Great challenges & the main topics of the European Forum Alpbach 2018

An interview with Franz Fischler, President of the European Forum Alpbach

At the European Forum Alpbach, international experts rack their brains for three weeks trying to come up with strategies for a better world. What can we expect this year? What makes the Alpbach Forum so unique is that actors from such different fields as healthcare, business, politics and culture present and discuss a huge variety of opinions and ideas. This leads to tangible conclusions and concrete solutions.The Forum starts with the Seminar Week: More than 700 scholarship holders from all over Europe and beyond are coming to Alpbach to enter into an environment of new ideas and intellectual approaches together with renowned academics, and to engage in an interdisciplinary discourse. We definitely do not want to be an event where only “bosses” meet.

Climate change and sustainability are often neglected in day-to-day politics. How will the Forum address these issues?

Implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals is not a ‘quick win’. But we still need to address the issue. This year, for example, the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens and the UN initiative “Ethics in Action” are hosting retreats in Alpbach. The participants will produce concrete measures for the implementation of the SDGs. Furthermore, we will explore financial sustainability, and ‘impact investing’ in particular. From BlackRock and the big banks to the Soros Foundation, the big players will get together in Alpbach to discuss criteria for socially sustainable types of investments.

What about the future of the European Union?

The challenges facing the European Union are being discussed more heatedly than ever – not least because of Austria’s current EU Presidency. During the Political Symposium, we will tackle the tricky issues – such as the relationships with Russia and the USA or the conflicts in the Middle East and in North and South Korea. The European Forum Alpbach is unique in the way everyone can talk to anyone here. This enables our participants to build bridges in many different directions.

There is also a focus on strengthening democracy. We are seeing nationalist and populist tendencies evolve as a dangerous disruptive force. This we need to resist. We want to preserve liberal democracy, we want our children to have

jobs and to live in a decent environment. That is why we must prevent the rise of nationalism of Europe, and stop the advance of populists. With this in mind, we offer on-the-job training for journalists, for example. And we are organising a story-telling workshop entitled “My Europe” during which young people will share their stories of a united Europe. This is essential, especially bearing in mind the European Parliament election next year.

And what about art? This year, “Artists in Discourse” takes place for the first time …

Artists are seismographs of societal change. They contribute many new perspectives to any debate. With over 20 events in three weeks, arts and culture are the glue of the Forum. “Artists in Discourse” is a new format this year. On that day, Martin Kušej, the incoming director of Vienna’s renowned “Burgtheater”, will discuss the importance of arts and culture in modern European society together with four guests. I look forward to this promising event.

Beim Europäischen Forum Alpbach zerbrechen sich internationale Geistesgrößen drei Wochen lang den Kopf darüber, wie man die Welt zum Positiven verändern kann. Was erwartet uns heuer?

Das Einzigartige am Europäischen Forum Alpbach ist, dass von Gesundheit über Wirtschaft bis hin zu Politik und Kultur die unterschiedlichsten Meinungen und Ideen auf den Tisch gelegt und diskutiert werden. Daraus ergeben sich konkrete Ableitungen und Lösungsansätze. Das Forum beginnt mit der Seminarwoche: Mehr als 700 StipendiatInnen aus ganz Europa und darüber hinaus kommen nach Alpbach, um mit renommierten WissenschaftlerInnen in ein Umfeld neuer Ideen und Denkweisen einzutauchen und den interdisziplinären Austausch zu pflegen. Wir wollen definitiv kein Event sein, bei dem sich ausschließlich die „Bosse” treffen.

Der Klimawandel bzw. Nachhaltigkeit spielen in der Tagespolitik oft eine untergeordnete Rolle. Wie werden die Themen beim Forum behandelt?

Die Umsetzung der UN-Nachhaltigkeitsziele ist kein „quick win”.

Trotzdem müssen wir uns dem Thema stellen. Heuer sind zum Beispiel das Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens und die UN-Initiative „Ethics in Action” in Alpbach. Im Rahmen mehrtägiger Retreats werden die TeilnehmerInnen ganz konkrete Maßnahmen zur Umsetzung der SDGs erarbeiten. Im Finanzbereich diskutieren wir das Thema „Impact Investing”. Von BlackRock und den großen Banken bis hin zur Soros Foundation diskutieren die „Big Player” in Alpbach Kriterien für sozial nachhaltige Investitionsformen.

Und die Zukunft der Europäischen Union?

Die Herausforderungen in der Europäischen Union werden heuer intensiver diskutiert denn je – schon alleine wegen der österreichischen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft. Bei den Politischen Gesprächen fassen wir ganz bewusst die heißen Eisen an – wie das Verhältnis zu Russland und den USA oder die Konflikte im Nahen Osten und in Nord- und Südkorea. Ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal des Europäischen Forums Alpbach ist es, dass hier alle miteinander reden können. Das ermöglicht es für unsere Gäste, in ganz unterschiedliche Richtungen Brücken zu bauen.

Ein Schwerpunkt ist auch die Stärkung der Demokratie. Wir sehen gerade, dass die nationalistischen und zugleich populistischen Tendenzen zu einem gefährlichen Pulverfass werden. Da müssen wir dagegenhalten. Wir wollen die liberale Demokratie bewahren, wir wollen, dass auch unsere Kinder noch Jobs haben und in einer vernünftigen Welt leben. Daher muss die weitere Renationalisierung Europas verhindert und der Vormarsch der Populisten gestoppt werden. Deshalb bieten wir u.a. journalistische Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten an. Oder wir organisieren unter dem Titel „My Europe” Storytelling-Workshops, in denen junge Menschen ihre Geschichten eines geeinten Europas teilen. Das ist gerade vor dem Hintergrund der bevorstehenden EUWahlen essentiell.

Und Kunst und Kultur? Heuer gibt es erstmals den Tag der „Begegnungen” KünstlerInnen sind Seismografen gesellschaftlicher Veränderung. Sie bringen viele neue Sichtweisen in Diskussionen ein. Mit mehr als 20 Veranstaltungen in drei Wochen bilden Kunst und Kultur einen roten Faden beim Forum. Neu ist heuer der Tag der „Begegnungen”: Martin Kušej wird mit Gästen den Stellenwert von Kunst und Kultur in der modernen europäischen Gesellschaft diskutieren. Ich freue mich auf eine vielversprechende Veranstaltung.

Shaping a sustainable future for Europe and beyond

The European Forum Alpbach brings together people from all countries, generations and disciplines who are hungry for knowledge. Amongst them are over seven hundred young scholarship holders from over 100 countries, who come to Alpbach to bring in their perspective and return home with suitcases bursting with constructive ideas.

Together with international partners, the European Forum Alpbach Foundation provides scholarships for hundreds of outstanding young people from all over the world to attend the programme for three weeks. You can find the names of our partners in the supporters’ section on page 133.

The time at the European Forum Alpbach often connects scholarship holders for their whole lives. The visible expression of their sustained engagement can be seen in the now 32 alumni networks from 23 different countries, which also pull off very successful scholarship programmes.

During the European Forum Alpbach, several of them will be on hand with help and advice for the participating scholarship holders in the “Standing Committee”. They organise the International Evening, fireside talks with exciting speakers and various side events. This year, the Club Alpbach Salzburg will take the reins of the Standing Committee.

Die Zeit beim Europäischen Forum Alpbach verbindet StipendiatInnen oft ein ganzes Leben. Sichtbarer Ausdruck ihres nachhaltigen Engagements sind die mittlerweile 32 Alumni-Vereine aus 23 Ländern, die auch sehr erfolgreiche Stipendienprogramme auf die Beine stellen.

Während des Europäischen Forums Alpbach stehen einige von ihnen im „Standing Committee“ den teilnehmenden StipendiatInnen mit Rat und Tat zur Seite. Sie organisieren den „International Evening“, die Kamingespräche mit spannenden SprecherInnen und verschiedene Sideevents. Heuer hält Club Alpbach Salzburg die Zügel des Standing Committees in der Hand.

My Europe –My Story

The scholarship holders of the European Forum Alpbach have a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and broaden their horizons. But do they also have the courage to leave their bubble and challenge others to a discussion about Europe outside of Alpbach?

How to tell the story?

Together with the European Parliament, the European Forum Alpbach is hosting a storytelling workshop to help young Europeans sharpen their tools for discussing European issues they are passionate about – be it climate change, working abroad, or borderless travel. On the eve of the 2019 European Parliament elections, the goal is for them to return home full of ideas and enthuse others with the European idea.

Die StipendiatInnen des Europäischen Forums Alpbach haben die einzigartige Gelegenheit, sich Wissen anzueignen und ihren Horizont zu erweitern. Aber haben sie auch den Mut, ihre „Bubble“ zu verlassen und sich außerhalb des Forums Diskussionen über Europa zu stellen?

Wie Geschichten erzählen?

Gemeinsam mit dem Europäischen Parlament veranstaltet das Europäische Forum Alpbach einen Storytelling-Workshop. Ziel ist es, junge EuropäerInnen mit dem notwendigen Handwerkszeug auszustatten, um europäische Themen zu diskutieren, die sie mit Leidenschaft erfüllen – sei es der Klimawandel, Arbeiten im Ausland oder ein Europa ohne Grenzen. Mit neuen Ideen im Gepäck kehren die jungen Menschen nach Hause zurück und machen sich für die europäische Idee und die EU-Wahlen 2019 stark.

Arbeitstreffen im Herzen der Alpen

Das Europäische Forum Alpbach vernetzt Menschen, die in Wissenschaft, Politik, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft die Zukunft Europas gestalten. Zahlreiche internationale Organisationen nützen daher die informelle und interdisziplinäre Atmosphäre Alpbachs für Arbeitstreffen und Retreats.

Alpbacher „ Impact Investing” - Deklaration

40 führende Persönlichkeiten aus allen Bereichen des „Impact-Investing” sind während der Finanzmarktgespräche in Alpbach und arbeiten im Rahmen eines Retreats an einer gemeinsamen Deklaration. Das Ergebnis sind klare Basisprinzipien, die alle im „Impact Investing” tätigen Personen, künftig unterzeichnen werden können.

Schlussfolgerungen und Ergebnisse werden im Konferenzprogramm vorgestellt und diskutiert.

The European Forum Alpbach aims to build new and inspiring networks between those who shape politics, the economy and society in Europe and beyond. Our international partners use the informal and interdisciplinary atmosphere in Alpbach for working retreats in order to find solutions to the main challenges they are facing.

Alpbach Declaration on Impact Investing

40 leading and influential people from all parts of the impact investing ecosystem will be in Alpbach during the Financial Market Symposium. Together, they will define the most important headline principles for making the impact investing. The output of the retreat will be a clear set of principles that everyone in the impact investment field can sign up to.

While the retreats are by invitation only, the conclusions of the gatherings form an integral part of the conference programme.

200 stuffed white rats: this is the striking reaction of artist Deborah Sengl to Karl Kraus’s seminal play, ‘The Last Days of Mankind’. In the presence of Deborah Sengl, the curator Günther Oberhollenzer will introduce her artwork while the young trombonist Christian Masser will give a musical introduction.

Mit 200 präparierten weißen Ratten reagiert die Künstlerin Deborah Sengl auf Karl Kraus’ bahnbrechendes Stück „Die letzten Tage der Menschheit“. Der Kurator Günther Oberhollenzer und der junge Posaunist Christian Masser führen in Anwesenheit der Künstlerin inhaltlich und musikalisch in ihr Werk ein.

Anya Schiffrin’s work in journalism took her to Turkey, Spain and Vietnam, among many other countries. Now, she is a renowned lecturer and researcher on investigative journalism, media and development. In her lecture, she speaks on the role of investigative journalism around the world and on the bravery of journalists reporting under repressive regimes, taking on subjects such as corruption and human rights.

Anya Schiffrin war als Journalistin unter anderem in der Türkei, Spanien und Vietnam tätig. Heute ist sie eine renommierte Vortragende und Forscherin auf den Gebieten investigativen Journalismus, Medien und Entwicklung. Her verses are as understated as they are spellbinding in their poetic power.

Die ladinische Dichterin Roberta Dapunt überschreitet mit ihrer Poesie sprachliche Barrieren. Sie lebt auf einem Bauernhof in Südtirol und stellt ihre Lebenswelt im Rahmen der Lesung literarisch vor: auf Ladinisch, Italienisch, Deutsch und Englisch. Ethics in Action is an initiative which brings together all world religions, development practitioners and business leaders to discuss the moral and ethical challenges of our times. Over the last two days, the group worked on the topic of social, institutional and corporate corruption. The outcomes of this working meeting in Alpbach will be presented in this evening plenary.

„Ethics in Action“ vernetzt hochrangige VertreterInnen aller Weltreligionen mit PhilosophInnen und PraktikerInnen. Fragen zu Ethik und Moral werden in Bezug auf aktuelle gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen beleuchtet. Im Rahmen eines 2-tägigen Retreats hat sich die Gruppe mit Fragen zu sozialer, institutioneller und geschäftlicher Korruption beschäftigt.

Democracies under pressure / Demokratien unter Druck

Building a democratic, united, and solid Europe is the fundamental goal of European integration. However, anti-democratic tendencies, social discontent, and political disenchantment are challenging cohesion in and between EU member states. What can we do in order to strengthen solidarity in Europe? The discussion will also be part of Breakout Sessions 7 ‘Civil society and populism’ and 17 ‘The media and populism’. His piece, which was commissioned specially for this year’s Forum, translates the research findings of renowned evolutionary biologist Lynn Margulis into sounds and musical loops. ALPBACH BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

From and to Alpbach there is a daily public bus line (bus line 4074), as well as a free shuttle service (from Wörgl via Alpbach to Inneralpbach). In addition, there is a free night shuttle from Böglerhof bus-stop to Inneralpbach-Reith-Brixlegg-KramsachRadfeld. The shuttle service is offered free of charge thanks to the support of our partner ÖBB. Upon registration at your accommodation you will receive the “Alpbachtal Seenland Card” which enables you to use the public bus free of charge during the entire duration of the Forum. The Alpbach cab company Taxi Moser offers special rates to the participants of the European Forum Alpbach. CHILDCARE AND KIDS PROGRAMME

We offer professional childcare for children from the age of 2 to 14 whose parents are registered participants in the European Forum Alpbach. Venue: Kindergarten (in the Volksschule Alpbach). On August 24, special additional activities for children and teenagers (aged between 7 and 17) are offered as part of the official programme of Ö1-Kinderuni and Junior-Alpbach.

The plenary sessions take place in the Congress Centrum Alpbach. The breakout sessions are held in the Congress Centrum, the Alpbach Secondary School (Hauptschule) and in different hotels. Most plenary sessions taking place in the Erwin-Schrödinger-Saal and Elisabeth-HerzKremenak-Saal are translated simultaneously into English and German. Earphones and receivers can be obtained at the door – please hand them back after the plenary session.
