GROWING BUSINESS

In May, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held at K&F Auto Sales & Service to celebrate its grand opening.

In August, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the completion of Haumerson’s Pond warming house/shelter.

In August, a ground-breaking ceremony was held to kick off the start of construction of Country Inn & Suites Hotel and Conference Center.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

REALITY FAIR – On May 31, the Fort Atkinson 8th grade students participated in the 10th Annual Reality Fair at the Fort Atkinson Middle School. The goal of the program is to provide students an understanding of financial decision making and prioritizing needs over wants.

EXIT INTERVIEWS – On May 18, the Senior Portfolio Exit Interviews were conducted at the Fort Atkinson High School and fifty chamber members volunteered their time to talk with the graduating seniors about their career plan.

NEW TEACHER WELCOME – On August 23, the Chamber and Nasco International cosponsored a New Teacher Welcome. The Fort Atkinson School District’s thirty-three new teachers and administrators were provided a breakfast, an information session, and welcome gift bags filled with many donated items from Chamber businesses.

CAREER TOURS – In April and November, the Fort Atkinson Middle School students attended career classes on a field trip to Nasco, Wisconsin Packaging Corp. and Ball Corp. Each business led a one-hour discussion and tour which gave 8th graders firsthand knowledge of careers available locally.

FBLA PROGRAM – The Chamber’s 9-month FBLA program from September through May consisted of working with the Future Business Leaders of America at the Fort Atkinson Middle School. Chamber members with expertise in the FBLA topics of marketing, banking, credit, and ethics volunteered to teach in the classrooms.

LUNCH AND LEARN – The Chamber organized a series of professional development sessions for members hosted at Fort HealthCare’s auditorium and sponsored by local businesses. The topics for 2017 included working with a business coach to lead change in your organization; the Federal Labor Standards Act; local education efforts; and Inspire Jefferson County.

PROJECT LEAD, an acronym for Leadership Enhancement for Area Development, is a nine-month community leadership-development program sponsored by the Chamber. Its goal is to prepare participants for public leadership roles. The 2017 Project LEAD group raised funds to purchase 250 Spanish and bilingual books, audiobooks, movies and periodicals for the Dwight Foster Public Library.


2017 EVENTS & HIGHLIGHTS

CHAMBER GOLF OUTING – The 26th Annual Chamber Golf Outing was held at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club on July 6 where 26 teams participated in the fun.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS, held quarterly and hosted by Chamber member businesses, provide the perfect opportunity for members to network in a casual setting. 2017 participating businesses included Reena Senior Living, Rock River Dental, Jones Market, FCCU and Mike Foerster Real Estate Group.

BREWS, BANDS AND BARGAINS – Retailers and restaurants participated in the new summer event on July 29 offering customers some of the best bargains of the year.

RHYTHM ON THE RIVER – The Chamber hosted the 15th Annual Rhythm on the River on August 26 featuring Katie Mack & the Moan and The Love Monkeys. Local business mascots joined the festivities taking photos and interacting with the crowd.

RED BOX GIVE-AWAY – The Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored its Holiday Open House on December 2 which promotes shopping in Fort Atkinson. Shoppers entered the Holiday Red Box drawings at participating merchants for a chance to win the Giant Gift Box and chamber gift certificates valued at $1,500 as a reward for shopping locally. Purchases made at the participating stores supported the 2017 Merchants Making a Difference recipients; the Fort Atkinson Historical Society and the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry.

HOLIDAY PARADE – The 22nd Annual Holiday Parade kicked off the holiday season on November 11 as sixty units made their way down Main Street while spectators enjoyed music and holiday lights. Following the parade, the United Way held their annual Chili Cook-Off at the Municipal Building.

FORT FARMERS MARKET celebrated its 15th year providing homegrown fruits, vegetables, baked goods, honey, flowers, and arts and crafts every Saturday from May through October. The Hoard Historical Museum hosted their walking tours of historic downtown Fort Atkinson during the Farmers Market on Arts Saturdays.

THE 24TH ANNUAL FORT KOSHKONONG RENDEZVOUS was held on May 27 & 28. This year was focused around the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade from 1825-1840. With many hands-on activities, visitors were able to experience everyday life of the fur traders.

THE FIRESIDE DINNER THEATRE was recognized with the 2017 Wisconsin Business Achievement Award in October. During the Wisconsin Business & Industry Luncheon, the Flowers Family Foundation Inc. of Stoughton presented the award to third generation owner and CEO, Ryan Klopcic. The Fireside continues to be Wisconsin’s number one motor coach destination drawing over 200,000 visitors annually.

Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce members joined Chamber staff on the Glacial River Trail bridge overlooking the Rock River for a video shoot. Jonathon Kelley, founder of Longwalk Media, filmed the video to promote the city of Fort Atkinson. Members sported their “Chamber On” shirts as Jonathon took aerial video footage with his drone.

FORT ATKINSON LIONS CLUB held its 31st annual Tour de Fort bike ride in August, bringing over 220 participants. The ride began at Jones Park with riders given the option of distance to ride; 16, 32, and 63 miles. The route included the Whitewater Lake Loop and made its way through Jefferson, Rock and Walworth Counties.

FRIENDS OF LORINE NIEDECKER hosted the 9th Annual Lorine Niedecker Wisconsin Poetry Festival on September 29th and 30th. Workshops and activities took place throughout Fort Atkinson, including Niedecker’s cabin on Blackhawk Island. The Fort Atkinson Farmers Market featured poet Paul Wiegel, who spent the morning writing over 200 poems for market attendees.
