Editor’s letter Liz Skone James I can’t tell you how good it feels to be sat back in the ed’s chair (albeit not the usual one in the office), writing to you all again after our little pause. We returned with a slightly different, property-focused issue last month, but this one looks more like the Fabric we all know and love. We’ve included more lifestyle content, and a fascinating interview with north London based actor Daniel Mays. He tells us all about his compelling new ITV series Des, his worries for the future of the industry post COVID-19 and his struggles with home-schooling during lockdown (something many of us can relate to, I’m sure). With uncertainty still surrounding the return to school, our interiors feature this month focuses on creating inspiring spaces for little learners – here’s hoping that they’re only required for homework purposes, though. It’s fair to say that we could all do with a laugh right now. While Regent’s Park’s Open Air Theatre has postponed its planned summer season of full-scale productions, this September sees a chance to visit the beloved amphitheatre in a series of strictly socially distanced but nonetheless endorphin-lifting events. Indeed, MORE Outdoor brings some much-needed Monday night comic relief to the Capital, proving that laughter really can be the best medicine. Expect jokes aplenty in a show with Kerry Godliman, Judi Love and Russell Kane, while Russell Brand brings his aptly titled show Brand-emic to the outdoor stage.

Social distancing (and a much longed for holiday for Daniel) necessitate a phone interview rather than a face to face meeting. “We’re down here in Devon, so forgive me if the line isn’t exactly right,” he explains. “I love London, but it’s been great to get out; it’s been so full on. You need that change of pace, don’t you? The home-schooling thing nearly broke me, so we just needed to get out… It’s been super.”

We’re catching up about his latest role, a leading part in Des, the ITV dramatisation of the case of notorious serial killer Dennis Nilsen. The three-part series tells the story through the eyes of both Nilsen’s biographer Brian Masters (played by Jason Watkins) and Daniel’s character, DCI Peter Jay, who was the detective responsible for his convictions.

“Dennis, who is played by David Tennant, was one of Britain’s most notorious, prolific serial killers, so it was very controversial subject matter, but no less compelling,” Daniel tells me, explaining the appeal of the project. “We had an amazing director in the form of Lewis Arnold, who is fantastic – up and coming and just an absolute breath of fresh air.

From my point of view it was just an amazing character to bring to life. I have obviously played quite a lot of policemen – I have literally cornered the market, haven’t I?” he laughs,

referencing parts in Line of Duty, Ashes to Ashes and most recently Code 404, to name a few. “But with it being such a brilliant true story it was really interesting to delve into,” he explains.

“Peter was an experienced policeman who had worked on murder cases before, but nothing could’ve prepared him and his team for the sheer evil that they encountered,” Daniel tells me. “It was an interesting exercise to see how policing worked in the early eighties, and how things like this affected the force. Because I guess their counselling was just to go down the pub and drink copious amounts of alcohol to get through it. It was a really huge case; the eyes of the world and the media were on them.”

Despite the horrific storyline, Daniel assures me that he thoroughly enjoyed the job, and even had some laughs on set. “I have often found that when you are dealing with a tough subject matter like this, a lot of the time you need to bring some levity on set just to get through it,” he explains.

I remember when I was doing Vera Drake years ago – you know, that’s about a backstreet abortionist – having such fun on set with Imelda Staunton. You have to balance it up; when you are in the scenes it is very intense, but then afterwards…

You know, that’s just me anyway, I’m not one of those method actors who stays in character all day, I have to just break it up a bit. Break the tension so to speak.”

The third eldest of four boys, Daniel jokingly attributes his career in acting to classic middle child syndrome. “My two older brothers were exceptional sportsmen, as was my younger brother. We were all sports mad and I don’t know if it was me trying to be different to my older brothers, to try and stand out… I went to stage school.” There was, of course, more to it than that. “Way, way back, when it all started for me was when my mum took me to see Michael Jackson in the Bad tour at Wembley,” Daniel explains. “And that became my thing.

I would go into my bedroom and meticulously perfect the dance moves. And it became my party piece. If Billie Jean came on at the school disco I’d be performing for my classmates. So that has always been in me, the notion to imitate something.

That need to perform.”

“Just the whole mechanics of going to the theatre and watching something is so important for people’s wellbeing. That’s what we’re talking about here.

The mental fallout from this lockdown has been tough for everybody.”

After stage school Daniel was awarded a place at RADA, and the rest, as they say, is history. “My trajectory in acting has been that lots of producers and directors have wanted to continue the working relationship,” Daniel says. “You know, I am always amazed to pick up the phone and for someone to say ‘Danny, I want you to play this role for me, and you don’t have to audition.’ It is always such an incredible sense of relief more than anything. I am actually blown away by it really.”

The call he’d really like to take, he says, would be from a theatre producer. “I would love to attempt some Shakespeare.

Certainly, I have done as much theatre as I have done TV, but I haven’t even done a play now for about four years, which is a hell of a long time. I have actually been learning the role of Macbeth, because a theatre director friend of mine has suggested that we look at it. I haven’t done it professionally for two decades and I feel like I have to get the monkey off my back. Do you know what I mean? So, we will see what happens. Of course, we have to get the theatres up and running again first…”

This is, naturally, something he feels very strongly about.

“If you can have restaurants opening that are socially distanced, then why not? I mean you have to start somewhere – if half, or a third of an auditorium is full at least that would be something. Just the whole mechanics of going to the

theatre and watching something is so important for people’s wellbeing. That’s what we’re talking about here. The mental fallout from this lockdown has been tough for everybody.

And we need things like this. Fine, you can watch Netflix or whatever on the telly, but I really miss going to the theatre, let alone being in a play myself. Hopefully that will come back sooner rather than later.”

While the future of theatre-going may be uncertain, things are moving in the right direction with television, Daniel tells me. “The second series of Code 404 will start filming in the middle of August, with series two of Temple starting after that finishes. We are obviously going to be filming within the constraints of COVID-19 and social distancing. As far as I am aware – we need to sit down and have a meeting – I think all of the actors and directors and script supervisors are going to be in their own bubble; the lighting department will be in their bubble and so on and so on. I think it will be lots of rules and regulations that we have to adhere to and see how we get on with it. Sky TV are adamant that these two shows have to be shot by the end of the year – because if we don’t, at the end of the day they are going to run out of content, aren’t they, that’s the worrying thing. Everything is being eked out at the moment to make it last, otherwise we are going to be watching repeats of The Darling Buds of May forever more,” he laughs.

Daniel has mixed feeling about going back to work. “We’ve been like this for four months or something, you’d think you’d be itching to get back, which I am, but it’s weird… we all adapt and get used to the circumstances we are in, so that you sort of get used to it, don’t you. I feel like I am a bit ring-rusty when it comes to going back and filming. It’ll be good that we are all in the same boat though.”

Daniel might’ve gotten used to the circumstances of lockdown eventually, but the beginning was tough. “We had a catastrophe because my poor wife broke her leg on Mother’s Day,” he reveals. We went for a walk and she slipped down a bank and snapped her ankle. It was horrendous, we heard it crack. So, from being really nervous about being around anyone, we then had to spend three hours in A&E! I felt like I’d been hit by a bus – not only was I home-schooling my daughter, my son was taking his mock exams upstairs and I was also looking after my bed-bound wife who could not do anything. I was like Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom; I was just completely knocked out by it,” he laughs. All things considered, back to work should be a doddle.

Things got delayed, naturally, but the concept did launch in August and reports are that it was well worth the wait. The event will now take place monthly with an ever-changing ten-course menu featuring dishes which do not appear on the regular à la carte and tasting menus. Deliveroo tell us that Primrose Hill dwellers favoured a Margherita from Pesantissimo; while those in Swiss Cottage couldn’t get enough of Honest Burger’s vegan PLANT burger and chips; for Maida Vale residents it was the salmon and avocado from Sushi Murasaki that got mouths watering; and in Marylebone, perhaps unsurprisingly, Le Relais de Venise l’Entrecôte’s ‘La Baguette’ and portion of fries topped the charts. Fusion cuisine isn’t a new concept, but we’re pretty sure we’ve never seen the combination of Japanese and Italian. That’s just what’s on offer at Tokyo Pizza, Maida Vale’s hottest new opening, though, and we can confirm it’s a winner. We say new, the underground spot actually opened earlier this year and almost immediately had to take a break over lockdown. It is now back up and running and has quickly established itself as a favourite among locals.

Think pizza bases made from Japanese blended flour topped with the likes of Wagyu Tataki; salads of teriyaki glazed burrata with enoki mushrooms and edamame; and mochi pancakes for pud. All served, naturally, alongside a selection of chilled sake. Fun and casual, with slick interiors, funky soundtrack and a speak-easy vibe, we think it’s a great addition to the neighbourhood – go check it out.

Long before lockdown, before so many of us Londoners unexpectedly found ourselves working from home, Fanny Rush was already planning a large, contemporary light-filled abode that would seamlessly merge her painting and living spaces. To the internationally renowned artist, a property that supports both work and relaxation offers a wealth of benefits – not least painting in your pyjamas when the mood takes you. Her contemporary residence, which she shares with her Labrador/Welsh Shepherd cross, Bear, was three years in the making – a passion project that saw an ambitious renovation of two adjoining properties. Fanny’s uniquely styled home naturally places artwork and sculpture centre stage but there are some intriguing antiques and exotic travel finds to discover, too.

What inspired the move?

My last home was a small third floor flat in Chelsea where I had been for seventeen years, and my studio was a Victorian laboratory in Fulham.

I was longing to live somewhere in which I could have some outside space to sit in the morning and drink coffee and watch all the wonderful flowers I’d planted come into bloom.

Talk me through the original footprint. It sounds complicated! It’s a newly built

property perched just behind the front of a 1930s pub – my part is where the pub car park used to be.

When I bought it the front was a retail unit with a big storeroom below, and behind was a one-bed flat on two levels with a terrace.

I kept the store-like windows at the front of the property because they provide excellent light in my studio.

Good light is very important, and not just for my work.

And how did you create the space you wanted? I knocked the

flat and the retail unit through on both levels, took out two staircases and made a new one going down to the lower level from a light shaft in the floor of the retail unit. I kept my bedroom where the previous one was and built a large bathroom surrounded by storage cupboards and wardrobes over the hole left by the staircases, incorporating the previous bathroom. This runs between my bedroom and the retail unit, which is now my studio!

How do you strike the right balance between work and living space? Do you find you’re able to fully shut off from your work? I paint in

the afternoons, and often into the evening after walking Bear.

Everything else is done in the morning. This routine fits much better here because I used to have a cold, lonely late night cycle home from my old studio. Now I just wash my brushes and go to bed.

AT HOME WITH There’s a big advantage to living and working in the same property.

I can look at the work as I walk through the studio when I’m not painting, and often I can quickly see why something I’ve been struggling with is wrong and put it right then and there – sometimes in my pyjamas first thing in the morning, and sometimes in my glamorous clothes coming in from an evening out.

How would you describe your interiors style? I think I

can sum it up by saying it’s full of contrasts: a very modern building with some very old pieces in it. The contrast of reds and greens; the white walls keep it simple but are contrasted with rich tapestries.

The renovations here took so much of my time and energy that I just decided to choose my favourite

colour combinations: dark pinks, purples and greens throughout.

I painted all the walls white, the whole floor with a soft purple gel paint, and I used dark wood in the building work.

Can you talk me through some of your best loved artworks, objects and travel finds?

Fanny dreamt of living in a space where she could drink coffee and watch all the flowers she’d planted come into bloom. Here she can do just that

Without really realising it I’ve been amassing metal or gilded sculptures of animals for years; these are in the living room section of the open-plan room on the lower floor. The kitchen and dining area is very modern so I had some of my favourite photographs blown

up to a very large size, printed and framed. I have a rule that I will not have anything in my environment that I don’t love, and that in itself is a theme that keeps everything working together. I don’t have favourite brands, just things that I can see will work, and everything has to be very well made. My brother, Joe Rush, is a sculptor and he made me the table, it’s made from car and tank parts.

One time when I was in Sydney, I was about to get into a taxi to the airport to come home. I didn’t really have time but I couldn’t resist nipping into an antiques market, where I spotted a nineteenth century metal articulated crayfish made in Japan. It was love at first sight. I have since been told that it is called a ‘masterpiece’, the piece an apprentice makes to qualify him to become a master.

Which room is your favourite?

My bedroom. One whole wall is floor-to-ceiling window and I bought the stained glass as a solution to gaining some privacy.

It was very old and needed to be completely re-leaded and made into panels. Fortunately my nephew, Bob, was at a loose end so I sent him on a stained glass making course and he did a beautiful job. We put some of the extra pieces of glass into the French doors between the bedroom and the bathroom, which works beautifully. fannyrush.com

We like to pick up organic ingredients from some of the many lovely grocery stores – Panzer’s delicatessen and Brown’s of St. John’s Wood are favourites. I also regularly visit Nature’s Healing Garden on the High Street. We like to experiment with healthy recipes and smoothies at home, so it is important that we pick up the best ingredients and these stores

always have a great selection.

We spend many happy hours walking our dogs in the beautiful parks that St. John’s Wood has to offer. My wife Margot likes to stop and get a coffee in GAIL’s before we walk our dogs in Regent’s Park.

It is such a beautiful park and we feel incredibly lucky that it is on our doorstep. We go a minimum of three times a week and it is a great place to decompress and take some quality time out from work.

The thing we enjoy most about living in St. John’s Wood is the

people, though. Everybody is so friendly; it’s rare to find such community spirit in the centre of London.

Is your child ready to return to school?

All being well, schools will fully reopen this month. But while parents may relish handing the mortar board back to teachers, children could be feeling jittery.

“There’s uncertainty at the start of any new school year,” says child psychologist Mike Hughesman.

“But this has been a very long period of disruption. Reality has undergone a quantum shift, and we shouldn’t underestimate the challenges that creates for children.”

For Mike, the first step is to recognise that risk, challenge and change are facts of life. As a parent, the best thing you can do is teach your children how to deal with them – by developing ‘a resourceful mindset’. Here’s how:

Be constructive. Children need to share their worries, but dwelling on problems for too long can reinforce them. Instead, spend more time discussing possible solutions. Engaging your child in an activity, like cooking or going for a walk, can help by giving them the space to share without overfocusing on their anxieties.

Encourage them to be proactive.

We usually respond to situations reactively. Being proactive is about choosing what that reaction will be.

Encourage your child to recognise what their first response is, then decide what they’d like it to be.

Help them to develop pro-social behaviour. We know from research that the people who cope best in a crisis spend time helping others. We also know that the children with a reputation for being understanding, caring and helpful are less likely to be bullied.

Encourage your child to be ‘the nice kid’.

Review the positives. Every evening, get your children to recall the positive things that happened during the day. They’ll develop ‘positive anchor points’ they can return to when they’re feeling low.

Finally, Mike suggests reinstating normal routines for things like bedtime and breakfast in the run-up to the new term. “Start rebuilding your child’s social networks, too,” he says. “Invite their friends round, chat to their parents and try to make early contact with their new teacher.

But remember, teachers have been through a lot as well. So be respectful, not critical, when you ask them how the school will ease the transition for your child.”

Coach Stay at Home Cricket St John’s Wood is home to Lord’s Cricket Ground. Why in your view is cricket such a great sport for kids?

For so many reasons! It’s an individual sport within a team sport, which means kids need to deal with personal disappointment while still contributing to the team. It builds strength, speed and stamina, as well as respect for each other, the opposition and officials.

And of course, it’s a great way to make friends.

What’s the story behind Stay at Home Cricket?

Back in March, I was playing cricket games with my 13-year-old son. I said, wouldn’t it be fun to record these games, so other kids can stay active with their families during lockdown? And the Stay at Home Cricket YouTube channel was born.

I started by posting one activity a day for 28 days, and followed that with a set of coaching cards to accompany the videos.

Why play at home now coaching and team cricket are back?

By September, the outdoor season is over. So unless your kids are at a school with great indoor facilities, they won’t have much chance to play until next summer. Stay at Home cricket means they can keep practising in the park, garden or even indoors, using a tray as a bat and rolled-up socks as a ball!

They’ll have fun while staying connected to the sport and building skills for the future.

St. John’s Wood is considered by many as the Capital’s most central suburb. Here you have the desirability of access to green space, and while you’re not quite in the thick of the West End, you can easily walk to town to shop or for an evening out.

And, of course, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to open spaces, with Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill adjacent on the south and east side. Then, to the north, you have Hampstead and its amazing Heath. It is a magical combination.

Have you seen any changes in what buyers are looking for since lockdown?

The effect of lockdown has left buyers looking for more outside space. Savills conducted a client survey in April that showed that 49 per cent of respondents said the amount of garden or outside space had become more important to

them as a result of COVID-19. That figure increased to 71 per cent for those under 40 who might have previously had to compromise on this particular feature when working their way up the housing ladder. Many homes in St. John’s Wood have lovely large gardens, as well as being close to good schools, making it an ideal location for families.
