It’s time for our annual deep dive into our local culinary scene, and why not now? With patio season upon us and all the openings and closings that peppered the previous 365 days or so possibly behind us, we thought we might as well take our temperature. Spoiler alert: Things are looking up, and I’m not just saying that as just another pollyannish annoyance. Read more about it on pg. 9. No matter what’s happening in the board rooms, which are probably more like casual bars these days, there’s still a ton of foodstuff action to be had in town. And there are recipes to tackle (pg. 29). And bands to see when filling our bellies (pg. 41). And Easter brunches to enjoy (pg. 27). And, well, the list goes on. Just tie on your bib and jump on in. As my old man used to say, mangia! — Anthony Mariani

‘Soul on a Plate’

There’s lots to love about our dining scene, but could it be better?

In 2022, Fort Worth became the 13th most populous city in America while maintaining the rank of the fifth most populated within the state. In theory, one would believe Fort Worth to be buzzing with an energetic and tantalizing dining scene full of new openings and news of upcoming openings, but, sitting in the shadow of neighboring Dallas, Fort Worth is often overlooked. What that loosely translates to is that without being spotlighted as a major cosmopolitan city where there is a constant flow of corporate cash, Fort Worthians rely heavily on local support without the glitzy hullabaloo.

The latest trending “hot spots” have been attached to newly opened hotels like the Crescent, Bowie House, and Sandman, while more lowkey establishments like Atlas, Gustos Burgers, and Buena Vida Taqueria have also been warmly welcomed.

Fort Worth seems to have become a magnet for regional chains from other Texas cities. Wabi House’s first location was in Dallas, and Austin’s Nickel City made Fort Worth its second home. More recently, three places

Atlas, Hudson House, and Musume came from Dallas. Rarely do Fort Worth concepts make it outside city limits, though two do come to mind. Fuzzy’s Tacos put on a clinic for national growth, and it’s been exciting watching Coco Shrimp start its North Texas domination.

Dallas tends to attract and produce national chains, both fast casual and high end, although locally owned hospitality groups such as Duro Hospitality, Imperial Fizz, and Vandelay Hospitality Group have created burgeoning empires, giving Fort Worth something to brag about. Local restaurateurs such as Chef Marcus Paslay and his From Scratch Hospitality and Chef Felipe Armenta’s Far Out Hospitality have managed to cement multiple concepts that can rival most in Dallas either by cuisine or interior design. Armenta made a huge strategic move by hiring away Michelin-starred chef and TV personality Graham Elliot from his restaurants in the Windy City and bringing him to Cowtown.

Local veteran chef and owner Jon Bonnell of Bonnell Restaurant Group

said, “With plenty of new openings this year, the number of great dining options continues to grow.”

Fort Worth is experiencing unprecedented growth as new apartments, condos, and subdivisions pop up seemingly every day, and while this is attractive to restaurateurs, quantity doesn’t necessarily equal quality. We aren’t immune to national chains. Fortunately, for the most part, they are relegated to our suburbs. Right where they belong.

Wherever you look, food is big business. In 2023, Texas achieved two milestones, according to Texas Restaurant Association CEO Emily Williams Knight. “The food service industry has become Texas’ largest private sector employer with nearly 1.5 million employees, and it finally surpassed the $100 billion annual sales threshold, with nearly $107 billion in sales.”

Unfortunately, labor woes still present an issue. Only 48% of Texas restaurants have enough staff to support the demand at the table.

Jeffrey Yarbrough shared Williams Knight’s sentiment. “Fort Worth’s dining scene isn’t necessarily seeing signs of economic troubles that many cities across the country are experiencing. However, labor is a whole other issue.”

A local restaurateur who has served as president of the Texas Restaurant Association, Yarbrough was instrumental

had they not closed in July 2021, turning that marginal hole into a gaping one.

And that wasn’t all for the hippest neighborhood in town.

In 2023, when local Chef Andrew Dilda announced the opening of his Eazy Monkey, there was an air of excitement at the return of Chinese cuisine to Near South. This was followed by the announcement that Le’s Wok would transition to Teddy Wong’s. If the neighborhood could support two Chinese concepts for years, it should be able to do so again. Wishful thinking.

Sadly, after mere months and amid many accusations, drama, and rumors that pitted employees against ownership and business partners against each other, Eazy Monkey quietly bit the dust while Teddy Wong’s continues to thrive as it has since doors opened last year.

After Eazy Monkey’s closure, public feedback indicated that the Tex-Asian menu didn’t resonate well and was almost too creative for its own good. For my Fort Worth Weekly review, I found the food adventurous and fun, understanding that it was more of a fusion than anything else, while Teddy Wong’s is straightforward, with no frills but a unique concept on its own plus a robust wine menu. Who knew that dumplings and fermented grapes would be so compatible?

“The price of food and labor has never been higher, so making a profit in the restaurant business is more difficult than it’s ever been,” Bonnell continued. “There will be more restaurant closings as we navigate these difficult times, but the dining scene for now is alive and kicking!”

in waking up Deep Ellum in the 1990s by opening Art Bar, Blind Lemon, and Club Clearview, and he created Teddy Wong’s with Chef Patrick Ru of New York City in the former Le’s Wok space on the Near Southside.

Le’s was a beloved institution on a desolate portion of Rosedale Avenue which shuttered during COVID in May 2021 due to family illnesses, leaving a marginal hole. It was one that longtime neighborhood darling Cannon Chinese was positioned to pick up

When the owner of a place in San Miguel, Mexico, that is considered to possess the world’s best rooftop patio decided to open a second location, he overlooked Dallas, Austin, and Houston — and, heck, also New York City, Paris, and Lubbock and opened Quince here in the Fort, along the Trinity River not too far from where he took classes as a TCU undergrad. This news of owner Brian Sneed’s homecoming broke around the same time Chef Juan Ramon Cardenas Cantu announced his partnership with Fort Worth restaurant veteran Adrian Burciaga to bring the second location of Don Artemio from Saltillo, Mexico, to the Cultural District along West 7th Street. In January, Don Artemio received national recognition as a 2023 James Beard semifinalist. Quite a feat for a restaurant still in its infancy, not yet celebrating its two-year anniversary.

But then there was Chef Victor Villarreal’s La Onda. After landing on Bon Appétit’s 2022 list of best new restaurants, the Race Street eatery soon closed. Following a brief hiatus, Villarreal reincarnated his concept inside Hotel Revel for only a couple of months before shuttering again. Being on Race Street, which is not heavily trafficked as it continues to develop, could be to blame, but Tributary Café served Cajun and Creole fare on that same stretch of road for years before closing last year only when Chef Cindy Crowder Wheeler decided not to extend the lease. It makes you wonder why La Onda and its upscale menu didn’t work inside a hotel in a vibrant part of town. It had less success in a more bustling neighborhood near an continued on page 10

Christina Berger Courtesy of Ate This Food, and I Liked It/Facebook Former Weekly associate editor Eric Griffey, who runs the popular Facebook group I Ate This Food, and I Liked It feels Fort Worth isn’t even a Top 5 food city in Texas. Who says our scene’s not sophisticated? Not the (Dallas) folks behind Atlas in SoMa.

intersection that sees hundreds of vehicles per day than in its slower, original spot. And the cuisine was superb.

A former Weekly associate editor has some thoughts. Runner of the popular Facebook page I Ate This Food, and I Liked It and all around bon vivant, Eric Griffey thinks geography isn’t the only thing with an impact on what happens here in our backyard.

“We don’t have a sophisticated big-city food scene,” he lamented. “That’s not to say that we don’t have some great restaurants, but it’s a tough market for small, locally owned places that don’t specialize in dead cow parts. Aside from a few outliers, we don’t really have eateries you can point to and say, “There. That is a great example of what is unique about the Fort Worth culinary arts scene.’ ”

Perhaps this lack of sophistication doomed La Onda and Magnolia Avenue’s innovative Beast & Co. when it closed in 2023 — after owner Dustin Lee berated the entire neighborhood in a social post, blaming everyone for a lack of support. Any good points he may have made about the scene in general were overshadowed by his less than gracious tack.

Griffey also said we don’t have enough chefs bearing their souls on their plates, and when they do, creativity is punished.

“We are overrun by regional chains with the capital to survive rough patches. Those places are killing local character. Think about Clearfork and all the admittedly good restaurants there. You could pick up that whole development, move it to Ames, Iowa, and you wouldn’t have to change a single thing. It’s completely anodyne. Fort Worth is growing, has grown faster than its capacity to support new local restaurants, and, consequently, we’re left with a glut of McMediocrity.”

Customers can be fickle and typically stick to what they know. Often, they prefer what’s comfortable, what they’re used to. And not to knock any local business that has capitalized on the apathetic palate, but people know they can expect the same sandwich every time from one of our many burger joints or the same enchilada combo from any number of our Tex-Mex spots. Trends come and go, and Fort Worth doesn’t always lend itself to the cutting edge. But we have some of the best taquerias in the state along with an exceptional Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese dining scene in neighboring Haltom City, and that diversity is something to celebrate. And while we have much to be appreciative and grateful for, we still enjoy our meat and potatoes, and that likely won’t change anytime soon.

Griffey summed it up best. “Until the people of this town demand better — and learn the difference — we’re stuck where we are. We’re not even a Top 5 food city in this state. Enjoy your medium-well steaks.” l

STUFF

And Boom Go the Sticks

Per usual, Globe Life Field offers a full roster of tasty treats.

Food and baseball go hand in hand, especially at Globe Life Field.

Fans coming to Rangers home games this year can dig into several new mouthwatering delicacies while watching the world champions defend their title.

North.

That planning was cut short as the Rangers’ season did not end until November 1, after the team’s first World Series. Then there was the victory parade and all the hoopla that followed, so the kitchen folks did not begin work until the middle of November, which did not give them much time. Still, they came up with some winners that will rival what you’d find at the other 29 Major League ballparks.

A new take on the Rangers’ classic 2-foot feast, The Boomstick Triple Play features two Nolan Ryan Beef patties topped with Rico’s Nacho Cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles and served on an 8-inch bun; a footlong Texas Chili Company hot dog topped with Texas Chili Company chili, Rico’s Nacho Cheese, grilled onions, and jalapenos; and a towering helping of Tostitos tortilla chips topped with chili, nacho cheese, grilled onions, and jalapenos. Available at the Texas 24” stand at Section 132 for $32.99.

Chef Cris Vazquez.

It’s a competitive endeavor as every team tries to serve up the most eccentric and outlandish yet tasteful food possible.

The Rangers’ tasty ’24 creations, said Lindsey Krokus, who teaches a culinary class at Arlington Martin High School, are “just amazing, truly a home run in creativity and taste. Fans are really in for a treat.”

The Korean Pork Steamed Buns are anchored by slow-cooked Korean-style pulled pork in a pillowy soft-steamed Bao bun, topped with a fresh cilantro slaw and an unagi sauce and spicy mayo drizzle. Available in the concession stands at Sections 124 and 230 for $15.99.

The Chicken Empanadas are handmade

and 225 for $14.99.

Whataburger has a new location at Globe Life Field. The ballpark outpost near Section 105 of the legendary Texas chain will feature many of the beloved brand’s classic items, including the No. 1 Whataburger (100% fresh, never-frozen beef patty, toasted 5-inch bun, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and pickles) as well as fries, onion rings, and creamy shakes.

Golden Chick, which has had a presence in Globe Life Field since Opening Day 2020, will now offer the Chicken & Waffle Taco: a classic chicken tender fried to perfection, drizzled with a sweet and tangy honey sriracha sauce, served on a fresh waffle “taco,” and topped with bacon bits for the perfect finishing touch. Available at the Golden Chick stand at Section 128 for $14.99 for two.

Arlington Eats, which is located near Section 101, will again on a rotating basis feature Arlington-based restaurants Ella B’s Restaurant, Prince Lebanese Grill, Sugar Bee Sweets Bakery, The Tin Cup, and Cartel Tacos, along with newcomers Shrimp Doc and TJ’s Catfish & Wings Arlington Eats will be open for all home games in 2024.

Then there are the always-popular nachos. The Texas Rangers lay claim to offering the first nachos at a ballpark. The year was 1976. That year, nachos outsold popcorn and Cracker Jack. The hot dog,

Grilled to perfection, the Ranchero Chile Relleno Dawg is served on a fresh Martin’s potato roll and topped with grilled onions. Available in the concession stands at Sections 121 and 225 for $15.99.

Hurtado Barbecue, which made its debut at Arlington Eats in 2022 and became the official barbecue partner at Globe Life Field in 2023 with a standalone location at Section 141, will serve the Milanesa Taco. One of the most popular items at the restaurant showcases chicken-fried brisket served with creamy gravy and chile de arbol in a warm flour tortilla. Due to the popularity, a second “express” Hurtado location will be added to the Upper Concourse near Section 201 in April.

For the Meatball Garlic Knot Sliders, the cooks smother classic Italian-style meatballs in marinara sauce and serve them on buttery garlic knots topped with parmesan cheese. Available in the concessions at Sections CL23, 133, and 230 for $17.99 for three sliders.

The Texas Tacos are crunchy red taco shells lined with a soft flour tortilla and your choice of classic taco meat or grilled chicken, topped with lettuce, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, and either salsa verde or salsa roja. Available in the concession stands at Sections 17, 106, and 226 for $14.99.

Dixie and her Tupperware return for a party at McDavid Studio next month.

Those of us who grew up down here are pretty familiar with the concept of Tupperware parties. Avon, Herbalife, and Mary Kay Cosmetics, the godmother of all product peddlers, are among the home-based businesses that cropped up in the 1950s and ’60s with products that appealed to Southern ladies looking for a way to make money “outside

the home” by inviting friends, family, and neighbors to parties. Hell, you still see pink Cadillacs on the roads to this day! Laugh all you want, but these concepts were quite liberating for women back then.

One “Tupperware Lady” in particular is laughing all the way to the stage. Performing Arts Fort Worth, the nonprofit owner and operator of Bass Performance Hall (525 Commerce St, Fort Worth, 817-212-4280), is bringing the sensational off-Broadway show Dixie’s Tupperware Party to McDavid Studio

for a limited, five-show engagement ThuSun, Apr 11-14, as a special addition to the hall’s Popular Entertainment Series lineup.

As the “fast-talking, gum-chewing, ginger-haired Alabama gal bringing your grandma’s Tupperware party into the 21st century,” Dixie Longate tells funny stories, imparts homespun wisdom, and demands audience participation. Part drag, part variety show, and all fun, Dixie’s Tupperware Party “leaves your heart a little bigger and your food a little fresher.”

According to her somewhat facetious backstory, she began selling Tupperware as part of her parole conditions in 2001 and became one of the country’s top sellers within a few years. Friends told her she should turn her living room parties into a theatrical show, and she did just that starting in 2007. continued on page 17

The Food Tube Streaming video picks up where TV cooking shows dropped the ball.

Remember when TV cooking shows actually taught you how to cook? These days, it’s Guy Fieri going to some out-of-the-way barbecue joint and the camera taking a close-up of him as he bites into their pulled pork sandwich and goes, “Mmmmm.” Sure, the restaurant can probably use the publicity, but just once, I’d like to see him spit out the morsel and say something like, “That must be what evil tastes like!”

If you want to cook, you need to hit your laptop instead of your TV, because YouTube has all the cooking instruction videos you can handle.

You won’t be surprised to find out that as a film critic, I’m a fan of the Babish

If you want to cook, you need to hit your laptop instead of your TV.

Culinary Universe, a channel in which Andrew Rea faithfully recreates dishes from movies and TV shows, ranging from the sublime (the timpano from Big Night) to the absurd (the Taco Town taco from Saturday Night Live). The editing is crisp, and the camera’s focus on the ingredients and work area has set the template for other YouTube cooking shows. Rea also goes about his recipes with a dry sense of humor — when he published his book of recipes from the show, he printed this disclaimer for the Taco Town taco: “Exercise extreme caution when deep-frying. Better yet, just don’t make this at all.”

During the pandemic, I spent long hours amusing myself by watching Bon Appétit’s channel, but the brownface scandal at the publication during the summer of 2020 wound up scattering its on-air talent to different corners of food cyberspace. You can still see the videos that Claire Saffitz made for them where she attempts to reverse-engineer Cheetos and Starburst candies using a professional kitchen. Besides her own channel called Dessert Person, she contributes to the New York Times’ YouTube cooking channel. Her colleague there is Sohla El-Waylly, who was at the center of that Bon Appétit scandal and now hosts Mystery Menu.

Former Buzzfeed managing editor Alvin Zhou has now become a part of the Babish Culinary Universe. In Anime With Alvin,

he recreates dishes from Japanese animation and video games. Whenever his knowledge of Asian food or cooking techniques is found to be lacking, he says, “I am a bad Asian,” a refrain that I have taken to using in my own life.

The most breathless entry in the YouTube food channel stakes is Tasty, which presents rapid-fire recipes for ornate dishes made with ordinary supermarket ingredients. (I learned how to put a mirror glaze on a cake that way.) The channel isn’t much for authenticity, if you put any store by that concept, but its features are fun as it compares recipes for the same dish from various celebrity cookbooks and has chefs of varying levels present their recipes for things like onion rings and donuts.

Meanwhile, Gustavo Tosta, a Brazilian native who has made his home in Florida, has established a channel called Guga Foods. While he does a fair amount of shilling for his own product lines of cookware and spice rubs, his show is worth seeing for the wacky experiments he does with food, including dry-aging steak in a thick coating of peanut butter, which worked well for the meat at the cost of permeating everything else in his fridge with the scent of peanut butter. He also successfully cooked a steak with a clothing iron and reported, “You will not be able to use the iron on your clothes after [this]. Your clothing iron will become your meat iron.” l

toast ($16). Still, the star of the show is the Hangover Burger ($18): a hand-ground brisket patty with candied bacon, IPF’NA cheddar cheese, a sunny-side up egg, pickled onions, fresh-made pickles, Hollandaise sauce, and a side of cheesy jalapeno grits or fresh fruit. There is also a mixed-berry parfait ($12) with low-fat yogurt, granola, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and local honey that is quite yummy. Along with the various Panther Island Brewing beer varieties on tap, you can also order mimosas for $2 each or $15 for a pitcher.

Serving Spring

Whether for a soiree or two, these delectable dishes and cocktails are perfect for the balmy weather and high times.

Winter has its merits, its cold, dark days conjuring the urge for comfort food and moody cocktails that warm you from the inside, but spring’s arrival is always a welcome sight — a time of rejuvenation and renewal. As the weather gets warmer, our household craves lighter meals packed with fresh produce and beverages that are bursting with bright flavors. With that in mind, I’ve compiled a few homemade food and cocktail recipes that are sure to put a spring in your step. Both dishes are great vegetarian options, but feel free to add grilled chicken or roasted salmon for added protein.

Banana Coconut Curry

If spring has you dreaming of a tropical vacation, give this savory banana and coconut curry a try. Curry may not seem to go with warmer weather, but this light dish

is satisfying without weighing you down. Curry originated in some of the warmest climates on earth, after all. The combination of ripe bananas, coconut milk, and lots of Southeast Asian spices creates a creamy and flavorful sauce that pairs perfectly with rice or even naan.

Ingredients

To serve: rice

1 cup sugar snap peas

2 tbsp oil divided

3 bananas

½ cup diced onion

1 tbsp fresh grated ginger

2 tbsp Thai red curry paste

1 14-oz can coconut milk

2 cups vegetable broth

1 tbsp soy sauce 15 mL

1 tbsp chili garlic sauce

Instructions

Prepare rice according to instructions on

the packaging. Clean sugar snap peas and set aside. Slice bananas into half-inch-thick rounds. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat and add the bananas. Cook until lightly browned, about 3 minutes on each side. Remove bananas and set aside. To the same wok, add remaining tablespoon of oil on medium heat. Add the onion, ginger, and curry paste, cooking until onion is soft, about 3 minutes. Add coconut milk, broth, soy sauce, and chile garlic paste. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for another 5 minutes. To serve, spoon rice into serving bowls, followed by curry. Top with sugar snaps and a few banana slices.

Banana Espresso Martini

Have bananas left over? Whip up a fun, fruity take on the most on-trend cocktail of the year, the espresso martini. The sweetness of banana liqueur complements the bitterness of the espresso, creating a perfect

balance. Garnish with a slice of fresh banana for added freshness.

Ingredients

2 ounces vodka

1/2 ounce coffee liqueur, such as Kahlua 1 ounce espresso, freshly brewed, or cold brew concentrate

1/2 ounce crème de banana liqueur

Banana slices for garnish

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake then strain into coupe glass. Garnish with fresh banana slice.

Mushroom and Asparagus Oven Risotto

Folks shy away from risotto because, like that bad boyfriend from your past, it’s too needy. The constant stirring and adding of broth required to achieve the ideal creamy yet al dente texture can be a literal pain in continued on page 31

the neck. Cooking risotto in the oven can achieve the same results while letting you get on with your life as it cooks.

This spring vegetable risotto is loaded with seasonal items that are likely already in your fridge this time of year, like fresh asparagus, spring onions, basil, lemon, and chives. The asparagus brings its unique flavor, the mushrooms provide a meaty texture, and the basil, chives, and lemon zest sprinkled on top ramp up the freshness even more.

Ingredients

4 tbsp salted butter

1 tbsp olive oil

1 bunch asparagus, sliced into rounds, keeping tips whole

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced

3 cloves garlic, grated

2 bunches green onions, chopped

1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme

2 tbsp chopped fresh chives

1 1/2 cups arborio rice

5 cups chicken broth

1/2 cup white wine

4 ounces goat cheese

1/4 cup thinly shaved red onion

6 to 8 fresh basil leaves

Zest of 1 lemon

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In an ovenproof skillet with a tight-fitting lid (important!), add 2 tablespoons butter, a drizzle of olive oil, and the asparagus. Cook over medium heat until bright green, about 3 minutes. Remove to a plate and season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter to the skillet and another drizzle of olive oil. Add the mushrooms and cook about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and green onions. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper and stir to combine. Stir in the thyme followed by the chives, then add the rice and stir until

it is well coated in the butter and mushrooms. Add the white wine and broth. Stir. Bring to a simmer, then cover and transfer to the oven. Bake until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender, between 35 and 40 minutes.

Carefully remove from the oven and remove the lid. Add 3 ounces of goat cheese and all but a quarter cup of the reserved asparagus, then stir until creamy. Top with the remaining ounce of goat cheese, the asparagus, red onion, torn basil leaves, and lemon zest.

Alaska Cocktail

To go along with the risotto, how about a light and vegetal three-ingredient cocktail that packs a punch? The Alaska is an

herbaceous twist on the standard martini that will pair well with the asparagus and spring onions in the dish.

Ingredients

1/2 ounce yellow Chartreuse (or any herbal liqueur)

1 1/2 ounce gin

Dash orange bitters

Instructions

Combine all ingredients with ice in a mixing glass and give it a good stir until the sides of the glass are frosty. Strain into a cocktail glass and serve. l

With just three ingredients, the Alaska is simple but potent.

LAST CALL

Sip, Stroll, and Rock & Roll with Irving on the Rocks

One of the great things about North Texas is the number of municipalities that welcome tourists and locals alike. You can staycation almost anywhere, including Irving. What I look for in a getaway is a nice hotel, great food and drinks, and a seasonal entertainment event to pull it all together, a purpose, if you will. In the fall, the Irving/ Los Colinas area checked all those boxes for me.

When the weather cooperates, which is most times of year in Texas, there are free concerts at Texas Lottery Plaza (340 W Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, 972-810-1499). It was a bit chilly during my visit, but the band shell at Toyota Music Factory (316 W Las Colinas Blvd., Irving, 469-840-9730) was quite cozy at the Queens of the Stone Age show I attended. The venue is within walking distance of food and drinks, and we stayed at a vintage-style hotel called Texican Court.

The retro-chic rooms at Texican Court (501 W Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, 833-8394226) feature colorful bespoke furniture, minibars in vintage-style refrigerators, and designer toiletries of the upgraded rooms have shared wraparound porches. At the same time, suites provide living/dining areas or separate living rooms. Other perks include fire pits in the courtyard, a circular outdoor pool, and complimentary parking. Loaner bikes are available if you›d like to ride rather than walk Irving›s new cocktail trail.

Visit Irving has a new app called Irving on the Rocks, which guides you through (and earns you points from) more than a dozen restaurants and bars near the Toyota Music Factory and its two adjacent hotels. As for us, we began our journey down the trail with drinks at the hotel’s restaurant, a Tex-Mex eatery called Two Mules Cantina (501 W Las Colinas Blvd., Irving, 469-5774599). My mock prickly-pear margarita was as delicious as it was pretty.

Then, we ventured to Reservoir at Toyota Music Factory (330 W Las Colinas Blvd, 469-351-7112) and tried the Angry Pigs in a Blanket before the show. For $11.79, you get a Louisiana sausage wrapped in house-made dough, fired in a brick oven, finished with garlic-parmesan and green onion, and then served with our fresh-made, stone-ground mustard sauce. I’m a big fan. Sometimes, the menu changes on event nights, but this item is always available. As for drinks, keep an eye on ReservoirMusicFactory.com for updates, as a drink menu overhaul is in the works.

Time was limited, but the various businesses on the trail have my attention and will be worth visiting soon. Among the other Irving on the Rocks participants in the 300-ish block of West Las Colinas Blvd, you will find Blaze Brazilian Steakhouse, The Blue Fish, Gloria’s, Kitchen 101, Mama Tried, Mercy Bar & Lounge, Mesa Mezcal, Pacheco, Pop Factory, TCBY, and Vetted Well

As I drank only a mock cocktail and a slew of sodas, my hangover was the post-concert kind, easily remedied with coffee the next morning. Mmm, coffee. While the hotel was cute and welcoming, my recovery mode involved getting clothed and hitting the Starbucks as the hotel’s wifi wasn’t compatible with the flying brick that is my laptop. (I think this falls under #ItsNotYouItsMe.) After I was sufficiently caffeinated and caught up on work, I went back to the hotel and enjoyed lunch, exactly where we started. The street tacos at Two Mules didn’t disappoint.

Ready to get started? Simply download the free Irving on the Rocks app on your smartphone or tablet. Then, use the app when you check in places up to twice daily, earn points, and check out the featured cocktails. Your first perk will be a “Rock Star Kit” you can have mailed to you or pick up at a vending machine near the TCBY. The kits include essentials like hangover remedies, mints, and wet wipes, plus a few lucky winners will win free concert ticket vouchers to upcoming Toyota Music Factory shows.

The April/May calendar at TMF includes the likes of Black Crows, Blue October, Riley Green, Social Distortion, and one I›d like to check out: SESSANTA featuring A Perfect Circle, Primus, and Puscifer. It›s a #MaynardFest. Count me in!

ZEST 2024:

MUSIC

Tasty Licks

There are still plenty of primo spots for a bite and some sounds in town.

Given the closings of Lola’s, the Post, and Twilite Lounge over the past six months, coming up with a list of Fort Worth places offering bites along with live music seemed daunting at first, but that just meant I had to look beyond my tried-and-trues. While the days of grabbing a chopped beef sandwich from Dayne’s BBQ in between bands at Lola’s are long gone, there’s still plenty of great options to grab a nosh while you fill your ears.

On weekends and during special events at the Bearded Lady (300 S Main St, Fort Worth, 817-349-9832), performers set up beneath a covered stage in the corner of the Southside craft beer-and-burger emporium’s expansive, dog-friendly patio. You’ll hear a nice mix of covers and originals, as well as a wide range of genres from “singer who plays an acoustic guitar” to jazz, hip-hop, and “person who makes lo-fi beats.” Of course,

Turns out the World’s Largest Honky Tonk can also boast about some pretty great grub! While you’re at Billy Bob’s Texas (2520 Rodeo Plaza, Fort Worth, 817-624-7117) waiting on sets from big acts like Whitey Morgan, Band of Heathens, and Dylan Wheeler, grab a bite from the Honky Tonk Kitchen — I recommend the salt-crusted baked potato, the Funky Town Hawt Chicken sandwich, and the Cowboy Crunch burger, as well as the Travis Tritt concert on April 6.

When Lola’s moved to the Southside, it was replaced by Birdie’s Social Club (2736 W 6th St, Fort Worth, 817-888-8914), flipping the script from its predecessor’s rowdy melange of rotating food trucks and beer-fueled, cowpunk iconography into a college crowd-pleasing, day-drinking dreamland of pastel hues and craft cocktails. The change might have been jarring for some, but for those who gave it a chance, they were rewarded with a solid menu full of stuff like Drunken Queso (made with Shinerbraised barbacoa), wings, and quesadillas. Cover bands rock the outdoor stage, but indoors, in Birdie’s Bourbon & Shine bar, singer-songwriters and live bands play their original tunes to enthusiastic young crowds.

the beer and bites are the main reasons why you go to the Lady, and, on both counts, there’s plenty to love. A quick convo with your server about new brews and the grilled cheese of the month will point you in the right direction.

Eddie V’s (3100 W 7th St, Fort Worth, 817-336-8000) is a longtime favorite because of its upscale surf and turf and its très chic happy-hour scene, where you’ll find good conversation, Oysters Eddiefeller, steak continued on page 42

tataki, yellowtail sashimi, and a bevy of topshelf craft cocktails, set to a score of mostly straight-ahead and pop jazz performed by a cavalcade of seriously skilled players.

The beer selection at Fort Brewery & Pizza (2737 Tillar St, Fort Worth, 817-923-8000) gives you a lot of great choices — if you like IPAs, you need to add Lady of the Haze to your list post-haste — and the food menu is as inventive as it is tasty. There is typical beer-pairing fare like wings, soft pretzels, and pizzas (the Pan de Campo is my favorite), but there’s also stuff like the whipped feta dip, Eggs Benedict on homemade focaccia, and live music by local performers and touring acts alike — Sir Mixalot played here once, and Ian Moore is coming in June.

Lots of people fretted about the move to the traffic circle, but by now Magnolia Motor Lounge (3803 Southwest Blvd, Fort Worth, 817-332-3344) has gotten comfortable in its new home in what used to be the Royal Falcon pub. Live music — primarily of the country, rock, and singer-songwriter varieties — still goes as good as ever with cold beer, cheap shots, and food-truck fare. Currently, that post is held by El Buey de la Barranca, specializing in Mexico City-style street food. Mags might have relocated, but it’s just as fun as you remember.

ago, the food-truck operation of Aaliyah Zo, who serves up big burgers, tasty wings, and other booze-padding delights.

Shaw’s Patio Grill (1051 W Magnolia Av, Fort Worth, 817-926-2116) has been around since before Magnolia was cool, and it has stood the test of time on its selection of flavorful comforts like their big ol’ burgers, a badass brunch BLT that comes with a fried egg in it, and their signature housemade potato chips. And for the past decade or so, its patio has been home to a variety of open mics, karaoke nights, and even the occasional original rock band ready to get loud and rowdy.

There was a recent ownership change at McFly’s Pub (6104 LT JG Barnett Rd, Fort Worth, 817-744-8272), but you can still expect a very casual neighborhood-spot vibe (cheap drinks, local bonhomie), an eclectic mix of live music (singer-songwriters, cover bands, local rockers), and, as of a week or so

The menu at Tannahill’s Tavern & Music Hall (122 E Exchange Av, Fort Worth, 817900-9300) features flavors as big as the acts rocking its stage — when you consider that the Stockyards venue’s upcoming calendar includes shows from the likes of Chris Isaak, Taking Back Sunday, and Paul Cauthen, you ought to eat there even if you aren’t going to watch Waxahatchee play. Tannahill’s is a Tim Love joint, after all, so you’ll find fare ranging from oysters (grilled and raw) and chicken and cauliflower nuggets to a tasty fried bologna sandwich and an amazing cowboy ribeye.

Full disclosure: WineHaus (1628 Park Place, Fort Worth, 817-887-9101) is a gorgeous place to sip vino, enjoy conversation, and mellow out to live jazz jams on the patio, but if you’re hungry, your best bet is to order

a pizza from the nearby iFratelli’s location and bring it over to your table. If you ask me, a few slices of tasty ’za, a bottle of red, and a nice mood soundtracked by some tastefully played straight-ahead and smooth jazz outdoors is one of the best date nights you can have in Fort Worth. l

In preparation for this installment of Crosstown Sounds, I asked my everwidening circle of local music contacts to tell me where they were playing now thru April and to send pictures of delicious food finds from gig locations that serve grub. Be careful what you wish for. (Looking at you, Dick Beldings.)

Tolbert’s is chili (duh), I have a personal recommendation for Rock & Brews. For just $8 on the dessert menu, try the Purple Rain Drops, hand-rolled French beignet-style pastries filled with chocolate chips, deep fried to perfection, sprinkled with powdered sugar, topped with raspberry sauce, and served with housemade whipped cream.

After a quick trip to the Motherland — for frontman Tommy Katona, that means Hungary — these nominees in our 2023 Music Awards for best regional act are playing, well, all over the region in late April, including at Rock & Brews (5351 Nebraska Furniture Mart Dr, The Colony, 972-584-1670) 8pm Thu, Apr 19; Tolbert’s Restaurant & Chili Parlour (423 S Main St, Grapevine, 817-421-4888) 8:30pm Thu, Apr 25; and at the Gar Hole (106 Houston St, Anna, 469-301-6284) 8pm Fri, Apr 26

Back to Those Dick Beldings

They’ve got nothing in April. Nada. No. Nope. Why? Because their drummer, Michael Harper, the brewmaster at Windmills Brewery (5755 Grandscape Blvd, The Colony, 972-777-6770), is going on a special trip to Italy to learn more about beer and stuff. In his absence, please hit them up if you are interested in booking the band as an acoustic folk act rather than a rad ’90s tribute. Otherwise, they will spend the next two months doing crazy photoshoots, posting memes, and dreaming of summer.

Their final gig until June is at Magnolia Motor Lounge (3803 Southwest Blvd, Fort Worth, 817-332-3344) 9pm Sat. Admission is $12. In the parking lot, the food truck El Buey de la Barranca Mexican Food (Bit. ly/ElBuey, 682-373-1420) will serve tacos, tortas, chilaquiles, flautas, and pambazos.
