THE GRATEFUL PATIENT
“Hope through Healthcare” is not just a tagline for Good News Clinics. Patients come to us from different backgrounds with varying needs, and we provide them with care for their bodies and spirits. Because of the help they are given here, our patients show their gratitude in a variety of ways. Now, the Grateful Patient Program will allow them to share what the care at The Clinics has meant to their lives.
Miranda’s* Story
Miranda is a beautiful success story. She became a patient of the Clinics in 2020 after experiencing the tragic loss of her husband and parents within six weeks of each other. She entered the doors to The Clinics with anger, sadness, and uncertainty, and it showed in her first few visits.

After coming to terms with her situational needs, Miranda began to truly understand that the staff and volunteers of The Clinics
Aaron’s* Story
Aaron met his wife early in life and built a successful career as a truck driver. He was living life to the fullest with his wife and two adult children when the foundation was pulled out from under him after his wife died of cancer.
His health started to fail, and his grief and ongoing struggles with depression eventually caused Aaron to lose his job, his insurance and his home. For a year and a half, Aaron lived on the streets of Gainesville. Aaron developed COPD, and as his health continued to fail, he became a patient at Good News Clinics, where he was also diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF).
The Clinics makes sure that Aaron gets the care he needs and does whatever it takes to get him to every appointment, despite mobility and transportation issues. The staff makes sure that he is compliant with his CHF visits, gets his hypertension medications and ensures that he is constantly consulting with our pharmacist and primary care doctor to make sure he receives his inhaler and other medication, as needed. He also sees a registered dietitian at every visit.
Aaron is one of many patients that The Clinics staff all know by name. He takes a lot of pride in himself and his well-being, and Good News Clinics is here to help him, every step of the way.

were there to help her along her journey. “Everyone was there for me, and that’s what The Clinics are about.” Having filled the healthcare gap until she was able to obtain insurance of her own, Miranda will no longer need to remain a patient of Good News Clinics.

UPDATE FROM LIZ
“
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
Matthew 22:37-39
Who has shaped and inspired you most in your life?
What is it about that figure that made such an impression on you? What did that person teach you to do or to be? What was at the heart of this figure’s motive for living the way they did?
These people we recall so fondly are important to us not because of what they’ve done, but how they’ve made us feel. They are encouragers; they see things in a deeper way and guide us from their hearts. They are figures of hope
Moses was a figure of hope. This great, unqualified leader who led a nation of disinherited Israelites out of slavery and exile and to the land of milk of honey, is remembered not only for what he accomplished but HOW he accomplished it. Moses encouraged those he led to be motivated to create a just and gracious society by sharing love for God and concern for others. Moses implored that they, and we, be motivated out of gratitude for all that God has done for us.
This spring, The Clinics launches our Grateful Patient Program. Our patients put cash gifts into small donation boxes around our clinic every day. These gifts come from people who may not have it to give, but who give anyway out of gratitude. We have grateful patients. We will be providing notecards for patients as well, giving them a chance to show gratitude through words to a volunteer or staff person who has shown kindness and encourage them. Many of our volunteers are indeed figures of hope themselves.
As we launch The Grateful Patient Program, we simultaneously invite you to consider a unique and powerful expression of your gratitude for those who have been figures of hope in your lives.
I am willing to bet that your Figure of Hope was or is motivated by love, gratitude and concern for others. I cannot imagine a greater honor than that title. Details about how to honor your figure and join our grateful patients in giving are enclosed.
Join us as we seek to celebrate and move toward the homestretch of our Greater Things Campaign to expand hope for this community through a ministry of healthcare. Consider a donation to honor your figure of hope, past or present. We have over $1 million left to reach our goal. Greater Things breaks ground with a ceremony at The Clinics on May 4th, and we hope you will attend.
May your cup overflow with gratitude. May you be blessed by your love of God and tangible concern for others.
Gratefully,

Liz Coates Executive Director, Good News ClinicsWhen Owen arrived in the United States as a young adult after escaping an abusive household in his home country of Jordan, he didn’t know that he was affected by learning disabilities and developmental delays including dyslexia and dysgraphia that would lead to years of anxiety and depression.
As an older adult in his early 60’s, after the loss of his job, he needed care due to growing depression, mental disabilities and a worldchanging pandemic. He also struggled with hypertension and coronary artery disease, along with worsening kidney disease.

Once all of those things started to be managed through the care of providers, staff and prescribed medications, Owen shared his main goal with counselors at The Clinics–to become a citizen of the United States, a country he had called home for years. Through many hoops and help from The Clinics staff, he was able to schedule an immigration test, but it was a written test, and he failed that first attempt. Heartbroken,

“The staff is so beautiful and so nice, and my wife and I couldn’t have done anything without them. They have helped me mentally, physically, emotionally, and everyone did a lot of good things for me. “
The Clinics staff helped Owen be properly diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia, and another immigration test was scheduled–this time, to be given verbally. He passed the test with flying colors.
The next day, he was at the steps of The Clinics, crying tears of joy, handing out hugs left and right, and could not be prouder of the help that he received.
