Go red in February

For women’s heart disease, stroke prevention By Kayla Robins

February is for love and all things red. The American Heart Association loves the color red, and shows it by holding a massive national public awareness day on Feb. 5, a Friday, to bring attention to the leading killers of women — heart disease and stroke. The 13th Annual National Wear Red Day urges all women, from businesses, schools, the media, buildings and landmarks to “go red” and “glow red” and show commitment to reducing risk, improving health and saving women’s lives. One in three women dies of heart disease and stroke every year. Yet it’s 80 percent preventable, according to the American Heart Association.

Why red? Easy. Ask a stylist, job coach or dating expert. Red stands out. Eyes are drawn to it. Not to mention it’s the color of our hearts and the symbol for love. You don’t just have to wear red. Paint something in the community red. Share pictures of your red day and use the hashtag #GoRedSelfie through Feb. 28. Who wouldn’t love to see a dog dressed in red? You can also start your own National Wear Red Day Fundraiser to show your support for friends, family and women in your community. For more information, visit goredforwomen.org.
