the Christ, it seems those people had pu shed Him back into the tomb. They had refu sed to let Him come ou t that day.” He immediately went home and began to work on Godspell. “ I wanted to make it the simple, j oyfu l message that I felt the first time I read [ the Gospels] and recreate the sense of commu nity, which I did not share when I went to that service.” W ithin a year, Godspell was performed off-Broadway. Since its premiere in 1971, Godspell has been revived, reimagined, and restaged cou ntless times. O u r produ ction takes place in a dilapidated su bway station throu gh which stream beleagu ered individu als from all walks of life, each www.wavesgalveston.com
one clinging to the competing ideas of some influ ential philosopher or scholar - reflecting the fu tility of any hu man’ s attempt to explain God and the u niverse - u ntil, su ddenly, J ohn the Baptist enters with the promise of a new way. Godspell has been hailed as a beau tifu l interpretation of the Gospel A ccording to St. Matthew and damned as an ou trageou s blasphemy. W hether you consider you rself a person of faith or are more circu mspect or secu lar in you r views, we invite you to open you r heart to rediscovering the j oy, the simplicity, and the powerfu l message of redemption fou nd in this retelling of the good news as it bu rsts forth in color, sou nd, and movement onstage here.” Let me begin my review of this show [ and this produ ction] with a caveat - The mu sical itself is not one of my favorites. W hen I first became aware of it at the tender age of 17, I thou ght of it as a silly antithesis to the highly controversial albu m mu sical J esu s Christ Su perstar released 1 year prior. I was fu rther dou btfu l as to its worth u pon viewing the 1973 film version which I fou nd to be a ‘ Haz y D az e’ cross between a tou ring Commedia dell’ arte trou pe and a circu s sideshow with very little religiou s merit. So, it was with mild trepidation that I packed u p my fellow mu sical-fanatic friend [ who u su ally j u dges a mu sical’ s merit not by the show itself bu t by the sou ndtrack and/ or cast albu m] that kinda gru mbled he didn’ t really care for the songs in Godspell, bu t wanted to get ou t of the hou se and attended the closing performance - a Su nday matinee.
W e both anticipated a q u asi-u pdated version of a ‘ classic’ mu sical that probably shou ld have been retired long ago.
CURTIAN GOING UP
How misgu ided were we with ou r preconceived notions! From the moment we took ou r seats in the ‘ dilapidated su bway station’ created by Scenic and Lighting D esigner, Cu rt Meyer, to the emotionally charged cu rtain call, we were transfixed by a visu al and au ditory delight of a performance. E ach and every one of the 12- member cast [ all CO M Theatre Maj ors] not only did well in the spotlight with their solo moments bu t blended together like a well-oiled machine as an ensemble. W hat impressed [ and entertained] me the most was not so mu ch the ‘ action’ of the parables being narrated, bu t rather the ‘ reactions’ of the ensemble serving as an au dience listening to them. W hether they were the resu lt of H R u ss Brown’ s su perlative direction or improvisational ad-libs that came u p du ring rehearsal, they were spot-on, ranging from hilariou s to poignant. A manda Bez emek’ s eye-poppingly fu nky makeu p and costu mes plu s D ance Captain Hayden W est’ s produ ction nu mber choreography gilded the lily appropriately.

A cou ple of minor nitpicks: A t times, mostly du ring solo nu mbers, some of the vocals were overpowered by the live accompaniment. O ne mu st remember, however, that these are singers in training, not trained singers, and most assu redly give them ‘ A for effort’ . A lso, the stage effect of the fog [ from the J ohn Carpenter movie? ] or mist [ from the moors in Hou nd of the Baskervilles? ] that enveloped the playing area, while providing an eerie atmosphere in the beginning, never disappeared, or dissipated cau sing several overheard negative comments from patrons du ring intermission. W hat lesson has this P arable tau ght me? N ext time I attend a performance, I ’ ll be leaving my preconceived notions at home!

ark and su llen themes like death, inner demons and u nmarked graves don’ t immediately j u mp ou t as lyrical ingredients for good-time mu sic. O ccasionally, however, songwriters come along who have a knack for telling the u ngodly tru th in a palatable way that provides levity against the weight of life’ s less desirable elements. Grifters and Shills are those kinds of songwriters. The mu sically innovative hu sband and wife du o comprised of R ebecca and J ohn Stoll (R ebecca on vocals and bass, J ohn on vocals, gu itar, percu ssion, banj o, cigar-box gu itar, harmonica - among other instru ments) write, record and perform songs that are both thou ght provoking and yet, in an old-world, front-porch, spiritu al revival kind of way, are high-energy and danceable. “ I think a lot of the older themes c ome from a very timeless p lac e and find a new ap p lic ation in ou r new c irc u mstanc es. The Clear Lake area du o originating from Hou ston (R ebecca) and Harlingen, Texas (J ohn) married in 2014 and have released 7 albu ms, 5 videos, held over 20 online shows du ring the height of the pandemic and are still at it with fu ll-force enthu siasm and drive. Their latest recording, P retty Little Secrets, was released in 2020 on both CD and vinyl. 15 tracks of fire and fu ry kick off with “ R u nning O u t” a song inspired by the 2018 P arkland school shootings.
artist, J ohn Streeter, make P retty Little Secrets a complete aesthetic j u mp into another time while still hitting on contemporary issu es and sou nds. A lthou gh J ohn and R ebecca grew u p in different places, both admit to having long-term relationships with Galveston and its mu sic - the O ld Q u arter A cou stic Café in particu lar. The legendary live mu sic venu e on 20th Street in downtown Galveston has seen many changes since its early days of the late 1960’ s (located in Hou ston u ntil moving in the 1990’ s to Galveston) and has become a Texas mu sical institu tion attracting and showcasing some of the worlds best singer songwriters from fabled Texas trou badou r Townes V an Z ant who helped make the place famou s nearly half a centu ry ago, to more recent songwriting masters like R ay W ylie Hu bbard, Hayes Carll, and Canada’ s Fred E aglesmith.
“ A day or two after the shooting s I was watc hing the news and there was another talk ing head on TV talk ing ab ou t how this will never hap p en ag ain and I was think ing , ‘ this rec ord is on rep eat’ . W e mig ht want to ask ou rselves what these fig u re heads are telling u s. W e mig ht want to have a c onversation, ” J ohn said. I n an era where fu ll-length albu ms, be they on CD or vinyl, have seemingly taken a back seat to single-song releases, Grifters and Shills still believe in delivering lyrical, mu sical and visu al continu ity throu ghou t each of their recordings. you r j oint savings. A gain, you both agree on the dollar amou nt each of you will contribu te every month. A fter those two accou nts are fu nded each month, you both each have a seperate banking accou nt. The third and fou rth accou nts are for each of you individu ally to do with in whatever manner you choose after the first two accounts are fu nded each month. N o q u estions asked. W hatever each of you have left over after covering household expenses and saving is yours. You spend it however you want to spend it and it’s not your spouse’s bu siness to approve or disapprove.
D
ean, my eyes started to glaze over before I finished your answer. Four accounts?? Let’s make it six. E ven better, rou nd it off to 10. Seriou sly? A ngela, listen to me instead. I f you have separate accou nts, then as long as you meet you r obligations to what is decided who pays what, and how mu ch, then it’ s none of you r spou ses bu siness what or how mu ch you bu y or spend or save. I f it is a j oint accou nt, it is a different story. I think that you both shou ld know even withou t talking abou t it what is a reasonable amou nt to spend withou t consu lting each other. I t depends on you r income bracket as to know what is spending money and what is a serious expenditure. I don’t know you r income, so I can’ t tell you an amou nt. I can say this - don’ t j u st say nothing and let this smolder. Sit down and discu ss this now. Your cruise will not be enjoyable, and later on down the line, this might happen again. Commu nicate! !
i A ngela. I am going to take you r side on this with one provision. I happen to have a very smart accou ntant friend that gave me some very wise advice several years ago. He told me a married cou ple shou ld have fou r different bank accou nts. I ’ m being seriou s, so follow me carefu lly.
P .S.- P ersonally, I think he owes you an apology.
The first account is for household expenses. Your house payment, car payments, groceries, utilities, etc. You both agree on the amount that each of you will contribu te to it each month. The second accou nt is for S 6 4 Wav e s M a g a z i n e | M ay 2 0 2 2

About the artist: Helen Saldivar is a native Texan, with a deep appreciation for the island. Helen and her husband moved here three years ago, and her creati ity flourished. hey have spent the last two years reno ating their fi er upper. Helen is a self-taught artist, delving into many mediums with her favorite being acrylics and making murals out of Mardi Gras beads. Alia Benavides: How would you describe the art you create? Helen Saldivar: Living in Galveston lends itself to painting with a nautical theme, and I like to add a touch of whimsy, humor, and originality...kind of like the island. AB: How has moving to the island inspired/ influenced your art?
ART AN INTERVIEW WITH GALVESTON PAINTER & MURALIST
HELEN SALDIVAR By: Alia Benavides
HS: The sights, sounds and history of Galveston is breathtaking. I’m overwhelmed every time I see a flock of pelicans flying o er the Gulf, hearing the waves crashing and the foghorns of ships late at night. I am always impressed by the beautiful, grand Victorian homes that survived the 1900 storm. What I’ve learned from living here these past three years is, anything goes. I thank the past and current leaders of this great community for inspiring artists and creativity. AB: What message do you want to get across with your work? HS: When folks look at my paintings, I hope they see a representation of Galveston. We live in one of the greatest cities in the country. Take pride in the city, and never take it for granted. And please...don’t litter our beaches.
AB: What is your favorite Galveston themed painting that you have created? HS: ery time I finish a new painting, it becomes my favorite. But I ha e to say, the foot sunflower mural I painted on our backyard cedar fence is my Michelangelo-wanna-be painting. I just wish more people could see it. So, if anyone needs a sunflower backdrop…I have it. Pelicans are so incredibly fun to paint. My newest and favorite, which I sold, was of a pelican sitting on a post with directional signs pointing to all my favorite island restaurants. It was hard selling that one. I enjoy painting the Pleasure Pier skyline in the background also. I’ve never stepped foot on the PP, but know it well having studied
and painted it se eral times. AB: What do like to do for fun when you are not working on your art? HS: My two grand girls are the lights of my life, and we try to spend as much time with them as possible. I ha e a ton of hobbies, so I’m ne er bored. My grandmother taught me how to crochet years ago and there is nothing I can’t crochet. I also enjoy seashell art, repurposing old stuff, sewing, gardening, baking, tra eling, and eating out in all our fabulous island restaurants. My husband just recently retired, so we’re both looking forward to getting more in ol ed in the community.
our bottom floor into a beach rental. I’m in the process of painting nautical murals on all the doors. We’ e had a handful of guests, and I’m flattered by the comments on my artwork. Contact Helen at wsaldo@yahoo.com
AB: Are you currently working on any exciting new projects? HS: I ha e so many ideas on new paintings and projects. Finding the time to paint is the key. We just recently finished remodeling and are turning

Saying Goodbye To my Island friends who have lost a loved one:
T
his reflection is filled with sadness and hope. A s I think of all those in my life who have left this earth, most recently my father-in-law, coming to terms with saying goodbye to a loved one is difficu lt. Saying goodbye affects each individu al differently. W e all handle these situ ations in ou r own way, for some, it is too difficu lt and it hau nts them for the rest of their lives; while other compartmentaliz e and move on with living. W e’ ve all heard that “ dying is a part of living” . W hile tru e, it is still difficu lt to say goodbye to a grandparent, parent, spou se or child we love deeply. So how do we accept this fact and say goodbye and manage the rest of ou r days u ntil it is ou r tu rn to leave this earth?
again when my j ou rney here is complete” . I t’ s ok to be sad, it’ s ok to cry, it’ s ok to feel the pain of emptiness, these are all hu man traits and emotions bu t Christ tells u s to “ rej oice in salvation” . So hu man as we are, it’ s ok to feel as we do, bu t what gets u s past this pain and sadness is “ faith” . Saying goodbye doesn’ t mean we forget ou r loved ones, it means we tu rn the page and see what the next chapter in life has for u s. W hen a loved one dies, it doesn’ t mean we have to die with them. I t means we take that love and give/ share it with the next person in line; it may be a relative we haven’ t seen in a while, a friend or even a stranger. God is always pu tting someone on ou r path.
There is no easy answer, no right or wrong, bu t let’ s try to pu t it into perspective. A s living beings ou r lives have a beginning and an end. I f you have no faith, then you believe when this life is over...it’ s over, bu t those who have faith in Christ believe there is eternal life if they accept J esu s as their Savior. He has saved u s from ou rselves, He has redeemed u s of ou r sins and He has given u s salvation. So, we have a choice to accept ou r fate as hu man beings that life begins and life ends and we become du st; or we have faith and there is life after ou r earthly death if we believe in the redemptive power of God. I think I ’ ll take a chance on faith. My faith tells me that saying goodbye to a loved one, while difficu lt, shou ld give u s hope that we will one day see them again. So maybe instead of goodbye, we say “ see you
