A TRADITIONAL SEASIDE VILLAGE THAT’S TRANSFORMING THE TEXAS COAST High architectural standards and a strong design code signal a new level of quality on the Texas Coast. The expansion, Cinnamon Shore South, gives buyers the opportunity to join the prettiest, beachside village in the Lone Star State.

Mark Schnell Urban Designer

When I first ventured to Mustang Island, located on the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas, I found a place that’s straight out of a Robert Earl Keen song. The iconic Texas musician sings that “the road goes on forever, and the party never ends.” But Mustang Island offered a twist on his lyrics: the road literally ends at the ship channel (and a ferry) in the old town area of Port Aransas. Even though the road does not go on forever, the party in Port Aransas never ends: lively beach bars, a robust restaurant scene, some of the best fishing around, and a funky beach town

REAL ESTATE &

vibe that comes in part from a location at the very end of the road. But I didn’t find the kind of walkable mixed-use communities that so many people – including many Texans – have come to love along Florida’s Highway 30A, a place that I call home. I met Jeff Lamkin in 2006 after he had purchased 60 acres on Mustang Island. He loved Port Aransas, but also saw potential in the wide open spaces just outside of old town to create a new community for beach-loving Texans. I designed the master plan and wrote the design code to generate a

walkable mixed-use community unlike anything constructed on the Texas coast. With a strong emphasis on design, we set out to create a new place to complement the old. In the 15 years that followed, the original 60-acre tract has been largely builtout. Hundreds of additional acres were purchased, and new phases are now under construction, with even more in the planning stages. Cinnamon Shore has grown to become the community that transformed the Texas coast.

Alia Benavides: When did you realize you wanted to become an artist?

ART AN INTERVIEW WITH AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST RANDALL COGBURN By: Alia Benavides

Randall Cogburn: It was a slow process for me at first. As a kid I liked drawing and watching art programs on TV, but I also liked doing what every kid loved to do, play outside, ride my bike, play video games, go on trips etc. At that young age, I didn’t even think of becoming an artist to make a living. In High school I increased my skills a little bit more but still a career as an artist never crossed my mind. It wasn’t until I was out of college and pursuing other career opportunities that didn’t pan out, the art bug crept in. I have a creative side to me, and I guess painting was a way to satisfy that creative bug. That and I enjoy painting and taking part in the history of oil painting. It has opened my eyes to a new world of seeing everyday life that only few have experienced as careers during the history of painting. AB: What inspires your art? RC: Looking for scenes that I think are interesting to paint. They are mostly found from everyday life, like landscapes, seascapes, still life objects, to something mundane that I feel like I can paint in an interesting way. They are mostly spur of the moment paintings that sometimes take on a process before I come to a final painting. It also comes from a push pull with what sells and what I’d like to paint for myself. Lighting, design, atmosphere are three things I look for that compels me to paint. But mostly it’s bringing people happiness when they find

a painting they love to have on their walls. A painting they can treasure and pass down in their family. AB: Which is your favorite painting that you have completed of Galveston & why? RC: There’s quite a few. To pick one is a very hard thing to do since I’ve painted over 1000 paintings. Defining moments when something clicked. Those encouraged me to reach a newer step in my painting abilities. Painting big I think would be one. Painting big in one go would be another. Painting big and turning that painting into a Best of Show would be an even bigger achievement. I did one painting like that, that achieved all three called Freedom, a 36x48 painting of the Galveston Ferry Landing with surf and some seagulls flying in a sunset. It was a big challenge. I had one day to get a painting turned in and I didn’t know what to paint until I remembered one scene and a canvas I had lying in wait. The scene fit the canvas and I was off to work. It took me 6hrs straight of painting start to finish. An achievement I had never done before in this big of scale. It’s hard to make every brush stroke count and make everything harmonize as your painting. A slight move in the wrong direction or color shift is off and you need to either wipe it back or reinstate it. This painting flowed nicely from start to finish. AB: You have a permanent collection of over 20 paintings depicting Galveston in Jennie Sealy hospital, how did that honor come to be?

RC: I was in the right place at the right time. I had massed a body of work of paintings I’ve done of Galveston over a couple years and submitted them to Jennie Sealy and they accepted them. At that time, I was taking care of my dad who was dying, and I was filled with joy that they selected my paintings in hope that I could spread joy to others who might need some break from dealing with stress from being sick or having a relative sick. When my dad went to the ER on that one dreadful day, the days after I would wonder the halls or lobby looking at the art on the walls it kept my mind off for a bit. AB: What do you enjoy doing when you are not painting? RC: Spending time with my Wife and enjoying every day as it comes. Doing what most everyone does when they can. But when I’m not painting, I’m mostly thinking about what to paint or what needs to be done. As a full time artist, it tends to be more than a full-time job working every day. When most work a M-F 8-5 job or similar hours I’m doing a M-Sun 8-9 as painting is something I can do any hour, but it tends to be spread out over the whole week. AB: What projects are you currently working on or looking forward to in the future? RC: Focusing on producing a new body of work for Galleries, and my website. Lately, however I’ve been dealing with some health challenges and was scheduled for surgery in late Dec. It was canceled due to the Dr. having Covid. I’m hoping after the

surgery is done, I can get back to normal but for now I’m working at less than half my norm. There is one project I’ve focused on recently and creating some affordable Giclee Prints that are framed. They are Limited edition of 25, and each are from paintings I’ve painted in the past. They are all 4” x 8” signed and numbered. Take the time and go to my website there’s lots to see. You can find Randall’s work in any of these Texas galleries or online. • Island Framed - 515 25th St. Galveston Island, Texas 77550 • The Good Art Company - 218 W Main St. Fredericksburg, TX 78624 • Marta Stafford Fine Art - 200 Main St. Marble Falls, Texas 78654 • Home Studio - Austin, TX • Hindes Fine Art Gallery - 615 W. The world doesn’t care If there are more kids than coats. If there are more empty stomachs than full plates. If there are more people than beds. If there’s more hurt than healing, More despair than hope, or more bad than good.

But thankfully, you do. Every day, nearly 40 million hardworking Americans battle poverty. Help them win. A sustaining monthly gift of just $25 helps us double our ability to assist those in need throughout your community.
