early two hundred years ago, after being given as a land grant to a man named Churchill Fulshear, the City of Fulshear was established, and emerged as an agricultural community until 1888 when Churchill Fulshear, Jr. granted a right-of-way through the land to the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway. By 1890, the town had a post office and by 1893 the Fulshear school district was established (eventually merging into Lamar Consolidated Independent School District). By 1898, the town supported 250 people, three saloons, 11 stores, a hotel and a school. As of this year, the City of Fulshear is known as the fastestgrowing city in Texas; the recorded population four years ago was 17,775, indicating a 302% growth. The city’s economic development department stated that this

growth indicates Fulshear being viewed as a top destination for residents and businesses thanks to strategic efforts to create a balance of the small-town bond with nature and high-quality, well-planned, diversified progress. The city estimates Fulshear’s population will surpass 30,000 residents over the next decade, but today, the projected population of the Fulshear and the extraterritorial jurisdiction lands at more than 25,000 people and a collection of businesses. Notably, the city’s growth, progress, historical milestones and achievements will be celebrated this year during The City of Fulshear’s Bicentennial Celebration. In recognition of Fulshear’s 200th birthday, the public is invited to celebrate at Fulshear High School on March 23, 2024. Visit the city’s official website for updates about the celebration. FULSHEAR FIRST The “Fulshear First” sentiment is strongly supported in the city and is most evident when looking at the people, places and efforts that help the city thrive. Keeping the City Beautiful As a Keep Texas Beautiful campaign member, the City of Fulshear’s Keep Fulshear Beautiful organization semi-annually selects a project to adorn the city. Typically, during the spring and fall seasons each year, and

during those times, community volunteers, alongside city employees and council members, gather to plant native plants in the city’s community vegetable gardens. Keep Fulshear Beautiful also hosts bi-annual clean-up events — one in November and one in April — making this organization a popular choice for students needing service hours or scout troops planning projects. (If you are interested in Keep Fulshear Beautiful, contact Ramona Ridge at 713-703-4129.) Community Hubs The city also offers plenty of options for community gatherings, such as The Irene Stern Fulshear Community Center at 6920 Fulshear Katy Road in Fulshear. The center is available for public rental reservations as long as regular city programming isn’t scheduled. Or, if the gathering of minds, knowledge or creativity is what is wanted, the newest branch in the Fort Bend County Libraries system — the Fulshear Branch Library — would be a destination to try. Located at 6350 GM Library Road in Fulshear, the branch opened on Jan. 13 with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The two-story Fulshear Branch Library replaces the Bob Lu-

Out at the Parks Fulshear is home to a handful of parks, with plans for more parks or improvements to existing ones in the future. The op-
erational parks include Primrose Park, a recreational facility just west of Huggins Elementary on Dixon Road; Frances Smart Park, which houses the Historic Section House, better known as the Switch House; and Fulshear Heritage Rail Trail, which highlights Fulshear’s history with the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway. And with a short drive to Katy, the Mary Jo Peckham Park makes for a great visit. It features playgrounds, picnic tables, a lake where visitors can feed ducks or fish, and a small area where dogs can run unleashed. The park also features a public indoor pool and mini-golf course. Additional Katy-area parks include the City of Katy Play Station (AKA Train Park), Callegari Park, Exploration Park, Falcon Point Playground, Fry Road Park, Fort Bend MUD Recreational Park, Malcolm E. Beckendorff Family Park and the Pine Mill Ranch Play Area and Splash Pad. Locally Sourced. Locally Loved. As for most communities nowadays, Fulshear features a spot that opens weekly and offers locally sourced foods for sale — the Fulshear Farmers’ Market. What began with 12 vendors is now a booming market that features an array of produce and food products grown or produced within a 200-mile radius of Fulshear. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 9035 Bois D’Arc Ln @ FM 1093 in Fulshear. Visit fulshearfarmersmarket.com for more information. Beyond Fulshear, about 11 miles, is Blessington Farms (510 Chisolm Trail, Wallis, TX), which offers berry picking, a seasonal pumpkin patch, fishing, an area that includes mazes, slides and rides, and safe encounters with livestock like goats, camels, chickens, goats and zebu. This nonprofit is the largest agency that exclusively serves northern Fort Bend County’s residents with medical assistance, food, rent and utility assistance, job searches, furniture and disaster relief. Annabelle’s Amazing Graces (annabellesamazinggraces.org) is another nonprofit out of Fulshear that raises awareness about and financial support for research into the GNAO1 mutation, a rare disorder. The Fulshear-Katy Area Chamber of Commerce With the mission to “serve, protect and promote business,” The Fulshear-Katy Area Chamber of Commerce (www.fulshearkaty.com) is essential to the community. for Humans & Pets
D
emonstrating the nature of the “Fulshear first” sentiment around the city is the Pets of Fulshear/The Petterie Adoption Center (www.facebook.com/groups/thepetterie/) that helps unite Fulshear residents with lost or new pets. This year marks a decade’s worth of this organization’s efforts. “Using the lowest possible overhead, The Petterie Adoption Center is dedicated to achieving a no-kill, zero-homeless pet community in Fulshear through spay and neuter efforts, adoption, education, rescue and rehabilitation,” states the animal rescues social media page. And just like the humans that care for them, pets are often in need of minor or significant medical care, and the city of Fulshear has animal facilities to meet all of their needs.
