The global political tensions, particularly the war in Ukraine and strained relations between the US and China, have made it increasingly difficult to predict the agriculture economy. Additionally, the volatile US economy, which is likely heading towards a recession, adds to the uncertainty.
It is surprising to see how much the Prime Lending Rate has increased from 3.5% in March 2022 to 8.25% today. That includes 11 interest rate increases in 15 months. Even the experts at the US Treasury and Federal Reserve did not anticipate this, as they believed inflation would be temporary, if not transitory. It is baffling how intelligent people can sometimes make such mistakes and react rather than plan and be proactive. Interest rates are now the highest they have been in 22 years, and it seems there may be another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve before year end. It may be well into 2024 before the Federal Reserve begins to consider pivoting and lowering rates.
Despite these challenges and head winds, the farmland market remains strong. Pifer’s land auctions continue to achieve high prices, either at or near all-time highs. This trend is expected to continue throughout 2023. Equipment auctions also show promising signs of continued strong prices.
In this catalog, you will find several impressive land offerings, including exceptional cropland, pastureland, and hunting land. This fall’s catalog is one of the most extensive offerings of land that Pifer’s has ever had. Additionally, Pifer’s Equipment Auction team is preparing several equipment estate and consignment auctions for late 2023 and 2024.
I hope you enjoy browsing through this catalog and appreciate the hard work our marketing team puts into it every year. There is something for everyone in this catalog. And if you decide to purchase farmland and require a farmland manager, Pifer’s team of experts is the best in the business. Nobody does it better.
We look forward to welcoming you to a Pifer’s auction soon!
