Mapping and Design Research

“Epirus Apeiros” is an oriented design research on the geographical area of Epirus in Greece. Initially, the research examines the hydrological profile of the area through systematic mapping of the water landscapes and statistical data rep resentation. Through the process of generation of diagrams and maps, I identified the dynamics of these landscapes and the current manage ment strategy of the heavy water infrastructures such as hydroelectric and irrigation dams on riverscapes. The main objective of the research is to draw conclusions about the problems and needs of wetlands which constitute 40.5% of Epirus coastline and the potential flood risk due to the high precipitation rate caused by climate change. Design Research and Strategy

“Landscape as a mechanism” is a research and strategy about the fluvial landscapes of Arach thos river (Epirus, Greece) that springs from the mountain of Pindos and flows into the Amvraki kos bay. The research is focusing on the mouth of the river which used to function as a perfect hydrological mechanism composed of three dif ferent landscapes: the artificial lake Pournariou with the two hydroelectric power dams, the city of Arta and the productive meadow with the flu vial settlements. Throughout the research pro cess there is an attempt of mapping the flood ing emergencies of the settlements and fields across the riversides as well as the dramatic change of the coastline. The two dams seem to be responsible for the upper problems consider ing that the river flow has changed because of the climate

A detailed narrative of the proposed strategy for managing the three landscapes – parts of river’s mouth mechanism. It is proposed the controlled change of river flow through a different dam management, the re generation of Arta’s riverfront and the phasing flooding of the meadow for water cultivation.

Arachthos is a raging river with uncon trolled flow that has repeatedly flooded the city of Arta and the settlements of the meadow. The urban growth of the city in dicates its hydrophobic attitude and al thought the city is encircled by the river, it has kept a safe distance from the riparian

Vacation House inside a Ruin Verga settlement, Messinia, GR One canopy and one deck are installed to define two types of spaces. The bedroom and the open-air kitchen is accommodat ed in the former courtyard of the old house facing south to the village and taking ad vantage of the sea view. The pool and the lounging area are circumscribed by the ruins of the main house while maintaining the old overgrown walls. At the edge of the new structure, sliding panels are installed as a filter to provide sun protection during the afternoon. The main entrance to the structure has re mained the same as well as the old stoned path “kalderimi” that leads to it. The ruin remains intact and the new structure does not adhere to the decaying walls. It is only there to recover the original essence of the place and challenge the typology of the stone house.

The ruins enclose comfortable and view protected areas for lounging, swimming and showering, dining and food preparation ensuring all day outdoor living. An attempt is made to reconsider the degree of “priva cy” of each space for summer vacations. Therefore, an inversion of the existing ty pology of the yard is considered necessary in order to follow the current extrovert life style of a modern visitor.

The project is conceived as a summer re treat in a remote village and its design is built upon the dynamic contrast between the ruins of a 100 years old stone house versus a “light” structure of indoor and out door spaces. The project acts as a subtle threshold that provides not only the access to the decaying house but also an interest ing accommodation for the visitor.

In 2021, I collaborated with the General State Archives (G.S.A) of Greece in Messin ia as a volunteer for archiving and digitising 425 historical documents for a local family distillery of six generations. I organised the archiving system and recorded and pho tographed the heirlooms of the historical distillery. The outcome of this process was the publication of the book “Distilling Heri tage” which contains historical documents, photos, texts and old recipes. I personally designed the book, photographed part of the archive and wrote the texts about the importance of preserving the family legacy. The way that every object and document is presented in the book, tell a story about the family process of distillation and reveal memories of old Messinia, times. Greece
