FOOD & DRINK

Say cheese If your feelings about cheese are anything like ours, all your foodie dreams are about to come true, with a new opening from the team behind The Cheese Bar. Mathew Carver, known for championing the best of British cheese, is ripping up the rulebook with the world’s first cheese conveyor belt at the highly-anticipated Seven Dials Market (from the Capital’s leading street food organisation KERB). Opening this month, Pick & Cheese will offer a bespoke cheese experience: plate after plate of small producer cheese will wind its way around the restaurant atop a 40 metre-long belt, allowing diners to follow Mathew’s suggested tasting flights, or simply help themselves to the dishes that take their fancy. The cheese, all sourced from UK-based farms and urban cheesemakers, reflects Mathew’s continued passion for supporting small producers. Each will be paired with an individual condiment – from Coolea with hazelnut brittle, to fresh ricotta with sherry cherries – and handmade ceramic plates will be colour-coded to reflect different prices. There will also be a selection of British charcuterie from Tottenham’s Black Hand Food, and a handful of off-belt hot dishes including classic gooey grilled cheese sandwiches. Meanwhile a list of natural wines from Les Caves de Pyrene has been chosen to pair with the cheeses. Too gouda to be true? We hope not. Corrigan’s Mayfair Game Cookery Class With the Glorious Twelfth last month, game season is here. And one London chef who knows all about cooking with game is Richard Corrigan. “Apart from it being very tasty, there are so many reasons to eat game,” he says. “It’s wild! The most natural form of food straight out of the countryside, and it can be sourced locally so has a minimal impact on carbon footprint. Not only that, but the wild game industry plays a crucial role in managing the game populations in the UK. And it’s one of the healthiest meats

available – hormone-free and very lean, with an optimum ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids.” But how to cook it? The next monthly Corrigan’s Mayfair Cookery Class will feature all things game. Start the day with a light breakfast, before trying out a few game recipes for yourself with a little help from the experts. Afterwards, tuck into a delicious fourcourse lunch, with wines matched to each course. £250, 21 September. Corrigan’s Mayfair, 28 Upper Grosvenor Street, W1K (020 7758 4147; corrigansmayfair.co.uk)

When it comes to the climate crisis, we all know that there’s no Planet B. So, you’ve changed to reusable water bottles? Great, now it’s time to start addressing other sources of packaging waste. A recent report revealed that the UK generates a staggering 11 billion items of packaging waste from lunches and food on the go every year. Step up #longlivethelunchbox, a campaign from Global Action Plan to encourage restaurants and cafés to allow their customers to take food away in their own containers. So far, local businesses to sign up include Les Filles Café & Deli in Lancaster Gate and Hampstead; Temple of Seitan in Camden; Carcass LDN in Kings Cross; High Mood Food in Marylebone and the Island Poké sites in Soho and Fitzrovia. But there’s absolutely nothing to stop you taking your containers into anywhere else. We’ll be doing it in style with these colourful new S’nack by S’well pots, which are made from doublewalled, food-grade stainless steel, and vacuum insulated for maximum temperature retention. Plus, with threaded lids, they are guaranteed leakproof and are BPA/BPS-free. And with back to school on the mind, they’re perfect for good old fashioned packed lunches, too. From £20 at swellbottle. com. Find out more about the campaign at globalactionplan.org.uk
