Fabric is 21 this month – a fact that fills me with equal parts pride and horror. Pride that our little magazine has stood the test of time, and is now bigger and better than ever before. And horror at the realisation that 2001 is, indeed, 21 years ago – indisputable evidence that I am getting old. I’m choosing to focus on the former emotion, and concentrate on celebrating this rather special milestone. To mark our big birthday, we’ve taken a look at how the property market has changed over that period, and we’ve uncovered some of the homes and interiors brands that also launched in 2001. Continuing the celebrations theme, this issue is our wedding special – after two years of restrictions, we couldn’t be more excited that big dos are back with a bang.

We asked five London-based experts for their tips on throwing a stylish shindig. Finally, our cover star this month is the talented and utterly fabulous Joséphine de La Baume. Here’s to many happy returns…

Single Sex Education – is it right for my child?

Evidence shows that girls who study at single sex schools outperform those who attend co-ed schools, and the advantages don’t end there Co-education versus single sex has long been a dilemma faced by families looking for the best fit for their child.

While many single sex schools have recently taken the bold step into co-education, there is no escaping the fact that girls who are educated in a single-sex environment consistently outperform those who attend mixed schools.

The Department for Education’s School Comparison data for England shows that this is true at both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 (aged 14 to 18) and that at A Level, girls in girls’ schools scored a weighted average point score of 40.7 per entry, compared to the average score of 32.8 in co-ed schools.

Elaine Purves is Head of Queen Anne’s School, a top day and boarding school for girls in Berkshire. Now in her fourth headship, Elaine has a wealth of experience and shares her perspective on the benefits of the single sex environment for the girls in her care.

It is widely accepted that girls are more free from gender stereotypes in a single-sex setting, something that is often reflected in STEM subjects where girls in girls’ schools are 2.5 times more likely to take Further Maths and Physics compared to girls in other schools. “At Queen Anne’s we certainly see this trend with 50 per cent of all A Levels taken in STEM subjects (2018-2021) and 40 per cent of Sixth Form leavers going on to study a STEM subject at University (2018-2021),” says Elaine.

Feedback from students, parents and staff in girls’ schools suggests that many female learners are more relaxed in an environment they see as less judgemental, unencumbered by gender-conformity. A Sixth Form parent at Queen Anne’s vouches for the approach, commenting: “I look at my daughter leaving Queen Anne’s as a confident, but very modest, compassionate, strong leader, who feels comfortable going on to the next stage of her life – and that’s all you can ask for.”

There is no doubt that boys and girls learn in different ways, so girls’ schools don’t feel the pressure to compromise on learning systems and techniques in the same way that other schools might. “All girls’ schools are tailored to allow a child to throw themselves into school life. Girls are more likely to participate and excel in competitive activities such as athletic sports, too. And the pastoral care that students receive in single-sex schools tends to be more focused. Girls feel happier in an environment they sense is designed for them. As we all know, children who are happy and secure are more likely to thrive both now and in the future,” Elaine concludes.

13 April-14 May, Niru Ratnam Gallery Having enjoyed a stellar career that included the Venice Biennale, the Tate Triennial, and even a spot on the Turner Prize shortlist, in 2013, Ataman turned his back on the art world. “I left both London and Istanbul, moved back to my ancestral land in deep Eastern Turkey, and focused on human struggle, on our relationship with nature, not only about what goes on in greater society but also at a personal level,” he says. Spread over two Soho art spaces, this is Ataman’s first solo show since that dramatic exit. At the Ganton Street gallery, The Stream is a thought-provoking work, which consists of a pyramid structure of twenty televisions, offering themes of rethinking and reconstruction, while over at Denham Place, Ataman will show photographic work from his new series Other Planets, which looks at the societal oppression of subject positions deemed ‘other’ by authorities.

Joséphine de La Baume begins our interview with an apology.

“This is my second language, and I’m like, am I being clear?”

She explains. “So, I end up making things more complicated with long winded answers.” Of course, like so many Europeans, her English is impeccable. And her answers, it transpires, are perfectly pitched.

The French actress, musician, songwriter and film director grew up in Paris, but has lived in London for many years.

“I love living in London, but I always miss Paris. Then, when I am in Paris, I also miss London, so I guess I am never satisfied,” she laughs. “One of the best things about London is Londoners – I just really like English people, they don’t take themselves so seriously, which is not the case in France. But I miss my grumpy French friends when I am away!”

Any homesickness is countered with regular trips back to Paris for work and to see family and friends – pandemic and Brexit notwithstanding. “Brexit is making things even more difficult! As if COVID wasn’t enough…” she sighs. When she can, she manages to mix work and play, particularly when it comes to her music – along with her brother Alexandre she fronts achingly cool Parisian garage punk group Film Noir.

The band are releasing their second album this year, Joséphine tells me, explaining that recording happened in London last year, during “one of the many lockdowns”. The restrictions proved to be something of a blessing. “The band came over from Paris and had to isolate. And after that they didn’t leave the studio for 10 days or two weeks,” Joséphine recalls. “We were in a bubble, basically, all together, and it gave us a sense of urgency… frustration at times, which worked very well with the energy in some of the songs. And I think, also, we became almost one, in a way, being so on top of each other for so long. You can sense it in some songs, too, where it is quite ethereal.” Coupled with the fact that the band couldn’t go out in the evenings and enjoy the London nightlife, it proved the perfect environment for productivity. “That was beneficial,” Joséphine laughs. “We had to be disciplined!”

So, what can we expect from this latest work? “Each song is almost like a little novel about a character,” Joséphine suggests.

“Sometimes it is cinematic, and sometimes it is a bit more mythological. They are basically heroes, or sometimes antiheroes who are experiencing a moment of crisis. Or they are at a big turn in the road, a life changing moment. Sorry, my English is not doing it justice…”

The album, which is due to be released in June, is being produced by Ben Romans-Hopcraft of cult British bands Insecure Men and Fat White Family, and is currently at the mixing stage. “We’re working with Orla Carey, who is a 17-year-old English girl,” Joséphine tells me. “She is incredible.

I sometimes forget that she is so young, and then I get an email saying she has to go to school and that she will finish the mix in a few days, and I’m like: Oh gosh, she is 17! She is a prodigy.”

For Joséphine, songwriting is a cathartic experience. “I don’t really know how to not make it personal when I write music, because I do feel like it is a little bit of a diary – in the lyrics as well as in the music,” she explains. It helps, then, that she is working with somebody who knows her as well as Alexandre does. “We are very close and share a very deep understanding of each other. I’m not scared to show him my emotions. So, when we write together, I think it is very complementary, but it is also with great understanding of where the other one wants to go.”

That the music is so personal is perhaps why she finds it hard to listen to when others are around. “I could never sit and stare at somebody while they are listening to me rambling about my life. No, definitely, I can’t!” She states, emphatically. Fortunately, she has none of those concerns where live shows are concerned.

“I love performing,” she exclaims. “I just came back from touring with La Femme, a French rock band, and that was really fun.

You know, it is immediate, and it is a capsule in time. It’s not like a movie where you can just do another take, and another take, and another take. It is just right here, right now. And it is especially good when we have spent so much time away from one other, to suddenly be all together in one place having one experience. You don’t take it for granted anymore.”

There are more live shows to look forward to, Joséphine reveals. “We are opening for La Femme in London on the 21 April at the O2 Kentish Forum. And we are now scheduling another date, which will be just our show, around the same time in London. We will play a couple of shows here, and then we will play in France after that. We have festivals this summer as well.”

When Joséphine is not immersed in the world of music, she can invariably be found performing in front of the camera. And though acting and singing are quite different disciplines, they are very much complementary, she tells me. “The one thing they have in common is that you have to move away from the fear of being quite naked with your emotions. If you are not comfortable with that, it will be hard to give a truthful performance.”

She can currently be seen in the long-awaited new series of Ronan Bennett’s gritty but riveting crime drama, Top Boy, which launched on Netflix in mid-March. It is a project she is excited to be involved with. “I watched all of the previous series. And then I watched them again before I started filming,” she tells me.

“I love it and I feel very excited and honoured to be a part of it.

The cast is incredible. Everything about it is exciting.”

At the time of our interview, the new episodes are still under embargo, so Joséphine is tasked with promoting the show without revealing anything about it, or, indeed, her own role. “I have to find ways of talking about it without revealing anything, which is a peculiar game!” She laughs. “What I can say is that my

character has gone through very difficult life challenges, and she tries to channel it in a positive way. When people experience tragedies, they try to make sense of it. But often you just can’t. So, that was a very interesting thing to explore within a character.”

Fans will also be able to see Joséphine appearing in the second series of ITV’s Grace later this month. From acclaimed screenwriter and Endeavour creator, Russell Lewis, Grace is an adaptation of international bestselling author Peter James’ award winning novels, and stars John Simm as Brighton-based Detective Superintendent Roy Grace.

“My character is a very manipulative, quite evil woman, really,” Joséphine reveals. “It is always fun to play a villain, you know. It is also quite an interesting challenge to play somebody who does things on planet Earth that you would never imagine yourself capable of. In order to deliver an honest and genuine performance, you have to relate to that character one way or another. And it is sometimes really difficult to do that, because the character goes to places that are so horrible, or evil, that you couldn’t imagine how somebody could do something like that.”

Joséphine does this by working on the backstory, she tells me.

“You have to work out why they got there. How they got to that place. Maybe in there you can find something that you can relate to. You might not turn into the same person, but you might be

able to understand what got them to this point. What level of desperation, or insecurity…”

For Joséphine, this process involves interpreting the script to imagine the character’s entire life story. “We are a mixture of our traumas, our fears, our goals, but also the way we love, the way we were brought up, the way we experience life… That stays with you whatever happens,” she explains. “There will be elements in the script, and of course that is going to be part of it, but I always try to mentally recreate a character’s life story, retracing from childhood up to the point where they are now, so that when I arrive on set, I am pretty much immersed in the character’s life.”

The nature of filming means that this is important even with more straightforward characters. “It is difficult when you film, because it is never chronological. You are kind of cutting from one scene to another. Jumping from page one to page 10, and then coming back to page five all in one day,” she explains.

“And you are going through a range of different emotions and events, and backtracking the past, so you have to know the emotional arc of the whole script, so that you can land on each scene knowing where you are at.”

With this knack for embellishing stories, it is no surprise to hear that Joséphine has been channelling her creativity to write her own scripts. “I started writing a TV show, which I am developing at the moment. I wrote a French feature, and I wrote a TV show in English, so I am developing those,” she reveals.

“I find that the more I do, the more I want to do. I quite like being in a sort of work frenzy. I find that I almost clone myself, managing to do more and more. It is often the case that when you don’t have much to do, one thing can feel like a mountain, but when you are doing a lot, you manage to do much more than you thought you were capable of.” Indeed, she wouldn’t have it any other way, and we’re quite grateful for that.

In the wise words of Yves Saint Laurent: “Fashions fade, style is eternal”. Wedding planner Rebecca Brennan-Brown tells us she often gets asked how to ensure you don’t look back on your wedding and hate the pictures. “This is an entirely

understandable concern, you’re spending a lot of money, so the good memories should last. My Aunty Katie went for the incredibly bold choice of a pink dress with a matching top hat (in the 80s, sleeves ’n’ all). You best believe she hates it now,” she laughs.

The wedding industry is full of choice. It’s an industry which is constantly evolving. So how do you ensure your wedding design is timeless in such a fast-paced world?

Here are Rebecca’s top tips

01. TIMELESS TO YOU

03. USE MODERN TWISTS ON TRADITION

I firmly believe that a wedding should reflect who you both are as people, as well as your future life together. You may love something that other people dislike, and that’s OK. If you’re unsure what you like, start by taking a look at your home décor and wardrobe. Do you generally play it safe? If so, you should begin with a reasonably simple wedding design and develop from there.

Or perhaps your style is much darker; an autumn wedding might be perfect for you. Don’t feel any pressure to be something you’re not.

Some classics will always be timeless and traditional, and that’s not something to be scared of. I can guarantee that you’re thinking of a white dress, red roses and a church when I say traditional wedding. Or perhaps a stately home, three-course meal and first dance. Whilst these elements are all very established, adding modern twists gives you the best of both worlds. For example, let’s look at roses – perhaps the most classic wedding flower and incredibly timeless. Reflexed roses (where the petals are flipped outwards) are astonishingly popular at the moment and give this traditional flower a much more contemporary, stylish look.

You don’t have to choose one or the other when it comes to modern or traditional. You can wear a ball gown in the day and a jumpsuit in the evening.

You can get married in a church but have your reception in a warehouse. You can wear something blue and serve street food.

02. AVOID TRENDS Pencil thin eyebrows, leg warmers, blue eyeshadow and coloured tights: all things that were trendy at one point in time, but that now most of us wouldn’t be seen dead sporting! If you do incorporate trends into your wedding, it will be much easier to look back on the pictures and identify the exact year it took place.

Wedding trends are slightly more complicated – often something which starts as a trend hangs around for quite a long time. For example, pampas grass began as a trend but has stuck around and evolved. Because there haven’t been many weddings over the last couple of years, we’re yet to see 2020’s trends fully emerge.

04. ACCEPT THAT FASHION CHANGES Fashion will always change and develop – in homeware, clothes, weddings… everything.

The wedding industry is full of incredibly creative, talented people, who are constantly pushing boundaries and creating new styles. And that means that things will always be evolving.

07. STICK TO CALLIGRAPHY OR SAN SERIF FONTS

Oh So Wild

A font can be very revealing. Comic sans, I’m looking at you… Swirly, elaborate fonts will often go in and out of fashion, so if you are trying to achieve a timeless but modern look, it’s best to go for san serif fonts. These are the ones without the fancy bits, like Arial and Helvetica. Try to stick to the simple ones, too. Serif fonts are the more complex ones like Times New Roman.

However, I’m quickly going to contradict everything I’ve just said by declaring that classic calligraphy will never go out of style. It is an art in itself, and will immediately lift an invite, place card, or menu.

06. DO A FEW THINGS WELL

Some colourways will never go out of style, and all of them have a neutral base. By neutral, I mean white, grey, cream… Colour palettes like white and green, cream and blush, and grey and white will always be timeless because of their subtlety. They don’t need to shout about how beautiful they are, they are just effortlessly so.

The more colour you bring in, the more chance you have of it dating your wedding. However, ask yourself if it’s better to have something you love now but might hate later, rather than to have something you will always think is just ‘OK’.

There are some things in life that are always going to be timeless. In the wedding world, those items are elegant tableware, flowers, and well-fitting suits.

Instead of trying to spread your budget thinly over a lot of areas, pick a few elements and do them well.

A quality, heavy napkin will always lift your table and won’t ever go out of fashion.

Tableware is a great way to bring some of your personality into your wedding. If you love pink, look at perhaps having a chic faded pink water glass.

If you’re more of a minimal person, you can reflect that in stylishly simple place cards.

The days of a seated three-course wedding meal may be numbered. At Rocket, we prefer to provide interactive food and drink experiences that allow guests to mingle and chat while nibbling, and we do everything from roaming oyster shuckers to food stalls. Whether it’s a charcuterie stall where a chef is slicing fresh jamon off the bone, or a sushi stall where rolls are being made on the spot, food stalls are a great way to personalise your wedding.

And don’t forget about the dessert course or late-night snacks – one couple we worked with loved Paris (having become engaged while on holiday there), so we featured spinning towers of macarons and glass drawers filled with petit fours as part of an immersive dessert display. For another foodie couple who love Japanese cuisine and 70s dance music, we created a late-night ‘sushi disco’ food stall, complete with a sushi rolling DJ booth on a raised platform. That’s what you call elevated late night munchies!

We love working with couples and finding ways of bringing elements of their personality and relationship history into the experience – with fabulous food at the forefront.

The popularity of vegan and vegetarian dishes continues to rise, but you don’t have to completely eliminate meat. Rather, people are gravitating toward eating less meat, but ensuring that what they do eat is of higher quality. A great way to do this is by having a vegetarian starter that shows off the best of the season’s produce, followed by a prime cut of meat that’s organic and responsibly sourced.

Served with a beautiful array of accompaniments or side dishes, this is just as satisfying and bountiful, but even more delicious and sustainable. 35 per cent of the dishes on our menus are vegetarian, and we work with only the best local suppliers to ensure our menus are as seasonal and sustainable as possible.

One couple has asked us to source all of the ingredients for their meal within a 30-mile radius of their home. We took a road trip to meet all the local producers and created a menu of minimal mileage, maximum seasonality, and one of the producers is working with us to create a bespoke label for the couple’s favourite English Sparkling wine.

03. PERFECTLY PAIRED Armed with a little basic pairing knowledge, you don’t need a sommelier’s qualification to serve a well-matched wine with the various courses of your meal. White or rosé complement soups, salads and appetizers, whereas a light red is typically a good option for the main. A Pinot Noir or Gamay is a safe bet because they work well with a wide range of foods. Cheese is one of life’s simple pleasures and will be sure to please a wedding crowd – pair with medium- to heavy-bodied wines such as a Bordeaux, Shiraz or Malbec, which all go well with a variety of cheeses.

there are so many difficult decisions around reception drinks… and sadly, no right answers. Get the balance right and you’ll have happy guests who are in the mood to celebrate.

04. SERVING STYLE

01. BYO Always start by asking your venue if bringing your own wines is an option. If so, what are the delivery details? Will the venue chill and serve them for you?

What about the glasses? How big are they? If the venue doesn’t allow drinks from outside, don’t be shy about asking if you could have a tasting session beforehand to pick the wines you’d like served.

02. BRILLIANT BUBBLES You can’t go wrong with Champagne, but if your budget doesn’t stretch to that, I find that Prosecco is a good choice. It works well as a reception drink, is perfect for toasting, and goes well with cake, too.

There is a lot of bad Prosecco out there, though, so be sure to take the time to taste different varieties.

When you find a favourite, reach out to the brand directly and find out who their stockists are, and then work with the stockists to get the best price.

Generally, a bottle holds five 125ml glasses, but if you’re working with a caterer, find out how big their flute glasses are, as this will make a difference to your overall calculations. And when counting guests, don’t forget to allow extra for photographers or other key service providers.

If you do have leftover bubbles after the toasts, think about getting creative and mixing a cocktail like a French 75 or an Aperol Spritz to serve during the evening celebrations.

A well-stocked bar will always be well received during the evening celebrations. But if you’re having a barbecue or buffet style meal with a rustic outdoor theme, save on bar costs by filling a wheelbarrow with ice and sticking your wines and beers in there to let people help themselves. Remember to uncork the wines first and provide a bottle opener for guests! A good rule of thumb is to allow roughly half a bottle of wine per person.

05. KEEP A CLEAR HEAD Ensure that you’re catering for every guest by offering a non-alcoholic sparkling wine for the toasts and treating your sober friends and designated drivers to a delicious selection of nonalcoholic Kombucha or alcohol-free beers.

If your venue is responsible for the bar, find out which alcohol-free options they stock and make sure you taste them! If they’re happy for you to bring your own alternatives along, check if they will charge the same corkage as for the wines, or if you can negotiate a cheaper rate.

01. SET THE SCENE

There’s a reason you booked that particular venue in that specific location. We want to know why it’s important to you; perhaps your roots were laid down there, or perhaps it was where you met. These details will help us to elevate your photographs from mere visual documentation to love story. You and your partner are the lead characters, but we also need to set the scene and capture everything that is important to you.

In my opinion, the candid conversations and moments of laughter make for the most magical pictures, but if you do want formal shots, don’t forget to provide your photographer with a list of any particular groups you may want to shoot. This is a simple one but could potentially be overlooked amongst the hectic planning of a wedding.

02. DON’T FORGET THE LITTLE DETAILS

Remember that the day is all about you and your partner. Set some time aside during the day for a more intimate session with your photographer. In these moments we want to see you connect – this is where your personalities will shine through, and we want you to feel comfortable in front of the lens. Let us know if you want this to be shot in a particular way – if you’ve seen a beautiful couple shot on Pinterest, we want to see it, too.

If you’ve booked your photographer for the morning prep shots, be sure to lay out some things that will serve as a memory of the day – the fragrance you’re wearing, your favourite lipstick, your beautiful bouquet. All these elements will play a significant role in the things you remember when you reflect on your album in years to come.

And a good photographer will never miss an opportunity to curate some still life shots.

Where did the idea come from? The initial seed was planted over a dinner with girlfriends, when we decided we could share pieces of fine jewellery that spent most of their time sitting in a safe.

Years later, when I was thinking about a career change, I knew I wanted to do something in the sharing economy and in luxury goods, and the idea dawned on me. It just makes so much sense – the more a piece of jewellery costs, the less you tend to wear it, with the exception of engagement rings. Why invest the full amount when you can take the other 80 per cent and invest that elsewhere, or buy additional pieces to co-own?

Where does Covett source its jewellery? Mainly from awardwinning, mostly British, independent jewellery designers.

And we have partnerships with designers or manufacturers who have created bespoke pieces for us, or have supplied pieces under the Covett label. We are continually having partnership discussions to expand our offering. If a customer is interested in a special piece, we are happy to source it.

How many pieces does Covett’s Vault contain? Currently there are about 70 pieces, and a Cartier watch for loan. Our co-owners vault is only available to those who are co-owners.

How often can a member borrow jewellery? Co-owners have access to their piece monthly, and they can borrow pieces from the subscriber’s vault at any time for a fee. They also have floating days to extend the time they have their piece. There are three levels of subscription: Silver (2 loans/year), Gold (6 loans/year) and Platinum (12 loans/year). All loans are over five consecutive days, but can be extended for a nominal fee.

Can you borrow jewellery without committing to membership? The idea behind our silver subscription is to allow people to try us on two occasions during a year. We feel once someone experiences Covett they will want to become a Covettist – either as a subscriber or co-owner.

Can I sell a piece of my own jewellery to Covett? Yes, we have three ways people can monetise their own fine jewellery or watches. They can sell their piece to Covett, or they can sell 80 per cent of their piece and keep 20 per cent. The third way is that they can put the piece in our subscription vault for loan, and we share the revenue from each loan with them. If you are interested in monetising fine jewellery you currently don’t wear or don’t wear often, contact our concierge team at conceirge@cove.tt.

Does Covett sell the jewellery in its vault? If so, how do shareholders benefit? We are happy to sell pieces in our subscription vault as we know people fall in love with things and want to wear them all the time. Usually this will be done at a discount, unless they would like the piece to be new, in which case we would arrange to sell them a new piece from the brand. Shares in our co-owned pieces can be sold on our platform and if the appraisal of the piece has increased in value, the shareholders all benefit. If one co-owner wants to buy out the other owners, we would try to broker that. Most likely, the easiest path is for them to sell their share and purchase the same piece new. If it’s a one-of-a-kind piece that can’t be replicated, it will be up to the other co-owners to decide whether they would like to sell.

What are some of the most popular pieces? Each week, we do a ‘Most Covetted’ email which lists our most popular pieces.

Most recently we have had a lot of demand for Alice van Cal’s bracelets and necklaces. The Rock Hound statement earrings are very popular, also Eva Gems & Jewels earrings and bracelet get a lot of attention. At our latest event in January, there was a great deal of interest in Backes & Strauss’ watches, Baunat’s diamond pieces and Zeemou Zeng’s rings and necklaces.

After an unprecedented period where weddings were cancelled, followed immediately by restrictions on how and where they could be held, being able to plan a wedding now feels especially exciting. So, it’s no surprise that

brides want to make their outfit even more magical, says bridal designer Kate Halfpenny. We asked her what will be big this year – in a strictly non meringue sense, obviously.

01. PUFF PIECE

03. CAPED CRUSADES

Three years ago, we made a pair of double-puffed bubble sleeves for Millie Mackintosh in tulle and appliqué French lace, since then the trend for sleeves has grown huge, literally! There are so many options out there – you can choose to have your sleeves as detailed or as plain as you like.

We have some epic Mikado sleeves in the collection we launched last year and a gorgeous shrug, which adds additional volume. Detachable sleeves allow you to be traditional if you want to be, while also playing with the drama.

Capes have been popular for a while, and I don’t see the trend going anywhere. Much like detachable sleeves and overskirts, a cape can add magical detail to a simple dress. I think this is especially true if you’re not into wearing a veil, which is becoming more popular.

02. DAY TO NIGHT I’ve always loved the concept of layering an outfit with detachable elements that allow the wearer to transform their look throughout the day, moving from ceremony through to late night dancing. The great thing about choosing a detachable overskirt is that you can wear it over a beautiful fit-and-flare silhouette and transform from princess to goddess in moments. Have fun with it and people will think you have completely changed your outfit. The pandemic has changed weddings, but no matter how big or small your day is, you can still wear the dress of your dreams and feel amazing. Some brides are opting to have a small ceremony now and then host a bigger party at a later date – and there’s no reason not to wear the same dress for both events. Choose something simple and elegant for the ceremony, then add a dramatic overskirt for the party.

04. BEHIND THE VEIL That said, I’m a big fan of veils, and personally couldn’t imagine not wearing one – for me, it was like my armour. Even though it was sheer it gave me the opportunity to hide a little when I stepped into the church with all eyes on me.

Veils can elevate any look and make the simplest of gowns look bridal. They can also make something quite lacy and pretty look more edgy and fashion forward if you choose a 3D appliqué veil, for example. I’d say around 80 per cent of our brides choose to wear one and I’m all for the drama that it brings. When else will you have the opportunity to wear one?

05. BEAUTIFUL BOWS I’ve always been obsessed with bows, whether that be the oversized graphic detachable ones we launched last September for our Out of this World collection, or a more subtle detail like the back of our Oak dress. Everything comes full circle – big 1980s bows here we come!

06. SUSTAINABLE STYLE Not so much a trend, this is here to stay. Becoming more sustainable is something we’ve been working on for a very long time, taking into consideration everything from choosing to manufacture in the UK, to using all recyclable packaging. We’ve even thought about what happens to the off-cuts from the fabric we use to construct the gowns – everything is repurposed or donated so no fabric ever ends up in landfill. Most importantly, I don’t want you to think about your wedding dress as a single wear item, I want you to think about it as something that you can wear again, or pass down as an heirloom.

It should have a journey, like any other precious items of clothing you own.

07. PIECE BY PIECE Leading on from this, the trend for separates is going nowhere. If you have a smaller wedding dress budget, consider investing in separates that will last you a lifetime and can be incorporated into your wardrobe to enjoy again and again.

Even big ballgown skirts can be shortened and worn with a cashmere sweater or cute cami on another occasion. The beauty of a two piece is that the choices are virtually unlimited, and you can really pick and choose your top and bottom to create the exact look you desire, turning you into the bride you want to be.

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL… My plans started small. Just a simple, pared-back wedding, a special, intimate day to share with those we love the most. But then – as these things tend to do – the plans changed. After all, haven’t we just lived through a joyless pandemic?

Don’t we all deserve a good old knees-up? And don’t I – raised on a diet of 40s starlets, 60s sirens, basically born with a ‘MY WEDDING!!’ Pinterest board on the go – deserve a special day? After all, how many times does a girl get married – two, three, tops?! Problem is, due to a number of factors (age, kids, did I mention COVID?), I’ve been feeling a long way from my glamorous best for a long time, even finding it hard to imagine there was a road back. But rather than wallow, I decided it was time to call in the big guns.

I’ve long waxed lyrical about Daxita when it comes to lashes, microblading and, more recently, semi permanent make up like her ‘lip blush’ – but she really and truly is the best in the business. I once made the mistake of getting someone other than Daxita to apply semi-permanent lashes, reasoning that lashes were lashes. I was wrong. She is quite simply an artist; yes, she’ll take guidance as to what you want (in my case, the perfect lashes to set off a 60s-style cat’s eye look), but her expert eye tailors the application to the shape of your face, brows and eyes, somehow ensuring even the most dramatic vibe remains in balance, and steering well clear of veering into drag. Daxita applied a full set of Russian lashes and the difference it made to my face was astonishing; a Bambi eyed, well rested A-List version of the person I’d become since my last visit to Daxita, prompting me to book my next appointment instantly and resolving to keep this up on the regular.

With the spring well and truly back in my step, I was ready to take on the next challenge: my hair. I had set myself two fairly (read: ridiculously) ambitious role models for the big day: Liz Taylor, for her tumbling, coiffed, Burton-era tresses, and Dolly Parton, for her ethos “the higher the hair, the closer to God”. In short, I needed to go BIG. I felt somewhat intimidated as I walked into Inanch London, the salon of Inanch Emir, hairdressing pioneer (she invented Gold Class extensions, that are simply best in class), and, by the look of their social media, the go-to place for London’s most chic and beautiful. Would me and my frizzy, neglected mop feel out of place? Within a minute of meeting Inanch, my fears were allayed on all fronts; not only is she the most down-to-earth, welcoming hairdressing pioneer I’ve ever met, she assured me that my 60s bouncing bouffant dreams were incredibly easy to achieve with (whisper it) hairpieces. After a consultation, then a trim and colour the week before the wedding, she came to me on the big day with everything fully prepared, and – Oh. My. Goodness. The second those hairpieces went in, I felt, without exaggeration, like a different person. I felt – well, not quite like Liz Taylor, but like the bride I had always (however secretly) wanted to be.

he spring sun is shining but there’s still a winter chill in the air. We are undeterred by the temperature, though – wrapped up in luxurious woollen blankets from the boot room, we’re making the most of the sprawling terrace at Edgar House, our home from home for a very special hen weekend. The grand Georgian house sits in a prime position overlooking the rushing waters of the River Dee, set directly on Chester’s Roman city walls. Mere moments from the shops and amenities of the city centre and a short stroll from the famous racecourse, even Kirstie and Phil would find little to criticise in this location. We pop the cork on our Champagne and clink glasses, toasting, amongst other things, our very good fortune to be here.

Previously an award-winning boutique hotel, Edgar House is now the first property in Daisy Joy Escapes’ select portfolio of exceptional holiday homes (work is currently being undertaken on two equally special properties in the Lake District and on Anglesey, which are due to open over the next year). The interiors offer a welcoming mix of luxury and cosiness. This might be a sprawling Regency mansion, but here, grand stone fireplaces and ornate crystal chandeliers are met with contemporary plush velvet sofas to dive into, complete with cosy throws made for snuggling up in. At the heart of the house is an enormous, open-plan L-shaped living area, which accommodates a 12-seat dining table, an inviting fireside sitting room, and a sleek and chic kitchen with all mod cons – and then some: top of the range Miele appliances, a Quooker tap, and a Nespresso machine bring a touch of luxury to leisurely breakfasts sat around the large kitchen island.

We have our pick of seven sumptuous bedrooms, all en suite, some with riverfront balconies and each with its own design personality. The Copper Suite boasts a private lounge room, an en suite with a huge, gilded rainfall shower, and the pièce de résistance: an in-bedroom traditional copper bath, impossible to get out of, for all the right reasons. Quirky modern wallcoverings are juxtaposed with pattern rich headboards that don’t hold back on scale; crisp white bed linen

and fluffy white towels bring high end hotel standards to the bedrooms – yet carefully considered bedside books remind us that this is now more home than hotel.

Finding little to tempt us away from this haven, we enlist the services of The Cheshire Dining Experience on our first night at the house. With their Michelin-trained chefs and experienced front of house team, they offer restaurant quality fine dining at home. The evening begins with gin and tonics, complete with artfully carved apple garnish, served in front of the blazing fire.

As we sip our drinks, comfortably sprawled on the world’s largest sofa, we chat to the friendly team who are at work around the vast kitchen island.

The cooking smells are irresistible, and fortunately we don’t have long to wait before we’re shown through to the dining area, where the table has been laid and the candles are lit. The scene has been set for a very special meal indeed. We start with seared tuna, served with fresh apple carpaccio, fermented cucumber and avocado purée. Deliciously light and delicately flavoured, it comes exquisitely plated with the perfectly pink tuna and vivid green accompaniments standing out beautifully against modern, matt black tableware. Were it not for the fact we have our slippers on, we could be dining at any of Michelin’s finest.

Tender sous vide fillet of beef follows, rolled in ash, and accompanied by a quenelle of truffled, glazed cheek, and a creamy potato terrine. Melt in the middle chocolate fondant with raspberry sorbet and miso marshmallow rounds of the meal. Service is attentive but discreet throughout, with the team answering questions, explaining techniques, and ensuring that wine and water glasses are never empty, but allowing us space and time to enjoy each course. Utterly professional, they have cleared up the kitchen, leaving no trace of their presence, before we have even drained our final glasses of wine, and they pop around to bid us farewell before letting themselves out.

Perhaps the best thing about this type of dining is the fact that we have no further to travel after the meal than across the room to flop contentedly by the fire. And once there, feeling gloriously replete, we have only to muster the energy to head upstairs to bed.

Later, enveloped in crisp white bedding, we are lulled to sleep by the sound of the river rushing past outside; it has been an evening that will be hard to top.

We have big plans for exploring Chester, but find ourselves so happy at Edgar House that we are content to spend our days lazily enjoying the facilities. While the grand L-shaped room is where most of the action takes place, breakout spaces are equally luxurious and thoughtfully designed. The cinema room provides the cosiest seating, ideal acoustics, low lighting, and a state-of-the-art Sonos surround sound system, which proves perfect for lazy movie afternoons and high-octane karaoke sessions alike. The basement games room is brilliantly designed to mimic a private bar, complete with fussball table, a retro-inspired (but naturally high tech) jukebox, and a specially commissioned piece of street art adorning the back wall. All we need do is pop upstairs and grab a beer from the repurposed London telephone box turned drinks fridge – a humorous nod from Chester’s fair city to ours.

We do, though, venture out to take a leisurely stroll around the city walls on our last morning – enjoying the inquisitive looks of passers-by and feeling ever so important as we let ourselves out of the front gate, directly onto the raised walkway. Built by the Romans, with a history stretching back over 2,000 years, they are the oldest, longest and most complete set of city walls in Britain.

At just over 3km, the circular walk affords an opportunity to enjoy a whistle-stop tour of this beautiful city, taking in views of the river Dee and the Shropshire Union Canal, too. We marvel at the remarkably preserved 17th century timber framed houses, gaze out over the manicured green of the racecourse, and snap pictures of the imposing medieval cathedral and the remains of the castle, built in 1070 by Hugh d’Avranches, the first Earl of Chester. Underneath the gilded Eastgate Clock – the most photographed clock in England after our own Big Ben, apparently – we find the perfect spot for a group picture. Having spent our stay happily ensconced in Edgar House, it is the only proof that we were actually in Chester. Given our time again (yes please!), we wouldn’t do anything differently.

Not only do antiques add elegance and character to a space, buying pre-loved also offers a great way to be greener in a more environmentally conscious world.

Nefarious Design offer their tips on choosing the perfect piece for your home When purchasing antiques, it’s important to bear in mind that they are used, meaning they may be slightly damaged or marked from their previous life. Don’t underestimate how much personality and character this adds but do make sure that you know exactly what you’re buying. Having to return items that turn out to be rotting, deconstructed or unusable costs both money and time.

If you are buying online, it’s vital to carefully check the images on the supplier’s website and don’t be afraid to ask for more if there are only a limited number. This way you can be more sure of the condition of the antique.

If you can, it’s always best to see the piece in person. Even if you are purchasing online, find out if you can reserve the item and then visit the showroom or shop to ensure that it is as described.

Be sure to inspect all sides of the piece, not only those bits that are immediately visible. Check the piece’s structural stability. If there are drawers or doors, check that they open and close smoothly.

Taking a family member or friend is helpful as they will be able to provide you with a second opinion and may spot a flaw you had overlooked.

Think about practicality. Does the piece meet the demands of its purpose? How will you get it from its current location? And once you have it, will it fit the

space? Are there issues which may restrict access, like steep stairs and narrow doorways?

Social media is a great tool for sourcing antiques, but not every account is legitimate, so always do your research by checking for reviews of other customers’ experiences with a supplier before committing to any purchases.

If you have done your due diligence, there is very little risk in investing in good antiques – if you really love something, you will keep it for longer, making for an excellent return on your investment.

NICKI BAMFORD-BOWES This interior stylist, designer and maker shows us around her London pad that’s bursting with colour and character WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by LOL JOHNSON

There was a time when Nicki considered a move to the country to accommodate her growing brood. She tells me she was “very close to putting in an offer on a beautiful large home with a pool and an orchard.” But like many city dwellers who’ve entertained the idea of a country pile, the pull of London living ultimately proved too strong. “I suddenly realised we were chasing a dream that wasn’t really ‘us’,” she admits. “I didn’t want to be responsible for large grounds and I love living in London, enjoying the local restaurants, museums and culture.” The designer shares her Victorian semi with husband Matt, sons Oscar and Bertie and daughter Bo, alongside Wolfie the “ridiculously fluffy” family cat.

It was always Nicki’s intention to find a project of a property, one which she could strip back and put her own creative stamp on. But there are cosmetic doer-uppers, and then there are homes which require a major overhaul. “To be

completely honest, I hankered after a wreck,” she says. “This house was lived in by an older single man and the décor wasn’t to my taste at all. But we loved the classic exterior with pillars either side of the front door, and the sash windows. We were also lucky that the house had lots of internal original features such as intricate cornicing and ceiling roses, and large double doors between the reception rooms. When we moved in, we completely gutted the house apart from the kitchen, we incorporated a boxroom bedroom to create a large family bathroom and study. We redecorated throughout, sanded floors and put back fireplaces where they had been removed.”

Indeed, character is all-important to Nicki, and here, the designer resolved to restore as much as re-paint: “I’ve always preferred an older house with character over a new build,” she tells me.

“I love high ceilings, cornicing details, ornate fireplaces and big bay windows. Old houses have

And where luxury meets comfort, one of Nicki’s very favourite pieces is a tub chair coveted from Abigail Ahern, which the designer’s friends clubbed together to buy for her 40th. “It’s a modern classic and I absolutely adore it,” she enthuses. Another favourite is a mid-century inspired rattan chair and footstool set from Home Essentials, which Nicki recently used to create a reading nook in the bedroom.

“I listen to chilled music in this space. It’s a place where I get my best creative ideas,” she reveals. Nicki is, in fact, brand ambassador for Home Essentials, and can often be found giving inspiring interiors tips and tricks to customers on the brand’s social channels. She’s also got a number of residential and commercial projects up her sleeve, including “a very cool independent shop.” But when she gets home, the work doesn’t stop: “I’m about to extend our kitchen into the garden and the side return to create a huge kitchen, utility and family space,” she tells me.

“I’m really excited about this because we only have neighbours on one side so we’ve been able to make the walls higher than you might expect, which means the space will be flooded with natural light.

On a typical day I wake up early and take Bobbie, our Border Terrier Jack Russell cross for a long walk in Queen’s Park. I like to grab a flat white from The Park Café while I’m there.

Afterwards, I head to my new co-workspace, The Loft, which is on Salusbury Road –about a 15-minute walk from home on Fifth Avenue. It’s a lovely modern space with lots of natural light – a fantastic place to go to work every day. I run a high-end holiday rental company with my brother, called The Luxury Travel Book.

We specialise in offering villas and apartments – mainly in Europe, predominantly Italy, Greece, Portugal and the Balearics.

Due to changing travel restrictions and damaged consumer confidence, business has been up and down since the start of the pandemic. However, 2022 has started very positively with increased customer bookings showing really pent-up demand for travel. As a result, we’ve recently expanded our team – I had been working from home, but this meant it was necessary for me to move out to an office space. I’ve really appreciated having the separation from home, and it’s also been a great way to meet people in the local area who use the same space.

There’s a plethora of options for lunch: the office is directly above Planet Organic, which is very handy, and the Salusbury Deli does great boxes you can fill with freshly made salads and pastas, and, of course, there’s the always wonderful Gail’s.

I’m a member of Fitness First on Salusbury Road, but with work being so busy, I haven’t managed to go much recently. When I can squeeze it in I’ll do some weights and a run on the treadmill. An after-work drink is often more appealing though! For that, the Salusbury Pub is a classic. The atmosphere there is always good and they serve great pizzas. For a local dinner or a Friday lunch we like Carmel, an amazing new restaurant on Lonsdale Road.

It serves a Middle Eastern menu and is from the team behind Berber & Q. The food is incredible, and it’s been getting great write-ups. I highly recommend the slow-grilled chilli chicken dish.

Through work, I’ve just been invited to stay at a beautiful estate in Umbria. The nine luxury villas here are available to book on our website and this will be a great opportunity to see the villas firsthand, and experience the activities available to guests, including the wine and olive oil tastings, and the truffle hunt, which all take place on the estate. Italy is proving particularly popular for travellers this summer, so we are always looking for stunning new properties to add to our portfolio. My wife Rosie also has a passion for travel and runs her own private travel business from home.

Engineered for success

The curriculum at Devonshire House Preparatory School is designed to help shape adaptable and creative minds, for a changing world Devonshire House Preparatory School in Hampstead prides itself on providing a warm, caring atmosphere where each child receives an exceptional education and where staff help them to discover and grow their talents and abilities.

Lessons and activities are designed to inspire not only a love of learning, but a love of thinking for oneself and the strength and resilience to do so.

As part of this, in a change to the usual school science week activities, Devonshire House decided to dedicate a week’s worth of activities to engineering. From the nursery up to Year 8, pupils worked on a range of engineering projects and activities, from crafting catapults to building skyscrapers, and from product design to robotics!

Although the final products of these sessions had value, the key focus of the week was on the skills required to become a successful engineer.

Risk-taking, resilience, teamwork, and originality to name a few. After just a few sessions, teachers saw incredible improvement in collaboration within project teams, and the children’s ability to problem solve and think creatively without worry.

These open-ended sessions that created moments of ‘awe and wonder’ were made possible through a shift from traditional teaching, where the teacher leads the way, to one where pupils have the freedom to create their own solutions.

Year 7 were aeronautical engineers and investigated how wing shape affected the flying

ability of their gliders. They made their gliders from balsa wood and the most successful flew 10 metres!

Year 4 started off the week with building challenges… Can you build a structure with just one cube as the base? Can you build a structure that shows a feat of balance? After each challenge, pupils were encouraged to reflect on their behaviour within the team, perhaps they were more assertive or more passive. They then discussed what they could do to improve on this moving forward.

Junior school staff ran robotics workshops alongside classroom activities. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed matching together the different parts of a robot and assembling them successfully as a team.

Year 5 were civil engineers for the week, tasked to build the tallest and most stable skyscraper out of newspaper! They realised that when tightly rolled, newspaper becomes surprisingly strong.

There were moments of frustration within teams, and disagreements as to how tall to build without compromising on stability, but it was brilliant to see the children come full circle and finish the week feeling united and proud.

Year 8 disassembled and reassembled different Dyson tools to gain an appreciation of the innovative thinking and exceptional detail required in their construction. They applied this new understanding as design engineers and designed a product in response to a brief.

It was truly an exciting week that saw the children having a lot of fun as they learnt.

fter a two-year hiatus, exams are back – with all their flaws. “Exams are an indicator of ability, but an imperfect one,” says Ray Douse, co-founder of Whizz Education. “There are plenty of examples of people who’ve soared to great heights after failing totally at exams. And high-stakes testing can quite easily stress examinees into misleading results, which limits how much we should rely on them.”

Continuous assessment, on the other hand, is about evaluating progress throughout the year, rather than in one scary lump at the end.

Ideally, teachers adjust their content and teaching continuously too, to make sure no child gets left behind. But in reality, it can be hard to address all the different levels in a class – even in primary school, where the best children can be 2-4 years ahead of the weaker ones.

Edtech like Maths-Whizz can help. A virtual tutor, it uses AI to work through the maths curriculum, constantly monitoring a child’s progress and adapting the next session to suit their exact needs.

So weaker students don’t fall behind, and stronger ones don’t get bored or discouraged. It also records

progress in reports, so teachers (or parents) can see how each child is doing, without needing to test them. And because it’s inexpensive to scale up (unlike human tutoring), it’s a great way of helping children catch up on lost learning from the past two years.

Tech like this sounds indispensable, especially if it’ll make exams redundant one day. But Ray isn’t convinced. “There’s a good case for using adaptive tech to replace SATs, because they can encourage teachers to teach to the test, which isn’t productive at all,” he says. “But it’s hard to imagine a child relying solely on a computer record of how they’ve performed from the age of five to 18.

It’s not impossible, but we’d need to be sure the measures involved were reliable compared with those in exams.”

In the meantime, if your child doesn’t fare well in exams, try not to worry too much. As Ray says: “Employers are a lot more interested in what someone can do, and whether they’re selfmotivated, determined and passionate about the work involved. All of those things trump exams.” whizz.com

Deborah Stanton from Garrington Property Finders shares some expert tips for successfully moving to your dream home this Spring To the surprise of many, the property market has remained somewhat frenzied over recent months, and all the signs are that the traditionally brisk Spring market could be one of the busiest on record this year. Moving home in a fast-paced property market like this presents both opportunities and challenges.

The main driving force behind rising prices and such a competitive market is an acute imbalance between the number of properties being made available for sale and the continuing glut of homebuyers desperate to find their next property. Of course, with Spring approaching it is likely that more properties will be brought to market, but the sheer volume of buyers actively looking suggests that there will still not be enough homes for sale to meet demand.

Tips for successfully finding and securing your next home A few years ago, when a cash buyer with nothing to sell registered with an estate agent they would have rolled out the red carpet! Unfortunately, today, this optimal position is less rare as many buyers over the last year have sold their properties and moved into a rental property, poised to buy and snap up the latest listing.

For this reason, increasing numbers of sellers are choosing to sell off-market through their estate agent, where the speed and sale process can sometimes be better controlled, away from the spotlight of the open market. As Fabric turns 21, we ask Glentree’s Trevor Abrahmsohn to reflect on how the market has changed since our first issue “What’s reassuring is that residential property values in London have increased greatly over this time. Apart from providing a sanctuary and a home for the family, in later life, owning property can allow the release of surplus capital, acting as a quasi-pension. Although it is unfortunate that the growth in property values further disenfranchises the first-time buyer, those already on the property ladder benefit as mortgage debt shrinks in relation to equity as prices rise.

Although there has been universal growth in value across the Capital, areas like Queen’s Park with its close proximity to Notting Hill (which for some, has become unaffordable), are now a destination of choice for the up-and-coming demographic groups looking to find a foothold in this part of London. The Covid legacy has reignited the love affair with outside space, so much that properties without it are being disproportionately penalised.

The marketing of property has changed significantly with the onset of online portals and social media, which are playing an increasingly large role in the process. However, the lack of traction of online estate agents tells us that the average consumer still prefers the ‘touchy-feely’ method operated by bricks and mortar estate agents. Selling property is a process which cannot be completely digitalised – sales negotiators do not rely completely on computers to match applicants with properties, since human interaction is vital in the process.
