After a couple of “intense months” of hard work, Dr. Artaj Singh said it “feels great” to finally celebrate the grand opening of Primary Care Niagara.

Members of the Fort Erie Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Erie Economic Development and Tourism Corporation and Town staff gathered early Monday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony

for the new urgent care clinic and family practice.

Singh said Primary Care Niagara, which boasts nine exam rooms, office space for physicians and plenty of room for visiting specialists, will provide much-needed service to Fort Erie.

Based on Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care guidelines, Singh said Fort Erie should have about 16 to 18 fulltime family physicians,

and according to surveys, the municipality only has six full-time and six part-time physicians to serve the community, which has more than 30,000 residents.

The doctor purchased the Garrison Square Plaza in 2004 with a vision to create a medical campus offering a variety of health services on site including a medical laboratory, a full-service pharmacy, a psychology and counselling centre, a hearing and audiology

clinic and foot clinic.

He said the facility will also provide a weekly women’s health-care clinic, and beginning in May, physiotherapy services. Another specialist has also signed on to provide part-time cardiac care and diabetic care.

He described Primary Care Niagara as a “hybrid clinic” where walkins are welcome, but patients can also register online in the comfort of their own homes.

“Our Fast Web Checkin allows people to register online and they don’t have to wait in the waiting room. It also lets people know what the wait time is,” Singh said.

He said the facility will provide a weekly women’s health-care clinic, and beginning in May, physiotherapy services.

Another specialist has also signed on to provide part-time cardiac care and diabetic care.

While Singh wasn’t

sure of the exact number of patients Primary Care Niagara will serve, he said he expects the clinic to be “very busy” in the days ahead.

The clinic, located at 660 Garrison Rd., is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Councillors invited to Bowl for Kids’ Sake Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer

The executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Niagara has issued a challenge to Fort Erie councillors to bring the Bowl for Kids’ Sake Mayor’s Trophy back to Fort Erie.

The trophy is awarded to the mayor whose community raises the most money, and the trophy currently sits in Pelham.

Monday night, encouraging members of the council to either make a pledge or to participate in the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake campaign, which runs from March 3 to March 23, with Carroll’s Bowling Lanes set to host games at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on March 23.

Van Der Heyden said Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Niagara has been providing individual and group mentoring

services to children in Niagara since April 1964.

Last year, the program served 607 children, of which 109 were from Fort Erie, with 28 children still waiting for their “forever Big.” “I’m very excited to announce, thanks to a grant we’ve received recently, we are starting a new program through partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters Niagara Falls with Strive Niagara to offer a young

mom’s program,” Van Der Heyden said.

The program will match young mothers with professional women to assist with challenges these mothers face, such as continuing with school or providing emotional support.

The organization relies on donors, sponsorships, grants and fundraising efforts to continue to provide service to the community.

Van Der Heyden said

Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser and this year’s goal is to raise $307,500.

Jessica Trapani, the fundraising and events co-ordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Niagara said this year’s theme is ‘Fandemonium’ with prizes available for the bestdressed teams and incentives for team pledge levels achieved.

“We encourage you to

come dressed in an outfit of whatever you’re a fan of.”

Trapani said in the past, Fort Erie’s council has made a significant contribution to the Big Brothers Big Sisters campaign and can continue to do so by registering a team of four to six bowlers, gathering a minimum of $200 or $50 per player.

Council wants Region to have more say on NPCA budget Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer

Fort Erie’s councillors agree the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), which is responsible for overseeing the region’s watershed areas, should be more transparent when it comes to its budget.

At a meeting at Town Hall last Monday night, the council supported a resolution brought forward by Ward 2 Coun. Nick Dubanow calling on the NPCA to shed some light on all its spending in 2018 and 2019, and to continue to provide updates about its budget every year after that.

The resolution also calls on the province to make changes to the Conservation Authorities Act to give all municipalities within the watershed of a conservation authority greater oversight into budgets, which would give Niagara’s regional government the power to approve

the NPCA’s budget.

The NPCA receives funding from the Region, as well as the City of Hamilton and Haldimand.

While the budget is presented to the Region, it doesn’t have power under provincial legislation to approve or deny funding requests from the NPCA. The resolution also noted that when the NPCA’s budgets for 2018, and 2019 were presented, regional councillors didn’t receive a full accounting of all the agency’s spending.

In 2017, mounting concerns and criticism of the NPCA led the Province to ask the auditor general to conduct an audit of the agency.

The investigation revealed several areas of concern at the NPCA including $3.8 million in purchases between 2013 and 2017 that didn’t adhere to the agency’s own policies for the competitive acquisition of goods

and services.

Dubanow told fellow councillors that there are a lot of questions regarding the NPCA’s finances.

“I think it goes without saying that the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, I’m pleased with the direction things are moving now, but over the previous four years, there’s been a lot of concern within the community about how things have been conducted,” he said.

He described the NPCA as having “this cloud over their head,” and added that Niagara’s taxpayers who fund the agency have the right to transparency in terms of how the budget money is spent.

“We (as elected officials) all act on behalf of the taxpayers. We’re the stewards of the taxes they pay for us. It’s very important we have the ability to request that information and approve the budget that is paid for with tax dollars,”

he said.

“If they come back and say, ‘No you don’t have that authority. Here’s the bill — pay it,’ then we can say...(that) we’re holding off until we get those answers,” he said.

Ward 6 Coun. AnnMarie Noyes asked how much oversight the Niagara Region has over the NPCA. Mayor Wayne Redekop said the Region has “none.”

Ward 5 Coun. Don Lubberts said he had “no problem” supporting the motion but cautioned that there’s a possibility the provincial government could view the Town’s request as an attempt to act on behalf of the Region in its call for budget oversight.

“I just don’t know that we are here to request things on behalf of the Region and that looks like this is what we’re doing here,” he said.

Dubanow said his motion wasn’t asking the Province to give Fort Erie the power to reject the NPCA budget. His motion is to give the Region that power.

Dubanow said he wanted his motion sent to the Region, the city of Hamilton and Haldimand County for their support.

“We’re asking on behalf of the Town of Fort Erie that they grant the Regional Municipality of Niagara that right because when it comes down to it, the taxpayers within the Town of Fort Erie that we represent are also taxpayers to the Regional Municipality of Niagara,” he said.

“We’ve got to do something about this on behalf of our taxpayers.”

Fort Erie resident celebrates 105th birthday Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer

Doris Saxton reached an amazing milestone in celebrating her 105th birthday last week.

However, for the senior, her birthday milestone “feels no different than any other day.”

“It’s just a number to me,” she explained.

Her family came together to celebrate the momentous occasion in Saxton’s Fort Erie home last Wednesday afternoon with a small cake.

Saxton was born on Feb. 26, 1914 in Dorset, a county in southwest England, to parents Florence and James Kellaway and later came to Canada to live as an infant.

She has lived a huge chunk of her life in Fort Erie and once worked at Green Acres, her niece, Mary Lou Kellaway, said.

Saxton has quite the green thumb and has always enjoyed gardening over the years.

“She used to have these huge gardens that would surround the back of her house. She loved to bake and cook,” Kellaway said.

When she was younger, Saxton used to love to sew and do arts and crafts. She had an entire room dedicated just for her crafts.

She was born on Feb. 26, 1914. Beside her is Saxton’s niece, Mary Lou Kellaway, great-great niece Hayley Fitzpatrick, great-great-great nephew Lincoln Fitzpatrick-Bath, and great-niece, Katie Hardison.

These days, though, Saxton really enjoys sitting and gazing at the birds outside her window.

“She loves watching the birds who come to feed at her bird feeder just right out her window,” Kellaway says.

When asked what the key to long life is, Kellaway joked it was likely due to genetics.

“I’m already planning for Doris’ 110th birthday,” she said.

“We definitely have good genes. Doris’ mother lived until almost 100. All my grandmother’s sisters lived into their hundreds.”

Joking aside, Kellaway said Saxton has always remained active and exercises when she can, and everything she eats is not processed.

“Doris always ate whatever she could straight from her garden and whatever she made, she baked from scratch,” Kellaway said.

“She’s so healthy she’s managed to outlive two husbands; one of whom was 14 years younger than her.”

Saxton was still shovelling the snow from her driveway up until about five years ago when her family took the chore over from her.

According to Kellaway, her aunt’s best quality us her caring nature.

“She’s always just there. If you ever needed somebody, it was Doris.”

When asked what their family’s favourite memories are of Saxton, great-niece Katie Hardison said some of the best memories she has of her great-aunt are celebrating Saxton’s birthday.

Council to consider grant for community centre Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer Town Council will consider a $25,000 grant for the Crystal Ridge Community Centre in its budget deliberations.

Edward Feiertag, secretary for the Crystal Ridge Community Centre (CRCC), spoke at Town Hall last Monday night and asked Fort Erie’s councillors to consider the request.

Feiertag explained the facility is well used by community groups, including the Ridgeway Lioness, Therapy and Alternatives for Special Children and Adults with Disabilities (TASC), Down the Rabbit Hole Theatre Company, sports leagues and is often used for fund-raisers, service club meetings, trivia nights, community dinners, flu shot clinics and so much more.

He gave a brief history of the facility, which is now in its 22nd year of service.

“In 1993, the Ridgeway Lions had outgrown their hall on Prospect Point Road North and decided

to pursue the construction of a new hall attached to the west end arena, now known as the Crystal Ridge Arena, which was also largely funded by the Ridgeway Lions,” Feiertag told councillors.

The Crystal Ridge Community Centre Corporation was formed and issued its first Registered Charity Information Return on March 19, 1997.

Feiertag said the CRCC is a not-for-profit charitable organization operated by community groups. The majority of the board is represented by the Ridgeway Lions and the remaining members consist of others from community

groups who pay an annual membership.

According to Feiertag, the community centre operates as “close to breakeven as possible.” “(Non-members) pay a rental charge that is set and reviewed annually by the board. The goal is to maximize the hall usage and to charge reasonable fees to cover operating costs,” he said.

In the past where there have been operating deficiencies, Feiertag said the Ridgeway Lions have covered those deficiencies by providing loans.

The reason for the request, Feiertag explained to councillors, is due to

substantial rising costs, including office supplies, water, electricity, maintenance, insurance and advertising.

Hats give confidence when people need it most Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer

When Marsha Hawrylenko arrived at the Walker Family Centre in St. Catharines on Monday, she never imagined she’d be running into some of her friends.

“I had no idea Hats of Hope was done by people in Fort Erie,” she says with a smile.

While on her way to an appointment, she bumped into Hats of Hope volunteers, who were there to receive a plaque in recognition for supporting cancer patients across the region for almost two decades.

The Fort Erie resident was recently diagnosed with cancer and it was about a month and a half ago when she received her very own hat from the Hat Room inside the facility.

Hawrylenko picked out a beige hat with fur around the top and when she put it on for the first time, it made her feel good.

It’s a feeling that’s hard to come by when fighting a battle as big as cancer is.

“When I got the hat, it

felt so nice not to have to throw a hood up over my head. It was a real confidence boost,” she says.

She says she was thrilled to know the Hats of Hope is an initiative that began in Fort Erie.

The Hats of Hope program had it beginnings about 18 years ago, when Fort Erie’s Wendy Gibson was working at a retail store in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

A woman walked into the store looking for a hat because she had lost her hair as a result of radiation treatments.

“I thought nobody should have to go through that,” Gibson says.

Ever since that moment, Gibson made it her mission to raise money to purchase designer hats, to be donated to the hospital so “woman can get their hats long before their hair falls out.”

She gathered a group of her friends - the group is now known as The Queen of Clubs - and together these women raise the funds through golf tournaments, euchre nights and other charitable events, to purchase the

For the first time this year, Gibson also purchased children’s hats, which will be given away during a blitz at Christmas to children and teens at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

While most of the hats stay here in Niagara, Gibson says the Queen of Clubs has sent hats to other parts of the world, such as Australia, Dubai and England for example.

“Wherever I hear there is a need, and someone asks, we’ve sent a hat.

Usually, there is a family connection,” she says.

Gibson hopes that one day Hat of Hope may become a worldwide program.

“We know that we can’t cure people with giving these hats away, but we know we’re helping them get through it.”

Since the program was established, the Hats of Hope program has raised funds, purchased and distributed more than 15,000 designer hats to cancer patients throughout the Niagara region at no cost to the patients.

Between May 2016

and May 2018, about 858 designer hats, 153 knitted hats, 524 turbans and caps, 175 wigs,and 49 scarves, as well as other items were donated to 1,288 cancer patients.

Bonnie Van Veen, the clinic manager of the cancer centre, says every patient that walks through the doors is educated about the Hat Room and are encouraged to pick one out.

“It’s one of the things people learn about when they come for their orientation,” Van Veen explains.

“Patients are invited to an education class and we talk to them about things they’ll need to know. We’ll talk about things like parking, answer questions, meet with their appointment team, and of course the Hat Room.”

falls out because of treatment, they can wear a beautiful hat and it lets people know someone else is thinking about them. That they aren’t alone, Van Veen says.

“It’s a real confidence boost.”

The Queen of Clubs are planning a Euchre Night on March 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Erie Golf Club. The cost is $20 per person and the fee will include light refreshments. The proceeds will support a woman battling cancer.

The club is also planning two golf tournaments this summer, with proceeds going toward the Hat of Hope program. The tournaments will be held on June 8 and Aug. 16 and sponsors are needed.

Celebrating women internationally March 8 For well over a century, March 8 has been known as International Women’s Day with the first gathering in 1911.

The day is not country, group or organization specific - and belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.

Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”

So, what is International Women’s Day? International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others. International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity.

International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action - whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women’s Day has been occurring for well over a century - and continue’s to grow from strength to strength. Learn about the values that guide IWD’s ethos.

Internationally, purple is a colour for symbolising women. Historically the combination of purple, green and white to symbolise women’s equality originated from the Women’s Social and Political Union in the UK in 1908. Purple signifies justice and dignity.

Green symbolises hope.

White represents purity, but is no longer used due to ‘purity’ being a controversial concept.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900’s - a time of great expansion

and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

Following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in 1911, International Women’s Day was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.

However less than a week later on 25 March, the tragic ‘Triangle Fire’ in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labour legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women’s Day events. 1911 also saw women’s Bread and Roses’ campaign.

The global internationalwomensday.com digital hub for everything IWD was launched to re-energize the day as an important platform to celebrate the successful achievements of women and to continue calls for accelerating gender parity. Each year the IWD website sees vast traffic and is used by millions of people and organizations all over the world to learn about and share IWD activity. The IWD website is made possible each year through support from corporations committed to driving gender parity. The website’s charity of choice for many years has been the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) whereby IWD fundraising is channelled. A more recent addi-

tional charity partnership is with global working women’s organization Catalyst Inc. The IWD website adopts an annual campaign theme that is globally relevant for groups and organizations.

This campaign theme, one of many around the world, provides a framework and direction for annual IWD activity and takes into account the wider agenda of both celebration as well as a broad call to action for gender parity. Recent campaign themes have included: #BalanceforBetter, #PressforProgress, #BeBoldforChange, #PledgeforParity, #MakeItHappen, #TheGenderAgenda and more. Campaign themes for the global IWD website are collaboratively developed each year with stakeholders and widely adopted worldwide.

2011 saw the 100 year centenary of International Women’s Day - with the first IWD event held exactly 100 years ago in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In the United States, President Barack Obama proclaimed March 2011 to be “Women’s History Month”, calling Americans to mark IWD by reflecting on “the extraordinary accomplishments of women” in shaping the country’s history.

The then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton launched the “100 Women Initiative: Empowering Women and Girls through International Exchanges”. In the United

Kingdom, celebrity activist Annie Lennox lead a superb march across one of London’s iconic bridges raising awareness in support for global charity Women for Women International.

Further charities such as Oxfam have run extensive activity supporting IWD and many celebrities and business leaders also actively support the day The world has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation.

Many from a younger generation may feel that ‘all the battles have been won for women’ while many feminists from the 1970’s know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of

life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men. However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so each year the world inspires women and celebrates their achievements. IWD is an official holiday in many countries

I think most of the kids that are bullies don’t have a lot of self-esteem. They’re afraid to be themselves, so when they make fun of someone for something, it makes them feel better about themselves.

Choose to be kind, don’t tolerate bullying There’s an old saying that says “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.”

You’ve no doubt heard it, and you’ve probably said it in the school yard growing up.

But the truth is, calling someone a name, or making fun of a person for being different is painful for a victim.

No one should be made to feel bad because they have differing values, are interested in quirky hobbies, or don’t wear traditional clothing, or have piercings or tattoos, or whatever the reason is they might be bullied for.

Think of a crumpled up piece of paper. No matter how hard a person tries to smooth it out again, those creases, however faint, will always remain.

It’s a great example to explain the negative impact bullying has on children.

Words do hurt, and even though an apology might be given, the words can still

sting later on.

Bullying doesn’t always get left behind in the school yard, either.

Sometimes you might see at sporting events, competitions, in high schools, and yes, even the workplace.

Feb. 27 was recognized as Pink Shirt Day across Canada, which meant thousands of students and teachers, including here in Niagara, donned pink clothing.

You might be asking what exactly is Pink Shirt Day. It’s a day set aside each year to raise awareness about bullying.

It started in Nova Scotia in 2007 when a Grade 9 student was bullied for wearing pink.

The next day, two older high school students handed out pink shirts to male students and encouraged their classmates to wear them in a show of solidarity for the young teen that had been bullied.

While there is a lot of great work being done to promote inclusiveness and raise

awareness about bullying’s negative impact on youth, it’s sadly still a problem.

It’s important to note the difference between bullying, and a disagreement between two people, or a situation where one person just isn’t being very nice.

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behaviour that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time Bullying can take on many forms, including shoving or hitting, name calling, social exclusion, threats or intimidation, and even cyber bullying.

No matter what form it takes, the Canadian Mental Health Association says the negative impact of being bullied can be devastating on the victim’s mental health and can increase their risk of suicide or mental health issues.

Parents have a great opportunity to teach their children about inclusion and respect when their children are just little ones. Our parents are our first teachers and they truly shape a young person’s formative years.

Children are not bullies. They aren’t born bullies and they should be taught right from the start that bullying shouldn’t be tolerated.

It’s a hurtful label that is used to describe a negative behaviour and it’s dangerous because children may assume that label, which makes it even more difficult to change their behaviour later on.

Instead, we should change our language; a child may bully someone. It’s an action, and we need to encourage them to stop using bullying behaviour.

Let’s choose to be kind, and set the best example we can for the next generation.

Strategic plan is an important road map for the future Wayne Redekop

The Town of Fort Erie The Town Council is presently engaged in developing a Strategic Plan that will guide its decision and budget allocations for the next four years.

It will be, essentially, the road map that will address the needs and plot the future of our community.

The exercise is being facilitated by Chris McQueen of Disruptive Ideology. To date, he has conducted an Environmental Scan (reviewed documentation related to the community profile, economic factors, market analysis, strengths, challenges and opportunities for success), en-

gaged in preliminary interviews with senior Town managers, key community stakeholders and Council, and developed a survey for completion by three distinct groups: residents of Fort Erie, community partners (such as service clubs, non-profit organizations and various agencies) and businesses.

Members of Council are reliant on hearing form the public to ensure that the work that we do is reflective of the needs and aspirations of those we represent.

Therefore, it is important for everyone to take the time (only

five to 10 minutes) to complete a survey, either on line on the Town’s web site www.forterie. ca or by hard copy at the Town Hall or one of our local library branches.

Based on comments by residents and businesses during the recent election, I would expect that affordable housing, economic development, integrating growth with nature, expanding internet access, access to primary health services, waterfront improvements, better transit and development of a community hub will be among the items under consideration.

There will undoubtedly be more, but an effective Strategic Plan should focus on no more than six to seven main objectives, which will be chosen in the context of an express Vision and Mission Statement that Council will formulate as part of the process.

On Wednesday, get ready to visit the beach Mad Science style! On Thursday, we’re hosting a Home Alone Course from St. John’s Ambulance at Crystal Ridge. Safety, first aid, and comfort skills are covered in this course

At Centennial on Thursday, Reading is FUN-damental! Join drag stars Fay Slift + Fluffy Soufflé for a special story time with books, songs and lots of laughs to show that! This is a supportive and inclusive environment focused on fun! Everyone is welcome! Tickets required, $2.

On Friday at 11 am in Stevensville, Dreamland presents a Disney Princess Concert! Come out and meet your favourite Disney Princesses, and watch them sing your favourite songs. Tickets required, $2.

Gardener’s Journal: If we had no winter That is the season for me to get into those thick clumps of overgrown shrubs and trees and shape and trim them. For their good health of course, not only for my need to be out where the air is freshest!

Such a reward comes from pruning. And it is a delayed reward I admit for it is not until the budding and flowering season that those cold moments bring out the best in bloom and fruit. I’m willing to wait and be satisfied with the harvest, knowing I did the good deeds when that harsh February blast of wind was blowing my hair and myself around. Oh yes, there are days when it feels like inside would be better... but as winter moves on, I know my choice of days to prune is becoming narrow.

So there is a little urgency in the work. The best in show are the dogwoods who thrive on being pruned each year. Each spring and summer and on into the winter these stalwart shrubs show off their beauty.

They even share their red and golden green branches for winter urns. Of yes, in the outdoor space, no matter the weather, these hardy shrubs provide colour and life even in the whitest of winter days. So let that wind blow.

I’m off to give these lovely shrubs their due and much deserved manicure and pedicures!

But before I head out, the rest of that quote: “if we had no winter, then the spring would not be so pleasant” (Anne Bradstreet).

We might argue occasionally with Ms. Bradstreet and yet we all know that Spring will be pleasant this year after our winter storms have worn themselves out.

Keep safe and warm my friends and if you can... keep growing green!

Gardening Fort Erie Horticultural Society This quote came in my notices today. Of course there is another line and I will relate this later. But it did give me pause for a moment...if we had no winter, then what?

I suppose as Canadians we are used to seeing pictures captioned ’only in Canada’ and hearing on weather networks about ‘the storms coming from Canada’.

Now, I know better and so do you.

Not all storms come from Canada. Oh no, my cousin and husband living in St. Paul Minnesota seem never to blame us for the winter they are having.

Nor do friends in Chicago, Illinois. These folk are better informed on their geography and also on winter weather. And I have a circle of Wyoming and Montana friends who chuckle at comments on weather. They prefer to think of storms as ‘seasonal’ at best.

Mindset and how you see what happens does influence your perspective on weather and everything else in life.

Now, I grew up in Ottawa so winter seems to me to be a season, not a misery.

And during this season I adjust my growing expectations. However, there is one great winter project that I love to do, no matter the weather. I love to prune in the winter.

Ann Vold’s Pasta Frittata Soup For added winter cheer this recipe of my mom’s will warm you up on the coldest of days: • 2 cups cold left over pasta (spaghetti or macaroni) • 2 tablespoons butter • 1/2 cup chopped onion (chopped finely) • 3/4 cup finely-chopped green • 3/4 cup finely chopped red or orange pepper • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. (Or Gouda and Havarti for a little more ‘bite’) • 5 eggs • 1/2 cup milk • 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese • 1 teaspoon dried basil • 1/2 teaspoon each salt and black pepper • Chopped fresh parsley to garnish 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Rinse the pasta in a colander under hot water to separate the pasta and drain well.

3. Melt the butter in an 8-inch oven proof skillet.

Add onion and peppers, saute about 5 minutes.

4. Add the pasta, toss well.

Then cook stirring often... about 3 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the cheese.

5. Beat the eggs, the milk, parmesan, basil, salt and black pepper in a bowl.

Pour the mixture over the pasta mixture.

6. Cook over low heat for 5 minutes or until the eggs almost set. Lift the bottom of the mixture with a spatula occasionally to let the liquid part run to the bottom of the pan.

7. Bake in 400 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until set.

8. Garnish the top with fresh parsley. When cooled slightly cut into wedges and serve with a green salad. This makes 4 servings and does warm you up after a winter workout!

Making sourdough ‘a labour of love’

335 on the Ridge Three years ago we started our sourdough “starter” in a little limestone building on Ridge Road and to my delight and surprise it is by far the strongest, loveliest and thriving starter I have ever worked with.

To say that making sourdough is a labour of love is an understatement.

It requires time, lots of attention and a passion. it’s literally like taking care of and feeding a small child.

Sourdough is the original method of bread fermentation and the starter culture is the beginning of the process.

All those years ago when we started ours it pulled from the wild yeast and bacteria in the building, the area, and the people maintaining it to make this magical bread we use today.

The magic is somewhat scientific as enzymes split starches into sugars to allow the yeasts and bacterias to feed madly on those sugars to produce carbon dioxide.

Once fermentation is in full swing we feed our bread with our starter and then feed our starter with more water and flour so the party can continue and we can make bread day in and day out.

Our whole world here at 335 really revolves around our three-yearold” baby” as we like to call it in house.

The sandwiches we serve are on it, our pizza dough is leavened by it, bread crumbs, toast, crostini, bread service, focaccia they are all brought to you by our little “baby”!

I am happy to report

that our bread still maintains three simple ingredients-organic Canadian flour, water, and sea salt, unlike most store bought breads that can have 25 or more different ingredients.

Sourdough has so many factors that effect its outcome, not just the flour used but also the terroir.

Just like wine sourdough fermentation is hugely impacted by the climate and environment in which it is produced.

Niagara Outdoor Show returns Sunday Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer

With Spring just around the corner, the Niagara Outdoor Show is set to return to the Fort Erie Leisureplex.

Planned for Sunday, March 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the annual show now in its 16th year offers something for everyone.

“This is something that all ages can enjoy. Grandparents can bring their grandkids, or parents can bring their kids,” says Bill Whitehead, the show’s organizer.

The show will offer a wide variety of vendors, everything from fishing equipment, apparel, conservation groups and more.

“From what I understand, there isn’t any retail outlets in Fort Erie currently where people can purchase a fishing licence,” Whitehead explained, and added that anyone who wants one won’t want to miss this opportunity.

“If you can, I’d say bring your expired Outdoors Card to make the process go a bit faster,” he said.

Melanie Frost, a local tournament bass professional is retuning and promises to have “a boatload” of tackle on hand.

Artists duke it out on canvas

Artists from across Niagara showed off their amazing talent during Art Battle on Friday, March 1 at the Sanctuary Centre for the Arts in downtown Ridgeway. The event is part of a worldwide live painting competition. Artists from their respective communities create the best painting they can in 20 minutes. The painters are split up into two 20 minute rounds and the top two painters from each round compete in the final round for the Art Battle winner title. The winner moves on for a chance to compete in regional events, and hopefully onto the Art Battle National Competition. Local artists Debi Selib-Haig, Chelsea Macsai and Melani Ryke all took on the challenge. Macsai and Ryke both made it to the final round of four, but it was Brigitte Winchester of St Catharines that ended the battle strong and painted her way to a win.

Meteors beginning to burn out: 0-2 in play-off series Bryanne Martin Fort Erie Observer

It’s play-off time in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Fort Erie Meteors are 0-2 in the series against the Hamilton Kilty B’s.

Fort Erie hit the road on Feb. 25 to play Game 1 at Mountain Arena and lost 7-4 to Hamilton.

The Meteors fell to the Kilty Bs 5-1 in their match-up held Saturday at the Fort Erie Leisureplex.

Neither team had a good start to the game as both the Meteors and Kilty B’s were handed warm-up violations.

The Kilty B’s out powered the Meteors and scored at 4:59 in the first period.

Both teams pushed each other, which resulted in the Meteors taking multiple penalties and the Kilty Bs taking one.

Luckily for goalie Jacob Hearne, the Meteors were able to use a strong penalty kill to make sure Hamilton’s 1-0 lead didn’t grow larger in the first period.

The second period was riddled with penalties.

The game didn’t improve for the Meteors as the Kilty Bs were able to take use the power play and score at 10:05.

A little back and forth action happened the rest of the period with penalty minutes adding to the clock more than score. The second ending in a score of 2-0.

As the third got underway it looked as though the Meteors were suffering listlessness from the action around them especially after the Kilty Bs racked up another goal at 6:46.

The gap between the Meteors and Kilty Bs was showing, but a bit of hope came when Cail Cirillo was able to get one by the Kilty Bs goalie at 14:49.

It looked as though the Meteors were back in and found their gusto. Keeping the

play going and challenging the Kilty Bs more and more the Meteors seemed like a different team from the beginning of the period.

As the last couple of minutes approach the end the period, the Meteors pulled goalie Jacob Hearne to see if an extra player could help get another goal, regrettably the Kilty Bs found the empty net at 18:14 which would be the last of the scoring for either team. The game ended with a score of 5-1 in favour of Hamilton.

No stars were awarded this game.

Pink Shirt Day reminds students to be kind Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer

Bullying isn’t okay.

That’s why students and staff at schools across Niagara wore pink last week in recognition of Pink Shirt Day. Grade 8 student Autum Smith says the story behind Pink Shirt Day is special because it was created as a result of two students who wouldn’t tolerate bullying.

It started in Nova Scotia in 2007 when high school students David Shepherd and Travis Price, took a stand against bullying after a Grade 9 student was harassed and threatened for wearing a pink shirt. Shepherd and Price bought dozens of pink shirts and handed them to their male classmates to wear the next day.

The pink shirts had such an amazing response, now Pink Shirt Day is celebrated annually across Canada.

While awareness is growing, Grade 8 student Kirstyn Hipkiss says bullying is still a problem and children are teens are facing it in person as well as online.

the kids that are bullies don’t have a lot of self-esteem.

They’re afraid to be themselves, so when they make fun of someone for something, it makes them feel better about themselves,” Grade 7 student Taylor Dawdy explained.

Grade 7 student Claudia Young said the way John Brant’s students look at bullying is changing because it’s something that’s being talked about in the classroom every day.

“I think we’re becoming more of a community,” she said.

“We’re learning that we’re better together then we are separated. I feel safer in a community of friends. I know I’d feel a bit more afraid if I didn’t have some of the connections I’ve made,”

Steve Webb, who became the principal of John Brant at the beginning of the school, says regardless of whether it’s Pink Shirt Day or not, he encourages teachers and students to discuss choosing to be kind on a daily basis.

One example is a poster hanging in the Grade 7 classroom that gives ideas of “cool things to do.”

These things, Dawdy explained, could be anything from holding a door for someone, giving a person a nice compliment or simply saying hello.

Webb says students are educated about humankind’s responsibility to be kind to one another and to have respect for themselves,

for others and for the community.

“Responsibility, respect for one’s self, respect for others and for the community, should be expectations as opposed to rules,” he said.

The school offers a Me To We Club for students to promote social justice initiatives and inclusiveness to create a better world.

Other projects include designing John Brant’s own version of a pink shirt, Webb explained.

“When a student chooses to be kind, or maybe settle help settle an argument (between classmates) or help someone, that student would be presented with the pink shirt at our monthly assembly,” he said.

Ridgeway writer featured at Lakeside Books and Art Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer

Lorenzo Nicodemo is a big believer in the idea that life will take people where it wants them to go.

“You just have to let go and let it take you,” he says.

Over the years, Nicodemo recalls his wife asking him many times, “So when are you going to write that book you keep talking about?”

“I would tell her, ‘It’s not ready,’ and she would say, ‘What do you mean?’ and I would say, ‘When the time is right, I will know.’”

The book Nicodemo intended on writing, he explained, was 30 years in the making.

Finally, last April was the right time and the Ridgeway transplant sat down to write The Space Between Us, Discussions With My Grandchildren on Navigation of Life, which was published before the end of last year.

“I woke up one morning and I said to my wife, ‘It’s time,’ and she said, ‘For what?’

I told her, ‘It’s time to write my book.’”

Ridgeway resident Lorenzo Nicodemo recently published his first novel called called A Space Between, Discussions With My Grandchildren on Navigation of Life.

When Nicodemo started to write, the words flowed from his mind through his hand and onto the page.

“When I started writing, it just flowed,” he said, and added, “I didn’t plan it. I didn’t say ‘This is what I’m going to do,’ I just started to write it in a very non-traditional way.”

Within three months, he finished his story.

His book is about life, and it challenges the reader to look at their life in a different way. Nicodemo’s work invites the reader to consider the perspective that life is truly simple and far less complicated if we choose to make it so.

The book takes a non-traditional approach. It’s written as a narrative, and in it, Nicodemo has fictional discussions with his grandchildren as they sit in his own backyard. Through discussion, the characters take the reader on a journey and challenges readers to throw off self imposed shackles and to rediscover their true selves.

In the book, Nicodemo said the story is filled with insights, parables and mixed with some of his own real-life experiences.

“So, the best way I can explain is my grandkids come to visit and we end up sitting in the back yard under my tree near by Buddha and we carry on this conversation,” Nicodemo explained.

“The kids ask me questions like ‘How do you grow up?’ I tell them and then one thing leads to another,” he said.

Nicodemo will discuss his book during two upcoming dates. The author will be at Lakeside Books and Art in downtown Ridgeway for an Author’s Night on Friday, March 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

He’ll also be visiting the Centennial branch of the Fort Erie Public Library on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m.

Friendship Centre celebrates history and culture

The Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre held its annual Mid-Winter Pow Wow on Saturday afternoon.

Sarah Ferguson Fort Erie Observer Danni Schwartz, dressed in traditional colourful dance regalia, was proud to celebrate her cultural heritage and share it with others on the weekend.

“This is my first pow wow of the year.

I started dancing when I was 10 years old and it’s something that I enjoy doing and it makes me happy,” she explained.

“I’m here with my grandmother who lives in Niagara Falls.”

Schwartz, who lives in Toronto, made the trek all the way to Fort Erie to participate in the 24th annual Mid-Winter Pow Wow held Saturday at the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre on Buffalo Road.

The traditional pow wow began with a grand entry of participants, followed by performances of dancers, musicians, singers and drummers.

The festivities also highlighted aboriginal

food and crafts.

When asked to describe what a pow wow is, Schwartz said “it’s a celebration of Indigenous culture, a time for family and friends, and a time to learn new teachings.”

Sara Cotter, who also danced during the event, said the pow wow is an annual event that is meant as a celebration of life.

“By celebration of life, it’s not like when someone passes. This event represents reconciliation, and the ability to keep together our traditions and our knowledge.”

Cotter said the pow wow is also an opportunity to extend a welcoming hand to the community to learn more about Indigenous culture.

“At any given time during the day there will be anywhere between 300 to 500 people that come through the doors,” she said.

Local artist featured inside bookstore art gallery Bryanne Martin Fort Erie Observer Janet Montgomery is the next artist to be featured inside the Hall Art Gallery at Lakeside Books and Art in downtown Ridgeway.

For the last four years, the book shop on Ridge Road has offered a space for local artists to feature their work on a monthly basis.

For the month of March, art lovers are encouraged to stop inside the store to see Montgomery’s paintings.

Montgomery started painting and drawing when she was a teen, and she created her work mostly for family and friends.

When the artist started working as an adult, her painting was left to the side as life got busy.

While she put her paint brush down, her creativity didn’t go away.

As the owner of her own shop, Tulip Tree Floral, Montgomery was able to express her creative side through floral ar-

rangements.

But there came a time when Montgomery said she was ready to sell her store and make a return to canvas and Ridgeway is the perfect place to do just that.

Montogomery described Ridgeway as “very artsy, and added, “There is a lot of types of art: photography, paintings, sculpture and fabric. You can see a lot of it at the market. Art is evolving in the area.”

The bookstore drew her in to display her work because she is a local and small artist, which is something that Lakeside is known for, Montgomery said.

She has also previously displayed her artwork at the Crystal Ball Cafe in Crystal Beach.

She likes to display works that she likes from the many different mediums she uses like textured, acrylic and encaustic painting which is when you paint with hot Bryanne Martin/Fort Erie Observer beeswax.
