Publisher Perspective MARCH 2025

Spring has always been my favorite season—it’s a time of renewal, fresh starts, and longer days filled with sunshine. I can hardly wait to get back to my outdoor morning walks and talks with my baby girl. We started this tradition last year— combining exercise with a morning meeting— and it’s become one of the highlights of my day. I’m also looking forward to spending time in the yard with my hubby; there’s no place he’d rather be than working outdoors. There’s just something about fresh air and a little hard work that makes everything feel brighter.

At the top of my list this season are two of my favorite events. First up, the 4th annual Woman on the Move Conference in Winston-Salem—a day filled with inspiration, learning, and connection. To learn more or sign up, visit tinyurl.com/FWWOMC25. Then, mark your calendars for the 3rd annual Boutique Crawl in Lake Norman! It’s a full day of shopping, giveaways, friends, and fun. Sign up at tinyurl.com/lknbc25—you won’t want to miss it!

This month, we are thrilled to welcome Lakeside Pointe to our advertising family. This beautiful community in Sherrills Ford is a mustsee—check out their story on page 20. Our cover story features WHIP Radio, an iconic part of the community. Turn to page 28 to learn how you can tune in from anywhere!

We’re also excited to introduce Zen Psychiatric, now open in Mooresville, offering an alternative treatment for those struggling with treatment-

Neptune Society Charlotte THE CARING CHOICE FOR CREMATION SERVICES

As the nation’s oldest and largest cremation source, Neptune Society has proudly served more than one million families at some of their toughest times. Providing nationwide coverage and the most comprehensive, yet flexible, cremation plan in the industry, their service guarantee is unmatched.

While Neptune Society has been serving North Carolina for decades, the local Charlotte office was established in 2015.

“In the past 20 years, cremation rates have more than doubled in the United States, leading to a better understanding of the process and options for cremation of loved ones,” explains Location Manager and Licensed Funeral Director Elijah Walker. “The concept of planning ahead is not a new one, but there has been a natural rise in pre-planning for cremation since it’s now the preferred method of disposition.”

Dedicated to reducing the stress on families that comes with carrying out the final wishes of loved ones, Neptune Society strives to offer affordable plans, carried out with dignity and compassion. Choosing cremation also shows you are committed to a clean, natural environment that preserves the planet’s resources.

The popularity and acceptance of cremation services is likely to continue increasing due to the difference in costs between a traditional burial and funeral, versus affordable cremation plans. The total cost of a burial is about six to eight times that of a Neptune Society cremation plan. Prepaid services allow you to lock in the current price and avoid increased cremation costs in the future. Prepaying also eliminates the financial turmoil the unexpected passing of a loved one can create.

At time of death, Neptune Society immediately sends professionally trained personnel to transport the deceased to a climate-controlled

holding facility, and immediate family can view the deceased prior to cremation.

Prospective clients typically have many questions – and these are some of the most frequent:

1. Can I make payments on my plan? Yes, by paying ahead of need, you are able to lock in current prices and make affordable monthly payments.

2. What happens if I have a plan with you and then move? As a member of Neptune Society, you have the right to relocate anywhere in the United States or Canada, and your plan goes along with you. We will honor the plan that you have already made. To be certain your funds are secure, they are held in a trust account or placed in a specialized form of life insurance.

3. What happens if I plan with you and pass away while traveling? With our Away from Home Protection, you are protected even while traveling or away from home.

4. Can the ashes of my loved one be separated for family members? Yes, as long as there are separate cremation urns or containers to hold the ashes.

Neptune Society also offers special services for veterans, including collecting discharge papers at the time of planning so they are immediately available to the family and funeral director at the time of passing. Neptune obtains a flag for veterans and assists in interment at a national cemetery – with military honor guard included. As a special thank you to our veterans, they also include, at no cost to the family, a beautiful cherry wood and glass enclosed display case for the flag.

“Our military veterans are very dear to us, and we are honored to be endorsed by the VFW and American Legion,” adds Elijah.

If you’re looking to gather more information on the process and how Neptune Society Charlotte provides invaluable help to families

when they need it most, Lunch-and-Learns take place in different cities each month.

“We are regularly in Cornelius, Mooresville, Huntersville, Statesville and Denver,” shares Elijah. “Options are always available on our website, or call our local office for upcoming events. You may even receive an invitation in the mail. We provide a free lunch from a local restaurant, but most importantly, we discuss the many benefits of pre-planning your cremation, the credentials of Neptune Society and how our program works to help the ones you love in a most difficult time.”

Neptune Society Charlotte is located at 7340 Smith Corners Boulevard, #200, Charlotte, NC, 704.755.5819. Visit neptunesociety.com for additional information.

“We highly recommend Neptune Society. Elijah Walker and his team were so kind, caring and communicative throughout the process. It was a recommendation from another family member based on their experience with Mr. Walker a few years back, and I want to pass our recommendation on – you and your family will be in very good hands.” - KELLY P.

“Elijah Walker and his crew were the most amazing people I dealt with in my mother’s passing. Elijah, you touched my heart in this cruel process of grief.” - AMANDA M.

Zen Psychiatric Services

A NEW LOOK FOR DEPRESSION TREATMENT

When you enter Zen Psychiatric Services in Mooresville, the name speaks for itself – a tranquil, calm, approachable atmosphere with a well trained, nurturing staff of professionals.

There has long been a need for additional effective options for treatment resistant depression (TRD) for the millions of individuals in the United States who struggle on a daily basis.

Founder Anthony Frasca, MD, MSPH, who received his medical degree and master of science in Public Health from the University of South Carolina, then trained in psychiatry at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, shares the mission for this newest location in Mooresville – joining Zen Psychiatric practices in Asheville and Morganton, NC.

“I started this practice to help, in some small way, to usher in a new era of depression treatment,” Dr. Frasca shares. “We offer a compassionate, patient-centered approach to mental health with Spravato® intranasal and intramuscular ketamine treatment.”

When the team began looking towards expansion and a third location, Marketing Development Representative Kimberly Lewis found the perfect spot in an already established medical park in Mooresville. The practice is a convenient, easy drive for residents around the Lake Norman area, and a nice contrast to Zen’s other practice locations.

Heading up the Mooresville team of Zen Psychiatric Services is Dr. Brian Lewis, who graduated from medical school at the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 2001 and completed a residency in psychiatry at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Since 2016, Dr. Lewis has also been affiliated with Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

After 20 years being involved in clinical care, Dr. Lewis wanted to explore different options that were still consistent with accepted psychiatric care while being nontraditional in nature.

“I have always felt I’m at my best when I’m trying to help people,” he shares. “We are honored to be part of the Lake Norman community and want to provide a safe and caring environment for our patients. We are here to help!”

Dr. Lewis will be joined at the Mooresville practice by two nurses and nurse practitioner Rodney Wike. As is important for the overall Spravato® experience, a full twohour monitoring period follows every dosage, and the Zen staff has been carefully selected for their psychiatric training and a love for impeccable patient care in mind.

If you are interested in pursuing a course of Spravato® for treatment resistant depression (also known as refractory or regenerative depression), simply call the Zen Psychiatric Services main number at 828.608.0892. Through that initial phone call, one of their professionals will determine if

you are a good fit for the treatment and will schedule an in-person consultation. You’ll provide contact information for your primary care physician, where Dr. Lewis will then obtain the details of your current treatments and have your doctor provide an official referral.

Dr. Frasca shares that, among the three practices, the staff has treated patients up to 84 years of age – but emphasizes that Spravato® is not appropriate for anyone under the age of 18. While the intranasal ketamine treatments gained recognition in 2022 and 2023 as people began to see a true difference in family members who have suffered with depression, it’s important

to keep in mind that any treatment is never “one size fits all” – and side effects and signs of dependency are closely monitored in the office by trained staff.

The new Zen Psychiatric Services practice is located at 137 Professional Park Drive, Suite D, Mooresville, NC, 828.608.0892. You can inquire about referrals or receive more information on treatment at zenpsychiatric.com, or email mooresville@zenpsychiatric.com. Follow them on Instagram @zenpsychiatric. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Lakeside Pointe, Beechwood Carolinas

Modern Style Meets Lakefront Leisure

For those with discerning taste and an eye on waterfront living with lifestyleoriented amenities, welcome to Lakeside Pointe in Catawba County.

As Beechwood Carolinas’ flagship lifestyle community in North Carolina, this beautiful 215-home community features both townhomes and single family homes designed with everyone from retirees to young couples in mind. The picturesque Lake Norman landscape was a natural backdrop for this luxury community that speaks to a range of lifestyles and daily comforts.

“Our vision is to tailor our signature quality of home styles with local lifestyles,” explains Steven Dubb, principal and president of The Beechwood Organization. “We’ve partnered with local experts in the land planning and design space to ensure everything about Lakeside Pointe meets the desires and needs of those who want to live here. Our appreciation for the people and landscapes of the Carolinas continues to grow. What we’re creating here at Lakeside Pointe will enable future generations to enjoy living, working and playing in what is one of the finest settings on Lake Norman.”

Beechwood Carolinas, the developer behind Lakeside Pointe, is a division of New Yorkheadquartered The Beechwood Organization – one of the largest privately owned developers of single family homes, multi-family homes and luxury lifestyle communities on the east coast.

Lakeside Pointe celebrated its first home closing in January of 2025 and held its Model Grand Opening in February, showcasing several inviting home options. Guests toured move-in ready homes for a first glimpse of Lakeside Pointe living – and if you’re looking to be in a new home at the lake by summertime, these homes are available for purchase.

Fully set for an active lifestyle, The Beacon Club – Lakeside Pointe’s clubhouse – is set for its grand opening in the spring of 2025, and all of Lakeside Pointe’s amenities are designed to foster recreation and relaxation. With marinas on either side, the community features private boat slips, a dog park, walking trails, kayak launch and 26 acres of preserved open space. The 5,000-squarefoot clubhouse will also include indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a lake-facing fitness room, multiple terraces, an expansive pool, a gazebo and access to docks.

Lakeside Pointe’s location affords residents closeness to natural beauty that includes views of local Little Mountain and proximity to the popular 606-acre Mountain Creek Park. Adding to the community’s appeal, residents are able to access all the urban amenities of Charlotte, NC – including the airport, shopping and expanded employment opportunities.

Designed in harmony with their surroundings, the homes at Lakeside Pointe also offer a nod to the design aspects of modern living – envision an open concept with spacious living areas, soaring ceilings, large chef’s kitchens and optional fireplaces paired with cozy nooks offering privacy for an office or simply a spot for quiet moments.

With 11 customizable home models –including 12 exterior home palates and three different elevation levels – residences range from 2,100 to 5,800 square feet. Models feature from two to six bedrooms but can be personalized to include additional or fewer bedrooms, bathrooms and storage options as needed. Residents will find a range of styles and designer finish selections

that blend seamlessly with their personal style, and each home is designed with lakeside living in mind. Envision oversized windows that allow you to maximize light source and soak in those relaxing views that surround the property.

Beechwood partnered with Shook Kelley, a Charlotte-based planning and architectural design firm, on the master plan for Lakeside Pointe, with custom interiors by the Beechwood Design Studio that ensure the inclusion of innovative design, ecofriendliness and smart home features.

Future development for the Lakeside Pointe area will also include 68,000-squarefeet of pedestrian-friendly retail and commercial spaces.

“There are few waterfront opportunities remaining on Lake Norman, and with events over recent years, people are looking for their own private sanctuary at home, where they can enjoy the outdoors and celebrate nature with family and friends. We are excited to be delivering our first homes at this beautiful property with incredible natural features. We also expect others to soon discover how truly special lakeside living will be for them at Lakeside Pointe,” says Robert Kardos, regional president of Beechwood Carolinas.

Marzano Capital Group We All Have Money Blind Spots

Blind spots, in the realm of investing, can be likened to the unnoticed smudges on a pair of glasses. They obscure a clear view of reality, but can easily go unnoticed. In the world of finance, this can have costly implications.

Imagine Sarah, an IT executive. She’s tech-savvy and feels very confident investing in the tech sector. She sees the potential in every new startup, understands the nuances of emerging technologies, and believes fervently in a techdominated future. Because of this, Sarah’s portfolio is overly weighted in tech stocks. While she might understand the industry, she may have placed herself at risk if there’s a downturn in the tech sector. Sarah’s blind spot is an over-reliance on what she knows and loves.

Similarly, James, a loyal, long-term employee of a publicly traded company, may hold a significant portion of his investments in his company’s stock. It might seem like a good strategy, given that he believes in the company’s mission and its potential. Yet, objectively, he may be exposed to high risk if that one company faces a headwind. His blind spot is the deep-seated belief that his company stock is the right choice when diversification likely makes more sense.

Ava, a dedicated environmentalist, heavily invests in green companies. Her passion for sustainability guides her choices. However, her portfolio may be at risk due to its lack of diversification. While she believes in the

potential of green energy, the industry is prone to market fluctuations and technological shifts. Ava’s blind spot is her emotional attachment to the cause, potentially overshadowing a wellrounded investment strategy.

Managing these blind spots can be challenging, but here are a few steps you can take:

1. Diversify Your Portfolio: Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Diversification helps to spread risk across different types of investments. Even if you have a strong belief in a particular sector or company, it’s essential to have a mix of assets to cushion against potential downturns.

2. Seek Professional Advice: Just as an athlete might benefit from a coach, investors can gain perspective from financial advisors. These professionals can provide an objective view of your investments, helping you identify areas of risk and suggesting ways to optimize returns.

3. Regularly Review Your Investments: Financial markets and industries evolve. What might have been a good investment a few years ago might not be the case today. Regularly reviewing and adjusting your portfolio ensures it aligns with your current financial goals and market conditions.

4. Separate Emotions from Investing: It’s natural to have emotional attachments, like Ava’s passion for sustainability. However, investment decisions should

be based on sound financial principles and not solely on emotions. It’s essential to strike a balance between personal beliefs and financial prudence.

5. Educate Yourself: Continuously educate yourself about the financial markets, emerging trends, and investment strategies. The more informed you are, the better equipped you’ll be to recognize and address any blind spots in your investment approach.

Keep in mind that emotional resistance often comes when confronting our blind spots. Just like someone might be surprised to find out they’ve been running “incorrectly” all their life, an investor might feel a sting of pride when it’s pointed out that their stock picks aren’t as savvy as they thought.

In reality, everyone has blind spots, not just in investing but in various facets of life. They shape our choices, often without our realization. By acknowledging their existence, seeking external guidance, and being open to feedback, we can navigate the treacherous waters of the investment world with a clearer vision. After all, the goal is not just to invest but to do so wisely and efficiently.

BE A LEARNING BIRD: DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET

As with many couples who have been together for a long time, we have evolved a “language” that is all ours. Case in point: One of us manages to unravel a perplexing technical conundrum, and the other applauds in appreciation for that demonstration of “learning bird” behavior. I confess that there are many times when I’d rather not learn my way through an exasperating technical or mechanical challenge. It’s easier to fire off a quick text to a 30-something or reach out to a neighbor who thrives on such a challenge. And yet, every time I take the road marked “Easy!” I am aware that I miss out on an opportunity to learn an immediately beneficial skill.

Researchers have long referred to this willingness to learn as a “growth mindset,” one that encourages us to see a challenge as an opportunity to grow. That’s what kicked in for me one day when I successfully disassembled the vacuum cleaner to clear a clogged passage. Not being gifted or inclined mechanically, I was darn proud of myself for overcoming the “fixed mindset” that shies away from new learning experiences.

Cultivate Your Growth Mindset

For those of us who have moved on to our post-work chapter, now is not the time to settle for a fixed mindset. Learning new things as we age is key to keeping our cognitive skills sharp, while our renewed sense of accomplishment and fulfillment contribute to our emotional health. When you strengthen your belief in your ability to learn, grow and adapt, you can enjoy this stage in the journey with greater selfconfidence. Here’s how:

Say “Yes” to New Experiences

People too often say, “I don’t know how to do that,” “that’s beyond me” or even “I’m too old for that.” That’s the fixed, stuck mindset talking. Imagine if you had lived your earlier years with a no-can-do attitude. How much would that have held you back from achieving your goals,

respecting yourself and being happy with your life? So, why start now when so much of this post-work chapter is yours to define and embrace? Shift your “no” to an open-minded “yes” when a learning opportunity presents itself.

Set Goals

Everyone has those “the vacuum cleaner is clogged, and I need to figure out how to fix it” moments. But, thankfully, many of our learning opportunities promise greater pleasure – like learning a new skill, trying a new hobby or pursuing a creative adventure. If you’ve embraced any of these, setting goals allows you to track your progress (growth) while providing you with opportunities to celebrate your mini successes along the way.

Balance Positivity with Compassion and a Sense of Humor

Being a learner, at any age, is often humbling. We fumble, stumble, pick ourselves up and give it another try. That process applies to being a learner at every age because it builds resilience and an I can do this attitude. Staying with the learning process requires maintaining a positive frame of mind and treating oneself with compassion – the same you’d extend to a friend who is dipping her toe in the water of a new learning experience. Couple that with a healthy sense of humor by laughing at your stumbles because laughter is its own medicine!

Accept and Adapt to Change Instead of Fighting It

Choosing to learn the basics of a new language, taking a class in a novel subject or signing up for a Tai chi class may be on your list of things you want to learn. But, life presents us with all manner of things we’d rather sidestep or have someone else handle when given a choice. The key here is to notice our fixed perspective and to shift it by reminding ourselves of this indisputable fact – we haven’t made it this far without accepting and adapting at every stage in our journey.

Here’s to you, to your growth mindset. Go for it, learning bird!

1350 WHIP Radio A Milestone of Music & Memories

Celebrating 75 years is a joyous milestone for Mooresville’s 1350 WHIP Radio – much the same way their repertoire of super hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s has commemorated countless special moments in their listeners’ lives!

Station Manager Chris Montgomery feels this amazing landmark is all based on knowing good music.

“I remember my grandparents dialing into the station,” he shares. “I think it was beach music then – oldies – maybe even the same oldies in rotation today! Our owner, Harrill Hamrick, confirms WHIP Radio once aired bluegrass and country – still good music. I mean Johnny Cash and Willie are kind of rock and roll, right?”

A genre that can’t help but bring folks together, those glorious “oldies” can transport you immediately back to your happy place – no matter what decade you relate to! Thrilled to be part of all those memories, the WHIP family loves and supports the community that’s been so much a part of their success.

Chris joined the WHIP team on a part-time basis in 2020, which translated to a full-time gig a year later. Family owned and operated, Owners Harrill and William Hamrick and Deanna Belk couldn’t be more proud that WHIP has been voted Best Local Radio Station in 2022, 2023 and 2024. What is it that sets the radio station apart from others while also strengthening community ties?

“I always tell people we play great music, as in ‘You might out-school me, but you won’t out-cool me’ – and in

between the Stones, Beatles and Bee Gees are messages from your friends and neighbors,” he shares. “We work really hard at getting the word out for our advertisers! Some of them are small businesses, others are churches and maybe an occasional Moose Lodge announcement. It’s hyper-local, unlike other places where you can get music these days.”

Beyond the Music

While the last few years have seen this beloved format maintain its unique popularity – how people find their favorite songs has definitely changed.

“With so many streaming services – YouTube, Spotify, along with podcasts – it’s a trip where you can hear us anywhere in the whole wide world! Since you can listen online, we get streamers e-mailing us from Australia, Germany and Finland – I mean, really?” adds Chris. “Someone, somewhere, is always listening!”

Continued on page 30.

Continued from page 29.

Incorporating podcasts into the WHIP Radio family was a natural progression and includes The Chamber Connection, which highlights businesses that partner with the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce – something Chris says was merely brainstorming at work, in hopes of getting a sponsor. “But, then a crazy thing happened! Many of the businesses who showed up for the podcast became advertisers! Next, my buddy Stuart Madow with Visiting Angels Lake Norman suggested doing Senior Care Connections to keep up with constant changes in senior health care.”

Living Life Accent Prone MAKE A PERSONAL DESIGN STATEMENT WITH TOP TRENDS FOR 2025

As we’re venturing deeper into the new year — and hopefully towards spring! — may we challenge you to think more creatively when it comes to interior design?

And yes, our Accent Prone team will be here to guide you! It’s totally possible to move outside your comfort zone and still stay true to your personal style — and there are just way too many fun trends popping up in 2025 to pass by!

1. Here’s a word you might not have heard as much in the past few years — wallpaper. Muralstyle wallpaper is huge right now, and there are endless choices that make it the ultimate way to add color, pattern, and texture to a room. We think of it as the newest way to make a fun, bold statement!

2. Scallop-shaped edges are also grabbing our attention — accenting furniture, trims, and moldings, and even making an appearance in art collections. Look for this playful touch on mirrors, photo frames, trays, and a variety of table décor.

3. By now you’ve also probably heard the words “Mocha Mousse” — the shade that’s all the rage. As the Pantone color of 2025 — get to know this warm brown color that’s setting the tone for all other paint shades and popular trends. Classic colors are abundant, too, in shades of creams and warmer taupes, as we’re leaning away from all-white houses. Those warmer wood tones are showing up in cabinetry also — and that natural beauty is always a comfortable, inviting choice for the home you love spending time in.

4. Look for wainscoting — wood paneling applied to the lower portion of a wall inside a home, often the dining room — as well as more detailed moldings. Both are staples of traditional design, and some of those amazing extra touches that can make a room unique.

5. Chinoiserie is also back in a big way — and not just in the blue-and-white patterns you may think of when you first hear that word. Think of these unique patterns as the imitation of Chinese techniques and motifs in Western Art, architecture, and furniture. But traditional fabric prints are just as present — and there’s even a renewed interest in gingham plaid. While it

may feel a little nostalgic, gingham is all about timeless appeal and versatility — so it’s also easy to envision in a contemporary setting!

It’s clear no matter what room of the house you’re looking to refresh, there’s plenty of new inspiration out there — let’s think together on how to make these trends work for you!

Until next time, Cheri

THE IMPACT OF SOIL PH ON YOUR LAWN

Soil PH has long been known to impact plant health, whether it be crop production or your home lawn. The questions we are going to answer for you are: Why does it have an impact on plant health and what specifically is PH impacting?

Let’s begin with the basics. PH stands for Potential Hydrogen. This makes sense when you learn the PH of the soil is impacted positively or negatively by the amount of hydrogen (H+) ions it is holding. Some soils are naturally higher in H+ ions (Clay) and some soils are naturally lower in H+ (Sandy loam), which gives them a natural deviation from the neutral PH of 7.

The PH impact of a soil regulates its ability to pass nutrients stored in the soil to the plants growing in it. Not all nutrients are created equal and therefore nutrients flow through the soil at different rates based on the soils PH. When PH moves too far away from a neutral PH, the soil can “lock up” the nutrients (see exhibit 1), therefore starving the plant from critical nutrition. The goal of soil management is to move the soil PH to an appropriate level based on the plants that are growing in it. Plants such as blueberries like acidic soil between 4.5-5; where Daylilies prefer a PH of 8, home lawns prefer 6.0-6.5 PH. These plants grow best at these levels because the nutrient availability in the soil is optimal for them. Blueberries love iron and iron is highly available in 4.0-5.0 PH soils.

Adding calcitic lime to our lawns, gardens and natural areas has several positive impacts, one of which is adjusting the soil PH. Please note that lime does not create a permanent change to the soil PH, only organic amendments such as compost, biochar and increased soil biology can create a permanent change to the soils PH. Lime adds significant amounts of Calcium and Calcium Carbonate to the soil which attracts hydrogen (H+) ions and bonds with them, subsequently removing their impact in the soil and raising soil PH.

Calcium is an essential macro nutrient for plants, but also plays a massive role in soil structure. Calcium ions position themselves between the soil platelets, like cartilage, inhibiting the platelets from collapsing while creating space within the soil for air, water, and nutrient movement. Calcium leaches from our soils through natural processes. When this happens and the calcium level in soil can become deficient and the soil collapses and becomes compacted.

PLANT AVAILABLE NUTRIENTS

In Charlotte, we have heavy clays which hold a lot of nutrients and readily uptake calcium and calcium carbonate into the soil. Providing your soil calcitic lime as part of your regular soil maintenance can greatly increase the nutrient availability within the soil, the soils structure and improve the effectiveness of any fertilizer additives. Lime is a slow-moving application (see exhibit 2) and therefore needs to be planned annually to ensure your soil is optimized for the growing season.

The Hidden Cost of Textile Waste

How Modern Fabrics is Changing the Industry

In a world where convenience often trumps sustainability, the environmental impact of textile waste tends to fly under the radar. Every year, millions of pounds of fabric, much of it from the furniture industry, end up in landfills, adding to pollution and straining waste management systems. But one small business in Huntersville, North Carolina, is flipping the script. Modern Fabrics is reclaiming high-quality, luxury textiles from the cutting room floor and giving them a second life.

Modern Fabrics: A Sustainable Solution

Founded by Ewa and James Powell in 2004, with Debra Worthy, store manager, Modern Fabrics is leading the charge in reducing textile waste while making designer fabrics more accessible. The company rescues surplus materials from big names like Kravet, Schumacher, Knoll, Lee Jofa, and Serena Lily—fabrics that would otherwise be tossed—and offers them to customers at a fraction of the original price. Their mission? To provide an affordable, eco-friendly option for anyone looking to upholster furniture, make one-of-a-kind pillows, and create beautiful spaces without leaving a heavy environmental footprint.

The Environmental Toll of Textile Waste

Textile waste is a massive problem, especially in the furniture world. Big manufacturers order fabric in bulk, but not all of it gets used. In fact, up to 85% of textiles intended for furniture or upholstery never make it to a finished product.

“Unfortunately, leftover fabrics from production or custom orders are rarely recycled,” explains Ewa. “For many manufacturers, it’s not financially feasible to return these fabrics to customers or store them for future use, so they often throw them away. The waste can be staggering.”

Many of these discarded fabrics are synthetic or blended with synthetic fibers, which means they take years, sometimes decades, to break down. And when they sit in landfills, they don’t just take up space; they release harmful chemicals into the ground and air, worsening pollution.

Reclaiming and Reusing High-Quality Materials

Modern Fabrics steps in before these materials reach the landfill. By working closely with manufacturers and upholstery shops, they snag high-end textiles that are brand-new but considered surplus. These fabrics are then sold at steep discounts, often 50-75% off the retail price.

For those wanting sustainable, eco-friendly designs without compromising on quality, Modern Fabrics is a game-changer. Their collection includes tough, commercial-grade textiles from brands like Knoll and Kravet, as well as luxe residential fabrics from Schumacher and Lee Jofa. The result? Access to top-notch designer materials at prices that won’t break the bank.

But it’s more than just a good deal. By giving these fabrics a second life, Modern Fabrics is saving valuable resources and cutting down the need for new, virgin materials. Shoppers become part of a larger movement towards a more sustainable, circular economy in the design world.

The Growing Need for Change

The sheer volume of textile waste in both the furniture and fashion industries is overwhelming. And while companies like Modern Fabrics are making a dent, there’s still a long road ahead. But the good news? The push for sustainability is gaining serious traction. As consumers become more mindful of the environmental impact of their purchases, businesses that focus on reducing waste and adopting eco-friendly practices are seeing a surge in demand.

For Debra, it’s about more than just cutting down waste; it’s about changing the way people think about fabric. “We want to show that sustainable design can be just as beautiful, durable, and luxurious as conventional options,” she says. “By reclaiming these fabrics and offering them at affordable prices, we’re not only reducing waste but making high-quality design accessible to a much broader audience.”

As the world faces the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, companies like Modern Fabrics prove that even small, intentional shifts in how we source and use materials can make a big difference. Their message is clear: what was once considered waste can become a valuable resource. Sustainability and style don’t have to be at odds. The future of design isn’t just about looking good—it’s about doing good. And Modern Fabrics is leading the way.

Art Speak NOELLE VANHENDRICK

This month, we are featuring artist Noelle VanHendrick who, along with her husband, Eric, is the creator of ZPOTS.

How would you describe your work?

Our work at ZPOTS is about reflecting the world we see, feel and live in. It’s also about projecting the world as we wish it to be. The work captures us simply being present…here.

Which other artists inspire you?

Before I share the artists who inspire me, I’d like to share that I am inspired by my children, my husband and the folks that work with me here at ZPOTS. We kid around about having our own private podcast called “Wheel Talk.” We are constantly churning our thoughts and feelings of the world we live in while we make the pottery. Sometimes the conversations go very deep, sometimes they are funny, sometimes very sad, sometimes profane! It reminds me of when I was studying in China and we were visiting a monastery. There, I saw a group of monks who, in rhythmic fashion, posed questions and answers to each other in a very prayerful and playful way. The monks would clap after they were finished asking their question or giving an answer. It was musical. Pottery, too, has a rhythm – especially when you make thousands of similar things, it gets very rhythmic on a soul level. So, as the wheels are turning, the marks are being made, the pots dunking in buckets of slip and glaze, the paintbrushes swooshing – it’s music…and our talks remind me of those of the monks.

As a painter, impressionism brings me to my knees; I clench my heart when I feel the marks, and my mind is released within the movement of color.

As a potter, Hamada.

As a singer, Stevie Nicks.

As a dancer, West African dance.

As a poet, Rumi.

Where else do you find inspiration?

Inside myself. I describe it as a river that is constantly flowing. An idea is like a fish that jumps out of the river. Sometimes I am present enough to catch many; sometimes I am so busy that they are fleeting, and I just can’t get a moment to reel them in. I aspire to expand my time to receive the inspiration and follow through with the work to make them all a reality.

What is the greatest compliment you’ve received about your work?

We get folks telling us how ZPOTS have changed and saved their lives which is both amazing and awesome to hear! We feel so lucky that so many have returned to share their stories of healing and how our pottery was like medicine for them. What we do is hard work, and knowing how helpful our creations are gives us energy to keep going.

What are you working on now that you are excited about?

I do have a new spring bubbling with some alternate channels of work. I’d like to develop something for the masses by taking a deep dive into my paintings and poetry. There is a band (Steep Way) that I sing in and that is just pure fun for me. I’d also like to find more time to dance!

What is some advice you would give a new artist starting out?

I would tell any creatives who seek to make a living off of their art to seek opportunities to learn about marketing and business strategies to support their venture. Hiring a photographer early on to establish a library of images of your work is also something I’d recommend.

You can learn more about Noelle and ZPOTS by visiting her at ZPOTS.com, NoelleVanhendrick.com or Vnoelle.com. Stop by Juelerye at 112 S. Main Street in Mooresville to explore creations by ZPOTS Studio in person.

Elijah Kell The Artist Behind the Passion

If 10-year-old Elijah Kell could have glimpsed his future, he would be in awe of the 20-yearold Elijah Kell.

Now celebrating his 20th birthday, he is both a business owner and a glass artist extraordinaire!

“I was only 11 years old when I participated in my first professional juried art event, and then, I was even more hooked,” Elijah shares. “It’s been a wild ride with trial and error on both the creative and business sides. I’ve been full time as an artist and entrepreneur for about two years, so I’m in the early stages of building a sustainable career. All that said, I’m grateful, hopeful, excited and determined to do whatever it takes to get there.”

In March of 2023, Elijah proudly launched Kell Glass LLC, designing, crafting, firing and finishing all his sculptures in his studio in Mint Hill, NC, just outside Charlotte. Each piece is its own work of art – with no two exactly alike. Whether through intricate layering or unexpected color combinations, Elijah ensures every creation has its own unique story.

“I love doing what I do and feel grateful I’m able to do it. Being in my workshop with the music turned up – designing, experimenting and creating – is my favorite place to be. I spend hours and hours there, and most days it feels more like minutes,” he shares.

“Although I’ve been creating with glass for 10 years, eight of those years were during my school years, so I split time between a lot of different directions. It was basically a passion I became obsessed with so I was learning to make my creative ideas a reality.”

Crystalline: Iris Agate – Elijah Kell’s largest and most intricate sculpture to date.

Elijah began doing art shows and festivals in order to sell his work and make money for more supplies and, through those events, discovered how much he loved talking to people about his art and how rewarding it felt when others were genuinely interested. What are some of Elijah’s earliest favorite pieces?

“If I had to choose a favorite, one would be an early piece in my Coral Reef series when I was

only 11 years old. Until then, my glass work was created mosaic-style with cut shards designed on top of a blank glass sheet. The idea of not using a foundational piece of glass to hold everything together was something I wanted to challenge myself to do, so I spent time figuring out how to layer cut strips of glass and freeform the pieces to a viable shape that would hold up through the firing process.

That specific coral-inspired piece was a huge personal triumph. I loved it so much, I took it to art shows but refused to sell it. I still have it in my studio today!”

Another favorite is one of his first big commissions – at the age of 15 – and he loves collaborating with clients.

Continued on page 42.

Sea Coral – One of Elijah Kell’s earliest freeform works, created at just 11 years old.

Continued from page 41.

“The client asked for a vase that captured the essence of stained glass and design elements in architect Antoni Gaudi’s buildings –which were some of their favorite travel destinations in Spain. I had just met them, so I had mixed feelings of being overwhelmed and honored they felt so confident in me as an artist. At the same time, I was thinking, how the heck am I actually going to create all of that in a glass vase? I spent a couple of months reading and researching Gaudi’s work and developing my color palette and overall design. I spent another month constructing and laying out the design with the firing cycles and finishing process after that. I titled the piece Radiance, and it’s still one of my all time favorites.”

Growing up in a family dedicated to service and uplifting others, Elijah knows that’s a big part of who he is.

“I wanted to establish a primary charity partner and, after learning about Arts for Life, I was drawn to their mission of providing art programs to pediatric hospital patients. I felt a connection because my own artistic journey stemmed from difficult times when I was young, and art was definitely my escape. I’m thankful to be part of an organization that uses art for happiness and healing.”

Each year, Elijah dedicates a sculpture to Arts for Life and donates 100% of its proceeds to the organization. This year’s donation is Fire Opal from his Crystalline series, also available at Juelerye Artisan Gallery. He volunteers at Levine Children’s Hospital and works with several other

Elijah Kell, age 10

nonprofits including Bright Blessings, an organization founded by his family that supports homeless and impoverished children across four counties. Elijah is equally invested in two local child advocacy centers, the Coalition Against Child Abuse in Lincoln County, as well as the Dove House in Mooresville, creating sculptures for all three organizations’ annual events.

Best news for all: Elijah has grown to love the Lake Norman-Mooresville area and plans to move here next fall.

“Between my involvement with Mooresville Arts, my representation with Juelerye Artisan Gallery and having many collectors in the area, I’ve developed amazing relationships. I’m excited to mix in a little lake life with my work life!”

Visit elijahkellartglass.com and follow Elijah’s journey on Instagram @elijahkellartglass. In Mooresville, you can find Kell Glass at Juelerye Artisan Gallery, located at 112 S. Main Street, 704.728.0460, and at juelerye.com.

MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND ELIJAH KELL: CELEBRATING 10 YEARS IN GLASS

Friday, March 28th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. (drop-in) and Saturday, March 29th from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. (drop-in) at Juelerye Artisan Gallery. March Madness BASKETBALL, BRACKETS & UNPREDICTABILITY

Every year, as winter melts away and the first signs of spring start to emerge, one thing remains constant in the United States –March Madness. No, it’s not a nationwide outbreak of insanity (though it sometimes feels that way); it’s the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, a three-week extravaganza that captivates the country, defies logic and produces as many high-flying dunks as it does headaches for anyone trying to fill out a perfect bracket.

The Madness kicks off in mid-March and quickly spirals into chaos, with 68 college basketball teams battling it out in a single-elimination tournament. The tournament’s format, with games played across various cities and culminated by a climactic Final Four, is a spectacle of sport, tradition and drama. However, if you’re looking for a clearcut favorite to win, prepare to be disappointed. The unpredictability of March Madness is what makes it, well, madness.

Brackets: Where Logic Goes to Die

One of the most enduring traditions of March Madness is the bracket challenge. Fans – both casual and die-hard – fill out their predictions for the entire tournament, from the first round all the way through the championship game. The goal? To correctly guess which teams will advance and ultimately win. Simple, right? If only it were that easy.

March Madness is famous for its upsets, where lower-seeded teams (also known as “Cinderella” teams) take down heavy favorites. The odds of selecting a perfect bracket are so astronomically low that they’re practically nonexistent. So, when your cousin Dave, who hasn’t watched a single game all season, picks the team with the coolest mascot to go all the way, don’t be too surprised when his bracket performs better than yours.

One of the great joys of March Madness is witnessing the “Cinderella story.” Every year, a team that was overlooked or dismissed by the

experts rises from obscurity to take down top-ranked opponents. These surprise underdogs are the ones that turn the tournament into a spectacle of the improbable. Just ask George Mason University in 2006 or Florida Gulf Coast University in 2013 when they became household names, not because they were expected to win, but because they shocked the basketball world.

The Madness Behind the Madness

So, why is it called “March Madness?” Well, the term was originally coined in 1939 by an Illinois high school basketball official named Henry V. Porter, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that it became synonymous with the NCAA tournament. As TV broadcasts grew in popularity, more and more fans began tuning in to watch the drama unfold – complete with buzzer beaters, crazy upsets and teams advancing against all odds.

And, while most of the country is glued to their TVs, businesses also see a massive uptick in productivity losses. March Madness is so all consuming that millions of people end up “sick” for work, pretending to have the flu as they stay home to watch their team’s improbable run to the Sweet 16. It’s a phenomenon known as “office pool fever,” and it’s as contagious as any virus.

The Final Shot

In the end, March Madness isn’t just about basketball; it’s about community, camaraderie and chaos. It’s a time when casual fans can get as invested as lifelong followers, where every game feels like the most important thing in the world and where bracket-busting upsets bring people together in a shared experience of delightful frustration. Whether you’re a basketball fanatic or someone who couldn’t care less about sports, March Madness is a wild ride that’s impossible to ignore.

And, who knows? Maybe this year, the unthinkable will happen – and your bracket will finally be the one to break the curse of perfection. But, probably not.

How to Know the Difference Between a Healthy and Unhealthy Friendship

When I was younger, I was grateful for my friends in school, and I always thought that we would be best friends forever. However, as we grow up and life changes, some of our friendships change. At 24 years old, I have been blessed with new friendships in my life, and I have lost a few. Losing a friendship is never easy, but it is important only to surround yourself with genuine friends. I have come to realize the true difference between a healthy and unhealthy friendship as I have experienced both types. Below, I am going to explain what I believe are qualities of both healthy and unhealthy friendships.

HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS

• Your Friend Supports You: Being in a healthy friendship means that your friend supports you and is proud of you. Your friend is excited for you when good things happen in your life and sad for you when difficult things happen in your life. Having a friend who is supportive means having a friend who is constantly there for you and wants the best for you in your life.

• Your Friend is Trustworthy: It is important to have a friend who is trustworthy which means that your friend is someone that you can trust when talking to, especially if that includes talking about difficult things. You know that your friend is not going to tell other people and will keep what you share with them only to themselves. Also, having a trustworthy friend means that your friend follows through on what they say such as actually meeting you for dinner when you schedule a dinner together.

• Moments of Joy & Laughter Are Common: I believe that a sign of a healthy friendship is a friendship that includes plenty of joy and laughter. Being around my best friend is always joyful because we are always laughing which always makes me feel happy. Having moments in friendships where you can just simply laugh and enjoy being around each other is such a joy.

UNHEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS

• Your Friend is Always Competing With You: Having a friend who is always competing with you and is trying to be one step or season ahead of you in life is not healthy. Instead of feeling supported by your friend, you will feel like your friend is trying to constantly be better than you and have things that you do not have such as getting married before you or getting another degree before you, etc. This friendship is not a supportive one, and it is not healthy to surround yourself with someone who does not want the best for you.

• Your Friend is Not Trustworthy: Another sign of an unhealthy friendship is that your friend is not able to be trusted. This could mean that your friend shares your secrets with other people, does not follow through on plans, etc. It is hard to be friends with someone who you are not able to trust. You will never be able to grow in your friendship and have someone to talk to.

• Moments of Joy & Laughter Are Rare: As I mentioned earlier, I feel that having joy and laughter are important in a friendship, and if you do not feel joy or cannot laugh with a friend, then that is a sign of an unhealthy friendship. Maybe you cannot laugh because your friend is always complaining, always trying to be better than you or is simply not nice to you. Having a best friend means having someone who you can genuinely enjoy being around.

I hope that this article will help people see some different qualities of both healthy and unhealthy friendships. When we surround ourselves with genuine friends, we feel better and experience more joy versus being in an unhealthy friendship. It is sad to me that sometimes our friendships change and go in different directions, and we can still talk to friends who we are maybe not as close to anymore; but it is important to spend time with friends who are there for you no matter what.

Hinds’ Feet Farm and Christ the King: A Day of Giving Years of Community Service in the Making

Common ground may not always be easy to find, but it emerges when we intentionally set out to serve others. Hinds’ Feet Farm has been doing just that for 25 years, providing services and support to individuals with traumatic and other acquired brain injuries. This dream began after Philip Lance Van Every Foil, the son of Puddin’ and Martin Foil, was injured at the age of 16. Like so many other families, the Foils found themselves on an entirely new and uncharted path.

As we recognize March as Brain Injury Awareness Month, we want to share how this dream has grown and how our community continues to make a difference in the lives of others.

When Gregory Stump, Fine Arts Department Chair at Christ the King Catholic High School (CTK), reached out to me, Beth Callahan, Executive Director at Hinds’ Feet Farm, to discuss CTKCHS students volunteering during their Community Days of Service, I was thrilled. Our nonprofit has a rich history of welcoming volunteers of all ages, and I eagerly agreed to meet.

As Mr. Stump outlined the school’s mission to serve, I began envisioning what their support might look like. He asked practical questions—how many students we could accommodate, what grades would be involved, how long they’d stay, and so on. I imagined a small group helping with tasks like cleaning fences or tidying up a natural area. When he said, “200 students for two days,” I was stunned. Suddenly, I saw an opportunity to tackle major projects that had long been on our wish list.

We discussed ambitious goals for their visit, including significant upgrades to our Activity Barn, improvements to horse trails, fence cleaning, and updates to past projects. By January, while coordination was well underway, I still had moments of doubt about managing such a large undertaking. However, when people with shared purpose come together, great things often happen.

On January 29th and 30th, buses rolled in at 9 a.m., and the CTKCHS Community Day of Service began in earnest. The students arrived prepared and ready to work, and Hinds’ Feet Farm was equally ready to put their energy and enthusiasm to good use. Together, we accomplished tasks that would have taken our team countless hours to complete on our own.

As we commemorate March as Brain Injury Awareness Month and celebrate 25 years of being incorporated, we reflect on the incredible gift of these students’ time and dedication. We hope their experience at Hinds’ Feet Farm will leave a lasting

impression, fostering a deeper understanding of safety and prevention and perhaps inspiring them to pursue careers where they might encounter individuals or families affected by brain injuries.

“It takes a village”—a community of stewards and advocates for those in need. At Hinds’ Feet Farm, we are forever grateful to these students and the many volunteers who have supported us over the years. The circle of life and giving continues, even as brain injuries remain a significant challenge. Annually, an estimated 70,000 people in North Carolina sustain a new brain injury, adding to the over 200,000 individuals living with its effects.

Greg Stump and his daughter, who volunteered with us years ago, exemplify this ongoing legacy of service. Their connection underscores the enduring impact of community support.

HERE WE ARE HERE IN THE LAST 1/3 OF Q1 - ALREADY!

Assuming that you are someone who sets goals (I am not talking resolutionsi“resolutioners” have already diverted) what progress have you made? Have you established a pattern of consistency?

• Consistency + Time = Success.

• In health, wealth, business, spiritual growth, relationships.

• Consistency over time wins the race.

Let’s dive in a little deeper. Let me share some tangible action steps to support you in really up-leveling your success this year.

Goal setting is often heralded as the cornerstone of success, yet many struggle with actually achieving it. The secret lies in the consistency of the small steps taken; that turn into habit. By breaking down ambitious objectives into manageable tasks and maintaining steady progress, we can achieve extraordinary results; oftentimes exceeding the original set goal.

Notice how this principle has transformed the life of just one of my clients (name changed to respect her privacy).

Samantha, a successful real estate agent leading a team of high-performing agents, was struggling to create a cohesive company culture. Her goal was to foster collaboration and trust among her team while maintaining high productivity levels. The challenge was daunting, but breaking it into small, actionable steps made it achievable.

We began by identifying a single behavior Samantha could model weekly: intentional recognition of progress. Each Friday, she wrote personalized notes to team members, acknowledging their efforts and contributions. To further promote collaboration, we

introduced a brief weekly meeting where team members shared one success and one challenge; along with quarterly leadership and communication trainings.

Over time, these simple actions began to compound. Team members felt valued and became more open in sharing ideas and supporting one another. Trust and psychological safety was now at the center of all team interaction. Within six months, Samantha noticed a marked improvement in team morale and communication, reflected in a 15% increase in productivity and higher client satisfaction scores. What seemed like minor changes ultimately laid the foundation for a stronger, more unified culture.

This client success story highlights an essential truth: small, consistent actions are the building blocks of success. Breaking down your goals into action steps:

1. Reduces overwhelm: Breaking goals into smaller steps makes them less intimidating and more manageable.

2. Builds momentum: Each small achievement fuels motivation, creating an unconscious positive feedback loop.

3. Enhances focus: Concentrating on one action at a time prevents distraction and ensures steady progress.

4. Encourages adaptability: Small steps allow room for adjustment without derailing the overall goal.

When it comes to really 10x-ing goals, accountability is a game-changer! Having a coach or mentor can provide the guidance and encouragement needed to stay on track. A coach not only helps break down goals into actionable steps but also offers invaluable perspective on how all areas of life can be affected.

Equally important is surrounding yourself with the right people. Positive, like-minded individuals can uplift and inspire you, while a strong support system can keep you motivated when the journey feels tough. Remember, you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

According to research published in Psychological Science, people who share their goals with others and feel accountable are 65% more likely to achieve their goals.

If you are a leader who is ready to 10x your goals this year, or an executive looking for cultural transformation for yourself and your team, connect with Lindsey via LinkedIn, email at lindsey@LindseyFisherNC.com or book a call via the QR code.

Trackside Talks A LOOK AT LEGACY MOTOR CLUB

Names like Jimmie Johnson and Richard Petty make any NASCAR fan’s ears perk up. Why? They are two of the three drivers to ever hold the title of 7x Cup Series Champion. Beyond being two of the most skilled drivers to ever grace the track, they are also two of the most adored drivers likely due to their relatability, humility and kindness. Beginning in 2023, the two came together, along with other notable key people, to propel a team who first formed in 2000 under a different name to become a top contending team in today’s competition –a goal they continue to push towards today.

The team has had a few different name changes in its time. What began as Evernham Motorsports eventually became Richard Petty Motorsports in 2009, then Petty GMS in 2021. In 2023, the team rebranded as LEGACY MOTOR CLUB after Jimmie Johnson became co-owner, alongside Maury Gallagher, with Richard Petty “The King” as CLUB ambassador. Other key figures in NASCAR make up LEGACY MC, such as Petty’s longtime crew chief and fellow Hall of

Famer, Dale Inman, Hall of Famer Matt Kenseth and youngest to ever win the Daytona 500, Trevor Bayne. A team with so many heavy hitting names within the sport is now in its third year of racing in the NASCAR Cup Series since becoming LEGACY MC, and they’re just getting started. As a now majority owner and part-time driver of the number 84 car, Jimmie Johnson says, “Building a legacy takes time.”

Johnson provided some insight to help fans get to know the CLUB a bit more. He shares, “The mission of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB is to become a premier global motorsports property bringing together the past and the future and be an inclusive CLUB for car enthusiasts everywhere.” Though Johnson is highly recognized within the NASCAR community, he doesn’t let that go to his head or skew the mission of the CLUB. He said, “I came from humble beginnings, and I think it’s just about staying true to yourself and being humble and kind. That’s kind of how I operate. I never expected to be so successful in this sport, and I am thankful to everyone who helped me accomplish that success.” This year is the CLUB’s third year competing at the pinnacle of NASCAR competition and the expectation is clear as Johnson shares, “We are here to compete and win races, so performance is the focus. We have the team to do it with Erik and John Hunter. Our commitment to competition and to accomplishing the goals of our partners is what we always focus on.”

Erik Jones is in his fifth year behind the wheel of the iconic number 43 car, the third year under LEGACY MC. Jones is grateful for the resources available to his team at LEGACY MC such as Driver Optimization Leader Trevor Bayne and Competition Advisor Matt Kenseth. That, paired with the history of a winning pedigree, Jones said, “Everyone there provides good insight and everyone has their own way to prepare.” Jones, in his ninth season racing in the Cup series, remarks he “has been at this for quite a while, so you take what you can and add in what works for you best.” adding, “it’s nice to balance ideas around and say what you’re needing from the team side of things and from a driver’s point of view.” Jones signed a multiyear contract with LEGACY MC in August of last year and is glad to be able to continue in that relationship saying, “My main goal is to get the 43 car to the top 10 and take advantage of the races where we can compete for a win.” He said further, “I’m in the prime of my career for the next five to eight years, and I’m glad to be in a position to take advantage of that time with the equipment and resources, really looking to hit our stride this year.” Jones is the only driver in the history of NASCAR to have received Rookie of the Year

honors in all three national divisions. He also earned LEGACY MC its first top five finish when he came in third place in the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway in September of 2023.

John Hunter Nemechek’s first full season racing in the Cup series was in 2020. After that season, Nemechek decided to put in more work behind the wheel in the Truck and Xfinity series for a few years with loads of success before transitioning back to racing full time in the Cup series as the driver of LEGACY MC’s number 42 Toyota Camry in 2024. Now, back in the saddle for his second year driving the 42, he shared, “I have to be on my A game at all times; no room for error or mistakes. Last year was a test; not the year we wanted, but I’m looking forward to 2025 and getting back into victory lane.” With the end of season hire last year of veteran Technical Director Brian Campe, Nemechek says, “He is a wealth of knowledge

any business as it directly affects employees and partners. The CLUB understands the importance of a positive work culture as Johnson said, “There are a lot of ways to build a great culture, but having the right leaders to lead is one of the keys, and we have that. Then, putting the people in the right places who are talented and skilled, then everyone caring about the same goals and each other is how to build a culture that works.” Jones and Nemechek echo the sentiment Johnson shares with Jones saying, “Our goal is to be a competitive team, doing well each week and being top contenders.” Nemechek adds, “The culture at the CLUB is really good. Everyone is aligned in that we are one team with one goal. We work together and push each other to excel and strive for success.”

and brings a lot to the table.” Acknowledging how the off-season was a lot of hard work and changes for them, he went on to say of Campe, “He is a person who brings a different energy and mindset to the team, and he definitely isn’t afraid to push forward to get things done.” LEGACY MC honors both its storied past and promising future, with a lot riding on the shoulders of both Jones and Nemechek to continue the legacy and maybe even add a little something of their own to it. The significance of being in such a position, Nemechek says, is “great to be a part of,” continuing, “we all are striving for success, and continuing to build on the legacy is definitely about what you do on the racetrack in driving and winning; but also, the impact and mark you leave behind on everyone who supports you is even bigger to me than what you do in your career.”

Culture plays a huge part in the success of

This is just the start for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, but the history runs deep. Nemechek shared a little bit of what it feels like to be a part of the CLUB, working and being in relationship with so many legacy names. For instance, what’s it do to a room when Richard Petty walks in? Nemechek was quick to share, “The energy definitely changes when The King is in the room. He’s a fun guy to be around with lots of stories and advice which is one of my favorite things about him… just to hear his background and what they did back then.” As for what it’s like to receive a piece of advice from Johnson? Nemechek shared, “It’s really neat to be honest. Being able to work with Jimmie as my boss, mentor, friend and advisor – he definitely fits into all those different roles. There’s a lot to chat about, and there’s a reason he’s won seven championships and 83 races in the Cup series. He doesn’t like to lose, and he will continue to push forward no matter the circumstances, so I look forward to continuing that.”

The legacy of the CLUB is so vital to the mission and the identity of the organization that it became their team name. Johnson believes, “A legacy is more than what you leave behind but something you build everyday.” He goes on to share, “I think everyone coming into work every day and having high expectations as well as a high level of accountability for themselves is important. When everyone is working together and rowing the same direction, you start to see success.” It’s evident the talent, drive and passion those at the CLUB possess as they all work towards the common goal. So, where does Johnson see LEGACY MOTOR CLUB seven years from now? Simple. He says, “Winning races and championships. Expansion beyond racing. Big plans!”

Spotlight on Western North Carolina Artisans Andrea Freeman, Freeman Clay Works

For many residents of Western North Carolina, their oasis of solitude in the great outdoors was tarnished by the effects of Hurricane Helene.

Local artisan Andrea Freeman, owner of Freeman Clay Works, shares that deep connection to the outdoors and feels the determined spirit of those around her who are rebuilding and renewing every single day.

“Being outside has always been my holy place,” she shares. “It’s where I reconnect with myself. I walk almost every day, and it doesn’t matter if it’s in our beautiful WNC woods or around the neighborhood – I always feel renewed.”

Andrea’s home pottery studio – actually her basement – has always had flooding issues, so when she saw the predicted rain amounts for Helene, she prepared for three days by digging trenches away from the house, cleaning the gutters and gathering her bailing supplies.

“I was one of the fortunate ones who had little to deal with after the storm,” she shares. “I did bail constantly for two days leading up to the storm and all night before the eye hit. When the electricity went out, I just had to wait.”

She ended with only three or four inches of water in certain areas of her studio – and admits to a bit of survivor’s guilt.

“What folks need to understand is this region experienced extreme trauma. I live near the French Broad River and witnessed the destruction of so many businesses as they floated down the river,” she adds. “Roads are still closed, there are remnants of buildings and cars line the roads by the river. We’ve learned how amazing this community is and have so much for which to be thankful.”

Rediscovering the joy of expression every day has always been a blessing

for Andrea, whose functional pottery is a collection of handpainted pieces intended for daily use, not simply for decoration. Her creative earthenware evokes a childlike innocence, a touch of whimsy and, often, a few delightful words of wisdom which is one way she connected with Jacque Bassett, owner of Juelerye Artisan Gallery & Gifts in Mooresville, NC. Juelerye proudly carries Freeman Clay Works in its beautiful gallery, and Jacque treasures sharing Andrea’s pottery with their customers across the country, while also cherishing their mutual love of meaningful quotes.

“Andrea is a gem to work with, and customers love her creative mugs,” Jacque says. She shares a bond with Andrea that’s comprised of love for both art and life!

“I have a deep love of quotes and often use them in my work,” Andrea says. “Jacque also loves quotes, so when she realized I used them in my work, it was wonderful to marry her son’s favorite quote – ‘Ain’t Life Grand’ –with my art. It’s always such an honor to make such meaningful works!”

A mutual friend also reached out after Jacque’s mom passed to ask Andrea if she could make a pitcher with a dahlia and her mom’s favorite saying. Of course, the answer was “yes!”

Much of Andrea’s inspiration has come from her two sons – Rohan, 23, and Max, 20, both now in college and immersed in their own pursuits of art, music, production and design.

“My kids named my basement studio the Hobbit Hole because it has a short door and a shorter ceiling, so yes, it is open to the public, but it’s not easy for everyone to navigate!” Andrea adds. She remembers giving her boys art supplies and observing while they explored all the possibilities.

“Working with children in art helped me loosen up and realize I needed to be

more free and truer to myself,” she adds. “Children’s artwork is my favorite of all art –it just makes me really happy!”

Besides Juelerye in Mooresville, you can find Freeman Clay Works at Chifferobe in Black Mountain, Taupe Gallery in North Wilkesboro, Bryand Gallery in Wilmington and in several coffeehouses including The Dripolator Coffeehouse in the Asheville area.

Inspired by the spirit and determination of her fellow artists and neighbors, Andrea invites all to come visit!

“We’re a tourist town and our artists, shops, restaurants, hotels and Airbnbs need you! Not just Asheville, but the smaller towns, too,” she shares.

Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center THE PURSUIT OF PROTECTING & HEALING

True to their endearing mission of providing the resources and healing that child victims of sexual assault so richly deserve, Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center is launching into 2025 with boundless love and an elevated focus on the mental health of these young victims.

Dove House provides a wide array of services to child victims of sexual assault – as well as their non-offending family members – and all their direct services are provided at no cost to the client.

Amid staggering statistics – post-pandemic estimates reveal the number of children struggling with anxiety and depression skyrocketed from 5.8 million to 7.3 million, an increase of more than 1.5 million – the pursuit of healing goes on.

“The good news in all of this is that we, as Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center and our multidisciplinary team, are leading from the front lines and are already engaged in much of the work,” shares Executive Director Beth McKeithan. “Both of our signature events this year will have a mental health emphasis, and we’re working hard to focus on the prevention side as well as the healing side once the abuse has occurred.”

Research reveals that many victim-survivors report ongoing adverse impacts on their mental health and well being including anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders and disturbances, sleep disruption and insomnia, and dissociation. Long-term clinical psychiatric diagnoses associated with child sexual abuse include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders. Sexual abuse in children is associated with adverse health conditions in both childhood and adulthood, with many also interconnected with the mental health impacts of abuse. General health, gastrointestinal health, gynecological or reproductive health, pain (including in the immediate term from injuries or longer term chronic conditions), cardiopulmonary health and body mass index are all frequently impacted.

The message is clear – what you do matters more than ever!

“Your support is vital to sustaining our mission,” Beth adds. “This year, our events will focus on mental health, aligning with our commitment to prevention and healing. By attending, donating or volunteering, you can play a role in ensuring that every child who needs us has access to compassionate care and regular lifesaving resources.”

Sadly, child advocacy centers across North Carolina are facing a 90% federal funding budget cut. That means the need for support is a desperate one so that services can be provided on a consistent basis – giving children a chance to truly heal. Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center is committed to addressing this crisis head on in order to continue the process of building a brighter future for children who are survivors. The team works tirelessly in three areas:

• Ensuring children receive the healing they deserve.

• Emphasizing prevention to reduce instances of abuse in our community.

• Supporting children and families in the wake of trauma.

Protecting and healing the most vulnerable members of our community is an ongoing outreach for Dove House! This year’s signature event – An Evening for Dove House – will be held Saturday, April 12th, 2025, from 5:00 p.m.

- 10:30 p.m. at a new location, The Venues at Dale Earnhardt Inc. in Mooresville. The evening – “Let’s Race for Dove House” – will include delicious local gourmet food, a music-filled after party you won’t want to miss and both a live and silent auction.

A hint to Lake Norman residents: If you’re a business owner, could you donate your product or services to the auction? Do you own a vacation home and could donate a week or weekend stay? Dove House is also looking for donations of bottles of wine, bourbon or high end liquor for the event, or you can support local businesses by donating gift certificates for restaurants, spas or other services to the Dove House auction.

Fire Safety Tips From Your Local Firefighter

Today and every day is a good day to talk about fire safety to make sure we’re brushed up on our knowledge and skills to either prevent a fire or know what to do should we ever be in such a predicament. Rather than assume you won’t encounter a home fire, why not ensure that you won’t by reading this article and taking fire safety seriously? We routinely teach it to our children in school, but how often do adults go through drills or review ways to stay safe from a fire? Well, today is the day! Local Firefighter Jacob Henson shares his knowledge with us below.

Henson, a senior firefighter, is in his fourth year working for Mooresville Fire and Rescue, currently posted at Station 5. He decided to become a firefighter after volunteering as a part-time firefighter

while he pursued his mechanical engineering degree at Purdue. After he graduated, he knew he wanted to make a full-time career of it. He shared, “Firefighting provides a unique opportunity to be a part of a job where every day is different. I love the opportunities to think on my feet and problem solve as part of a team. Likewise, my job affords me a tremendous amount of trust in the community which enables me to feel like I can make a tangible difference in the lives of the people we serve. Many of the social and natural barriers that people put up are immediately lowered when we arrive, and I love the ability to connect quickly and help. I can honestly say that I love my job and enjoy going to work with my crew when it’s my turn.”

What are the most common causes of house fires?

The most common cause of house fires are cooking fires. They account for nearly 50%.

What practices should everyone be doing to prevent a house fire?

Never throw water on a cooking or electrical fire! Have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and laundry room.

What is the number one piece of advice you’d give someone to prevent a fire in their home?

Make sure your smoke detectors are all functioning properly. Have a safe exit plan with your family, and ensure the kids know where to meet outside if there’s a fire in the house – then, practice it regularly. Try not to scare the kids; instead, make the practice drills fun by offering a treat afterward. Also, make sure they understand that they should never hide from firefighters. Take them to your local station, introduce them to the firefighters and ask the firefighter to gear up, so the kids can see they aren’t scary.

What should you do if your house does catch on fire?

Exit the building as quickly as possible. Stay as low as possible. If it’s a small fire, you might be able to contain it with an extinguisher, but don’t put yourself or your family in danger. Always remember that things can be replaced, but people can’t.

On average, how many house fires are there a year in Mooresville? Mooresville has approximately 150 structure fires per year.

Instead of letting fear of experiencing a fire consume you, arm yourself with knowledge of what to do if you are ever in one and, also, how to prevent them from happening in the first place. Another leading cause of home fires is clogged dryer vents. Do yourself a favor by taking preventative action to have yours professionally cleaned! Clear Vent is a local business providing dryer vent cleaning services to the LKN area by nationally certified technicians who also happen to serve as professional firefighters in North Carolina, so you know you can trust them! One Man’s Perspective GRAND CANYON

When I was working, I had to go to Phoenix, Arizona on business. Not one to let an opportunity pass me by, I started thinking about bringing Marianne. She had never seen the Grand Canyon, and this was an opportunity. The canyon was only three and a half hours drive north of where the meeting would be held. That should work out for us. We planned to fly into Phoenix, rent a car and drive to the Grand Canyon. We made a reservation to spend the night at the lodge at the canyon. If we could get there early enough, we would be able to take in the sights during the day. I still remember when we first drove up to the canyon and saw it for the first time, it was spectacular. Truly one of the great wonders of the world made by God over millions of years.

The canyon is about 7000’ high. In the south and 8000’ at the north rim. The Colorado River has cut through the land, and it is one mile below the land above. You can get to the bottom by walking, hiking, donkey or by taking a raft down the river. A friend of mine said that we had to take the donkey ride to the bottom of the canyon. He said the donkeys walk on the outside of the path, and it scared him to death. The donkey handler said the donkeys were smart because they didn’t want you to reach out to the wall and push them off. I had to think about that!

Our accommodations at the lodge were fantastic—rustic yet comfortable, with

stunning views and delicious meals. We turned in early that night, as we needed to drive to Phoenix in the morning for my presentation. Additionally, the weatherman had forecasted snow, and we had a long drive ahead of us.

We got up early and the weatherman’s predictions were right on. Everything was white, we got in our car and started down the mountain. As we drove, we monitored the radio. They had all kinds of alerts about the weather. The important information was that the snow was increasing, and they expected a couple of feet in the mountains. They said that when you reached 3000 feet it should turn to rain, we were about 7000 feet at the time. The road that we took down from the canyon was rustic to say the least. There were NO cars or life on the road at all, just woods and more woods. Not a place to get stuck or have a flat tire. That’s when the windshield wiper on the driver’s side came flying off. We were afraid to stop since we didn’t have any chance of finding the wiper in the snow, and no tools to fix it anyway. We had to get to the 3000foot level where we would be a lot better off. Driving was almost impossible. Marianne tried to steer the car from the passenger’s side where she could see, and I tried to operate the pedals based on her commands. Very slow and tedious going. And of course, it continued to snow and got deeper and deeper. If we got stuck, we would have frozen to death. But we didn’t, we kept going forward, slow but sure. You can imagine how relieved we felt when we got to the 3000-foot level, and it was raining.

At the time, I was working with the General Departments at AT&T, where my role was to streamline the process for assigning services when customers requested new installations. This involved coordinating telephone lines, cables, central office resources, and outside line assignments. The meeting went smoothly, and we wrapped up that afternoon.

The Grand Canyon is a MUST-SEE location.

Dear Dr. Keith,

I’m a 37-year-old widow with two children, a 10-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. My husband, the love of my life, passed suddenly a little more than two years ago. He was a great husband, father and friend; our life together was wonderful and our kids adored him. He had a fulfilling job, substantial pension, life insurance and invested well. He made sure that if anything happened to him, we’d be set for life. Devastated by our loss, the kids and I struggled for more than a year to adapt to life without him, still trying to adjust. I became depressed and somewhat reclusive.

Normally good students, both kids struggled in school and had a hard time adjusting. It was challenging, being a good mother and filling the void created by his passing; trying to be both mother and father to our grieving children. In time, we started to heal, and we’re all doing better. The kids’ grades have improved and both are involved in sports.

Since his passing, I’ve been in therapy and re-engaged with friends who have been extremely supportive. Often, I find myself being the third wheel when joining them. Quite frankly, I’m lonely. My friends and therapist have been encouraging me to start dating, and I believe I might be ready. My fear is that it will ruin my relationship with my kids, and it will betray the memory of my husband. Is it selfish to want another person to share my life with? Has enough time gone by to even consider dating? Will I be abandoning my children by bringing a potential partner into their lives? Will I be able to recreate the wonderful life we had with my husband? The fear of the unknown has me paralyzed. I need your help.

ASK DR. KEITH

Hey Jenna,

I’m sorry for the loss of your husband; it’s always a challenge when we lose someone we love. Grief doesn’t have a set schedule, and the adjustment time for each of us is different, with some people taking longer than others. To tell you it’s okay to start dating again, or not, isn’t up to anyone but you. It’s not the mistakes we make that are hard to live with, it’s the regrets. Will you regret continuing to live in fear, hiding your true feelings from your children, being lonely and pretending to be happy, or giving yourself an opportunity to fall in love again?

Is it wrong to want to build a relationship with someone who brings you joy, enhances your life and, if all goes well, wants to grow old with you. I don’t think so. What’s important is for you to communicate with your kids honestly about how you’re feeling and your desire to date again. Children generally want their parents to be happy, and if you’re not, they’ll know it. It’s a mistake when parents make their children feel responsible for their happiness, not uncommon when a spouse passes and they make their children their life. This happens when divorcees, widows or widowers choose to stay single and become empty nesters when their children move out. Eventually, your kids will move out to create a life of their own. Many single parents end up relying too much on their children for their happiness because they haven’t created a life for themselves outside of being a parent. That’s a part of who you are; don’t let it define you. It’s not only important, it’s vital to develop a great relationship with yourself and create a good life, a well rounded life

with passion and purpose that’s a wonderful example for your children. Doing this will empower you to be patient when choosing a partner, one who will be loving and supportive to you and your children. If you make a good choice, eventually, your children will accept your new relationship and understand it hasn’t diminished the love you have for your deceased husband or dishonor his memory. The best way for you to honor him is to live a joyful and successful life.

Has enough time gone by? Only you have that answer. Will starting to date be a mistake or regret? Trust your gut; time will tell. You’re entering a new chapter in your life; it’s wise to avoid regrets and know you’re going to make mistakes. Choose to learn and grow from them. Avoid trying to recreate or compare to what you had with your husband so you don’t set yourself up for disappointment. Every relationship is different and won’t be the same, however, it could be better. Choosing to embrace new adventures, relationships are like going on vacation, and we generally enjoy going on vacation, a journey into the unknown, being fearless and enjoying the ride.

MY JOURNEY WITH A SOURDOUGH STARTER

If you’ve ever admired the tangy aroma of freshly baked sourdough bread or seeing others successfully make a sourdough starter, you aren’t alone. It has been on my to-do list to make sourdough from scratch for many months. This past fall, I finally decided to give it a try, and let’s just say, the

At this stage, the starter will smell more pleasant, often with a slightly tangy or yeasty aroma. It will also double in size within a few hours of feeding. However, some days, my starter didn’t appear to do just that. Sourdough is very dependent on its environment – temperature, humidity and even the types of flour used can all influence how quickly things progress. The good

hesitant to do this, because I didn’t want the milk to spoil. I decided to move my dough to the refrigerator, since it needed to rise for a few hours. The results? It didn’t rise. This was a mistake on my end, and I should have listened to the recipe.

Finally, it was time for baking. My sourdough loaf baked well, albeit a little flat. The crust

You can visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame, explore the Levine Museum of the New South or enjoy the local food scene which is known for its southern flair. Charlotte also hosts a St. Patrick’s Day Parade which is returning in 2025.

Activities: Museum tours, dining, shopping, attending local festivals and exploring local art.

WILMINGTON AND THE CAPE FEAR COAST

Wilmington, a charming coastal city, is perfect for a spring visit. With March bringing the early blooms, the city’s gardens, especially the Airlie Gardens, are in full swing. Wilmington’s historic district is perfect for walking tours, and you can explore the Cape Fear Riverwalk for beautiful views and dining options. The area is also home to the Battleship North Carolina which offers tours of a WWII-era battleship.

Activities: Riverwalk strolls, garden visits, historic district tours and battleship tours.

NORTH CAROLINA WINE COUNTRY

The state has a growing wine industry, and March marks the beginning of the spring wine season. The Yadkin Valley, around Winston-Salem and the Haw River Wine Trail near Burlington are great places to explore in the early spring. Many vineyards host tours and tastings, and some even offer special events for the season. The wineries are less crowded in March, allowing you to enjoy a more relaxed experience.

Activities: Wine tastings, vineyard tours, food pairings and scenic drives.

HISTORIC NEW BERN

If you’re a history buff, New Bern is a charming town to visit in March. It was the first capital of North Carolina and offers several historic sites, including Tryon Palace, which was built in the 18th century. March is also when the town starts to warm up, making it pleasant for outdoor activities like walking along the Neuse River or exploring the town’s well preserved architecture.

Activities: Historic tours, museum visits, riverfront walks and local shopping.

North Carolina offers a diverse range of travel experiences in March. Whether you’re drawn to the mountains, beaches, cities or wine country, the state’s moderate spring weather makes it an ideal time for exploration. Whether you’re hiking in the Smoky Mountains, savoring a glass of wine in the Yadkin Valley or exploring the coast, there’s something for every type of traveler in North Carolina this March.

THE SUNSET OF LIFE

Dedicated to Dr. Jonathan Fisher, My Cardiologist

We wake up one day and realize Our body is changing before our eyes

Our skin’s getting saggy and our hair’s getting thin Now that when we know that old age has set in

Wheelchairs and walkers become our best friends And now we get acquainted with pee pads and Depends

The flavors of our childhood have long disappeared And we decide that our taste buds have been asleep for years

Our joints hurt now, and our backs are all bent Our get up and go has got up and went

The heart that has served us so long and so well Is beating much slower and beginning to fail

We’re now growing hair where it never has been And seeing deep wrinkles around our eyes and our chin

Our nights seem much longer as we twist, toss and turn While the trips to the bathroom become our biggest concern

The medical alerts we have, should we fall Has become our most faithful friend of all

As our memories fade and our eyes grow dim Our driving days have come to an end

Because our bodies are older and becoming quite frail The drugs we can tolerate are harder to tell

Thank God for the Doctors on whom we depend To hold us together ‘til our warranty ends.
