Septic Tank Compliance when Selling
When it comes to selling a property with a septic tank or other private drainage system, there are important compliance factors that sellers must consider in order to ensure a smooth sale.
The regulations governing private drainage are more stringent than they used to be, and checking the system is functioning properly and meets current regulations, is crucial to avoiding delays in the transaction. A failure to address these compliance issues can, at worst, result in a buyer pulling out of a sale.
Here are the key steps to ensure compliance:
1. Septic System Inspection and Certification
A buyer’s solicitor will often require an inspection before an exchange of contracts, and sellers must normally provide certification that the septic system is in good working order. This inspection will evaluate the condition of the tank, drainage field, and other components to ensure they meet the standards set by The Environment Agency.
2. Repairs and Maintenance
If the inspection uncovers any issues with the septic tank, it’s typically the seller’s responsibility to make necessary repairs or upgrades. The buyer may request that repairs be made before the sale is finalized, or they may negotiate a lower price based on the cost of repairs, or if the tank needs replacing.
REGISTER YOUR INTEREST welborne.co.uk
Instagram: @welborneuk
LinkedIn: Welborne UK
3. Disclosure of Septic Tank Condition
Sellers must disclose the condition of the septic system to potential buyers. Omitting to disclose known issues with the septic tank can lead to future legal action after the sale. It’s important to be transparent about the age of the system, its maintenance history, and any previous problems or repairs.
4. Title Transfer Requirements
Depending on where you are selling, certain areas require proof that the septic system is compliant with local codes for the transfer of title. Ensure that all necessary permits and documentation are in place before finalizing the sale.
5. Septic System Maintenance Records
Keeping a record of regular septic tank maintenance (e.g., pumping and inspections) can help prove that the system is well-maintained and compliant. Having these records available for potential buyers can be beneficial and may prevent questions or concerns during the sale process.
Understanding and addressing septic system issues early in the process can help ensure a smooth sale of your property. We would be happy to offer further advice on this subject, should this be of interest.

Over the winter period the club may have been closed but members have not hibernated! They have taken part in two Kurling matches, one at the clubhouse (where the carpet was blamed for any wayward shots, instead of the bowling green!) and one with our friends at Wayfarer Place. The club has also played an indoor bowling match with a local bowling club which was a very enjoyable afternoon, I won’t mention the score as it is taking part that matters right? Moving on very swiftly ….. Members have also enjoyed a convivial Fish and Chip Supper at a local hotel and put their thinking caps on and attended a quiz and cream tea in the clubhouse with plenty of friendly banter!

Gardening Trends for April: Embracing spring with fresh ideas
April marks the heart of spring, a time when gardeners embrace the season's fresh energy. At the Hampshire Gardens Trust, we foster an appreciation for heritage gardens, but passion for the outdoors begins at home. As the days lengthen and temperatures rise, gardeners start sowing, planting, and rejuvenating their spaces. Here are some top gardening trends for April focusing on sustainability, creativity, and connection to nature.
Sustainable Gardening Practices
Sustainability is a key trend this spring. Practices like composting, mulching, and using organic fertilisers nourish the soil and reduce waste. Many gardeners are opting for drought-tolerant plants and water-efficient irrigation. Rainwater harvesting is also growing in popularity, allowing gardeners to reuse water and minimise waste.
Edible Gardens and Grow Your Own
Edible gardening continues to grow in popularity as people aim to reduce food miles and grow their own produce. April is the perfect time to plant and sow vegetables and herbs like lettuce, peas, and parsley. Edible gardens offer practical benefits and a sense of accomplishment. Raised beds and container gardening are great for maximising space, even in smaller areas. The Hampshire Gardens Trust’s Garden Plans for Schools programme introduces edible gardens to children in school, promoting healthy eating and hands-on environmental education.
Wildflower Meadows and Pollinator-Friendly Gardens
With the decline of pollinators like bees, many gardeners are turning to wildflower meadows. Planting native flowers such as poppies and cornflowers provides food and shelter for beneficial insects. Pollinatorfriendly gardens also feature nectar-rich flowers like lavender and daisies, contributing to vibrant, colourful gardens while supporting the environment.
Indoor and Container Gardening
For those with limited space, container gardening has become essential. April is a great time to start planting in containers, whether flowers, herbs,
or vegetables. For indoor gardening, houseplants like snake plants, devil's ivy, and spider plants remain popular. Biophilic design, which incorporates greenery indoors, improves air quality and well-being.
Low-Maintenance
Gardens
With busy lives, many gardeners are choosing low-maintenance designs that still provide beauty and functionality. Native plants, drought-resistant species, and perennial flowers reduce upkeep. Hard landscaping features like gravel paths and decking minimise maintenance, allowing gardeners to enjoy their space without too much effort.
Garden Design with Bold Colours and Patterns
As spring arrives, gardens are embracing bold colours and patterns. Vibrant hues like yellow, orange, and red are popular, with contrasting colours such as purple and blue creating eye-catching designs. Many gardeners are experimenting with “garden rooms,” creating themed areas such as Zen gardens with calming colours or lively spaces with vibrant flowers.
April is an exciting time in the garden, with trends that focus on sustainability, creativity, and practicality. Whether you’re starting an edible garden, creating a pollinator-friendly space, or experimenting with bold colours, these trends offer inspiration for all gardeners. With a bit of planning and care, you can make the most of this spring season and help your garden thrive. To learn more, join the Hampshire Gardens Trust at hgt.org.uk for garden lectures, open gardens, and outdoor performances this summer.
For 2025 the NGS have a new Ambassadornon other than Fiona Bruce - the well known Newsreader, and Broadcaster.
Commenting on her appointment Fiona says: “I am thrilled to be a new ambassador for the National Garden Scheme. I’ve been visiting National Garden Scheme gardens for as long as I can remember, it’s one of the great pleasures, so to be part of the charity is a total thrill. I love gardening, it’s a big part of my life. I have to say I’m not the most skilful gardener, but I make up for it in enthusiasm.

Mr Mac - April News
Last month, I mentioned that Apple was expected to update its entry-level iPhone, the SE. However, instead of an update, Apple discontinued the SE and introduced the iPhone 16e. The main drawback? The price, £599 for an entry-level iPhone. Apple justifies this by claiming it is “AI-ready,” but what if you have no interest in these new AI features? A great alternative is a refurbished iPhone 13 or 14, both of which offer excellent value. These models start at under £300 for an iPhone 13 and still deliver outstanding performance, including high-quality cameras and compatibility with the latest iOS. The lower price is mainly because they lack AI capabilities, but for most users, that won’t be an issue. I’ve recently set up several of these for clients, and if you opt for one in “excellent” condition, it will feel like new. Contact me for details!
Amazon has also announced Alexa+, a new premium version of Alexa included with a Prime subscription. It promises enhanced features while the standard Alexa remains free to use—at least for now. If you’re unsure what’s included, just ask Alexa! Meanwhile, Apple has launched the latest MacBook Air models. The 13-inch version starts at £999, and the 15-inch at £1,199, both featuring the new M4 chip and a stunning Liquid Retina display. These laptops offer fantastic performance and great value. I’ve set up many for clients and can help you do the same. For the best deal, consider buying from John Lewis, which provides a two-year warranty, double Apple’s standard one-year coverage, and often offers better prices. Finally, this month marks the end of Skype, as Microsoft shifts its focus to Teams. If you’re looking for free alternatives for video calls, you can still use Google Meet, WhatsApp Video, and Apple’s FaceTime.

Financial planning tips for entrepreneurs
It can be easy to neglect your own finances when you’re focused on growing your business. But creating a solid plan for both your business and personal finances can give you more confidence your hard work will pay off. Here are five financial planning tips for entrepreneurs.
1. Make the most of pensions
Relying solely on your business to provide for retirement is risky.
Making contributions into a pension could help you save for retirement. As a business owner, you can make your own tax-efficient savings into your pension and make employer contributions that are deductible against corporation tax.
Your accountant can help you make the most of all the personal and business tax reliefs.
2. Protect against risks
Insure not just your business premises and stock, but also what’s arguably your most valuable asset – yourself. Protection against death and illness could be crucial. Also consider key person protection and shareholder protection to minimise disruption should the worst happen to one of your key members of staff or shareholders.
Finally, make sure your will states who will receive your shares or business interest when you pass away.
3. Plan your exit strategy
Planning your exit early could reap rewards. Work with a financial adviser to determine your ‘magic number’ – how much you would need from a sale to achieve your desired lifestyle. The adviser can also help you work out how much your future lifestyle might cost, and whether your finances are sufficient.
Note that from April 2026, the 100% rate of Business Relief will apply to the first £1m of combined qualifying assets. 50% of relief will be available for any assets above this value. This will give an effective 20% IHT rate.
Investments that aren’t listed on markets of recognised stock exchanges, including the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), will no longer benefit from full relief – the 50% rate will apply to the entire sum.
4. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
While growing your business should be the priority, also consider investing across other asset classes, such as equities, bonds, and cash. This could help to cushion the impact if your company doesn’t perform quite as well as expected.
We can help you build a diversified portfolio that suits your individual needs and objectives.
5. Surround yourself with experts
At RBC Brewin Dolphin, we can introduce you to the right people at the right stage of your journey – whether that’s venture capital firms, lawyers, tax advisers or accountants. We’ve worked with thousands of business owners, supporting them in making the right decisions. With us at your side, you can concentrate on looking forward to the future with confidence.
We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

New TownAlresford Council
New Alresford Town Council & Sun Hill Junior School Eco Council joins Hampshire Hedgerow Initiative
Hill Junior’s Eco Council joined forces with New Alresford Town Council to support the Hampshire Hedgerow Initiative, an ambitious environmental campaign funded by CPRE Hampshire.
Fifteen children from the Eco Council gathered at Arlebury Park playground along with school staff, Councillors, NATC officers and local tree surgeon Chris Matthews to plant over 40 metres of native hedging, including hawthorn, field maple, hornbeam, and blackthorn. Their efforts contributed to a wider mission to restore Hampshire’s natural landscape.
The Hampshire Hedgerow initiative aims to create a continuous nature recovery corridor of hedgerows, linking the South Downs and New Forest National Parks. This green corridor will weave through Hampshire’s parishes, connecting woodlands, meadows, local nature reserves, and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
Hedgerows are vital for boosting biodiversity, capturing carbon, supporting food production, and strengthening the rural economy. We are very grateful to CPRE Hampshire for providing grant funding for the project, and also to the children of Sun Hill Junior School for joining in the planting so enthusiastically. We look forward to seeing our new hedge thriving.
Petanque at Arlebury Park
Petanque is a Boules games with a very long history, dating back through the Middle Ages to ancient Rome, and before that to ancient Greece and Egypt. Each Boule is 700gms in weight and the aim of the game is to get your Boule nearest to the jack, or cochonette (to give it its French name).
After the development of the all-metal boule, pétanque spread rapidly from Provence to the rest of France, then to the rest of Europe, and then to Francophone colonies and countries around the globe.
In Alresford, we have an active group who currently meet at the petanque court in Arlebury Park on Tuesday afternoons 2-4pm throughout the spring/summer (in fine weather).
If you fancy giving pétanque a go and can throw a boules approx. six to ten meters underhand, please contact the Council. The Tuesday group are keen to attract new members and NATC have also received interest in other sessions throughout the week, and longer throughout the season. So, if you can’t make a Tuesday, but would like to get involved in another group session, please let us know.
Alternatively, you can use the pétanque court at any time with your own boules. Just turn up and play. We also have our own set here for those who may want to try it out. Please pop into the office (Mon-Thurs 9-3:30) and we would be delighted to lend these out to you.
Exciting News! A Brand-New Lift is coming…
We are looking to install a new lift at Alresford Recreation Centre hopefully week commencing 27th May. This will bring improved accessibility to the first floor. The new lift offers a smoother, faster, and safer experience. We will announce further information nearer the time and appreciate your patience during the installation.

St Swithun’s prep win regional netball title
St Swithun’s Prep School in Winchester were crowned regional champions as they delivered a stellar sporting performance at the IAPS Regional Netball Tournament.
The all-girls squad went unbeaten throughout the whole tournament at King Edwards VI School despite some close games, and claimed a 7-4 victory in a hard-fought final against KES Prep School.
This win secures their place in the forthcoming IAPS National Finals where they will play against the top 20 schools in the country.
Competing against 15 schools from across the South East of England, Chloe E, Hennie E, Lizzie GB, Willow J, Arabella M, Dominique V and captain, Eva H, showed fantastic teamwork and are thrilled to now have the opportunity to compete at national level.
Team captain, Eva, commented, “Although we were nervous going into the tournament, we were also quietly confident as we have put a lot of work into developing our play and have even been practising every break time. We were really proud to be unbeaten in all of our games, especially the game against Newland House which was the toughest. We learnt a lot as a team throughout the tournament and are really looking forward to seeing how far we can push ourselves against new opposition at the Nationals. We are really excited!”
Head of St Swithun’s Prep, Liz Norris said, “We couldn’t be prouder of our prep netball squad for their dedication and perseverance on the netball courts to become regional champions. Not only have they accomplished something incredible for themselves, but as year 6 girls they are an inspiration to the younger pupils in our school. I wish them the best of luck for Nationals!”
The whole St Swithun’s community is incredibly proud of the squad’s achievement, and is excited about their participation at the National finals at Bryanston School.

There are some households for which replacement system funded by nutrient credits is a option. But this does necessitate using the planning system. I am hearing of unacceptable delays, please let Margot know if this is happening to you. It there is a problem of process your councillors can help.
Budget Meeting
At the Full Council Meeting on the 27th February the Council’s Budget for the next financial year was approved. Budget meetings are usually gruelling with last minute amendments appearing, extending the meeting into the small hours. We were spared this time.
The council’s immediate financial position is stable. However, as with many local authorities, it faces increasing budget pressure long term, which it is addressing through its transformation programme, focusing on reviewing contracts, creating an effective and efficient digital service and generating more income.
‘Going Greener Faster’ continues to be very much the basis for the Council Plan 2025-2030 as revised and agreed in January. Particular highlights are:
• Despite the possible financial threats over the horizon the Council is going to award a contract for retrofit work to improve the energy efficiency of their housing stock of £4.3 m per year for the next three years.
• We are continuing with our social housing programme with funds of £237.7 to be spend over the next 10 years, to meet their target of 1000 new homes.
• £135,000 additional budget for the costs of providing the food waste collection programme. The collection of food waste and its processing in bio-digesters will further reduce the carbon footprint of the district, by an estimated 1,900 tons per year.
• £460,000 one-off budget to fund the phased roll out of the food waste service from October 2025.
• £200,000 to be invested in resources for planning enforcement.
• £425,000 to be allocated for funding the next Local Plan requirement. (The current local plan is currently under review by the Planning Inspectorate, but the Government requires an up-dated version to meet new housing figures.)
• £2m to be allocated from reserves to the Property Reserve to fund maintenance of corporate properties.
There continue to be budget uncertainties as the Government Funding review for local governments has yet to report. Not being sure of
the council income for more than one year makes efficient financial planning difficult.
Local Government Re-organisation
A great deal of the energy of councillors and officers continues to be burnt up dealing with the Local Government re-organisation. The issue of a single unitary authority covering Hampshire is comparatively easy compared with the task of addressing the next level of local authorities. The Government wants to have more logical and consistent boundaries with similar populations. They seek to iron out the many anomalies that exist. This is not at all easy to achieve, given that the logic of economics, transport corridors, employment, housing space, are very often in conflict, not to mention human emotions. Many of the parish boundaries are very ancient. (The parish of Silchester has a length of boundary that is Roman!) At its simplest, Winchester forms a magnet for Alresford and the villages of the Itchen Valley and others that lie around it. Places like Bishops Waltham and Wickham are pulled more economically towards the Solent. Quite how lines drawn on a county map can create new administrative boundaries with creating more anomalies to be resolved remains to be seen. To revert to financial matters, Winchester’s has a balanced budget this year and in the near future. Some neighbouring districts have huge debts and others lack financial transparency. The Government says there are no funds to support the financially careless, or indeed those like Hampshire County Council loaded with hugely expensive statutory duties which will be some those of the Unitary Councils. There will be further opportunities to hear about local issues as the reorganisation process evolves, we recommend that you listen in to any available, they will be found at Devolution and Local Government Reorganisation: https://www.winchester.gov.uk/ no-listing/devolution-and-local-governmentreoganisation
Postal Vote Renewal exercise
The Elections Act 2022 introduced changes to the way people apply for a postal vote for applications received from 31 October 2023: all postal vote applications must contain the applicant's name, address, date of birth, national insurance number and signature
• the applicant's identity must be verified against records held by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). If this identity check fails, the applicant must provide evidence of their identity
• postal votes are now valid for a maximum of 3 years
All postal voters, who applied before 31 October 2023, must re-apply for their postal vote by 31 January 2026 in order to remain a postal voter.
We currently have over 17,000 voters who need to re-apply, so we have started the renewal process early to allow voters time to re-apply and The Electoral Registration Team time to process the applications in advance of any scheduled elections. Anyone who does not respond to this request will receive another invitation, closer to the postal vote expiry date of 31 January 2026. If they do not re-apply by the expiry date the postal vote will be cancelled. We are contacting all affected postal voters now to ask them to re-apply for their postal vote as soon as possible. The quickest and easiest way to renew is to reapply for a postal vote online: www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote
Winchester Council will send a letter or email to all affected postal voters in batches commencing March 2025. So that electors can spot a genuine email from us:
• the email title will be Request for postal vote reapplication
• the sender will be eregcanvass@winchester.gov.uk
Some members of the same household may be contacted in different ways depending on whether we have an email address or not.We are using emails where a voter has provided an email address to reduce the cost of sending letters by post.

Beavers set to bring biodiversity boost to South Downs wetland
A pair of beavers have been reintroduced to a South Downs stream to help restore waterways and create a flourishing wildlife haven.
Europe’s largest rodent, known as an “ecosystem engineer” for its remarkable ability to increase biodiversity, would once have been widespread across the UK but was hunted to extinction around 400 years ago.
Now a groundbreaking project, led by Meonside Farm and working with the University of Southampton and the National Park Authority, has reintroduced the charismatic creatures to a rare chalk stream near Petersfield, Hampshire.
The Beaver Trust has helped to relocate two beavers from Scotland to the contained twohectare site, where scientists will now study the ecological and geographical changes in the habitat over the coming years. Since the reintroduction in December, the pair are progressing well at the site and are being monitored by a wildlife cam.
The planting-eating mammal is a keystone species and one of nature’s most incredible ecological engineers. Through building dams, digging canals, and creating dead wood, “busy” beavers help maintain habitats where a large diversity of life can thrive, including many mammal, bird, fish, amphibian and insect species. Beavers also improve river health by preventing soil from surrounding fields being washed out to sea. With the trapping of carbon and nutrients, water quality is improved downstream and flooding can potentially be reduced.
Farmer Will Atkinson, who is leading the reintroduction, said: “This project is a great example of how landowners and farmers who work so hard to produce the nation’s food can also contribute to species recovery whilst protecting our precious watercourses.”
The University of Southampton’s School of Geography and Environmental Science, supported by funding from the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI), are carrying out research into how the habitat, ecology and hydrology change over time as beavers modify the river and floodplain.
The scientists will be sampling “Environmental DNA” – or eDNA – to build up an accurate picture of all forms of life on the site. All animals and plants leave some form of DNA imprint on an environment – whether it be a hair, saliva, mucus, skin fragment or a seed, for example. With new sophisticated DNA sequencing technology, researchers can now build up a profile of every species in a habitat simply by taking a small water or soil sample, rather than just relying on surveys by sight.
As well as the DNA sampling, the university’s team will be conducting detailed topographical surveys and testing changes in water flow and quality.
The research will help inform other reintroduction programmes of the beaver across Europe and better understand how to increase biodiversity.
The University’s Professor David Sear, who leads the research programme, said: “We are delighted the University is involved in this partnership. It is an important part of our civic and regional role to use our internationally excellent scientific capacity to support such initiatives.
“We are only just learning the role beavers played in the evolution of our rivers. We’re looking forward to understanding more about just how these animals transform chalk streams and to sharing that knowledge with other restoration practitioners and landowners.”
Working with the National Park’s Western Ranger team, fencing has been installed to create a perimeter enclosure around the site, which also contains an old duck pond and vegetation. The type of fencing is specifically engineered to keep beavers in.
Extensive consultation has taken place with the local community, with widespread support for the project. There will be opportunities for volunteers to get involved with various activities, including regular fence checks, habitat monitoring and photography.
The enclosed beaver site in Hampshire Jan Knowlson, Biodiversity Officer for the National Park, said: “Beavers are an amazing animal that were once an integral part of British wildlife and it’s wonderful to see a family setting up home in the South Downs National Park, where boosting biodiversity is one of our primary objectives.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how this project progresses and what changes are seen in the habitat. Beavers have not lived in the South Downs for over 400 years, so we’re taking ‘baby steps’ in terms of any reintroductions and still learning lots about their impact on ecosystems.
“These remarkable rodents are truly ‘busy’ in every sense of the word, literally building the structural diversity in wetlands that creates homes and refuges for so many other animals, such as otters, water shrews, water voles, kingfishers, dragonflies and freshwater fish.
“Water is a key aspect of the National Park’s nature recovery ambitions, so this project dovetails with so much of our wider work around improving and restoring wetlands and increasing awareness about the importance of water.”

Spring into self care with Dr Rachael Neall, Clinical Psychologist and Yoga
Teacher!
In the poetry of life, things can get busy and frenetic, with constant to do’s or time can feel empty and stagnant. How do we get the balance right as we move through spring?
It’s not just putting Mum at ease. It’s giving you peace of mind.
Let me introduce myself. I’m Rachael and I feel incredibly lucky to live and work in Alresford. In this topsy-turvy world, I am deeply passionate about guiding people toward choices that align with kindnessboth toward themselves and others.
Alresford offers so many wonderful ways to support well-being – too many to list here!
I am pleased to offer my contribution. As a Scientist-Practitioner, I have researched and experienced the benefits of Yoga. By increasing self-awareness and tuning into both mind and body, we can build a compassionate connection within ourselves, which then radiates outward into our relationships and community.
Yoga has been shown to benefit the brain, heart, muscles, and bones. It can help with depression and anxiety, which often lower energy levels and create barriers to physical activity. Techniques like progressive muscle relaxation and breathwork help reduce stress and make movement feel more accessible and enjoyable.
Engaging in activities that foster connection can boost self-esteem and resilience, helping us bounce back from life’s challenges. Stepping outside of our comfort zones and trying something new can be so uplifting.
So, If you’re looking for inspiration and want to improve physical health, confidence, and overall well-being, why not try one of my Yoga classes? I offer one-to-one sessions, morning flow classes to energize, and relaxed, accessible classes.
Yoga is not about touching your toes or achieving the perfect pose - it’s about cultivating balance, lasting health benefits and reaching joyful calm.

Alresford Surgery News
April 2025
Reminder - Afternoon Closure –
Thursday 3rd April
The surgery and dispensary will be closed from 12.30pm to enable all GPs & Nurses to attend a compulsory training meeting this afternoon. Our phone lines will not be open on this afternoon. If you require urgent medical attention, please call 111.
Patient Survey Results
Between 2020 and 2024 our patients told us they were not happy with our telephone system. Put simply, it didn’t work as anyone hoped and patients and surgery staff alike were frustrated with its limitations. A new phone system was installed in May 2024 and while we were delighted with the functionality from our end we wanted to ensure our patients were also happy with it. To that end we carried out a survey in November and December 2024.
With 203 respondents:
• 84% of respondents feel the new telephone system is better than our previous system
• 91% of respondents rate their experience of the telephone call-back facility as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ with the rest describing it as ‘fair’
• 92% of respondents rate their experience of our reception team when contacting the surgery by phone as ‘easy’ or ‘very easy’
• 90% of respondents are ‘somewhat satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the overall service they receive from Alresford Surgery
We appreciate everyone who took the time to complete the survey, your input is very valuable to us.
Good Friday & Easter Monday closure
Please make sure you have sufficient
supplies of your usual medications to last over the bank holiday period which you can order in a number of ways;
• In person at the surgery
• By post
• Via the NHS APP or Patient Access
The surgery will be closed on Friday 18th April and Monday 21st April. If you need urgent medical care you can access the Out of Hours service for advice, a face to face appointment or, if it is necessary, a home visit & the number to call is 111.
e-Consults will not be able to be submitted after 6.30pm on Thursday 17th April & will not restart again until 8am on Tuesday 22nd April. May we take this opportunity to wish all our patients a very Happy Easter.
COVID- Spring boosters
The practice will be offering the spring boosters COVID-19 from 1st April. COVID is more serious in older people and in people with certain underlying health conditions. For these reasons, people aged 75 years and over, those in care homes, and those aged 5 years and over with a weakened immune system are being offered a spring booster of COVID-19 vaccine. You should be offered an appointment between April and June, with those at highest risk being called in first.

Stress Awareness Month 2025 is observed annually in April
This year’s theme, #LittleByLittle, emphasises the transformative impact of consistent, small positive actions on overall well-being. Even seemingly minor steps taken daily toward self-care and stress reduction can yield significant improvements in mental health over time. Here are some practical suggestions to incorporate into your routine:
• Connect with someone: Check in with your support network or connect with someone new. A sense of belonging and community can help reduce feelings of loneliness.
• Go outside: Spending time outdoors can have a positive impact on mental well-being.
• Get moving: Physical activity, even in small increments, contributes to stress reduction.
• Be mindful: Practice mindfulness techniques to stay present and manage stress.
• Breathe deep: Deep breathing exercises can help calm the mind.
• Prioritise sleep: Make small adjustments to your bedtime routine. Wind down by minimising screen time, creating a techfree bedroom environment, and jotting down thoughts to set aside for the next day.
• House Analogy: Think of building mental well-being like constructing a house - one brick at a time. Each small action, such as taking deep breaths during a stressful moment or expressing gratitude daily, serves as a foundation for resilience.
• Ball Analogy: Just a 1mm change in the angle direction of a rolling ball can alter its trajectory significantly. Similarly, small positive actions accumulate and create a remarkable outcome over time.
• The Butterfly Effect + The Positive Ripple Effect: Lorenz’s butterfly effect theory highlights how seemingly insignificant initial changes can lead to significant consequences. Your small efforts contribute to a positive ripple effect in your life.
Remember, even the tiniest steps matter, and collectively, they build a stronger foundation for mental well-being. If you’re feeling stressed, consider checking your stress levels and explore ways to manage stress throughout the month.

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)
Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life. But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.
Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.
From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.
Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.
The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.
What is Ultra Femme 360?
Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.
Feel good…
Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?
This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.
Does the treatment hurt?
We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.
We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.
Book your treatment today. We should all feel good about our vaginas.

Dogged Walkers At The Ready
Some 50 walkers, with and without dogs, will be taking to the fields and lanes around Itchen Abbas next month, to raise funds for family support charity Home-Start Winchester and Districts.
Home-Start Events Chairman Chrissie Barlow will be bringing her best friend Reillly, a beautiful Irish setter. “Dogs are not compulsory,” said Chrissie. “You can come for the exercise or even just for lunch. It’s always a great opportunity to meet old friends and enjoy a walk in the spring sunshine and it’s a firm favourite in our fundraising calendar. We’ve held the walk in different parts of the Hampshire countryside every year since 2012 and dogged walkers have taken part, whatever the weather.”
“This is our eighth year of sponsoring the walk and we are very happy to be supporting Home-Start and the work that the charity does with young families in the area,” said event sponsor Dan Bliss of Gay Dog Boarding Kennels, who will be bringing his canine chum Cody the Lurcher.
The dog walk takes place on Friday 4th April and starts at Itchen Abbas Village Hall. Arrival is 10.45am and departure 11am prompt. There will be two walks of different lengths, which may include some stiles, and a hearty ploughman’s lunch will be ready to welcome walkers on their return with a choice of four delicious home-made soups prepared by the fundraising team.
Tickets at £15 can be booked online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/home-start-winchester-districts or email info@ home-startwinchester.org.uk, or by calling 07976 686979.

It’s time for Britain to step up and lead in the world
I’m sure many of you have been following the latest chaos from Trump. Things are moving so quickly that I’m sure by the time you’re reading this, some new major development has taken place. His wild and unpredictable actions like abandoning support to Ukraine, trade tariffs, and withdrawing from international bodies like the World Health Organisation (WHO), will have an effect on us here in the UK and in Winchester.
I’m proud that Liberal Democrats have been warning about Trump’s unreliability and calling for the government to work with allies
to the event’s success and to maximise its fund raising ability. If you can spare a few hours on race day or donate prizes for different age categories please contact us. Your support helps ensure that this wonderful tradition continues to benefit our community and charitable causes for years to come
End Polio Now!
The display of crocuses along The Avenue and elsewhere in and around Alresford has been spectacular this year. Over the years Alresford Rotary has planted many crocus corms not only to brighten up the Spring but also to draw attention to the significant contribution that Rotary worldwide has made towards eradicating Polio.
The last week of April is World Immunisation Week, its message being “Spread Awareness. Get Vaccinated. Save Lives”. The purple crocus is a reminder of the finger dye that signifies a child has been vaccinated. Since 1998 Three billion children have been vaccinated against Polio and the cases of Polio have reduced by 99.9% but the job will not be done until every child is vaccinated and Polio is stopped for good.
to support Ukraine where Trump will not. I know many people here in Winchester have long supported Ukraine and took in refugees. I’m proud of that support and proud to welcome Ukrainians here.
I am pleased to see our government recognise the need to lead on this security threat and work with our more reliable partners in Europe and the Commonwealth. The reality is that we do need to reverse the damage done to our armed forces by the previous Conservative government and begin to rebuild. Unfortunately this government has decided to meet these needs by sacrificing the poorest, with cuts to welfare and disability payments. At the same time, there are hugely profitable companies like the big banks, energy giants and tech industries who find it so easy to avoid paying their fair share.
The threat Trump poses to global public health could have significant repercussions for our health services here. He has withdrawn the US from the WHO, cast doubt on vaccines, and obliterated America’s overseas aid work almost overnight. To then see our own government look at all this and decide

that perhaps the UK should also cut its overseas development programmes is deeply alarming and a costly mistake.
This is not just a humanitarian issue for people overseas. It is a matter of national security. A threat anywhere in the world is a threat to the UK. Disease does not respect borders and with our NHS already struggling to cope each flu season, as our hospital in Winchester did over the winter, we cannot afford to abandon that line of defence which stops diseases taking hold before they spread to the UK.
With Trump taking America down an authoritarian path to our west, and Putin refusing to end his Imperial ambitions in the east, Britain is well placed to partner with democracies in Europe and Commonwealth allies like Canada to take a leading role in this world once again in a stand for freedom in the face of tyranny.

8 The High Street, Botley, Southampton, Hampshire, SO3O 2EA
Stood under a gum tree in full bloom, she surveyed the road ahead. The suggested “it’s only a five-minute walk” to the bakery was actually, upon Google-Map inspection, a fifteenminute walk to the bakery. And in a typical English mad dog stylie, at midday she was only now venturing forth. The thirty-one degrees heat felt considerably hotter; the pavement threw up burger griddle vibes and the white-hot overhead sun was straight out of Lawrence of Arabia.
It was her first visit to Australia and her first ever seventeen-hour flight. Somewhat concerning was the thought that the aforementioned very (very) long flight would have to be endured once again on the return journey. She reflected that she should have asked that couple on the plane to share the secret of their sleeping child. Whilst she herself had taken some over-the-counter sleep aid, napped, awoken and napped again, Child-in-the-next-seat was deep in slumber for hours. While she had sauntered down to the galley for snacks she didn’t really want, but nevertheless ate for something to do, Child-in-the-next-seat slept on. She fast forwarded any potential non-PG scenes in her viewing, just in case Child-in-the-next-seat awoke and was curious what the tired looking woman was watching. She needn’t have bothered. Child-in-the-next-seat was sparko. Impressive.
And here she was in the land down under, where her first encounter with a kangaroo
was a tranquil, soft-fur-stroking experience at Australia Zoo. Nostalgia for Skippy, Skippy, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo (complete with theme music) surfaced, although she suspected that a happenstance in the wild might have been a different event altogether. She’d seen the videos... Someone observed they looked like body-builders with a deer’s head, a mental image she couldn’t dislodge from her head.
She’d swum with the fishes, snorkelling over shipwrecks; a novel experience akin to being in an overstocked tropical aquarium. And she’d hand fed a dolphin, surprised that she was surprised they had little sharp and pointy teeth. Confirming their advanced intelligence, they gathered every evening for a free dinner from the well-trained tourists.
A Huntsman spider the size of her hand, sat above her head in her bedroom had been another first. Watching it skilfully captured in a salad spinner and released outside by the un-phased resident Aussie – also a first. And a lesson in compassion.
And here she was, stood on a pavement situated closer to the sun than Earth. On Venus maybe. Possibly Mercury. She contemplated the road to the bakery. With Louis Armstrong crooning in her head, (with a hint of disapproval?), she directed her feet to the shady side of the street. She scuttled from patch of shade to patch of shade, provided by an assortment of trees she knew not (but planned to Google search image later). Pausing in each circle of shadow, she sucked ferociously at her water
bottle and braced herself for the next blistering leg of her journey. Finally throwing her sweaty self through the bakery portal and into the air-conditioned sanctuary beyond, she bought exotic produce: pies.
It was, after all, Australia. Look past the king brown, the funnel web and the national obsession with any and all sport, the apple had seemingly not fallen far from Pom Central when it came to pastry products.
On the very (very) long flight home, she had time to reflect upon her adventure. Lots of time in fact, because she had not cracked the secret of sleeping like ‘Child-in-the-next-seat’. In between naps she watched whatever she liked, this time without any fast-forwarding, as her seating companions were older than she.
In any event, she couldn’t wait to return to the land of the much-maligned mullet. Even her close encounter with the scary spider would not induce her to throw shade on her antipodean experience. (Nor the minor shark attack that had happened near her snorkelling venue days after her visit.)
No, the only shade she might throw would be some extra on the not-terribly-shady side of the street to the bakery. She’d definitely again be braving the inferno to make the half hour, life risking, round trip. They did, after all, make exceedingly good pies.
Bishop's Sutton Celebrates Completion of New Church Roof
New Roof Completed at St Nicholas Church, Bishop’s Sutton Bishop's Sutton, 24 February 2024 – St Nicholas Church in Bishop’s Sutton is celebrating the successful completion of its long-awaited re-roofing project. Thanks to the dedication of the local community and generous grant funding, the historic Norman church is now fully restored and ready to serve future generations.
After 18 months of fundraising efforts and support from organisations including the National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Amaryllis Fleming Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation, the Benefact Trust and The Hampshire and the Islands Historic Churches Trust, the £250,000 project has been completed and officially signed off. Villagers raised an incredible £50,000 through events and personal donations demonstrating the community’s unwavering commitment to preserving their church.
During the works, over 100 villagers wrote personal messages on the underside of the handmade roof tiles. These messages will offer a glimpse into today’s community for those who find them when the rooftiles may next need to be replaced, a century from now. The Reverend Amber Beresford for St Nicholas Church said, “This essential project would not have been possible without the dedication and generosity of so many in the village of Bishop’s Sutton. People gave up considerable time to fundraise, manage grant applications, and oversee the work to completion. Their commitment has ensured that St Nicholas Church will remain a place of worship, community, and history for generations to come.”
St Nicholas Church, one of the oldest churches in Hampshire, dates back to the 12th century and retains many original Norman features. The need for a new roof was identified during a regular inspection two years ago.
To mark the completion of the project, the church will host two events:
• Saturday, March 1st at 6:00 pm – A short concert in St Nicholas Church, raising funds for Blood Cancer UK.
• Sunday, March 2nd at 11:00 am – A Service of Thanksgiving and Celebration for the new roof. Everyone is warmly invited to attend both events and celebrate this momentous achievement for St Nicholas Church and the community of Bishop’s Sutton.

The process for the Hampshire wide Strategic Mayoralty has started now the Government has accepted Hampshire’s bid to make the change. Strategic Mayor elections will be on the 7th May 2026.
Local Government Reorganisation is a separate work programme. LGR will result in several Unitary authorities of around 500,000 people in each. Elections will be in 2027 or 2028. When you read this, Southampton, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth , together with Winchester and all the other districts will have made their first proposals for Unitary Authorities to the Government on the 21st March. Charity takes on Great Wall of China challenge
After the success of last year’s trek through the Sahara Desert, a local charity has announced their latest fundraising overseas challenge. And this time, they’re heading to Asia!
Winchester Hospice will be taking on the Great Wall of China is their latest fundraising adventure and they’re now looking for people to join them.
Jo Westerman, fundraising officer for the hospice, said; “As one of the wonders of the
this month, but proposals made only reduce the deficit by £9.9m over four topics. These proposals to reduce costs in four areas including Adult Day Care services, Planned Highway Maintenance, and Children’s and Young People’s school & college transport Deadline 7 May.
There has been a lot of debate about the terrible potholes in this area, and how HCC chooses to spend our Council Tax. One of the four proposals is to reduce the planned highway maintenance . HCC propose not to include any money from the HCC funds, but limit the budget to the sum provided for this purpose by Government. I’m sure that many of you will want to comment on this proposal!
Changes in HCC transport costs to school and college are proposed too. The 1946 law is clear that children with special needs or on free school meals are fully entitled to free transport up to 16, but the County Council believes that post 16 to 25, this is not the case.
The proposal put forward by HCC is to provide these grants only if a young person is entitled to free school meals and an EHCP. It takes no account of the logistics of getting multiple children to school at one time. HCC is proposing to extend the scheme whereby they provide expenses for parents taking their own child to school or they will recover some of the transport costs. These options will be extended to more families. The initial proposal was also
world, The Great Wall of China features on the bucket list of so many people. This trek offers you the opportunity to explore a little visited part of it, guided by travel experts who help you immerse yourself in the culture of local communities.
Our overseas adventures are designed to challenge you but they are, with a little training, achievable and you’ll be joined by a group of like-minded people which makes this trip perfect for small groups or those who want to try something on their own, all while supporting the care delivered by the hospice.”
The team will depart from Winchester on Saturday 7 November 2026 and head to Beijing where their trek of one of the wonders of the world will begin. Participants will be away for a week, returning on Sunday 15 November 2026.
During the trip, your exploration of the wall will take you through wild and remote landscapes with distant views of green rolling hills and mountain peaks. You’ll stay
to charge parents 30% of the cost of transport which could be £3000 or even higher. Many residents have written to me about this saying how it will affect their own family. Councillors (including me) have challenged this but it has been decided that the consultation will go ahead. Please advertise to others if you have the opportunity. The public consultation on this and other proposed cuts runs from 12th March to the 7 May.
I spent a very happy afternoon playing with grandchildren at our local HCC owned country park. I really hope these aren’t victims of budget deficits- they are such jewels in the crown.
A Bus Service Improvement Programme grant of just over £13million was confirmed on the 6th March. BSIP is an ongoing grant programme, aiming for a full return to bus travel to pre-Covid-19 levels, but it doesn’t tackle the funding that is needed to improve rural services, nor the travel options for the 18.9% of our residents who don’t have access or ability to drive their own vehicle. As our population ages, this should be a priority. I will continue to make this case along with councillors from all parties. Will this all improve with promised Mayoral control of transport? I hope so.

in guesthouses throughout the trip which will allow you to gain an understanding of authentic Chinese culture as you sample some incredible local cuisine and discover more about the lifestyle of local people.
The trek is being organised by Winchester Hospice’s travel partner The Different Travel Company which has extensive experience in this type of overseas adventure. Ally Pinney, from the company, said; “We are looking forward to taking supporters of Winchester Hospice and immersing them in the beauty that will unfold before them as they explore sections of the Great Wall of China.
The team at Different Travel will take care of all the logistics ensuring the team has a trip of a lifetime whilst raising funds for such an important cause.”

Dog owners urged to play their part in protecting wildlife
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the Dogs Trust are urging dog owners to do their bit to protect ground-nesting birds by keeping their pets on leads during groundnesting breeding season.
Springtime brings with it the arrival of many migratory bird species, who travel thousands of miles to nest on nature reserves across the country. These birds are particularly vulnerable to disturbance between February and August.
Keeping dogs close by will help ensure that groundnesting birds such as skylarks, lapwings, and nightingales are not harmed during the breeding season. Unsupervised dogs can cause birds to abandon their nests, so it’s vital that they are kept close by and under control.
Interactions between people and nature at this time of year can have long-lasting effects, and a significant impact on the breeding success and survival rates of the birds.
Karen Kingston, Visitor Engagement Manager at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says:
“As a nation of dog lovers, we all want to enjoy the great outdoors with our furry companions. But we must also remember that we share these spaces with wildlife that depends on them for survival.
“One of the biggest challenges is how difficult these nests can be to spot, even for trained eyes, in open locations where you would expect to see them. Their natural camouflage makes them blend seamlessly into their surroundings, increasing the risk of accidental disturbance.
“By keeping dogs on leads during the ground-nesting bird season, we can help protect vulnerable birds and other species. Small changes in our behaviour can make a big difference, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in our beautiful landscapes.”
Barton Meadows Nature Reserve, near Winchester, is a vital habitat for skylarks. Males can be seen hovering high in the sky, singing continuously before parachuting back to the ground. Despite their aerial displays, skylarks nest on the ground, laying three to four eggs in well-hidden scrapes among the grass.
Due to disturbance, the Trust has had to fence off certain areas of Barton Meadows to protect nesting skylarks, ensuring they can successfully raise their young. By keeping to marked paths and keeping dogs on leads, visitors can help safeguard these vulnerable birds and support their continued breeding success at the reserve.
The UK lapwing population has plummeted by 55% since 1967 ¹. Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve near Totton provides a crucial sanctuary for these groundnesting birds, but their future here is uncertain.
As Karen explains: “To protect lapwings, we install seasonal fencing around nesting areas. This effort has led to more chicks successfully fledging each year. But if disturbed by dogs coming close to the fences or jumping over them, adult lapwings may abandon their nests, leaving eggs and chicks vulnerable to predators and the elements.”
Botley Woods, located between Southampton and Fareham, is a stronghold for nightingales - but their numbers are worryingly low - the UK breeding population has decreased by 42% (1995-2022).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has been working with Hampshire County Council, the landowners, to create the perfect habitat conditions at Botley Woods to support this declining species.
Karen adds: “We’ve been collaborating with rangers from Hampshire County Council on the practical management of scrub habitat that ground-nesting birds rely on. However, all our efforts will be in vain if dogs disturb the birds.”
Farlington Marshes Nature Reserve, located on the outskirts of Portsmouth, is a crucial sanctuary for ground-nesting birds, including lapwings, redshanks, and skylarks.
This special habitat provides a safe space for these vulnerable species to breed, but disturbance from dogs remains a serious threat to their survival.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is working tirelessly to protect these birds by ensuring key nesting areas remain undisturbed, particularly during the delicate breeding season.
Arreton Down Nature Reserve, located on the Isle of Wight, is a rich chalk grassland habitat that supports a diverse array of wildlife. Notably, it provides a haven for ground-nesting birds such as skylarks and meadow pipits.
The skylark, renowned for its high, hovering song flights, nests directly on the ground, creating well-camouflaged scrapes among the grass and low vegetation. These nests are extremely vulnerable to disturbance, as even a brief interruption can cause adult skylarks to abandon their eggs or chicks,
leaving them exposed to predators and the elements.
The meadow pipit, a small, streaky brown bird, constructs cup-shaped nests on the ground, often concealed among grass or heather. During the breeding season, meadow pipits perform a distinctive 'parachute' display flight, fluttering and descending slowly while singing. Once common and widespread, the meadow pipit has been in decline since the mid-1970s, resulting in the species being included on the Amber List of UK birds of conservation concern.
Many dog owners are passionate about nature and want to avoid harming it. However, even the most well-behaved dogs can unintentionally cause distress or damage wildlife, simply by following their natural curiosity.
Birds perceive dogs as predators and when dogs roam freely, birds may abandon their nests, leaving eggs and chicks cold and unprotected.
To protect these vulnerable birds during their nesting season (February to August), it is crucial for visitors to keep dogs on leads, ensuring that these species can successfully raise their young without disruption.
Dr Jenna Kiddie, Head of Canine Behaviour at Dogs Trust, says: “Dogs enrich our lives, but they also bring a level of responsibility. Whilst many of us enjoy taking our dogs for long walks, especially as it becomes a bit warmer, we urge dog owners to consider their surroundings, particularly when visiting areas where they might encounter wildlife.
“When visiting rural areas, owners should keep their dogs under control and ensure they do not worry other animals or stray from the path, as well as dispose of their dog's waste appropriately. We would advise keeping your dog on a short lead, and close to you, especially whenever livestock are nearby. It is important to remember that chasing is normal dog behaviour, and that any dog is capable of chasing, irrelevant of breed, type, age or size. We would encourage owners to explore training options such as the Dogs Trust’s Dog School.”
From designated walking paths to understanding the changing wildlife seasons, The Wildlife Trusts say there is plenty that people can do to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience at its reserves – on two legs or four. For
