The PSAT, SAT, ACT and California Smarter Balanced standardized tests were analyzed and compared as predictors of college persistence. Results from MANOVA did not indicate significant differences between the tests in question. Results from MLR detected significance only between ACT ELA score and college persistence and between SAT math score and college persistence. Based on findings an argument was made for gleaning from, but replacing, the college admission tests with an improved version of the California Smarter Balanced as single new assessment better designed to measure and predict students’ future career success, whether via college or vocational school attendance. This simultaneous streamlining and realignment action serves to avoid the unhealthy overtesting of students, substantially save costs, and minimize instructional disruption while collecting the objective data needed for tracking state and national progress toward a better educated workforce.
