PIPE FINISHING

Modified cabinets with openings on both sides provide a space-saving alternative to larger cabinets. Designed for finishing pipe, the unit shown above has dual-baffle pates in the entrance and exit vestibules to contain dust and media. A powered system can be added to feed and roll parts automatically.

This pass-through cabinet simplifies the handling and finishing of metal or glass plates. Special features include a gasketed entrance/exit slot between the cabinet’s double doors in addition to interior part guides that facilitate material handling.

MODIFIED PRO-FINISH CABINETS

The Empire cabinet shown above provides a small glimps of our versatility in modifying cabinets to meet specialized production requirements. With a vertical-lift door, a powered turntable and a hands-on work station, this unit integrates manual control with automation to exploit the best of both worlds.

To speed finishing of very long workpieces, Empire can supply a dual-cabinet system. The unit shown includes a center expander with its own glove set and foot treadle control, which operates one of the system’s two blast guns. Cabinet controls are independent, enabling two operators to work on a single piece at the same time.

PRO-FIN

SUCTION CABINETS Pro-Finish suction cabinets cost less and are simpler than pressure cabinets. They also blast continuously without the need to stop for media refills, and they simplify the use of multiple nozzles. The results are usually comparable to those achieved with a pressure system although production rates are not as high. When initial cost and maintenance are primary concerns, the suction system is a good choice.

Rigid double-panel door delivers extended service life and reduces leakage; flush construction eliminates media spills.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A PRO-FINISH速 SYSTEM If your operations involve cleaning with chemicals, acid etching or dipping, liquid honing, wire brushing, sanding, deburring, grinding, or peening, odds are a Pro-Finish system will save you time and money. (Suction with reclaimer and bag)

These cabinet systems, designed for non-stop blasting, increase production rates because blasting is faster than other manual methods.

NISHÂŽ CABINETS

PRESSURE CABINETS

Profits and Quality Tunable reclaimer reduces media loss, cuts operating costs and improves finishing results. Self-adjusting door latch assures continued tight sealing as gasket ages.

Because pressure cabinets deliver blast media at higher velocities than suction systems, a Pro-Finish pressure cabinet is ideal for turning out work fast. In many applications, these pressure cabinets will perform jobs four-times faster than suction systems. In Addition, they use compressed air more efficiently and provide more precise blasting control at both high and low operating pressures. For really demanding tasks, like removing tight mills scale or finishing hard-to-reach surfaces, a pressure system is normally the only practical choice.

Kleensweep™ system directs airflow across window to prevent dust buildup and improve visibility.

WET BLASTING

HYDRO-HONE The I.C.M. Stainless Steel HYDRO-HONE line of wet abrasive blast cabinets expands the versatility of blast cleaning and includes jobs too delicate for traditional dry blasting. Water is placed in an abrasive storage hopper where it is then mixed with media (all types and sizes will work). The pump is turned on and the media and water are agitated together to formulate a slurry. The pump discharge suspends abrasive in the water while it also carries the slurry to the blast nozzle where it is forced from the blast gun by compressed air. Special Features of the I.C.M. Hydro-Hone: • Eliminates all dust form blasting process • Eliminates the possibility of iron contamination • Slurry system keeps abrasive suspended without using compressed air.

Ceramic beads

Ceramic beads

High impact strength versus glass beads and steel shot

Steel shot

Glass beads

After 10 cycles, glass beads generate a lot of dust which sticks to the beads and they become aggressive towards the equipment.

Steel shot wear and breaks according to its hardness, generating dust. Hardness, shape and size are not consistent during life time.

CETIM Tests, compressed air, pressure 4 bars, aluminum target.

Blasting Media

Ceramic bead characteristics remain consistent: no size change and no dust. Some of the broken parts are easily eliminated by the separation system.

BLASTING TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

Blasting is a process where Small angular or spherical particles are propelled at a parts surface by compressed air or high speed rotating wheel. Visual and mechanical effects are produced by the particles (media) impacting the surface. The visual or mechanical effects on the surface will vary depending on the particle size, shape, density, composition, hardness, acceleration speed and angle of impact.

Technical Information

TYPES OF BLASTING SYSTEMS 1. Air Blasting (pheumatic) 2. Wheel Blasting

AIR BLASTING Utilizes an air compressor to deliver media. Air pressure affects the speed of the media delivery. Volume of the air (scfm) is mainly determined by the orifice diameter of the nozzle (air jet diameter in suction blasters). Other factors that affect volume in blasting is air hose and media hose diameter, and air pressure.

There are two types of air blasting: Suction (used primarily in blast cabinet systems) Pressure (used in blast cabinets, Blast Rooms and outside blast systems) SUCTION BLASTING • Uses venture principle sucking media from a hopper. The air jet is 1/2 the ID of the nozzle and as the air Stream is passed thru both, it creates a low pressure, sucking the media from the hopper. • Media acceleration distance is very short (from nozzle to the work piece - approx. 4 to 14”) • Does not lift heavy medias

PRESSURE SYSTEM

PRESSURE BLASTING • Uses ASME pressure vessel approved pressure pot. • As the pressure pot is energized with air and media, and then released, the media accelerates from the Pot thru the 5-10 ft of hose and then picks up speed thru the venture of the nozzle. Because of this the media acceleration rates are much higher than in suction blasting. Making pressure blasting approximately 4 times faster than suction blasting. • When the pressure pot empties of the media and air, the pot has to be depressurized to refill the pot.

WHEEL BLAST SYSTEMS This blast system utilizes a high speed rotation wheel to propel the media. The wheel size design and rotation speed affect the velocity and pattern of the media. The abrasive is feed into the rotating wheel. The impact on the media by the hard rotating wheel usually restricts media selection to a very tough steel or stainless steel shot or grit. Machines can be built with multiple wheels for automation. Automated systems include basket, table, spinner hangers and continuos conveyor processing. Wheel blast systems are a less expensive way to blast (due to higher media recycleability and automation) than air blasting by a factor of 10. Their disadvantage are restrictions to very few media.

(Blast rooms and outdoor Blasting Systems) Air consumption and media delivery rates are much higher on blast rooms and outdoor blasting systems than in pressure blast cabinets. The air supply hose ID, the blast media delivery hose ID, the nozzle ID, and the pressure pots and piping are much larger on the blast room and outdoor systems, making them much more productive than smaller pressure blast cabinets.

*Above information is intended as a general reference guide

GENERAL MEDIA INFORMATION • Spherical Medias are used for peening and produce smoother surface finishes. • Angular medias chip at a parts surface removing paint, rust, and scale quicker than round medias and produce a rougher surface finish and better anchor patterns for coating adhesions. • Higher blast pressures reduce media life. • Higher blast pressures increase production.

• • • • •

Harder work pieces reduce media life. Dust collection keeps media clean. When calculating media – take in account Media cost and life cycles Disposal fees (if blasting heavy metals use a very recyclable media) • Production rate of media, labor and air compressor expense.
