North senior faced ‘worries’ and ‘a lot of opportunities’ during COVID-19 response By Kelly Whitmire

After four years on the drumline in North Forsyth High School’s Raider Band, including being drum captain his senior year, graduating senior Dylan Head those football Friday nights were among his favorite high school memories. “Being in the drumline and playing in the student section and everything, having your peers watch you play drums and everyone’s cheering for you and stuff, just the energy of North and the pride we all have for our school, it was just a good community and I’m glad I’m part of it. Along with being drum captain and preforming in North’s indoor drumline, marching band and concert band, in his junior and senior year, Head also served as a Raider Commander, which he said was “a leadership position that helps out the underclassmen, helps out admin, just overall student leadership,” Like all seniors, Head was impacted by schools closing due to COVID-19, which he said didn’t really hit him until the state’s shelter-in-place order went into effect. “That’s when I started to realize all the things I was doing with my friends and how like hanging out and trying to do school work and trying to get things accomplished with people and being able to see everybody before we all go off
to college and go our separate way,” he said. “That was kind of one of my worries about things, losing that time with friends and my peers, some teachers and everything, making those memories and doing all the fun senior activities and prom and all that stuff.” Head said he feels like his experience was common but despite the tough situation said there were some personal silver linings. “On the flip side of that, it’s opened a lot of opportunities for me, like I got to spend time with my family, people I normally don’t hand out with in my family, like some of my cousins we’ve been talking more. It’s given me time to work on myself and figure out the path that I want to take in life, and it’s given me time to reflect upon how good we have it and what we take for granted.” With more time to think about his future, Head said he used the time to figure out his post-high school plans. “Originally, I was planning on going to Kennesaw,” Head said, “then I realized college was something I would want to wait for, so I’m joining the United States Coast Guard to become a rescue swimmer. That’s my plan right now. I want to be a firefighter/EMT, like my dad, so I’m going to join the Coast Guard and go that route.”
