2023 in Review

2023 at FCA

has been full of exciting things. The year was filled with inspirational chapels, friendships made and strengthened, and students being challenged to new heights.

(A) FCA had its big accreditation visit and came out with flying colors! The visiting team said, “FCA is an amazing school. What is provided for students and families here is powerful.” FCA received a 5-year accreditation renewal from the National Christian School Association, Cognia, (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools), and the Kentucky Non-Public Schools Commission.

(B) Tina Hall, FCA’s own chef, was recognized as WBKO’s Hometown Hero.

(C) Our beloved Fred Brashear, retired to Georgia after serving FCA for 20 years.

(D) Our three BETA clubs all competed successfully at the state conventions, with some qualifying for nationals.

(E) Tyler and Ben Hansbrough, former NBA players, visited Mr. Bush’s class to talk about honesty and respect for authority, working hard to meet goals, and their experiences in the NBA. Ben and Tyler were gracious to answer the students' questions and share their stories.

Students of all ages brought in canned goods to support our canned food drive. Local Chick-fil-A Manager, Blake Stewart, spoke to staff members about how his team strives to go the extra mile with their customers. The Senior Class completed their Day of Service project by helping out members of the community. The Sojourners traveled from all over the United States to volunteer their time for two weeks at FCA. The middle school was thrilled to have Kyle Butt from Apologetics Press visit FCA to talk with the students about Christian evidences.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

In the Sermon on the Mount,

Jesus taught the principle of going the extra mile in Matthew 5:41. Our staff and students have witnessed and experienced the freedom and joy that comes from doing more than is expected.

In June, the Sojourners traveled from different states to Bowling Green to volunteer for two weeks at FCA. They demonstrated second-mile service as they cheerfully went about the campus painting, building playground equipment, remodeling the portable, and pressure washing.

As the full staff started back in August to prepare for the students, they heard several in-service sessions on 2M2N, or Second Mile, Second Nature.

Blake Stewart, one of the managers from the Nashville Road Chick-fil-A, spent some time talking with our staff about how they seek to go the extra mile with their customers. Afterward, our staff discussed how we can better serve our “customers” at FCA.

The FCA students have also demonstrated going the extra mile. There has been a renewed interest in encouraging other students in prayer and in chapel. Our older students enjoy worshipping with our younger students in chapel.

Our sixth graders raised funds to bring their favorite speaker, Kyle Butt, from Apologetics Press to speak a whole day on Christian evidences.

Our seniors even participated in a service day and raked leaves for some of the FCA family. Throughout all of these things, we pray that we are becoming more like Jesus in going the extra mile.

Elementary School

As we lay many foundations of learning in elementary school, our students explore grand possibilities as we help them find their unique talents and lead them to fulfill their dreams. Students are thriving whether they are on a field trip to ride the Santa train in Bardstown, learning in Frankfort about our state capital, dissecting a squid at the Aquarium, utilizing the outdoor classroom under the pavilion, or simply within the 4 walls of their classroom!

Throughout the year, we have welcomed many famous “characters” into our classrooms, including Paul Revere and Deborah Sampson, Sacagawea, Abe, and Mary Todd Lincoln at our Wax Museum. We created electricity and caused friction, grew plants, and created ecosystems at our Science Fair.

The unique part of our school day is that we interweave Biblical principles into every subject and begin the day with Bible lessons, character building, and celebrating each other. A successful day ends by answering a joyful YES to these two questions: “Did I get a little smarter today?” and “Did I grow a little closer to God today?”

Jesus tells a parable about the wise man that built his house on the rock – a firm foundation that kept his house safe during the rain, floods, and winds that tried to shake it. The mission at FCA is to help in building that type of foundation for our students – a foundation that will withstand the rain, floods, and winds that come in the world today. We begin the process of building that foundation as early as preschool where students are immersed in not only the study of social and educational skills that will help them grow, but also in Biblical knowledge and principles that will lead them closer to God. The foundation of our preschool family here at FCA is kindness. Our teachers focus on kindness every day in their classrooms, leading by example as they interact with their students and collaborate with their coworkers. This cornerstone of our preschool program has helped us to lay the groundwork for many other lessons that are taught within our walls.

2023 was an exciting year for preschool.

We adjusted our classrooms and added a K3 class, so we now have four K3 classrooms and four K4 classrooms, bringing our total number of students in preschool to 104. Our smallest Falcons participated in a number of FCA activities throughout the school year. They were instrumental in helping us meet our fundraising goals by participating in selling Smart Cards and raising money for the Harvest Run. Preschool students dressed up and engaged in Homecoming activities and filled the stands at volleyball games, soccer matches, and basketball games. They love supporting the “big kids” and cheering for the blue & gold every chance they get. We even had a record number of preschool families decide to continue their education at FCA by enrolling in kindergarten. 86% of the current kindergarten class attended our 2023 preschool program! The foundation that we are building in preschool will serve our students well as they continue to learn, grow, and soar as the Falcons of our future!

Future Facilities Plan

As our board and administration have continued to further a master plan for the future of FCA, we have focused on the rest of the campus layout when the Falcon’s Nest is completed in the summer of 2025. The elementary building at the front of campus will take on a different feel when the preschool moves out to the Falcon’s Nest. The entire kindergarten through the 5th grade will fit in the front hallway. In the four classrooms where the 2nd and 3rd grades are currently located, there will be our specials classrooms; music, art, Spanish, and the library. The middle school classrooms will then be located in the hallway where the 4th and 5th grades currently reside.

Additionally, two other locations will look different. The temporary walls in the cafeteria will be removed, the kitchen expanded, and the cafeteria will then be opened back up to better accommodate the kindergarten through the 12th grades to eat lunch. Since the preschool will be eating in their building, there will be more room for K-12 than ever before. Also, the portable will be temporarily transformed into a giant band and chorus room by removing the center wall. The Upper School teachers will once again be able to enjoy a teacher’s copy and workroom since the guidance counselor and assistant principal will occupy the offices in what is currently the president’s office and financial office. These changes will allow K-12 to comfortably fit in the two buildings with no classes in the cafeteria or on the stage of the gym.

After the Falcon’s Nest is constructed, plans are to build an Activity Center that will house a second gym, weight room, additional locker rooms, band room, chorus room, performance stage for all fine arts, and an art room, as well as a concession stand and bathrooms for our outdoor sports. Additional campus improvements include soccer dugouts (coming in 2024), a maintenance/storage building (coming in 2024), a baseball field, a softball field, potential tennis courts, and another classroom building that will eventually connect the elementary buildings to the Upper School.

The Falcon’s Nest

After our board and administration worked on the master plan, some adjustments were made to the Falcon’s Nest layout. Previously, the side wing was going to be used temporarily by the Upper School. However, since the master plan is to build the Activity Center next, and more of the middle school will be in the building constructed last year, the decision was made to have a more permanent use of the side wing of the Falcon’s Nest. As the layout shows, this side wing will become an administrative wing. This wing will have offices for the Director of Admissions, Financial Manager, President, Executive Assistant, and Development Director. The wing will also house a board conference room that will also be used for teacher training and other functions. A storage room for the preschool and administration will be in that area as well.

Someone once said,

happily anticipating. Big things are coming for preschool, and the administration and staff are giddy with excitement. There are so many features of the new building to look forward to that it’s hard to narrow it down to just a few. Our excitement grows with each passing day, every new set of drawings, every discussion of materials, and every planning session!

As a member of our administrative team, I cannot wait to see how this space will not only maximize the educational experience of our preschool students but how it will also impact the FCA campus and the student body as a whole. Several things will get better with the new building: shorter wait times for drop off/pick up, additional parking for events, and space for elementary and middle school classes.

The FCA Family

has supported the fundraisers in 2023 in an amazing

way! The year started with a golf tournament held on April 29th at the Crosswinds Golf Course. Even though it was drizzling most of the day, we had a record number of golfers and teams. In total, the golf tournament raised $49,587! FCA was especially appreciative of our 2023 Title Sponsor, Hill-Motley Lumber Company, for underwriting the event.

The 2023-24 school year started with our students selling Smart Cards and raising money for the Harvest Run. This year we hit a new high with sales of $21,967 in Smart Cards. While our goal was aggressive for the Harvest Run, the students exceeded our goal raising $58,178 this year.

As always, the highlight event of the FCA community is the Chili Supper and Auction. Traditionally held in November, this year’s event had around 500 attendees. After the ticket sales, table sponsors, silent auction, live auction, and special appeal, this year’s total eclipsed past results by raising an amazing amount of $251,898! FCA would like to thank every single person who helped us reach each of these goals to make the Falcon’s Nest possible and FCA a better place!

Athletics

FCA athletics is

just one piece of the puzzle that helps make Foundation Christian Academy the great school that it is. FCA’s Varsity Soccer Team completed its first season on the field in the fall and secured the first varsity win in our program's history. Our Volleyball team continues to improve and had the most victories in a season to date. Middle school soccer and volleyball athletes showed great improvement in their skill and abilities in competition, and we look forward to seeing them in future years compete as a Falcon. The Cross Country team is poised for success in the near future as several elementary runners will transition to middle school

The Falcon Cheerleaders helped create a great atmosphere inside Ray Gymnasium this winter. The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team won more games this season than any previous teams at FCA. Archery continues to be the largest sport by number at FCA with over 60 students participating. Earl the Fighting Falcon is a crowd favorite when he makes his appearances.

Josi Slavey & Kaito Muto make history as they become the first to sign athletic letters of intent. Josi Slavey will be playing volleyball at Florida College. Kaito Muto will be playing baseball at Vanderbilt University. We are excited to see what the future holds for these two and those who will follow in their footsteps.

Fine Arts

FCA is blessed

to have an amazing Fine Arts Department! Students at all grade levels can participate in programs throughout the year. Upper School produced its 2nd musical in the Spring of 2023 with the show Annie.

Chorus students from several grades were selected to participate in the KY ACDA Honors Choir at EKU in the fall of 2023. In addition, students Caleb Reagan, Michael Reagan, and Ian Martin were selected to participate in the 2024 KMEA All State Chorus. Students in grades 4-12 can participate in band class everyday and have access to join the chorus. FCA participated for the first time as a marching band in the Bowling Green Jaycees Christmas Parade in December of 2023. 9th grader Juliette Berry won the Music Teachers National Association Jr. Division Competition in piano, preparing and memorizing six pieces of music.

Foundation Christian Academy is blessed with many talented students, and through our Fine Arts Department, our students have the opportunity to shine.

LEAVE a Lasting Legacy at FCA

Foundation Christian Academy exists

because of the love of Christians for youth and their Christian education. Many generous and unselfish donors have provided one of the best accredited elementary and high schools. Academically qualified Christian teachers provide an education that emphasizes academic excellence and Christian character. The FCA Board, President, and Administration deeply appreciate our many donors. Some have remembered FCA in a special way. These gifts have made a difference now and in the future. The recent Bill Page Estate gift of $279,000 will be very helpful in the construction of the new preschool building, which will soon be under construction. Perhaps including FCA in your will is something you would also like to do. Please contact FCA for more details.

The University Heights congregation donation of $100,000 from the sale of their building and property will benefit students annually. It was added to the endowment, and the interest/dividends will provide financial aid for needy students. Two additional endowed scholarships have also been added that honored and memorialized loved ones. The Brenda Fay Gilbert Sunshine Memorial Scholarship and the Grant Cline Family Scholarship are fully endowed and will help needy students annually. FCA’s donors have partnered with the Board to create a wonderful Christian environment for students to obtain the best possible education. There are many ways to donate to have the joy and satisfaction of helping youth have a quality Christian education. Please remember the work of FCA and especially the students in your prayers and giving.
