Our town’s history began in 1850, and the Quitman Chamber of Commerce was established in 1974 to advocate for and support the prosperity of the Greater Quitman area businesses. We are proud to be the home of the first Texas-born governor of the great Lone Star State, Gov. Jim Hogg. Our city park, rightfully named Governor Jim Hogg City Park, houses the home he raised his family in and hosts many local festivals and fairs, including the oldest ongoing festival in Texas, the Old Settlers Reunion.
I would like to personally thank our current chamber members for all of their support and for trusting me to be the chamber’s executive director. Wood County Arboretum
“We established a sanctuary for the monarchs, and feel fortunate that the arboretum can play a role in helping protect this endangered species,” said Lin Grado, garden manager. “We’ve been able to expand to a large garden area filled with only Texas native plants, a unique feature in Wood County.”
Part of the excitement centers on the installation of a black metal perimeter fence for after-hours security. A new covered pavilion, made possible through a grant, provides a comfortable place for education sessions and entertaining.

“We’re really excited about all the changes,” said Deanna Caldwell, president of the non-profit Friends of the Arboretum, which oversee the grounds. “It’s been a busy few years for our volunteers, but we think the efforts will benefit the arboretum for years.”
In the butterfly observation area, an outdoor swing provides comfortable seating for lingering.
Gardens are free and open all year. The Stinson House is available for tours every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Quitman Public Library is located at 202 East Goode Street in downtown Quitman, Texas. The library serves all residents living within the City of Quitman, Wood County and the surrounding area.
The 23-acre arboretum, 175 Governor Hogg Pkwy, is long considered a crown jewel for East Texas, offering a host of outdoor attractions such as a walking trail, gazebo, shade garden and monarch butterfly way station.

Each year, hundreds of library patrons utilize print and electronic reference resources, access the Internet through the library’s high-speed wireless connection, enjoy state-of-the-art Wi-Fi service, participate in computer and Internet training, view a library exhibit or attend one of the library’s many events.
Fresh features at the Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are providing new opportunities for guests to enjoy nature and the year-round beauty of changing seasons.
The house was originally built in the Speer Community by James A. Stinson, whose daughter Sallie married Jim Hogg, the first native born Texas governor.
The venue is tended by volunteers, and it takes plenty of helpers to manage the upkeep. People who love the outdoors and history are encouraged to join efforts to keep the grounds in tip-top shape.
Quitman Public Library
The library holds over 30,000 print materials including books, magazines, local and regional newspapers, online databases, movies and audio books. In addition, the library offers e-books and media available on OverDrive.

Quitman has several medical services available to the community. There are many different fields of medical care including UT Health Quitman, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Francis Clinic, First Physician Clinics, chiropractic care, counseling, dental care, gyms for physical therapy, acupuncture and hospital needs.
Medical Center Quitman. In March 2018 East Texas Medical Center joined the UT Health family. As a certified critical access hospital it features 25 private inpatient rooms, 24/7 emergency centers, a network of hospitals and clinics, specialized centers of healthcare excellence, regional rehabilitation/fitness network, regional trauma/emergency system, regional home health coverage and extensive healthcare delivery programs. The UT Health system has one mission: bringing East Texas the world-class care it deserves.
We began a huge downtown revitalization campaign in 2016 and have seen many major additions to our downtown. In 2019, the Quitman Development Corporation was awarded the “Best Economic Development Game Changer Award” for a small business retail incubator project in downtown.
