Some Sugar Land residents to keep fighting apartments

Helping Drive the YMCA Future!

By Betsy Dolan

Sugar Land Mayor James Thompson called last week's joint meeting between the City Council and the Planning & Zoning Commission a "first" but residents of historic Sugar Land say they're more concerned with preserving history than making history. They're upset over a plan that would put 625 apartments in

Girl Scout bandits busted The two teens that are believed to have robbed a Girl Scout Troop selling cookie at the Bella Terra WalMart last week have been busted. Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said Thursday that a pair of Lakemont teens; one a juvenile and the other identified as Justin Rogers-Zenon, 18, have been taken into custody for robbing the Girl Scouts. Haenel recapped the robbery

explaining that last Saturday afternoon, shortly before 2 pm, a young Black male, approached a Girl Scout Justin Rogers-Zenon Cookie stand in front of the Bella Terra Walmart, located along State 99 and Bellaire Boulevard. According to Haenel, the teen acted like he was going to purchase cookies, but instead grabbed a cash box

and bolted to a small vehicle that had rolled up in front of the cookie stand waiting for him. Outraged, two of the Girl Scouts gave chase. One of the girls, a 15 year old, was knocked to the ground suffering bruises and abrasions. Community Volunteer Fire Department responded and treated her at the scene. Deputies searched the area for the suspects and their get-away vehicle but were GIRL SCOUT, continued on page 9

Others respond to Union Pacific plan Last week's article concerning Union Pacific's plan to add a second track down Highway 90A this summer was a call to action from Mayor Scarcella of Stafford. The Fort Bend Star thought it was appropriate to ask for the opinions of Missouri City and Sugar Land since this would

effect their citizens as well. Here are there official responses: Sugar Land: "The city has learned that Union Pacific Railroad plans to build a second railroad track along the U.S. Highway 90A corridor to ease train congestion, improve safety, and allow for two-way traffic through Sugar Land. UPRR says the double tracks will reduce the

need for trains to stop at sidings to pass each other, resulting in quicker train travel through Sugar Land and reduced wait times for drivers at crossings. The City is working closely with UPRR to clearly understand the proposed project and influence a positive outcome for the City." RESPOND, continued on page 9

the historic district as part of the Imperial Development project. Last week, the City Council and Commission held a joint meeting to discuss the plan after the Commission unanimously voted to recommend the apartments at their meeting on February 23. New Voter ID law may not come to pass Photo ID may not be necessary or provisional ballot may be given to those with no ID By Elsa Maxey

The Texas Voter ID law that would affect Fort Bend County and Texas voters in the 2012 upcoming elections may not come to pass. It was sent to the governor for his signature by the state legislature when it met this past year, and he signed it into law. Up until this week, the measure was believed to go into effect. But on Monday, the U.S. Justice Department put it on hold, and reportedly said in a letter sent to the state that it may disproportionately harm Hispanics.

Gary Gillen, a Fort Bend area political consultant says “one needs valid identification to fly and cash a check.” He also believes the voting rolls should be equally protected. The truth of the matter, however, is that Senate Bill 14 from the state legislature, although signed into law, cannot be enacted until it has federal level preclearance. Fort Bend County Elections Administrator John Oldham said that until then, voters going to the precincts will

"I was disappointed and I viewed it as a slap in the face that the mayor invited Johnson to speak three or four times and we weren't allowed to respond," said Yocel Alonso, an attorney and resident of the historic district. "We were frozen out," said Leon Anhaiser, a former Imperial Sugar executive and resident of the historic district. "Johnson had free access to the podium without the citizens being able to say a word." The Fort Bend Star did attempt to contact Mayor Thompson and several council members by email and phone for reaction but were unable to reach them. A new nickname.....Texas Gobernor Rick Perry has been dubbed “Governor Good Hair” by me, other columnists, bloggers, and even the voting public (although I think the term was first given to him by the sadly departed Molly Ivins). But (thank goodness) the national press has finally

for Fort Bend Pol. Ad paid by John Minchew for Sheriff Campaign, Cheryl Minchew Treasurer, 1831 Pitts Rd., Richmond, TX 77406

picked up on the fact that Texas enacted a trans vaginal sonogram last year. A trans vaginal sonogram is one in which a 10” probe is inserted into a woman’s vagina if the age of the fetus is questionable. Most early abortions would require it. It amounts to medical “rape” since it is done even if the woman protests. In Texas she can either have it or not have an abortion. According to the news clips shown this week, Gov. Perry was gleeful to sign it into law. So we can finally retire the “Good Hair” appel-

lation and start calling him “Governor Vaginal Probe.” Of course that is also a term we can use for our Fort Bend state legislative officials who voted for the bill--Dr. Vaginal Probe Zerwas, and Rep. Vaginal Probe Charlie Howard. Also Senator Vaginal Probe Glenn Hegar and Senator Vaginal Probe Joan Huffman, who both cosponsored the bill. Must have been quite a stretch for Huffman as her husband supposedly made his money in nightclubs and gambling and nightclubs and gambling financed her first foray into

Is Olson afraid to debate Carlson? US Congressional District 22 Seat Needs a Leader tle here. “Seriously? This is what’s most important to him right now? He’s totally out of touch,” one constituent told Carlson. Olson is whining the same Obama rhetoric: It’s somebody else’s fault. In Pearland, Olson complained that Obama is the bad guy and cast blame on our president’s shoulders. Who’s allowed Obama to cause utter destruction to our great nation? Who holds the purse strings? Who voted for the debt ceiling increase while not solving our financial crisis that we will again face in September—after the primary is over? The voter understands “the strategy” of District 22’s Congressional rubber-legged establishment incumbent. Olson has been an integral part of the mess in Washington. He ignores the pleas of his constituents. Where was Olson when the oil moratorium was put in place and due process was violated under our Constitution? Not a peep from him. Never in our history has America had such opportunities put in front of Congress to fight the intrusive unconstitutional mandates the last three years, yet Olson has sat back in the corner, quiet as a rubber-legged mouse. When Olson was asked in Pearland why he wasn’t in Reid’s office nonstop, kicking at his door and fighting against the Dodd-Frank Act (400 regulations in a single act, run by a bureau, without Congressional authority) and for the district, his response was “Because it smells over

there in Harry’s office,” as he laughed to the crowd. The response was not well received. Carlson explains, “The voters get it. They understand the burden that Olson’s vote placed on our country when voting for the debt ceiling increase—one of many votes Olson sided with Pelosi on since being in office—while many constituents begged that he not do so. (1) Olson’s violation and breach of the Constitution gave the president authority to increase the deficit without having to get the required approval by the Senate with a 2/3 majority vote; and, (2) after enactment—for the first time in history—our credit rating dropped from a AAA rating to a AA rating. Utterly devastating to our fiscal perception across the globe. Olson, a member of the Republican majority-held House, handed the president an unconstitutional win. This is why we need someone with a strong finance background, someone who gets it. We need someone who is truly committed to our Constitution—understands it— and one who is a courageous, successful business leader who will fight to restore our country, one who represents our conservative values and principles and one who is willing to stand her ground in making the hard choices. As Carlson states in her book, Face It, We’re Broken, “That’s why we need term limits.” Carlson further adds, “We cannot get it wrong this time.” Check out Carlson’s educational website www.barbaracarlsonforuscongress.com.

state legislative politics. Maybe she has been “born again.” Don’t worry. I will remind you again before the election who voted for the bill. iPads need love too..... Many people have asked me to weigh in on the iPad discussion since FBISD is going to invest millions of dollars in them. First off, the two critical thinking board members-Hohnbaum and Rice-voted against the program. That gives me pause. Second, I love the iPads. I love them so much I gave my 5 and 7 years old grandsons iPads for their birthdays and Christmas last year. (Also my 18 year old granddaughter and 50 year old daughter.) I noticed right away that my grandsons loved them. They downloaded free games which honed their math and word skills, and we had to beg them to watch TV as they were too busy playing with their iPads. However, after about a year and half, they sort of lost interest. Long cars trips and a weekend at grandma’s brings out the iPads again, but they have pretty much learned all they can from the iPad and use them mostly for games and to watch UTube now. The now-6-year-old shows an inordinate interest in UTube videos about making a gun out of a ball point pen, and a bomb out of a cigarette lighter. We have hidden our pens and we don’t have cigarette lighters anyway. The now-8-yearold wants to use his adult lap top to edit movies. The iPad bores him while the adults for which I bought the iPads have always used them for games.

So if the school district gives the students the iPads to use a lot, they will probably get bored. If they keep them in their protective covers and used them infrequently, they will not learn. My concern is that few studies exist yet about the educational values of the iPad. It would seem to me if FBISD wanted to do a study, then Apple should be willing to supply the hardware. Apple has more money than Ben Gump ($80 billion by some counts). I think FBISD Superintendent Dr. Tim Jenney wants to win some kind of award, He has been trying to spend that $18 million on some kind of “new deal” since someone figured out that was how much FBISD had laying around. I still love my iPad. You can email me on it. (Beverly@ fortbendstar.com) but since FBISD has $18 million burning a hole in its pocket, maybe the district should rehire some teachers and reduce class sizes. Or fund some programs cut in this last legislative session. A sad week......Bob Sandlin, a long-time Quail Valley resident and the former husband of Star editor Jean Sandlin, passed away this weekend. He was 81. He was the father of Jean’s children and they had remained friends all these years. Employees at the Star grieve with Jean. Arrangements are pending. B.K. Fort Bend ISD names 47 students as 2012 National Merit Finalists

AUTO TALK with David & Cindy Fauvelle

David & Cindy Fauvelle Owners of Auto Central Car Care Center

DIRECT INJECTION PROBLEMS

In recent years, auto manufacturers have been introducing gasoline direct injection (GDI) systems paired with turbo-charging, which enables them to downsize engines and increase fuel economy without sacrificing performance. While most fuelinjected engines use indirect fuel injection that premixes the fuel and air in the intake manifold, direct injection also has air flowing into the cylinder from the intake manifold, but the fuel is sprayed into the cylinder separately. As beneficial as GDI systems are, they are showing drivability issues related to carbon buildup on the intake valves, which results in hard starting and random misfire codes. This is caused by fuel’s failure to spray on the backside of the valves, where the detergents can work to remove deposit buildup. Get the maximum reliability and safety from the car you rely on daily by inspecting parts routinely and replacing them before they fail. Please call AUTO CENTRAL at 281499-9684 to schedule a maintenance check. One of our ASE Certified Master Technicians can inspect the various components of the vehicle, including the valves, belts and hoses, brake fluid, pads, and shoes. We service domestic, foreign, and fleet vehicles. Visit us at 2526 5th St., Stafford. Do you have a car care question? Visit our discussion board on Facebook-Auto Central. Autocentralautomotive.com. HINT: The above-mentioned deposit buildup associated with gasoline direct injection systems can be corrected with a thorough cleaning of the intake manifold and intake valves.

FBISD students who have been named finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. Todd Riddle of ReMax Fine Properties has been named Sienna Plantation’s the topselling Realtor for 2011, the seventh consecutive year the Realtor pair has earned the prestigious top spot. During the remarkable sevenyear run, the husband-and-wife team has sold 71 homes in the award-winning, masterplanned community valued in excess of $22.2 million. Besides their successful real estate careers, the Riddles enjoy time on the golf course, a hobby that wasn’t lost on Johnson

who presented Linda and Todd with a Pebble Beach golf trip as a reward for their success. “We’re not just selling homes, we’re selling a community,” says Linda. “Families are looking for a master-planned community with easy access to the Texas Medical Center and other points around Houston. They’re very impressed when they see what Sienna has to offer.” Among its countless amenities, the 7,000-acre masterplanned community is home to three water parks including the south’s largest private water

of twisting slides, the all-new Sienna Springs Resort Pool, 36 parks and playgrounds, the Camp Sienna Sports Complex, the Sienna Plantation Golf Club, a 6,000-square-foot fitness center, eight lighted tennis courts and lakes for fishing and kayaking. Families in the community attend schools in the renowned Fort Bend Independent School. This fall, Sienna Plantation will welcome the opening of the community’s first private school, Sienna Lutheran Academy. A project of Johnson Development, the community

Stafford’s first of the month City Council meeting covered a lot of compelling and informative topics, such as; the retiring of Phil Horton, the Assistant Chief of Police, who served the city for 28 years; the discussion of the audited financial statements and preservation of their AA Bond

Rating, and the budget for the city-wide cleanup slated for April 21. However, the most interesting subject concerned the discussion of the mobile spay and neuter clinic making a request to park their bus at the Stafford Centre parking lot. Dr. des Vignes-Kendrick of Fort Bend County Health and Human Services approached the podium and graciously presented the plan to borrow the parking lot of the Stafford Centre on Tuesday, March 20, from 6:30am to 4:00pm, so that they may perform approximately 25 free spay and neuter procedures for qualifying families on government assistance. Mayor Scarcella opened the discussion stating that he commends and supports the SNAP program, but he did not feel the Stafford Centre parking lot was the proper place to hold this. He explained, “This is not the image we want for the Stafford Centre. Houston would not put an event like this in front of the Hobby Center or the Wortham Theater.” Dr. Kendrick advised that last year in Fort Bend County 218 stray dogs were impounded, resulting in 48 euthanizations, costing the county roughly $26,000. The mayor recommended 5th Street Park as an alternate area to hold the event. Other Council Members agreed that the cause was worthy, but also wanted to change the location. Dr. Kendrick explained that the Stafford Centre parking lot was chosen for their visibility. Mayor Scarcella suggested that if they wanted visibility,

the parking lot of City Hall has over sixty-thousand cars that drive by per day. It was agreed that the mobile clinic could hold their event at the far end of City Hall, in front of the fire-station.

Medications and Sleep

Hours spent sleeping are critical to the proper functioning of our bodies during waking hours. Sleep is indeed essential for daily life. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep occurs about every one and a half to two hours during sleep, and makes up approximately one-quarter of overall sleep time. Non-REM sleep is divided into three stages. Stage 1 is the time transitioning from being awake to sleeping. During this stage, the lightest sleep, accounting for only about 5% of total sleep time, occurs. Stage 2 is intermediate sleep, which accounts for approximately half of total sleep time. Stage 3 is known as deep sleep. A protective barrier for the brain, known as the blood brain barrier (BBB), regulates admission of substances into the brain. However, certain medications may cross the BBB, and in turn impact our sleep. Medications that influence the central nervous system (CNS) and may affect sleep include antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Doxepin (Silenor) is a type of tricyclic antidepressant that decreases the time it takes to fall asleep and decreases waking once asleep. Diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan) are benzodiazepine medications that may be prescribed to treat insomnia or anxiety. These medications decrease the time it takes to fall asleep and also decrease the amount of time spent in the light sleep stage.

Notice of the Application and Preliminary Decision will be published and mailed to those who are on the county-wide mailing list and to those who are on the mailing list for this application. That notice will contain the deadline for submitting public comments. PUBLIC COMMENT / PUBLIC MEETING. You may submit public comments or request a public meeting on this application. The purpose of a public meeting is to provide the opportunity to submit comments or to ask questions about the application. TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing. OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant and material, or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments, and the Executive Director’s decision on the application, will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision and for requesting a contested case hearing. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in state district court. TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; and, the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose. Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. The Commission will only grant a contested case hearing on disputed issues of fact that are relevant and material to the Commission’s decision on the application. Further, the Commission will only grant a hearing on issues that were raised in timely filed comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. TCEQ may act on an application to renew a permit for discharge of wastewater without providing an opportunity for a contested case hearing if certain criteria are met. MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below. AGENCY CONTACTS AND INFORMATION. All written public comments and requests must be submitted to the Office of the Chief Clerk, MC 105, TCEQ, P.O. Box 13087, Austin, TX 78711-3087 or electronically at www.tceq.state.tx.us/about/comments.html. If you need more information about this permit application or the permitting process, please call TCEQ Public Education Program, Toll Free, at 1-800687-4040. Si desea información en Español, puede llamar al 1-800-687-4040. General information about TCEQ can be found at our web site at www.tceq.state.tx.us. Further information may also be obtained from Weatherford Farms, Inc. at the address stated above or by calling James W. Weatherford III at 281-498-7261. Issuance Date: March 8, 2012

another rail is to accommodate more rail traffic. I do not recall a road being widened to save gas... and not increasing the traffic." Former Council Member and Sugar Mill resident for over thirty years, Dennis Parmer, had this to say, "It is inevitable that a second track will increase train traffic on the Highway 90A Corridor. With the expansion of the Panama Canal, larger ships with container freight will have access to ports along the Gulf of Mexico. Any train traffic that will be relieved due to adding a second track will be offset by more trains traveling through our City. The question becomes, how do we ensure safety, noise control, and quality of life for the residents." A good question indeed.

some did not have a problem with it, like Roberta Selesky, resident of Covington Woods for over twentyone years. She said, "I've ridden Amtrak and experienced how much stopping and starting is involved in areas with one track. It takes a lot of power for a train to get back up to speed. A second track will mean less wait time. I also see this a progress for our City." The following comments were made by a Missouri City resident who wanted to remain anonymous, but has live in the Fort Bend area for over fifty years. He said, "As it has been pointed out, the right-of-way already exists and the railroad does not need our permission to do this. I truly expect the reason behind the addition of

County encourages early voting after redistricting confusion By Betsy Dolan Voters in Fort Bend County are being urged to cast their ballots early to avoid potential confusion after a chaotic redistricting battle that pushed the primary election back to Tuesday, May 29. Legal challenges to the state’s new political maps delayed the elections from their original date of March 6. Now that court-ordered maps are in place and the primary date

has been set, Fort Bend County is facing several challenges with having elections in May as well as with getting updated election information to voters. "We're encouraging people to be patient", said John Oldham, Fort Bend County Elections Administrator. "Everyone who wants to vote and who is registered to vote will be able to vote." One area of concern are those voter certificates that

expired on December 31, 2011. Replacement voter registration cards will automatically renew and, in compliance with federal law, be mailed to voters by April 25. Once voters get their new registration cards, they should pay attention to their assigned voting precinct as it may have changed due to redistricting. "Half of the voters in Fort Bend County will go to a new polling place which is adding to voter

confusion and explains the push for early voting," Oldham said. Further complicating matters is the quick turn around time between the cities and schools election on May 12 and the primary on May 29. "Basically it means we have to run two elections at the same time," Oldham said. In addition, Republicans and Democrats will not share voting booths like they did in 2010. "This year, each political party

eventually get to their homes. "We're worried about our quality of life," said Anne Hoelscher, Bridlewood Estates Vice President. "We understand that things change but we really want to protect what we have out here." Most troubling for residents is talk of annexation by the City of Rosenberg. While discussions with city officials have been amiable and Bridlewood is not on the city's fast track for annexation at this point, residents would prefer not to be annexed at all. They are worried about increased fees for services and what it would mean to their autonomy. Rosenberg's City Manager, Jack Hamlett, said he understands Bridlewood's concerns but having subdivisions in unincorporated areas makes it difficult for the

city's long range planning. "Because of extraterritorial jurisdiction, people who move into unincorporated areas have to assume that they'll be annexed into the city at some point," Hamlett said. "It allows us to plan for the long haul, for roads, for water needs and for the tax revenue to pay for all of those things." One way Bridlewood Estates has delayed annexation is to enter into a fire services agreement with the City of Rosenberg. The city had provided fire protection to unincorporated areas with funding partially reimbursed by Fort Bend County. But as costs increased, Hamlett said, it became necessary for Rosenberg to cancel that service. Bridlewood residents were also losing their fire insurance because of the distance to the nearest Rosenberg fire station. As part of the new fire service agreement, Rosenberg

pproximately 30 to 40% of women who have had breast cancer surgery will develop LYMPHEDEMA. I know that's not what you want to hear, but I am on your side and I am here to help educate you about this condition. LYMPHEDEMA is an accumulation of protein rich fluid that builds up in the arm, chest or back. LYMPHEDEMA can develop soon after surgery or radiation treatment. But it can also begin months or even years later. During surgery the doctor usually removes 1 lymph node from the underarm area to see if the cancer has spread. Some lymph vessels that carry fluid from the arm to the rest of the body are also removed. Removing lymph nodes and vessels from the underarm changes the way the lymph fluid flows on that side of your body. If the fluid cannot drain from these areas the excess fluid builds up causing swelling, or lymphedema. Your body can regenerate lymph vessels, but not lymph nodes. If you are experiencing any symptoms such as a feeling of tightness or heaviness or pins and needles on the side of your body that was treated for breast cancer, you may have lymphedema. One arm may appear larger than the other. Your shoulder may ache. There could be shooting pains or pain in the joints similar to arthritis. We are here to help. To learn more about the PREVENTION - TREATMENT and MANAGEMENT of LYMPHEDEMA you can check out our website at www.hopelymphedema.com Unfortunately some doctors are unaware of LYMPHEDEMA, but together we can educate everyone. Our goal is to make a difference in your life. There is HOPE for LYMPHEDEMA you don't "just have to live with it". residents say what they really need is a legitimate traffic light that will stop traffic on FM 762 and allow residents to safely turn left during peak morning times. The Grand Parkway project looms as a major worry for residents as well. Segment C is a 26 mile stretch that would connect US 59 to SH 288 and would essentially wrap around Bridlewood. "There are no new developments with Segment C right now", said Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Commissioner, James Patterson, "This project has been challenging because nobody wants it in their backyard. We have to try and be respectful of environmental concerns like the hardwood forest and eagle's nests and the George Observatory and neighborhoods like Bridlewood." For now Bridlewood residents say they are hoping to walk the line between maintaining the best of what they have and trying to compromise on the rest.

The primary election will happen the Tuesday after Memorial Day. We're asking voters to consider casting early ballots. We just don't want voters so confused that they regard it as too much of a hassle to vote," Oldham said. Early voting for the primary election begins on May 14 and ends May 25. Voters can find updated election information at www.VoteTexas.gov.

others who oppose the apartments. To date, three Homeowner's Associations in the historic district have officially voted against the apartments, most recently the Venetian Estates HOA. Petitions are circulating and residents are being encouraged to continue emailing their council members and attend the next public hearing on the apartments which has not been scheduled yet. The bigger issue, though for those who oppose the apartments is getting at least four council members on their side. "This is only round two," said Alonso. "We only need 4 votes. If we get four votes, game over."

"For 50 years we have fought apartments in Sugar Land," said Anhaiser. We want to be part of a community that protects homeowners. This is contrary to what Sugar Land was built on." Yocel and Anhaiser say they plan to keep fighting along with the other 2,000 residents who live in the historic district and

will build a new fire station closer to Bridlewood, which is slated to open in August of 2013. While Bridlewood is trying to avoid annexation and what they perceive as unwanted government interference, the community has turned to a government agency, the Texas Department of Transportation, to try and get a stoplight installed at FM 762 and Berdett Road. Residents say the simple act of turning left from Berdett onto FM 762 has become a daily battle as traffic has increased due to the opening of Reading Junior High and George Ranch High School. "From about 7:15 to 8:15 the traffic is terrible," said Steenbergen. "People get so frustrated that they just turn in front of oncoming traffic. It's like they're trying to commit suicide." The subdivision was successful in getting a flashing light installed at the intersection and even paid for a sheriff's deputy to direct traffic for a short time. But

will have their own voting booths and their own poll workers at all 64 polling locations", Oldham said. "Which means twice as much equipment and workers are needed at each voting site." The long Memorial Day weekend is also a problem as it occurs just before the primary election day on May 29. Polling locations, like schools, will not be open on Monday for the election set-up and there are concerns that poll workers may not be available for training over the long holiday weekend. "It seems confusing and complicated but at least things are back on track now. Voters will get new voter certificates.
