f anyone spends any significant time around the Military, it becomes clear relatively early in one’s career that changing names and logos happens with amazing regularity. That is something almost unheard of in the outside world where name and logo recognition mean everything. None the less, since I began my career in Child & Youth Services (CYS) in 1993, I have seen the CYS Logo change five times and the name change from Child & Youth Services to Child, Youth & School Services and back again! The most recent logo and name change became official in January 2017. One can clearly see the evolution of the iconography specifically the continuity of using the five pointed star. The newest CYS logo still bases the design on the five pointed star, but gone are the oddly stretched, asymmetrical stars and reliance on red, white and blue. Instead, strong black and gold lines form the main star bisected diagonally by two red and blue “shooting stars”. All of the stars are symmetrical and the overall impact of the design is much cleaner, presenting a more finished and professional look than previous logo designs. Even the font has been tightened up and spelling out United States Army also adds to a more complete statement. In short, the CYS logo has grown up, from its earliest days looking somewhat child-like to its present more corporate-like image. Part of that growth can be attributed to the development of graphics technology, while the larger part is simply a matter of perceptions and intent changing, developing and becoming clearer.
