When contact with a pointed object results in an entry hole in the foot, it causes a puncture wound. If ignored or improperly treated, this can result in an infection. The foreign body can be anything from a sliver of glass to a nail. The object, or a piece of it, along with any bacteria and/or dirt that collected on it, may remain in the wound. The deeper the wound, the more potential there is for complications. Thorough cleaning of the wound is critical. Medical intervention within 24 hours of incurring a puncture wound is important. Tests will determine if some portion of the foreign body is still present within the wound. If deemed necessary, antibiotics will be prescribed.
