Is this cover beautiful or what? Was it a challenge to capture a quickly changing sunset? Absolutely. Was it worth the effort? Without a doubt! It feels surreal to see my dream come to life through this magazine. Here we are, one year into this journey, and it has not only met, but surpassed my wildest hopes and expectations. Check out a fun reflection of this past year on page 58. One of my early encounters last fall was with Dustin Keith, the owner of T H E L A N D I N G R E S TA U R A N T. While the initial meeting ended on a promising note, there was no immediate commitment. But I don’t back down easily. I diligently delivered magazines month after month, and persistently checked in. What ultimately tipped the scales? I can’t be sure—was it my relentless determination, the magazine’s quality, or perhaps a combination of both? If you haven’t experienced The Landing restaurant yet, it’s high time you did. You’ll see major transformations, it has always been a personal favorite for my family, and I encourage you to pay a visit and witness the changes firsthand. Company coming for a visit? Book a sunset cruise for your upcoming guests and relish the journey with Dustin’s I S L A N D V I B E S C H A R T E R business. Sit back, unwind, and let Dustin and his team work their magic. Find the full story on page 26. I want to give a huge shout-out to my dear friend, J O N E R I C J O H N S O N ( J E J P H O T O S ) , for capturing those stunning photographs that grace our pages and this month’s cover. Let’s also extend a warm welcome to a few new partners. I’m certain most are familiar

We are excited to have Nick from M I A M I C H E in Mooresville, who not only has amazing food, but gives back in a big way to our community, head to page 17 and stay tuned for an article next month! As I write these words, my daughter and amazing business partner, Brooke Eagle, and I are in Maine, visiting my brother, Brent, and sister-in-law, Donna. Sharing this experience with my parents, who’ve made this journey every summer for the past 11 years, is truly a special reunion. With spectacular views and temperatures hovering in the 60s, we’re being treated to the finest homemade meals, courtesy of my sister-in-law, an exceptional cook, and my brother, a gifted baker who spoils us with the most amazing homemade desserts. 2020—what a year. Most remember it as a time of panic, frustration, and despair. The world put out a closed sign and everyone was left wondering, what’s next? So many new challenges, so much uncertainty and yet there were so many stories of hope and heroism that rose to the top. Individuals who applied their unique talents and creativity to help in their own way. One such individual is Jeff Hamm. An entrepreneur who had recently discovered the increasingly popular podcast trend, Jeff had just launched Small Business Journeys, where he was sharing stories of successful entrepreneurs across the country. A comfortable conversationalist with a wealth of marketing experience, Jeff was making great strides in this endeavor when the pandemic turned the whole world upside down. Though he was one of the lucky ones who could have continued down this path from the safety of his home, Jeff came to the realization that he could do more. “In April of 2020, I had a sudden and clear vision of a podcast that needed to be produced. I had learned through the challenges of that first attempt called Small Business Journeys that I had a better chance of making a difference as a podcast producer if I narrowed the scope of the podcast and focused on a smaller market.” By working closer to home, Jeff was able to directly help small business owners he knew personally, their friends, and even some strangers who became friends, all while helping to raise their spirits and their sales, at a time they desperately needed it. And the best part, he did it all at no cost to the businesses. Fast forward a few years. The initiative that began as a way to help during the pandemic, has grown into a burgeoning business: The Best of LKN. This hyper-local media platform has created over 160 podcasts. Packed with inspirational stories and exciting adventures about all kinds of businesses— everything from beer and wine to fitness and finance, flowers, photography, even Efoil— what’s Efoil, you ask? Check out podcast number 165 at thebestoflkn.com for the answer and learn about the area’s trendiest new hot spots, businesses and even a few nonprofits you’ll surely want to support. No time to listen? The website also features blog articles that receive

thousands of views each month. The short articles are packed with easily scanned valuable information to quickly find the best places to eat, visit, explore and more, all in the Lake Norman area. What’s more, there’s an opt-in only email newsletter that reaches an evergrowing list of recipients every week. Of course, The Best of LKN also has a strong presence on both Facebook and Instagram providing easily shareable information, and continually growing The Best of LKN audience. The newest, and perhaps most challenging, component to the marketing bundle is a YouTube channel that further highlights businesses and complements the written content. It’s just getting started and is a tremendous undertaking due to the time-consumption and financial investment, but Jeff is both determined and motivated to make it a success. In addition to producing videos, Jeff also manages to schedule interviews, edit audio, research businesses, write show notes, articles, email newsletters, and social media posts. Juggling all this daily is no easy task, yet he never loses sight of what’s most important. “I take time every week to serve my sponsors who generously support the podcast and make sure that I’m attentive to their marketing and advertising needs.” And it should come as no surprise that Jeff’s vision for the future of The Best of LKN is as altruistic as its beginnings. “I’d like to focus more on new startups in the area. Small businesses that are just starting their journey, and really need to get the word out about their brand quickly. I’ve been incredibly fortunate in that I’ve connected with so many highly successful entrepreneurs and business owners during the past three years, and I’d like to pay it forward by spending more time talking to new, lesser experienced small business owners who really need the help.” Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of The Best of LKN sponsors and brand partners—more than 20 highly respected brands that serve as the best of the best in the Lake Norman area. Learn more about these pillars of the community and listen to podcasts at: www.thebestoflkn.com.

FOR YEARS I HAVE TOLD MY CLIENTS, “YOUR BODY WILL NOT DO WHAT YOUR MIND DOESN’T SAY YES TO FIRST.”

With the current world that we live in where we need to be more focused on mental toughness and emotional resilience, this statement speaks volumes.

negative, your focus shifts your attention. The way you frame your thoughts is what you manifest in your life. Your thoughts become your actions!

You will never be able to run a mile, if you tell yourself you cannot run.

If you tell yourself, don’t think about the holidays. What do you think about? The holidays.

You will never be able to deliver an impactful presentation at work, if you tell yourself you cannot speak in front of a room.

If you tell yourself, don’t think about being tired. What do you think about? How tired you are.

You will never be able to lose 10 pounds, if you tell yourself you cannot lose 10 pounds. Mindset is the key to progress in all areas of life; health, family, career, faith, wealth, etc. When it comes to breaking old habits and making healthy choices, consistently over time that lead to vibrant whole life success, you MUST start with the voice in your head! Have you ever read the famous quote by Theodore Roosevelt? “Believe you can and you are halfway there.” A very smart man, but I would argue that altering your mindset to one of BELIEF, means that you are much more than 1/2 way there. This quote fixates on the successful realization that is not only about overcoming external forces, working hard and making sacrifices. It is about overcoming the power of your own mind. If you do not believe in yourself, no one else will do it for you. Mental toughness is the first step to success! Your focus is where your attention goes. Positive or

BE CURIOUS:

IT’S GOOD FOR YOU! by JEAN MARIE JOHNSON Lately, I’ve been curious about how curiosity—“the urge to discover, to investigate, to know more”—changes as we age. So I put my curiosity to work, took a deep dive, and discovered that this “urge” is indeed good for the aging brain. In fact, being curious is linked to:

Good health and happy aging A lower chance of developing high blood pressure and diabetes Helping to maintain the health of our central nervous system The longevity of older adults

However, most studies suggest that the urge to discover, investigate, and know more declines with age as we are less motivated to seek and acquire new information, experiences and skills. This lower interest in curiosity might even accelerate cognitive decline.

P R E S E RV E A N D I M P R OV E YO U R C U R I O S I T Y First things first: as a foundation, start by eating more fruits and vegetables to improve the health of your brain. Check out the Mediterranean-DASH diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay or MIND diet, in particular (of course, pass any dietary change by your doctor, first). Then get busy cultivating the habits of a curious mind.

M I N D Y O U R M I N D . Catch yourself when you are quick to pass judgment and keep an open mind that supports curiosity. K E E P R E A D I N G . Hit a local bookstore, Goodwill and the Habitat ReStore, and browse to your heart’s content. Go without a specific plan or purpose. I have discovered numerous gems that stimulate my intellectual curiosity and motivate me to experiment more in the kitchen. I never know where my curiosity will take me or what I will come home with. TA K E A D I F F E R E N T P AT H . My car seems to always know where I want to go. That’s great but it means that I am rather brain dead en route. Instead, whether behind the wheel or on foot, take a different path. Go a different way. Pay attention to what you discover. ENGAGE IN RANDOM CONVERSATIONS WHEREVER YOU ARE. I can’t count how often my husband or I return home and say to the other: “I talked to this very interesting man today,” or “ This lady in line at the car wash told me about this amazing...” Don’t be afraid to ask questions and practice listening deeply to others. O P E N U P Y O U R W O R L D O F I N P U T. Start free subscriptions to online content about topics that are totally new to you. Your curiosity may lead to a newfound interest or passion. And speaking of passion, it’s proven that we are more curious and retain information about topics that we already have some interest in. So, you can supercharge your curiosity by asking yourself: What do I deeply desire to know at this stage in life? What interest or passion did I let slip by the wayside that I can pick up again? What specific actions can I take that will make me a lifelong student of life? What “out of my lane” activity can I pursue that would be completely new and different for me? The idea is to take a two-pronged approach: explore latent interests and try a new path. Here’s some food for thought: • Study a foreign language or a musical instrument you don’t have to become an expert. A friend taught herself enough French to be a courteous visitor in a foreign city. • Travel to an unfamiliar town or city—a day trip alone will provide new stimulation. • Learn a new skill—I love that my ever-curious husband is teaching himself how to restore an old glider! • Plant something new. There is nothing like nature to engage a curious mind. • Try out a different physical activity—I restarted my yoga practice a few years ago and now change things up by including stretching, weights, and my favorite, Pilates. The variety keeps me engaged as I learn new moves and skills. Dust off those cobwebs, get curious, be willing to explore. That’s how you’ll enjoy your curiosity journey!

Gallantry

ummer and its joys have come and gone. Vacations are memories and kids have returned to their classrooms. It may be a bittersweet time of year for many, but I, for one, can’t help getting excited for the upcoming Autumn and Winter seasons; they are my favorite seasons for style, but also bring to us a plethora of reasons to dress up…Whether for weddings, galas, holidays, or parties, numerous occasions will present you with opportunities to look your best. Speaking specifically about the more formal of these events, chances are, they will require you to wear a suit or tuxedo (or at the very least, a sportcoat). If you haven’t worn yours in a while, you may want to try it on just to make sure everything still fits. The last thing you want is to need something last-minute and be required to settle for what’s available, or worse: being and looking uncomfortable. Suits and tuxedos seem to have such a negative connotation with a multitude of men, but I cannot understand why. I’ve always wondered the reason for such an aversion to them. They’re just clothes…So long as they are made well and fit properly, there should be no discomfort in wearing a suit or tuxedo. Additionally, the amount in which they elevate your appearance is unmatched. Neither of the two has to be boring, either…a textured or patterned suit can be just as formal and professional as a solid, and a tuxedo isn’t limited to just plain black. There are plenty of ways to tastefully broaden the horizons of tailored clothing. Emphasizing the importance of make and fit in a suit, the construction and fitting patterns are key differences between a well-made suit and one where corners are cut. You have probably noticed a large cost disparity between what most department stores carry and the products hanging in specialty retailers. They may look the same on the hanger and may even have fabrics by the same mills, but they are absolutely not the same garments. The three main jacket construction types are fully canvassed, half canvassed, and fused. A fully canvassed coat features a layer of horsehair canvas between the outer fabric. This canvas is light and breathable, and has countless handsewn stitches in it to give the jacket its body, retain its shape, and create a proper drape. Horsehair also has conforming properties, so the jacket will fit better five years from now than when it is new. This is the gold-standard of jacket construction and gives the best feel on your

18 | lkn-magazine.com

shoulders. A half canvas is essentially the same as a full canvas, but the canvas itself stops at the top button of the jacket instead of extending the entire length. Fusing is the cheapest way to make a jacket. Rather than having the canvas and any stitching, everything is just glued together, creating a stiff, uncomfortable, and hot coat. Anyone can put a great fabric on top of shoddy construction. This is where the costs differentiate the most, and the reason that a good suit should be viewed as an investment. It may cost more up front, but the difference in cost is far outweighed by the additional comfort and longevity. Swing by the store sometime and I’ll be happy to further educate you and let you feel the differences. If you tried on your suit and it doesn’t fit so well anymore, or you just want to update your collection, come to Hampton’s on Main Street and let us take care of you. We have plenty in stock and endless options when it comes to custom clothing. Additionally, if you’re one of the guys who detests wearing a suit, I challenge you to put one on again. You might just find that you enjoy it…your wife won’t mind, either. If you have any questions or a topic you’d like to see addressed, please feel free to contact me at Tyler@HamptonsMens.com

PERSONAL ANNOYANCES: Debunking the Two Spaces After a Period Myth and Other Pet Peeves by QUINN BARKER

In our daily lives, we often encounter minor annoyances that, while seemingly insignificant, can irk us to no end. From small grammar mistakes to questionable etiquette, these pet peeves have a way of getting under our skin. In this article, we'll delve into one particular language-related annoyance—the infamous two spaces after a period myth—and explore other common personal annoyances that many of us can relate to. The Two Spaces After a Period Myth For decades, a hotly debated grammar rule suggested that two spaces should follow a period at the end of a sentence. This notion originated from typewriter-era conventions, where monospaced fonts created a visual imbalance between the narrow "i" and the wider "m." The extra space was meant to improve readability. However, modern typography and proportional fonts have rendered this practice obsolete. Typographical guidelines now advocate for a single space after a period, creating a more visually balanced and streamlined appearance. Despite this, some individuals still adhere to the outdated rule, leading to confusion and annoyance among those accustomed to the contemporary standard. Mixing Up "Your" and "You're" One of the most common grammatical errors that often sparks irritation is the incorrect usage of "your" and "you're." The distinction is simple: "your" indicates possession, while "you're" is a contraction of "you are." However, the two are frequently interchanged, leading to eye-rolling and frustration among grammar enthusiasts. Misusing "There," "Their," and "They're" Similar to the "your" and "you're" mix-up, the misuse of "there," "their," and "they're" is another pet peeve that frequently crops up. Each term serves a different grammatical function: "there" refers to a place or location, "their" denotes possession, and "they're" is a contraction of "they are." These distinctions are essential for clear and precise communication, making their improper use a source of annoyance for language enthusiasts.

Excessive Abbreviations in Texting and Emails In our fast-paced digital world, texting and email have become primary modes of communication. However, the increasing use of excessive abbreviations, acronyms, and Internet slang can be annoying, especially for individuals who prefer a more formal and professional tone in written correspondence. While some shorthand is acceptable in casual conversations, overuse can lead to misinterpretations and confusion. Mispronunciations and Vocal Filler Words Mispronunciations and vocal filler words can be grating for many people. Common vocal fillers like "um," "uh," "like," and "you know" can disrupt the flow of conversation and distract listeners from the intended message. Similarly, consistently mispronouncing words can be jarring, especially for those who value clear articulation and proper enunciation. Loud Phone Conversations in Public Spaces Public spaces should be zones of tranquility for everyone, but the constant chatter of loud phone conversations can be incredibly annoying. Whether on public transportation, in cafes, or waiting rooms, individuals engaged in booming phone conversations can disrupt the peace and cause frustration among those around them. In our interactions and communications, small annoyances can accumulate, affecting our mood and perception of others. From the outdated two spaces after a period myth to common grammar errors, mispronunciations, excessive abbreviations, and loud phone conversations in public, personal annoyances are an inevitable part of daily life. To foster better communication and understanding, it's essential to recognize and address these annoyances with empathy and patience. While we may not be able to control how others communicate, we can control our own reactions and strive to be mindful of the preferences and sensibilities of those around us. By acknowledging these pet peeves and seeking ways to bridge communication gaps, we can create a more harmonious and respectful environment for everyone.

CHALLENGES WITH THE MINDSET SHIFT: A COMMON EXPERIENCE FOR RETIREES b y M I K E M C G I L V A R Y, A I F ® , F I N A N C I A L A D V I S O R Our office has the privilege of not only managing client assets, but coaching folks through life milestones. I personally have met with a few of clients recently that have been experiencing what we call, “challenges with the mindset shift.” Most investors we work with invest 30 plus years to accumulate and build their family’s net worth. One of the most enjoyable aspects of our job is to help folks understand when they can retire with a high degree of probability based on their nest egg and spending habits. However, a common occurrence we see with many of our clients after this great lifeachievement, is learning how to spend their hard-earned investment portfolio. Below are the considerations we walk through with our clients to educate on this topic:

1.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G “ S U S TA I N A B L E W I T H D R A W R AT E ” Looking at a client’s liquid net-worth and other income sources come in to play here. For instance, a retired couple may have $1 million worth of investment accounts with us and spend $30k a year off the accounts including taxes due. If you perform the quick math, they are spending 3% of their nest egg with us. We help folks understand, based on this spending rate how long could the dollars last.expenses (perhaps education for your children).

spending much more (including inflation assumptions) than they currently are and how that could affect their nest-egg brings a since of clarity in many instances.

WONDER

DISCOVERING YOUR WORKING

GENIUSES by LESLIE SPEAS

The Working Genius is a model and assessment that helps individuals identify their talents and frustrations in the context of how any work gets done—and easily apply this information to be more productive and engaged. In the same way, it helps teams to be more productive and engaged by better understanding one another and leveraging the strengths and talents on the team. The Working Genius was created by Patrick Lencioni and his team at The Table Group. If you aren’t familiar with Patrick, he is probably best known for the book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. However, he has written many other books about teamwork and leadership and is well known in leadership circles. I am a bit of an assessment nerd as I love learning more about myself and others. But this is one of my favorites, so much in fact that I made the investment to become a Certified Facilitator. It is different from other assessments because it is: Easy to translate to the day-to-day experience of doing real work. Helps you quickly identify your unique talents within the context of how any type of work gets done. As much of a productivity tool as a personality model.

BEFORE WE DELVE INTO THE SIX TYPES, LET’S REVIEW A FEW DEFINITIONS: Working Geniuses are activities that bring us joy, energy, and passion. And we are usually very good at them. Working Competencies are activities that we find neither completely miserable nor completely joyful. We can do them fairly well and manage to operate in them for a while. Working Frustrations involve work that drains us of joy and energy. We usually struggle in these areas and will likely be miserable if we spend too much time doing them.

Two of our geniuses fall into each of these categories. Here are the six types.

People with the Genius of Wonder love to speculate and question. They ask questions like, “Why are things the way they are? Is there a better way?” They love to sit in the ambiguity and imagine the possibilities. People with the Genius of Wonder help create the conditions for Invention. INVENTION People with the Genius of Invention get joy from taking challenges and generating solutions. They enjoy innovating from scratch and love a blank whiteboard or piece of paper on which they can brainstorm. DISCERNMENT People with the Genius of Discernment have a natural ability to evaluate the workability of ideas. They are good curators of what’s going on around them and can recognize patterns. They know how to connect the dots and give people good feedback across a broad range of topics. GA LVA N I Z I N G People with the Genius of Galvanizing love to get things moving. They are great at pushing people out of their comfort zone and inspiring them to get started. They enjoy rallying people around an idea and getting them moving in the right direction. ENABLEMENT People with the Genius of Enablement make things happen. They know how to help, when to help, and can flex to whatever the situation calls for. People with the Genius of Enablement are people-oriented and want to help realize a vision. This genius provides the support needed to move solutions into the first stages of Implementation. TENACITY People with the Genius of Tenacity are task-oriented and love to take things across the finish line. They ensure a project is going to have the impact it’s supposed to have and lives up to agreed-upon standards. They don’t respond to the emotional appeal of the galvanizer but to the need to see the work completed. All of the types are necessary to get work done with no genius being better than another. And if you notice the order looking at the first letter of each type, they spell W I D G E T, so thinking of widgets like Legos, they build on one another. So, what do you think are your Working Geniuses, Working Competencies and Working Frustrations? You can find out for sure by taking the assessment at www.workinggenius.com. You won’t regret it as it will provide you with great insight into the work that will be most fulfilling for you, as well as what will drain you and potentially result in burnout.

W H E R E C O O L I S A H E A LT H Y O P T I O N ! by MARTIE EMORY It’s easy to see why IceBox Cryotherapy in Huntersville wants you to experience their unique version of cool! Not just for athletes and fitness buffs, cryotherapy holds benefits for everyone, and improves a variety of conditions we all face. From pain management and boosting immunity to healthier skin, athletic recovery, and overall stress relief, the results of cryotherapy can be life-enhancing. Open since late October of 2022, IceBox in Huntersville boasts a team of eight professionals, led by owners Chloe and Ryan Slattery. As a registered nurse, Chloe has practiced in surgery, sports medicine, aesthetics, and IV wellness. Ryan is a physician with Atrium Healthcare. “When I was working at a wellness center in Charlotte, I experienced the benefits of cryotherapy myself. I wanted to bring that concept to Lake Norman!” she explains. Whole body cryotherapy treatment offers a wealth of benefits, including reduced inflammation, improved circulation, stress reduction, faster recovery, better sleep, increased collagen, and pain reduction. It can adjust your attitude as well, and, yes, it releases endorphins! “Cold therapy is the best modality for quickly reducing inflammation and relieving pain from injuries, as well as accelerating muscle recovery,” Chloe adds. “All of our services at Icebox work synergistically to provide clients with maximum benefits, in a short amount of time. Localized cryotherapy is especially beneficial for smaller joints like ankles, wrists, and elbows, and we always recommend localized cryotherapy used in conjunction with whole body cryotherapy to get the best results.” Compression therapy is also a popular option to

36

boost circulation, and speed up muscle recovery— by helping the body remove lactic acid and other toxins faster. Compression therapy can typically be used safely in people with vein issues, but if someone has had a blood clot in the last year, it’s recommended they check with their doctor before having a treatment. If you’re more focused on skincare, every smiling face can benefit from Cryofacials at IceBox. “We offer a signature Cryofacial that uses our innovative cooling technology to reduce inflammation and stimulate collagen, along with a hydrating lymphatic drainage massage,” explains Chloe. “We also offer six specialty facials that target various issues—from acne to aging—with our cold technology. We even have a special facial just for men!”

Chloe says another misconception is expecting a hefty price tag. “People think Cryotherapy is going to be very expensive, and clients are shocked when we tell them a one-time treatment is $40.00, and our monthly packages can bring the cost down to as low as $6.00 per session.” With three membership levels, IceBox offers a variety of monthly packages, as well as á la carte services. Monthly packages start at $69/month and go up to $189/month for unlimited Cryotherapy sessions and eight compressions. With their Enhanced Services, you can take your Icebox visit to the next level with Localized Cryotherapy, Red Light Treatment, and Compression Therapy.

If the idea of a “chilly experience” is holding you back, the dedicated team at IceBox can quickly calm your fears, and answer any questions. They love to educate new clients and dispel any misconceptions! “We calm fears and make cryotherapy fun for people by taking the time to educate them,” says Chloe. “IceBox provides a relaxing, upbeat atmosphere, and lets you choose the music and light colors for your session. Our staff is always right outside the door, the entire time you’re in the Icebox, so you’re never by yourself. Also, our machine fits two people—so you can go in with a friend or partner if that helps!” The biggest misconception about Cryotherapy treatment is that it’s only for hard-core athletes and bodybuilders. While Cryotherapy is best-known for accelerating recovery and relieving pain, it can also improve sleep and lower stress levels, so truly anyone can benefit!

Take another look at all those healthy benefits, and you’ll see where IceBox can fit into your lifestyle, delivering excellent results! IceBox is located in Birkdale Village at 16735 Cranlyn Road, Building 2C, Suite D, in Huntersville, 704-237-4395. Hours are Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., and Friday through Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Email lakenorman@iceboxtherapy.com for more information, book online at iceboxtherapy. com, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram @icebox_lakenorman.

5-STEP C LO S E T E D I T

SYSTEM by SABINA KAHN How often do you find yourself standing in front of your full closet and not knowing what to wear? As the fall season draws near, it's a great opportunity to review your wardrobe and consider how each clothing item fits your personal style to decide if it's really needed. I’m happy to share my proven 5-step closet edit, which successfully guided clients worldwide in gaining a deeper understanding of their clothing collections. Through this process, you'll determine which pieces are worth keeping and which ones should leave your wardrobe. Implementing a systematic approach to your closet not only simplifies the process of getting ready in the mornings, but also serves as an effective means of controlling impulsive purchases. By bringing order and purpose to your wardrobe, you'll be better equipped to make intentional choices that reflect your true style and fashion preferences. So, let's get started on improving your wardrobe and feeling great as we approach the fall season! First, let's explore the process of defining your unique style. H OW TO D E F I N E YO U R S T Y L E ? Take the time to deeply analyze your lifestyle and daily activities, including work, social events, family gatherings, and more. Understanding the places you frequently visit and the people you interact with will help you align your wardrobe with your unique lifestyle. Visualize your "ideal self"—what image do you wish to project? How would you like others to see you? This step involves asking yourself questions about your preferred silhouettes, colors, patterns, as well as considering your comfort and confidence levels in different clothing styles. Armed with these insights, start going through your wardrobe using my 5-step closet edit. EACH GARMENT SHOULD FULFILL THESE FIVE REQUIREMENTS: 1 . Does it fit your present body shape and size, not the person you once were or aim to become?

2 . Does this clothing piece look outdated? 3 . Does it show signs of wear or aging? 4. Do you love this piece? An emotional connection with your clothes adds a special touch to your outfits and boosts your confidence when wearing them. 5 . Does it match your lifestyle? Evaluate if the piece connects with your personal style and evokes positive feelings. After evaluating each item, categorize them into 3 groups: keep, sell/donate and tailor. The "keep" category consists of pieces that meet the five requirements and align with your style. Clothing that no longer fits or aligns with your preferences can be donated to those in need or sold through theRealReal, Poshmark, ThredUP, EBay, etc. In the "tailor" category, place the clothes that meet the five requirements but might need some adjustments. N E X T S T E P : O R G A N I Z E & C U R AT E . Once you've determined which items to keep, it's time to organize your closet effectively. Arrange your clothing based on categories, such as tops, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear, to create a visually appealing and accessible wardrobe. Curate your closet by color-coordinating or arranging items by season, making it easier to select outfits for specific occasions. This outcome paves the way for a shopping strategy: Avoid impulsive purchases and build a sustainable wardrobe by establishing a shopping strategy. Before buying new clothing, assess whether the item meets the five requirements and complements your existing wardrobe. Invest in quality pieces that align with your style and fill any wardrobe gaps thoughtfully. The result of my collaborative closet review with clients, along with the information I've previously shared, is intended to provide them with an awareness of their distinct style and a comprehension of their wardrobe. Simultaneously, I demonstrate the skill of coordinating various clothing items, involving the creation of multiple outfits that resonate with their individual style. I offer them images of the outfits we've put together, in addition to tailored suggestions on addressing wardrobe gaps (what to buy and where) to enrich their collection with items that smoothly blend with their existing pieces, ultimately maximizing their investment.

EXPLORING FALL TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD When it comes to celebrating fall, many of our traditions center around Halloween, or the change of seasons. However, this is not the case in many other areas of the world. All over, countless other unique fall traditions take place. Interested in learning more about how other parts of the world enjoy our beloved pumpkin-centered season? Read on for seven different worldly autumn customs. 1. China In areas of China, residents enjoy taking part in the “Yulin Festival,” which translates to the “Hungry Ghost Festival” in English. This festival is based on the idea ghosts roam the land on the fifteenth day of the 7th month on the Lunar calendar. These spirits are searching for food and money. One activity many enjoy doing is burning paper offerings, as well as leaving food outside of the doors to please the spirits. Another spooky tradition is to completely avoid taking pictures during this time, as many testify ghostly images will appear on film during this time. 2. United Kingdom In the U.K., another fall tradition is taking place. This event takes place on November 5th. On this day, also titled “Guy Fawkes Day,” residents celebrate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. This was when fourteen people were plotting to blow up the House of Lords at the State Opening of Parliament. Celebrations on this day include lighting huge bonfires, setting off fireworks, and savoring traditional meaty foods, like meaty sausages topped with fried onions, mustard and ketchup. 3. Mexico While many have heard about the “Dia de los Muertos,” or “Day of the Dead,” few heard another distinctive activity which precedes this celebration in Mexico. Every November, expansive forests, which spread across the Mexican states of Michoacan and Estado de México, are covered in fluttering wings of black, white, and orange butterflies. According to the article, “The Monarch Butterfly Migration Turns This Mexican Forest Orange Every Fall,” by Travel and Leisure, “monarch butterflies fly around 2,800 miles from Canada and the United States to spend the coldest months of the year in warmer lands.” Since the arrival of the butterflies coincides with the beginning of “Dia de los Muertos,” many believe the monarch’s arrival signifies the return of the souls of their dead ancestors. 4. Germany The beloved Oktoberfest is a German festival many also know about. However, the beginning of October in Berlin is also the largest national holiday in Germany—the celebration of the reunification of East and West Germany after the falling of the

46 | lkn-magazine.com

Berlin Wall. On October 3rd, residents celebrate this day of unity by hosting a huge city-wide festival in Berlin. Parades, open-air concerts, family-fun activities, and history exhibits take place along what remains of the Berlin Wall. 5. Ireland In Ireland, the Irish celebrate Samhain, which many believe is the root of Halloween. This ancient Celtic celebration includes bonfires, festivals and even a delicious fruitcake known as Barmback. Slicing into this cake, one will find tokens, meant to signify wishes for marriage and wealth. According to the Times article, “What Is Samhain? What to Know About the Ancient Pagan Festival That Came Before Halloween,” during this holiday, “ghosts of the dead and spirits from the Otherworld were also thought to return to the earth.” To appease them, often “sacrifices—generally of crops and animals—were burned in bonfires.” 6. Ghana In the Volta region of Ghana, residents celebrate a specific crop which has helped many throughout the years. The Festival of Yams, also known as Asogli Te Za, takes place every September, and holds deep religious and economic meaning for the Ghanaian people. Having a strong yam harvest would signify a productive year for many residents. The festival’s religion would also include activities to thank ancestors and gods for this fruitful harvest. 7. Italy In Italy, another celebration honors the souls of loved ones who have passed on. During Ognissanti, Italians decorate cemeteries with flowers and red candles, paying homage to the deceased. Families unite over delicious meals, leaving an empty plate and seat at the table for their loved one, expecting their soul may join them for dinner. Each region of Italy has a different take on the holiday. For example, in Sicily, many believe well behaved children will receive gifts from their deceased family members. Whereas in Abruzzo and Trentino, it is a tradition to carve pumpkins, place candles inside of them, then use them as lanterns. Finally, in Tuscany, children wear necklaces made of apples and roasted chestnuts.

EVERYDAY ENERGY TAKERS AND ENERGY GIVERS: HOW TO RECLAIM YOUR VITALITY by QUINN BARKER

IN OUR FAST-PACED MODERN WORLD, IT’S NO SECRET THAT OUR ENERGY LEVELS CAN OFTEN FEEL LIKE A PRECIOUS RESOURCE, CONSTANTLY BEING DEPLETED BY VARIOUS FACTORS. We’ve all experienced days when we feel completely drained, struggling to muster even the simplest tasks. On the other hand, some days, we find ourselves brimming with vitality and enthusiasm. Understanding the concept of “energy takers” and “energy givers” can help us navigate our lives more consciously and maintain a healthy balance. It’s time, LKN readers, to discover some of the everyday energy takers and energy givers and how we can reclaim our vitality. E N E R G Y TA K E R S :

ENERGY GIVERS:

Digital Devices: Our increasing reliance on smartphones, laptops, and other digital devices can significantly drain our energy. The constant notifications, social media feeds, and screen time can lead to information overload and decreased productivity. Setting boundaries on device usage and unplugging regularly can help mitigate their energy-draining effects.

Physical Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity, whether it’s going to the gym, practicing yoga, or simply going for a walk, releases endorphins and boosts energy levels.

Negative People: We’ve all encountered people who leave us feeling emotionally drained after interactions. Negative individuals, complainers, and energy vampires can sap our positivity and enthusiasm. It’s essential to identify such relationships and limit our exposure to them, seeking out positive and uplifting connections instead. Stress and Anxiety: The demands of modern life often lead to stress and anxiety, taking a toll on our energy levels. Chronic stress can lead to burnout, fatigue, and even physical health problems. Engaging in stress-reducing practices like meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature can help combat these energy takers. Poor Sleep: Insufficient or poor-quality sleep is one of the most significant energy takers. It affects our cognitive function, mood, and overall well-being. Establishing a consistent sleep routine, creating a calming bedtime ritual, and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment can improve sleep quality. Unhealthy Diet: The food we eat plays a crucial role in our energy levels. A diet high in processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats can lead to energy crashes and sluggishness. Opting for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide sustained energy throughout the day. Sedentary Lifestyle: Spending long hours sitting at a desk or on the couch can leave us feeling lethargic and unmotivated. Regular physical activity, even in the form of short breaks or walks, can boost energy and improve overall health.

Meaningful Connections: Spending time with loved ones and nurturing positive relationships can fill us with positive energy and a sense of belonging. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practicing mindfulness and meditation can reduce stress, improve focus, and increase our overall energy reserves. Adequate Sleep: Prioritizing sleep and ensuring we get enough restorative rest helps us wake up refreshed and energized. Nutritious Foods: Eating a balanced diet, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole foods, provides the necessary nutrients to sustain energy levels. Time in Nature: Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can rejuvenate our minds and bodies.

R E C L A I M I N G Y O U R V I TA L I T Y : Identify Energy Drains: Reflect on your daily life and identify the energy takers that leave you feeling depleted. Once recognized, take steps to minimize their impact on your life. Create Boundaries: Establish boundaries with technology, negative people, and stressful situations. Learn to say no to commitments that drain your energy excessively. Practice Self-Care: Make self-care a priority by engaging in activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Move Regularly: Incorporate physical activity into your routine, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day. Movement helps boost energy levels and overall well-being. Prioritize Sleep: Set a consistent sleep schedule and create a calming bedtime routine to ensure quality rest. Cultivate Positive Relationships: Surround yourself with supportive and uplifting individuals who contribute positively to your life. Understanding the concept of energy takers and energy givers can empower us to make conscious choices that improve our overall vitality and well-being. By reducing the impact of energy-draining factors and incorporating energy-giving practices into our lives, we can reclaim our energy and thrive in the midst of life’s demands.

PULLED PORK FROM THE SMOKER by TA N N E R J O H N S O N When September rolls in there’s one thing that’s on my mind constantly—football season. For this month I wanted to share my absolute favorite tailgate recipe: pulled pork in the smoker! This is a crowd pleaser, will feed a lot of mouths and is so simple—set it and forget it! All you need for this is your favorite BBQ rub, some mustard and a bonein pork shoulder (you can almost always find these at any grocery store for around $10-15 depending on size). A good rule of thumb with pulled pork is usually around 1/3 lb per person. So a 10 lb shoulder will easily feed around 15 people, you lose about half of the weight of the meat once it’s cooked and pulled. A lot of my recipes you can do on any kind of cooking utensil, but for this one you have to do this on a smoker (pellet, traditional, or even a charcoal kettle grill). P R E P A R E Y O U R S M O K E R : Preheat your smoker to 250-275 (you can even go 225 if you want it to take a little longer). With pork I usually run some basic hickory pellets, but any will be fine. If you’re doing this on charcoal, definitely add some hickory wood chunks. P O R K S H O U L D E R P R E P : While the smoker gets up to temp, get your pork butt out and score the fat cap (optional) and remove any excess fat that’s hanging off that could get burned up during the cook. Next, lather it down with some yellow mustard for a binder, to help the seasoning adhere quickly. Then season all over with your favorite BBQ rub. Don’t be shy with the seasoning on this—you want it covered. My favorite for this is Meat Church’s Honey Hog Hot. Let the seasoning adhere and “sweat” out on the pork for 20-30 minutes before you put it on the smoker. S M O K I N G T H E M E AT : Now you’re ready to throw the pork shoulder/butt on the pit! Get it on and if you prefer, insert a temperature probe so you can keep track of the temps and have a good idea of when you’ll be ready to serve. Once it’s in there for about an hour and a half, and you start to see some bark forming on the meat, you’ll want to spritz it. I

use Meat Sweats Hog Wash, it’s a great pre-packaged spritz made locally here in North Carolina. But you can also spritz with Apple Cider Vinegar, or even apple juice. After your first spritz, you’ll want to keep spritzing it every hour or so. Once you start to get a really dark mahogany looking color on the butt, you’ll want to keep checking your internal temps. Once we get to 165 internal, we’re at the point where we can wrap it up in aluminum foil, or put it in an aluminum steam pan. I prefer the pan, so all the juices coming out of it stay in the pan and keep everything super moist and tender. You can cover the top of the pan with some aluminum foil and it’ll help speed up the cook. Let it ride in the smoker until you get to 203-205 internal. That is when you can pull it off the smoker. There’s no exact time you can predict for this big cut of meat, but typically it’s somewhere around an hour per pound. So a 10 lb butt can take at least 10 hours to fully cook, sometimes even longer. R E S T I N G A N D S H R E D D I N G : Lastly, once you pull the pork butt/ shoulder off of the smoker, you have to let it rest for at least 30 minutes, or even an hour if you’ve got time. Resting a large cut of meat like this allows all of the juices to redistribute around and makes it extremely tender and flavorful. After the rest period, pull it out of the aluminum pan and pull the bone out (it should pull out with no resistance) and just shred it up with your hands (or some bbq claws) you can then pour the juices from the bottom of the pan all over the pulled pork for even more flavor!

Brian also hails from a farming family in Lincolnton, surrounded by apple orchards, which meant time wellspent harvesting apples and apple cider each year. “My favorite memories as a child were helping my grandmother make apple cider,” tells Brian. “We raised livestock, and I spent my time in the fall and winter helping my dad sell pumpkins, Christmas trees, and wreaths. AGING: FRESH LESSONS IN ADAPTABILITY & RESILIENCE by JEAN MARIE JOHNSON

It was the evening of Good Friday. I spent the dark, still hours of the night with intermittent pain. I couldn’t tell what it was. Probably indigestion, I decided. By 8 am I’d had enough and reached out to the on-call triage nurse who didn’t miss a beat. In short order I was on a stretcher, in the back of an ambulance, headed to the ER. It was a long day, followed a week or so later by heart scans and an endoscopy. This was foreign territory for me as I was experiencing myself in a deeply unfamiliar way. Thankfully, the results confirmed that everything was fine for now. Then my teeth started acting up. My teeth? They’ve always been the envy of my family and high on the coveted low maintenance list. Two crowns, three fillings, and an intricate root canal later, I am thinking back on this curious health adventure. Was it simply coincidence that my health took a hit a mere nine days after retiring? A joke the universe was playing on me lest I get too cocky? Was it my body giving in to something long-held and pent up that I will never understand? Or maybe it was just the physical changes of aging coming to call. I continue to have more questions than answers. Nonetheless, my experience was a timely reminder that the need for adaptability and resilience accompanies the entire cycle of life. Aging, in my book, is right up there with adolescence when it comes to the need to adapt and to develop resilience. Our culture doesn’t frame it that way. Instead, we are bombarded with images of aging that are hyper-idealized or uber somber. As if there are only two ways to age. I’m not falling for that. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, and the key is anticipating that we will change and that life will continue to change around us. Knowing this, we can stop resisting and start preparing ourselves for the journey ahead. K E Y A G I N G R E L AT E D C H A N G E S Physical You don’t have to be wheeled into the ER to recognize how your body has changed. Scroll through your old photos and you’ll easily recognize

54 | lkn-magazine.com

that it didn’t happen overnight; it’s been a continuous process. The place between resisting these changes and totaling giving into them is called adapting—that’s worth reaching for. Instead of running, maybe you’re walking, and adding in some balance work and light weightlifting. The point is to care enough about yourself to make the most of the physical body you are in right now. Emotional By the time we are sixty, we’ve accumulated a wealth of experiences that are loaded with personal meaning. Some of them are associated with feelings of loss, grief, sorrow and loneliness. Maybe you are a caregiver and experiencing overwhelm. Know that you are not alone, so be gentle with yourself and seek out ways to work with these feelings. Connect with your doctor, or a therapist. Talk with a trusted friend or family member who won’t judge you. Or put yourself out there a bit more to expand your sense of community and belonging. Social Maybe you’ve retired and have lost contact with those work friends who helped get you through the week. Even if you’ve relocated to a great new community of your choice, you will still need to begin anew in terms of making friends and being connected. Reach out. Seek others with shared interests or extend your heart and your experience to others by volunteering. Loss and Letting Go of the Known The changes that occur as we age revolve around two things: adapting to loss and letting go of what was, what we have known. While this is true of the entire cycle of life, it is particularly so as we age. By accepting the inevitability of change—whether it’s physical, emotional, social, or all three—we can begin to build our change resilience muscle for the journey ahead. Stay tuned for Part Two of this article: “Tips on Navigating Change as We Age” coming in the October issue.

24/SEVEN MARRIAGE

THE DANCE: BEHAVIOR IS A LANGUAGE b y J AV I E R & S H A N N A N L A B R A D O R

AS I LAY THERE ON MY BACK JUST BARELY ABLE TO OPEN MY EYES, THE SOUNDTRACK FROM DIRTY DANCING WAS PLAYING…“NOW I HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE…” I HAD NO IDEA WHERE I WAS OR WHY PEOPLE WERE CALLING OUT MY NAME. As my eyes fully opened I could not see at first, then slowly my vision returned yet everything was spinning, and I knew what happened was not “the time of my life!” A few minutes earlier, I was dancing at a wedding while enjoying a beautiful evening, and the last thing I remember was leaping into the arms of the groom, who in his not so sober state, dropped me straight onto the concrete knocking me unconscious. Yes, I can hear you asking the question, “Why did you jump into the groom’s arms?” I have a great answer… I have no idea! It was an emotional moment of joy and excitement as the last song played, and he was about to begin his new life. My behavior was a language, telling him I love you and can’t wait to see all God has for you in the future. In hindsight, my fiftyyear-old self should not have been leaping into the arms of a young man, who had no idea he was supposed to raise me into the air as we reenacted the iconic Dirty Dancing lift! Whether we are aware of it or not, our actions, reactions, and interactions are a language that set the direction, tone, and rhythm of our marriage. Behavior is a language. Welcome to the not-so-always beautiful dance of behavior in our marriages. We tend to think that how we communicate and respond is through our words, yet I would argue that our behavior in marriage is a language that can speak louder than words. Picture this: you come home after a long day at work, and your spouse greets you with a warm smile and a hug. Instantly, your mood lifts, and you feel appreciated and loved. On another day, your spouse barely acknowledges your arrival, and you find yourself feeling neglected and unimportant. These scenarios demonstrate the immense power of behavior in influencing our emotional well-being and marital satisfaction. In a marriage, every action and reaction, both big and small, send messages to your spouse.

I can turn my back on my spouse and, what she “hears” and feels is you’re not important enough for me to stand here and listen. If you spend days ignoring your spouse after an argument and physically removing yourself from their presence, then you are telling them through your behavior, that I will not fight for you, you’re on your own. Silence will kill a marriage. Our behavior communicates love, respect, understanding, and empathy—or, conversely, neglect, frustration, anger, and indifference. So it’s crucial to be mindful of how our behavior impacts our spouse and our marriage as a whole. In a marriage, behavior being a language is not uncommon. We can easily fall into negative behavior patterns, where your spouse’s actions trigger negative reactions from you and vice versa. To build a healthier and more fulfilling relationship, we must break free from these destructive behaviors. Here are some ways to do just that: 1. Communication is Key: Use your words! 90% of the couples I work with have not talked about the issue they are facing. One of the predictors of a marriage in trouble is a lack of or nonexistent communication. If you become silent, then you allow bitterness and resentment to take hold and strangle the life of your marriage.

As I bring this horse into the barn, allow me to address our individual behavior. It’s essential to recognize that individual behavior not only influences marriage but is also shaped by it. Our personal experiences and family of origin have a profound impact on how we interact with our spouses. For instance, if one partner grew up in a household where conflict was avoided at all costs, they may struggle to address issues directly in their marriage. If you take time to understand the role of individual behavior, it can foster empathy and patience in a marriage. Instead of criticizing our spouse’s actions, we can take a step back and recognize that their behavior is a product of their life experiences. When you do this it will build emotional intimacy, trust, and vulnerability. Or, you can stonewall, criticize, fold your arms, and walk away. What will you choose? Remember, that every day presents an opportunity to strengthen your marriage. Just like when dancing, your actions can be in step with your spouse, or your behaviors can leave you laying on your back wondering what happened. Behavior is a language, and I hope you enter into a beautiful dance of healthy behaviors that leave you saying “I had the time of my life!” Happy dancing!

2. Practice Empathy: When words are nonexistent, look past the problem and see the person.Try to understand their feelings and actions, then move towards them and invite them to open up. You can react to them being closed off or seek to understand and find an open door of connection. 3. Celebrate the Good: If you see your spouse expressing positive behavior and communicating well, celebrate them! Thank your spouse for communicating with you and acknowledge their efforts.

SAVOR SUMMER SIPPABLES SANS ALCOHOL (Or With) b y S U S A N B OYO U N G B A I L E Y S C H A B AC K E R Though it’s one of the hottest months of the year, stay cool and hydrated. Sip and savor simply splendid summertime beverages. Whatever your reasons for substituting alcoholic sippables, options are limitless. If your goal is to cut back on alcohol or cut it out entirely, head into the kitchen or bar and get creative with these cool concoctions. C O L O R F U L LY L AY E R E D M O C K + C O C K TA I L S Goal? Separate each liquid, without blending the colors. Key to color separation control? Pour both slowly and gently. When layering liquids creating a color gradient, start with heavier ingredients on the bottom and add lighter ones on top. Gravity wins with this general physics rule of weight in mind. Layering different densities is a process that takes both practice and patience. You’ll also benefit from a steady hand and tools to gain more control separating colors of liquid ingredients. A bar spoon is ideal, but a regular tablespoon will do the trick. To build color layers and “float” each new ingredient on top of the one below, touch the tip of the spoon to the side of the glass just above the previous ingredient, angle downwards, and slowly pour the next ingredient over the spoon and down the side of the glass. Take it up a notch using a food-grade syringe, which may be more precise. G E T G O R G E O U S G A R N I S H E S with fruit, flowers, and herbs: Try the kabob effect, skewering a toothpick with the garnishes and add a mini

decorative parasol umbrella. You can also insert a colorful or bamboo straw. Rim your glasses (wet first for sticking power) with salt or sugar. Pretty in pink is Himalayan pink salt, or blend white sea salt with any colorful spices like paprika, cayenne, turmeric, spirulina, or matcha tea. And coconut flakes are always a nice tropical touch. • Fruit Garnishes: K.I.S.S (Keep it simple sweetie) with a slice of fruit or piece of zest, or combine a fruitacopia approach. For citrus, try a round, wedge, or spiral of zest. Berries can be dropped in or added to a toothpick. Pineapple, kiwi, mango slices, and maraschino cherries pair well for tropical drinks. • Flower Garnishes: Beautiful blooms utilized as garnishes can beautify your beverages and also add to complement other dishes. Try these beautiful blooms, whether fresh or dried: roses, lavender, hibiscus, violas, pansies, marigolds, nasturtium, and chamomile. • Herb Garnishes: Head to your local farmers market, or better yet, grow a collection of herbs in your garden or indoor pots by your kitchen window. Some easy-to-grow favorite herb garnishes include: mint, basil, lavender, thyme, and rosemary. S E R V E S T Y L I S H S I P P A B L E S I N A C L A S S I C C O C K TA I L G L A S S such as highball or margarita glass, or try a hurricane glass or mason jar (also personalizable and decoratable). Or, for a multitude of guests, serve in garnishable pitchers. Cool off this hot summer and stay hydrated. Whether you’re at work or on vacation, treat and transport your senses, as you savor these summer sippables.Happy summer and happy sipping!

YOUR HAPPY RETIREMENT Remember that Beatles song “Can’t Buy Me Love?” It’s now playing from the radio station archives of my mind. And you know, there’s something else you can’t just buy: happiness. For retirees, money is certainly a ticket to comfort, pleasure, novelty and distraction, but happiness? No matter how you slice it, that’s another matter. If a happy retirement is your desired location, read on...

Check Your Attitude Optimism contributes to greater life expectancy, lower cardiovascular disease and other chronic health conditions. If that isn’t reason enough to work on your attitude, then how about the simple fact that negativity is simply a downer—for you and for those around you. If you are inclined to see the downside in situations and possibilities, stop feeding the tendency. Instead, google “optimism” and snag some helpful tips on how to cultivate it. Case in point: be sure to notice and acknowledge good things when they happen. Make Health and Wellness Your Priority If not now, when? A lifetime of work and family-related busyness may have stood in the way of prioritizing how and what you ate, and how well you slept, while your fitness took a back seat to everything else. I get it. But now, you can bump your health and wellness to the top of the list. Start with being optimistic, talk to friends who are already making this shift, check out the mostly-free health and exercise options at the local Y and other facilities. And while you are googling, try a search such as ‘how to eat healthy in retirement,” then start to make small changes that make a difference. Now you have something new and tangible to notice and acknowledge! Claim Your Purpose for this Life Stage Your family and your career may have been at the core of your sense of purpose. At this stage, you have a new opportunity/ challenge: defining what will make this stage meaningful to you. Studies show that the novelty of doing whatever you want whenever you want after you’ve signed off from the old 9 to 5 dissipates. Because pleasure, at any life stage, is never enough in itself. Humans crave meaning and purpose. I am inspired by my husband who has picked up the brush again and paints and exhibits with passion; by my nearly 80-year-old friend who still runs her antique clothing business; by my deeply wise and

62 | lkn-magazine.com

spiritual friend who is writing a book from her collection of wellfollowed blogs. Who inspires you? What’s calling you? Take a step in that direction and see where it leads. Stay Connected—Even if You are an Introvert Isolation wreaks havoc on us—physically and emotionally. Humans thrive on connection with others. The good news (optimism, you see?) is that you can connect on your own terms. My extroverted friends have a full dance card, while those inclined toward introversion create a balance of engagement and personal time. The “formula” is whatever works for you: virtual and in real time. Reach out to old friends, drive over to the local library, visit the senior center. You don’t have to commit; just watch and see what clicks. Right now, my calendar says: Zoom call with book writing friend tomorrow; yoga and pizza with exercise friend on Friday. Use Your Brain! Never, ever stop learning. You can prevent cognitive decline by keeping your mind active with new stimulation - not the same old stuff. Check out The National Institute of Aging website or AARP for ideas; or simply do (yet another) google search. Many of the brain-enriching activities you’ll find are both stimulating and fun! A shout out to my friend who has spent the past six months teaching herself conversational French for an upcoming sojourn to Quebec City! Practice Gratitude And while you are busy jump-starting or reigniting your retirement happiness, take that all-important pause to simmer in gratitude for all that you are, all that you have, all that you are giving. The simple but profound practice of gratitude increases soul satisfaction and decreases the desire for materialistic gratification. You read that right. Thanks mom, for living this one, 100%!

NOW, THAT’S SMART! I’ve been called a smart aleck, a smart guy, a smarty pants and even a smart ass. I’ve been told I look smart in a suit, I guess that was a smart choice I made. I ate “Smarties” as a kid, they were one of my favorite candies, and have yelled out “that smarts” when I’ve hurt myself. That was usually the result of a not so smart choice. There are smart cars, smart starts and smart moves…which aren’t so smart, like when someone cuts you off while you’re driving and you blurt out, “smart move!” A lot of people equate intelligence with being smart, I beg to differ, they’re not at all the same thing. Some people are book smart. They are college educated and possess one or more degrees. They like to read a lot and keep up on world and social issues through magazines, books and the internet. On the other hand, there are some people who are street smart. They received their education from the school of hard knocks. They learned most of their lessons from life experiences, a lot of them negative. They are survivors. Yet another group of smart people aren’t formally educated or street-wise, they just exhibit exceptionally good common sense. They have the innate ability to look at life’s obstacles, remove emotion and make sound, reasonable decisions. We’ve all known people who are book smart, but lack street smarts, brilliant, but can’t find the bus stop. Or, the street savvy people who seem to know all the ins and outs, but make bad choices anyway, because they have no plain common sense. Is one better than the other? Perhaps, if what you want to do with your life dictates a particular course of study or apprenticeship in order to get there. Ideally, for most of us, the smart thing to do is to find a personal, workable balance of all three. Some people think it’s uncool to be smart, which begins early with the kids who are too cool for school. Hopefully, you’ll avoid the people that think they are smart, but don’t have any real smarts. Some of the negative traits these people commonly possess are ignorance, jealousy and prejudice, and it is usually very smart to avoid these people. Truly smart people are generally open minded, calm, flexible and

aware. They aren’t afraid to ask questions when they don’t know the answer, they have the confidence to push aside their ego and admit they don’t know something. They understand the value of healthy personal and professional relationships and do their best to nurture those relationships. Choose to surround yourself with good people, develop healthy relationships and make good choices and you will build a strong foundation for a wonderful life. Ignorance is not bliss. Smart people read books, articles and magazines to find out what’s going on in the world, so they can have informed opinions and interesting viewpoints when they get into discussions. Explore new places and experience new things so that you can begin to understand and appreciate the different issues and challenges that we and other cultures face. Be observant, become aware of everything that’s going on around you. Everywhere you go and in everything you do, really pay attention. You’ll be surprised at what you notice and more surprised at what you’ve been missing. Here’s an exercise that will demonstrate my point and is a lot of fun. Take a walk around your neighborhood. Make it a point to walk slower than you usually would and to notice one hundred things that you haven’t noticed in the past. Take your kids and make it a game. It’s amazing what we miss seeing. You’ll notice people, places, things in nature and manmade things you’ve never seen before, right in your own neighborhood. One hundred sounds like a lot, but you’ll be surprised how quickly you get there and probably notice quite a bit more. You’ll all have fun and learn a lot at the same time. You and your kids will learn that learning by observing is fun. Education can be fun! Make the choice to become educated on many different levels. The ability to make intelligent, informed decisions comes from being smart enough to know what you don’t know and unafraid to admit it, especially to yourself. The important thing is to find balance and harmony within yourself and make the commitment to become your best friend. This will help you improve your ability to make smart choices and to find contentment in your life, and there’s a lot to be said for contentment. Read, explore and observe. Doing so will give you the knowledge, experience and tools to adapt to multiple life situations and will enable you to make smart decisions, develop wonderful, healthy relationships and have a good life. Now, that’s smart!

THE SALVATION ARMY OF GASTON AND LINCOLN COUNTY

SERVING WITH LOVE by MARTIE EMORY Known and respected as a true refuge for people in times of need, The Salvation Army has served the Gaston and Lincoln county area since 1921. Just last year, they assisted over 300 families with toys for Christmas and 12,763 people overall—and Major David Phelps and his wife, Major Amber Phelps, are beyond grateful for those who support The Salvation Army. “Due to your love and generosity, we are able to assist individuals and families across the Carolinas who come to us in need,” he explains. “Whether it be shelter, nourishment, empowering our youth, or spiritual support, The Salvation Army is always there.”

T H E S A L V AT I O N A R M Y O F G A S T O N A N D L I N C O L N C O U N T Y

The fall season—especially October— becomes a busy time at The Salvation Army, as Major Amber begins the process of applications for Christmas assistance via an online site, for anyone who is eligible. The Gaston/Lincoln county group also assists seniors during the holiday season (about 60 seniors were served last year) with clothing and household items. “Our Angel Trees are also set up in Walmart stores across Gaston and Lincoln county for people to purchase new, unwrapped toys that we match with the families that have requested holiday assistance,” says David. “As always, our Red Kettles are manned by both paid employees and volunteers—from the Friday after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve, and we have various groups that volunteer by scheduling a time with our administrative assistant, David Hansell.”

development, education, career development, health and life skills, sports, fitness, and a spiritual foundation. Major David Phelps was commissioned and ordained as a Salvation Army officer in 2001, and his wife, Amber, was commissioned and ordained in 2002. Both are thankful for the generosity that makes their programs and services even possible, and grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in countless lives throughout Gaston and Lincoln county. When donating to The Salvation Army, remember your gift serves people in your community. Donations can be accepted online at SalvationArmyGastonLincoln.org, or by mail to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 11209, Charlotte, NC 28220. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities, call 704-867-6145. The Boys & Girls Club is located at 715 N. Main Street, Lowell, NC, 704-824-4773.

But reaching far beyond the holidays, the Center of Hope, located at 107 S. Broad Street in downtown Gastonia, houses an emergency shelter for families, as well as single men and women. A clothing closet is open every Tuesday and Thursday for those who need clothing items, and food is distributed on Tuesday and Thursday via a drive-thru food pantry at the Broad St. location. (Food is distributed to an individual only once a month, and does require a name and address.) For clothing donations, items for all seasons can also be dropped off at the Center of Hope. David also proudly shares the goals of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs—also a trusted resource in the community. “Our Boys & Girls Club has a two-fold approach to help youth achieve academically, and to give them tools from a Christian worldview to help them today, and in the future,” he explains. “The Salvation Army is an international movement and is part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible, our ministry is motivated by the love of God, and the mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, while meeting human needs in His name, without discrimination.” The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Lowell offers a safe place to learn and grow into productive citizens through character and leadership

FUN AND EASY DIY YARD PROJECTS TO T R A N S F O R M YO U R O U T D O O R S PAC E by QUINN BARKER Are you looking to spruce up your outdoor space and create a charming haven right in your own backyard? DIY yard projects offer a fantastic opportunity to unleash your creativity and add a personal touch to your outdoor oasis. Let’s explore a few fun and easy DIY projects that will not only beautify your yard but also provide endless enjoyment for you, your family, and your friends.

B U I L D A B A C K YA R D MOVIE SCREEN

BU I L D A V E R T I C A L H E R B GA R D E N

If you're short on space or want to add some greenery to your patio or balcony, a vertical herb garden is the perfect solution. Using a wooden pallet, attach small planters or repurposed containers to its slats. Fill them with a well-draining soil mix and plant your favorite herbs. Hang the pallet vertically on a sturdy wall or fence, ensuring it receives adequate sunlight. Not only will you have fresh herbs at your fingertips for cooking, but the vertical garden will also serve as a beautiful and functional decoration.

Turn your backyard into an outdoor theater by creating a DIY movie screen. Start by selecting a suitable spot, such as a flat wall or a white sheet stretched between trees. If using a sheet, secure it with clothespins or hooks. Set up a projector and connect it to a laptop or DVD player. Arrange seating with blankets, cushions, or outdoor chairs. Don't forget to create a cozy ambiance with string lights or lanterns. Enjoy memorable movie nights under the stars with family and friends.

CONSTRUCT A DIY FIRE PIT Create a cozy gathering spot in your yard by building a DIY fire pit. Start by marking the desired location and clearing away any vegetation. Dig a shallow circular pit and line it with bricks or stones, leaving a small gap between them for ventilation. Add a layer of sand for stability. To prevent fire hazards, surround the pit with a ring of gravel or non-flammable material. Place chairs or benches around the fire pit and enjoy memorable evenings roasting marshmallows or simply basking in its warm glow.

Transforming a dull patch of land into a vibrant and eye-catching flower bed is an easy and rewarding DIY project. Choose a sunny spot in your yard and prepare the soil by removing any weeds and loosening it with a garden fork. Select a variety of flowers that thrive in your climate, ensuring they have different bloom times to provide a continuous display throughout the seasons. Plant them in an appealing pattern, incorporating different heights and colors for visual interest. Regular watering, mulching, and occasional fertilizing will help your flower bed flourish.

INSTALL A DECORATIVE PATHWAY Enhance the visual appeal of your yard by installing a decorative pathway. You can choose from various materials such as gravel, stepping stones, or bricks. Clear the area and outline the desired path. Remove the topsoil and level the ground. Place your chosen pathway material, ensuring they are evenly spaced and leveled. Fill the gaps with sand, gravel, or ground cover plants for a polished look. A well-designed pathway not only adds charm to your yard but also provides a practical and inviting element.

DIY yard projects are a delightful way to infuse personality and creativity into your outdoor space. Whether it's planting a colorful flower bed, constructing a fire pit for cozy gatherings, or building a backyard movie screen for entertaining evenings, these projects provide endless enjoyment. Take the opportunity to unleash your inner DIY enthusiast and transform your yard into a haven where you can relax, entertain, and create cherished memories with loved ones.

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE

DREAMS COME TRUE by CHARLIE SCHULER

I HAVE OFTEN BEEN ASKED HOW I GOT INTO SAILING. MY ANSWER WAS THAT I HAD A DREAM, AND DREAMS CAN COME TRUE.

If your dream becomes your goal, then everything you do supports that goal. As an adventurer, I especially enjoyed the water and boats. This would include inflatables, canoes, sunfish, power, and sailboats. We were living in Winston-Salem, NC at the time and we saw a new 25’ O’Day sailboat and trailer for sale. It had a short keel, and it was weighted. Webster describes a keel as, “The longitudinal structure along the centerline at the bottom of the vessel’s hull.” The keel made it self-righting so if you made a mistake, you still had the boat. There was also a swing keel to help it sail into the wind. And the whole rig fit nicely on a trailer. It had a sail drive for when you had to have power. That meant that a small outboard motor was physically mounted through the hull just aft of the keel. Perfect for a beginner. The boat had a sloop design, with a single mast, with a jib, (foresail), and a mainsail. And it had a cuddy cabin which meant you could not stand up straight while down below. There were two bunks which could be used for sleeping. And let me not forget a porta-potty for when nature calls. A porta-potty must be taken ashore to be cleaned. No dumping overboard. A very nice small, but

efficient, layout for 25’. This was what we needed, and we bought her. We kept her in the water at Lake Norman and sailed her often. I named her S E A G U L L . All boats are referred to as she. It’s fitting if you think about it. They are beautiful, temperamental, and easy to love. Meanwhile I was learning the do’s and don’ts of sailing. One lesson comes to mind. We were beating into the wind on Lake Norman with a few guests on board. We were moving nicely, and it was thrilling with the wind in our faces and hearing the water rushing under the keel. The boat was heeled over about 20 degrees. I noticed that the sky was getting darker when suddenly, a very strong blast of wind came from the cloud. We were actually “knocked down”. The mainsail and the mast went into the water. This scared everyone on the boat, especially me. I let all the sheets fly free and the boat started to right herself. The sheets are the lines used to work the sails. Fortunately, the water did not get into the cockpit or down below. A close call for an inexperienced sailor. But I was learning. Of course, everyone had their Personal Flotation Device (PFD) on, thank God.

I was transferred to New Jersey, and the S E A G U L L was going with me. Fortunately, we were located close to the shore in New Jersey. We found a slip on the coast and rented it. This was the beginning of our saltwater adventure. We were still working, and we got very active in boating and learning. We joined the United States Power Squadron and took every boating course they offered. One of our early trips was up the Hudson River to West Point. This would give us some practical experience, anchoring and spending the night onboard. We got all that and some practical learning points as well. We left our slip and sailed out into the ocean. It was a beautiful day, and everything was going our way. We passed under the Verrazano Bridge and entered New York Harbor. Fantastic sights and skyline, but lots of boat traffic. Freighters and tankers at anchor, ferries going back and forth, tugs pushing

and pulling barges and so much more. Fortunately, the tide was coming in and it helped push us up to the George Washington Bridge. We set the anchor, turned on the anchor light and prepared our meal while we enjoyed the magnificent view. When the sun went down, so did we. We figured we would retire early and rise early to make our way up the river to West Point. We had a rule when sailing: if anything changed, wake me up. And this meant anything. Marianne woke me shortly after I fell asleep. The S E A G U L L was struggling at anchor. The boat was heeling and I was confused. What happened was that the tide changed from incoming to outgoing and the anchor line was looped around the sail drive. Not good! We gave this a lot of thought before we came up with a plan. We decided Marianne would add ten feet of anchor line on my say and I would take the boat hook, place it on the line, and I would then force the surplus line down off the sail drive. It worked, thank you,Lord! The S E A G U L L slowly turned herself into the current and all was well again. The next day was beautiful, and we were about to get our next lesson. We sailed for hours, and we got nowhere. The tide had changed to outgoing, and the current was going as fast as we could sail. When all else fails, start the engine. We eventually did make it to West Point, and we decided that we would stay at a marina for the night rather than anchor out. This was the beginning of our dream, and we kept pursuing it for many years. We graduated next to a 34’ O’Day sloop, then to a 42’ Tayana cutter rigged sailboat. Cutter has two headsails, and we sailed them over 20,000 miles. Dreams do come true, if you stay with the current...

QUIET QUITTING—WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO AVOID IT by LESLIE SPEAS

DURING THE PANDEMIC, QUIET QUITTING EMERGED AS A MUCHPUBLICIZED TREND. THE TERM WAS DRIVEN BY GEN Z WORKERS WHO HELPED IT GO VIRAL ON TIK TOK. SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? Quiet quitting refers to doing the minimum requirements of one’s job and putting in no more time, effort, or enthusiasm than is absolutely necessary. In short, it is doing the bare minimum to get by. Is this new? Not at all. It’s really just another word for employee engagement—or lack thereof. And before engagement was a thing, it was called presenteeism. This meant that someone was at work physically, but not really present mentally. A 2022 Gallup survey suggested that at least half of the U.S. workforce consists of quiet quitters, with the percentage being particularly high among workers under age 35. So, what is the root cause of quiet quitting? A large part of it stems from employees not feeling like their organization or manager cares about them.our lives more consciously and maintain a healthy balance. It’s time, LKN readers, to discover some of the everyday energy takers and energy givers and how we can reclaim our vitality. To overcome this, it’s important to understand that there are really three human needs (aka rules of engagement) that need to be addressed in the workplace. 1. We want to see meaning and purpose in our work and understand how our work matters to the organization, our manager, and the customers we serve. 2. We want to be recognized for our unique contributions. 3. We want to have a good relationship with our leader and feel that he/she cares and wants to help us grow.

IF YOU ARE IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION, TO GET A PULSE ON WHERE YOUR EMPLOYEES ARE AS IT RELATES TO THESE NEEDS, YOU COULD CONSIDER A ONE-ON-ONE WHERE YOU ASK THEM OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS SUCH AS:

IF YOU ARE PERSONALLY IN QUIET QUITTER MODE, THIS IS NO WAY TO BE! IT’S NOT FAIR TO YOU OR YOUR EMPLOYER. HERE ARE FIVE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO TRY TO GET YOURSELF BACK ON TRACK.

• What would help you to see more meaning and purpose in

1. Be direct. Set clear boundaries and expectations with your

manager. Direct communication is more likely to lead to positive

change than passive-aggressive maneuvers. Try to enhance the

• Are you feeling appreciated at work?

relationship and ask them to help you with finding meaning,

• Am I meeting the team’s needs as a leader? What could I do better

purpose and appreciation in your work.

or differently? Once you have attempted to address the needs of your employees and move them towards engagement, it may be necessary to move those that are still in quiet quitter mode out of your organization by holding them accountable for performance and behavior.

2. Cultivate work friendships. Camaraderie and mutual support make the day-to-day more fun and can help keep you from burning out. 3. Identify your strengths and lean into them. We are much happier when we are working in our areas of strength. If you don’t know yours, find out what they are and focus on using them wherever possible. 4. Be proactive. Don’t wait to be told what to do—look for opportunities to create value. 5. Update your resume and start networking. If the above tips don’t work, it may be time to start looking for another opportunity.

L AWN FAR MING by ROCKY THOMPSON

There are two spots in my yard where I cannot grow grass. One is a bog, and the other is a big pile of rocks. I’ve tried to fill in the bog with dirt, and I’ve tried to pick up all the rocks, but so far, they remain dead zones. Grass growing is a new thing for me. All my adult life I’ve lived in condos or apartments where I had no yardwork or lawn to tend. I have also always lived in places north of here, like New York City, where there’s a surprisingly abundant amount of grass. Throw grass seed on the ground anytime of the year that it’s not covered in snow and it’ll turn into a thick, lush lawn in weeks. Grass even grows in sidewalk cracks where there’s no soil. So, I thought it’d be easy to grow a lawn. Turns out that at the lake that our combination heat, soil, and sun conspire to make life a bit harder for grass. We worked with a pro at grass growing, David Tilley over at GrassRoots Turf to get set up with a nice lawn, and he nailed it. But then when we were out of town I hired a guy to mow my lawn while we were away and he managed to chop an irrigation line in half and most of the lawn died off in the extreme heat wave we’d been so happy to miss. With David’s help the lawn bounced back, but the bog and rockpile remained stubborn.

82 | lkn-magazine.com

I set out to tackle the issue. First, I bought so many bags of soil and stacked them in the garage that it looked like I was building a bunker to defend myself in WWIII. And then I offered my kids cash in exchange for every Lowes bucket that they filled with rocks off the rock pile. They filled up precisely one-half of a bucket with dirt instead of rocks and then asked to be paid. So I ended up picking up all the rocks myself, and then I thought it’d be a good idea to rake the former rock pile, which just turned up a whole new pile of rocks. Instead of picking them up I covered the whole mess with some of the bags of soil I’d overbought, then filled in the bog too. Then I dumped on enough grass seed to choke a flock of seagulls and covered the whole thing in straw. But what’s this, just as I finish the sky seems to be getting a little dark? Ten minutes later sideways rain is coming down hard enough to wash all the stains off the driveway and of course blow away all my straw and grass seed. So, the next afternoon I repeated the seed and straw process and then went inside. About an hour later tornado sirens interrupted my work, and by the time the rain started I was wondering if maybe this was a sign from the universe that these two spots on my lawn are not meant to have grass.
