SOLAR PV MONTH: Innovative Solar PV applications for the

public and private sectors

Solar PV has long been synonymous with rooftop arrays on warehouses, schools, or office blocks. But the landscape is changing rapidly. As demand for decarbonisation accelerates and estate managers face increasing pressure to maximise on-site generation, new applications for solar PV are emerging that go far beyond the roof…

Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV)

One of the most exciting trends is the rise of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV): solar modules built directly into the fabric of a building. From solar glazing in windows to cladding and shading systems, BIPV offers dual functionality: generating clean energy while serving as a construction material.

For schools, universities, and corporate campuses, BIPV provides a highly visible statement of sustainability while reducing the need for additional land or roof space. Advances in aesthetics, such as coloured, patterned, or semi-transparent PV, are making it easier to blend solar into modern architectural design.

Solar Carports and Canopies

Car parks are increasingly being recognised as underutilised real estate for solar PV. Solar carports

and canopies not only generate renewable energy but also provide weather protection for vehicles and a platform for integrated EV charging.

Local authorities and NHS trusts are already trialling solar carport projects, using them to support fleet electrification strategies. For private sector estates such as retail parks or logistics hubs, they offer a visible way to demonstrate sustainability commitments while unlocking new revenue streams through EV charging services.

Floating Solar

With land availability a growing challenge, floating solar (floatovoltaics) is gaining traction on reservoirs, lakes, and water treatment facilities. By reducing evaporation and keeping panels cooler, floating solar can actually improve efficiency.

Water utilities, industrial sites with lagoons, and universities with large estates are exploring this option as a way to expand renewables capacity without compromising valuable land assets.

Hybrid and Off-Grid Applications

Solar PV is also being integrated with other technologies—such as heat pumps, CHP, and battery storage— to create hybrid systems that reduce grid dependency and improve resilience. Off-grid or behind-the-

meter systems are particularly attractive for rural schools, hospitals, and manufacturing sites where grid reliability is a concern.

A Strategic Opportunity

For energy managers in both the public and private sectors, thinking beyond the roof opens up new possibilities to meet carbon targets, improve resilience, and showcase leadership in sustainability.

By embracing innovative applications like BIPV, carports, and floating solar, organisations can transform overlooked spaces into productive assets, delivering both environmental and economic returns in the drive to net zero.

Carbon offsets demand set for recovery

New research indicates that while the carbon offsets market has experienced a significant slowdown since 2021, primarily due to scandals surrounding project quality and overstated impacts, better news may be around the corner.

With net-zero targets becoming non-negotiable for governments and corporates alike, demand is expected to rebound, driven by a shift toward high-quality, removalbased solutions and stricter market standards that could redefine the sector’s long-term growth trajectory.

GlobalData’s latest Strategic Intelligence report, “Carbon Offsets,” reveals that 47 out of the 100 largest listed companies by market capitalization are purchasing carbon offsets, but the demand has been flat since 2021 due to concerns over offset quality.

Pinky Hiranandani, Strategic Intelligence Analyst at GlobalData, said: “As a result, companies that remain in the market are focusing on obtaining high-quality offsets, often using carbon ratings agencies or shifting from avoidance to removal offsets. This is especially evident in the tech sector, where giants like Microsoft and Google are investing heavily in offsets to meet ambitious 2030 net-zero targets.”

According to the report, the long-term trajectory of the carbon offsets market will hinge on six pivotal factors: sustained corporate commitment to net zero targets amid growing anti-ESG sentiment; the scalability of carbon removal technologies; the ability of carbon ratings agencies to elevate market standards; advancements in monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems; the integration of offsets into emissions trading frameworks; and the establishment of international consensus on cross-border offset trading.

The energy and technology sectors are the largest buyers of carbon offsets, with Shell and Microsoft being prominent players. In particular, the demand for carbon removal offsets is gaining traction, with companies like Microsoft leading the charge. However, the high costs associated with these technologies pose challenges for scalability.

Hiranandani continued: “As the market evolves, there will be an increasing shift towards carbon removal technologies, which offer clear evidence of permanent climate benefits. Companies must navigate the complexities of offset quality while balancing their climate commitments.”

ENERGY STORAGE: Storage procurement priorities for energy and FM leaders

Facilities managers and energy leaders attending the Energy Management Summit face growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, stabilise energy costs, and meet grid decarbonisation goals, energy storage has emerged as a powerful enabler of energy resilience and optimisation. Choosing the right digital storage partner is not just about battery capacity, it’s about aligning with the right technologies, services, and support to ensure long-term operational and financial value…

1. Software Integration and Energy System Compatibility

One of the most important procurement considerations is the integration of storage systems with wider energy infrastructure. The chosen partner should offer seamless interoperability with Building Management Systems (BMS), energy management platforms, and renewable generation assets (such as solar PV). Advanced platforms now support AI-driven demand forecasting and automated energy shifting to maximise selfconsumption and avoid peak tariffs.

Facilities teams should assess whether the storage software supports real-time monitoring, performance analytics, and remote diagnostics, and whether it integrates with broader CAFM or IoT-enabled platforms.

2. Lifecycle Cost, Not Just Capital Expense

The upfront cost of battery storage

is only one part of the equation. Facilities leaders must work with partners who can provide detailed lifetime cost modelling, including expected performance degradation, maintenance requirements, and total cost of ownership (TCO) over a 10–15 year period. Some providers now offer “Storage-as-a-Service” models that reduce capital burden and tie payments to verified energy performance.

Procurement teams should also evaluate access to flexible finance options or leasing models that align with budgeting cycles in both private and public sector operations.

3. Warranty and Aftercare Support

Given the long operational life of storage assets, robust warranties and aftercare support are critical. Suppliers should offer comprehensive warranties that cover both hardware and software, as well as clearly defined service level agreements (SLAs) for technical support, maintenance, and software updates.

Onsite support availability, UKbased helpdesks, and remote issue resolution capabilities should all factor into the partner assessment process.

4. Grid Services and Revenue Participation

Increasingly, storage solutions enable participation in demand response and flexibility markets. A strong partner will help facilities

navigate opportunities to generate new income streams, such as providing frequency response services to National Grid or optimising energy use in line with dynamic pricing. Partners with proven market participation experience can offer cooptimisation platforms and access to trading desks.

5. Track Record and Sector Relevance

Finally, the right digital storage partner should have a proven track record of deployments in comparable facilities, whether that’s hospitals, universities, logistics hubs or retail portfolios. Demonstrated experience in regulatory compliance, safety, and sector-specific challenges ensures smoother delivery and faster ROI.

By selecting a partner who understands the complexity and opportunity of storage, energy and FM leaders can unlock powerful benefits in efficiency, sustainability, and cost control.

Measure. Optimise. Save.

Measure with wireless submetering sensors with cloud based dashboard shines a light on data darkness.

Sensors available for any application and are easily scaled to any size of business.

Two Blues Solar

07899 811 575 / rachel@twobluessolar.com / twobluessolar.com

Two Blues Solar helps businesses obtain the cost and carbon benefits of on-site solar without any upfront capital required. We fund 100% of the installation and long-term maintenance costs of rooftop, groundmount or carport solar. We then enter a long-term contract with the building occupier to sell them the energy they use at rates that are typically 20-50% lower than their prevailing energy market rate. Our “Power Purchase Agreements” are available to landlords, owner occupiers and tenants but are best suited to businesses with a reasonably high energy consumption across one or multiple sites. Our fullyfunded solar solution takes away the cost and hassle of on-site solar. We fund and manage everything from feasibility assessments, planning, installation, grid connection, lifetime operations, maintenance and sustainability reporting.

We understand the challenges you face—balancing cost reduction, meeting ESG targets, and keeping operations running smoothly. That’s where we can help. Our free smart thermostats seamlessly integrate with your building’s electrical heating and cooling systems, optimising energy use during peak times. The result? Up to 15% energy cost savings and 70% lower carbon emissions, all with zero upfront investment or ongoing fees—and no disruption to your operations. With quick installation and ongoing support, Voltalis is your partner in making energy savings straightforward and stress-free. Let’s connect at the Energy Managment Summit to discuss how we can help you achieve your goals. 07542
