WE LIVE HERE stronger north stonehouse photo project

...is a collective formed of residents of Stonehouse, keen to rewrite the narrative of this much loved local area. All of the work featured, has been made during what we hope to be the last in a long year of lockdowns. What has united many, is the new sense of community and togetherness across our city. Looking out for your neighbour, and redefining what it is to feel connected in a time when so many are kept apart. Plymouth, and Stonehouse have a vibrant and creative community, with a lot to give. we hope this project is the first of many, and look forward to what the year ahead brings for North Stonehouse. With thanks to local resident and photographer Zuleika Fray for supporting this project, and Cliik community sparks funding. - Emma Winslet, Digital & Community Projects Fotonow CIC

Arnet

‘My name is Arnet, I’ve lived in Stonehouse for eleven years, over the years I’ve grown to love living here. There’s a feeling of possibility, a growing energy of people who want to make this a special place to live. It’s all about community, people getting together to enjoy making the area they live in a home. I love the diversity of people that you get to meet here. It’s real, life on many different levels.’

Arnet

‘This makes

is me

my favourite feel happy

place that [probably]

- the garden seat is where I can read, look at the flowers and ripening fruit and listen to music over the headphones [too many local cats in the area have scared the birds away]. Apart from pigeons and seagulls....’

Stephen

‘I was part of the North Road West Residents Association for a number of years - but there doesn’t seem to be any community life [that we have found] until very recently.’

‘Hopefully this project will bring a few people closer together.’

Edward & Fleur

Edward has lived in Plymouth for over 15 years, and in North Stonehouse for around 15 months.

‘I have always thought that there is more to this area and this community than meets the eye. When I moved, I needed somewhere close to Victoria Park, as I knew I would have a dog soon.’

‘For Fleur, Victoria Park is the beating heart of North Stonehouse, with grass to play on, squirrels to chase, and other dogs to play with.’

Edward & Fleur

‘The project was a nice opportunity to change my perspective, and look again at North Stonehouse in a fresh way, through Fleur’s eyes.’

‘This project was fun to do and opened up some chances to explore the little details of where I live in a new way.’

Dean

‘My name is Dean, I’m a fairly new resident of North Stonehouse but have been in Plymouth for a while now.’

Margo & daughter

‘This project was such a great idea, it allowed me to appreciate this neighbourhood more and made me realise just how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful part of Plymouth.’

a word from our resident photographer...

My name is Zuleika Fray, I’m a fashion editorial and fine art photographer. I am a fairly recent resident of North Stonehouse, and have been commissioned by the amazing Fotonow to help run this project. It’s been a blast to get to know more of the residents of this area and to help create more art with the community, something I think is key to building a better place to live! From learning about the history of Stonehouse, to foraging tips and local artists who also live in the area, the project has really helped to bring a different perspective on the diversity of North Stonehouse.
