The way we manage dry macular degeneration is changing, says Alex Kemp, third-generation optometrist and owner of independent opticians, The Eye Place. He explains the practice’s proactive approach to eye health Many of those reading this will already be aware of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), it will be affecting someone within two degrees of separation.* It is the biggest cause of irreparable sight loss in the UK, and it leads to the loss of the person’s central field of vision. It occurs when the macular (or central) retina develops degenerative lesions. Several forms of AMD exist within the sphere and several factors can drive the condition’s progression, however the main factor with all forms is the ageing process. The prevalence of marked AMD affects 4.8 per cent of people aged 65 years or over, and 12.2 per cent in people aged 80 years or over. Around one in every 200 people has AMD at 60, and by the age of 90 it affects one person in five. The two main ways of describing AMD are ‘Wet’ or ‘Dry’. Both types are detected using our deep eye scanning technology. Wet shows as LUXURY LONDON LIVING

fluid within the retinal tissues and Dry generally as lumps and bumps (drusen) within the retinal tissues. Dry AMD is the most common form and previously our ability to manage the progression had been limited, reduced to simply managing lifestyle factors, spectacle protection from more harmful blue light from the sun, diet, and the use of supplements. Wet AMD requires the earliest detection possible and requires an urgent referral to have intravitreal injections by an ophthalmologist. However, The Eye Place has now invested in the latest alternative technology to manage Dry AMD to help promote the stability of deeper macular retinal layers to help with the structure’s longevity. The Valeda light delivery system (LumiThera) is a non-invasive treatment utilising wavelengths of red, yellow and near infra-red light to rejuvenate the deeper macular pigmentary cells, in a process called photobiomodulation. The management of Dry AMD with LumiThera’s Valeda centres around promoting retinal stability and the subsequent tracking with our indepth retinal scanners (the OCT and Optomap) which have been a mainstay in our practices for many years. The addition of this treatment to our practices is building upon our clear philosophy of taking a more proactive approach to eye health. After all, a pair of spectacles is only as good as the eyes they are put in front of! Regular eye examinations are imperative for everyone, but especially for those over the age of 60 due to increasing prevalence of age induced eye related damage such as macular degeneration. Tuppence and I have had to rearrange our chat, which was scheduled for the morning of The Motive and the Cue’s West End press night, just days before Christmas. “Sorry for postponing yesterday; I had almost no voice,” she apologises, sounding only the tiniest bit husky when we do manage to sit down together the next morning. “It went OK though, I think… I managed to hold out my voice until the end of the show, and yeah, everyone felt quite good afterwards, I think. It’s always really hard to tell, because it’s always a bit chaotic on press night, but I’m quite looking forward to it just being open now. And just, you know, doing it as part of the normal run – it’s always kind of anxiety inducing, then once everything’s died down a bit you can truly relax.” This particular press night is a little bit different, though, because Tuppence and the rest of the cast have done it all before; directed by Sam Mendes, and starring Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton, Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud and Tuppence as Elizabeth Taylor, the show premièred at the National Theatre in spring 2023. Fierce and funny, the new play, written by Jack Thorne, is set behind the scenes of the 1964 Broadway production of Hamlet and offers a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room, and the relationship between art and celebrity. Highly critically acclaimed, it was named Best Play at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2023 in November, and it has now transferred to the Noël Coward Theatre for a strictly limited 15-week West End run. Interview / LIFESTYLE Things are a little different here though, Tuppence tells me: “It’s smaller on the actual stage, so it feels much more intimate, and we’re closer to the audience,” she explains. “The stage at the Lyttelton at the National Theatre is deep and wide, and the audience feels quite vast, whereas this really feels like you’re in a little chocolate box together – even though there’s a bigger capacity, it somehow feels more intimate. And so, some of the kind of two hander scenes feel much more accessible. And there’s a few things that have changed since the National, a few tweaks to different scenes, just to give it kind of more energy and vitality, and you really, I think, feel the dynamics between those characters much more clearly.” Telling me how she first heard about the role, Tuppence recalls receiving an email from her agent: “I had not long had a baby, so my head wasn’t really in a sort of ‘work space’ at that time, but just reading the email, you know, which said that Jack had written it, and Sam was directing it, and by that point Mark and Johnny were attached as well – it was just kind of a dream project.” Tuppence says that she went into the audition process, which was initially over Zoom because she was out of the country, believing that she wouldn’t get it, but seeing it as a good introduction back into world of work. “But I had a really nice reading with Sam,” she reveals. “He read Richard Burton, and then he said, ‘I loved the reading, and I’d just really like to see you in London, and maybe see you read with Johnny, and see how that feels.’ And so, I came back, read with Johnny, and yeah, it went great, and then Sam called me that same evening to see if I wanted to play Elizabeth. I felt very lucky to be in work so soon after having baby, especially work of that calibre.” Was it overwhelming to be thinking about returning to work? “I think having a baby gave me sort of a different sense of purpose and drive, and something to think about other than the little things,” Tuppence reveals. “I felt that it was a really nice thing that I was able to work so soon. And actually, when she was so small, she would go to sleep early in the evening, so it was the perfect time to be doing theatre, because I would be beginning at 7.30 when she was already in bed, and I would get to spend the day with her. It’s been great, and I was really pleasantly surprised, even though I shouldn’t have been, by the support from the National Theatre when we started rehearsing. They were so accommodating with regards to everything from childcare to breastfeeding, to you know, making sure that I felt looked after, so I was really in good hands, and so it felt like they made the decision very easy for me.” Perhaps the twentieth century’s most famous film star, Elizabeth Taylor was known for her soap opera-style personal life, glamorous beauty and magnetising screen presence – her life was certainly a world away from the one Tuppence was currently inhabiting as a first-time mother. “It was kind of interesting to have those two things play out at the same time,” Tuppence agrees. “But, at the same time it felt kind of connected – I suppose an embracing of womanhood. I feel like Liz is this ultimate sex symbol, and there was this power within her, the way she related to people and her sexuality, and so, it felt like a really nice time to be exploring someone like that.” Playing a real person brings its own challenges, in particular the need to be true to the script, while honouring the person in question. “It was important for us to stay loyal to the characters that Jack had written, which were so well researched, but also they had his magic touch, too,” Tuppence explains, “so we wanted to be loyal to that, and you know, not necessarily do a straight impression of these people, but to kind of bring the essence of them to the stage.” In search of that essence, she read everything she could find about not just Elizabeth, but Richard too, and their relationship. “There are a couple of great biographies actually – one that was only released a few weeks ago called Erotic Vagrancy – about Liz and Dick as a couple, and their journey together,” she tells me. “But there’s also, a lot of books about her, including her own autobiography, which I’ve read – it’s really nice to hear her own voice, because there’s so much written about them both, you know, on the good side and the bad side, so it was nice to just hear her talking about her life, and how she felt about all of the things that everyone knows so much about, but doesn’t necessarily know her opinion about.” Armed with her script, and her research, how does Tuppence go about channelling such an icon night after night, I wonder? LUXURY LONDON LIVING

“I always try to make a playlist of songs that make me think of, or feel like, the character that I am playing,” she tells me. “For Liz I’ve got some Persuasions, I’ve got some Etta James, The Exciters, The Stone Poneys, a bit of Joan Jett, Sarah Vaughan… I mean not all exactly the right era, but it’s just things that make me think of her. So, I always put that on as I’m getting ready, and I think there’s such a huge part of the costumes and the make up and hair that make me feel like her, because I’m physically not like her – apart from the fact that I have dark hair and I guess a similar complexion. You know, I’m quite tall, and she was, I think, just over five foot, and she was very famously voluptuous, which I’m not, so we kind of built this whole structure that goes underneath my costume, which pads out my hips and my bum, and then I’ve got padded breasts. So, it’s putting all of those things on, and recreating her very distinctive cat eye eyeliner flick, and her lipstick, and having her hair done. So much of that stuff that was important to Liz – the way she looked, and the way she presented, and the jewels that she wore… As I’m getting ready and listening to music, then that kind of slowly drops me into her mindset.” For Tuppence, this role marks not just a return to work after maternity leave, but also a return to the stage after a run of screen work, with recent roles including Hélène Kuragina in the BBC’s War and Peace, Fi Lawson in ITV thriller Our House, and Lucy Branson in the two Downton Abbey films. “Of course, when you’re at drama school, you train mostly for the stage, but I have professionally only done three plays,” she tells me. “It was never a choice that I didn’t want to do theatre, it was just how it went. I started auditioning for film when I first left drama school, my first two jobs were films, and then I suppose that’s sort of the way it started to go. You meet the producers or directors, or companies that are making film and TV, as opposed to auditioning for theatre as much, and then, because of that, you aren’t available, and you know then it’s kind of a cycle. It became such a long time since I had done theatre, I kind of built up this anxiety about doing it… But I think the really beautiful thing about having Sam directing us was that he is a master in both those worlds, so I felt I was in such safe hands, because you know that there aren’t that many directors who can direct both theatre, and film and TV, to the same kind of level. I can’t think of anyone more perfect to have helped me on that road. I have loved it so much; I’m desperate to do more now.” Evidently this job has provided an opportunity for professional growth, but I wonder if any personal lessons have been learned through playing Liz. “Well, it was so interesting reading so much about her, and the controversy around her at the time, around all of her marriages and her reputation,” Tuppence explains. “I think that of course she was larger than life, and she lived a very indulgent lifestyle, but I think she was also very smart and had a really big heart. It made me realise how important it is not to judge people, and I think that’s one of the biggest things she’s taught me. I think she could talk to anyone from any walk of life, and her heart was so open and non-judgmental. I think her power within was her security, I think she was very self-assured.” Self-assurance is something Tuppence is personally working on, in particular around having the confidence to speak openly about living with OCD; last year, she made a series for BBC Radio 4 about it. “I think I’m getting better at talking about it,” she tells me. “It’s a hard thing, because you’re really torn between talking about it, which is so important, I think, and something that I would have really appreciated when I was younger – to have read stories about other people who had it, or to hear their experience of it – but on the other hand, I mean, I think there’s so much about your life as an actor that grants the public access to you anyway, and that can be difficult. It’s a facet of my personality so I suppose it’s something that is interesting for people to hear about, so yeah, I’m trying to be better at talking about it, because I think it’s important.” In fact, she is currently writing a book about her experiences – a non-fiction novella: “a sort of immersive experience of how it feels to have OCD,” she explains. “I suppose it is, in essence,

Interview / LIFESTYLE “Of course, when you’re at DRAMA school, you train mostly for the STAGE, but I have professionally only done THREE plays. It was never a CHOICE that I didn’t want to do THEATRE, it was just how it went” a memoir, but you know, the idea for me of writing a memoir at the age of 36, when a large part of the population has no idea who I am, that kind of seems ridiculous, but then at the same time, it’s not really about me, per se… It felt like the best way for me to help people understand what it feels like, and also to talk about it in a concise way. Rather than having snippets here and snippets there in different articles – this way it’s all kind of out there in one place.” The book, which she has almost finished, will be published by Ebury, a non-fiction imprint of Penguin, although she is not yet sure when. Has she enjoyed the process? “I really love writing,” she nods. “I’ve also been adapting a Finnish book into a screenplay, that I plan to direct, if all goes well, and that’s a very different experience to writing prose. I find writing really calming. I’m, I think, naturally quite a solitary person, and I think that it gives me somewhere where I can truly switch my mind off, and be by myself, and just have a kind of sole focus, which I really like to do. Just to sit and be quiet. I find it really suits my temperament, so I’d like to do a lot more of it, if I can.” It’s hard to imagine when she finds the time for writing. “It’s weird,” she agrees. “I remember years ago, one of my friends saying to me that if you want something doing, ask a busy person. It’s so true, I mean there have been times in my life where I’ve been off work, or had time on my hands, and it almost seems impossible to get anything done, and then suddenly when life is chaos and there’s so many things going on, you’re much better

at managing your time. It’s a strange thing, you kind of become hyper focused – that’s what I found after having a baby, because then I started doing the play and I was writing the book and I was also working on the screenplay – all these things at once – and I just found I was so much better at organising my time. But I think it’s also important to do the opposite, and sometimes just completely switch off, because otherwise you go a bit mad.” Will there be an opportunity to switch off when The Motive and the Cue comes to the end of its run or is there more work lined up, I ask. “This takes me up until the end of March, and then it’s kind of wide open,” Tuppence shrugs. “I quite like that element of this job. I think I’ve never really known what I’m doing more than a couple of months in advance, and that’s always quite potentially nerve-racking, but I actually find it exciting, because your life can lead you anywhere – a call, or a self-tape, can suddenly change the course of your year, or your life…” In terms of lifechanging opportunities, I wonder what the dream role would be? “It’s always hard to say; I think that something can fall into your lap, and you have no idea that’s what you wanted to do, and suddenly it’s exactly the right thing. It’s always nice to do something different to the last thing that you did, otherwise you feel like you’re sort of repeating yourself, so I guess whatever the opposite of Liz Taylor is!” Exactly what that is remains to be seen. How do you sleep? Multi award winning Damaris Evans’ lingerie designs fall outside the long accepted norms

Loved by the fashion pack and celebrities alike, Damaris has revolutionised the lingerie landscape, she tells us a little about her creative process Tell us about your background – when did you first realise you wanted to design lingerie? One side of my family have been doctors for the last five generations and the other side are in the art world. My great grandfather, Sir William Rothenstein, was the principal of the Royal College of Art, with Henry Moore as his protégé, and my great uncle was the director of The Tate. As a child, I was surrounded by art on every wall in the house, which was a constant form of inspiration. Even the wallpaper in our hallway was rather dramatic and romantic. The print was deep shades of burgundy and rich browns, featuring a beautiful lady, nude with her hair falling around her, covering her in most parts. As a seven-year-old growing up with this, I was used to it. However, visiting school friends would be both horrified and fascinated by this at the same time, and the next day at school a comment of some kind was always made. Funnily, I recently revisited this childhood home, some 30 years later, and the new owners invited me in to have a look around. Amazingly, they had kept some of the wallpaper and had it framed, now hanging as a piece of art on the wall in the hallway. 46 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | February 2024

I really shouldn’t have specialised in lingerie as I was to be a fashion designer, but I began experimenting. I put little handprinted silk knickers under the dresses for my final degree show at Central Saint Martins. There was something wonderful about creating this tiny piece of art that was small and magical and made people giggle or smile when they put it on. It was too much fun to stop there. Where does your inspiration come from? It comes when I stop working and go away to see family, visit friends at their houses, go on a walk or, if I’m lucky, go on a holiday. As soon as I stop, my mind soaks up its surroundings and relaxes. Within hours, I am bursting at the seams, desperate to get to my desk and start drawing. Tell us a little about your creative process from concept to realisation – what do you enjoy most? Once the concept is born, the process of construction ticks through my mind in a matter of seconds. Fashion / LIFESTYLE especially in lingerie. To be a designer as well as a pattern cutter, and to be able to sew, enables you to understand the full process. Each design idea that runs through my mind has to tick all of the boxes of design and construction, and not only to fit, but to be comfortable and wearable. All these processes come to mind in a matter of seconds and if they don’t work, I think of another design. Once the magical seamstresses make the garments, the excitement begins. That’s when you see the first sample and, as I like to say, if it makes me ‘ooh’ or ‘aah’, or simply smile, then I know it’s a good one! Can you tell us about the role of sustainability in your work? At present, I am working on my second collection with Marks & Spencer, called BOUTIQUE X DAMARIS, which will be out in early 2024, with edits dropping throughout the year. Sustainability is imperative in its manufacture. I am pleased to say that suppliers these days use sustainability as standard. It’s a given that high quality lingerie requires high levels of sustainability – from fabrics to manufacture. What do you want people to feel when they are wearing your lingerie? My designs always bring a smile, that’s the first point of difference, but you can also wear my designs comfortably all day. I regard them as hugely wearable but also cult cool with a sense of humour.

Your designs have been worn by some of the world’s most famous faces – who would you most like to see wearing your lingerie? It’s always exciting to hear that someone as incredibly famous as Angelina Jolie, as hilarious as Amy Schumer, or as influential as Kendall Jenner is wearing your work, but what I really love is being at a dinner party and meeting someone who knows my work and is wearing it that night! What are you most proud of when it comes to your career? To have enjoyed every minute of it, not just the good times, winning awards or meeting the Queen to celebrate British design, or holding fort in the world’s best stores for 20 years. Before my luxe brand Damaris lingerie, which has been sold in 350 exclusive stores worldwide, there was no such thing as a bow-back knicker and the world had never heard of bottom cleavage or a corset knicker! When Selfridges stocked my luxury lingerie collection, including the iconic star knicker, they found themselves with a waiting list for underwear for the first time in their 112-year history. One magazine even reported at the time that Liv Tyler was allegedly fighting at the till at Samantha Rodricks’ lingerie store, eager to get her hands on some of my designs. What I would say is that I feel very lucky to have found what I love to do, every day. To be the first fashion designer to bring high fashion to lingerie and still come up with the goods season after season. I’d be lost without design and will never retire. I couldn’t think of anything worse than not being at my desk early on a Monday morning. What advice would you give to somebody wanting to buy lingerie as a gift this Valentine’s Day? I wouldn’t give specific advice. We all have such different ideas of what lingerie as a gift on Valentine’s Day should be. Is it the giver giving for themself, or the giver giving for the receiver? Maybe you want something chic and smart, or something silly and throw away. Think about the person and what would make them smile. What’s next for Damaris Evans? High fashion lingerie is in my DNA and although the Damaris brand is not currently in stores, I am constantly creating collections in my sketchbooks, ready for the next step. While I can say that there have been discussions with a major luxury house, I can’t at this stage confirm whether that next step will mean me joining as creative director, heading up its lingerie division or indeed launching a collaborative collection. What I can say is that I am very optimistic about the future and promise that Damaris high fashion lingerie will be back. Claude Bosi’s red velvet Madeleines February marks the first birthday of Michelin starred chef Claude Bosi and restaurateur Samyukta Nair’s Mayfair bistro, Socca, where Madeleines are a perennial favourite on the menu

Celebrating its anniversary on the 14 February, Socca is a love letter to the French Riviera, and in particular the coastal towns of Cannes, Marseille and Nice. Here, Michelin-starred chef Claude has crafted a delicate, simple menu that is seasonal to its core, where comforting dishes are elevated with refined skill. And the whimsically rustic setting more than matches the food – think scallop shell wall lights, hand painted lampshades, a vintage mirror-backed bar and terracotta plant pots on windowsills. All of which makes it the ultimate spot for a romantic meal: a great choice for a special Valentine’s date. If you manage to get a sought-after table on the night,

we recommend the delicious lamb shoulder, which is designed for sharing; a Socca staple, it is slow cooked until the meat falls off the bone and served with an exquisite Niçoise sauce. And for dessert, Madeleines, of course. These delicate shell-shaped cakes are on the menu at Socca year-round, though regular diners have come to expect seasonal adaptations. We particularly loved the honey Madeleine, served with shavings of white truffle and Pedro Ximénez vanilla ice cream that featured on the menu of the ‘Socca Seasons: Truffles’ dinner last November. For Valentine’s Day, Claude has created this gorgeous red velvet version, and we managed to persuade

INGREDIENTS

• 360g plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 50g cocoa powder • 2g salt • 120g unsalted butter • 400g caster sugar • 220g vegetable oil • 3 eggs • 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 220g butter milk • 20g milk • approx 2 tsps red food colouring

METHOD

1. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. 2. In a bowl, mix together the remaining dry ingredients. 3. Add the eggs to the creamed sugar, one at a time. 4. Next, add the vegetable oil, vanilla and colouring. 5. Fold in 1/3 of the dry ingredients followed by 1/3 of the buttermilk and repeat this step 2 more times. 6. Rest the mixture in the fridge for at least 4 hours. 7. Pipe into Madeleine moulds and cook at 175 degrees for approximately 15 minutes.

Aqua Nueva

A new executive chef brings fresh Spanish flavour to this buzzy West End favourite Words by Liz Skone James I am not a good sharer, never have been, though these days I’m more likely to be found keeping expensive cosmetics to myself than toys (hands off the Aromatherapy Associates bath oils, kids). There’s a notable exception though – food. I am famously indecisive when faced with a menu, preferring to keep my options open and team up with others to order a few things for the table, thus allowing a taste of several dishes. It took my other half years to get over his (unnecessary) embarrassment at the consequent portioning up and plate swapping, and even now he doesn’t always indulge my preference to share. Of course, there are cuisines that positively encourage this type of eating, which is why you’ll often find me choosing to eat at tapas restaurants. And a favourite spot to indulge my Spanish cravings is Aqua Nueva, part of restaurateur David Yeo’s acclaimed Aqua Restaurant LUXURY LONDON LIVING

from the kitchens of Barcelona’s three Michelin-starred ABaC – thanks to a menu that marries Mediterranean traditions with a modern sensibility and the highest quality produce, this is widely considered to be one of Spain’s finest restaurants. I’m told that Mateo has distilled his experience at ABaC into his own cooking ethos, as demonstrated in the menu he has designed for Aqua Nueva. The restaurant is as spectacular as I remember; barrel-vaulted ceilings, beautiful tiling, soft leather seating, warm lighting and a palette of earthy tones with gold accents give the space an intimate, Moorish vibe. It is a Tuesday night, but most of the tables are full, and the room is buzzing as we are shown through to our seats at a cosy circular booth in the centre of the room. As well as introducing new dishes to the à la carte menu, Mateo has designed a series of special menus that will change seasonally, showcasing his home country and its cuisine. When we visit, the special menu is inspired by Spain’s Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafrán, an annual celebration of saffron, the ‘red gold’ of Spanish cuisine. It all sounds divine, but features just one starter, one main and one dessert, rather than the small plates concept I so love. With this in mind, we decide to supplement our à la carte tapas

choices with the saffron-themed starter and dessert. And we begin with the Saffron Fiesta, a delicious saffron-infused Calvados, ginger syrup and orange bitter cocktail. First up, exquisite mouthfuls of crab with green apple and pickled chilli on crispy tostada that leave us wanting more. We are soon satisfied on that front – in typical tapas style the dishes come as they are ready, so we enjoy a steady stream of tasty plates, each more beautifully presented than the last. Manchego croquettes flavoured with an indulgent hint of truffle; juicy red prawns with star anise and sofrito cream on rice crisps; pork tenderloin with green pepper cream; and crispy, skin-on cod brandade with Seville orange – everything is exquisite. The saffron All i Pebre is Mateo’s contemporary take on a traditional Valencian dish – smoked eel and pumpkin are served with a gorgeously aromatic saffron bisque. SCOTTISH SOLITUDE A tiny cabin in the heart of a remote Scottish Glen overlooking Ben Nevis provides the ultimate setting for an off-grid Highlands escape Words by Katie Hutley Ways to mark yourself out as a Londoner, part one: arrive in Scotland in the middle of November with a non-waterproof coat. Or that’s to say… the most waterproof one you own, it’s pretty thick actually and I’m sure it’ll be OK if the rain doesn’t get any heavier than this? Or, so you babble on to Edith, the charming owner of the Inverskilavulin Estate, where you’ve just arrived for an off-grid break. Edith’s kindly smile, and offer to lend me something more Highlands-appropriate, suggests I’m not the first clueless guest to have stayed here. ‘Here’ being Frances’ Sketch Pad, a tiny cabin on a hillside with views towards Ben Nevis, that comprises part of the Estate – essentially, a collection of four rental properties along with the owners’ family home – for which the words ‘small but perfectly formed’ were made. The tour of the cabin doesn’t take long – it’s an open plan studio – yet, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that more or less comprise the entire length of the wall, the feeling is one not just of space, but of vast expanse; the view of ancient, mystical forests at the foothills of the mountains just the other side of the valley, tracing their way up the hillside towards the peaks, is one I can’t take my eyes off. Indeed, so starstruck am I that I have the overwhelming desire to open my eyes wider than is humanly possible, just to take the scale of it all in. It seems, in fact, that all of this Scottish beauty and fresh air does have a most uncharacteristic effect on my physical self – whilst my eyes LUXURY LONDON LIVING

reluctantly remain at their usual capacity, I set off (newly kitted out in Edith’s coat) on a walk which, to my astonishment when I return back and review my route, has encompassed nearly six miles. Not an Olympian achievement, admittedly, but try telling the southern softie who’d arrived fresh off the Caledonian Sleeper just that morning that she’d cover the distance from the Heath to Mill Hill without giving it a second thought, and you’d have received a more-than-raised eyebrow in return. It also offered another moment of amusement for my indulgent host, when I expressed disappointment that I wouldn’t be able to follow a route I’d spotted on my drive in, due to it being gated with an “official-looking” Forestry and Land Scotland sign on it; clearly, off-bounds to the public. She gently explained that, with a very few exceptions, the land in Scotland is free to be roamed by whoever wishes to do so, gate or no gate; I have never felt so acutely English in my assumption of ‘knowing my place’, and gave a William Wallace-esque inward cry of “Freedom!” as I unbolted that gate. Upon my return, exhilarated, soaking and admittedly creaking somewhat, I was delighted to make long, languorous use of the hot tub, a piquant experience as my skin pinkened from the combination of hot water and freezing air. I’d hired a car for my stay and took in some breathtaking scenery as I sped along from Glenloy to Glencoe the next day, a route made famous most

recently in Skyfall but familiar to anyone as one of the Highlands’ most iconic. Lunch at the Clachaig Inn was superb and hearty – even this appetite couldn’t clear the plate – and the drive back took in a stop at the Ben Nevis Distillery, where I will admit to a purchase or two having been made. Back at base, with the wood burner roaring, I sat and savoured a glass or two of my spoils, gazing out across the hills that the water that had made it (and the peat that had flavoured it) had run through, and fell truly, profoundly in love with this beautiful country. Was it just the whisky? The return trip I am already planning will tell.

Elliot and Amy worked with Rees Architects to give their London terrace a bold, contemporary update

It’s hard to imagine Elliot and Amy’s home in its previous incarnation, such is the success of the renovation. The young couple enlisted London-based Rees Architects to create an ambitious ground floor rear extension that would transform the property into a design-led, contemporary home that celebrates light and space – whilst maintaining elements of its original period charm. Built in 1895, it was a classic Victorian terrace, and by all accounts, needed some TLC when the pair took it on in 2021. Elliot describes the house then as “liveable, not a complete wreck, but the bathrooms hadn’t been updated since the mid2000s, and the kitchen looked like it was from the ’90s – warped vinyl flooring, holes under the skirting filled in with wire wool (to keep rats out!), horrible laminate cupboards with child locks on each door…” It’s fair to say the kitchen has been reconfigured beyond recognition.

Elliot, CFO for Palace Skateboards and Amy, who does legal for JW Anderson, came to the architecture practice with a clear brief: along with a top-to-toe redecoration, they wanted a bespoke extension that would maximise kitchen and dining spaces; a reconfigured bathroom; and a designated utility area that would double up as a cosy nook for their two lively dachshunds. In what was once a dark and dysfunctional middle room sits a built-in dog crate underneath bespoke joinery, while noisy appliances are kept away from the main kitchen/ living space, and now the couple proudly have a designated spot to store coats and shoes, keeping unwanted clutter away from the hallway – an undisputed game changer. “It’s a very neat and aesthetically pleasing solution,” Elliot tells me, “and the dogs love it as a little snug”. The house features a wealth of richly textured natural materials in a satisfying blend of creams, browns, blacks and greys, and while there are elements of the stark and hardedged, Elliot and Amy’s home is nothing if not warm. You could describe the look as Japandi – calming, casual and organic. I wonder how much of this was the couple’s vision, or was it wholly designer-led? “It was a bit of both,” Elliot explains. “We had a lot of reference images, but would’ve found it difficult to extract details from all of these and apply it to the space in the way that Rees did. Ultimately, one of the core reasons why we chose Rees was down to the common aesthetic of their previous projects, which aligned with our taste. They were able to easily distil our requirements into a design that didn’t fundamentally change as we went through the project, which is testament to the strength of the underlying design principles.” Such a bold reconfiguration of living spaces has vastly improved the flow of the property and this, in turn, has had a positive effect on the couple’s day-to-day experience. “It’s all moved to the rear of the house,” Elliot says. “We probably spend 80 per cent of our time in here outside of work. We can prep and eat food, watch TV, listen to music, or read in the abundance of LUXURY LONDON LIVING

natural light that comes in. Now, the traditional living room at the front is used more for special occasions, or as a space to relax with a drink, as it serves as a more ‘smoking room’ type space with its ornate, traditional features, and ambient lighting.” On the subject of light, the property is playfully designed to welcome natural daylight in at every conceivable angle. “The natural light is one of our favourite features of the extension,” Elliot tells me. “The roof light above the dining table is almost church-like and draws you to look up at the sky. It’s a relatively narrow pane, which results in really interesting shadows moving around the room as the sun moves throughout the day. The same can be said for the side return panes, which let an abundance of light through and create warm patches on the ash floor – which is where you’ll usually find the dogs basking!” Some of Elliot’s stand-out features here include the dramatic marble waterfall worktop, which takes centre stage in the contemporary, wraparound kitchen space. “It’s an exceptional piece of stone,” he says. “One that you couldn’t recreate in a factory. Despite the impracticality of using this type of material next to your hob (note etching from oils!) the effect, as the first thing you see when you walk into the room, is very impactful.” He also loves the bold external metal cladding, an unapologetically industrial addition that creates contrast and dark drama. “This was originally going to be untreated lead, which would naturally patina over time, however we opted for a powder-coated steel in the end, which is more resilient to the elements and looks just as crisp now as it did when it was first installed a year ago.” A triumph in form and function, the light-filled contemporary extension and refurb has given new life to Elliot and Amy’s period abode. I don’t even need to ask which is Elliot’s favourite space here. “It has to be the open-plan kitchen/living room,” he says. “It’s completely changed the way we live in the house – there’s no reason not to cook now that we have all this space. But I also have to give a special shout out to the utility room, which now houses all that extra ‘stuff’.” rees.archi LUXURY LONDON LIVING

Tell me about Our Place and how the brand came about When we immigrated to the US, my husband and I literally found our place in our new community by inviting friends to our dinner table, making a meal, and sharing our stories. We’ve always believed that cooking at home, and sharing it with people you love, is at the centre of a joyful, healthy, connected, and vibrant life. When we started Our Place, we knew it was about so much more than kitchenware. We wanted to create a place that brought people together to celebrate traditions and create new ones. We knew we wanted to work with sustainable materials and female artisans. We also knew that whatever we made, it had to make cooking more approachable and less cluttered. Simpler. Because when you have the right tools, cooking at home is beautiful. What were you doing beforehand? Before starting Our Place, I co-founded the Malala Fund to help girls around the world access education. I also started an angel fund investing in mission-driven start-ups, and travelled around the world speaking on social entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment, and the power each of us has to create lasting and meaningful change. How would you sum up your design ethos? At Our Place, we design products that make it easier, and more joyful, to cook at home. Our products are designed to be displayed, never tucked away in cabinets, because they are beautiful objects. They’re also highly multi-functional, with almost 200 patents across our portfolio and creative innovations in kitchenware, so you can do more with less and whip up a meal, hassle-free.

How has home cooking in Pakistan influenced what you do now? My parents were deeply passionate about giving my siblings and I a strong education so we could have every opportunity to pursue our dreams. When I moved halfway across the world to study in the US, I missed my mother’s cooking and started learning to cook. It was eye-opening for me to see how much of the rest of the kitchenware industry was designing outdated products that made cooking harder. It inspired me to create products that are better for you and better for the earth we share. Tell me about the role of sustainability at Our Place Sustainability is deeply important to all of us because we know planet Earth is our only place! While most cookware companies use PTFE/PFAS (forever chemicals) to make their non-stick coatings, we’re pioneering toxin-free coatings and we’re challenging the industry to remove PFAS from their products. We also make our Always Pan from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled materials, and package our products in fully biodegradable materials, designed to minimise waste. What do customers love most about the products? Our customers love the design and colour of our products. Our range is so beautiful that it inspires you to cook more! Customers also love that they can trust that the materials we use are toxin-free, so they know they’re cooking with a healthy and safe product for themselves and their loved ones. And they love how every detail of our product is considered, big or small, each decision makes the range more multi-functional, leading to easier cooking. What’s next for the brand? We have some very exciting launches planned for next year. Having transformed the cookware category, we’re bringing the same design ethos to dinnerware, prep and even electrics. The pastoral life of RMS has long been recognised as a particular area of strength. We invest more time and resources than most schools into personal support for all students. Sport, performing arts and creative arts all help greatly as healthy outlets for stress. The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at Durham University has been recording this since 1983. They do it by running baseline tests at ages 11, 14 and 16 and using the 40 years of results gathered to give each child a scarily accurate predicted grade for every subject they study. They then standardise each school’s actual results to tell us how far above or below their predicted grade a student achieves, compared to a student of the same profile at another school. From all this, CEM can prove how much value every school adds academically. Results in 2023 indicated that RMS is in the top 10 per cent of all independent schools in the UK and in the top 8 per cent of all schools in the UK.
