IN THE PRESS The Red Dot jury: “NI”, is a brand new and innovative garden parasol tailored for the luxury class, suitable for both day and night time use. During the day, it will keep you cool and under the shade. Then at night, the NI transforms into a beautiful lighting torch for your garden while you entertain your guests.

NI is an environmental friendly designed product and uses 0.1W LEDs integrated with a proprietary controller circuit to provide you 3 channels of lighting.

NI is user-friendly also. The OTD (One-touch dimmer system) is a proprietary-designed finger-sensing touch panel that allows you to control the light making it extremely easy to dim and brighten the 3-channel lighting system. The 3-channel control system consists of two channels of downward light ribs and one channel of upward light ribs, all controlled separately.

The down-light ribs uses colour temperature of 1800K LED candle light colour making it easy on the eyes at night time. The up-light ribs uses colour temperature of 2200K warm light colour setting the perfect mood for your guests at night. Being environmental friendly, the total power consumption of the NI system only equals that of three 60W incandescent light bulbs while providing a much brighter lit area.

NI uses a low voltage 12V LED output driver to power a system of over 2000 0.1W LEDs but generating very little heat. When the NI is closed, it system can be kept ON acting as a beautiful light torch for the garden.

Designed by Chris Chan, Terry Chow, Tom Rordinger, Joshua Wong, Sonia Lo and Philip Shiu, this umbrella is broad, comes with its own stable base, and boasts the benefit of lighting up your patio.

An A’Design Award entry, this concept integrates a one-touch dimmer and a remote that could control several of them simultaneously, should they be picked up by bars and restaurants. Consuming as much energy as three standard incandescent light bulbs, the Ni LED Parasol would have negligible heat waste and give off even more intense illumination should you desire it.

MEET THE DESIGNER

Terry Chow is a Hong Kong born self-taught designer.

For over 20 years, Terry worked in purchasing and trading firms that specialised in unique garden and bathroom products tailored specifically for the Scandinavian market.

With his years of experience in this field, he began to understand the needs of the market and think of ways to cater to them. This resulted in his design of the NI Parasol, which won the 2014 Red Dot Design Award.

decided to split my busy schedule and turn this into a small side project. The result is the NI parasol.

How did you come up with the concept for your product?

During a holiday to the Maldives last year, I stayed at a luxurious 5 star resort. As evening drew near with the light slowly fading, I noticed the final rays in the sky were diffused by the parasol I was under. I felt that the idea of a classic parasol could be reimagined to match a place of such beauty and luxury.

What makes FOXCAT unique?

FOXCAT embodies sustainability, luxury and minimalism. The vision is to balance design, green technology and function, creating high-end, energy efficient products that are intuitive to use.

In the same year, I went to meet with a hotel owner and he had similar thoughts. He wished to find a parasol with lighting. We scoured the market looking all over for such a product unsuccessfully so I

Our factory primarily produces bathroom furniture, with a specialty in aluminium and waterproof products.

We also have extensive knowledge of LED technology as many of our products contain LED components. We applied this knowledge in the creation of the NI Parasol.

Why did you choose the name NI? Ni means neither in Spanish. The NI Parasol is a product that is neither for the day nor the night; it is a product with multiple functions. In the day it provides shade from the sun and the rain. At night, it provides shelter from the rain as well as beautiful ambient light.

WHY NI? “NI� means either in Spanish, a name chosen to reflect the versatility of the Ni Parasol.

Luxury at home has never come in a simpler package. You can have beautiful ambient lighting on your private terrace or backyard in a neat package that easily suits any setting. The NI Parasol challenges established norms and brings us the future of outdoor lighting.

It provides the perfect lighting to suit any mood and caters to any setting. From romantic candlelit dinners, large dinner parties or even if you just want to enjoy the outdoors with a good book at night, the Ni can provide lighting for any condition.

The colour temperatures were carefully selected and the LED modules were strategically placed to create ideal lighting conditions. The down-light setting is suitable for events such as romantic candlelit dinners. The up-light setting is a warm light that creates the perfect mood for dinner parties with a large group of friends.

Besides being able to transition seamlessly from day to night, you can even enjoy the outdoors on a dim rainy day by switching on the light and coup up under the NI Parasol. In whatever setting, NI creates a perfect ambience!

Sustainability was one of the many major considerations in the design of the NI Parasol. Not only is the parasol made from sustainable materials, it is also energy efficient, requiring only an equivalent of three 60W light bulbs to produce a light that is brighter and reaches further.

The simple to use finger sensing One-Touch-Dimmer (OTD) control makes it easy and quick achieve the preferred lighting conditions.

Designed to be versatile, you will find that the NI Parasol matches any setting. It can even stand on its own despite the deceptively simple design. You can easily put one on your beautifully decorated patio and find that it will match.

The Ni can function as an outdoor standing lamp as it can be switched on whether the parasol is opened or closed.

But perhaps more importantly for businesses, it also means that resort, hotel and restaurant staff spend less time carting parasols around depending on weather and lighting conditions. This is because the NI provides everything needed in a deceptively simple looking package.

The OTD allows users to adjust the lighting exactly to their taste through three different light settings.

INTERACTION The NI Parasol is easy to operate. With its innovative One-Touch-Dimmer (OTD) systems, users may adjust the lighting levels by simply moving their fingers up and down the motion sensor control. The 3 different light channels make it easy to tailor the light perfectly to the occasion!

When operating several NI Parasols in a setting, the NI can be locked to only allow administrator control. A remote control is available to adjust 6 to 12 parasols simultaneously.

FEATURES Featuring a 3-channel lighting system controlled by a One-Touch-Dimmer (OTD), users may adjust the lighting to the desired lighting levels.

Adopting a 12V LED driver, the NI Parasol generates very little heat and provides an energy-efficient power supply for the system with over 2000 pieces of 0.1W LEDs. Using an outdoor powder coated strong aluminum frame, the NI is

hard wearing and can withstand harsh weather with minimal wear and tear.

Each individual light is connected with its own IP connector. This ensures users can easily change the LED. The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is isolated in different layers to avoid water damage.

The NI Parasol consumes 40W when used at medium setting. When used at maximum setting, the light can reach as far as 18 square meters.

The comfortable yet eye catching light is carefully tuned. It uses 1800K LED for the downlight and 2200K LED for the uplight. The 2200K LED uplight shines and bounces off the fabric, creating beautiful ambience.

Sunbrella fabric was chosen for its minimal shrink/stretch and its resistance to water, fade, stain, mold and mildew.

Heavy aluminum and brass are used to stabilise the parasol.

VARIATIONS The NI Parasol is currently offered in three sizes, three stand shapes and multiple fabric choices.

We offer Sunbrella fabric for the parasol. Sunbrella fabric is UV resistant, water resistant, breathable to prevent condensation, has minimal shrinking or stretching, fade resistant and stain resistant. Sunbrella comes in a range of colours, a selection can be seen below.
