The Way I See It...
PUBLISHER’S
Robin Rogers, Ed.D.
Every year, I look at the pictures of the 40 people who have been selected for the annual “Fabulous 40 and Under” because of their achievements and successes, and I then reflect on the meaning of success.
As a kid, I thought “rich and famous” was the way to go. But, alas, I am neither, yet I am very happy. And at 51, I look at the “rich and famous,” and most of them, I would never trade lives with anyway. It would be nice to live like Oprah for a week or so and maybe have a driver. I say that because somebody actually looks after her appearance, and unlike me, she would never go to the store with crazy hair, no makeup, wearing yellow flip flops, and sporting a Nirvana shirt. And, a driver would just be nice. I’m a horrible driver, so I don’t like to drive out of the neighborhood, much less to Dallas or heaven forbid, further than that.
In my 20s, I started raising kids, so I knew “rich and famous” was probably out for sure. I consider that decade to be my cartoon watching, bottle making, stretch pant wearing, fast food chefing, sleep deprived and zombiewalking years. One time, we got to talking about how long I had bought diapers consistently, and the total number of years was 10. Hmmm. I do have shoes in my closet that are older, but 10 years is an awfully long time to ring the register on diapers.
When I was 28, I bought Four States Living Magazine , jumping into a whole business with no clue whatsoever. Thank goodness for having learned to sell cars while I was in college. If you can sell, you will always be able to feed your family. Without sales, most businesses are worthless. That’s a pretty good piece of advice there that no one teaches in a formal education; find a product

you believe in, and then convince someone else of the features and benefits of that product until they have to own it. It’s hard to sell something you don’t believe in, so choose your products carefully.
Four States didn’t make money for YEARS, but I worked hard in my 30s, trusting that hard work really would pay off eventually. Taking chances is what we should all do during our 30s. It is a time when if you buy a business and it fails, that failure will not define your entire life or follow you if you start again. For me, it was making sure my kids were safe, there was always a roof over our heads and food in the fridge, and the people who worked for my company always received their paychecks on time. Somehow, we pulled it off.
In my 40s, I finished a doctorate in education and started to travel more. Seeing the world and sharing experiences with my kids before they flew the coop was my driving motivation.
So, now that I am over 50 and I am looking at the new “young people” who are doing cool things, I measure success much differently than in the past. Do you remember having a little book called “Life’s Little Instruction Book?” It was plaid covered, and on the back of everyone’s toilet in the nineties, and it had a sentence or two of practical advice on every otherwise blank page. I still have that book, and it is dog-eared to one quote: “Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than one with all the facts.” Who knows what can happen next?
I hope I have a few decades left to live and do cool things. I am not sweating an all-star new career coming on soon, but you never know. Laura Ingalls Wilder

didn’t publish her first book until she was 64. Ray Kroc, in spite of diabetes and bad arthritis, was 52, when he franchised McDonald’s. Nolan Ryan pitched his seventh and last no hitter at 44. And, my final favorite story of never give up on yourself surrounds a guy named Harland.
Harland was a sixth grade dropout, an army muletender, and had learned the skill of cooking for his brothers and sisters to help his mother because his father died early in life. He tended a gas station and served food out of a little restaurant in the station. When he hit retirement age, he knew he couldn’t survive on the $100 retirement check he received each month. So, at 62, Harland set out to visit 1,000 restaurateurs to try to partner with him on his secret “herbs and spices chicken recipe.” Most of those men laughed at the old guy, who always wore a starched white shirt with starched white pants. Finally, a man in Salt Lake City helped Colonel Harland Sanders, at age 62, open his first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in 1952. Needless to say, a legend was born again at the ripe young age of retirement. I love that story!
Now that I am older than 50, I look at the faces on the cover, and many I don’t know, but I want to; they are obviously doing great things in the community that I love and call home. Once in a while, I question where my years went, and then I remember all that is left to do. Keep reinventing those things that make us passionate, and life will always be an adventure.
The people on the cover realize working toward goals. I hope you enjoy their stories, and as always, thanks for reading FSLM!

LITERACY COUNCIL OF BOWIE AND MILLER COUNTIES GAMESHOW AND DRAW DOWN
Money raised in the Literacy Council’s Gameshow and Draw Down fundraiser will help the Texarkana-based nonprofit organization provide educational opportunities for its adult and teen students. The family friendly event was held on July 23 at Oasis Community Church, located in Central Mall in the former men’s Dillard’s. The “Price Is Right” inspired evening was hosted by Derrick Keener, and Dawn Parker invited contestants to “come on down!” Both Keener and Parker are on-air personalities from Texarkana Radio Center.
Executive Director Jenny Walker said the event was her favorite fundraiser yet. “In the past, the Literacy Council has incorporated the drawdown with the Spelling Bee, but this year we decided to separate the events to keep our crowds smaller,” she said. “When our board and I started planning, we knew we wanted to add another component to the drawdown that could get more people engaged. I thought of the “Price is Right,” and we started planning. It ended up being the most fun of all of the events we have had! Derrick and Dawn really made the night so much fun and kept us all laughing. It will definitely become a new tradition for the Council!”

AbbieStrunc, Ph.D.
age: 39 | University Professor and Department Chair | Sam Houston State University
“I work in educator preparation, and it’s so important to me,” Dr. Abbie Strunc explains. “Texas has 5.5 million students enrolled in K-12 public schools across the state. They all deserve a quality educator who is prepared to guide and support their education.”
Best Piece of Advice:
“THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS NEVER OR ALWAYS.”– STEPHEN
PRINCE, ABBIE’S BROTHER
Before becoming a university professor and department chair at Sam Houston State University, Abbie worked at Texas A&M University-Texarkana for six years. Her greatest professional accomplishment is earning tenure this year. She admits that it has been a fun, but long journey, and she is very proud of the work she put in as part of this process.
Personally, Abbie’s family means the world to her. Married to John, they have three children: Wesley (13), and Emma and Audrey (9). “I’m so proud of my kids and who they are growing up to be,” she says. “Watching them grow into the people they are meant to be is my greatest gift.”
Although she hasn’t been able to travel much recently, Abbie loves exploring new places and meeting new people. She has served as vice-president of PG Connection for two years and joined Women for A&M-Texarkana to give back to a community that supports the regional need for a university. She admits, “Texarkana’s collaborative educational community is one of the area’s greatest strengths.”
Because she is so focused and attentive to her career choice, Abbie sees herself continuing to serve educators in Texas in educator preparation for many years to come.

“I once met former President George W. Bush while I was out for a jog.
When we lived in the Dallas area, some friends and I used to do long training runs on Saturday mornings at a nearby state park. We were out one Saturday morning, and he (George W.) came to ride some of the mountain bike trails. Such a random meeting, but I have the grainy, sweaty picture to prove it.”

Best Piece of Advice:
“TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF.”
- COMEKIA ISLAND, ALEXUS’ MOTHER
A phenomenal, inspiring, and hardworking teacher, Alexus Paxton teaches TASD’s future leaders of America. “Surviving my first year of teaching during a pandemic was my greatest professional accomplishment,” she acknowledges. “Having an impact on a child and watching them grow is so fulfilling. Teaching the children in my community is a dream come true; my students are depending on me. I’ve been dreaming about being a teacher since second grade, so I truly believe in manifestation. I pictured myself in this position too many times! Being nominated for Fabulous 40 and Under is incredible, too! This is an accomplishment that I won’t ever forget.”
As a first generation college student, Alexus considers graduating from the University of Central Arkansas and obtaining a bachelor’s degree in science while minoring in education as a huge personal achievement. She considers it a privilege to make her family proud while also giving her little sister someone to look up to ... she says this is the “best feeling ever.”
Working out, painting, and cooking are how Alexus spends her free time. “Cooking is my favorite because food is so yummy,” she says. “I also like having cooking competitions with my boyfriend and little sister. Those are also a few of my self-care regimens. Self-care is very important and a key component to a healthy lifestyle.”
Alexus enjoys volunteering with the youth softball association when possible. She tries to be a helping hand during practice while showing the girls how to cleanly field a ground ball or keeping the dugout organized. She feels that softball is so exciting, and she really enjoys being in an empowering atmosphere.
In 10 years, Alexus will be starting her 12th year of teaching, and she looks forward to owning a luxury Black-owned boutique which will focus on embracing all body types and styles. She concludes, “My collections will also be very exclusive! The idea of wearing something nobody else has is a great feeling.”

TEXARKANA MUSEUMS SYSTEM’S SCOOBY DOO MYSTERY PARTY
The Texarkana Museums System hosted a Scooby Doo Mystery Party on July 31 at the P.J. Ahern Home. Retro TV dinners from Benchmark American Brasserie were served to guests.
The mystery party crime scene was set in 1971 when the Texarkana Historical Society was working diligently to open the city’s first museum. With strange things happening to delay the museum’s opening, the plot thickened as the party-goers guessed whether the happenings were accidental or sabotage. The suspects were plentiful as Scooby Doo helped solve the crime!

AmandaLance
age: 37 | Director of Hempstead Hall & Workforce Development | University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana
Amanda Lance’s core values are community, family, and creativity. Her mulfi-faceted career allows her to meet many people, provide positive experiences for others, and focus on people in the community who are leaders. As the director of Hempstead Hall, she works to provide cultural experiences for the community. “Through Workforce Development, I work with local agencies to provide world-class training to our region. Both aspects help to fulfill UAHT’s mission to provide quality life experiences and lifelong learning to our citizens,” she explains. “Everything I do through my roles at the college are because I want to see Hope and Texarkana continue to thrive. I want to be part of the group of people who are making this an area where a younger generation wants to live and continue to expand the legacy that’s been left to us.”
Best Piece of Advice:
“WE’VE GOT THIS.”
– LINDSEY HONEA, AMANDA’S FRIEND AND CO-HOST
Through Amanda’s job, she feels fortunate to be part of LeadAR Class 19. This program runs through the UA Department of Agriculture and is one of the oldest leadership programs in Arkansas. Classes travel around the state, nation, and world to learn about the challenges and accomplishments of each place the group visits. This two-year program has already allowed Amanda to grow significantly.
Every week, Amanda also co-hosts a podcast, “Hope Grown,” with three friends: Jennifer Block, Jennifer Cunningham, and Lindsey Honea which features local happenings. They interview people in the community who are making things happen and casually discuss why these events are beneficial.
Connecting with people, learning more about the Hope community, and helping connect dots for herself and others are near and dear to Amanda’s heart. “I love that I have found a network of friends and family who truly enjoy giving back to our community and are up for whatever crazy idea I might throw at them (including writing/producing/directing two plays in 2020),” she mentions.
Amanda serves as a board member for the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council and is the corresponding secretary for the Junior Auxiliary of Hope. She is president of the Hope Rotary Club and helped bring Hope USA.com to fruition. This is an allinclusive website for the county and features the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Corporation, the Tourism Commission, and a community calendar that informs visitors and residents alike of all that is happening in Hempstead County. “Since I am mostly located in Hope, the majority of my community involvement is centered in Hempstead County. But I could make the argument that a strong Hope benefits Texarkana at large because I believe we are all better together than we are apart. If we want the region to continue to grow, we have to individually make investments across the entire region,” Amanda says.

“Early in my twenties, I learned to team rope … not well by any means. But this is always a fun fact to pull out and watch people’s reactions because it’s so surprising to people who know me now! To me, it’s proof that we’re ever-evolving and anything can be fun or worthwhile if you give it a shot.”

age: 32 | Director of Operations | Texarkana Emergency Center & Hospital
Best Piece of Advice: “NEVER COMPROMISE YOUR INTEGRITY.”
– CINDY YOUNG, AMY’S MENTOR/FRIEND
Texarkana Emergency Center & Hospital’s director of operations, Amy Mascoe, makes sure that the hospital has everything they need to make each patient interaction the best it can possibly be. From managing contracts for medgas to keeping the center’s hospitality stations stocked with the best snacks, Amy takes care of every little detail! “I love being able to help equip our team to perform at the best of their ability,” she explains. “I get to go to work every single day at a place that I’m proud of and work with an administrative team that cares about not only the patients but their employees, too.”
Amy’s greatest professional accomplishment was making a career change in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. She went from being a physician liaison, working primarily in a marketing function, to diving straight into learning what it takes to have a hospital operational and a brand new facility inspected and accredited.
Engaged to Jeremy Tankersley, Amy loves being a mother to her two daughters, Landry (6) and Logan Blair (5). She enjoys spending time with her girls, planning trips with Jeremy, and grabbing brunch with close friends.
“I enjoy volunteering and giving back when and how I can, whether that’s through opportunities that arise at TEC or through personal endeavors that I am passionate about,” Amy admits.
Amy looks forward to continuing to do exactly what she is doing right now in the future and potentially expanding to consult with other facilities that are opening. “I love learning new aspects of keeping a healthcare facility operationally sound. I love working for Dr. Young, Cindy, and all of the physician-owners at Texarkana Emergency Center & Hospital.”

AshleyAylett, Ed.D., MBA
age: 36 | Vice Chancellor for Academics | University of Arkansas Cossatot
As the Vice Chancellor for Academics, Dr. Ashley Aylett oversees so many facets of University of Arkansas Cossatot’s educational programs, especially many of the “behind-the-scenes” components of education. “A major part of what I do is work to develop new programs, ways to attract students, and partnerships to benefit current and potential students,” she describes. “As a community college, we serve such a diverse population – high school students, non-traditional students returning to education, students starting with us before transferring, and students working toward a technical skill set. I absolutely love helping students in working toward their dream! Our commencement ceremonies are always such an emotional and joyful time for me. It’s so fulfilling to watch students as they reach that milestone and walk across the stage in front of their support group. As a smaller institution, we have the ability to know the majority of our students and their personal journeys, and that makes it even more special!”

Piece of Advice:
“YOU DON’T NEED GOOD LUCK. YOU MAKE YOUR LUCK.”
– BRUCE FLEMENS, ASHLEY’S FATHER
Ashley’s family is her greatest personal accomplishment. She and her husband, Wes, have two children, Adalie and Cash. “I am extremely proud of my husband and both of our children,” she says. “I’ve been blessed with a support system that allows me to balance a professional career and being a mother.” As a family, the Ayletts spend their summers on Lake Greeson and are avid UA Razorback fans. She loves taking adventures with her family, spending time on her family’s farm, landscaping, and exercising.
Earning a doctorate in Community College Leadership and being selected the Outstanding Doctoral Student for the program at the University of Arkansas serves as Ashley’s greatest professional achievement. Although it was time-consuming and not the most enjoyable journey for her, after defending her dissertation and being welcomed back to the room as Dr. Aylett, Ashley knew that her educational milestone was something that she would treasure forever.
Helping out in the community is important to Ashley. She is involved in Rotary Club and serves on the Little River Chamber board and the Ashdown PTO. She says, “My main contribution is developing and building partnerships that benefit the future workforce pipeline.
“I try not to think too much about 10 years from now because both of my children will be in college or starting college,” Ashley concludes. “However, I do hope that I’m still making a difference in higher education.”

BrandonNorman
age: 28 | Self-Employed Fashion Designer | Duhbuhlyoo
A visionary in the field of fashion, Brandon Norman is the creative director and seamster of a custom evening wear line. Since an elementary school student, he has been involved in the field of arts in some capacity. So it was only fitting that he chose a career that was centered around the arts.
“Every day, I am just amazed with myself, coming from a small city to living in a major city in the nation to having my own bridal business,” Brandon admits. Whether working with a celebrity on a beautiful evening gown or designing a wedding dress for a friend, Brandon personally feels like each and every day is a great accomplishment.
Best Piece of Advice:
“LOVE WHAT YOU DO, AND YOU’LL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE.”
— CLIFF NORMAN, BRANDON’S FATHER
Professionally, Brandon has a hard time choosing his greatest achievement, but being a part of history by creating custom looks for the first transgender Ms. Nevada 2021 for the USA pageant definitely ranks high on the list.
Dubbed a “fashion genius” by many, Brandon enjoys giving back to his hometown community of Texarkana. “Back when I was making prom gowns, I would select a girl who stood out and achieved good things their senior year and design a complimentary custom gown for her,” he says. He has also been a guest speaker during workshops in the community to explain what it takes to be in the fashion industry to those interested in every facet of the business, whether modeling, photography, or designing.
Although he currently stays very busy bringing high-end fashion to the Dallas area, when he has time to shut off his brain and relax, he enjoys painting, fishing, and going to Top Golf and Andretti Indoor Karting and Games.
Brilliant and humble, this native Texarkanian’s future looks very bright. He looks forward to opening a storefront, making the cover of “Vogue,” expanding his bridal line worldwide, and owning an art school dedicated to fashion in the East Texas region.

age: 34 | Family Medicine Physician | CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic
Best Piece of Advice:
“GOD HASN’T BROUGHT YOU THIS FAR TO LEAVE YOU. HE’S GOT THIS, AND HE’S GOT A PLAN.”
—GAYLE COLLARD, BRITTANY’S MOTHER
Always eager and willing to meet the healthcare needs of the Texarkana community, Dr. Brittany Ackley works as a family medicine doctor in an outpatient clinic. She chose medicine as a career because she knew that she wanted to help people with their health. “I enjoy working in the clinic setting, as I get to really know patients (and many times entire families) and follow along with them for years,” she explains. “I am a problem solver by nature, and relish getting to solve/‘fix’ a patient’s problem/health concern.”
An inspiration to young women considering a career in the medical field, Brittany acknowledges that graduating from UAMS Family Medicine residency was a huge feat for her. Those three years she spent in training really helped mold her into the caring and compassionate physician she is today.
With friendships that are over 25+ years old, Brittany feels fortunate that she has been able to maintain close relationships over the years. “I do everything I can to make them a priority, as these people are the ones who have been present for both the mountain top moments, as well as the valleys,” she comments.
For the last few years, Brittany served on the local board for the American Red Cross. She has assisted with smoke alarm installation and education, as well as a recent telethon to help raise money for this area. More recently, she serves on the board for CASA for Kids and is looking forward to becoming even more active in this organization. She is also a member of CHRISTUS St. Michael Friends of the Foundation.
When she’s not busy taking care of patients, Brittany loves spending time with her friends, family, or rescue dog, traveling to or exploring new places, and attending concerts. Personally, her hopes for the future include getting married and having a couple of kids. Professionally, she looks forward to mentoring new physicians.

–GERTRUDE DOLEIDEN, BRITTANY’S GREATGRANDMOTHER
Brittany Patton’s greatest professional accomplishment is becoming part owner of Ironwood Grill. “I have put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into that restaurant for the last 10 years,” she says. “It was so nice to have the reward from all the hard work.”
As a managing partner, Brittany oversees the front of the house staff at Ironwood and makes sure that the day-to-day operation flows smoothly.
“I also take care of the hiring and training of the staff,” she continues.
“I enjoy watching people grow and making long lasting relationships with the guests.”
For fun, Brittany and her family enjoy going to Dallas, visiting the zoo or aquarium, taking trips back to North Carolina to visit family, and going to the beach. Her greatest personal accomplishment was graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and her best accomplishment, by far, is raising her three girls, Hadley, Ava, and Willow!
“My husband, Paul, and I give back to Texarkana by giving to Toys for Tots every Christmas. We also are involved in giving to the Texarkana Baptist Children’s Home,” she explains. “We enjoy giving to Walking for Williams because Williams has a special place in our hearts.”

age: 35 | Lending Assistant | Guaranty Bank and Trust
Best Piece of Advice:
“EVERYONE HAS A PURPOSE IN LIFE, AND PART OF YOUR PURPOSE IS GIVING BACK TO OTHERS, WHETHER IT IS IN YOUR COMMUNITY, CHURCH, JOB, SCHOOL, OR FAMILY.”
– BRENDA RANEY, BRITTNEY’S GRANDMOTHER
As a lending assistant at Guaranty Bank and Trust, it is Brittney Frost’s responsibility to maintain the loan department’s files, prepare and review documents for loan closings, order required due diligence items, and work closely with title companies to ensure closing goes smoothly for customers. “I work closely with the loan officer to build and maintain positive relations with all customers and potential customers,” she explains. “I chose my profession because I enjoy working closely with my customers to insure that we are meeting their financial needs and providing them excellent customer service.”
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Business from SAU, Brittney helped form two nonprofits in Texarkana and serves as vice president on the boards of both. In 2014, Brittney and a group of friends formed Friends for a Cause, a nonprofit organization that was originally formed to help cancer patients with expenses insurance would not cover. In 2020, Jade Bredenberg and Brittney formed Beyond the Badge of TXK. Since they are law enforcement wives, they formed this group where other wives and law enforcement supporters come together and support first responders.
In 2018, Brittney was awarded the +1 Service Award. Awarded to a Guaranty Bank and Trust employee who consistently goes above and beyond to deliver an exceptional experience for their customers, whether internal or external, receiving this award is Brittney’s greatest professional accomplishment. She always strives to go above and beyond to help people both personally and professionally.
In her spare time, Brittney enjoys spending time with her husband, Travis, and their two English bulldogs, riding with Travis on his motorcycle, and going on vacations. Spending time with friends is also fun for Brittney, as well as binge watching TV shows when she can.
In the next 10 years, Brittney sees herself advancing in her career in banking while continuing to serve the community though Friends for a Cause and Beyond the Badge of TXK.

age: 28 | Marketing Representative | SignatureCare Emergency Center
Best Piece of Advice:
“MAKE GOOD CHOICES, DO THE RIGHT THING, AND KNOW THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS LOVED.”—BARBARA WALKER, BRITTNEY’S DEAR FRIEND, SECOND MOTHER, AND UNOFFICIAL LIFE COACH
“I am the marketing representative and physician liaison for SignatureCare Emergency Center. Essentially, I create and maintain relationships with healthcare providers, our community, and everyone in-between,” Brittney Haynes explains. “My primary focus is making sure people recognize and understand the state-ofthe-art services and incredible patient care that our facility provides. I also work with many different local organizations and schools on events, sponsorships, and programs.”
Currently, one of Brittney’s greatest professional accomplishments was being invited to serve on the board of the Greater Texarkana Young Professionals.
Earlier this year, she was nominated to serve as the vice chair, and she is still so grateful and excited for the opportunity she has been given. Additionally, she was also recently selected to be in the Leadership Texarkana Class 2021-2022, and she couldn’t be more excited!
Being a graduate of Henderson is one of two personal accomplishments that makes Brittney very proud. The other one is being married to Brandon, who Brittney says is “the most amazing person I know.” In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, working in her flower beds, traveling to new places with Brandon, crafting and making wreaths, and going to the lake with her family.
Brittney’s involvement with Greater Texarkana Young Professionals is very important to her. “We nominate local charities and not-for-profit organizations each quarter. We plan and organize networking events to raise money and awareness for the group that is chosen,” she explains. “In addition, we also encourage our community to come together to support and make donations to other organizations like the Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter.”
In 10 years, Brittney hopes to be an established leader and volunteer in the Texarkana community. She plans to have a few more Golden Retrievers (she currently has two, Goose and Ava). She also aspires to have the bestlooking garden and landscaping on her block, too!

age: 37 | Owner of Perfection Steamers, LLC | Investigator with Bowie County Sheriff’s Office
Best Piece of Advice:
“BELIEVE NOTHING THAT YOU HEAR AND ONLY HALF THAT YOU SEE.”
—ORIGINALLY BY EDGAR ALLEN POE, BUT OFTEN REPEATED BY WAYNE ALLISON, CHRIS’S FATHER
As a child, Chris Allison remembers seeing the military recruiting brochures in the Post Office. Looking at them stirred a desire within him to help people and serve his country. From there, his story evolved: “I joined the USAF and then later started my career with the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office,” he explains. “I served 10 years in the U.S. Air Force, and I am in my 14th year with the BCSO. My drive to help people is what pushed me to start my business, Perfection Steamers, five years ago. I’m thankful that through this business, we were able to provide water restoration services during the recent snow storm that impacted the Texarkana area. We also provide COVID-19 sanitation services to organizations and residents through the pandemic.”
An outsider looking in would say that Chris has had great accomplishments during his career at the Sheriff’s Office, whether as a K9 handler, serving as a patrol sergeant and later as a lieutenant, or a member of the SWAT team. However, to him, his greatest accomplishments are when he is randomly approached by individuals who share with him how he affected their lives in a positive way through encounters with them as a police officer. “I especially love it when they share that they are now in church and have given their life to Christ,” he explains. “This transformation for me is a true testament to what I’m really doing in my career.”
Describing his greatest personal achievement comes easy for Chris. He and his wife, Blessing, have one daughter, Destiney, and three sons, Parker, Jeremiah, and Brady. Being a father is high on Chris’ list of priorities, and he is grateful for every little moment he gets to spend with them.
Since helping others just comes naturally to Chris, he enjoys helping nonprofit organizations and has established a Secret Giver Program through his business, Perfection Steamers. This program allows people to nominate needy families, veterans, or widowers who need some assistance.

Best Piece of Advice:
“YOU CAN’T BE SURPRISED WHEN A CIRCUS BREAKS OUT WHEN YOU LEAVE THE CLOWNS IN CHARGE.”
– JOHN CRISP, CHRIS’ BEST FRIEND SINCE CHILDHOOD
Working in banking, specifically lending, is a path that Chris Richards has chosen so he can utilize his enthusiasm for helping customers and businesses with the common goals to help grow and develop the community. “I’ve been in banking a relatively short amount of time, but I have managed to join a great team at Commercial National Bank while working for a great Texarkana family,” he explains. “As a born and raised local, my career path allows me to continue to help our community grow.”
Chris admits that his family is his greatest personal asset. “I have an amazing wife, Lauren, who is a perfect mother to Frannie and Sutton and an absolute asset to our community and state,” he says. “As a felony prosecutor for Bowie County, she works countless hours and still manages to raise two wonderful children. My greatest joy is ending each day with my three favorite people.”
In his spare time, Chris enjoys golfing, although he says that anything his kids enjoy, he will also enjoy. He has personally served on several local nonprofit boards but the two most important to him personally are CASA and the Alzheimer’s Alliance. “My wife being in the profession she is in, we see firsthand the horrible things some children can experience,” he explains. “Helping in any way possible is a must, and CASA is a great organization with great people. My mother, Terrie Arnold, is the executive director of the Alzheimer’s Alliance in Texarkana. Alzheimers is a disease most people don’t fully understand. What it can do to those affected, as well as the family, can be heartbreaking. The Alzheimer’s Alliance allows family members to get the care for their loved ones that is so desperately needed. Helping these two organizations raise money to continue to serve our community is extremely important to me.”

“Marrying my high school sweetheart, Shane, and moving back home to Texarkana to start our family is my greatest personal accomplishment,” Cole Riddell admits. “We were both raised in this town, and I can’t think of a better place to raise our daughter (due in November).”
Graduating from law school with honors and passing the bar exam in Texas and Arkansas is Cole’s greatest professional achievement. As an attorney with Halton & Doan, Cole’s law practice includes a wide range of civil litigation, primarily business and commercial litigation, patent litigation, and trademark litigation throughout state and federal courts in Texas and Arkansas. “From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be an attorney,” he says. “I thoroughly enjoy being an advocate for my clients, in and out of the courtroom.”
Cole is actively involved in the Texarkana Bar as a member of the Texarkana Bar Association and president of the Texarkana Young Lawyers Association. He is a 2019 graduate of Leadership Texarkana and is constantly looking for ways to advocate for Texarkana and embrace the riches that the community has to offer. He was elected as the vice president of the Men’s Golf Association at Northridge Country Club in 2020. He also supports Pleasant Grove Independent School District, Clay’s Golf and Guitars, Texarkana Symphony Orchestra, For the Sake of One, Temple Memorial Pediatric Center, and the Texarkana Children Charities Open. “IN BUSINESS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE SMARTER THAN YOU.”
—BOB
BUNCH, DANA’S LATE GRANDFATHER-IN-LAW
At Cox Exterior Design, a design/landscape construction service, Dana Cox meets with customers to discuss their project hopes, creates a custom design, and carries out the construction process. “My connection with nature and art is why I do what I do,” he acknowledges. “Both have been a constant in my life. They give me joy and strife, so I never get bored due to redundancy. I just try to create harmony between the two and myself.”
Becoming a father and creating a loving family with his wife, Haley, is Dana’s greatest personal achievement. “Our children – Charlie, Tripp, Brooks, and Wyatt – amaze us every day,” he says, proudly. In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors with family and friends near a body of water, traveling, attending concerts, fishing, biking, ATV riding, golfing, and cooking on the grill.
Creating one-of-a-kind projects for his clients gives Dana much satisfaction. He explains that he has had a few projects where the clients have given him 100% of their trust to create something unique and special. “The projects were exciting and pushed me out of my comfort zone,” he admits. “I’m pretty proud of how they turned out.”
Since he has always had an interest in the history of Downtown Texarkana, Dana tries to focus his efforts on the idea of its revitalization. He joined a group of local professionals to help implement the “Courthouse Square” remodel by offering his design services. Since it is near completion, he hopes to be involved with other projects in the future.
When asked where he sees himself in 10 years, Dana jokes that he would love to say “retired and traveling the world with my family.” However, he feels like that won’t be the case so he is thankful that he loves what he does and the people he does it with. “It would be hard to walk away. Hopefully, in 10 years, I can delegate my workload a little to spend more time with my family,” he concludes.

DanielleAnderson,RN
age: 38 | Registered Nurse – Nursing Supervisor | Hospice of Texarkana, Inc.
Best Piece of Advice:
“YOU ARE TOO BLESSED TO BE DEPRESSED.”
– DANNY TAYLOR, DANIELLE’S FATHER
Danielle Anderson is a hospice nurse. In 2009, she heard that Hospice of Texarkana was looking for a PRN RN and decided to check it out. After only three short months working PRN for Hospice, she knew this was where her heart for nursing would remain. During March of 2009 a full-time position became available and Danielle started as a case manager, later becoming an admissions nurse, followed by Hospice aide supervisor, and now a nursing supervisor for the home care staff. “Although my first love is providing hands-on nursing care, I truly love supervising the amazing nurses and aides at Hospice of Texarkana,” she explains. “Each staff member brings something different to my life, and I am blessed to work with the best. They have been a huge support to me throughout trials in my life and are like family to me. Other than supervising the field staff, I also work hard on helping our organizations stay within our benchmarking goals. Most of my day is spent working on nurse schedules, talking with patients and caregivers, triaging calls that come to our office, and reviewing medications, medical equipment, and supplies for each patient. I attend family meetings when needed and also fill in to help with visits and admissions as needed. It is a team effort, and I continue to learn and grow as a Hospice nurse and supervisor each day.”
Working her way from the ground up to becoming a supervisor at Hospice of Texarkana is likely Danielle’s greatest professional accomplishment. She has become well-versed in the Hospice field and is able to have difficult conversations while showing sincere compassion during some of the most difficult times for patients and caregivers. She also has a goal of becoming palliative care certified in the next three years to help broaden her knowledge in Hospice care.
Whether escaping to the Ouachita Mountains, trail riding on side-by-sides, finding new zoos, riding go-carts, or lounging at the river, Danielle and her close-knit family love to take in the beautiful outdoors that Arkansas has to offer. “Although this sounds a bit sappy, my biggest personal accomplishment is being a wife to Josh, mom to Victoria, Jaxon, Olivia, and Jakob, and working a full-time job. I try very hard to keep a work/life balance and ensure that my family knows how high of a priority they are to me, while still striving to be a strong leader at Hospice of Texarkana,” she says, proudly. “Our children are active in sports and extracurricular activities, and I pride myself on being present for every event to show my support to them. In the event that I do have scheduling conflicts that prevent me from attending an event, our extended family including grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, step in to fill the gap. In short, I would say my family knowing they are so loved and supported is my greatest personal accomplishment. And I’m forever grateful to be in a position to have a growing career while still being completely present in my family’s life.”
Name something about you that very few people know: “I share my birthday with my 10-year-old son, Jaxon. We were both born on April 11, and our time of birth is only seven minutes apart. Outgoing and friendly, Esteban Ochoa, also known as E.O., is the owner of SmartPhone EMT and stays busy repairing cell phones, computers, tablets, etc. “I have always enjoyed sales, and I like interacting with people,” he explains. “My love of sales started back in elementary school while selling chocolate bars. I’ve sold Cutco knives door-to-door and worked at RadioShack selling car stereos and cell phones.”
E.O. taught himself how to repair cell phones by working on broken ones brought in to RadioShack. He then decided to open his own cell phone repair store. “The first year required me to stay alone in the back of the store during the week. I only saw my family on the weekends,” he explains. “Now, I have a successful business that allows me to help support my family and allows me to give my coworkers an opportunity to help raise their families.”
Being able to overcome adversity in his life is E.O.’s greatest personal achievement. “I went from not having my mom or my dad around to having my own family,” he says, proudly. “I am so glad that I didn’t end up going down the wrong path in life. This nonprofit gives others in the Texarkana community an opportunity to see if chiropractic care is right for them. Police officers, firefighters, and other first responders are a vital part of our community and have always been important to Holly, so she makes a point to keep her office hours very flexible in order to accommodate hours that are best for these vital service workers.
Traveling and exploring new places are two things that Holly enjoys doing for fun. She is currently planning a trip to Antarctica next year and admits that she is a frequent visitor to Walt Disney World (she used to work there). A physical therapist for eight years, Jenna Sturgeon works primarily in acute care which means she works in the hospital setting. She has spent her entire career with a focus on early mobility in the ICU. She works to mobilize patients who are not only in the ICU, but sometimes on a ventilator as well. “I do this because, in my opinion, it is the most difficult outsetting for a PT to work in. Jenna was the first person in her family to attend college. Earning a doctorate degree in physical therapy is a fete that makes her very proud. Jenna was also instrumental in developing and implementing an early mobility program. “Being able to develop something, watch it come to fruition, and then see it become successful was very rewarding for me,” she says.
Although Jenna and her husband, Frank, were not sure they even wanted kids, three years after they married, “God gave us our answer.” Now, they have a son, Nash, and a daughter, Whitley. “I am so grateful for them!” she exclaims. “I hope to raise them both to be hard workers and to have a servant’s heart.”
Visiting zoos, going to water parks, and hanging out with her children is how Jenna spends her free time. “I used to barrel race for fun, but now that I have kids, I enjoy being with them on my days off and taking them to see new things,” she explains.
In 10 years, Jenna hopes to still be working in the ICU here in Texarkana. “I hope that by then, it’s a standard to walk patients who are on ventilators,” she says. “In my personal life, my kids will then be in their preteens so I hope to enjoy watching them in their hobbies and chauffeuring them around.”

She has always had a strong passion for advocacy and helping people whose voice is silenced to speak up for themselves. “People with disabilities are still largely discriminated against and underrepresented in all facets of life,” she explains. “That just makes me want to keep doing what I am doing and fighting the important fight for those with disabilities to have equal rights, choices, and access.”
Securing an internship on Capitol Hill working for a Congresswoman during her undergrad is Jennifer’s greatest professional accomplishment. That experience showed her how much she loved Washington, D.C., and gave her the courage to move back there a few years later. That experience led to her earning a scholarship to attend The George Washington University to obtain a master’s degree.
Married to Trey, the Lewises have a daughter, Lily, and a son, Wyatt. Settling down and having a family is Jennifer’s greatest personal achievement. “I know that might seem strange to some as an accomplishment, but I was very ‘free-spirited’ until I met my husband,” she admits. “He keeps me grounded and supports me everyday and because of that we have built a beautiful family, and I am so thankful for the personal risks I took to get me here.”
Jennifer is a member and serves on the board of directors for the Kiwanis Club of Texarkana. She also participates in all the activities through the club to help children in our community. She has also served as co-chair for the United Way of Greater Texarkana Stuff the Bus Program the last two years where she helps promote, raise funds, and organize the distribution of backpacks to area schools to help children in need start the school year. “I have a soft spot for helping the children in our community get the resources and support they need and the organizations I volunteer with help aid in that,” she explains.
In 10 years’ time, Jennifer still sees herself working at Texarkana Resources for the Disabled, bringing new programs and resources to help in the community for people with disabilities. She hopes to better educate the Texarkana community about people with disabilities through new channels. She jokes, “Since my kids are only 2 and 4 now, I am sure that in 10 years, I will also be one of the crazy PTA moms, organizing bake sales or something.”

age: 35 | Instructor and Owner of TXK Yoga | Hairstylist at Shear Country
Best Piece of Advice: “EVERYTHING
WILL BE OKAY; IT WILL ALWAYS WORK OUT AS IT SHOULD.”
–PATRICIA LAUNIUS, JESSICA’S GRANDMOTHER
While Jessica Gray loves the connections that she has built while doing hair for the past 13 years, she felt led to branch out so she cut her time back in the salon and bought Texarkana Yoga. Never in a million years did Jessica think that God would lead her to this position, but she is so grateful to be the one to fill the previous owners’ shoes. She explains, “Teaching yoga is not only fun but very rewarding. I love to love, and the studio allows me to do just that. Texarkana Yoga has been special to me, along with many others, for several years.”
Jessica and her husband, Rocky, have been married for 15 years. Together, they have worked hard to create a happy life for their children, Luke (14) and Everleigh (11). They love spending time together as a family. “Laughter is truly the best medicine,” Jessica responds. “Even though I teach yoga, I also enjoy having my own private practice, too. I also enjoy going for a hike, and like most women, I love to shop. Traveling is definitely on the list of things that I enjoy, as well.”
While Jessica loves to support local schools, businesses, and nonprofit organizations with donations for their causes through TXK Yoga, she also has a special place in her heart for those who are homeless. She collects toiletry items and other personal items to donate to the Randy Sams’ Shelter; this winter, she plans to collect coats, blankets, and other items for the shelter.
Since she loves teaching yoga, in the future, Jessica sees herself phasing out of the hair business and focusing all of her attention on the yoga studio.

John “Bass” Deese
age: 28 | Director of Bands | Pleasant Grove ISD
Best Piece of Advice:
“TO BE EARLY IS TO BE ON TIME. TO BE ON TIME IS TO BE LATE.”
– BUDDY DEESE, BASS’S FATHER
During his entire life, Bass Deese has grown up around music educators, as well as other teachers and administrators. His parents have spent the entirety of their careers teaching in the Texarkana area, and their influence grew on him when it came time for him to determine what he wanted to do with his life. “I started playing piano at a very young age, and after I joined Beginner Band in the 6th grade, I eventually aspired to become a band director like my father, Buddy Deese,” he explains. “My job is to give my students the same wonderful experiences in band that I had when I was a student. Our program is designed to give students an opportunity to perform in Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, and various small ensembles.”
Although he has only been teaching for five years, Bass’ greatest professional accomplishment was being offered the position of director of bands at Pleasant Grove. Though this offer presented itself unexpectedly, his all-time career goal was to lead his own band program, and this was an offer he could not refuse.
Marrying the love of his live, Antonia, is one of his greatest personal achievements. She shares the same passion for music as Bass does and also happens to be a coworker of his at PGISD. Being accepted into the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, a 10-time world champion drum corps based out of Allentown, Pennsylvania, is also an accomplishment for Bass. “[Being a part of this drum corps] shaped my love and admiration for the marching arts and helped propel me to finish out my music degree,” he acknowledges.
Bass’ community involvement revolves around (drum roll) ... music. Outside of his professional career, he performs piano for various community groups, weddings, and other public events in the Texarkana area. He also plays piano and trumpet for the Texarkana Jazz Orchestra, and plays trumpet for local churches, such as First Baptist Church Texarkana and First United Methodist Church-Beech Street. With the assistance of the band directing staff at PG, students at the school receive multiple opportunities to perform in the Texarkana area. In the future, Bass’ plans are to continue to influence the lives of band students and help them pursue their passions beyond high school, even if said career choices are not musically-related.

KaseyCoggin, Ed.D.
age: 32 | Allied Health Coordinator | Texarkana College
Best Piece of Advice: “STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF AND ALWAYS TRUST THE PATH.”
— ROBIN HICKERSON, KASEY’S DEAR FRIEND AND MENTOR
Kasey Coggin, Ed.D., has served as a public educator for the last decade. She is passionate about ensuring students are successful. “It is my goal to identify and provide resources needed for each and every student. Previously, in my role as elementary principal, I proudly worked with dedicated teachers and young learners,” she explains. “In my new role in the Community and Business Education Department at Texarkana College, I have the opportunity to work with adult learners and help them begin or continue an opportunity that positively impacts their future. It is so inspirational to see these students have the courage to set sail on a new journey.”
A true labor of love, writing a dissertation from start to finish is Kasey’s greatest professional accomplishment. The process associated with writing a dissertation provides great opportunity for learning, but it also requires an incredible amount of commitment. Kasey is not only grateful for the completion of the doctoral program at Texas A&M University-Texarkana in 2019, but she also hopes it inspires others to chase their dreams. She remarks, “I truly believe everyone is capable of so much more than they realize.”
Kasey is married to Cody, and they have a 3-year-old son, Caylor. Being a mother is high on the list of priorities for Kasey. “As an educator, I have been afforded the opportunity to see the positive impact parental involvement has on a child’s life. I strive to provide the love and attention that Caylor needs, but I definitely make mistakes along the way!” she explains. “I’m also pretty proud of running a Boston qualifying marathon time at the Houston Marathon with my friend, Cylas, in January of 2020 after months of commitment and hard work.”
Serving as the director of Kids Run the Line Too for Partnership for the Pathway allows Kasey to combine her love for running and children into one event. She is also an active member of Women for A&M Texarkana and a recent graduate of Leadership Texarkana. This year, she is looking forward to serving on the Today’s Youth - Tomorrow’s Leaders committee to continue preparing Texarkana youth to lead us to an even brighter future.

age: 30 | Marketing Assistant/IT | Red River Home (includes Ashley Furniture, Four States Furniture and America’s Mattress)
Best Piece of Advice: “EVERY DAY IS A NEW BEGINNING.”
— MARTHA LONG, KATEY’S GRANDMOTHER
“I work in the marketing department for Red River Home including: Ashley Furniture, Four States Furniture, and America’s Mattress,” Katey says. “I manage all of our social media accounts, digital design work and IT, working with each department to ensure their tools in the field are operating efficiently.”
Katey’s greatest professional accomplishment was owning her own business, a dance studio in Fouke, Arkansas. Dancing has been a passion of Katey’s since she was young, and fulfilling such an amazing dream was incredible for her. Through that endeavor, Katey actually found her love of digital marketing which brought her to where she is today.
Being a wife to Greg and mother to two daughters, Aubrey and Olivia, is Katey’s greatest personal achievement. “Being a mother to two beautiful girls makes everything 10 times better,” she admits. Binge watching shows she’s already watched and going out for sushi are fun activities that Katey enjoys doing in her spare time.
Supporting communities, including Texarkana, Sherman, Texas, Paris, Texas, Greenville, Texas, and Hope, Arkansas, is a top priority for Red River Home. “Through Hope to Dream, Ashley HomeStores donates a portion of the mattress sales to Hope to Dream to provide children with a twin mattress, bedframe, bedding and pillow,” Katey explains. “We have also provided in-kind donations for several organizations including: Habitat for Humanity, CASA, Special Olympics, For the Sake of One, and Master Key Ministries, just a name a few.
“I remember just 10 years ago wondering where I would be,” Katey recalls. “Looking back, I have accomplished and overcome so much. I only see thriving from here on out and doing big things in my life. Marketing is such a passion of mine, and I most definitely will be continuing on with this [career] in 10 years.”

age: 20 | Technical Director | Hempstead Hall at UAHT
Best Piece of Advice:
“YOU CAN DO ANYTHING IF YOU HAVE THE WANT TO AND THE WILLINGNESS TO WORK FOR IT.”
— JACK E. DANIELS, KATIE’S FATHER
Katie Daniels is the technical director at a performing arts center in southwest Arkansas. Every day, she ensures that each event is prepped with perfection and carried out with ease to guarantee the best experience possible for Hempstead Hall’s clients. She explains her passion, “From an early age, I developed a passion for the work being done behind-the-scenes to put on concerts and shows. I became very close to many people who worked in those ‘behind-the-scenes’ positions and started following them around asking as many questions as I could think up,” she comments.
“When I was about 14, I started really getting the hang of lighting. Since my dad was the music director for David Phelps, I would assist the head LDs (lighting designers) with their duties on those tours. At 17, I became the head lighting designer on the David Phelps tour and stayed there until I was offered the technical director position at Hempstead Hall in 2020.” Since a lot of work is put in before, during, and after a show, Katie’s desire is for those duties to be done with perfection so that each show is better than the last. If clients and customers are not happy, then she is not happy. Everything she does is to benefit Hempstead Hall and the community, and for clients to leave Hempstead Hall with a bigger smile than the one they had when they arrived.
Katie enjoys being with family and friends, laughing and just enjoying others’ company. Although it might seem cliché, Katie absolutely loves watching films and series and traveling. “Having already visited nearly all 50 states, I intend on now traveling to every country in Europe at some point in the near future!” she explains. “I’m a bit obsessed with fashion and all things clothes and shoes. My aim is to be fashionable, carry a consistent style, and not break the bank while doing so! You will find me in Goodwill and Plato’s Closet on a lot of my days off – and I use my Poshmark app just about daily. Lastly, I am a football fanatic – and not the kind you think. Apparently, it’s called soccer in the U.S., but I’m sticking with football. I watch primarily the English Premier League, but also keep up with most of the European International competitions. My favorite football club is Manchester United with Chelsea FC being my second favorite.”
Even though she has never been much of a book lover or enjoyed reading for pleasure, Katie holds interest in quite a broad number of things. She has a deep connection to writing – stories, poems, screenplays, etc. She enjoys writing and directing short films, and writes her thoughts and memories down in a journal. (She even has a short film currently in the works.) In 10 years, Katie hopes to be a full-time filmmaker, writing and directing feature films that will be entertaining, meaningful, and valued.

I love this channel because not only is it aesthetically pleasing to watch due to professional cinematography, videography, and editing, but BWT gives a detailed but brief history on the place they’re exploring, and it makes it that much more interesting.”

— MIKE COKE, KELLY’S FATHER
Dr. Kelly Coke helps empower community college students in rural Northeast Texas who want to complete their bachelor’s degree or graduate degree by helping remove higher educational barriers they may face. “For my instructional role, I help students discover their leadership skills and help unlock their leadership potential by learning about leadership models and theories,” she explains. “As higher education practitioners in this region of Texas, we have many laborious duties that are pertinent; however, it is all about student success that will ultimately change lives in Northeast Texas.”
Receiving a 12 Under 12 Young Alumni Spotlight Award in 2016 from Texas A&M University Association of Former Students was Kelly’s greatest professional achievement. This award recognizes Aggies who have graduated within the past 12 years for their outstanding accomplishments in business, civic service, and philanthropy, and for representing Texas A&M’s core values of excellence, integrity, loyalty, respect, and self-service. Another very proud time for Kelly was receiving the Texas A&M University System Teaching Award when she first started teaching in higher education.
Kelly stays very active on numerous boards, councils, organizations, and committees. She is currently a board member on the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and the Northeast Texas Communities in Schools. She serves as the education committee chair and an ex-officio member of the board of directors for the Mount Pleasant/Titus County Chamber of Commerce. My job as a realtor is to make the buying and selling process as smooth and easy as possible. I want my clients to know that I’m working to represent their interests, and I truly care for them as individuals.” Kristi doesn’t just treat her job as a business transaction; she builds wonderful relationships and has made some great friends along the way.

Being a wife to Sky and mother to Faith (19), Kenzie (15), Thornton (11), Trent (9), Kolt (7), Josie (6), Rix (1) and Rush (1) is most important to Kristi. She feels like being paid with hugs, kisses, and hearing “I love you” from the ones she loves the most is a huge accomplishment. “If I can help grow and nurture my family to make a difference in society, I’d consider that such a priceless accomplishment,” she explains. “My husband and kids are the bunch that pushes me to be better every day!”
Although being a mother to eight children limits Kristi’s community involvement right now, she knows that her time will come soon enough. Right now, she spends most of her time involved in her kids’ school activities and sports, as well as events at Heritage Church. As her kids’ schedules allow, she hopes to be able to engage in serving regularly in local agencies that help children.
“I’m not sure what God has in store for me, but I can’t wait to see what my kids will be doing in 10 years. Best Piece of Advice: “START EARLY, AND STAY UP LATE!”
—BOBBY DOWD, MARJORIE’S GRANDFATHER
While growing up, Marjorie Slimer always knew she wanted to be a caterer. As the owner of Slice of Slimer, Marjorie caters parties and weddings, and hosts in-house private chef gigs. She explains, “My whole family loves to cook. My business is pretty much family-based! Everyone who works for me is my family, or I consider them family, so it’s fun to be able to spend time together while prepping for events or catering.”
Although she just started catering a few years ago, she is excited about the future. Her plans are to open a storefront, Franklin’s Kitchen + Catering, within the next year. “It is exciting to see how much I’ve progressed and learned over the years,” she says.
Even on her days off, Marjorie can usually be found in the kitchen testing recipes. She enjoys having friends and family over to test her cooking skills. If she is not in the kitchen, she and her boyfriend, Luke Moczygemba, spend time together on the water, boating and fishing.
“I really think my greatest personal achievement is doing what makes me the happiest and knowing what I really want to do,” she explains. “A lot of people think you HAVE to go to college, so I grew up thinking that was my only option. I am proud that I was able to make the decision to leave college (TCU) and go to culinary school.”
Supporting people and organizations in the Texarkana area is important to Marjorie. She always tries to assist farmers in this area by incorporating locally-sourced food into the private dinners she caters. She also works closely with Opportunities, Inc. and looks forward to being a member of the Angel Guild. She serves on the committee for the Alzheimer Alliance’s Twice as Fine Texarkana Wine Festival, helping plan and organize the event. Best Piece of Advice:
“WHEN YOU MESS UP, YOU MUST OWN IT, AND THEN FORGIVE YOURSELF. YOU CANNOT BE USEFUL TO OTHERS WHILE LIVING UNDER THE BURDEN OF PAST MISTAKES.”
— GAYLE MILLER, MARY BETH’S MOTHER
In her role as deputy director at ArkTex Council of Governments (ATCOG), Mary Beth Rudel coordinates with the executive director and program heads to implement federal, state, and local programs that provide vital services to communities in ATCOG’s 10-county region. She supports the executive director in strategic planning for the region and assists with day-to-day agency decisions and operations. “I love that everything our agency does improves the lives of the citizens in our communities in some way. The direct services we provide are public transportation, housing, meals, and home improvements. Our indirect services are providing training to first responders, loans to small businesses, 9-1-1 service to public safety answer points, environmental services, grants for regional development, or planning for disaster mitigation, preparedness, and response,” she explains. “Knowing that I play a role in the success of these programs and services that help so many is very rewarding. The very dedicated ATCOG staff makes these programs and services a true success; therefore, it is very important that I, as a co-leader of ATCOG, work to ensure that staff’s professional needs are met and that employees know the agency supports them. Every day brings new challenges which keeps me on my toes. I enjoy the work I do and find fulfillment in knowing that I am helping others in our agency and our communities.”
One of Mary Beth’s greatest professional accomplishments has been leading in the design and construction of the ATCOG Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The funding for the EOC was provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Emergency Operations Center grant, and the EOC was completed in 2014. The purpose of the EOC is to provide a space for multi-jurisdictional emergency operation coordination for cities and counties in the ATCOG region. For many years, the facility was used for emergency training purposes only. Then, in March 2020, when the COVID pandemic hit our communities, the EOC was utilized for its true intended purpose. Representatives from multiple jurisdictions and agencies worked many long hours inside the EOC coordinating their responses to the pandemic and disseminating information to citizens. Mary Beth is grateful that she had a part in establishing a space that jurisdictions can use for years to come during critical events.
“My greatest personal accomplishment, together with my husband, Dusty, is leading our children, Maggie and Riley, to Christ and being able to witness their decision to follow Him with their lives,” Mary Beth comments. “There’s nothing greater than that!”
Mary Beth serves on the Texarkana Metropolitan Planning Organization Technical Advisory Committee and coordinates with the Texarkana Chamber of Commerce (and other Chambers in the ATCOG region) in planning biennial legislative events in Austin. Assisting with the implementation of various inter-local agreements for services between ATCOG and the City of Texarkana is another way she is privileged in giving back to Texarkana. She is very active at First Baptist Church Queen City as an AWANA Cubbies Director, Assistant Children’s Director, Ladies Ministry Leader, and participant in the Backpack Food Ministry for Children. Through financial donations as well as material donations coordinated through her church, she supports Mission Texarkana and the ShelterKidz Ministry. She also provides personal financial support to the Texas A&M System, which is near and dear to her heart.

A&M-TEXARKANA RECEIVES $75,000
DONATION FROM TEXAR
Texas A&M University-Texarkana recently received a $75,000 contribution from TEXAR Federal Credit Union in support of the university’s scholarship fundraising campaign during its 2021 anniversary celebration. The university is celebrating 50 years as an institution of higher learning, 25 years as a member of The Texas A&M University System, and 10 years of breaking new ground.
Officials from TEXAR and the university were on hand as TEXAR’s Executive Vice President Connie Lee presented the check to A&M-Texarkana President Dr. Emily Cutrer. The check presentation ceremony was held in the lobby of the Building for Academic and Student Services. The lobby, which welcomes students and prospective students alike, will be renamed the TEXAR Welcome Foyer.
“We are so grateful to have the support of community institutions like TEXAR here at Texas A&M University-Texarkana,” said Dr. Cutrer. “Their generous contribution to TEXAR’s Endowed Scholarship will have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of future A&M-Texarkana students. So it seems very fitting that one of the very first places they will see on their journey through higher education is the TEXAR Welcome Foyer.”
“TEXAR recognizes the importance of building strong educational partnerships within our community,” said Connie. “Giving to the Texas A&M University-Texarkana endowed scholarship fund ensures support for today while providing for education excellence far into the future.”

Mikki Curtis works with area secondary schools to provide higher educational opportunities on the UAHT campus for their students while they are still in high school. Her specific programs include the Arkansas High Collegiate Academy and the Texarkana Secondary Career & Technical Education Center. She explains, “The Collegiate Academy is a partnership between UAHT and TASD. Students begin the academy (located on the UA-Texarkana campus) in the 10th grade and can potentially graduate with their high school diploma and Associate of Arts degree simultaneously. The Secondary Career Center provides students in our service area school districts the opportunity to graduate with a certificate of proficiency in CNA, EMT, Information Technology, Welding, and Industrial Maintenance. Both programs are completely free to students and allow them to get a head start on college and/or a career.”

Helping create the Collegiate Academy on both the Hope and Texarkana campuses is one of Mikki’s greatest professional accomplishments. This past year, she watched her first group of seniors walk across the UAHT stage and graduate with their Associate of Arts degrees. “I love what I do because I enjoy helping students get ahead in their education. These programs also allow students the opportunity to have a better future by helping them and their families financially,” she explains. “Being an educator is a great calling, and it is my mission to do what is best for my kids and to show them God’s love.”
Marrying her husband, Casey, is Mikki’s biggest personal achievement. She admits that he is her “biggest cheerleader and encourager.” When she isn’t at work, Mikki can be found traveling, hiking, listening to crime podcasts, antiquing, and spending time with her family, her two dogs (Daisy Mae and Jenny) and cat (Kitty Minaj). She also volunteers at UAHT Foundation events that help raise scholarship money for Texarkana students that attend UAHT.
In the near future, Mikki will be graduating with her PhD in Higher Education and Administration. She plans to continue working in higher education and become a chancellor or vice chancellor of academics.

“YOU WILL ALWAYS MISS 100% OF THE SHOTS YOU DON’T TAKE.”
— WAYNE GRETZY
Since the United Way of Greater Texarkana is a nonprofit orgnization, the biggest part of Molly Riley’s day-today job is fundraising. However, she also loves the marketing aspect of the job, as well. Meeting new people and sharing with them what United Way is all about is something that she is truly passionate about.
The work Molly does through United Way provides her with a lot of opportunities to be involved in the community and work closely with other local nonprofit organizations. She also thoroughly enjoys volunteering during Community Healthcore’s annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot.
Molly’s greatest professional achievement was overcoming her fear of public speaking. “It it hadn’t been for my dad, I don’t think I would be able to do it to this day,” she acknowledges. “He spent many nights practicing my speeches with me during my freshman year of college, preparing for my speech class.” Personally, Molly’s greatest accomplishment was working on Attorney General Greg Abbott’s campaign for Governor of Texas (where he was later voted into office).
When she’s not working, Molly enjoys spending time with her husband, Patrick, and her friends and family. Going to concerts and hearing good music is also a way that Molly enjoys her downtime. In 10 years, Molly sees herself with a family, still working in the nonprofit sector in some fashion, and being more involved with other nonprofit or civic organizations.

Since Collins is employed by the Alzheimer’s Alliance, they enjoy helping out with the Twice as Fine Texarkana Wine Festival, and they have always made it a point to attend Clay’s Golf and Guitars every year.
While growing up, Nick knew the importance of finding someone to call his better half. “Thank the Lord, I can honestly say being married to my best friend, Collins, is my best personal accomplishment,” he admits. “She makes life fun!”
In his spare time, Nick enjoys hunting, fishing, traveling, spending time with friends and family, cooking/grilling, and going to church. He also loves watching sports ... from the local high school level to the Arkansas Razorbacks to the Dallas Cowboys.
Nick concludes, “Lord willing, 10 years from now, I see myself continuing to learn as much as I can about dentistry to better the Texarkana community and helping my wife raise a few children. Oh, and of course, I plan to have a few big deer hanging on the wall.”

Best Piece of Advice: “ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SAY YOUR PRAYERS.”
– DOLORES MUDFORD, NICK’S GRANDMOTHER
Nick Mudford manages a logging company with his two younger siblings. Slam’n Timber Management buys and harvests timber with the hopes of continuing the management of the timber throughout its lifetime.
Nick takes a lot of pride in his job and really focuses on the future management of the timber so that it can benefit the land and the landowner as much as possible.
“I have been on tractors and other heavy equipment long before I ever even had a driver’s license. Hard work was bred into me, and I spent summers and weekends when I was younger as an extra skidder operator or doing odd jobs around the farm,” he describes. “Now I can run every piece of equipment we own, I manage multiple crews, and negotiate timber deals. I recently began buying timber, which is a different aspect within our business. So far, the deals I have made have been profitable for the landowner and for our business which is saying a lot in such fluctuating times in our industry. In the logging community, I have made a name for myself on my timber management abilities. It gives me a lot of pride when someone takes notice and appreciates the work I do.”
Nick and his wife, Shanna, have boy/girl 14-year-old twins, Kye and Kami, and another daughter, Maggie, who is 7 years old. They are proud of their children and have raised them to be God-fearing, kind, respectable, and hardworking.
Singing in front of a crowd is Nick’s greatest personal accomplishment. He explains, “If you would have asked me 15 years ago if I would ever sing in front of a church congregation, I would have laughed at you. Through God, I was able to tackle my fear and now have been honored to be on multiple worship teams and lead a worship team. I thank God for the gift that He gave me, and it feels good to really know I am using it for God’s glory.”
Through his company, Nick has been able to help Habitat for Humanity and the Greater Texarkana Young Professionals with the “Nail A Stud” program, even earning an Honorable Mention for his company in the Stud Muffin Category. He has also been honored to help sponsor Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, a Texarkana area outreach for NICU families. Active in his church’s youth group and worship program, Nick has been the leader of multiple church youth groups in the community and truly finds working with youth in a Christ-centered environment is where his soul feels fulfilled.

Best Piece of Advice:
“SON, CAN’T NEVER COULD, AND WON’T NEVER WILL.”
LEROY JONES, PATRICK’S GRANDFATHER
As an Edward Jones financial advisor, Patrick Dodd works closely with his clients to help guide them toward retirement, college planning, provide estate considerations, or review other goals they want to achieve so that they can enjoy what is most important to them and their family. “I was raised in an environment where finances took a back seat and were stretched paycheck to paycheck. I remember telling myself that when I go to a restaurant, I don’t want to look at the price. I want to order what I want,” he remembers. “During and after college, I was introduced to the financial side of things and realized at an early age how important it was to have a plan. So I made a mission to have my own practice so that I could coach and lead my clients to their vision of financial freedom. I do what I do to help my clients improve their quality of life for them and their family.”
Patrick was the first in his family to graduate from a university with a four-year degree. He worked two-three jobs to pay for college and graduate debt-free while attending college full-time.
Patrick admits that “being a dad is one of the best feelings in the world.” He and his wife, Sarah, have a 3-year-old daughter, Adeline, and a 7-month-old daughter, Ada Blake. Their family enjoys traveling to different places, and Patrick likes to hunt, as well. Currently, Patrick is a member of Greater Texarkana Young Professionals, the Texarkana USA Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Gideons International.
When pondering what he sees himself doing in 10 years, Patrick replies, “That is a good question. I always ask my clients that question, but I never ask myself. In 10 years, my plan is to still be in Texarkana, continuing to build my practice with Edward Jones, while hanging on for dear life to my two little girls because they will be trying to grow up on me.”

Best Piece of Advice: “HARD WORK AND RESPECT TOWARD OTHERS WILL GET YOU FAR.”
– BERNHARD STOCKMANN, TARA’S FATHER
Texarkana Independent School District’s Elementary Region 8 Teacher of the Year Tara Droske loves being a kindergarten teacher at Morriss Elementary. “I truly believe that I am doing what the Lord has called me to do,” she says. “I absolutely love instilling the love of learning into each and every child that enters my classroom.”
Completing her master’s degree, receiving National STEM certification, and being named the Elementary Region 8 Teacher of the Year are three of Tara’s greatest professional accomplishments. She believes that a strong teacher is constantly learning, changing, growing, collaborating, engaging their students, building relationships, and growing leaders. She considers herself a lifelong learner and is always willing to share her knowledge and experience with others.
Marrying her best friend and high school sweetheart, David, and having two children, Claire (7) and William (2), are Tara’s greatest personal achievements. For fun, she enjoys spending time with her family, exercising, being outdoors, and shopping.
Tara serves on the Williams Memorial United Methodist Church school board, participates in local charity runs, mentors new TISD teachers, serves as a cooperating teacher through Texas A&M University-Texarkana, volunteers at many local events including Run The Line and Vacation Bible School, and serves on a number of committees within TISD. Where does she see herself in 10 years? “I definitely see myself in the educational field,” she answers. “I have a long-term goal of working in a role in which I can help teach and prepare new teachers.”

Best Piece of Advice:
“IT DOESN’T TAKE THAT MUCH MORE TIME TO DO IT RIGHT.”
– SAM DICKENS, SR., TREY’S GRANDFATHER
Trey Dickens’ job as an insurance agent with Texas Farm Bureau Insurance includes advising clients on what insurance products best fit their individual needs. “We make sure that there are plans in place to protect them from financial hardships,” he explains. “The best part of my job is getting to know so many different people and their families. Through these relationships, I am better able to advise my clients on their insurance needs as their lifestyles change. Whether because of a new baby, a new home, or just getting married, our insurance needs are constantly changing. I think it is important to be mindful of these changes and have an advisor that knows how to help.”
Being able to protect people close to him with long-term care products and also life insurance is high on Trey’s list of priorities. “I’m in a position where I’m fortunate enough to protect families and their assets,” he says. “A lot of people will never experience the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone protect what matters most; it’s something I take very seriously.”
Trey’s greatest personal accomplishment is marrying his wife, Anna, and starting their family together. They will celebrate their four-year anniversary this month. They have a 2-year-old daughter, Blake, and just welcomed a son, Luke, the newest member to their family, in July.
Trey volunteers his time when and where he can to benefit local charities and schools. He currently volunteers with CASA, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and the Randy Sams’ Shelter.

I also enjoy spending time with our family. I am fortunate that we are all able to get together most weekends.” Although 10 years seems like a lifetime away, Trey looks forward to seeing his children grow up and taking them to their ball games, dance recitals, hunting, and golfing.

TylerRaney, RN
age: 30 | Registered Nurse | CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System
Best Piece of Advice:
“YOU
JUST GOTTA LIVE LIFE, MAN.”
– THE LATE TYLER JOHNSON, TYLER’S CLOSE COLLEGE FRIEND
A registered nurse at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System, Tyler Raney feels like his calling in this life is to help those in need who cannot help themselves. He believes that he has been given the ability to help people when they are in the darkest time of their lives. “If I can provide even an ounce of hope, for even one person, I have done what is expected of me,” he explains. “I love what I do because at the end of the day, if I am able to make somebody better, happy, or whatever the case may be, then I can go home happy as well.”
Tyler’s greatest professional accomplishment to-date is being promoted to part-time supervisor within six months of his nursing career. “It was an unexpected development in my career, and I will forever be grateful for that opportunity,” he says. “I plan on using that experience to assist in my career advancement and to help me reach my personal goals.”
Making it through nursing school after he had already obtained a bachelor’s degree in another field from Texas A&M University was Tyler’s greatest personal achievement. He felt as though he was not using his full potential as a person in his prior field of work and admits that having to start over took dedication.
Playing golf and “a little cornhole” occasionally, hunting and fishing with his father, and taking his dog, Milo, to Bringle Lake are some of the things Tyler enjoys doing for fun.
Tyler feels that as a nurse, he gives back to the community every day he is at work. “The vast majority of the people I interact with on a daily basis are from Texarkana, and I do my very best to assist them in any way they need me to. I am also very active in community events and openings. I do my best to support local businesses every time I have the opportunity to and help advertise events and new businesses opening whenever I get the chance to,” he explains. “I also umpire Little League baseball games on occasion.”
In the future, Tyler sees himself advancing in his career, possibly becoming a Nurse Practitioner or working his way into a management role, and having a family of his own. He concludes, “The main goal for me is to better myself each and every day and do what I can to better those around me as well.”

VashilFernandez
age: 29 | Planning and Community Development | City of Texarkana, Texas
Vashil Fernandez grew up in Jamaica in a small house with a lot of people. In doing so, he noticed the condition of the community and its resources and always felt the urge to help change it. Working in Planning and Community Development has given him the opportunity to accomplish that dream/desire and to learn so much that he can one day implement or suggest to his community back in Jamaica.
Best Piece of Advice:
“TREAT
EVERYONE WITH RESPECT.”
— MISS GREEN, VASHIL’S GRANDMOTHER
Receiving his first professional basketball contract with the Miami Heat in September of 2016 was one of Vashil’s greatest professional accomplishments. A close second to that achievement was when he was promoted to be the interim Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Texarkana, Texas.
Married for over six years to a “strong, brave, patient, caring, God-centered woman,” Vashil and Bridget, a teacher at PG Intermediate School, have three beautiful daughters, Maia, Olivia, and Kadence. When he is not at work, he can usually be found hanging out with his family, cooking/baking, or playing/ coaching basketball or other games.
“The day I gave my life to Jesus and made the choice to truly follow His word was my greatest personal achievement,” Vashil admits. “I was almost 18 years old and had been baptized three years prior to that but nothing changed. But at almost 18, I had a skin problem, and the love of the people in the church really helped me through it all. I could see God’s love for me through those people and that inspired me to seek and offer that love to others.”
Vashil is the first and only person in his entire family to graduate college, and he is trying to change that outcome for his younger siblings and other relatives. He serves on various boards and committees in Texarkana, including the Salvation Army board and the Metropolitan Planning Organization Technical Committee. He is a member of Greater Texarkana Young Professionals (GTYP) and is the president/chair of the Texarkana Homeless Coalition.
In the next three years, Vashil sees himself continuing to help revitalize the downtown area, while supporting the development of revitalized neighborhoods in Texarkana, Texas. Three years from that, he sees himself contributing to the overall growth of Texarkana, decreasing the income disparity, decreasing homelessness, increasing growth in new and existing businesses, and improved infrastructure. Beyond that, he will follow wherever God leads.

A Pinch of Salt
by Donnie Spriggs
All of you hardworking parents can now take a small breather. The kids are getting back in their back-to-school grooves, and the only thing that should be an argument in the house is homework. And I’m about to give you the pickiest eater’s favorite dish. (I am not a picky eater, I just feed a lot of them.) I know the less stressful the better for y’all, because nobody likes a long-drawn-out meal for a large family.
Cheeseburger cups are one of the easiest meals to make and something you can throw together on the fly. whether you are headed to a dance practice or football practice, the kids can eat them on the go. This recipe can also be used for breakfast food as well with just a few different ingredients.
INGREDIENTS
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
11/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tube refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
1/2 cup cubed Velveeta
DIRECTIONS
In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Remove from the heat; set aside.
Press each biscuit on the bottom and up the sides of a greased muffin cup. Spoon beef mixture into cups; top with cheese cubes. Bake at 400° for 14-16 minutes or until golden brown.
Ketchup and mustard are optional and can be just added to the top if you’d like, but I wouldn’t suggest it unless you are at home.
You can either serve this with bagged chips or throw some fries in the air fryer while this is cooking. You can also do the same thing by adding breakfast sausage to this and leaving off the sauces if you have extra biscuits.

Exquisite INTERIORS
IMMACULATE. MODERN. SPACIOUS.
by SUZY TURNER photos by KIM MCMURRY
When driving down Pleasant Grove Road, you can’t help but notice this distinctive blue, cedar-trimmed two-story modern farmhouse sitting in the middle of 23 beautiful, pristine acres. Owners, Kelly and Shane Kelley began building this immaculate 4 bedroom, 5 bath beauty in September 2018 and completed the construction process in May 2019. From contract to construction, their main goal was to keep their family in mind while making every decision, whether big or small.
A beautiful ornamental wrought iron gate with a K monogram greets visitors as they turn into the driveway. A creative metal fabricator, Shane hand-forged the ironwork seen on the front porch, as well as the iron balusters on the stairwell inside the home. Natural wooden columns and shutters add a rustic feel to the otherwise modern exterior of the home.
A mix of older and newer furniture adds warmth and flair throughout the sleek home. Farmhouse-inspired accents and unique light fixtures from Logan Electric blend seamlessly in the common areas. Vinyl plank floors provide durability and sustainability, accenting the earthtone color palette used throughout the home. Wooden accent walls and ceilings by William Tate are eye-catching and strategically placed in many areas of the home. Shane’s aunt, Regina Burns, who passed away in 2020, decorated the home as part of her therapy while she was going through cancer treatments. Her knack for design gives the Kelleys much solace as they look around their home and see her personal touches everywhere.
Guests are welcomed into the house by neutral tones and colorful accents in the foyer. The stairwell features a beautiful mix of iron and wood leading up to the second floor. At the top of the stairs sits a landing that overlooks the living room. Three bedrooms are situated
upstairs, as well as a bonus room that serves as a hangout for the Kelleys’ children, Kaylee and Tyler, and their friends.
Although he is grown and has moved out of the house, Tyler still has his own space to come back to when he is visiting family. Navy and white striped bedding in his room brightens up the otherwise neutral palette. Ducks Unlimited prints that Kelly’s brother passed down to him are strategically placed on the wooden accent wall above the bed.
In Kaylee’s room, the beige quilted comforter exudes femininity and serenity while the white distressed furniture from Four States Furniture adds light against the dark wood wall. When asked what she prefers when decorating, Kaylee admits that she likes the “minimalistic approach.” A functional desk is situated in a nook below a window which adds the perfect natural light.
A contemporary guest room features a colorful quilt, made by Kelly’s grandmother, draped across the foot of the bed. Black, red, and white accents are carried throughout the room, while a pillow on the bed says, “Be Our Guest.” The black metal bed adds a modern flair, while the quilt adds a vintage touch.
Leather furniture in warm natural tones is situated throughout the bonus room, offering the perfect view of the flatscreen TV. Whether watching movies, or playing games, guests can hide out in this room to get comfortable and cozy. The natural wood ceiling offers a dramatic presence against the light walls.
Downstairs, natural light from large windows invades the living area from many angles. Metal windmill ceiling fans create a gentle circulation of air while the family gathers to watch TV. The floor-to-ceiling stone
70 SEPTEMBER 2021 fourstatesliving.com
fireplace serves as the focal point in the room while family mementoes add a nostalgic flair.
Bronze pendant lights hang over the massive quartz kitchen island, adding storage and seating space to the area. A commercialstyle gas range makes cooking easy while stainless appliances provide a sleek contrast to the white cabinets and countertops. A pot filler is situated behind the range while the gray glass-tiled backsplash adds a contemporary look.
A unique bronze sphere chandelier hangs over the table in the formal dining room. A black and white buffalo check table runner adds a chic vibe to the space. Candles and greenery accents serve as the centerpiece around the table that sits six.
The contemporary master suite exudes comfort and relaxation. A sign above the bed reads, “You will forever be my always.” Black, gray, and white bedding lends a touch of sophistication while light streams inside through the windows. Barn doors lead into the spacious spainspired bathroom. His and hers vanities provide adequate room for both Kelly and Shane to prepare for their work day. A soaking tub offers the perfect relaxing bath while a built-in bench and rain shower head complete the walk-in shower retreat. Behind the barn doors, clothes are
organized and tidy in both of the walk-in closets. A safe room, located off the master bath, provides a place of protection for the Kelleys in case of significant storms.
Just a few steps from the master bedroom and the living room is Kelly’s favorite thing about her home: the back patio, also known as the outdoor oasis. The covered patio features an outdoor fireplace, as well as a well-equipped outdoor kitchen and grill. Exposed beams add to the rustic feel while comfortable seating allows the family to gather at day’s end or while entertaining guests.
Shane’s favorite thing about the house is unmistakably the man cave. Located just a few steps away, adjacent to the home, the cedar-planked room offers a bar area, leather seating, and a place for friends to gather for a night of fun. The family’s crest, designed by Kelly’s brother, is inlaid into the concrete floor, next to the bar, adding character to the space.
The Kelleys’ appealing farmhouse is personalized to suit their wants and needs. With modern design, minimalistic décor, and natural rustic elements, Kelly and Shane have embraced traditions while surrounding themselves with contemporary touches that make their home a place where laughter is heard and smiles are seen by all who visit.

THE ROAD Tra veled less
BY NICHOLE HOLZE
What’s the most unique place you’ve ever slept? Our answer is without a doubt: the camping platform on the Little Maumelle River.
In the last few years, the nonprofit, Arkansas Water Trails Partnership, has partnered with public lands to create trail systems that weave their way through various waterways in Arkansas. A water trail is a GPS marked trail that moves through a body of water. There are currently seven trails throughout Arkansas. The trail on the Little Maumelle River in Little Rock is especially unique for several reasons, but one stands out the most: it is home to the only water-based camping platform in the state.
It’s not just a platform elevated above the wetland ground; it’s actually on the water! The camping platform floats between cypress trees, secured by a special system of poles that allow the platform to freely lift or drop with the changing water levels. It is imperative that you use the reservation form on the Arkansas Water Trails website to secure your reservation, for a $25 per night fee. There is no fee to use the platform for a picnic lunch or dinner.
My children and I loaded our canoe and pushed off from a boat ramp in the William Kirsch Preserve near the river. We packed everything we needed for the night into our waterproof bag, a cooler, and a backpack. It’s also important to bring a five gallon bucket with a garbage bag. It’s a pack it in and pack it out site, and there’s no bathroom on the platform. So, yes, indeed, you need to pack it all out. Fires are not allowed on the platform; however, small camp stoves are fine. There are also attachment points for hanging three hammocks. For our trip, I brought our two-man backpacking tent for my daughter and me and our hammock for my son.
The route to the camping platform is half the fun, and we took our time as we spotted turtles, frogs, herons, fish, and many other types of birds. That night we enjoyed spotting the Pileated Woodpeckers that lived somewhere near the platform and heard the call of an owl deep in the night. The fall, winter, and spring are the best seasons to camp on the platform, to avoid the onslaught of summer heat and bugs. The memories we made on that adventure will last me a lifetime, and my son said it was one of his favorite trips. He said he will never forget falling asleep to the hammock swaying on the platform, moonlight filtering down from the towering trees, and that owl call singing him to sleep.
