La fotografia, al pari della scultura, vive di luce. Eppure tale arte, forse più di qualunque altra, ha molti lati oscuri: li esige. Il termine che designa tale attività dichiara una verità immediata e imprescindibile: è la luce che forgia l’immagine. Il professionista però, che scatta la foto e la stampa, sa che è tra le atre ombre di una camera oscura che questa affiora, protetta dalle tenebre che avvolgono la pellicola sulla quale è impressa. È nel buio che essa emerge; solo da lì può venire alla luce.

L’impronta del reale, non diversamente da quella tracciata su un foglio di carta, sembra originare da una realtà non tanto duplicata quanto duplice. È il caso del bianco e nero: due entità contrapposte, spesso speculari, capaci di cancellarsi e nondimeno necessarie l’una all’altra per essere distinte e affermarsi, per esistere ed essere percepite come tali. Due nature irriducibilmente diverse, in sé complete ma anche complementari, capaci di compenetrarsi e di dialogare. Due assoluti dai contorni sfumati, insondabili e arcani come la vita e la morte, che partecipano del medesimo mistero dell’esistenza. Tra questi poli, dei quali scorgiamo solo le gradazioni intermedie, si snoda la nostra vicenda e si dipana l’intelligenza: luci e ombre marcano il nostro procedere, ci consentono di valutare distanze e al tempo stesso ci misurano, ci connotano e ci differenziano, abitano i recessi più reconditi dell’uomo e del mondo, ci permettono di la dicotomia originaria che è alla base del processo fotografico per carpire l’essenza delle cose e restituire l’intima struttura dell’universo. Consapevole che luci e ombre permeano le pieghe della vita, egli segue, col bianco e nero, le tracce di tutte le possibili cromie.

Nero e bianco, terra e cielo, non sono solo elementi primari per narrare una storia ma dimensioni così vaste e profonde che all’essere umano non è dato abbracciare o comprendere appieno; tantomeno catturare con un’occhiata. Tuttavia è tra questi luoghi, che sorprendono e spauriscono, che si sofferma, paziente, lo sguardo e l’analisi dell’artista. È tra essi – sembra dirci la prima immagine - che si compie il nostro destino: la dimora che possediamo è sempre e soltanto un orizzonte aperto su una o più spalancature.

La ricerca dell’equilibrio che caratterizza queste foto accomuna anche le persone. Sospese tra infiniti, vengono anch’esse chiamate a confrontarsi con qualcosa di indefinito, visceralmente estraneo e altro rispetto a loro, che le ammonisce che ciò che sembra inconcepibile – e che pure è percepibile - esiste e in quanto tale, pur rimanendo misterioso e in parte incomunicabile, può essere ritratto. Di fronte a ciò che è privo di confini ognuno può sperimentare che le realtà esteriori, finanche spirituali, sono altrettanto vere, presenti e innegabili di quelle interiori.

Queste immagini ci invitano ad andare oltre le apparenze, rammentandoci quanto possa variare la consistenza delle cose e come, a seconda dei punti di vista, possa tornare diversa. La luce, che imbeve e

indagare il cosmo e ci aiutano a conoscere noi stessi. Forse è proprio per questo che Elio Ciol può usare

marca i panorami di Ciol, sottolinea, plasma, evidenzia, solca, accarezza, esalta, purifica, tocca, dissolve, svela: muta, si direbbe, la propria natura e incide la realtà in modo diverso. Gli atomi eterei che la compongono possono essere riflessi e permeare la terra, acquistare sostanza e farla perdere all’oggetto su cui si posano, prenderne addirittura il posto ed essere, al tempo stesso, costretti a duplicare una faccia del reale: come l’acqua, che fluisce o ristagna, che irrompe o che, al contrario, giace quieta e trasparente al punto da far scomparire la sua stessa evidenza.

Come pioggia la luce può precipitare sulla terra: è neve: un cielo che si spoglia e si appoggia sulle cose, si fa tangibile, palpabile, ma non imprigionabile. Un agente che oblia gli scenari più solidi, modifica le consuetudini e rinnova la vista.

Luce è anche la nebbia: presenza diafana ed enigmatica, visibile e inafferrabile, che nello spazio sospeso di un sospiro ci fa intravedere l’essenziale. È una luminosità capace di velare, carica di un incontro che promette e gelosamente serba. È il condensarsi dell’invisibile che celando svela, l’astratto che si concreta, un grumo di vita sospeso nel vuoto, un tutto entro il nulla. L’arte, come la nebbia, va decifrata; ciò

nonostante prende forma senza alcun bisogno di proclamazioni teoriche. Come la nebbia essa ci mostra la densità del silenzio: quello spazio vibrante e avvolgente – nel quale accade - che è alla base di ogni autentica comunicazione.

L’essere taciturno del fotografo appare allora per quello che è: non ritrosia, bensì apertura: disposizione ad ascoltare e intendere più che a parlare di sé. Contrario rispetto al caos, il silenzio denota un ordine interiore che è l’ordito sul quale possono essere intessute relazioni interpersonali, sperimentate insolite geometrie, definite nuove geografie. È misura dell’infinito che possiamo accogliere in noi.

Rapida o lenta, diffusa o radente, la luce disegna e trasforma, assieme all’uomo, i paesaggi che attraversa.

Ci mostra, al di là di questo, come un fattore esterno e transitorio, che potrebbe smarrirsi tra distese sterminate, possa invece insinuarsi nelle realtà più minute, abitare i particolari e riuscire a illuminarli dall’interno. Quando ciò si realizza esperiamo l’inconsueto: il solidificarsi della luce, per esempio, e lo sbiancarsi degli elementi. Simili alle sequenze innevate, le foto all’infrarosso presentano un ribaltamento dei toni chiari e scuri. Il fulgore che balena inatteso da corpi terrestri si contrappone a cieli contrastati, pesanti, materici: privi di una luce caduta al suolo e in taluni casi, per questo, assenti.

La luce, dunque, parla anche di terra. Aspra, cruda, nemica, oppure irradiata, gentile, feconda, essa registra le durezze e la poesia di una vita condotta in una regione, ferita e avara, conquistata dalla caparbietà e dai sogni di prosperità dei suoi abitanti. Lavorato con pazienza e fatica, nel tentativo di controllare una natura non sempre provvida e benevola, il territorio del Friuli-Venezia Giulia reca memoria dei valori che l’hanno scolpito. Essi dicono l’armonia e il rispetto verso un microcosmo nel

quale, umilmente, gli esseri si riconoscevano membri di una realtà che li sovrastava. Queste zone, chiaramente e inconfondibilmente personalizzate, sono visitate da un occhio - altrettanto disciplinato che, dirigendo il nostro guardo in direzioni precise, manifesta la spiccata personalità che lo domina.

Tramite la percezione il fotografo legge e interpreta ciò che lo circonda, spartisce una conoscenza, abita, prima ancora, un mondo e lo condivide. La vista ci situa infatti nell’universo ponendoci in relazione agli altri enti. Ci obbliga a instaurare rapporti. La diversità nel condurre questi ultimi determina uno stile di vita: un modo di vedere e vivere l’esistenza. Parimenti, la maniera in cui si esprime Ciol (ovvero il suo stile) non è una mera questione di tecnica – che egli peraltro padroneggia - bensì di visione. Il fotografo non guarda secondo l’obiettivo, ma attraverso di esso. Il progresso tecnologico ci porta talora a dimenticare che la fotografia non è mai stata una semplice lastra impressa dal sole; sempre, piuttosto, un supporto da sviluppare con l’intelligenza e (se necessario) con altri sali.

Quantunque l’osservazione colleghi inestricabilmente la visione alla riflessione, occorre ricordare che per vedere non è sufficiente pensare. Le geometrie e le geografie che l’artista raffigura sono reali. Elio Ciol può rappresentare l’ordine e l’armonia perché esistono attorno a lui. Il fotografo non inventa (se eludere un collegamento diretto col mondo reale. Con quest’ultimo, di fatto, la fotografia, a differenza di altre arti, mantiene un nesso stretto e necessario. I disegni che l’autore scorge nel creato sono segni, antichi o recenti, di un’opera che è prima di lui e che lo attende. Sono simbolo di una creazione che, lungi dall’essere conclusa, di continuo si rinnova. Al pari degli altri viventi anche il fotografo può modificare l’ambiente, ma dinanzi al firmamento si scopre concreatore, non creatore. Mirando il cosmo si avverte scrutato, fissandolo si accorge che coglie solo ciò che accoglie in sé, provando a dirlo registra e trascrive lo spirito dei luoghi.

Vi sono, in ciò che fa, la responsabilità e la scelta di una testimonianza (che si riflette nella selezione dei soggetti così come delle inquadrature, nella predilezione per il bello piuttosto che per il deforme), congiunte alla pazienza, alla modestia e al rispetto consoni a un traduttore. Intesa in tal modo la professione fotografica si profila meno come una libera forma di espressione e più come un compito, un costante esercizio di ricerca, di ascolto e di sintonia.

Photography, like sculpture, takes life through light. And yet this art, perhaps more than any other, has many dark sides: it demands them. The term that denotes this activity declares an immediate and irrefutable truth: it is light that forges images. However the professional who snaps the photo and prints it, knows that it emerges from the dark shadows of a darkroom protected by the obscurity that envelopes the film on which it is etched. It emerges from darkness; only from there can it come to light.

The imprint of reality, not unlike that drawn on a sheet of paper, seems to arise from a reality that is not so much a copy as it is a double. This is the case of black and white: two opposed entities, often mirror images, capable of vanishing and yet necessary to each other in order to be discerned, to exist and to be perceived as such. Two indomitably different natures, complete in themselves, but also complementary, capable of partaking and communicating. Two absolutes with fading contours, as unfathomable and cryptic as life and death, which take part in the mystery of existence. Our vicissitude unfolds and our intelligence unravels between these two poles, of which we can only see intermediate ranges: lights and shadows mark our way, allowing us to assess the distance and at the same time they appraise us, involve us and differentiate us, inhabiting the most hidden recesses of man and the world, allowing us to look the original dichotomy that is the basis of photography to capture the essence of things and return the intimate structure of the universe. Aware that lights and shadows permeate the folds of life, he follows with black and white the traces of all possible colour combinations.

Black and white and earth and sky; these are not only basal elements of a tale, but also immense and inscrutable dimensions that human beings cannot encompass or fully comprehend; in fact, humans cannot even capture them with a glance. However, it is in these amazing and daunting places, where the gaze and the analytic thinking of the artist patiently linger. It is among them – the first image seems to tell us – that our destiny is fulfilled: our dwelling place is always merely a horizon open on one or more gaping spaces.

The search for the equilibrium that characterizes these photos unites even people. Suspended among spaces, they are called on to confront something that is indefinite, instinctively strange, and different from them, something that warns them that what would appear to be inconceivable – and which is detectable – exists and therefore, simply remaining mysterious and in part incommunicable, it can be portrayed. Faced by what has no boundaries, everyone can test that extraneous reality, and even spiritual reality, are just as real, just as present and undeniable as intimate reality.

These images invite us to go beyond appearances, reminding us of how things have different consistency and how, according to different points of view, it can change. The light that soaks up and emphasized

into creation and helping us to get to know ourselves. This is perhaps the reason that Elio Ciol can use

Ciol’s landscapes, emphasizes, moulds, highlights, scores, caresses, glorifies, purifies, touches, dispels, reveals: it changes, one could say, its own essence and engraves reality in a different way. The ethereal atoms that form it can be reflected and permeate earth; they can assume substance and take it away from the object they rest on, even take their place and be, at the same time, forced to duplicate a side of reality: like water, that flows or stands still, that bursts in, or on the contrary, that lies muted and crystal clear, to the point of doing away with its own evidence.

Just like rain, light can flood the earth: it is snow: a naked sky resting on things makes itself tangible, palpable, and yet it is a sky that cannot be seized. An agent that is unable to recall the most solid sceneries modifies tradition and renews perspective.

Light is also fog: a diaphanous and enigmatic presence, visible and elusive, which in the suspended moment of a sigh, allows us to see what is essential. It is a light that can conceal, filled with promise and yet a jealous cherish. It is the invisible taking shape and revealing while hiding, abstract becoming

reality, a fleck of life suspended in emptiness, whole within void. Art, just like fog, needs to be decrypted; despite this, it takes shape without needing any theoretical statements. Just like fog, it shows us the density of silence: that vibrant and enveloping space– where it takes shape – that is at the base of each authentic communication.

The silent being of the photographer then appears for what he is: not reluctance, but rather openmindedness: a tendency to listen and understand rather than speaking of oneself. The opposite of chaos, silence denotes an interior order which is the net in which interpersonal relationships can be built, unusual geometries tested out and new geographies defined. We can welcome within us a measure of infinity.

Slow or fast, diffused or grazing, light draws and transforms, together with man, the scenery it goes through. It shows us beyond the scenery that light, an external and transitory factor that could get lost among endless stretches, can instead creep into the minutest reality, live in its details and illuminate them from within. When this happens, we accomplish the unusual: the solidifying of light, for example, and elements turning pale. Much like snow-capped sequences, the infrared pictures show a reversal of light and shade effects. The unexpected brightness that flares from terrestrial bodies contrasts with skies of heavy matter: without a light on the ground and in some cases, and for this reason, absent.

Light then speaks about earth. Pungent, stark, hostile, or lit up, kind, fertile, it records the toughness and the poetry of a life spent in a distressed and miser region , conquered by stubbornness and dreams of prosperity of his inhabitants. Much patience and effort was placed in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the attempt to control a nature not always provident and benevolent. For this reason, the Friuli-Venezia Giulia territory carries the memories of the values that defined it. They tell about harmony and respect

of a microcosm in which the humble beings recognized they were part of a superior reality. These areas, clearly and unmistakably personalized, are seen by the naked eye – just as disciplined - which, gazing in certain directions reveals its bold personality.

Through perception, the photographer reads and interprets all that surrounds him; he shares his knowledge, and lives in a world, which he shares. Vision places us in the universe, to interact with other entities. It forces us to create relationships. The different ways we interact determines a modus vivendi: a way of seeing and living one’s life. Likewise, the way Ciol expresses himself (or his style) is not a mere issue of technique – of which he is indeed a master – but rather of vision. The photographer does not see according to the lens, but through it. Technological advances make us sometimes forget that photography was never a simple plate imprinted by the sun; rather it was always a backup to be developed with intelligence, and (if necessary) in other ways.

Although observation connects insolvably vision to reflection, it is necessary to remember that to see, thought alone is not enough. The geometries and geographies depicted by the artist are real. Elio Ciol the exclusion of the Latin definition of the term): he finds. If he wanted to be abstract, he couldn’t in any way elude the direct ties with the real world. Photography, in fact, differently from other arts, maintains a strong and much needed connection with the real world. The drawings the author finds in creation are signs, ancient or recent of a work, which preceded him and which is awaiting him. They are symbol of a creation that is nowhere near its conclusion, but rather regenerates itself perpetually.

Just like other living creatures, the photographer can also modify the environment but in front of the heavens, he is co-creator and not creator. When he admires the universe he feels like he is being watched. As he stares at it, he realizes he can seize only what he welcomes within himself. Attempting to describe it, he immortalizes and transcribes the spirit of the places.

What he does implies the responsibility and the choice of a testimony (reflected in the selection of subjects and framing, and in the choice of beauty over ugliness), along with patience, modesty, and respect, in keeping with a translator. From this perspective, photography is less a free form of expression and more a task, a constant exercise in research, in listening, and staying in synch.

biografia

Elio Ciol è nato nel 1929 a Casarsa della Delizia (PN), dove tuttora risiede e lavora.

Ha iniziato a lavorare fin da giovane nel laboratorio fotografico del padre. Ha acquisito una vasta esperienza tecnica e ha maturato un suo modo di leggere le opere d’arte e di esprimersi attraverso la fotografia, segnatamente nel paesaggio.

Nella ricerca costante di nuove tecniche e di nuove forme di linguaggio per immagini ha fatto parte dal 1955 al 1965 del cineclub di Udine. Ha realizzato vari documentari, a passo ridotto, premiati al Concorso Nazionale del Cineamatore di Montecatini e al Concorso Internazionale del Cineamatore di Salerno.

Dal 1955 al 1960 ha fatto parte del circolo fotografico “La Gondola” di Venezia.

Nel 1962 ha partecipato come fotografo di scena al film “Gli ultimi” di Vito Pandolfi e P.D.M. Turoldo.

Nel 1963, a Milano, ha collaborato con Luigi Crocenzi alla realizzazione della “Fondazione Arnaldo e Fernando Altimani per lo studio e la sperimentazione sul linguaggio per immagini”.

Nello stesso anno ha esposto all’Ambrosianeum di Milano le foto di un suo servizio sull’attività di Gioventù Studentesca nella Bassa Milanese.

Numerose le sue mostre fotografiche in Italia e all’estero. Molto significative l’antologica del 1999 voluta dai Civici Musei e dal Comune di Udine nel grandioso spazio espositivo della Chiesa di S. Francesco e quella promossa dal Comune di Padova, nel 2002, nel Palazzo del Monte di Pietà.

Nel 2004 la Provincia di Pordenone e il Comune di Casarsa Della Delizia hanno promosso una mostra di sue nuove fotografie raccolte in dittici e trittici, e per l’occasione è stato realizzato il convegno sul collezionismo fotografico: La memoria ambigua.

Nel 2006 è stato invitato a esporre nel Museo Diocesano e Gallerie del Tiepolo a Udine.

Nel 2006 la Cohen Amador Gallery di New York ha esposto una sua mostra personale.

Nel 2007 è stato invitato al “Meeting per l’amicizia tra i popoli” di Rimini, assieme a Pepi Merisio, per un’antologica.

Ha ottenuto premi e riconoscimenti, tra i quali, limitando la citazione ai più recenti: 1991, Casarsa, Cittadino dell’anno; 1992, Londra, Premio Kraszna Krausz per il fotolibro “Assisi”, a pari merito con i libri di Sebastian Salgado, Paul Strand e Irving Penn; 1993, Pordenone, Premio S.Marco; 1995, Spilimbergo, C.R.A.F. Premio Speciale Friuli-Venezia Giulia Fotografia; 1996, Londra, Premio Kraszna Krausz per il fotolibro “Venezia”, a pari merito con i libri di R. Doisneau, E. Hartmann e N. Rosenblum; 1997, Amsterdam, World Press Photo, terzo premio nella categoria “Natura e Ambiente”; 1999, Buia, Premio Nadal Furlan 1999, XXI edizione; 2001, Padova, “Dietro l’obiettivo: una vita” Foto Padova 2001; 2003, Padova, “Premio Foto Padova 2003 per il migliore fotolibro” Ascoltare la luce.

Elio Ciol was born in 1929 in Casarsa della Delizia (Italy), where he still lives and works.

In his early youth he began to work in his father’s photography workshop. He has acquired a vast technical experience and has reached a personal way of seeing and expressing himself through photography, especially in landscapes.

In his persistent pursuit of new techniques and forms of expression through images, he was a member of the Udine film society from 1955 to 1965. He made several 16mm documentaries, which won awards at the Montecatini National Film Amateur Competition and at the Salerno International Film Amateur Competition.

From 1955 to 1960 he was a member of Venice’s “The Gondola” Photographers’ Club.

In 1962 he took part as a set photographer in the making of the film Gli ultimi by Vito Pandolfi and Padre D.M. Turoldo.

In 1963, in Milan he collaborated with Luigi Crocenzi in the creation of the “Arnaldo and Fernando Altimani Foundation for the study and experimentation of language through images”.

In the same year the Milan Ambrosianeum exhibited his photo service on the activities of “Gioventù Studentesca” in the province of Milan.

Ciol has held many exhibitions in Italy and abroad. The most important were his 1999 anthological show in Udine, wanted by the Civici Musei and the City di Udine in the grand space of the Church of St. Francis, and the exhibition in the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, in Padua, promoted by the City of Padua, in 2002.

In 2004, the Province of Pordenone and the Municipality of Casarsa promoted an exhibit of his new photos, Il fascino del vero, collected in diptychs and triptychs, and in the same venue was also promoted the conference on photo collecting: La memoria ambigua.

In 2006 he was invited by the Udine Diocesan Museum and the Tiepolo Gallery to display his photos.

In the same year the New York Gallery of Cohen Amador organized an exhibition of Ciol’s work.

In 2007 Ciol was invited by the “Meeting per l’amicizia fra i popoli” of Rimini to exhibit an anthology of his works together with the photographer Pepi Merisio.
