Happy New Year and wishing you a happy, healthy 2022. It seems unbelievable we are now nearly 2 years since the pandemic began and whilst we were so pleased to get lots of customers away on holidays and cruises in 2021 we know many more have faced cancellation after cancellation and have not been able to get away with us during this time. Travel is such an enriching experience for all and I know that so many people are eager to travel in 2022 with the hope that, with the new booster vaccine roll out and new Omicron variant giving milder symptoms, we are getting to a stage where the restrictions on our lives will lessen to allow us to enjoy all the things we enjoyed pre-pandemic including holidays and cruises fully once more.

During the pandemic, as a business, we have worked hard to act in the right way by our staff and our customers. We, like all travel businesses, were deeply impacted by the cancellations of so many holidays and the strain on cash flow this created.

We continued to operate covering all shops and phone lines even in full lock downs and we have even continued to look at growth opportunities over this time with two acquisitions and two brand new shops opening up since 2020. We are committed to recovering and building back stronger and this will all be centred around continuing to deliver the service & expertise which has won us many awards and accolades. With our staff and our fantastic customers I know the best years for travel and our business are yet to come.

While physically they are slightly larger, they carry around the same number of guests as Balmoral, meaning we can continue to offer the same attention to detail and personal service for which we are so well known.

They also allow us to offer a number of new facilities to our guests, such as all-weather pools with retractable roofs (so you can relax by the pool wherever in the world you are), thermal suites in our spas and a new venue, The Auditorium, where we can offer live culinary demonstrations.

Are you allowed to tell us what your favourite feature of the new ships is?

This is a really difficult question, because there

really are so many things to choose from. If pushed, I think it would have to be our new specialty dining restaurant Colours & Tastes, where we serve delicious Asian Fusion cuisine. Here you can find dishes such as spiced grilled meats, seafood, gyozas, dim sum and sushi, as well as the classic Chinese and Thai favourites. We also have Vasco, another new specialty dining option, offering modern Indian food, cooked fresh to authentic recipes by our Goan chefs on board.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines have some incredible itineraries planned, and have won awards for their itineraries. What makes Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines itineraries slightly different?

We have a fantastic team of Journey Planners here, and every year they start with a clean slate to hand-craft our cruises. We don’t just sail from A to B – there is so much thought that goes into each of our sailings.

Whether it’s making sure we are visiting at the best

This is something that’s replicated ashore too, and we work really closely with our shore tour providers to make sure we are offering authentic experiences in the destinations that we visit. In St Petersburg, for example, we don’t just take guests to the ballet, but also offer them the chance to meet with one of the performers to learn more about them personally. It’s these types of opportunities that make our experiences ashore extra special.

How have Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines adapted to current changes?

As an industry, we have all had to make changes.

When we resumed sailing we made a promise to our guests that we would be reactive to any updates or changes in any of the destinations that our cruises are due to visit, and would change our itineraries if we needed to. We have also introduced social bubbles on board. We know that for some, meeting new people is such a big part of the cruise experience, and so this allows our guests to still make new friends, while keeping them together in small bubbles of six people during their cruise.

Can you tell us a bit about your Travel Ready Service?

We launched our new Travel Ready Service just before Christmas, to help add that extra bit of reassurance that we have got everything covered should any requirements change. We will arrange all of the paperwork, including Passenger Locator Forms and NHS vaccination letters, and order any tests that may be required, with the cost dependent on the types of tests that are required at the time.

For any first-time cruisers or customers that are new to Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, can you tell them what they can expect from Fred.

Olsen Cruise Lines?

There is a real trend at the minute about things being bigger and better. For us, we are really proud of our smaller ships and the experiences they allow us to offer our guests. With them, we can dock closer to the heart of so many destinations, such as Seville, where exploring can begin right at the end of the gangway. We can sail sizerestricted waterways into the heart of the Norwegian Fjords, and offer a personal service on board. Sailing with fewer guests means our crew can remember your name, how you like your breakfast and your favourite tipple. For us, smaller is better, and that’s what really sets us apart.

What can customers expect from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2022?

We have got some really exciting cruises in 2022. In April, Borealis will follow the natural migration of whales from the Azores to their summer breeding grounds in Iceland. In this one cruise, guests will see a real contrast in climates, with marine wildlife charity ORCA on board to help with wildlife spotting from deck and to collect vital research on whale populations.

We are also starting to venture further afield again, and Borealis will head to Canada in time to see the beautiful autumnal foliage.

Our heritage stems from Norway, and we have cruises visiting this fantastic part of the world in all seasons, from sailings to seek out the Northern Lights, to summertime fjord cruising.

Yes, I’m proud of how our CLIA member cruise lines came together in a non-competitive way and have been working closely over the past months to ensure a safe return to sailing.

Royal Caribbean Group worked together with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings to form the Healthy Sail Panel, a panel of world-leading epidemiological experts who have been working with the companies to provide a set of recommendations to ensure a safe return to operation.

These recommendations were open-source and were used by CLIA to ensure all cruise lines met an industry standard. This helped inform international government bodies of our safety measures.

What health and safety protocols have been introduced?

An Interview with Ben Bouldin Vice President EMEA, Royal Caribbean International and CLIA chair, UK & Ireland It’s great news that more and more ships are back in the waters and congratulations on your appointment. Can you explain a bit about your role within CLIA? Thank you! Having been part of the CLIA executive committee for the past two years, I’m delighted to now have the opportunity to take on the role of chairman for CLIA UK & Ireland.

It’s been an undeniably difficult time for our industry, so it’s particularly important for the cruise lines to work together, especially when working towards our return to service.

CLIA provides a coordinated forum for our industry to align with one another and to collaborate towards common goals. I’m delighted to be taking on this role as we work together at this important time.

The cruise lines have been working together in combined efforts to return to the sea safely. Can you let us know what’s been happening?

CLIA members have resumed sailing following stringent safety measures which are continuously being monitored and evaluated in line with the current climate and specific international government requirements. Some of the protocols include 100% testing of all guests and crew, physical distancing, ventilation and medical capability.

How are cruise lines adjusting and adapting to these changes?

CLIA provides stewardship in this area and the complexity of requirements varies depending on the destinations that ships visit. In spite of this, the cruise industry is incredibly resilient and cruise lines have been operating safely, while still delivering excellent holidays to guests.

How are cruise lines continuing to drive the industry forward?

While it’s not always plain sailing, we are all remaining positive and the high prevalence of vaccines and boosters in the UK will enable us to continue to operate safely.

Most importantly, the cruise lines know just how much their guests can’t wait for more incredible holidays and will continue to work hard to deliver these holidays safely.

What can we expect from the cruise industry in 2022?

By the end of May, all CLIA members’ ships will be back in service, setting the industry up for a good summer. There are some incredibly exciting plans in place across the industry, with new ships, destinations and commercial plans.

I’m taking on this role at a time of much growth and opportunity, in fact, there is more cruising capacity in 2022 than there was in 2019. 16 new ocean ships will launch in 2022 and 10 new river cruise vessels.

What advice would you give customers looking to book their next cruise?

Cruising remains an excellent way to holiday and is one of the safest ways to travel.

Cruise lines are also working together on sustainability projects. Are you able to share any information?

Yes, we are working on a sustainability agenda and programme that is a vital part of our future too. CLIA cruise lines made a global fleet-wide commitment in December 2018 to reduce the rate of carbon emissions by 40% by 2030, compared to 2008 levels.

Carbon neutrality is no longer a choice, but a necessity.

When it comes to sustainability, we are held accountable as an industry as a whole. In addition to curbing emissions, countless work is being done in the face of many of the industry’s challenges.

One example is Mass Tourism: With increased demand and growth in the cruise industry comes the responsibility to foster respect and cooperation with the places we visit.

In collaboration with local communities, the cruise industry is exploring new and creative ways to manage the flow of visitors and implement the highest standards of responsible tourism, including: • Partnerships with local governments • Staggered arrivals and departures • Excursion diversification • Shoreside power • Local passenger spending When it comes to partnering with local governments, I am consistently impressed by the humanitarian efforts of the industry – whether it’s working with Palma in the Canaries to support their tourism efforts following the volcano, or delivering fresh food, water supplies and even shelter to those who have suffered natural disasters.

As an industry, we are a large force and when we collaborate through CLIA, we can do a lot of good.

What has been happening with Royal Caribbean in 2021?

More than half a million guests safely cruised on a Royal Caribbean ship during 2021, 21 Royal Caribbean cruise ships are now back in service, we have sailed from 16 different homeports and our ships have visited 50 ports of call. So, a lot has been going on! Returning our ships to sailing has been a big task, but we are delivering excellent holidays once again.

We also launched a new ship this year, Odyssey of the Seas, which will be coming to Europe next summer and sailing from Rome.

What can guests expect on a Royal Caribbean cruise?

At Royal Caribbean, we have been delivering innovation at sea for more than 50 years.

Each successive class of ships is an architectural marvel featuring the latest technology and guest experiences for today's adventurous holidaymaker. We’re all about celebrating the modern family and our holidays are the perfect opportunity for guests of all ages, stages and personalities.

Royal Caribbean have some incredible innovative features onboard – which one is your favourite?

It’s incredibly hard to pick one, but probably our entertainment venues, particularly the Aqua Theater and Two70. Our entertainment overall is second to none and so much of what we offer, I’d never before seen on land, let alone at sea!

The AquaTheater – only on our Oasis Class ships – is the deepest pool at sea, flanked by two 9-metre diving platforms that set the scene for mesmerising dive spectaculars.

What destinations are people booking?

We are seeing a real interest in our European cruises next summer, as we will have some of the brand’s best hardware, including our two newest ships, sailing in the region.

Our UK guests are booking cruises in Europe and this is helped with some phenomenal current deals on flights booked through Royal Caribbean to the Mediterranean. Guests are also booking Anthem of the Seas – a real UK guest favourite – and there’s the added convenience of Anthem sailing from Southampton next summer.

Anthem will be sailing a mix of itineraries to the breath-taking Norwegian Fjords and the sundrenched Canary Islands.

Of course, our Caribbean itineraries are always a hit – particularly those calling at our exclusive island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Primed for memory making, family and friends can partake in firstof-their-kind thrills at Thrill Waterpark on their choice of 13 jaw-dropping slides, including the tallest waterslide in North America, and one-of-a-kind ways to chill in the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool – complete with swim-up bar.

Anthem of the Seas is sailing from Southampton in 2022 – what makes her great for the UK market, and what is your favourite feature on board?

Guests can experience some of the most thrilling activities aboard Anthem, which is an awardwinning ship. Our UK guests love Anthem for its live entertainment, including world-leading, full-scale show productions that blur the line between technology and entertainment at our awesome multidimensional venue, Two70, and West End smash hit “We Will Rock You” in the Royal Theatre.

The ship boasts 26 restaurants and bars. Guests will never get bored on Anthem, with activities including Anthem’s North Star, an all-glass observation capsule that offers unrivalled 360-degree views of the open ocean from 91 metres above sea level. Back on deck, holidaymakers can sink some hoops or let loose on the dodgems at SeaPlex – the largest indoor active space at sea – or surf the waves from

the comfort of the ship on FlowRider, our popular surf simulator.

My favourite feature is RipCord by iFly, where you can learn to freefall with the world’s first sky diving experience at sea! It really is a thrilling experience, skydiving in the middle of the ocean. I did this with my family and it’s safe to say we made memories that will last a lifetime.

Very exciting news that Royal Caribbean have introduced another new ship, Odyssey of the Seas. Can you tell us a bit about her?

Odyssey is our second Quantum-Ultra class ship, so she is similar in design to our Quantum class ships, such as Anthem, but has been tailored to the regions in which she will be sailing – the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Here are some of things you can expect: A Caribbean-inspired pool deck: Odyssey’s two open-air pools, four whirlpools and Splashaway Bay, anchored by a Quantum Ultra Class first – The Lime & Coconut bar – are designed for all holidaymakers to enjoy the sun and stars in style.

SeaPlex, the next-generation of a longtime Quantum Class favourite: This SeaPlex is the largest indoor and outdoor activity centre at sea, and debuts this venue’s first Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade.

Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar and Teppanyaki: Two Royal Caribbean restaurants, new to North America and Europe, join the varied line-up of dining options on board. The fresh take on the cruise line’s signature trattoria is the first to introduce its new wine bar concept while the other serves up East Asian flavours in the traditional Japanese style for which its named.

And in 2022 Wonder of the Seas will be joining the fleet.

When is she here and what can we expect?

Wonder will be our sixth Oasis class ship and will be sailing in Europe from May to October.

Prior to this, Wonder will sail her first sailings from early March in the Caribbean.

There is a new wave of possibilities across Wonder’s eight distinct neighbourhoods, an Oasis Class first, that include all-new features such as the Suite Neighbourhood, a cantilevered pool bar named The Vue, and Wonder Playscape – an interactive, open-air kids’ play area with awe-inspiring views. With returning favourites also on deck, like The Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea; Central Park, the neighbourhood filled with real plants from end to end; and the vibrant Caribbeaninspired pool deck experience, the innovative, new ship invites adventurers of all ages to reimagine, explore and make memories once again.

So finally, what’s coming next for Royal Caribbean?

We have so much more in store.

Following the arrival of Wonder of the Seas early next year, we have further new ships on their way, including our first Icon class ship, Icon of the Seas, launching in 2023.

We also have exciting plans on land – beach clubs, private destinations, new terminals and much more. Perfect Day at CocoCay has been tremendously successful and is a key draw for our guests. Further destination development can be expected, so that we can continue to offer epic and innovative holidays to our guests, both on land and at sea.

Day 1 - London to Budapest Fly to Budapest and transfer the port to join Amadeus Silver III in the afternoon. Enjoy an evening cruise through beautifully illuminated Budapest, as well as an Hungarian folklore show.

Day 2- Budapest > Esztergom Discover the beautiful sights and attractions of the Hungarian capital. This morning, explore the city which straddles the beautiful Danube. Depart from Budapest after lunch by coach through the Hungarian countryside to explore the artists‘ town of Szentendre, and Esztergom. Or, remain on board, enjoy an afternoon relaxing on deck as the vessel cruises through the Hungarian landscape.

Day 3 - Bratislava In the morning, the ship will call at Bratislava.

Explore the city during a walking tour, or on your own. This afternoon‘s optional excursions offer a choice – first, the opportunity to visit impressive Schloss Hof, or wine lovers can explore the wine country of Slovakia in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains, on the Small Carpathian wine route.

Day 4 – Vienna There is much to see in Imperial Vienna! Palaces, a Museum Quarter, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the famous Vienna State Opera among others. This afternoon, choose to venture to Schönbrunn Palace and in the evening take the chance to attend the “Sound of Vienna” and listen to the “Alt Wien” orchestra.

Day 5 - Vienna > Dürnstein > Melk > Emmersdorf The Wachau Valley is one of the most beautiful landscapes of Austria. In the morning dock in Dürnstein, with its blue medieval abbey on the edge

of the Danube. Wander through the village or join a walking tour. Alternatively, explore the wines of the Wachau, with a visit to the Krems winery. During lunch on board, sail on to Emmersdorf. Spend the afternoon discovering this typical small town or opt to travel across the river to nearby Melk.

Day 6 - Linz > Aschach > Passau Arrive in Linz, and enjoy a walking tour with a scenic drive to Aschach to rejoin the vessel for lunch, or a full day tour to the Mozart town of Salzburg with lunch at a local restaurant. Late in the afternoon, the vessel arrives at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers, in Passau, which you can explore on a walking tour. This evening, celebrate at the Captain’s Gala Dinner.

Day 7 – Regensburg After breakfast, arrive in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bavarian city of Regensburg and take a guided walking tour. This afternoon offers two wonderful options – an excursion to the Danube Gorge and Weltenburg Abbey or a visit to the Thurn & Taxis Palace. A traditional Bavarian dinner is served as your ship departs for Passau.

Day 8 - Disembark > Prague Wave goodbye to your shipmates and transfer to the train station for a rail journey to Prague, where you will have an evening at leisure and an overnight stay.

Day 9 - Venice Simplon-Orient-Express Today, it’s time to board the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. As soon as you step on board, the sense of a time gone by is unmistakable; from the painstakingly-restored marquetry that lines the hallways and bijou cabins to the beautiful René Lalique glass panelling. Book early for the most choice and best prices

There is massive pent-up demand for holidays, so by booking ahead of others you’ll be able to take advantage of the best deals such as free child places or room upgrades and secure the accommodation and resort of your choice.

Take out travel insurance

Make sure you take out comprehensive travel insurance to cover your specific needs as soon as you book your trip.

Many insurance policies now include different types of cover for coronavirus, so read the policy details carefully to ensure it has the level of cover you want.

ABTA recommend signing up to receive country specific email alerts so that any important updates go straight into your inbox.

Flexible booking policies are available

On top of the existing protections that come with booking a package holiday, many ABTA Members are also offering additional benefits or flexible cancellation and rebooking policies, such as allowing you to change your arrangements free of charge at a later date if needed.

Many destinations require you to have at least six months left on your passport, so check it will be valid for your travel dates and allow plenty of time to renew it if necessary. You should also apply for any visas you need in plenty of time and visit TravelHealthPro to find the latest travel health advice for your destination.

Now that the UK has left the EU, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the extra steps you may need to take to get ready for your trip. This includes checking you have a valid passport and the right documents for driving or taking your pet abroad.

As your departure date nears, make sure you’re up to date on the latest measures and documentation required for travel, both for your journey and once you arrive in destination. Pushing on to Yekaterinburg on Day 4, the capital of the Urals and city of the Great Divide; the crossing point between Europe and Asia. As well as spending time with one foot on each continent, you’ll learn of the fate of the Romanovs at the hands of the Bolsheviks, and of the city’s founding father, Peter the Great, and perhaps have the chance to study more recent Soviet history at the recentlyopened Boris Yeltsin Presidential Centre.

Days 5-6 Novosibirsk and Free Time The arts and science feature heavily in the culture of this modern Soviet city; capital of Siberia and

home to one of the largest opera houses in the world and an impressive statue of one Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin. There’s an opportunity to visit the world-class railway museum, and learn more about the immense railroad you are travelling on. Day 6 affords you some free time to repose and admire the beauty of the Russian landscape from the comfort of your hotel-on-rails.

Days 7-8 Irkutsk and Lake Baikal The remote outpost of Irkutsk’s buildings feature intricate lace-like decorative architecture, lending a distinctly unique appearance to the distant city. There is a champagne reception and private concert tonight, dedicated to the memory of the Decembrists uprising of 1825. Other activities include a spot of Russian cookery and a visit to a traditional Russian Dacha. On Day 8, hauled by a Soviet Era steam locomotive for several hours you will skirt the captivating Lake Baikal; source of 20% of the world’s fresh water and over a mile deep, surrounded by white-capped peaks and dramatic scenery. Here you can delight in a boat ride to the small settlement of Listvyanka, and later enjoy a lakeshore barbeque prepared

Days 9-10 Ulan Ude and into Mongolia Today you’ll tour the Siberian Buryat Republic and be welcomed at the Old Believers’ Village by indigenous Buryat people, where you’ll learn about their culture and experience local traditions first-hand as they treat you to a folk concert with dancing. On Day 10, the journey crosses the border into Mongolia*; a land of endless green Steppes, dotted with nomadic villages with their traditional homes Gers (Yurts) and grazing livestock. You’ll visit one such village in the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and meet its

residents in their secluded environment, perhaps trying your hand at horse-riding, an intrinsic part of this way of life. There is also a tour of Mongolia’s capital, Ulaan Baatar, taking in the significant Gandan Buddhist Monastery, before heading to the jaw-dropping silvery monument to Ghenghis Khan outside the city, and a performance of traditional throat singing and contortionists. * Please note, depending on final timings provided by the railway authorities Golden Eagle may substitute the railway journey from Russia into Ulaan Baatar with a private jet charter from Irkutsk or Ulan Ude so that they can maintain the advertised programme for Mongolia. Days 11-13 On board As you continue on across the most remote wilds of Russia and close to the north Chinese border, you have free time to sit back, relax and watch the wide Siberian terrain of this epic voyage roll by the windows of your luxury train – in between delicious meals.

Days 14-15 Vladivostok Arriving into Vladivostok marks the end of this truly legendary expedition. You’ll discover this important Naval hub; closed for over 60 years to foreigners, it is home to the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet and a preserved WW2 submarine. A transfer will take you to your 5-star hotel for an overnight stay with a farewell dinner, and in the morning of Day 15 you’ll bid “do svidaniya” to Russia and take your included transfer to the airport.
