Having been a part of the Farmers Market since 2000, JJ’s Organics- a fresh fruit and vege shop on Riverbend Road, Napier- was around years before organics became trendy.

Two very inspiring ladies, Janet and Judy created and began the business with a vision for a fresher future.

Janet loved talking to us about how their gardens and crops are being used by locals to create products which they can also sell in their shop.

JJ’s Organics provides a huge selection of fresh fruit and veges, including Bok choy, Beetroot and Spinach Beet! (Don’t worry, they also sell local free-range eggs and heaps of citrus fruits too. ) All the staff and helpers at JJ’s Organics are super friendly.

Sitting in the middle of everything, just outside the shop, is a huge tree called the Heart of JJ’s, which towers over everything, call in and check it out !

artIVIST Sallie Dunford Sallie is passionate about all art forms and seeing the benefit they have on our wellbeing while enhancing the wider environment arounds us.

With Papatuanuku as her life force, Sallie uses this to reflects the rich, fertile soil upon which a community is founded. Her experience as an educator and motivational speaker has shown what is possible when communities collaborate, working together for global solutions and for the greater good of all.

Sallie uses her art as a voice for change to inspire others and also see a more positive and supportive way forward for tamariki and rangatahi as the next leaders and wayshowers.

Rangatahi Voting Age

In two years time, I will be 16 years old.

I will be able get a driver's license, a firearms license, carry weapons, leave school, get married, give consent to medical procedures

and consent to sexual intercourse. But I can’t

vote. Lowering the voting age is all about equality, equity, accountability and fairness. It is about the voice of the next generation who will be the ones to inherit this planet and the consequences of the decisions, good or bad, that were made by our politicians. We should be allowed to voice our opinions and vote on the issues that matter to the next generation, when today’s politicians are lining the pages of textbooks.

New Zealand has a proud history of innovation, especially in our democracy.

Democracy in this country is all about fairness and the mentality of giving the power to the people. We were the first nation in the world to allow women the right to vote, gold miners the right to vote, Māori the right to vote.

Now it is time to give 16-year old’s the right to vote.

The voting age has been previously lowered in 1969 and in 1974, around the time of the Vietnam war, where the young generations were protesting the wars. The government gave 18-year old's the right to voice their opinion about the war and about what should be done against it.

Previously, the voting age was lowered in times of hardship and injustice.

Once again, through climate change and Covid-19, we have reached a point where now more than ever do we need the voices of the next generation to be heard.

A generation that will be the future of Aotearoa.

Flash Trash is a combined photography project between FOTO IWI and Hastings City Vibrancy Fund bringing shapes and textures of nature into the city.

You can view the 30 submitted entries throughout the CBD through the month and in a special exhibition at the Hastings Library.

E - Wasteful ARTICLE BY CHRIS PROCTOR

Henry Coulson from the Hawke's Bay Environment Center is passionate about E-Recycling and what it can contribute to our nationwide environmental awareness and response.

Coulson is the Centre's E-Waste manager. He oversees a team of volunteers that dismantle electronic waste and then sorts the individual components into groups to be sent to metal recyclers throughout the country or overseas.

Just like the Zero Waste programme, E-Waste recycling is at the heart of the Centre's philosophy.

However, only 2.7% of all waste generated in Hawkes Bay annually is actually recycled. This trumps the nationwide statistic, which is as low as 1.8%.

The Environment Centre's goal is to set Hawkes Bay on a sustainable growth path, meaning it will aim to increase the recycling capabilities by 0.5% annually. Coulson says that this goal is sustainable and achievable and will set the bay on a path to achieving more remarkable E-Waste recycling in the future.

The Centre is doing hugely beneficial things for our region, but the citizens of Hawkes Bay can do the same. The Centre offers the E-Waste recycling service, which reduces the amount of harmful waste going into landfills for a small fee. E-Waste can be dropped at the Environment Centre itself at 1004 Karamu Road North. As mentioned above, it also provides services such as the Zero Waste programme, which is great for event organisers wanting to reduce their carbon footprint. Also, the Centre offers volunteer positions for dismantling E-waste, which is a learning opportunity and a service to the community.

Coulson encourages community members to volunteer as help is much needed in providing the services that make a difference.

KORERO WITH REPAIR CAFE FOUNDER HELEN HOWARD BY MIA SUTHERLAND Inspired by Doughnut Economics NZ, a local mum of two, Helen Howard, has set out with a goal. She is determined to educate the people of Hawkes Bay about the huge amount of rubbish going into landfills around the country, and what you can do to stop it.

Helen is working with her best friend Elisa Kersley, on an upcoming project in Napier called the Repair Café.

If you hadn’t heard of it already, a repair café is a place where people bring in everyday items that may have a fault or be broken and get them fixed by handy volunteers. Items such as electrical, mechanical, toys from your childhood, jewellery, or just that silly old zipper that just won’t zip. Helen’s aim for the project is to get as many objects repaired as possible and to hopefully pass on some useful tips and tricks for your everyday life.

The Repair Café

Sharing skills and learning new ways to fix things is a fantastic way to bring together a community. Hopefully, it will be a good way to strengthen our community's resilience and get people to learn about how much waste is going into landfills when it doesn’t need to be, says Helen.

Basically, the whole project is about waste reduction and figuring out how many things around the house can be recycled, re-used, or re-furbished.Operating on the last Sunday of each month The Repair Cafe will run for three months initially from October and be held at Asher Hall, cnr Tennyson, and Dalton Street, Napier.

Our rangatahi media team put the questions to our City Mayors about what's important to them .

SANDRA HAZLEHURST MAYOR OF HASTINGS

How do you see Napier looking in 20 years from now, ?

Our current planning is focussed on futureproofing our city for our community; on building a vibrant, resilient city for the enjoyment of all.

We want to make sure Napier residents have clean water to drink and to swim in and we are investing significantly in our water infrastructure.

Many youth have concerns around climate change and the future what is your advice to them ?

As global citizens we all have a responsibility to be aware of and understand the wider world – and our place in it. With regards to climate change I encourage the youth of Napier to take an active role in our community and work with others to make our planet more sustainable. To build their own understanding of the impact that climate change is having on our local community and see that they have the power to act and influence the world around them.

How are you setting an example to youth in embracing a diverse community ?

Our Youth Council recently assisted with the organisation of the Celebrating Cultural DiverCity event. This annual event is a celebration of the rich cultures in Hawke’s Bay. We are also in the preparation phase for the development of our Multi-Cultural Strategy for the city and look forward to inviting the youth of Napier, from all cultures, to provide input into this strategy.

How do you as Mayor see Hastings looking in 20 years?

A city of beauty. Having lots of people living in it. Having high density apartment living.

Having a mix of beautiful green space and lots and lots of arts and culture. Building on what we are doing now so more will come.

Tell us what makes you happy.

The thing that makes me most happy when I see and hear the success stories of our people. Seeing young people reaching their potential makes me incredibly happy. They are our future, and their well-being is very important to me.

I also love the arts. My heart sings when I listen to a performance at the opera house.

I come out of the opera house totally uplifted.

What's the most rewarding part about being Mayor?

I have the best job in the world! I think the most rewarding part of it is that you bring your team together with a shared vision. It's so rewarding when you have such incredible results. To see the change and the Impact we can make on families lives.

THOUSANDS OF NATIVES TO BE PLANTED ON STATE HIGHWAY 35 Nearly 4000 native plants are being planted along State Highway 35’s roadside banks over the next four weeks to help strengthen and stabilise the road.

“These plants will help stabilise slopes in the soft rock we have here, and will reduce the amount of water that ends up on the road, which can weaken the surface and destabilise the foundations.

PLOG NAPIER Plog Napier is a project to get you out and about with your whanau and friends to help combat plastic pollution in our oceans.

Simply go for a walk or jog with your nearest and dearest (or on your own!) and pick up rubbish while you're at it.

Take a photo of your haul and upload it to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #plognapier You might take a Saturday beach stroll with the whanau, go on a solo Sunday jog, or simply pick up that plastic bottle in the carpark while you're dashing into the supermarket either way you are doing heaps for our planet!
