MUSEUM AND CULTURAL CENTER

The building of Stratonism II in the camp of "Pavlos Melas" is a historical building in the city of Thessaloniki which began to be constructed at the end of the 19th century.

The biggest loss of the building is its roof, which is why it is the biggest part of the composition for the restoration of the building.

Because of the historic nature of the building, the new building project involves two museums dedicated to its history in order to preserve and enhance its character.

The first is dedicated to the Greek refugees on the ground floor, while the second, located on the upper floor, is dedicated to the national resistance. Its other uses primarily showcase the arts, forming a cultural centre for all ages.

The original shell of the building is preserved and inside it a new self-supporting structure is created, with a metal frame and a roof made of metal mesh and glass.

In the central part of the building is the main entrance, consisting of a marble staircase and elevators to connect the floors. The reception is part of the staircase.

At the end of the museum tour on the ground floor, there is a shop leading the visitor to a separate exit at the side of the museum through a windbreak.

An important part of the proposal is the external ramp which hugs the western side of the building and leads to a separate entrance on the upper floor. In addition to being a hazard exit, it creates a unique route for the visitor.

The surrounding area connects the building to the adjacent Stratonism II building, which has the same typology as they were constructed at the same time period.

GASPAR NOE'S: working space, bath and monument

In the interior design course we were asked to design the office space, the bathroom and a monument dedicated to a personality of our choice. This project is dedicated to the Argentine-French filmmaker Gaspar Noé. Some of his films are Irréversible, Enter the Void, Love, Climax.

The inspiration for the circular shape for the bathroom came from the circular rotations in bird's eye view that Gaspar Noé uses in his direction.

Then, wanting to incorporate in the design the contrast that exists in his films, such as the way the camera rotates in the violent scenes while in the happy ones it remains more stable and the contrast of colours between the scenes, the shape of a rectangular rectangle was used for the office space.

The desire to unite these two shapes led to the final shape of the floor plan. In addition, the monument is connected to the other spaces by essentially "cutting off" one corner from the floor plan to form a triangle.

MEMORIAL Something that expresses the films of this artist is savagery, claustrophobia and threat. These harsh concepts were used to create the memorial.

The memorial is placed outside the other spaces on a lower level.

This underground space is housed by a triangular surface with the appearance of broken glass, coinciding with the ground giving a sense of fear, which seems to be penetrated by a sharp metal object.

It can be approached from two sides by descending the narrow and dangerous stairs, as one has to bend down to get down.

Reaching the lower level the broken glass is now above making the space even more experiential.

This feeling does not stop there as inside the space a "violent" sound taken from a Noé film can be heard.

WORKING SPACE

BATHROOM

The visitor entering from the main entrance on the east side, enters directly into the film projection area, which is a large part of the artist's working space.

Passing the office, the visitor enters the transitional space leading to the bathroom.

It is worth noting that there is visual contact with the interior of the circular bathroom to ensure the notion of continuity, between the two spaces, which is also a directorial characteristic because in many scenes he chooses continuous uninterrupted shots with the use of a camera.

This feature is also evident in the openings of the space which is a continuous "strip" around the perimeter of the building.

The corridor is slightly uphill and narrow as well as circular to reinforce the notion of rotation and introversion.

A particular feature of the space is the circular glass roof with a great depth in the roof where there is a liquid element from which light diffuses. In these spaces, raw materials are predominantly used , concrete, metal, brick and glass, in order to attribute the rawness to the project.

WALK BY THE STREAM

The area of redevelopment in the urban landscape we dealt with is located in the city of Thessaloniki, specifically in 'Ano Toumba'.

As a result, flows are created that embrace the whole area and are eased into the urban fabric, thus becoming part of the composition.

The stream that runs through the area is endangered, by bungling, unauthorized residences and neglect of the habitat.

Through the convergence and divergence of these flows, two squares and a space specially designed for children are created.

The central idea of the project is to create a walk along the entire stream to enhance its value. The specificity of the topography makes it possible to create corridors that adapt to it, without major interventions

Through the pedestrian routes the main objective is the organized vegetation, both existing and new.

Both the weaknesses and threats and the potential of the place give rise to the central idea.

This involves a walk along the entire length of the stream. The specificity of the topography makes it possible to create routes that do not interfere with it but instead adapt to it.

By extension, flows are created that embrace the whole area and are eased into the urban fabric, making it part of the composition. In addition, through the convergences and divergences of these flows, two areas for relaxation and rest and a space with special equipment for children are created, as the main concern is to attract all ages.

Finally, by exploiting the flows-paths, green spaces are created with the most organised vegetation, both existing and proposed.

SMALL CONSTRUCTIONS

In this workshop it was asked to produce architectures or parts of it or parts of it that refer to, or recall, or imitate, or are inspired by forms or bearing organisms of nature-biology.

It consists of three different parts independent of each other, each using different materials for construction.

The last construction of the workshop used balloons to create an inflatable composition.

We designed a bridge which will be covered by an air chamber of circular cross-section.

This bridge will not only have a practical purpose, but will also serve as an aerial route overlooking the city of Venice. Access to it will be possible by exiting from the narrow streets of the city. It is supported on large forked piers with a deep foundation in the water.

The second construction is based on the membrane. Using netting and metal for the supports, it was intended to be placed in a park as a climbing device for children.

The design process began by packing the 4 ends of a rectangular piece of fabric and then packing two more points in the middle of the small sides to create a larger surface.

The following project demonstrates the potential of the tree, both as a design form and as a static carrier. A bus stop was designed whose poles are constructed as trees. The top of the poles branches off into individual elements, the tree branches, which eventually come to support the shed.

APARTMENT RENOVATION

This project is a renovation of an apartment in the centre of Athens, next to the Athens Concert Hall.

The redesign and the implementation study were done in collaboration with Zoe Berati, my fellow student at the university.

It is our first professional work.

The apartment is located on the third floor of a five-storey apartment building. The main entrance of the building is located on a pedestrian street on the northeast side of the building.

The building was built in the 70s. It has not been renovated since then. For this reason the renovation is total, as it was not in a suitable condition.

Only a part of the mosaic floor at the entrance of the apartment has been preserved.

The client is a young woman who is a film director and wanted a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, as well as a separate bathroom for guests. The apartment is 60 sq. m.

First entering the apartment on the left there is a multi-purpose furniture. There is space for a seat, for hanging clothes and a closet that functions as a storage room.

After the hallway, we face the living room which has access to the large balcony of the apartment. The bedroom was placed behind the living room and has its own private bathroom, as was the client's wish.

The second bathroom is located opposite the bedroom creating a very small hallway. Both bathrooms have windows in the skylight.

At the back of the apartment the kitchen and dining area was placed as the balcony there is on the southwest side for better lighting and ventilation. The whole house has parquet flooring, except for the bathrooms and the hallway.
