In this issue of the Texarkana City Guide, there is plenty to learn about, including places to explore, things to learn, and experiences of the best of Texarkana in two great states: Texas and Arkansas.
Texarkana, founded in 1873, prides itself on the uniqueness of being one great city saddled between two states. Beyond its iconic state line, Texarkana has a rich culture of music, art, and history, much of which you will find in the heart of our city: the downtown.
In downtown, you will find the beautiful Perot Theatre, which hosts nationally-recognized performers and is home to both the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra and the Texarkana Community Ballet. The Arkansas Municipal Auditorium has a rich history of performers such as Elvis and Johnny Cash. The Texarkana
Ina McDowell was recently recognized with the Wilbur Smith Excellence in Historic or Preservation Education Award for her outstanding work with Main Street Texarkana.
Museums System provides educational opportunities for history buffs. The popular Four States Auto Museum displays antique vehicles, and the Regional Arts Center hosts exhibits of varying styles, themes, and mediums. Fabulous art galleries, specialized retail spaces, delicious local restaurants, and an array of public art and murals are also among the attractions.
Texarkana has seen tremendous growth in recent years in keeping with the national trend of revitalizing downtowns. Every city has its own tales to tell, and Texarkana has no shortage of colorful stories in its vibrant history. The community has moved forward by investing in its downtown, including its creation of the entertainment district. Numerous new living spaces are coming about, and ample outdoor fun is available for exploring and enjoying weekly events for the entire family.
Whether you are visiting, a lifelong resident, or thinking of making Texarkana your home, there is something for you here. So, take a moment to enjoy this issue of the City Guide, and then take plenty of time to stroll around downtown as you see, learn, and live the excitement!
Main Street Texarkana, the country’s only bi-state Main Street program, is celebrating nearly 20 years serving in its mission of revitalizing downtown by promotion and economic development through historic preservation. And while my top priority is Texarkana, appointment to the Main Street Texas Leadership Council allows our local program to benefit from work with four other regions of Texas. This honor recently gave us special recognition by Cecilia Abbott, the Texas First Lady in the historic Texas Supreme Courtroom. Whether you are staying or visiting, Texarkana is the type of place you just don’t forget. From the historical downtown rooted in the heart of the city, all the way up State Line, you will find yourself immersed in southern hospitality that invites visitors and residents alike to kick back, relax, and stay awhile.
Come take advantage of our beautiful city parks and all the great things to do in our community, or purchase a home and call Texarkana home; from our museums to the farmers’ market, you won’t be disappointed. Are you a golfer? The Texarkana Golf Ranch offers a highly-rated Texas golf course that’s open to the public. The beautiful Hilton Garden Inn and Texarkana Convention Center are both conveniently located near Interstate 30 and provide an excellent venue for conventions, weddings, family reunions, as well as many other events. Venture downtown to discover the uniquely breathtaking Perot Theatre that hosts must-see live theatre acts, a children’s series, and our very own Texarkana Symphony Orchestra. Check out The Silvermoon on Broad, a gorgeous event venue and home to the Silvermoon Children’s Theatre.
There is always something going on in Texarkana lately. You’ll see it on the faces of people walking on our refinished trails at Spring Lake Park and perusing the new Walk Through History signs. You will notice it in the freshly painted murals all over downtown TXK, and you will hear it in the banging of hammers on construction sites of historically redeveloped and brand-new properties.
It’s the downtown Main Street Christmas parade drawing thousands of people, and the lovely springtime Twice as Fine Texarkana Wine Festival at Spring Lake Park. It’s the baseball tournaments and the soccer leagues, and the atmosphere of three college campuses in one town. There is optimism on the faces, beauty in the spaces, and promise around spaces in our city.
Thank you for your interest in the southern Twin Cities, and we hope that if you’re here for a visit, you will decide to come back soon. There is no doubt in my mind that you’ll see for yourself why Texarkana, USA, is truly twice as nice!
Sincerely,
Mayor Bob Bruggeman City of Texarkana, Texas

We invite you to enjoy our city, and take time to discover for yourself what our thriving business community, our exceptional quality of life, and wonderful people have to offer!
Sincerely,
Mayor Allen Brown City of Texarkana, Arkansas
Drive down I-30, and you could be in any city in the country. However, if you get off at State Line Avenue and drive south for just a few miles, you will venture into what is unmistakably historic downtown Texarkana, with its one-of-a-kind U.S. federal courthouse and post office, which straddles the state line and is the the second-most photographed courthouse in the country (second only to the Supreme Court). A must-do for any visitor is to stand in two states at the same time. How often can you say you have one foot in Arkansas and the other in Texas?
While you are downtown, you should check out several true historical treasures, starting with the Perot Theatre, a 1924 fully-restored performing arts jewel. You also won’t want to miss our Regional Arts Center, the original location of the U.S. Federal Courthouse, developed by the Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council into a premier art gallery; grab a gift or souvenir at the For Arts’ Sake Gift Shop. Another great piece of history, the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium was built as a multi-purpose center in 1928, and Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley both played there. The Four States Auto Museum and its rotating selection of vintage vehicles is another tourist and local favorite, hosting group tours and annual car shows.
Modern conveniences mixed with historical charm
A history buff’s dream, the Museum of Regional History is the oldest brick building in Texarkana, now owned and preserved with regional artifacts by the Texarkana Museums System. The one-of-a-kind Draughon/Moore Ace of Clubs House is another site
to see: built from the winnings of a card game, according to legend, the house is shaped like a club from a deck of playing cards.
Other historical elements can be found outside of the museums. A multitude of beautiful churches, homes, and monuments make downtown the ideal location for a casual stroll. Broad Street offers something for everyone, with retail shops, restaurants, and a multitude of wonderful salons. Front Street Festival Plaza is the perfect location for outdoor special events, such as food fests, music concerts, art shows, and parades (including the ever-growing annual Main Street Christmas Parade).
For play, check out our parks downtown: Kidtopia is a multipurpose play space designed by kids, for kids! Adjacent to the playground is Skatetopia, designed by the local skateboarding community for skaters of all skill levels to enjoy.
Art lovers are sure to delight at the area’s multitude of murals. Start at the Scott Joplin mural, honoring the Ragtime genius who hailed from Texarkana, which is located across from the Perot Theatre. Next, walk south on Main, to a new mural, this one also depicting a Texarkana musical talent: Otis Williams of The Temptations. Then head down Broad Street to the Kress Gap, featuring colorful, photo-op–worthy works from talented locals. Afterward, proceed east toward the beautiful mural painted on the side of TLC Burgers and Fries, which resembles a vintage Dr. Pepper advertisement and features a portrait of Corinne Griffith, the silent-era movie star of the 1920s who was born in Texarkana. On the opposite side of the street, one block east, marvel at the larger-than-life Budweiser Clydesdales mural. A Texarkana mural tour wouldn’t be complete without viewing a Darlene Taylor original, so take a left on Wood Street to discover her north-facing “hometown heroes” piece.
If a walking tour isn’t enough to get your blood pumping, swing by Resilience Studios for dance fitness classes, including line dancing and pole. For more straightforward fitness, athletic types of all ages can check out Wacha Resolution, run by retired NFL player Lucas Wacha, to receive training only a professional athlete could offer. Baseball enthusiasts might also dip into Southern Athletic Baseball Academy, an elite baseball training facility, while golf lovers of all skill levels should definitely swing by Tee It Up Golf Lounge. If yoga is more your speed, catch a class at Prodigy Life—and then replenish with a smoothie from Good Luxe Juice Bar next door.
For those who’d rather lift shopping bags than barbells, downtown provides retail opportunities to delight. Retro lovers won’t want to miss the throwback apparel, housewares, toys, vinyl, and more at That Vintage Vibe on Broad Street or Quickfits on Olive Street. For contemporary men’s apparel, GQ Look has you covered; Moonstone & Moss Boutique provides women’s clothing and accessories, and the cutest baby clothes are for sale at Southern Grace Boutique.
The folks at Berridge Bikes can outfit the whole family with bicycles and gear, whether you want to toodle around town or hit the trails at Bringle Lake Park. Book lovers are sure to find a haven at the Stained Page, which sells used books as well as coffees, teas, and food. Those who practice New Age spirituality will love Crystal Moon Metaphysical Boutique—and body-art enthusiasts will want to make an appointment next door, at Crystal Ink Tattoos.
For beautifully curated furniture, housewares, and art, check out both locations of Olive Street Vintiques—and then drop into Logan Electric for the most fabulous light fixtures, lamps, and fans; for more than 100 years, Texarkanans have been visiting Logan on the same Broad Street block for their home lighting needs. Finally, if you happen to be in the market for a piano, pay a visit to Ragland Piano Co., the city’s oldest continuously operating business.
Hungry yet? Downtown boasts exceptional restaurants at various price points and levels of formality. For bistro fare, try Cafe Lucille, Emmie P’s, or the aforementioned Stained Page. For a down-home bite, look no further than TLC Burgers & Fries—and be sure to enhance your meal with their legendary seasoning blend, Red River Sand. For New American vibes and specialty beers, pop into Pecan Point Gastropub & Brewery. Or, if you’re more of a wine drinker, you might love the wine bar at Verona Restaurant, which serves elegant Italian dishes and a
special weekend brunch. And, right around the corner, Zapata Mexican Grill & Cantina provides craveable Tex-Mex in a vibrant atmosphere. For Mexican grub in a less formal setting, drop into Los Tacos. If hearty pizza and pasta are calling your name, snag a table at Joe’s Italian Bistro, and try their famous lasagna pizza. On sunny days, enjoy the rays on the porch at Hopkins Icehouse, and when it’s rainy, duck into Johnny B’s for nostalgic diner dishes.
Living in downtown Texarkana is a pedestrian’s dream. Several historic buildings—such as the Hotel Grim, 1894 Ritchie Grocery Store, and Buhrman-Pharr Hardware Company—have been renovated into loft housing, and construction is underway to convert the Texarkana National Bank building as well. Professionals of all stripes have found that working and living downtown is both convenient and charming.
After business hours, attend an event (perhaps at The Silvermoon on Broad or Crossties Event & Wedding Venue), enjoy a meal, or unwind with a drink from your favorite haunt—be it The Wild Hare (“the friendliest local dive”), the upscale Eagle Bourbon & Wine Lounge, The Arrow, The Hideout, the Banana Club speakeasy, or El Frio (which serves to-go frozen beverages). On Saturday, venture out for a race, festival, car show, parade, concert, or play. Return the book you borrowed from the Texarkana Public Library, and do a little shopping. You can even walk to church on Sunday morning. Everyone is welcome in downtown Texarkana. Join us! The growth is as exciting as the history.
The library staff organized a 1950s-themed ice cream social on April 25th, 2025. Below are LaShonta Simpson and Tammi Drewery. At the right are Laquita Dedmon, Glenda Moore, and Olivia Poulton.

exarkana Public Library’s 100th anniversary is a significant milestone of dedicated service to the Texarkana community, serving both Texas and Arkansas residents. The idea for a library started in 1918 as a “reading room,” originally funded by the Texarkana YWCA. By 1925, the Texarkana Public Library opened in a house on 7th Street at State Line Avenue. By 1979, the library had evolved from its humble beginnings to a modern institution and moved to its current location at 600 W. 3rd St., with over 100,000 books and magazines, digital catalogs, and even a drive-thru service.
This centennial celebration underscores the library’s enduring role in promoting literacy, education, and community engagement. With the rise of digital technology, the library continues to adapt and serve as a vital resource, recently securing a grant to assist patrons in navigating new technologies. Laquita Dedmon, longtime library employee and current assistant to the director, knows all too well the importance of the library as a resource for the citizens of Texarkana, USA.
“As someone who has worked at the Texarkana Public Library for 20 years, I’ve seen firsthand how essential our services are to the community,” she said. “The library is more than just a place for books—it’s a hub for lifelong learning, digital access, job readiness, and personal growth. Every day, we welcome people of all ages and backgrounds into a safe, inclusive space where they can connect, explore, and thrive.”
To commemorate this historic occasion, the library staff organized a yearlong series of events corresponding with decades, including monthly celebrations and a challenge for patrons to read 100 books during the centennial year. Notably, a 1950s-themed ice cream social was held on April 25th, 2025, offering free Blue Bell ice cream to visitors, as library staff greeted patrons in 1950s attire.
“As we celebrate our 100th anniversary this year, we’ve introduced a variety of monthly events that have brought new energy and diverse audiences through our doors,” Laquita said. “We’re excited to conclude this milestone year with a special gala at the Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Building on December 12th at 7 p.m., and we warmly invite the community to join us in honoring a century of service to the twin cities.”
The centennial gala not only honors a very rich history but also reaffirms the TPL’s dedication to serving as a cornerstone of knowledge and community connection for generations to come.
Arts enthusiasts, history buffs, and entertainment aficionados will enjoy the diverse cultural offerings Texarkana provides for its citizens and guests. For visitors and residents alike, downtown provides activities for the entire family to enjoy.
The ArtsPark, located at the corner of West 4th Street and Main Street in downtown Texarkana, is a public green space and art park. The center of the landscaped area is home to a three-dimensional timeline of historical events, containing in its resin era-appropriate items that trace the history of Texarkana from the Caddo era to the turn of the 21st century. Students from area schools selected events from different eras for the timeline. In the front stands a 140-foot mosaic strip, created by artist Sheila Keever with the assistance of children participating in TRAHC’s “Color Texarkana” program. The mosaic mural depicts recognizable aspects and buildings that are unique to the Twin Cities. Colorful and picturesque, the park is a popular space for photographs and picnics.
The ArtWall, TRAHC’s unique outdoor exhibit space, features 44 large-scale paintings, which are changed quarterly. The ArtWall curves from the ArtsPark, skips over an alley, and ends on the side of the Regional Arts Center. Area students and other community members create the colorful artwork displayed on large weatherproof panels. The ArtsPark project was made possible through generous donations from Alcoa.
The breathtaking Horace C. Cabe Great Hall, located within the Regional Arts Center, is the perfect space for weddings, receptions, reunions, business seminars, press conferences, celebration parties, and other special events. From the historic copper elevator to the golden eagle that once presided in the building’s former life as a federal courthouse, this building has a rich heritage that is felt from the moment you walk in the doors.
Located deep within the heart of downtown Texarkana in the Arkansas Entertainment District sits Crossties Event & Wedding Venue. Originally built in the early 1900s, the venue has been completely restored but retains its historic charm. Painters, sculptors, musicians, seamstresses—you name it. Artists of all mediums fill the streets of downtown Texarkana on the second Friday of each month. Called Downtown Live!, this event lasts from 6 to 9 p.m., mostly along Broad Street. On the sidewalks, artists create out in the open, for all to see—and maybe even purchase. Walking down the street, you hear live music from local musicians and smell the delicious fare being cooked at various local restaurants.
There is talent in all of us and Downtown Live! brings many forms of art. “
”
Downtown Live! was initiated and is supported by community members Ina McDowell and Joseph Raymond, among many others. “Downtown Live! began as an opportunity to showcase our local talent with the gathering of artists on Broad Street. It now serves as a showcase for our downtown retail, local restaurants, and beautiful historic landscape that can only be seen in our downtown area,” Ina said. Restored structures such as the famous Hotel Grim provide the ideal backdrop for such an event, allowing people to admire the historic area’s architecture while basking in the current moment.
Events like Downtown Live! introduce people from all parts of the community to local talent and grow the already-vibrant arts community. As each month passes with a new event, more people attend and learn.
“There is talent in all of us, and Downtown Live! brings many forms of art,” Ina said. “You just might discover the artist in you by attending the event and seeing the many forms of art.”
