PET Corner

Conundrum Captivity’s

There is a wide array of non-domesticated, “exotic” animals kept as pets around the world. From lizards, snakes, and birds to sugar gliders and many others. Different from our domesticated pets, these animals’ relatives are living free in the wild. These non-traditional pets are usually owned by folks who love animals. Their captivity, however, is a conundrum to me.

Besides my two dogs, two cats, four chickens, and a horse have owned a blue tongue skink for now twenty years. He lives in a twofoot by four-foot well-appointed enclosure that is parked for most of the year outdoors in the fresh air. He lives in one of our spare bedrooms in the colder months.

Mr. Blue Tongue

never experienced the freedom to roam forests or been allowed to be on his own. He has never met up with another of his species. My lizard, named “Blue Tongue”, (not very creative, know) has likely outlived ninety percent of his own kind thanks to the safety of captivity. If he had a choice though, would he have chosen this life? Would any exotic reptile, bird, or mammal choose the same?

Born in captivity, he has been fed well, kept comfortable and safe from the predators of the Australian wild where his ancestors have roamed probably for millennia. Although safe and healthy, he has

may or may not be experiencing living life confined to our man-made enclosures. Enclosure or habitat is perhaps softer terms for a cage. Although protected and well-fed, believe they all must experience some degree of boredom confined by four walls and a roof. Most pet owners have busy lives and have limited time to spend with their charges. So, the pet sits alone except for short interactions with their human. If exotic pets had a choice, feel most would choose to take their chances in the great outdoors, leave us behind and never look back. It may be hard to admit, but most have no real attachment to us. The “Call of the Wild” is probably still in there.

in” and provide the best possible diet, husbandry, and habitat for the long haul. Sadly, more than half of exotic pet owners grow tired of the animal and look to re-home, or worse, turn them loose. Most will never survive if released, but some, even worse, can become an invasive species. An example of this would be the Florida Everglades which has become inundated with exotic pythons, iguanas and monitor lizards that were dumped by their disinterested owners only to create havoc in the ecosystem. As a result, many of the native species have suffered irreparable harm from the hostile invaders. Good intentions gone bad by pet owners tired of their responsibility.

If a person truly loves all animals, should we even allow ourselves to keep an individual captive for their entire life? Why is it our right? Are the animals existing just for our own enjoyment and entertainment? What do they get out of their existence besides food and safety?

Should You Work Out While on Vacation?

hhh…summer vacation!! We all deserve a little time away from our hustle and bustle lives. But what about the workout routine you’ve come to love? How will you keep your body active, or do you even need to while vacationing? The short answer is Ye

If you decide to use your vacation to rest from exercise entirely, you may wonder, “How long can go before lose fitness?” The fitter you are, the faster you lose your fitness, which doesn’t seem fair, does it? How fast you lose endurance and muscle depends primarily on your genetics. Still, some general guidelines are that aerobic power can decline 5-10 percent in three weeks, and all your gains could be gone after about two months of inactivity. You tend to lose aerobic capacity faster than muscular strength since muscles are resilient and retain a memory of all those exercises you did.

So, if you are convinced that it’s much better to stay active and get some kind of workout while on vacation, here are some suggestions on how to accomplish it!

Set Reali tic E ectatio

It’s not likely that you’ll be able to keep up your full workout routine while on vacation. So, don’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself. Accomplishing just 40 to 50 percent of what you usually do is better than nothing. But for goodness’ sake, do something!

Re earch Where Yo Will e i iti

Before leaving your hometown, investigate the workout facilities in and around where you will be staying. Some hotels offer fitness classes, gyms, and even walking programs. Also,

check local fitness studios or gyms. Often these businesses will offer discounted daily or weekly rates for visitors; my studio does, and others in our town do as well.

ac O e E e tial Wor o t Ite

You can easily pack a resistance band in your suitcase and not exceed your airline weight allowance. Use the resistance band in your vacation room for upper and lower-body strength-training moves. Don’t just depend on your workout coming from lifting those 12 ounces you will be holding in your hand at one of our local breweries.

Wal Every here

Galveston’s Seawall is a great place to walk! You just can’t beat the smell of the ocean, the sound of the waves coming in, and the sight of our ocean wildlife. Also, try to walk to at least one of your meal locations a day. The walk afterward will be an excellent way to help your digestion. And if you are a runner, try running down on the sand. Running on sand produces a full-body soreness that you don’t get elsewhere. Yay! Be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen. Our sun’s rays are about as intense as they get. Save the lobster look for the true crustaceans.

Fi the A ve t ro Yo

Rent a bike, kayak, or surfboard. There are many places on our seawall where you can do this. Some of our surf rental shops also offer lessons. Try something new on vacation

and burn a few calories while you’re at it.

on everyone while you burn off Aunt Martha’s strawberry pie! Enjoy some quality time with your family while doing something good for your body at the same time.

Lounging poolside is always a welcome activity during vacation. So, while you’re lounging, hop in the pool every half hour for a swim! If you’re not a strong swimmer, try walking through water higher than waist deep. The simple act of moving against the water’s resistance will provide a moderate workout. As a word of caution, save this activity for the pool. Our beach water is not the place to try out your endurance swimming skills. We often have dangerous riptides and heavy surf, so save the water workout for a pool, preferably with a lifeguard on duty.

atch U ith Yo r Fa ily

Many vacations involve visiting relatives, near and far. This year, instead of chatting about the latest news sitting in the backyard or at the kitchen island, go for an evening stroll around their neighborhood together. Chat and get caught up

e a Weather Watcher a o e re are

Check the weather for your vacation destination, and be sure to bring comfortable clothes to wear while you walk, bike, hike, swim, or jog. The last thing you need is one more reason to ditch your workout plans because you don’t have the appropriate clothing.

With a bit of pre-planning and a smidge of dedication, you can maintain your fitness level while you are on vacation. So, get out there and enjoy your time away; you’ve earned it!

Unique Uses for Botox® (Xeomin® )

Botox® or Xeomin® are commonly injected into 3 main sites; the forehead to treat expressive lines, the outer sides of the eyes to treat “Crow’s Feet”, and between the eyebrows to eliminate frown lines sometimes referred to as “11s”. But did you know that botulinum can also be used to raise the eyebrows, eliminate horizontal “bunny” lines on the nose, turn up the corners of the mouth, reduce lines above the lip, get rid of chin dimpling and smooth out neck bands? Read the details below.

Eyebrow Lift

When an elevated brow is desired, botulinum injected into the upper lateral aspect of the circular eye muscle named the orbicularis oculi can achieve this. By slightly weakening this part of the muscle, the opposing muscle of the forehead literally lifts the eyebrow up. Simple!

Bunny Lines

People use their facial muscles differently. Some people develop vertical “11” lines when they frown while others also contract the muscles on the side of the nose creating a horizontal “bunny” line across the bridge of their nose. This can be easily treated with a single injection of botulinum to each side of the nose.

Mouth Frown

Do people think you look sad when you are not? Droopy mouth corners can be improved by reducing the activity of a muscle that pulls the corners of the mouth down, the depressor anguli oris. This allows the smile muscles that pull up on the corners of the mouth to function, unopposed. Easy as that.

Lip Lines & “Lip Flip”

Nothing makes one feel older than the fine lines that develop above the lip. Often incorrectly referred to as “Smoker’s Lines”, they can develop in smokers and non-smokers alike. When low dose botulinum is placed

above the lip in the circular muscle that creates puckering, the muscle relaxes, and the lines are reduced creating a more youthful look. Some people even get the added effect of a slightly wider upper lip leading to its nickname, the “lip-flip” or the “lip-pop”.

Dimpled Chin

Chin dimpling can occur with age if the mentalis muscles become overactive. Botulinum can be used to relax these muscles thereby reducing the dimpling, giving you a smoother chin.

Masseter

Teeth clenching and teeth grinding can cause enlargement of the masseter muscle which adds fullness to the face and angulates the jaw. Botulinum into this muscle not only relieves the symptoms of teeth grinding but can have the added benefit of slimming the face.

Neck Bands

The platysma is a broad superficial muscle that spans the neck from the top of the chest to the jawline. With age, it can develop bands and cords. Botulinum into these bands relaxes them, making them less visible. The result is a smoother, more youthful neck.

So next time you are in for your Botox® or Xeomin® appointment, let me know if you are interested in treating one or more of these areas. will evaluate your unique, expressive face, and we will decide if adding any of these sites would be a good choice for you.

Mosquito Traps

How To Make Mosquito Trap

Making a mosquito trap is ridiculously simple and the results are ridiculously amazing!

Mosquito traps are containers of water set up to intentionally attract mosquitos. Once the eggs are laid and the larva hatch, the little fish that are hiding in the water eat the larva preventing them from ever reaching adulthood. Because mosquitos only travel a few blocks in their lifetime, you can make a real impact on the mosquito population around your home.

What yo ee

1. Container

2. Water

3. Large leaves or other debris

4. Small fish

o

tai er

The containers should be deep enough to hold at least 3 inches of water - more is fine, but 3 inches would be the minimum. This container can be pretty and incorporated into your gardens or it can be a Rubbermaid tub that sits on the side of your house. It is all about what works for you.

Water

The water needs to be murky. Rainwater is great but any water that is allowed to sit for a few days will get murky.

Lar e Leave

Any type of large leaves or other debris that can float on the water will work. Mosquito larvae need a bit of cover, and this is what draws mosquitoes in to lay their eggs.

S all Fi h

Small fish are the key. Without the fish, all you have is a breeding ground for mosquitoes! Any small goldfish or minnows will work. You may even find mosquito fish (yes, those are real) at a bait shop. You only need one or two, but if your container is large, you can put more in.

Once this is set up, all you need to do is sit back and let nature work to your advantage!

Fun Facts Historical Galveston

Hello, fellow Wavers! Fishing is an ancient practice that dates to about 40,000 years ago. It has been an important part of human culture since hunter-gatherer times.

This month, let’s take a look at some of the most interesting fish found around Galveston Island.

ottle o e Dol hi

Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) are the only species of cetacean native to Texas bays and estuaries and the only ones you will see within Galveston Bay. They are an adaptable species. Fun Fact: Dolphins are mammals, potentially living over 50 years and raising several generations of offspring.

Researchers identify dolphins using nicks and notches in their dorsal fins that create a unique pattern, allowing individuals to be identified and tracked over time. new study by local researchers shows that as many as 200 dolphins in Upper Galveston Bay are year-long residents. Fun Fact: Squirt was the first cataloged dolphin in Galveston! He is a confirmed male and is one of the most frequently seen dolphins in the upper bay.

S a er eel

Texas A&M University at Galveston describes Snapper eels as having cylindrical body types that can grow to 6 feet in length. The teeth of Snapper eels are called “canine-like.” The species is typically a tan color with brown spots. It has a V-shaped, narrow snout from above but with a rounded tip. Snapper eels are found from the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. Fun Fact: The eels sometimes appear to lack eyes, which explains why they can be considered a “nightmare.”

Gro er

It was Gus Pangarakis, a Houston firefighter, who caught our state record Goliath Grouper at Galveston’s north jetties. Originally called “Jewfish,” today they are called Goliath Grouper. The name changed only a few years ago, but the jewfish’s name origin dates back to 1697. Fun Fact: The Texas state record for a grouper is 550 pounds!

Rio Gra e ichli

This exotic species is commonly sold in aquarium stores. Why is it found in the Galveston waters? It appears to be directly related to accidental or deliberate releases by home aquarists and tropical fish farms. As an invasive species, the adult Rio Grande Cichlid can reach up to 1 foot long and live for 10-13 years. It will eat almost anything. Fun Fact: Pet goldfish are also one of the most released fish in the wild. They feed on native vegetation and can destroy valuable coastal marshes, which are important habitats for native Finfish, Shellfish, and Waterfowl.

lac Alli ator Gar

Galveston fishing guide was shocked when he reeled in a rare, black Alligator Gar. Black Alligator Gar is a gar with a high level of melanin. Typically, alligator gars are more of an olive-brown

color. The fish can also grow up to 10 feet long and weigh up to 350 pounds according to National Geographic. Fun Fact: close cousin, the Golden Alligator Gar costs around $7,000. Only about one in every 10,000 Alligator Gar has this rare gold coloration.

Cutlassfish

The Cutlassfish derives its name from its curved shape, much like that of a cutlass sword. Fish of this family Trichiuridae (Greek for hair tail) are long, slender, and generally steely blue or silver in color. Adults can reach over 7 feet in length. They have no scales. Instead, their long, tapered bodies are covered with shiny, metallic silver skin. Fun Fact: When hunting for food, the cutlassfish lunges upward and seizes the unsuspecting victim. The forceful strike can propel it straight out of the water six feet in the air.

What a Yo atch

The bayside is known for Redfish (pictured here), Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Flounder. Fun Fact: The Galveston Bay depths only reach up to 10 feet.

However, on the Gulf side of the island, you can catch Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi, Red Snapper, Kingfish, Marlin, and a variety of Tuna (pictured here). Fun Fact: 676-pound bluefin tuna was caught near Galveston in March of this year.

One of the most striking species found in Galveston Bay is Sheepshead. They are a joy to look at. Not only are these fish beautiful, but they’re also as tasty as they come. Their black and white color pattern makes them stand out, while their delicious flavor makes them highly valued and sought-after. Fun Fact: Sheepshead fish grow squarish, human-like teeth as they mature so they can feed on hard-shelled prey.

Fishing is one of the main reasons visitors come to Galveston. Enjoying fresh seafood is this detective’s favorite pastime! hope you have enjoyed this month’s fun facts! Stay safe and cool in the sand, sun, and sea!

Two Island Favorites Mix It Up - A Revisit.

T his month, we are revisiting two of our favorite island restaurants that have collaborated to bring us some unique and delicious new offerings.

Pennie’s Tex Mex Take Out and Hubcap Grill have joined forces to combine their key specialties to create visionary gourmet hamburgers at Hubcap’s downtown Strand location. Taking Pennie’s prized tamales and mouthwatering smoked brisket, Hubcap Grill has created two new specialty burgers that have been a huge success.

Read on as we revisit these two fine businesses and tell the whole story.

Pennie’s Tex Mex Take Out

t was back in September 2018 that we last reviewed this iconic neighborhood barbecue restaurant that is as famous for its tamales as they are for its hill country style barbecue. While that may seem strange to some, it makes perfect sense if you understand the history of this small business and the Ochoa family that has owned and managed this business for several generations now.

Galveston family of Mexican descent, the Ochoa family has been in the meat and restaurant business since 1976 when Israel and his wife Connie purchased the small neighborhood Pennie’s meat market. From the

beginning, Connie, the family matriarch, started offering her freshly made tamales while Israel perfected his barbacoa recipe.

This is not as strange a combination as you may suspect as most historians trace our barbecue origins to the original Spanish settlers who were living here and raising cattle long before this became the State of Texas. By some accounts, the early Spanish explorers learned the art from the slow smoking techniques of the Taino-Arawak people of the Caribbean islands and brought that technique with them to Mexico and what is now Southwest Texas. nice story, but many cultures have some history of smoking and grilling meats and it is a certainty that the early Vasqueros lived off the land and their herds and barbecued meat was surely a large part of their diet along with the tamales of ancient pre-Columbian America.

The small business thrived and their reputation grew until Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston in 2008 causing the closure of this and many other island businesses as Galveston slowly recovered. In 2016, the family made the decision to reopen Pennies. After extensive renovations, the new Pennie’s opened with a twist. They would now serve only prepared barbecue, tamales, and menudo in a carry-out fashion.

Unfortunately, Israel passed in 2003 so he did not witness the closing or resurrection and restructuring of the business. Connie, the matriarch of the family, followed her husband of 57 years in 2021 leaving behind 8 children, 11 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Personally overseeing every time-consuming batch of tamales until the very end, she ensured that her recipes and techniques were mastered by her children and thus ensuring that future generations of Galvestonians will

40 Waves Magazine | July 2023 www.wavesgalveston.com

enjoy her famous tamales. Today, the business continues to thrive. While the entire family is involved in the business, the overseeing of the tamales is done by Isis Moreno (Connie and Israel’s daughter) and grandson Cameron Moreno. Such is the importance of the tamale preparation that the business is closed every week for three days for the complex and time-consuming process.

Their barbecue is among the best to be found anywhere. Using the highest quality of meats and special rubs combined with their carefully monitored smoking process, they are slowly increasing capacity while maintaining quality. If you only do one meat from here, try their chicken. It is my personal favorite and unlike anything you have ever experienced.

Their famous tamales are available with chicken, spicy jalapeno beef and pork, and beans for those that prefer meatless. All the tamales are gluten-free and the bean tamales are made with no animal fat.

They offer catering and see that business growing along with their mail-order shipping. Recent road closures are only the latest obstacle, but nothing slows this family down and most days they sell out by early afternoon so get there early or call ahead to reserve your order. As stated, this is strictly takeout although they have a small patio and tables should you wish to enjoy our sunny Galveston weather.

e last visited this restaurant in July 2020. Now, three years later, it is interesting to see how they have evolved. When local businessman Frank Caruso and his wife Teffeny took over this Galveston location of a small Houston franchise, it was struggling to find its footing in the very competitive Galveston marketplace. Through hard work and innovation, they have transformed this into a thriving business and popular happy hour destination. With their focus on high-quality food and innovative hamburger creations, they are redefining the gourmet hamburger.

huge selection of fine whiskey and craft beers keeps the place humming with a festive crowd most evenings. large menu of happy hour foods and drink specials, including the most outrageous Bloody Mary you have ever experienced, brings in the crowds. But the real draw here is their artisan hamburgers and hand-cut double-fried French fries.

High on the list of their artisan burgers are two new entrees. They now offer a tamale burger and a barbecue brisket burger.

But hey, this is supposed to be about collaboration. We will read about that in the next section where we revisit Hubcap Grill.

Always the innovator, Frank first approached Pennie’s with the idea of topping a burger with a tamale to create a new Tex-Mex experience. When it proved to be a popular menu item, he dreamed of other ways he could collaborate with Pennie’s to combine their two strengths. That resulted in the creation of their brisket burger. pairing of Pennie’s award-winning brisket with Hubcap’s hand-formed gourmet burger. It was an instant success and a partnership was formed between these two island favorites.

When they say the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, it is certainly true with this collaboration. Just one bite and you will be hooked and coming back for more. But that is true of all the burger combinations you will find here. Strange concoctions like the “Sticky Monkey Burger” - an unlikely blend of burger, peanut butter, bacon, American cheese, and banana come together in an explosion of flavor in your mouth, and strange though it may sound, it is delicious.

My personal favorite is their “Black and Blue” burger. order it stripped down with only grilled onions and blue cheese. Not for the faint of heart, their incredibly pungent blue cheese (of obvious high quality) takes your breath away at first bite. Not to everyone’s liking, it has me returning time and again. order it medium rare and it is a juicy mess that delights me every time. Get it with a side of fries - they have lots of concoctions and flavors, but prefer plain old-fashioned - and it is more than most people can finish in one sitting.

cannot say enough about those fries. get so tired of tasteless, mushy frozen fries; it is a delight to get the real McCoy. If you have never tasted a hand-cut fry properly double-cooked, you are in for a treat and you will forever be unhappy with any frozen version.

This is a fun place to meet friends and explore their extensive menu. Lots of seemingly weird combos here, but try them. They all come together in a blending of flavors that is difficult to describe. Do not be afraid to ask for your burger the way you want it. They are happy to oblige. For those that shun red meat, they have chicken sandwiches and

other alternatives including delicious salads. And did mention their fries? OMG, keep repeating, they are so good.

The crazy here extends to their drinks as well. Try their aforementioned Bloody Mary if you dare. It is the craziest creation on the island and is actually topped with a cheeseburger. Whimsical aside, Frank has stocked his bar with a huge selection of high-quality spirits and craft beers. This is a destination for those that enjoy the best whiskey and hand-crafted cocktails available. If you prefer wine, he has a thoughtful wine list that can accommodate most tastes. It is perfectly fine to just sit and enjoy your favorite cocktail with or without food.

The restaurant is located in one of the oldest historic buildings on our Strand. Galveston is reputed to be one of the most haunted places in Texas and Hubcap appears to have a resident ghost. am not kidding. have seen the videos. Far from malevolent, this haunt seems to be mischievous and friendly. The living people are also helpful and friendly. You can expect great service on every visit. This is a counter-service model as are many Galveston restaurants these days. You place your order at the counter and they deliver it to your table. The process is fast and the counter people are courteous and helpful. Rules change if you sit at the bar and you can expect conventional service there.

This is not fast food. Everything is prepared to order from their freshly made buns to their hand-formed premium beef. Relax and enjoy a pleasant and leisurely lunch or dinner.

They also have dog-friendly sidewalk seating. Handicap access is difficult in our old downtown area as there are high curbs and steps. Wheelchairs may be accommodated through the atrium doors.

Beach Bum The

Happy July, Wavers! There is a song that your Bum has always really liked but hadn’t heard for a while. That song is none other than “Galveston” performed by the late, great Glen Campbell. About a week ago heard “Galveston” played three times on the same day. loved it!

had a random thought the other day while was out cruising around in my ol’ scarab. It’s not like me to have very many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking…

Although have heard ‘Galveston” played countless times, have ever stopped to really think about the lyrics? Have ever thought about the true meaning of this wonderful recording?

“Galveston was written by the super-talented song riter imm e he song as first released in 1968 by a mournful-sounding Don Ho. Ho introduced the song to Glen Campbell when he appeared as a guest on the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. Campbell’s “Galveston” was released in early 1969. He performed it very up-tempo in contrast to the Ho rendition. a eston rose to n m er on the i oar ot ist an as certifie GOLD in October 1969”.

Many perceived “Galveston” as a Viet Nam protest song. Others, seeing am e resse in a mi itar st e o tfit on an a m co er c aime it as a patriotic song. Jimmy Webb proclaims that it is neither. According to Webb, the song is “about a guy who is caught up in something he doesn’t understand and would rather be somewhere else.” That somewhere else being Galveston.

omething that o r m fin s er interesting is that one o the songs verses changed from the Ho recording to Campbell’s version. I the o recor i there i thi ver e

Wonder if she could forget me

I’d go home if they would let me

Put down this gun

And go to Galveston

And dream of Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston

still hear your sea winds blowing still see her dark eyes glowing She was 21

When left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston still hear your sea waves crashing While watch the cannons flashing clean my gun, and dream of Galveston

still see her standing by the water Standing there looking out to sea And is she waiting there for me?

On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston am so afraid of dying

Before dry the tears she’s crying

Before watch your seabirds flying in the sun

At Galveston, at Galveston

I think you will too.

Hello Helen, have a new name for your worthless boyfriend, Fred. Freddie The Freeloader is the name that suits him. That and a few other names can’t mention in a family publication.

You are asking us what you should do. The answer is painfully obvious. You throw the bum out! Not a few weeks from now. Not a few days from now. Throw Freddie The Freeloader out today! Right Now!

Do not hesitate. Tell the bum to leave your house and never come back. Tell him you never want to see or hear from him again. Get Freddie The Freeloader out of your house. Change all of your locks and tell him if he ever attempts to come back, that you will have him arrested.

If for some reason he refuses to leave, there are many ways that you can make it happen. You may have to obtain legal advice if Freddie The Freeloader refuses to move out but believe me, you can get it done!

am very curious to see what Jan has to say about this situation. What say you, Jan?

This so-called talk you had didn’t work out as planned. You should have asked him for his share the first time he didn’t cough up any dough. know you probably love him and want things to work out. Talk with him and lay your cards on the table. If he agrees to help you with his share, then the question is......can you trust him to follow up?

You say that you two have known each other for 3 years. Didn’t you in all that time together pick up on his handling of money?

My advice is to have this talk now. If you drag it out, it will be harder and harder to get Freddie the Freeloader out of YOUR house.

CURTAIN GOING UP

AN ACTOR PREPARES: FROM AUDITIONS TO CLOSING NIGHT

We e i ith lyric of the i i ita le ole orter A other O i A other Sho fro the 1 4 roa ay ac ta e ical KISS E KA E

For weeks, you rehearse and rehearse, Three weeks and it couldn’t be worse. One week, will it ever be right? Then out o’ the hat, it’s that big first night! The overture is about to start, You cross your fingers and hold your heart, It’s curtain time and away we go, Another op’nin’, just another op’nin’, of another show!

there’s always that element of self-doubt - Was good enough? Did give him what he was looking for? Is he confident I’ll be able to take direction? Anyway, there was nothing left for me to do but go home with loins girded to wait for…

E AS ING ALL

AUDI IONS

It’s been said that all actors have intrinsically masochistic personalities since what other creatures enthusiastically choose a profession where employment is sporadic at best, non-existent at worst and you willingly set yourself up for disappointment, repeated rejection and even ridicule? Nowhere is this truth more self-evident than in the audition process where you really ‘put yourself out there’ by doing a ‘cold’ reading from the script that the director is casting. Nowadays, theatres will post audition notices on their web pages or social media outlets. This gives one a chance [if they are unfamiliar with the play] to do some web diving and see if there are any roles for which they feel they would be suited and possibly even download a copy of the script. So, was excited to read the cast for Ken Ludwig’s Leading Ladies as announced by ETC included some roles that were age-appropriate for this ‘seasoned’ thespian. After doing my research, figured was best suited for the role of Doc Meyers. Although our director [the multi-talented Sam Gorashko] read me for other roles and felt fairly confident about my performance at auditions,

This will either come from the director personally or sometimes from the assistant director/stage manager and the longer it takes for them to make it, the more nail-biting ensues. In about an hour, was ecstatic to be asked if would accept the role of Doc Myers and to learn who else was in the castseveral I’d worked with before at both ETC and COM Theatre, and, from the talented performances saw at auditions, was looking forward to working with the others for the first time.

FIRS READ RU

‘meet and greet’ for production and performance folks where scripts are distributed, rehearsal schedule, set design, and costume details are discussed followed by a seated read-through of the play by the actors. This is where my character development process begins as hear how others do their lines and begin experimenting with how will do mine.

RE EARSALS S AR

The first few rehearsals always consist of ‘blocking’ - a theatrical term for the exact positioning of actors on a stage during a performance. The word comes from practices used by theatre directors of the 19th century, who worked out the staging of a scene on a model stage using wooden blocks to represent each of the actors. Blocking is how the director creates visual stage pictures and is critical for me to help me get ‘off book’ - being able to recite my lines and remember my movements without the script in my hand. Nightly ‘stop-and-start’ rehearsals continue for approximately three weeks of fine-tuning blocking and character development, making adjustments where necessary bringing us to…

ELL WEEK

Virtually every theater I’ve worked in has referred to the final days of rehearsal leading up to opening night as ‘hell week’ as the set takes shape, scene changes, lighting and sound cues are added by the tech crew, costumes are finalized [TONS of quick changes in this show!] culminating in ‘final dress’ which is [hopefully!] a performance- quality run of the whole show and the last chance to fix anything before putting it before an audience on…

O ENING NIG

For as long as I’ve been at this, some of my friends [and my parents] who come to see me perform have told me they will skip opening night and see the show later in the run “when you’ve got it right”. heartily disagree with this theory as it’s always been my experience that there is a highly-charged adrenaline-induced excitement on the part of the cast and crew on opening night that will never be duplicated. Ladies opened to an enthusiastic crowd of first-nighters who gave us a standing ovation! The trepidation that one always feels prior to opening passed and we all breathed a sigh of relief as our hopes for a ‘hit’ were confirmed. Time to settle into…

Some positive reviews on social media and word of mouth made our audience numbers grow to include a couple of near SRO [standing-room-only] performances. As for the cast and crew, we were having as much fun backstage as we were on stage!

LOSING NIG

always get a bit sentimental when going on for that inevitable last night knowing that this will be the final time for me to create this episode of the magic that is live theater, but couldn’t ask for a better way to end this particular show! All of our audiences were great, of course, but this one was the topper - we had to ‘hold for laughs’ so much that it added 10 minutes to our running time! Talk about going out with a bang!

kisses, and even a few tears - as we leave the theater for the last time to go our separate ways and back to our ‘civilian’ lives. My one solace is that not only have renewed some great friendships, but also formed many new ones that will last a lifetime.

The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk Are secretly unhappy men because The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk Get paid for what they do but no applause. They’d gladly bid their dreary jobs goodbye for anything theatrical and why?

There’s no people like show people, they smile when they are low Even with a turkey that you know will fold, you may be stranded out in the cold

Still you wouldn’t change it for a sack of gold, let’s go on with the show!

Summertime and the hot temperatures that come with it have arrived. Along with the sizzling weather comes hot, short tempers. We have railed against the following horrible situation once before and we are going to do it again until something changes.

Most of us have experienced long lines and wait periods while we dutifully wait our turn to board the Galveston Port Bolivar Ferry. Many times, during the summer months, it can take 90 minutes or more to get on board.

While we patiently wait in the long lines, someone who thinks they are so much better and deserving than everyone else gets to go to the very front of the line.

HOW ARE THEY ABLE TO DO THIS?

They do it by claiming to have a major medical problem and a "state issued" medical priority pass which, in many cases, i fa e . It's hard to believe that all of these people have a medical emergency and are headed to the hospital or a doctor’s office.

The fa e medical pass situation makes it difficult for the folks that really do have medical priority and unfair for the "rule followers" that are waiting to board. There has to be a better way to verify a valid medical pass quickly, and fairly, during what is already a frenzied process of boarding the ferry.

Some people are seriously taking advantage of the system and the rest of us are suffering from it. It’s time for the Texas Department of Transportation to take action and correct this situation.

Renee Hartfield aka iPaparazzi

When Renee Hartfield casually snapped a few photos of a local band at a Galveston club in March of 2021, she had no idea she was embarking on a photography career that would find her shooting big-name musicians within just a few months.

The band was OMG, and they were performing at the popular live music venue, Sharky’s Tavern on 25th St. Hartfield was waiting for a late-arriving friend, so she began taking pictures.

“After the singer, Dave Ng, came off stage, he asked me to send the photos to him. The pictures were a little blurry, but Dave told me had ‘a good eye’. He saw something in me no one had seen before,” Hartfield said.

Born in 1984 and raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Hartfield said she had no photographic experience beyond using a disposable camera periodically and that her passion for photography is a visual manifestation of her deep love of music and the feelings she has when she listens to and watches a band.

In 2020, Hartfield was at a crossroads in her life in Mississippi. Her mother, a traveling nurse, helped push her toward Galveston.

“My mom got a job at UTMB. told people that one day was going to find an island that has everything need so never have to leave. was thinking more of the Virgin Islands or Hawaii, but was open to coming to Galveston,” Hartfield said.

After arriving in Galveston with her mother, Hartfield said she felt an immediate connection, eventually finding a job and a place to live. While full-time employment (currently working at Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston as a laboratory scientist) took much of her time, she made room in her schedule to follow her passion and photograph more bands.

“I love the community here. It’s very encouraging. Most people I’ve met are genuinely hopeful you’ll succeed at whatever you’re doing. It’s a magical place,” Hartfield said.

After photographing local bands around Galveston like OMG, The Examiners, Ned Evett, and many others, Hartfield went on to photograph bigger acts on bigger stages like Everclear, Lee Greenwood, Whey Jennings, Brandon McDermott Band, and Joe Satriani at events including Mardi Gras, the Galveston County Rodeo, and Lone Star Rally, as well as venues like Houston’s House of Blues and Scout Bar.

Before acquiring a Nikon camera (a gift from her mom Hartfield gratefully admits), she was using her iPhone to take photos. One day she decided to watermark her work with a company name and logo (instead of using her own name) and the iPaparazzi brand was born. Hartfield’s images have since been published and used on various websites, for social media promotion, and on posters including recently by Joe Satriani and Ned Evett.

Hartfield has no intention to stop shooting local bands, many of which have become her close friends she said but admits she does have her wish list of artists to photograph.

“Metallica is the reason love rock roll. If could shoot any band, it would be Metallica.”

Moving to another state and starting over was a challenge for Hartfield, made even more difficult by the fact that she has the autoimmune condition known as Lupus.

“A lot of people don’t know about Lupus. In my case, it just makes me tired sometimes, and have to recharge at home for a day. I’ve learned to live with my body.”

Many thanks to Diana’s Bartique for providing an extraordinary location for our shoot! Located at 2425 Strand in Galveston, Diana’s offers a unique women’s apparel shopping experience with a variety of drinks and snacks as well as live music on weekends!

Although she is successfully pursuing her photography career in a professional manner, Hartfield maintains a down-toearth approach and still sees photography as a simple extension of her love for music and “colorful things” she said. Vibrant colors and irresistible clichés aside, Hartfield’s future in photography looks bright.

looks bright.

Experienced Fishing Advice To Make Fishing Great Again Bent On Treble

EN ON RE LE

Bent On Treble: it sounds like something determined to cause trouble, and this treble hook is trouble for your potential target species. The twice-bending puts it in that “trouble” causing category.

This rebent treble hook of mine is a marriage of Mustad’s “Triple Grip” design and the Heddon “Excalibur” offset with its bends, resulting in an offset, sort of bent point/circle, treble. It’s a marriage arranged and used since the mid-1990s, starting with various “Standard Trebles”. The offset is designed to help rotate another hook point into penetration while the bent-in point does their sort of circle imitation.

The triple-grip bend naturally puts the hook points in line to the hookeye according to Mustad while that bend also forces fish to the hook elbow making it harder for a fish to throw, as does a circle hook’s elbow bend area. With these two features coming from different companies, there’s not a treble on the market with both of them; you have to twice bend your own. Is it worth the effort? In my opinion, it surely is.

The reduction of missed hookups and thrown hooks are definitely plus factors. These benefits come into play wherever you use trebles, diamond jigs, speed jigs, poppers as stingers/trailers, etc. The combo of bends also makes these trebles a bit safer to handle as opposed to standard models. They also have less chance of ‘trolling out on the chew” by a yellowfin tuna or wahoo whose jaw-chewing movement can roll standard treble hooks out of penetration at times. This treble hook rollout can also be a problem with kingfish, blackfin, and other assorted tunas. Dolphins also use this dehooking trick at times. These treble hook modifications will positively increase the odds of your hookup staying that way.

Bent inward points give in-line to hook eye alignment for surer hooksets

Closed gap forces hookup to bends elbow with its almost “triple-grip” shape

13/15 Degrees

“Excalibur” bend angle causes hook rotation at first penetration with possible second hooking to follow

As is the usual, it takes longer to read how to do something than it actually does to do it, as is the case with this treble hook re-bending. Using care for the whole procedure, start with the hook sharpening if that’s required. Sharpen the points before bending starts as it’s a lot easier and safer at that point. This is important in that a twice re-bent treble is more difficult to hold and have easy access to the hook point areas. For the twice bending, hold the hook shank in a small vise or needle nose vise grips, and with another pair of pliers, offset each bend about 13 to 15 degrees in relation to the hook shank, each in the same direction. With the offsetting complete, you close each hook gap by squeezing with the needle nose vise grips aligning the hook points with the hook’s eye.

With these steps completed, you will be close to the Excalibur/ triple-grip combination, close enough to work really well! See the illustration for the approximate angles and gaps. Once you have all of the essentials gathered, with a little practice, you should be able to rebend four trebles in about ninety seconds. Time well spent for the benefits you will see on your next outing.

60 Waves Magazine | July 2023 www.wavesgalveston.com

The bending, to somewhat align the hook points with the hook eye, decreases physical the hook size a bit. If it becomes a concern, going to a treble of the next size up from your original will help maintain the point-to-shank gap as the original treble. have gone with the original or a size up at times, both worked for me. If these trebles are to be used on a sub-surface, hard-body swimmer, a lighter wire treble might be the way to go if a larger hook is used, because of the gap reduction just mentioned.

Varying hooks weights upward affect the lure’s swim motion, as in slowing it down a bit, something to think about. Check out the lure’s swim motion at boat side, a slight retrieve speed increase might be needed to maintain the original swim motion.

slight downside of these double-bent trebles is that they are harder for you, or the deck crew, to remove from a fish’s mouth. It’s another example of their increased holding power. Work with and use them safely as they are harder to get out of you as well as a fish.

If it has a treble or treble hooks on it, this hook-turning trick of mine is made for you. While the term “sort of circle” was used, they are not

circle hooks. Hit these bent point trebles like a bass fisherman when a tuna, wahoo, or whatever tries to eat your presentation. As said earlier, they have worked for me for well over twenty-five years and counting.

The “Bent On Treble” modifications to an otherwise “box stock” treble hook is arguably one of my best in my over fifty-five years of offshore fishing. Bend some up, experience their hookups increase and holding power for yourself.

andouille sausage - 2

cups chopped

fresh salmon - 2 lbs.

egg noodles - 16 oz

queso blanco melting

chicken stock - 1 1/2 cups

half and half - 2 cups

butter - 2 sticks

flour - 2 tbsp

TSS lemon blackened - 2 tbsp

TSS Texas Pequin

Garlic Salt - 1 tsp

Remove skin from salmon, spray with ghee or brush with olive oil, and season with TSS Lemon Blackened. Grill at 350 degrees until 140 degrees internal temperature then set aside to cool. Once cool, break the salmon by hand into pieces.

In a deep twelve-inch skillet, brown the andouille on med-high heat until the fat is rendered out and the pieces get crispy. Next, add all vegetables and two sticks of butter. Continue to cook stirring often until vegetables are soft. Whisk in flour until smooth then add half and half, chicken stock,

hear that all the time, especially this time of the year. Yes, it’s hot, it’s humid and it’s mosquito time. Islanders get it. Most of us have gotten used to it, some never do, but they love our island life so much they just take it in stride.

We take a lot of things in stride which may be the reason we get tagged as a strange group of people who live on the island. Sometimes we come across as aloof or as having a “just don’t care” attitude, but I’m here to defend the people of the island. After all, I’m one of them, a BOI (born on the island). Others are identified as IBC (Islander by choice), visitors, tourists, or Island workers (those who come to the island to work and then return to the mainland to live).

The BOIs and the IBCs come to accept the heat, the humidity, the mosquitoes, and the hurricanes. Our attitude is one in which we take things as they come. We deal with whatever confronts us at the moment and then we move on. Sometimes things don’t get done in a timely fashion, and that can be a problem (city government is a whole other reflection!).

The people vested in the island do care and find most people on the island to have a big heart and will come to your rescue at the drop of a hat, or at least how quickly you can get out a text!

Ask any one of us and we will all say the same thing; people on the island are amazing friends. Yes, we like to meet at our local bars and have drinks and listen to live music with our local musicians and bands, like The Band Stranded, The Line Up, Radio Live, Britney Doyle, Keith Neubauer, and Geoff Fish to name a few. It’s fun and it fills our calendar, especially in the heat of summer. We can usually find a place with fewer visitors and tourists, but if they show up, we don’t mind as long as they behave.

No doubt July, August, and September are hot, but the islanders know how to survive the heat, the humidity, and the storms. It’s just a part of our lives and we go with the flow.

So, if you are a visitor or a tourist, find a local watering hole and enjoy a nice cold glass of water, soda, tea, or fruity drink to keep cool. If you wander into any one of the local bars, (and there are many such as Lucky Lounge, 3-Doors Down, Patrick’s, Bubba’s Beach Bar, Huli Huli Hut, The Drunken Monkey, Flip Flops, The Tipsy Turtle, The Playground, Alibi’s, Market Station, IPC, Sharky’s, Jacks, and Albatross, just to mention a few), you can find cold beer, wine, and set-ups.

Just remember, we Islanders don’t mind you coming - we just want you to behave! Hope to see you during the summer on the island. We will all have a cold one in hand!
