Powers Hamburgers, a beloved institution in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is more than just a restaurant—it’s a piece of local history. With roots tracing back to 1940, Powers has become a staple of the Fort Wayne culinary landscape. Originally an expansion of the Powers brothers' burger dynasty, which began in Michigan in 1935, Powers Hamburgers on Harrison Street has earned its reputation for its unique and nostalgic dining experience. The restaurant's small burgers, a departure from the larger burgers popular at the time, have remained a favorite, drawing generations of loyal customers who appreciate its timeless appeal.
Over the decades, Powers Hamburgers has stuck to its roots. The restaurant’s signature chili and coney sauce recipes, handwritten by Leo Powers himself, have stayed intact, ensuring the menu remains as authentic as ever. The simple yet delicious offerings, including their iconic sliders, have earned Powers a dedicated community of supporters. For many, a visit to Powers is a tradition—whether it’s grabbing a quick meal or enjoying the classic diner atmosphere. Its status as a Fort Wayne landmark was solidified by its consistency and deep connection to the town’s heritage.
In late 2023, after over two decades of ownership, Michael and Gloria Hall announced they were looking to retire and sell Powers Hamburgers. However, they weren’t eager to pass the business on to just anyone. They were determined to find a buyer who would respect the restaurant’s rich legacy. Powers Hamburgers on Harrison Street is the last remaining link to the once-popular regional chain, and the Halls were committed to ensuring that whoever took over would continue to honor the legacy of the Powers brothers.
In early 2024, the Halls found the perfect buyers in Salvatori’s Hospitality Group and Alex Richardson. Both parties had separately shown interest, but they ultimately teamed up to present a joint offer. With years of experience in the restaurant industry, Richardson and Salvatori’s Hospitality Group knew the importance of maintaining the restaurant’s essence. "We’ve tried to keep everything as much the same as possible," Richardson explained, emphasizing their commitment to preserving Powers’ original recipes and its distinctive diner atmosphere.
The new owners made subtle updates, restoring classic features like the stools at the counter and adding a fresh coat of paint. However, their most significant challenge came in June 2024 when a fire temporarily halted operations. Thankfully, the fire was contained, but it caused some smoke damage. Undeterred, Richardson and his team rallied, offering the iconic sliders through a food truck and even opening a temporary location at the Union Street Market. This resourceful response helped Powers Hamburgers maintain its connection to the community during a challenging time.
As renovations began on the main restaurant, the new owners listened closely to customer feedback. They added a fryer, which allowed them to introduce fries to the menu—a long-requested addition that pleased loyal patrons. They also implemented a walk-up window for easier takeout, alleviating crowding inside the small space. Updates like these, along with modernizing equipment and lighting, allowed the restaurant to maintain its historic charm while offering a more comfortable dining experience
Perhaps the most significant visual update was the restoration of Powers' iconic neon sign. A beacon for generations of Fort Wayne residents, the sign had been out of commission for years, but Richardson and his team made sure it was remade, reigniting that nostalgic glow for both old and new customers. In every way, the new ownership has worked to preserve what made Powers Hamburgers special, while ensuring it stays relevant for future generations.
Today, Powers Hamburgers remains a quintessential part of Fort Wayne’s identity. It’s more than just a place to grab a bite— it’s a gathering spot for the community, where everyone, from the mayor to the person hopping off the bus, can enjoy a meal in the heart of the city. With its legacy intact and a promising future ahead, Powers Hamburgers is a true Fort Wayne institution, as iconic as Coney Island or Parkview Field, and a place that locals continue to take pride in.

Valentine's Day Sugar Cookies
Instructions:
Ingredients:
3 cups all purpose flour
1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
In a bowl, combine dry ingredients and set aside. With a stand mixer with a paddle attachment (or a hand mixer), combine butter and sugar until fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla and mix until well combined and smooth. Add flour mixture a little bit at a time with the mixer on low until mixed and the flour is incorporated. Continue mixing until the dough holds together, about 5 minutes. (If the dough seems floury or powdery, it need to continue to mix together).
Divide the dough in half and flatten each half into a disk. Wrap with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 375°F. While the oven is preheating, remove the dough from the fridge.
Sprinkle the worksurface with a bit of powdered sugar or flour so the dough doesn't stick. Roll dough to ¼" thickness and cut into desired shapes.
Place cookies 1-inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes or until cookies begin to brown on the edges. Cool completely before decorating with icing.

One .33-ounce package strawberry popping candy, such as Pop Rocks
1 lemon wedge
Cocktail:
2 ounces Passion Tea-Infused Gin, recipe follows
1 ounce Simple Syrup, recipe follows
1 ounce lemon juice
Very dry champagne, for topping
Passion Tea-Infused Gin:
3 passionfruit tea bags
About 2 cups gin
Simple Syrup:
1 cup sugar
Instructions:
For the rim:
Put the popping candy in a shallow dish. Rub the lemon wedge around the rim of a coupe glass, then roll the rim in the popping candy. For the cocktail: Put the Passion Tea-Infused Gin, Simple Syrup and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into the rimmed glass. Top off with champagne.
Passion Tea-Infused Gin: Yield: 2 cups
Put the tea bags in a 16-ounce mason jar, then fill with the gin. Leave at room temperature, giving it a little swirl every half hour, for 3 to 4 hours. Remove the bags.
Simple Syrup: Yield: 1 1/2 cups
Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and let cool completely. Keep covered in the refrigerator up to 1 month.

When I arrived, I noticed a humble building that looked like it might have once been a gas station. It had minimal parking, but there was an unmistakable buzz inside I walked in and immediately saw a few women hustling around, preparing pizzas, making pulled pork sandwiches, and dishing out amazing soups. Among them were Dawn, Susan, and a couple of other friendly faces, all working with energy and purpose. It was clear that this was more than just a restaurant it was a place built on passion and community

But don’t let that deter you what you will find is home-cooked meals prepared with love and care. I had the chance to sample several items from their menu, and each one was better than the last The spinach dip was rich and creamy, the hot Italian sandwich packed with flavor, and the fresh salads were a perfect balance of textures and taste. But the calzones? Absolutely unforgettable. All their food is made fresh, and everything is cooked in their deck oven, which gives it a special touch. Jake Patten never thought he’d find his life in a paintbrush
After serving in the United States Marines from 1996 to 2002 He came out of the military with a sense of purpose one that, surprisingly, didn’t have anything to do with combat. Instead, it led him into the world of art. He started painting in 2005, and at first, it was just for the love of it “I’d do it for free,” he’d say with a grin, though the world quickly began to notice his talent.
He’d call his style figurative expressionism, a mix of abstract shapes and human forms that evoked deep emotion. His favorite piece? "Birthday Cake," a colorful, chaotic celebration of life, which he proudly displayed in his studio Jake had an instinct for art that could only come from years of selfdiscovery, finding beauty in the messy ebbs and flows of his creative process.
But Jake wasn’t just a lone artist in his studio. He shared a life with Rebecca Johnson, his partner for over two decades Rebecca and Jake’s love story began long before they ever picked up their brushes They lived just an alley away from each other, and they first met at an art show both there to see a world of possibilities that their creativity could unlock. Rebecca had always been an artist, growing up in a family of talented creatives. Her father and brother were both renowned in their own right, and for a long time, she struggled with feelings of doubt Art was something she loved but questioned being able to leave an indelible impresion especially in a family where greatness was almost expected But the pandemic changed that During the long, quiet days of lockdown, Rebecca found herself in a space where time stood still and suddenly, all those doubts she’d carried around seemed less important. With nothing but time on her hands and a sense of boldness sparked by the isolation, Rebecca picked up a paintbrush again This time, she didn’t hesitate Her art was a world apart from Jake’s her style was rooted in abstract expressionism, with splashes of mid-century modern influences that made her work feel both timeless and contemporary. Rebecca became a master of creating movement and emotion through color, light, and texture It wasn’t long before her work began to turn heads, and she and Jake became an unstoppable duo in the local art scene.
When asked how they made their relationship work, Jake would jokingly call Rebecca “too neat,” while Rebecca would tease Jake for being “sloppy ” They were opposites in many ways, but their shared passion for art created a bond that kept them together through thick and thin.
