Sienna Plantation’s village of Sawmill Lake announces new, luxury patio homes

D

arling Homes and Trendmaker Homes will add 38 new, luxury patio homes in the Village of Sawmill Lake, Sienna Plantation’s newest village by The Johnson Development Corp.

Darling Homes, with its long-standing patio home presence in Sienna Plantation, will offer 19 luxury patio homes on 55’ homesites with distinctive, one and two-story floor plans from 1,900 - 3,000 square feet featuring private master suites, large secondary bedrooms, gourmet kitchens, media rooms and covered porches.

Trendmaker Homes will offer another 19 luxury patio homes on 60’ homesites with floorplans from 2,433 – 3,085 square feet with open entertaining spaces, wellappointed upgrades, beautiful courtyards, large patios and three-car garages.

Fort Bend County among the Top 10 counties for employment growth, reports U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

F

ort Bend County ranked ninth in the nation’s largest counties for percentage increase in employment from September 2013 to September 2014, according to a recent report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). BLS, the independent statistical arm of the U.S. Department of Labor, released results showing that Fort Bend achieved an increase in employment of 5.1 percent, well above the national average of 2.0 percent. The county also outperformed the Texas overall employment growth of 3.1 percent.

“Fort Bend County continues to demonstrate why it consistently garners accolades for employment, quality of life, education and being a place for businesses to thrive. The fact that our county ranks among the top 10 nationwide for

employment growth clearly underscores the benefits Fort Bend offers to businesses, residents and potential future employers,” said Jeff Wiley, president and CEO of the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council.

With recent business expansions and relocation announcements such as First Data, AOI and NALCO Champion, Fort Bend County is one of the fastest-growing counties in a thriving state, nearing the top in list after list. From energy and development to education and hospitality, business is booming here, attracting a sizeable share of Fortune 500 companies and major corporations. Fort Bend County was also recognized with the highest percentage increase in employment in the U.S. from September 2012 to September 2013 by BLS.

The new patio homes, ideal for young families and active empty nesters, will be located in the Village of Sawmill Lake neighborhood of Rosewood, just off Sienna Parkway.

“We’re expecting strong interest from those who raised their families in Sienna Plantation now looking to downsize while staying close to friends, family and grandchildren,” notes Amy Rino, division president, Darling Homes, Houston Division.

Darling Homes and Trendmaker Homes will open their fully-furnished patio model homes in May to coincide with the grand opening of the Village of Sawmill Lake.

However pre-sales will be available earlier in the spring.

Named after the historic sawmills which operated on the property in the mid 1800’s, the Village of Sawmill Lake will offer 500 homesites along with a new Fort Bend ISD elementary and middle school scheduled to open in 2017. s a firm that focuses on retirement income planning, most of our clientele is over the age of 50. Over the years, however, clients have asked us to work with their kids and grandkids. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital debuts BIG® and LOUD® therapy for Parkinson’s patients

H

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is now a certified provider of the proven BIG® and LOUD® speech and physical therapy courses for patients with Parkinson’s disease.

The courses were developed by Lee Silverman Voice Treatments (LSVT Global), an Arizona-based organization that specializes in helping patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders through the development of unique technology-assisted therapies.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s experienced therapy staff are excited to now offer this therapy.

“Patients with Parkinson’s disease often find that their voices are as impacted as their bodies,” says Toby Yaltho, M.D., board-certified neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders with Methodist Sugar Land Neurology Associates. “They lose volume or develop monotone, hoarse voices that make it difficult to be understood – primarily because the disease is affecting the muscles that control breathing and speech. As a result, they become increasingly reluctant to speak up, especially in public settings. It directly impacts their ability to communicate with others, even family members.”

Patients with Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders also frequently lose the ability to recognize that they are speaking more softly due to deficits in their sensory processes.

To overcome these obstacles, the LOUD program includes an intensive month-long therapy course that improves vocal intensity, quality and variation through a series of repetitive exercises that stimulate the muscles of the larynx and improve breathing. At the same time, patients are taught to recognize when and how to speak louder to facilitate understanding.

The BIG therapy system, which was

developed using many of the same principles as LOUD, gives patients increased mobility, balance and range of movement with their bodies and limbs.

“This is an extremely beneficial program for patients with Parkinson’s disease,” says Dr. Yaltho. “I’ve seen patients make dramatic improvements in just a few weeks through BIG and LOUD sessions. The training and exercises give them confidence and control and improves their quality of life tremendously.”

Both BIG and LOUD therapies require patients to attend four one-hour classes a week for one month, working directly with an individual therapist who provides oneon-one coaching and assistance. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s speech and physical therapists, Dan Kershner, PT; Kimberly Kainer, MOT, OTR; and Kathleen Thoede, MA, CCC-SLP; have been specially trained and certified by LSVT Global to provide direct instruction to patients. The therapists at Houston Methodist Sugar Land are the only certified BIG therapists in Fort Bend County.

Clements student visit to China:

Opportunity to see place in global reality

I

t was just the other day, when this 17 year old FBISD junior from Clements High School would wear only slippers in the “home” of his host family in Foshan, China, who lives on the entire 17th floor of a high rise building. Foshan in the Chenchang District of China is a community many Fort Benders probably know something about as it is the one that launched the Judge Bob Hebert-led Fort Bend County Global Initiative started in 2011. Students from Foshan have already visited local school districts and the educational, international student exchange visits continue to be reciprocated as part of a relationship between Fort Bend County and Foshan.

Raphael Maxwell Baly Chaumette, better known as Rafe by his friends, along with 10 other students from FBISD’s Leadership 101 Program, a district-wide leadership and service group for juniors, was selected in November and he took the trip to Foshan, China with teacher sponsors. Rafe and the other FBISD students left on Jan. 3 for two weeks, along with 20 others from LCISD and George Ranch High School. It’s a trip that will, no doubt, turn out to have a lasting impact on their young, educational lives. Rafe, who’s been in FBISD schools from day one, except for his freshman and a part of his sophomore year at Kinkaid High School, said he wanted to go to China “to meet new people, I wanted to see if Chinese food was the same as it was here, I wanted to learn about what it was like.”

Rafe said he imaged this part of China would be “really smoky, heavily polluted.” He also said he “thought people would be narrow minded, not open to new things,” and “thought the food would be similar.” Those expectations were all debunked as he reflects on the events that started when he landed at Hong Kong International Airport after a 14-hour flight one evening and took a ferry to Foshan the following day. One could say, he traveled into the future, perhaps his own, so to speak. He’s come back with personalized challenges that will serve to motivate him, just knowing about other young people’s lives in this part of the world.

wing to make sure Rafe felt secure and welcome during his stay. Sam’s family did likewise, even with breakfast in bed, when Rafe and Sam visited during the weekends since the school they attended is a boarding school with about 2,000 students, complete with a museum on top. His host mom would give him apples to put in his backpack. At the school where they spent a majority of their time, “we made pottery, learned dancing – ancient Chinese dancing, played games in geography and even tried to brake a brick.” The classes later in the day were typically light and included “cool Chinese games” that also reminded Rafe of the magic acts from a welcoming party hosted for them when they first arrived. Rafe’s pottery, a teapot, by the way, went into the school’s museum.

Rafe has brought back the faces and experiences of the school, Clements’ sister school, and he seems to carry them in his heart.

“We were treated like celebrities,” he said. “The students there were in classes all day from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m,” almost constantly studying.

After the 10 p.m. bell rang, “a swarm of kids would be around us wanting to take pictures and talk to us.” This even happened during site visits in the community, people wanted to be in and take pictures of the student visitors. Rafe said he was given many presents to bring back by so many students, even chinaware from his host family during a farewell party at the school, where they were presented with a yearbook as a memento. “My host family cried when we left,” he shares melancholically.

said Rafe. “Ken,” Sam’s dad, who Rafe said asked to be called by that name, owns a ceramic tile company, and “he took a lot of pride in his work.” The family’s home in the high rise, “like an apartment was really nice, modern,” with “a few things that were different.” There was a comfortable TV room, a computer room, a meditation area, a dining room and kitchen, “my room, which was Sam’s sister’s but she was away in college,” and Sam’s room, “just like here,” with central air conditioning and heating.

Rafe said the temperatures in Foshan were similar to the ones back home, “a little warmer when we first arrived, but it got cooler.”

Of the school experiences, Rafe said he “was the only Clements High School student on the trip,” and became the headmaster’s favorite student visitor. “He didn’t speak English very well, but he had translator,” probably the English teacher from school, which referred to its grade classifications as 1, 2, and 3, he said.

WiFi, he shares, would only be available on a limited basis each day for 20 minutes, when mostly all the kids would scurry to get on the Internet.

All the students wore uniforms, also given to the FBISD students, which Rafe said they would hand wash in a bucket with detergent since there were no washing machines at the school. They would be hung up on a railing to dry. He also recalls the availability of forks for them as visitors, if needed.

Rafe said he’s come back with closer relationships with will fellow students from the other FBISD schools. In fact, they just returned from a trip to Austin in conjunction with the Leadership 101 Program. George Ranch High School and LCISD students went to another high school for their learning experiences while in Foshan, said Rafe.

One may think the student two week visit to Foshan was brief. But for Rafe, it’s Sam, Vian, Valentine, Summer, Gaii and Rosetta that are readily remembered for what has made for lasting memories…the bright smiles and amazing personalities of what may turn out to be lifelong friends. Indeed the visit was brief, but valuable, and it will have probably given the students an opportunity to find their place in the context of challenging global realities. It was a place that Rafe said he saw no bullies or bad kids and that’s had an impact on him. He’s also brought back an appreciation for FBISD for its diversity and for the opportunities here for individualism and “the freedom to choose.”

Having been in China “makes me want to work hard, I want to do well and push myself,” he said.

Rafe, who lives in Sugar Land, has a brother, Alexandre, who also attends Clements. He is the son of David Chaumette and Jacque Baly.

Sugar Land Skeeters Kickball classic raises $24,000 Fundraiser Benefits local disadvantaged youth

he recent Sugar Land Skeeters Kickball Classic raised more than $24,000 this year, more than double last year’s

amount.

Sixteen teams participated in the annual tournament, which benefits local disadvantaged youth through the Sugar Land Skeeters Foundation.

“We are so excited with the success of this year’s event,” said Skeeters General Manager Chris Jones. “Many thanks to the volunteers, sponsors and companies supporting the event. There will be a lot of happy children in the area thanks to this amazing effort.”

Justin FLINT Justin Flint started his own law firm with two other attorneys straight out of law school in 2012, offering a flexible lifestyle to allow them to work from home since at the time his wife Justin Flint was expecting to receive a kidney transplant and was unable to continue her teaching job. The law firm that came to be is Pursley, McNamara & Flint, PLLC, which now operates out of Sugar Land Town Square, as well as home offices for the attorneys.

Faith is very important to Flint. He is active in his church and has been the Vice Chairman of Christ United Methodist Church (Sugar Land) Executive Council since early 2014, having started his leadership role in the Young Adult ministry in 2012.

In addition to his professional and church activities, Flint currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Fort Bend Cares, remaining active on the Grants Committee. He also volunteers with Fort Bend Lawyers Care and is a member of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce.

Flint lives in Sugar Land with his wife Kate, and they are currently hosting an exchange student from Denmark. In his free time, he likes to read, write, hike and camp.

Dustin FESSLER Dustin Fessler is a graduate of the Fort Bend Leadership Forum class of 2014 and continues to be actively involved with the Chamber of Commerce.

Dustin also serves as the Dustin Fessler youngest member of the Board of Directors for the Fort Bend Education Foundation, including serving on the Foundation’s allocations and marketing committee, which enhances the education of FBISD student through its grant programs.

In addition to his active involvement in the Fort Bend community, Dustin is an Associate at one of Fort Bend’s largest law firms, Roberts Markel Weinberg Butler Hailey PC. He leads RMWBH’s Fort Bend litigation docket and counsels his clients on ways to avoid the courtroom, as well as navigating the court system once litigation has begun.

Dustin is licensed to practice law in Texas, New York, and New Jersey. It is for the above reasons, and many more, that I would like to nominate Dustin to be one of Fort Bend’s Rising Stars.

Martin LAW Martin C. Law is an associate in the litigation section of Patout & Shaw, PLLC. His primary practice areas are commercial law, real estate litigation and development, construction Martin Law law, and consumer transactions. While in law school, Mr. Law was awarded the Lawrence C. Hoff Jr. Memorial Scholarship and the Dean’s Scholar Award. Paul WIERBICKI Paul Wierzbicki is commonly known as the “Tree Guy.” Wierzbicki has been the Urban Forester for the City of Missouri City since 2008, also taking on the role of Horticulturist in Paul Wierzbicki 2013.

Although Wierzbicki spends much of his time planting, he also spends much of it planning Missouri City’s beautification efforts. He has created and implemented several award-winning initiatives and programs including the Edible Arbor Trail, Right Tree Right Trail, Three for Trees, Tree Challenge and Memorial Tree program (bringing a technology twist to this classic program).

A previous board member of the Houston Area Urban Forestry Council, he earned the Urban Forester of the Year Award in 2012.

This is on top of several HGAC, Texas Recreation & Parks Society and Keep Texas Beautiful awards that he has been a part of.

Wierzbicki is also co-founder of Missouri City Green, the City’s Keep Texas Beautiful affiliate. When he’s not greening Missouri City, Wierzbicki is a Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. He lives in Missouri City with his wife, Angie, and their dog, Otis. In his free time, he takes on additional studies, such as small engine repair, and spends as much time outdoors as possible.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital unveils new TrueBeam linear accelerator for state-of-the-art cancer treatment

H

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has installed a new radiation therapy system, which integrates imaging, beam delivery and motion management to give physicians unmatched control of radiation therapy.

“This is a major step forward in cancer treatment,” says Clive Shkedy, M.D., Medical Director of Radiation Oncology services at Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land. “The new system allows us to limit side effects and reduce the impact on surrounding tissue while improving the delivery of radiation. It actually gives us a 4-D image as we work – a three-dimensional view of the tumor along with any movement – so that we can deliver radiation doses to a precise spot at the most opportune moment.”

The system called TrueBeam, developed

by Varian Medical Systems, is ideal for treating tumors of the lung, abdomen, breast, prostate, head and neck.

One of the major advances of the new system is its GPS-like system for prostate cancer treatment, in which tiny markers are implanted in the patient for precise, real-time tracking of the tumor. “This is especially beneficial because the prostate can move

slightly throughout a treatment session due to a full bladder or abdominal gas,” said Dr. Shkedy. “Now, we are able to adjust the delivery of radiation in real time to ensure that we are hitting the tumor even if there is slight movement during treatment.”

With this new technology, clinicians can correlate the tumor position in breast cancer patients in relation to the patient’s respiratory cycle.

Using an infrared tracking camera, the system measures the patient’s respiratory pattern and range of motion. This allows the clinician to set gating thresholds that turn the radiation beam on and off automatically for maximum benefit.

“As the patient inhales, the heart and lungs move toward the breast and during exhalation, they move away,” said Dr. Shkedy. “The gating mechanism in the TrueBeam system allows us to rapidly deliver radiation doses when the patient’s heart and lungs are furthest from the tumor, limiting the amount of radiation those critical organs receive.”

The gating system can also be used with other forms of cancer, such as lung cancer, and will be used in stereotactic body radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery, said Dr. Shkedy.

treatment sessions – just a few minutes a day in most cases – and a more comfortable patient experience. For example, the system is quieter than traditional linear accelerators and there are enhanced communication capabilities that enable the patient to remain in constant contact with the operating therapist.

The Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land is set up to conduct clinical trials using the new TrueBeam system, and can electronically transfer data to trial organizers.

“Our successful approach relies on our collaborative approach with patients,” says Dr. Shkedy. “The TrueBeam system gives our team another powerful tool that we can use to plan and deliver the best possible care.”

R

ichard L. “Dick” Tate was at Liddell Sapp, LLP, a big law firm in Houston, when he decided to start his own practice in what was the sleepy Fort Bend County town of Richmond in 1985. He wanted to live in the country and enjoy his family’s horses, while practicing law in the community. The rise of Tate’s practice over the past 30 years has mirrored the exponential growth of Fort Bend County.

In response to that growth, Tate Moerer & King was formed in 2005. Tate’s classmate from University of Houston Law School, Carl H. Moerer Jr., joined the firm as a partner, bringing his experience as associate general counsel to a Fortune 500 company and a named partner in a Houston law firm. Also joining the firm was Richmond native Libby King, a graduate of Lamar Consolidated High School and Baylor Law School, who, prior to joining the firm, was an associate attorney at Strasburger & Price in Dallas.

Tate and Moerer are also certified mediators, and the firm frequently serves as local counsel to other firms outside of Fort Bend County. In other words, with the exception of criminal law, Tate Moerer & King is a full service law firm.

Working alongside the three partners, the firm has four associate attorneys. Kristin Reis, the firm’s Senior Associate, graduated from University of Utah and Baylor Law School. Reis currently serves on the Texas Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee as a Subcommittee Chairperson for District 5D. Fort Bend native Sarah Vida is a graduate of Dulles High School, The University of Texas, and Baylor Law School.

Brittany Wray is a graduate of University of Houston and also graduated from Baylor Law School with a concentration in estate planning. Casson Wen, Fort Bend native and son of Allison Wen, graduated from Emory University School of Law with a concentration in transactional law. Wen currently serves as President of the Fort Bend Young Lawyers Association and is a member of this year’s Fort Bend Chamber Leadership Class.

There’s a reason why most of the attorneys at the firm are from Baylor Law School.

King has been recruiting lawyers from her alma mater since she joined Tate as an associate in 2003.

Crucial to the success of the firm is their team of legal assistants and other support staff who assist in everything from managing document-intensive cases to overseeing the day-to-day operations and logistics of the firm.

The firm has an excellent record and has had recent success in the following areas: breach of contract claims; commercial real estate matters; contested probate litigation; child custody disputes; contested guardianship litigation; and challenges to personal jurisdiction.

In the area of personal jurisdiction, the firm has recently represented corporations who were sued as part of divorce proceedings. In one case, the trial court overruled the corporation’s objection to being sued in Texas. However, the court of appeals held the corporation did not have enough contact in Texas, and the trial court then dismissed the corporation from the lawsuit.

In a similar case, the trial court granted the company’s objection to personal jurisdiction and dismissed it from the suit. In both cases, one spouse had an ownership interest in the out-of-state entity.

In a recent guardianship matter, the firm represented a local guardianship organization who was sued by a group home owner when the organization decided to move eleven of its wards to other group homes due to health and safety concerns. The group home owner filed multiple lawsuits and sought injunctions to stop the organization from moving the wards. The firm successfully defended the organization, and the eleven wards were moved shortly thereafter.

In the area of contract disputes, the firm recently represented a custom home builder who was sued by a homeowner for breach of contract, alleging flaws in construction.

The home builder counterclaimed against the homeowner for breach of contract and defamation. The jury found for the builder on all counts, awarded damages to the builder, but did not award damages to the homeowner.

In its transactional practice, headed by Moerer, the firm recently represented a client in the sale of a car dealership and represented another client in a major refinance of its debt obligations. The firm has also represented multiple clients in the sale and purchase of business interests and has handled countless real estate transactions, representing both buyers and sellers. For more than 10 years, Moerer taught a real estate course as an Adjunct Professor at South Texas College of Law.

In addition to providing excellent legal services, the attorneys at Tate Moerer & King understand the importance of giving back to the community. Tate has served as the chairman of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation since 1997, and he was honored with the National Legal Aid and Defender Association’s Arthur von Briesen Award in 2012. Moerer serves on the Advisory Board of the Honors College at the University of Houston and was voted into the Hall of Fame of the Houston Marathon in 2014 for his service.

Wray received the Texas Access to Justice Commission’s Pro Bono Award while she was a Baylor Law student, and she is currently involved with the Fort Bend Junior Service League. Reis is a mentor with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

When asked about the future of the firm, Wen, who joined the firm in 2013, said, “We are building toward the future. Our county has seen tremendous growth over the years. It’s a new age and market.”

Fort Bend County Health & Human Services announces new Director of Emergency Medical Service Fort Bend County Health & Human Services is pleased to announce that Victor “Graig” Temple has accepted the position as Director of Fort Bend County Emergency Medical Service, effective April 6, 2015.

Mr. Temple comes to Fort Bend County with 24 years of experience in the fire service field and 20 years of paramedic experience. He has held positions as EMS Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Clinical Instructor, Field Training Officer, and EMS Instructor.

His last assignment was Assistant Fire Chief of Operations with the Anchorage Fire Department in Anchorage, Alaska where he supervised nine Battalion Chiefs with 13 stations and 14 engine companies, 5 ladder companies, 5 tenders and 9 MICUs. He also supervised special operations response teams such as Dive, Front Country, USAR, Swift Water and Wildland firefighting.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science and a Master of Science degree in Emergency Services Management.

Mr. Temple is experienced in Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance programs within both Fire and EMS services and also in working within and between the various community agencies to ensure effective partnerships and operations.

Temple stated, “I look forward to working with Fort Bend County EMS. Together we face the challenges of finding creative ways to ensure patients obtain the care they need, the use of 9-1-1 services for non-emergencies and the ever-increasing call volumes. Brenda Essenburg named new FBISD Director, Enterprise Funds Brenda Essenburg was named as the Director, Enterprise Funds for Fort Bend ISD at the March 30 Regular Board Meeting. Most recently, Essenburg served as the Finance Director for Copperas Cove ISD. Prior to that role, she was the Director of General Services for the City of Killeen.

As the Director of Enterprise Funds, Essenburg will work to maximize the revenue potential of FBISD activities and operations in order to increase resources that can be deployed at the campuses. This includes areas such as facility rentals, advertising, fundraising and leasing.

Essenburg received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Tarleton State University.

Sugar Land Rotary donates $30,000 to support Literacy Program at Ridgemont Early Childhood Center The Sugar Land Rotary donated $30,000 to the Literacy Council of Fort Bend to fund a GED project at Fort Bend ISD’s Ridgemont Early Childhood Center. The donation will help fund the project for the next five years. Executive Director Kelli Metzenthin and Outreach and Program Coordinator Tammie Rankin accepted the donation on behalf of the Literacy Council.

“The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County is proud to partner with FBISD, Head Start and the Sugar Land Rotary to provide services to students in the Ridgemont area that want to improve the quality of life for their families and their community,” said Metzenthin.

The Literacy Council has been in partnership with FBISD for the past three years.

The organization began providing GED preparation classes at Ridgemont in September 2014. Currently, 15 adults take part in the evening classes that focus on the math, English Language Arts and civics portions of the test.

The Sugar Land Rotary donation will fund five years of teacher compensation (at $5,000 per year) and scholarship awards ($1,000 per year for five years). The Literacy Council presents an annual $1,000 scholarship to a student who received the GED tutoring and obtained his/her GED. The scholarship assists the recipient with tuition costs at a college, junior college or vocational school.

YMCA Golf Classic a big success for area youth and families On March 23rd, the YMCAs of Fort Bend County, which includes the Fort Bend, Katy and TW Davis YMCAs, held its 9th Annual Spring Golf Classic and Auction, sponsored by Fort Bend Toyota and Sterling McCall Lexus. Over 120 golfers participated in the event held at Pecan Grove Country Club in Richmond, which netted the YMCA a record breaking $58,500 for its local Annual Support Campaign.

Immediately following the tournament, a dinner and auction was held at the country club. The auction, led by guest auctioneer Commissioner James Patterson, raised over $7,000 for the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign. The high bidder of the night was Andy Sanford of RBC Wealth Management for his winning bid on the “I Love Houston Sports” Package. “We continue to be blessed by the generosity of the Fort Bend community in support of our efforts to make sure that the Y is available to all,” stated Bill Myers, YMCA Golf Committee Chair.

Also recognized at the dinner event were the teams with the best low gross scores in two different flights of the tournament. The first

place team in flight one and the low score of the tournament went to the team of Jerry Dockum, Steve Hansen, Boonreing Intathong and RB Brinlee. The first place team in the second flight category went to the team of Jamie Scaffidi, Laura Brinkley, Rick Byrd and Greg Houghtaling. Other winners included the longest drive competition champions, Lee Ann Stubenrouch and Ricky Paredes. The closest to the pin winners were Melanie Ellis and Nick Landoski. The straightest drive contest was won by Ron Dominguez and the preevent putting contest was won by Jennifer Ramsey.

The YMCA is a 501 C 3 Non-Profit organization dedicated to strengthening the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The 7th annual Grant-A-Starr Foundation Family Fun Run & Walk The 7th Annual Grant-A-Starr Foundation Family Fun Run & Walk was a huge success.

Over 600 participants from Sugar Land and the greater Fort Bend area came together on a sunny morning to raise support for Grant-A-Starr Foundation. 100% of the funds raised support projects dedicated to the development of rapid diagnostic testing, in memory of Grant Starr, a little boy that lost his life from an elusive virus.

Checks each in the amount $25,000 were presented to both Texas Children’s Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

A unique component of the fun run is that it is managed and operated by a Teen Board comprised of Fort Bend area high school students. FBISD Superintendent Dr. Charles Dupre and Sugar Land City Councilmam Joe Zimmerman were in attendance to support the efforts of the Foundation and the Teen Board.

Quail Valley Middle School (QVMS) support Avon 39 Quail Valley Middle School (QVMS) students, staff, parents and community members raised $2,500 to support Avon 39, the walk to cure cancer, during a fundraising event held on campus. Students who raised at least $25 for the cause were invited to attend the event that included board games, music and line dancing, basketball tournaments, volleyball games, a movie room, food, and door prizes.

Darren Woodard, NFL Defensive Back for the Arizona Cardinals and son of QVMS staff member Andra Woodard, served as the keynote speaker. He shared details of his education and professional football career, reminding students of the importance of remaining in school. “Anything you want to achieve in life is possible if you keep education at the forefront,” said Woodard.

Health teacher and event organizer Regina Crafter, who is also the reigning Ms. Texas America, thanked guests for attending and supporting the event. “No matter what

amount you contributed, you supported a worthy cause and thought of someone other than yourselves,” she said. “For that you should be commended.”
