I can’t express how exciting it is to be back at the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce! For those of you who don’t know, I was previously the chamber manager from 2013- 2015. It was during that time that I developed so many meaningful relationships. So much so, it compelled me to stay in Greenville even when my family was slowly taking turns in reestablishing themselves in the Detroit area, where I am from originally. During those earlier chamber years, I had the privilege of working alongside business community members in setting a new example of what chamber membership should mean. It was through my time at the chamber that I was able to become deeply immersed and invested in my community. It taught me the importance of communication and working together. It also made me realize how important it is to show up and participate. My time away from the chamber was mostly spent working in the world of neurosurgical medical devices. For someone with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, it certainly was a step in a very different professional direction. Now, back at the chamber, I am hoping to use my recent professional experiences to better relate to and support our members. These experiences included complex sales cycles and forecasting, quality and regulatory compliance and documentation, analytics, sales training, web-based customer support development, product training development, inventory distribution, ERP and CRM system development, marketing and communications management, and project management among many other industry specific skills. Although these most recent experiences won’t translate entirely to our membership, it has provided me a perspective in how our chamber can continue to grow to be an organization that provides opportunities for business development and growth. The diversity of your local chamber’s board of directors is also a huge asset to what we can bring as an organization. Our chamber is led by 20 volunteer directors that represent industries such as: finance and banking, education, small businesses and entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations, retail, food, professional services, real estate, and healthcare. The board of directors and me look forward to working together on developing an organization that adds value to its members. BROUGHT TO YOU BY VOLUNTEERS Last July Greenville witnessed a massive turnout at the amphitheater in Riverside Park for a yacht rock concert. For those who don't know how the free concert in Greenville featuring a Los Angeles based rock band was possible, the charge was led by a dedicated group of volunteers. The summer concert series that was organized by Restore Riverside Park and funded by grants was a stark reminder of the power of volunteers. Starting with the rehabilitation and restoration of the venue itself, the amphitheater, an impassioned group of community members decided to take it upon themselves to "do" while most others just complained. And so, a venue was restored and with that momentum several other projects were completed in the park. But this group of volunteers saw there was more that needed to be done, they needed to draw people back, inspiring a community in remembering what we are capable of and who we are. So with the arduous work of grant writing, they secured funds to entertain the community and entertain they did. When a person volunteers they are dedicating the most valuable thing one can give, time. The powerful act of volunteering means a person has decided to give their time to act, create, do... the antithesis of what we often see in our online culture of complain, whine, and gripe. The power of volunteerism can also be found in how it changes the person volunteering. Serving others through volunteering often changes your mindset from unappreciative or even apathy to that of gratefulness. Our chamber of commerce is made up of many amazing volunteers. From organizations that operate solely on a volunteer base, to our board of directors who volunteer their time in moving our business community forward.
