HELLO FALL!

As we embrace the crisp air of autumn, LKN Magazine is thrilled to begin our second year of publishing with the much-anticipated bi-annual “Home” Issue. This edition is a celebration of all things that make a house a home. It is filled with inspiration and ideas to elevate your living spaces, find the home you’ve been looking for or perhaps find the service for which you’ve been looking (starting on page 14).

In this season of growth and gratitude, I've found so much inspiration from my incredible family. My daughter, Brooke, has taught me so much in this past year! Slowing down, setting boundaries and, most of all, to practice my patience. Our daily virtual walks and thoughtful conversations have become a cherished routine, reminding me of life's blessings.

My son, Tanner, shares his culinary passion in his 919 Backyard BBQ column (page 64), we are so fortunate to be frequent recipients of his amazing creations, both on and off the grill. Meanwhile, my husband, Tim (aka TJ or Teej), serves as a constant reminder to prioritize health, exercise and time away from the computer. What he does on a daily basis in and outside of our home makes life so much easier for me.

The influence of my parents, two remarkable LKN ambassadors at 83 and 89, is a guiding light in this journey. They remind me daily to honor God, live life to the fullest and always smile! Their mantra is to make your day FANTASTIC , and that is what they do every single day!

So excited to introduce my friends at Consign on a Dime. This is one of my favorite cover images, and it shows you how involved Heather (the owner) is involved in the day-to-day business of both of her consignment shops,

Consign on a Dime and Showplace 28. Her team is a joy with which to work. If you haven’t visited, put this on the top of your list. They make the consignment process so easy. Truly, their inventory changes so frequently that it’s like going to a new store every visit. Check out their story (starting on page 30).

In this issue, we are excited to introduce our “Savor Local” column, encouraging our community to dine and drink locally, explore and savor the offerings, and let them know LKN Magazine sent you! It does make a difference to a small business owner, if we all take this to heart we can make a difference in the community we love (page 60).

If you haven't already, sign up for our monthly newsletter at LKN-magazine. com and connect with us on Instagram and Facebook (@lknmagazine). Let's stay connected and celebrate this beautiful month of October!

“I really believe everyone deserves a home they love. Home is our safe place.”
STEPHANIE DOBSON OWNER AND PRINCIPAL DESIGNER, P ersonalize D esign I nteriors
WHERE BEAUTIFUL SPACES COME TO LIFE

If you ask Stephanie Dobson, owner and principal designer at PersonalizeDesign Interiors, what her favorite current project is, she quickly says that would be equivalent to choosing a favorite child—simply not possible.

That’s how much she loves what she does!

Born and raised just outside Concord, NC, Stephanie is a mom and wife, with a blended family of seven (that’s one husband and five kids whose ages range from teenagers to mid-20s). Reflecting on her own hectic household, she knows a home must be intentionally designed to function well for the family—while also looking pretty, of course!

Stephanie always dreamed of being an interior designer, but her analytical skills first drew her to a career in accounting and payroll. After a successful 17 years in the corporate world, she took the plunge, and returned to her passion for design.

customer experience. I want clients to feel comforted knowing I am walking alongside them during their project journey, and feel pampered enough to truly enjoy the process!” she adds.

She knows entrepreneurship is not for everyone— it’s tough some days, and you need the best people in your corner,” she says. “I’ve always believed it’s important to surround yourself with positive people, and I’m so grateful to my husband, who really is my biggest cheerleader. He’s my sounding board when I need a second opinion, and ALWAYS when I need a pick-me-up. I’m also honored to network with other business owners and mentors—and thankful for a couple of close friends who encourage me to reach for the stars! I finally found my tribe and I consider myself blessed to have the circle I do.”

In a field that’s filled with emotion, she follows an important motto: “We don’t compete, we collaborate.” Stephanie calls it one of their core values.

“I communicate, communicate, then communicate some more!” she explains. “Design can sometimes feel confusing, but I remind clients what’s next, over and over again. When they know where their project currently is in the process, they can relax. I introduce design elements I feel passionately about to show them what’s possible, but at the end of the day, it’s their home! Nothing is ever ordered or installed without client approval.”

Scheduling a Discovery Call and Completing the Intake Questionnaire are the first steps of Stephanie’s process, where she’s determining project scope, timeline, and investment levels. Unless clients have worked with a designer before, most people update rooms one, or just a few pieces at a time. Knowing what’s realistic, and what a client is willing to spend is crucial. Stephanie also provides a Consultation Package which includes a detailed cost estimate of low, mid, and high-cost items, and her free budget template is ideal for clients to begin research for their project on their own.

“I’m a life-long learner so I love to soak up as much information as possible from books, magazines, trade shows, interior design forums, and collaboration with other designers. Following my favorite designers’ work, visiting showrooms and, sometimes unplugging and enjoying nature will foster the best ideas,” she says.

Stephanie explains her corporate career helped prepare her for entrepreneurship in so many ways.

“Working with various teams taught me effective communication and partnership, while managing multiple large projects helped me understand all the nuances that bring an idea from concept to completion. One of the most valuable lessons I keep with me is the importance of a wonderful

“I really believe everyone deserves a home they love. Home is our safe place—which can make it hard for people to ‘hand over the reins’ at first. Design is personal, and our homes are our biggest investment,” she adds. “I spend time getting to know clients, diving into everything they like or dislike about their spaces, why they want to make a change, and how the change will impact their lives.”

“Understanding average project costs and how the process works is important, and both parties need to decide if we’re a great fit to work together. There should be a connection between us that feels right, if we’re going to be in each other’s lives for an extended period of time!”

Stephanie savors that creative process—walking into a space and seeing the possibilities.

“I love seeing that idea come to life at the end of a project, and I enjoy meeting clients and hearing about their lives. And I love meeting all of the four-legged family members!”

Building a new home, or simply furnishing and accessorizing your current space are both projects with countless moving parts. Stephanie loves helping clients style their living spaces to feel like home. “Hiring a designer and other professionals provides a wealth of knowledge and, collectively, they become your dream team. Working with an interior designer also provides access to ‘to-thetrade’ vendors for art, lighting, rugs, and custom furniture,” she adds. “Again, the best things come from collaboration!”

RELAX & UNWIND ON LAKE TIME

If you’re looking for the perfect “home away from home” and you’re naturally intrigued by all the health benefits of living near water, come soothe your body and soul by the lake! Tiny Homes of Lake Norman is an ideal second home destination, where your time is definitely your own.

Since 2016, Lake Norman RV Resort owner Jim Davidson has closely watched the widespread growing love for Tiny Homes. As he saw the exciting trend evolving, he began adding a few units at a time to his RV Resort in Sherrills Ford. His intuition paid off, and the resort is now 75% converted from RV Resort to a Tiny Homes community.

“The conversion will be fully complete by 2024,” Jim explains. “That’s a year ahead of my initial expectations!”

Steadily growing in popularity, his team is selling one or two homes a month. Once you visit, and witness firsthand the lake setting, breathtaking sunsets, and incredible amenities, we know you’ll find a model that’s right for you!

Current Tiny Homes owners use their smaller residences as a mix of primary and secondary homes—based on their lifestyle and family needs. Owners purchase the 399-square-foot tiny homes and rent their lot, based on location and view. Jim is also now offering investors the opportunity to purchase, with the RV Resort managing all rentals, to maintain security and rental price consistency.

And, you can rent a fully-furnished tiny home here for your next vacation—before making a purchase—to give you and your family time to get to know what lake life is all about. The reasons we know you’ll say ‘yes’ to a tiny home of your own are plentiful!

• Tiny Homes are significantly more efficient and environmentally friendly, and a smaller living space automatically results in lower costs for both heating and cooling.

• Owners of Tiny Homes here will be able to enjoy all the wonderful amenities offered by the RV Resort, including kayaks, water boards, pedal boats, and pontoon rentals, along with a game room, exercise room, boat ramp and boat slips for guests, plus a fabulous new pool is slated to open for the 2024 pool season!

• Securely gated and built for privacy, the Tiny Homes community provides total peace of mind for you and your family. What more could you want for your private escape?

• Tiny Homes of Lake Norman is located less than an hour from Charlotte, and that means you’ll be close to enjoying the area’s favorite professional sports teams, amazing dining and shopping options, and exciting opportunities for fans of the performing arts.

• That quick “getaway” you suddenly need will be readily available! There’s no stress of fighting crowds at other resorts or large theme parks when you can vacation right here—with all available amenities if you want to be active—or a quiet retreat if you prefer more downtime.

Style-wise, there’s no denying that these Tiny Homes are a charming, picturesque option when your soul say it’s time to get away and cultivate your own retreat. These tiny home kitchens include full-size appliances, as well as full bathrooms, and the exteriors include either a deck or porch.

For more information on the Lake Norman RV Resort and Tiny Homes of Lake Norman, or for up-to-date availability, reach their office at 704-489-6033. The resort is located at 6738 E. NC 150 Hwy, in Sherrills Ford, NC. Explore all of the resort’s amenities and find current rental information and more details on purchasing a Tiny Home of your own at lakenormanmotorcoachresort.com.

TIME FOR A CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND!

With the arrival of October comes that warm, wonderful “closer to Christmas” feeling—and Laura Seagle, owner of The Red Barn Marketplace in Denver, NC, couldn’t be happier!

“Christmas is our biggest time of the year! We close for a week, and then we transform the store into a winter wonderland,” Laura explains. “I want customers to come in and immediately feel like a child on Christmas morning, and I want our youngest customers to be in awe of the beautiful trees, lights, ornaments, and the smell of cider in the air. Just pure excitement!!”

Make sure your calendar is marked for Saturday, November 4, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., when 3,300-square-feet of Christmas magic will fill this popular, family-owned home

décor and gifts store. This year, the shop will close Sunday, October 29, until Friday, November 3, to prepare for their launch of the holiday season!

“All our creative vendors will be there helping customers on Open House day—that’s 12 total vendors, who have been with me since day one,” adds Laura. “We’re fortunate that Chick-fil-a of Denver provides both breakfast and lunch for us that day (as they have for the past eight years) so we are free to guide customers in being totally consumed with Christmas spirit!”

Laura’s vision of the store has always been of her various vendors meshing together, with a continuity that makes the store flow easily. Her vendors constantly work together to make the space a happy place.

“This is the way life should be—leaning on each other, working together for good, and being good Christians to all people! Plus, we are huge on supporting local businesses in Denver. In my mind, I like to consider my store the place to come when you’re looking for the perfect gift (not just at Christmas!), but if I don’t have what you’re looking for, I’ll tell you where to get it!” she adds.

You’ll find the ambiance here all about kindness, and Laura is constantly shopping at other local stores, helping her customers by staying on top of what others carry, too.

“Not only do we, as small businesses, share on social media and by word of mouth about all the wonderful local stores, but they all do the same. We are family, and we all want to make Denver a destination spot.”

Local hot cider made in Rock Hill, SC, is just one of the amazing scents you’ll encounter starting November 4th when Christmas takes center stage here—along with seasonal candles, delicious local goodies, holiday accessories for your home, gift baskets—Santa’s list goes on and on!

Also enjoy their Christmas Open House Surprise, by making a purchase at The Red Barn on Saturday, October 28 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and receiving a special surprise on Christmas Open House day!

Since opening in 2015, Laura has always considered The Red Barn a place of therapy.

“It’s a spot for people to come and enjoy beautiful things, have a cup of coffee or a taste of one of our local products, and just feel loved,” says Laura. “Every person who enters our store is family, whether we met you yesterday or last Christmas.”

October 2023 | 21
Come join the holiday fun at The Red Barn Marketplace, located at 1612 N. Hwy 16 in Denver, NC, 704-966-1358. Store hours for the holiday season will be Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Follow them on Instagram @theredbarn_marketplace for updates and other store events!

Lucky enough to combine her true passions of architecture and design into a career, Janine Fields is the kind of real estate professional who volunteers to assist elderly clients with last-minute packing—and paints personal, watercolor thank-you notes for her clients.

“Even as a teenager, I was constantly painting and sketching lighting fixtures, and always studying architecture,” Janine explains. While she technically only paints now as a hobby— in oils, acrylics, and watercolor—you might find one of her paintings in a staged home that’s for sale.

professionalism and hard work, but also her friendly, energetic personality, her enthusiasm for real estate, and above all, her integrity. From first-time buyers and new construction, to waterfront homes, Janine is a master of creative solutions when the need arises.

“I want to see everyone smiling—that smile when you know you’ve found the right home!” she says, then shares a personal skill she has that’s a bonus for someone in real estate. “My brain is like a GPS—it’s just a skill I have. Once I’ve been somewhere, I never need directions again!”

Originally from Grefrath, Germany, Janine first visited the Charlotte area in 2005, as an intern with Charlotte Sister Cities, and lived with a host family in Troutman on Lake Norman. She was immediately smitten with both Charlotte and the Lake Norman community, and after her hosts announced they had the perfect man for her to meet—she was smitten once again!

Janine and her now-husband, Jimmy, endured a two-year, longdistance relationship before she made her official move to the area in 2012. Together, they share their lives with Milo, an adored rescue dog of the border collie/retriever mix, who is undeniably the light of their lives. They call Trilogy Lake Norman home, a vibrant 55+ community located in Denver. Janine playfully notes that she’s the youngest homeowner in this community. Their residence is truly a work of art in its own right!

After finally making Charlotte her permanent home, Janine worked as Chief Administrative Officer for a German company that manufactured retractable dog leashes. Although she’s a huge animal lover, she soon realized her dream job was waiting elsewhere, and after the pandemic, she seized the opportunity to finally study for her real estate license.

“In Germany, I had worked for a well-known architect and appraiser—as his executive assistant, and writing appraisals,” says Janine. “I was always career-driven and wanted to be working. Right after she turned 40, she knew it was time for a change. “It was the moment you think, ‘if not now, when?’” she said. Soon, she was transitioning a 22-year career in business management into her love for art, architecture, and design, and launching her new role as a realtor.

With Southern Homes of the Carolinas, she has freedom to create her own schedule. Fully dedicated to her clients, Janine calls herself a “hands-on” realtor, who makes reaching their goals her personal mission. Her clients value her

Returning to a glimpse of her own home, which sets the stage for all the life and love she brings to her job. “It’s definitely a reflection of my personality and passion,” she says. “We have a few old things in the house, marble tiled floors, many modern art pieces, and a gazillion books!”

Janine loves to cook and the couple enjoys entertaining—and her charming personality is evident in so many elements of the home. You’ll quickly notice an extraordinarily cool lighting fixture by German designer, Ingo Maurer. “Every guest who spends the night here is encouraged to leave a heartfelt message on a blank sheet of paper before departing,” Janine explains.

While Janine’s passion lies in the realm of art, she recalls a moment from her twenties when she was asked about her longterm goals. Her response was a desire to learn how to play the piano, with the caveat that this dream could still be realized when she turned 40. She chuckles, saying, “So, when my 39th birthday arrived, I decided to treat myself to a baby grand piano, which, to me, is not just a musical instrument but also a work of art. Art and music, they’re all intertwined,” she muses.

Just as Janine’s own home offers a charming personal retreat, she extends the same commitment to her real estate clients. Her primary goal is to ensure they feel comfortable throughout the entire property-buying process, and she’s always eager to alleviate any burdens they may encounter. Janine is also a firm believer that if you live on the lake, you never really need a vacation.

“It’s your own little piece of paradise!” she reminds us.

10 YEARS IN THE COLORFUL WORLD OF FABRICS

With so many reasons to fall in love with amazing designer upholstery, pillow, and drapery fabrics—that are 50-75% off their retail prices!— shopping at Modern Fabrics in Huntersville is an easy choice, and always a fun time.

As a delightful bonus, there’s also the welcoming smile and sunny outlook of store manager, Debra Worthy!

Celebrating her 10th anniversary with the company, she’s proud of her longevity with co-owners James and Ewa Powell, and thankful to be part of this unique business. Arriving at Modern Fabrics is not just about shopping, it’s more like visiting an old North Carolina vibe, making new friends, getting new ideas, and leaving inspired, both creatively and soulfully. Each fabric tells a different story, and each story leads to a great conversation with Debra!

Modern Fabrics sells textiles from the finest luxury furniture companies in the United States. These remnants saved from the cutting room floor would otherwise be discarded and headed straight for a landfill. The “thrill of the hunt” finds Ewa traveling far and wide to source the fabrics you find in the Huntersville location, and in the online store (modern-fabrics.com).

But it’s Debra who clients recognize first. She’s the one who folks visit for a friendly chat and some expert advice, and so it’s no surprise she has a strong bond with many repeat customers in search of fine fabrics and some good ‘ole North Carolina “visiting!”

“Beautiful fabrics were my first love as a kid,” says Debra. “My favorite class was always the one with the sewing machines.”

Being from Thomasville, NC, Debra has naturally always had a great appreciation for quality furniture and fabric, having grown up with family, friends, and neighbors who worked in the industry. Debra also spent “too many years” in financial services—her first career—before joining Modern Fabrics in 2013. Her accounting and financial perspective helped take Modern Fabrics to a more professional, and better organized level.

Now, she loves being able to greet people and say, “welcome to my colorful world of designer textiles, how can I help make your space more beautiful?”

After 10 years with the Modern Fabrics family, Debra loves selling fabric, but most of all, she values the friendships she’s made with customers, who feel more like friends.

“My best experiences here have been meeting new people, and even witnessing our customers share ideas with each other,” says Debra. “We provide a welcoming smile and inspiration, with the goal of an amazing shopping experience. It’s a pleasure to assist customers with their design projects, and help them find fabrics they’ll love at their home or business.”

Relocating the business from Charlotte to Huntersville has been a great transition for Modern Fabrics, continuing James and Ewa’s mission of sourcing designer textiles to customers, while helping save the environment. As Ewa is known to say: “Our company saves the earth, one yard of fabric at a time!” Every purchase of their designer textiles adds to the team’s reclaiming efforts, geared towards reducing waste. Modern Fabrics diverts over 150,000 yards of fabric from going into the landfill every year, and that’s over 85 miles of fabric!

Debra, Ewa, and James are all thrilled when customers share their before and after photos!

“I’ve seen so many beautiful DIY projects, and many hobbies have led to entrepreneurship! I love it!” adds Debra.

Debra is also happy to connect customers with expert workrooms in the Lake Norman area, and will happily walk you through the entire upholstery, pillow, or drapery-making process.

Come for inspiration soon, meet the team, and let Debra demonstrate her passion for fabrics and life! And don’t forget to share your DIY photos with them via email or social media. Modern Fabrics is located at 15435 NC-73, Huntersville, NC, 704-740-9676. Shop their online store at modern-fabrics.com, email service@ modern-fabrics.com for more information, and follow them on Instagram @modernfabrics. POWELL, CO-OWNER

FOR THE HOME YOU LOVE

The two love their unique niche in the marketplace, opening their Cornelius, NC, stores to a variety of designs and styles, while also focusing on luxury brands, and extremely unique finds.

“We do accept a few select vintage items, as many of our younger buyers like to mix a classic vintage piece in with a modern setting,” Heather explains. “The beautiful part of this company is at any given time you can walk into the stores and view an amazing selection of items —and then the following week our stores can be packed full of completely different designs.”

Heather and Andrew have loved meeting some amazing people within the past three years, from “original” Cornelius families who owned the farmland that is now Lake Norman, to high-profile athletes living in the community.

“Meeting clients lets us establish a friendship with them that allows the lines of communication, and design recommendations, to stay open and flowing,” says Heather. The team—a total of 17 between the two stores—will begin prepping their huge Christmas inventory space soon, which will open on November 1st, while constantly re-designing displays to showcase the current inventory.

“Our staff works so hard to curate bays of designs with what products we have to choose from at the time,” says Heather. “I’m truly amazed by what they can construct with what we have on hand—it’s always absolutely stunning.”

“FINDING WHAT YOU LOVE AND WHAT MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE IS A KEY ELEMENT TO BEING HAPPY AND CONTENT IN YOUR OWN HOME,” EXPLAINS HEATHER KLINE, WHO, ALONG WITH HER HUSBAND, ANDREW, BOUGHT CONSIGN ON A DIME & SHOWPLACE 28 IN 2020.

ENDLESS INSPIRATION

Heather also feels education is important, and the staff at both stores works hard to stay up-to-date on trends.

“We all love browsing Interior Designers’ Instagram pages to gain knowledge of what clients are searching for, and following along with trends on social media to see what’s desired at the moment, and what’s on the way out.”

Heather says mixed metals with a splash of color are definitely trending. “Natural wood tones with a balance of earth tones are also popular now,” she adds. “We advise customers to make their space their own. There isn’t really a specific formula when it comes to design.”

She knows customers find images on social media or Pinterest that they love— and piecing that design together is where her staff’s expertise comes in!

“Many interior designers also come through our stores to view our weekly inventory. Some will be searching for that unique item to put the final touch on a project,” she adds.

Every April and October—coming up!—the Consign on a Dime team attends the High Point Furniture Market to see new trends and designs first-hand, as well as meet new vendors.

“I love to work with furniture design showrooms, and many of them choose to consign their showroom samples once they move them off the floor or discontinue them. At least once a month we also attend inhome appointments where residents may want to consign 50-75% of the furniture in the home.”

ENDLESS INSPIRATION

All that works in harmony to create the varied inventory available in both stores.

“I truly think our team is doing more than just selling consignment furniture —we create a fun welcoming environment for visitors to stop by and browse, as well as just enjoy a friendly chat!”

The store’s art and accessories vary from traditional oil paintings to contemporary abstract pieces, and they recently offered a framed print from a local artist that’s still available in art galleries throughout the NC/SC area. From vintage Itzchak Tarkay art to original watercolors on canvas, you can find them at either location. Showplace 28 also sells custom furniture by Rowe—from sofas to chairs, with a wide selection of fabric to choose from.

32 | lkn-magazine.com

As fall transitions into the holidays, the team looks forward to celebrating with some wonderful pieces.

“Our holiday inventory is some of my favorites!” explains Heather. “Last year we even had ‘The Grinch’ appear (sneaking through both stores to surprise customers!!) Who knows who will appear this year as we inch closer to the holidays!”

Heather and Andrew know their successes and expansions wouldn’t be possible without a dedicated staff, and the overwhelming support within the Lake Norman small business community. Consign On A Dime is always looking for clean, gently used, quality furniture and home accessories. All items must be pre-approved for consignment, and you can email pictures to info@consignonadime.com. Consign On A Dime & Showplace 28 have a proven track record of quick turnover because of their high-quality inventory.

The perfect pieces to refresh your current home, a new apartment, or even a college dorm room, are waiting at Consign On A Dime, located at 19207 W. Catawba Avenue, Suite A, Cornelius, NC, 704-892-8492, and online at www. Consignonadime.com. Showplace 28 is located at 20924 Torrence Chapel Road, Cornelius, NC, 704-892-4447, and online at www.Showplace28.com. Follow them on Instagram @coadandsp28. Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

WHY CONSIGNING MAKES SENSE

Consignment Takes The Hassle Out Of Selling

We take the guesswork out of both pricing and selling. By working with a consignment furniture store, your items will be staged beautifully with other décor inside a showroom, highlighting your furniture in its best light!

No Direct Selling Risks

From damage to your furniture, selling to the wrong buyers, and allowing strangers into your home, there can be stressors. We handle every step, and ensure you are getting the best value for your items.

Consigning Furniture is Eco-Friendly

By using the services of a consignment store to resell your furniture, you not only make money, but you also help save the environment. Rather than throwing away perfectly good furniture that ends up in a landfill, consigning gives pieces a second chance and helps the environment. Your beloved items can be repurposed, reused, and enjoyed in another home!

Yes, Consignment Furniture Stores Have a Following!

Consignment store owners have access to plenty of shoppers, with solid, established customer relationships, and frugal shoppers aren’t the only ones shopping there. Many small-town consignment stores belong to a tight knit community of customers who stop by every week to see what’s new. Store owners also have relationships with interior designers in their area, allowing shoppers to find high-quality furniture at a fraction of the price. Plus, supporting small businesses is always the best idea!

FALL PROJECTS

The Westlake experts say some flooring projects are just well-suited to the fall season.

• It’s an ideal time to refinish hardwood floors, as the lower humidity levels out and more stable temperatures ensure proper drying and curing of the finish.

• Homeowners often refresh the appearance of their hardwood floors before the holidays.

• As the weather cools down, you may consider replacing old carpets with something new, creating a cozy, comfortable atmosphere for fall and winter.

• In planning for messy wintertime weather, clients often opt to add tile or stone flooring in kitchens, bathrooms and entryways as a practical choice for areas with increased foot traffic.

• Another popular fall project is adding area rugs to rooms with hardwood or tile flooring. Rugs are always more appealing as the weather cools, for a cozy ambiance and ultimate comfort.

• Yes, as the holiday season nears, we schedule flooring projects to have our homes looking their best for celebrations with family and friends!

TRENDS & TRADITIONAL FAVORITES

Again, wisdom from the experts!

• Warm shades of pale beige are regaining popularity for carpets, particularly in bedrooms and upstairs spaces, while colored carpets with patterns, like plaid or stripes, offer an elevated look for basements or offices. Low-pile carpets are still preferred for easy maintenance and are suited for high-traffic areas.

• Current hardwood (including luxury vinyl plank and laminate) trends include wide plank hardwood flooring which gives rooms a more spacious and modern feel. Lighter wood floors, such as pale pine and bleached oak, contribute to a brighter, more open atmosphere in interior spaces. Plus, lighter floors can hide dust, dirt and scratches better than darker floors, making them a practical choice for busy households or homes with pets.

• Classic mid-toned brown floors are versatile, fitting both traditional and modern designs. Their timeless nature transcends changing trends.

• Matte and satin finishes are preferred over high-gloss finishes for a more natural and subtle appearance, while patterned tiles are being used to create eye-catching focal points on floors and walls.

• Natural stone tiles, such as marble, travertine and slate continue to be popular for their timeless beauty and character, and other timeless options include marble mosaics and porcelain penny, basket weave or hexagon tiles.

For residential clients, Westlake offers an extensive selection of flooring materials including hardwood, carpet, vinyl and tile, and luxury vinyl plank and laminate which stand up to scratches and are also waterproof.

For commercial projects, they understand the importance of durability, functionality and aesthetics, and commercial flooring options include sturdy hardwoods, low-maintenance vinyl, durable carpet tiles, luxury vinyl plank and more. The team works closely with business owners, architects and designers to ensure that the chosen flooring solution aligns with the unique demands of the commercial environment.

Conveniently located in Denver, NC, Westlake Flooring offers an experienced, knowledgeable staff who will help you through every stage of selecting the right flooring for your home or commercial project. Enhance Your Lake Norman Living HOME & DECORATING IDEAS

Lake Norman is a haven for water enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Its stunning landscapes, serene waters, and vibrant community make it an ideal location to call home. If you're fortunate enough to reside in this beautiful area, why not make your home a reflection of the natural beauty and unique culture of Lake Norman? Here are some home and decorating ideas to enhance your Lake Norman living experience.

OUTDOOR OASIS

Take advantage of Lake Norman’s mild climate by creating an inviting outdoor space. Arrange comfortable seating, like plush lounge chairs or a swing, to encourage relaxation and outdoor gatherings. Incorporate natural elements such as potted plants, stone pathways, and wooden accents to blend seamlessly with the lake's surroundings. Install soft outdoor lighting for a cozy atmosphere during evenings and nights, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful beauty of the lake at any hour.

LAKE-INSPIRED BEDROOM

Transform your bedroom into a peaceful retreat inspired by the serene ambiance of Lake Norman. Choose a calming color palette, such as soft blues, greens, and neutrals, to mimic the lake’s tranquil hues. Incorporate bedding with water-inspired patterns like waves or seashells. Decorate with driftwood, seashells, or framed photos of the lake to infuse a sense of nature into your personal space. Don't forget to add some soothing background music, perhaps the gentle sounds of waves or birdsongs, to enhance the peaceful vibe.

NAUTICAL THEMED LIVING ROOM

Capture the essence of Lake Norman’s maritime allure by incorporating a nautical theme into your living room. Start with a color palette inspired by the lake itself: shades of blue, white, and sandy beige. Incorporate navy-striped cushions, sea-inspired artwork, and decorative sailboat accents to evoke a breezy, coastal ambiance. Wooden furniture and distressed finishes can further enhance the nautical aesthetic, creating a cozy retreat reminiscent of a lakeside cabin.

DECK WITH A VIEW

If your home overlooks Lake Norman, make the most of this stunning feature by creating a deck with a view. Install a spacious deck with comfortable seating, like an outdoor dining set or cozy lounge chairs, to enjoy meals or simply relax while soaking in the lake's beauty. Opt for materials that withstand the elements, like weather-resistant wood or composite decking. Don't forget to add an umbrella or a pergola for shade and privacy, allowing you to fully appreciate your lakeside oasis.

OPEN-CONCEPT KITCHEN

Modern, open-concept kitchens are a growing trend, and they suit Lake Norman’s lifestyle perfectly. Knock down unnecessary walls to create a spacious and interconnected kitchen and dining area. Opt for light-colored cabinetry and countertops to give the space an airy, fresh feel. Consider adding a large window or glass sliding doors to invite natural light and provide a stunning view of the lake. Incorporate wooden elements and potted plants to infuse a touch of nature and warmth into your culinary haven.

Lake Norman offers a blend of natural beauty and a close-knit community, making it a unique and enchanting place to call home. By incorporating these home and decorating ideas inspired by the lake's surroundings, you can infuse your living space with the charm and serenity of Lake Norman, truly embracing the lakeside lifestyle. Whether you're a long-time resident or a newcomer, make your home a true reflection of the beauty that surrounds you.

BRINGING LAKE DREAMS TO LIFE

Born and raised in New Orleans, Darren Schmolke was immersed in a successful marine engine production business when it became obvious his company definitely needed an expansion. Instead of hiring other professionals, he and his partners built their own new commercial space themselves and, from there, Darren went on to build a home for his family. In a short amount of time, his expert craftsmanship capabilities were being noticed—and quickly sought after!

Building and remodeling homes in New Orleans came next, and then a life-changing move to the Lake Norman area in 2009.

“It was time for a fresh start for our family, and I literally Googled the Top Five places to live,” explains Darren. “So, here we are at Lake Norman!”

Now, Schmolke Construction has also become the best resource for lake dwellers when it’s time to build—or update—their dock. The team is ready to help you design, permit, build, and install a dock any time of year, and their services include dock repair and installation of boat and PWC lifts.

Darren feels his ability to really listen to and capture a client’s vision is what sets his business apart.

“I listen to clients about just how they envision using their dock, and then we provide a preliminary drawing,” he adds. “We also have a lot of flexibility, which clients appreciate. Our docks can be small-scale, a spacious two-story, or somewhere in between—and that includes both floating and fixed docks of all sizes. This business is not ‘once size fits all’!”

Design times for standard 1,000-square-foot docks vary, but the timeframe is typically two to six weeks. The company keeps busy year-round, which couldn’t make Darren happier! He is passionate about engineering and design, and describes himself as a problem-solver—so even though every project has its challenges, Darren is committed to staying on task and on budget.

With over 20 years of experience, Darren’s team also offers the most efficient and accurate pile driving barge on Lake Norman.

“We provide pile driving services and construction of fixed and floating docks of all types,” he explains. “What might take some installers a full day to do, we can do in a few hours, which saves our clients time and money.”

When you meet for an initial complimentary consultation, you’ll talk through boat dockage requirements, your family’s recreational needs, topography, and environmental issues.

Based on their stellar reputation, Schmolke Construction’s clientele is made up largely of returning customers and referrals, with a wide variety of projects that have included construction of the 20,000-square-foot indoor riding arena at Lakeside Farms and Stables, the Hildebrand Library, luxury town homes in Charlotte, and many custom homes both on and off Lake Norman.

If you’re located in Charlotte, Concord, Cornelius, Davidson, Denver, Huntersville, Mooresville, Statesville, or Troutman, or have a home on Lake Wylie, High Rock Lake, or Mountain Island Lake, give Darren a call for the most precise, reliable service on that most important piece of your lakeside home.

“To be able to play on Lake Norman and also make a living on the lake is something really special,” Darren adds. We couldn’t agree more!

Reach Schmolke Construction at 504-388-1994 or 704-450-5223, or learn more about their services at schmolkeconstruction.com or on Instagram @schmolkeconstruction, where you’ll be inspired by images of their latest exciting dock projects!

CELEBRATING A MINDFUL HALLOWEEN

HERE WE GO! FALL AND HALLOWEEN SEASON IS UPON US. WHO DOESN’T LOVE EVERYTHING FALL? SWEATSHIRTS, TAILGATES AND FOOTBALL, SHADES OF YELLOW AND ORANGE, PUMPKIN SPICE COFFEE AND APPLE CRISP, REFRESHING MORNING AIR, BACKYARD FIRES, LAUGHTER WITH FRIENDS…CHOCOLATE.

Let’s be intentionally present, enjoying all of the smells, sights and feels of this season while also being mindful of the unnecessary sugar overload.

Kids AND adults…there is NO reason to put yourself into a sugar-induced coma on November 1st.

Adults, I see you and we have all been there–when the kids head to bed, ravaging through the candy bucket picking out our favorites.

Keeping it simple: Most of us can satisfy our sweet tooth ANYTIME. There is no need to make choices as if you will never have access to that Snickers bar again.

Here are some additional tips to enjoy, stay safe and ensure avoidance of a sugar-induced high and exhausting low:

• Choose miniature candy bars over the full-sized option.

• Pick the dark chocolate over the milk chocolate.

• Consider handing out hot chocolate packets, individual packs of flavored almonds, pretzels or non-candy items like small toys or glow sticks.

• Choose your favorite two pieces of candy and really enjoy them.

• Emphasize the act of trick-or-treating–a long walk,

talk more to your neighbors and get some fresh air to balance out the treats.

• Don’t go hungry! Eat a balanced meal before heading out for the evening. Enjoy a perfect fall meal at home, like homemade chili, that can be made ahead of time.

Once the trick-or-treating is over:

• Save and clean your pumpkin seeds. Roast them with your favorite seasonings (350 degrees for about 45 minutes) for a delicious, fiber filled, healthy snack.

• Mix M&Ms with raw nuts to make your own trail mix.

• Look for local Halloween candy buyback programs. Usually many dentists in the area participate.

• Include your extra candy in a care package to send to a soldier overseas with a program like Soldiers Angels.

• Donate to a local soup kitchen or make goodie bags for Operation Christmas Child.

NATURAL & FUN WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY

Honey, have you seen my car keys? Now where did I put my phone? If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard these questions, I would be a rich woman! To be fair though, I have my share of memory blunders… like walking into a room and forgetting what I’m doing there; missing an appointment I forgot to put on my calendar or forgetting to pick up something at the store I thought about just a few minutes earlier. Everyone forgets things sometimes, and still, memory loss is important to “remember” to pay attention to.

Most of the memory problems we experience with age are due to normal changes in the structure and function of our brain. These changes can make it harder to learn new things as quickly as we once did or to tune out distractions, but there are things we can do to help protect and sharpen our minds as well. Here are some you might like to try.

Continue to learn.

Higher levels of education correlate with better mental functioning in old age. Experts think that continuing education may help keep our memory strong by getting our brains into the habit of staying mentally active. Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them. A job can keep you mentally active as can a hobby or learning a new skill. At work, you might volunteer for a project that involves a skill you don't normally use. Building and preserving brain connections is an ongoing process. Remember to make lifelong learning a priority.

Repeat what you want to know.

When you want to remember something you've just read, heard, or thought about, make a habit of repeating it out loud or else write it down. That way, you will reinforce the memory or connection. For example, if you've just been given someone's name, use it when you speak with him or her. If you have just taken your medicine for the night, speak out loud “I’ve just taken my nightly (fill in the blank) medication.

Make staying healthy a priority.

Eat less added sugar. Enjoy caffeine in moderation. Try a fish oil supplement. Maintain a healthy weight. Get enough sleep. Drink alcohol in moderation. Be physically active every day. Physical activity increases blood flow to the whole body, including the brain. This can help keep your memory sharp. Doing any or all of these things can help preserve your memory. Stay mentally active.

The same way physical activity keeps your body in shape, activities that stimulate your brain can help keep your memory sharp. Things like word puzzles, card games, board games, hobbies, volunteering and joining community groups are all great ways to engage and keep your mind stimulated.

Spend time with others.

Social interaction helps to avoid depression and anxiety. Both of these can contribute to memory loss. Seek out opportunities to get together with loved ones, friends and others who share your interests… especially if you live alone.

Stay organized.

You're more likely to forget things if your home is cluttered or your papers are in a disordered mess. Help yourself keep track of tasks and appointments by writing them down in a notebook, on a calendar or in an electronic planner. Keep your to-do lists up to date. Keep your important, everyday items in the same place where you will always be able to find them. This could include: wallet, keys, glasses and other essential items. Try to limit distractions. Don't do too many things at once.

Sleep well.

Not getting enough sleep has been linked to memory loss. Restless sleep and sleep that gets disturbed often can also negatively affect memory. Make getting enough healthy sleep a priority. Adults should sleep 7 to 9 hours a night on a regular basis. If snoring disrupts sleep, make an appointment to see your healthcare provider. Snoring could be a sign of a sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea.

Manage chronic health problems.

Follow your health care provider's advice for dealing with medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, mental health concerns and obesity. The better you take care of yourself, the better your memory is likely to be. Also, regularly review the medicines you take with your health care provider as some medicines can affect memory.

When to get help for memory loss.

If memory loss affects your ability to do your daily activities, if you notice your memory getting worse, or if a family member or friend is concerned about your memory loss, it's particularly important to get help. Make an appointment with your provider to discuss your concerns.

A BOW OF Gallantry

Just like that, we’re into October…while I love the Summer, this is always a welcome change for me: the populous calendar of events, brisk mornings, vibrant colors in nature, and of course, the tasteful fashion are among the multitude of reasons that the Autumn season is one of my favorite times of the year.

Fall fashion ranks atop the list for many within the industry and outside of it. The colors, fabrics, textures, and pairings all lend themselves to a sophisticated style that looks great on everyone. Though often overlooked, the art of dressing seasonally isn’t difficult to master. This transitional period from Summer to Fall is an exciting time for your closet. Over are the days of just looking for the lightest, most breathable thing you can find, and now you can have some fun with your wardrobe by adding layers, new colors, and exploring fabrics which would be unbearable in the heat of Summer.

If you’re like most men who come into Hampton’s, you have a plethora of blue in your collection. Blue and grey have always been and will always be the two most dominant colors in menswear; however, some additional tones for the season are always appropriate. For the Fall, earth tones, such as olive, burned orange, and burgundy take the stage as colors everyone can wear easily and well. They all work together, or pair with other basics (khaki, denim, navy). Don’t be afraid to push your boundaries and escape the comfort zone a little…chances are, you’ll like it!

When it comes to fabrics, the options are nearly endless for this season. For suits and sportcoats, heavier wools, woolen flannels, and cashmeres are always strong choices. They drape well, are soft and comfortable to wear, and create a timeless look for the wearer. Men have been wearing flannel suits and pants since the original business suits developed, and the look isn’t going anywhere. If you’re lacking this option in your arsenal, consider adding it- you won’t regret it. For outerwear, my personal favorites are cashmere and leather or suede. The style is unending and the durability and function are impeccable. For footwear, it’s time for suedes and boots! Suede shoes and boots can easily be worn all year, but they absolutely shine in the Fall.

Layering is my personal favorite part of colder weather. Sweaters and jackets are the true stars of Autumn and Winter. They’re functional ways to accessorize your outfit without adding any items to carry around, such as a scarf. Cashmere sweaters are the epitome of luxury in terms of knitwear; they’re lightweight, yet provide unmatched warmth when needed, and regulate temperature when indoors so that removal isn’t necessary. A good cashmere sweater is an heirloom piece. Merino wool hails second in popularity to cashmere. Merino offers a similar function, but provides a little less warmth and bulk in comparison to cashmere. Both are stylish options of equal importance, and deserve a place in your cedar chest.

Swing by the store and you’ll see why we love this season so much. The options we have to enhance your closet this Fall and Winter are the best we’ve ever had, and we can’t wait to show you. Like I said before, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone of blue and grey…I can almost guarantee you’ll enjoy it, and so will your wife.

CHECK IN TIME!

From

to

Prior to take off, flight attendants make a point to remind everyone to put on their own oxygen mask before assisting others with theirs. It’s not unreasonable for you to take a similar approach when it comes to keeping yourself in tip-top shape, so that you have the energy (and patience!) to teach at home.

There are countless articles out there about self care you can explore that share all sorts of self-pampering suggestions. They contain a multitude of ideas from getting an occasional manicure to waking up 10 minutes before everyone else to savor a quiet cup of coffee. This month, let’s focus on tips that you can apply to your day to day schooling activities that still pack a punch in terms of self-care for the teacher!

3. Are you connecting with other parents that also school at home? I get it. It’s not always easy to make time to get out socially and spend time with other adults sans kids. Honestly, you don’t always need to. Take advantage of the many homeschool groups out on social media and ask questions you have. Others probably have similar pressing issues on their minds! It’s easy to fall into a rabbit hole of doubt about your process. Having connections with those in a similar scenario with schooling at home can lead to some great discoveries in terms of techniques, lesson ideas and even fun field trips to plan. Remember though, comparing your experience to others can be stressful, so make implementation decisions on ideas you’ve heard based on your own family’s needs.

1. Think about the first few weeks of schooling this season. What doesn’t work that needs adjusting? This is a great time to tweak your approach. Since we are now into fall, you probably don’t want to make MAJOR changes, but little things can make all the difference. For example, maybe the dining room table isn’t cutting it as a great workspace for your kids. Try tray tables at comfy chairs. Are your kids getting antsy in the late morning hours? Maybe lunch needs to be 30 mins earlier. Flexibility is a major plus when schooling at home. Take advantage!

2. Keep it fresh! Research fun activities, videos, etc to keep variety in your days. Do your kids have a favorite hobby or activity you can tie into your lesson plans? For example, if they are avid soccer fans, visit YouTube to find a video about the history of the game and put together a vocabulary or “words to know” list. Maybe they can write a few paragraphs or a poem about their favorite player. Start discussions regarding which teams they’d like to see one day. Encourage them to make posters to cheer them on when they watch the next game. While this seems like something that benefits you more than your kids, well, you’re right! But isn’t it also true that lessons are more enjoyable and a little less stressful when everyone is having fun?

4. What is the family’s sleep schedule like? Maybe more importantly, what is your sleep schedule like? Are you getting enough shut eye? In the flight attendant analogy shared earlier, exchange the thought of oxygen with sleep. If you don’t catch your zzz’s it will be harder to give your all in whatever activities you plan for the next day. For some, lack of sleep can weigh heavily on the amount of patience you have and when schooling at home, you need PLENTY of patience! It’s tempting to check off things from your to-do list after the kiddos are in dreamland, but stick to the advice that many probably shared with you when your kids were born—sleep when the baby sleeps! (Even if they are not babies anymore.)

Creating a positive environment for your child’s growth and education by taking time to reflect on your process is essential. Making necessary adjustments can empower you to navigate new challenges, celebrate successes and give your role as a parent and educator a healthy balance. TIPS ON NAVIGATING CHANGE AS WE AGE

They’ve told us and we get it: we need to keep our bodies strong as we age. The benefits are many and they are obvious! But creating the strength we need to navigate the many changes on the journey ahead is just as important. I call this type of strengthening activity “building the change resilience muscle.” You can’t “see it” in the same way because it’s a mindset, one that supports us in creating a life we want to live in the chapter we are now writing.

We all know people who have this muscle, this mindset. They seem to roll with the punches and go with the flow regardless of what happens. These folks aren’t swallowing happy pills or practicing denial. They are adaptive and resilient because they have a way of thinking and being that allows them to move forward without beating themselves up or getting into a prolonged funk. Case in point: I know a woman in her early 70’s who lost her husband when they were both in their early 50’s, still raising teenagers. She shared with me that with his passing, she recognized the critical choice before her: she could either collapse into her grief and give up on life, or she could find her way forward—one small step at a time. Adaptable and resilient, she chose the latter.

I am inspired by her example and work hard at being that kind of person— one with a strong change resilience muscle. Here’s what I know: every one of us can build this capability. It takes self-awareness and guess what? The willingness to make some inside changes. Here goes:

Finally, at last, accept that everything changes. How much energy have you spent fighting change instead of finding ways to flow with it? You have only to look out your kitchen window to realize that the natural world is in flux, all of the time. Why not flow with it? Start by reminding yourself of the many large and small changes that you’ve not only adapted to but have come to appreciate.

Be diligent about differentiating what you can and cannot change. Be smart about where you expend your energy. Grab a notepad or pull up

a WORD document and start listing the significant things in your life that you can’t change. Maybe it’s certain people in your life, a chronic health condition, and so on. Stare it down, acknowledge your feelings when they come up, then move on to list the many things you CAN change— things like your diet, your exercise, your spiritual practices, the media you consume, the time you spend on activities you enjoy, and so on.

Make peace with yourself.

As the brilliant Brene Brown wisely states: “You either walk inside your story and own it, or you stand outside your story and wrestle with your worthiness.” Befriend yourself, own your feelings, and trust that your authentic self is more than good enough—because it is.

Take no good thing for granted.

Start or wrap up your day by identifying as many “good things” as you can. My summer list often included the hummingbirds that discovered the new feeder, the robust Celebrity tomatoes that flourished, the evening front porch chats with neighbors, and wading in the community pool. So many good things!

Learn from every victory, misstep, and defeat.

There is no perfect life, period. Every life, despite how it may appear from the outside, has its share of victories, missteps and defeats. The beautiful gift of aging is that we can see that now, and we can choose to take the lessons inherent in every experience.

Look for the good in everyone and in every situation.

Tell me I’m getting preachy. Well, I’m okay with that. I have come to know that something shifts within me when I spend my days on this earth looking for the good and shushing judgment and negativity when they show up in me. Thanks, mom, for such a beautiful lesson that supports my change resilience muscle!

ENHANCED BENEFITS FOR 529 PLAN ACCOUNT BENEFICIARIES

Family members who planned ahead for college costs may now have an additional benefit available with the 529 college savings plans. For families that have funds left over in their 529 accounts after college was paid for, there have historically only been a few ways to extract the funds. Each way has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Gains that are removed from the accounts and not used for higher education costs have always been taxed and hit with an additional 10% penalty. Your contributions always come back without taxation because the 529 plan was funded with after tax dollars. Another key point to remember is that the beneficiary can be changed to another child in the family or a person of direct lineage to that child and the money can be used in the same tax-free manner.

The new twist with 529 plans since the Secure Act 2.0 was passed is that you can potentially draw up to $35,000 from the 529 plan and have it moved to a Roth IRA in the beneficiary’s name. The ability to swap out college dollars that have accumulated, for retirement dollars, is a substantial upgrade in how the plans work. Now remember, the Roth is a longer-term retirement-based account, so it is important to keep the monies invested and working. Gains removed from the Roth account while under 59.5 years of age will subject the beneficiary to the same penalty and taxes that the 529 plan would have generated. The cherry on top with the Secure Act 2.0 is that you can now use the funds for anything in retirement via the Roth and never pay a dime in taxes while getting years of tax deferred growth and withdrawals.

The upgrade to these plans by way of the Secure Act 2.0 is a good thing and gives more flexibility to the account holders and beneficiaries. It is important to stay updated about changes in the retirement and savings landscape. At Marzano Capital Group, we strive to educate our clients along the way. If you want an education about how 529 plans work or how they have changed, please do not hesitate to reach out!

3 WAYS TO BE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY THIS HALLOWEEN

Halloween can be one of the most fun and festive times of the year for some people. It is the time to get a new costume, eat as much candy as possible, and fill your home with ghoulish decorations. Then, add in trick-or-treating, parties, and pumpkin carving, Halloween is a spooktacular time. However, there is also a downside to the holiday.

October 31st isn’t the friendliest In terms of sustainability and being environmentally-conscious. There are newly bought costumes and decorations, candy wrappers, and plastic cups, plates, and other materials. Together, these items create tons of waste that is put into landfills, causing environmental impacts. These spine-chilling realizations can be fixed. There are many ways for Halloween to be a sustainable and environmentally-friendly holiday, including these tips.

TRICK-OR-TREAT BAGS

DECORATIONS & COSTUMES

Reuse as much as possible when it comes to decorations and costumes. Household items can easily be turned into creepy creations. For example, cardboard boxes can be made into tombstones and jack-o-lanterns. Netting from bags of oranges, leaves and branches from the yard, toilet paper rolls, tin cans, plastic bags, and laundry baskets are great materials to use. One easy idea is using a hula hoop, black string, and paint and turning the objects into an eerie spider web. As always, don’t buy new decorations each year. If you want something new from a store, see if you can’t make it from the materials you already have at home.

As for costumes, make your own, as well, or borrow from family and friends. Cut old clothes, sheets, etc. into outfits. Glue craft supplies to old sheets, paint the costume the color of your choosing; there are numerous materials you can use to build your outfit with just a little creativity. If you do need to get a new item, visit a rental shop, thrift store, consignment store, or Facebook marketplace before shopping at a big-box store. Also, don’t be afraid to break down old costumes and use various pieces to form new ones. Let your and your kids’ imaginations run wild and you never know what you may come up with.

Trick-or-treat bags are another Halloween mainstay that can be homemade or used year after year. Maybe your child’s trick-or-treat bag is a plastic pumpkin that is several years old. Pillowcases, buckets, canvas bags, or upcycled paint cans make great options. Another twist is by sewing pieces of fabrics together in a fun, Halloween shape. A favorite among many people is to make a duct tape bag. Duct tape is a multi-purposed object. It can be transformed into hundreds of items. I have seen wallets, shoes, and bookmarks, and more. To make a duct tape trick-or-treat bag, all you need to do is choose two rolls of tape to use. First, lay strips of one roll facedown, side by side on a flat surface. Then, lay the other pattern, design side up, across the other pieces. Once you have a large rectangle, trim the edges and fold in half. Using additional pieces of duct tape, seal the side edges. You will need to push the corners to the inside of the bag. Also, add duct tape across the inside corners of the bag. Finally, place one strip of duct tape around the top of the bag and cut four pieces of duct tape to make the handles. Place two strips of tape back to back and then attach to the inside of the bag in an upside-down U shape for the handles.

CARVING PUMPKINS

Carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. However, it is a tradition that can create some problems after the holiday is finished. First, buy your pumpkin from a local farmer or farmers’ market. Your pumpkin will more than likely be fresher and riper than purchasing it at a grocery store. Plus, you will be helping local business owners. Once October 31st ends, don’t throw away your jack-o-lantern. Instead, remove all the seeds and compost it. You can also reuse it as food for local wildlife, feed the seeds to birds, or roast them for yourself.

While Halloween is a mysterious, ghostly, and lively night, it can have some negative impacts on our world. By applying these three ways, October 31st can become an eco-friendly and still creepy, fun night.

EASY DOES IT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF A STIFLING AND HUMID JULY DAY, I DECIDED NOT TO GO HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

Home... picture postcard perfect New England covered in a light blanket of snow and filled with Norman Rockwell-esque good cheer. Or something close. Even so, with Jingle Bells in the air, warm fires, and a much-loved family to welcome me, I decided to forego the annual holiday trip home.

I quickly texted my sister, explaining that what I most wanted was to spend time with the people who have shaped and filled my life for as long as I can remember. I wanted less frivolity and more listening. Less jolly and more genuine. Less running about, and more tranquility. I wanted to grab a peaceful, leisurely lunch out before the super-charged holiday crowds would make getting a table difficult. She got it. Immediately.

How about you? Are you stressing over the season that is just around the corner? I don’t want that in my life anymore, and so I’ve culled a threepart “Easy Does It” strategy for the season:

PART ONE: PLANNING

Plan ahead—as in start right now, October. Think in terms of pacing yourself and doing a little at a time. Make a holiday spreadsheet, or buy a pretty notebook and brainstorm categories such as:

• Where you will spend the holidays

• Gift list and budget

• Holiday hosting, menus, and recipes

• Traditions to keep, refresh, or put on hold

• Decorating scheme/purchases to be made

• Calls to make; cards to send

And so on.

Focus where you need to and begin to “calendar” your prep tasks. For example, you might visit the attic or the garage and begin pulling the decorations you will use this year, then consign, donate, or store those you won’t. I do this every year, right after Halloween.

PART TWO: NURTURING

Create a holiday calm space—Maybe it’s just a corner in your sunroom, or your she-shed; a place where you can catch your breath and take in the beauty of the season privately and quietly. Fill this space, however tiny or large with the holiday decorations you most enjoy. In a small reading room, my sister displays our late mom’s 1960’s ceramic tree and ornaments handmade by her children and grandchildren.

Take care of yourself—Timeless counsel, I know. And now, as well as during the holidays, it’s important to continue those healthy body, mind, and spirit practices, so that you can be present to the joys of the season. If you need a tiny nudge, do your workout, then reward yourself with something you truly enjoy.

Make friends with imperfection—unlike that picture-perfect postcard, few things in real life are in fact perfect. Perfect doesn’t matter. Remember that you cannot control everything and that it is the intention, the love, and the joy you infuse in your holiday experience that matters.

Practice “In the scheme of things” thinking—when you do start to fret, catch yourself and tap into perspective. Ask: “In the scheme of things, how much will this really matter?” Be willing to graciously go with the flow when the unexpected happens.

Lean into kindness—people may have a short fuse and frazzled nerves as they navigate the season. Tap into the fact that you can relate and cut them some slack!

Practice respect and tolerance—sure, it’s a whole lot easier when the people you love and care about hold the same beliefs, views, and approach to the holidays. But that’s generally not the case. I’m having a flashback from the year my stepson brought home, his thengirlfriend who insisted on bringing her own food. After a moment of thinking “What? Is she just trying to be contrary?” I suspended judgment, took a deep breath and remembered how grateful I was that they chose to join us. Easy does it!

PART THREE: LIVING IT

VICTORY OVER VICTIM MENTALITY

We have all been victimized in our lives. Maybe bad things happened in your childhood. You had a tough breakup. You lost your job. You suffered the loss of a loved one. Bad things happen to all of us. How we respond to these things makes a big difference.

Have you ever been guilty of having a victim mentality? This comes into play when you blame everyone else for what happens in your world. You think that the future only holds bad things for you. The deception, “It’s never my fault”, is at the core of the victim mentality.

This may sound strange, but sometimes people get comfortable being the victim. They grow used to feeling sorry for themselves and inviting others to join them. They like having pity parties. I know I love a good pity party occasionally, complete with Hallmark movies and ice cream.

The Bible validates that there are definitely victims in life:

“But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.”

PSALM 10:14

This verse tells us that, if we commit ourselves to his higher power, He will help us to overcome obstacles! God does not want the moments when you have been victimized to become a mindset that will affect everything that happens after in your life. He wants your mindset to be that of a victor! He wants your mindset to reflect, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Jesus is the ultimate example of someone who was victimized but never had a victim mentality. Can you fathom everything that he endured? He was whipped, mocked, a crown of thorns was put on his head, and then his hands and feet were nailed to a cross.

“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth. When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.”

1 PETER 2:22-2

We all face struggles in our lives, but we can choose our attitude in the midst of them. We can wallow in self-pity, take no responsibility, and allow the victim mentality to cast blame on everyone and everything around us, or we can start taking responsibility for our lives and our actions and become a victor instead of a victim!

REFLECT

Do you ever tend to slip into a victim mentality? If so, what will you do to be victorious over the victim mentality?

WELCOMING YOU LIKE FAMILY

A cozy place to gather for a mouthwatering breakfast or lunch, CC’s Café & Catering in Denver also offers a warm, family feel, courtesy of owners—and sisters—Crystal Chudoba and Angel Schoenhardt.

Join them for daily lunch specials, soups, salads, and a tasty variety of specialty sandwiches, and you’ll be so pleased, you’ll soon be calling to book their catering services for a special event.

After a difficult year of personal loss and career challenges, the timing was perfect for the sisters to explore a new adventure. “During Covid we lost our mother and our grandmother, 32 days apart,” says Crystal. “Angel lost her father-in-law in 2019, so it was a time of enormous change for our families.” The two opened CC’s Café & Catering in January of 2021, and have embraced combining their individual talents with a shared goal of spreading love and laughter!

A culinary arts teacher in both New York, and locally at Maiden High School, Crystal knew the food side of the business well, while Angel’s experience with managed care gave them the organizational skills to guide a successful small business team.

Traditional breakfast and lunch hours are 7:30 a.m.3:00 p.m. daily, but the café has transitioned to their Fall hours of Monday through Saturday 7:30 a.m.2:00 p.m., and Sunday 7:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Starting your morning off with a few of their favorites is the perfect start to a crisp fall day!

Crystal shares their most beloved breakfast order is the CC’s Special, which includes two eggs, home fries, toast, and your choice of meat. Breakfast wraps are also very popular, along with newer breakfast items including omelets and build-your-own breakfast bowls.

You’ll also find some personal nods on the menu, and a strong helping of family ties.

“For lunch, the ‘Mimi’ is a definite favorite— and named after our mother,” says Crystal. “That’s a slowroasted, sliced beef sandwich on a kaiser roll topped with salt and caraway seeds, served with a side of Au jus and horseradish sauce. In Buffalo, where we’re from, there isn’t a restaurant that doesn’t have that on their menu—but it’s called a Beef on Weck in Buffalo!”

CC’s also serves a sandwich called the ‘Jear Bear’ which is a Philly steak or chicken sandwich with provolone cheese, served on a sub roll. This customer favorite was named after Crystal and Angel’s brother, who passed away a year ago.

“As you can see, when we decided on our menu, each family member got to choose an item to add, or added

in their memory—and had it named after them,” Crystal says. Staying true to the local landscape, CC’s only serves Black Powder Coffee out of Mooresville, NC, which means their coffee, iced coffee, lattes, and espresso are all delicious!

“When we opened, we were dedicated to also supporting other local small businesses. That was very important to us,” adds Crystal.

Although most of their catering business happens in the Denver area, they are happy to serve any area within an approximate 30-mile radius.

“There are great catering options and restaurants in the area, but I think our prices set us aside from anyone else,” says Crystal. “We try our best to offer affordable pricing for our community.”

She and Angel are both inspired by the warmth of the people around Denver and the Lake Norman area, and the overwhelming community support they have received since opening.

“We have the best customers and some loyal ‘regulars’—and people have been welcoming and honest with their opinions. We know not everyone will like our food, but I think our menu offers a wide enough variety for all to enjoy. Even our gluten-free folks.”

CC’s Café & Catering is conveniently located at 3740 NC16 Business in Denver, NC, 704-966-4317, or browse their menu and request a catering quote for your next event at ccscateringservice.com. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @ccscafeandcatering for delicious specials and a glimpse of what’s tempting customers most at the moment!

A RELIABLE FRIEND for LOCAL TRAVELERS!

Knowing the importance of being on time and drama-free when planning travel for business or pleasure, Jordan Goldman found the perfect niche for his genuine people skills and keen attention to detail.

“I moved here to the Lake Norman area five years ago from Long Island, New York, to be closer with family who reside here,” explains Jordan. “Since I wasn’t familiar with the area, I thought the best way to learn about the Charlotte area—and make some money—was to become an Uber/Lyft driver in my spare time.”

Within just a few months he became extremely familiar with the nearby communities, and says he was intrigued by the amount of transplants moving so quickly to the booming area around Lake Norman.

“In the beginning of 2021, once I felt comfortable driving again after the height of the pandemic, I noticed there weren’t many Uber drivers back on the roads,” adds Jordan. “And that’s when it hit me: Why give a large portion of my money to a corporate company when I can keep more of it for myself?”

Jump ahead to the summer of 2021, and that’s when Jordan’s Transportation was officially launched!

“My fiancée, Mary, and I put together a plan to start a business focusing only on local and airport transportation,” he says. “Mary assisted me in getting my LLC, and it was off to the races. We splashed my business cards in every hotel, supermarket, and wherever we felt my contact information could be seen around town!”

Within days, Jordan’s phone wouldn’t stop ringing, and the business grew quickly.

Fast forward to today, and Jordan knows how blessed he is.

“The clientele I have are just the most amazing people, and I’ve been so lucky—to the point I don’t have to do Uber/Lyft anymore, and now I pretty much stick to airport rides.”

While Jordan’s main travel territory is anywhere from Huntersville to Statesville, on the east side of the lake, he will also travel to Sherrills Ford and Troutman, and currently has many customers on the Denver side of the lake as well.

Jordan does believe the key element that sets him apart from other local transportation companies is his excellent customer service.

“I tend to get personal with clients who love to talk,” he says. “But I also do have respect for the business travelers who are catching up on work while I’m driving. I’m reliable and prompt to my airport pick-ups and drop-offs, which I know is important, and the one thing I can definitely say is that my rates are very reasonable!”

Jordan’s Transportation is available to travel seven days a week, from 4:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Call or text Jordan directly to schedule a trip at 516-765-6420, and Google Jordan’s Transportation for even more amazing reviews!

“Five Stars!! Our group used Jordan three separate times while staying in the Lake Norman area for vacation. He offers exceptional communication, an impeccable car, great conversation, helpful tips on the area, and a very friendly personality. We will definitely use him again next time we are in town! Highly recommend! Thank you Jordan!”

“Jordan was highly recommended by many moms on a local Facebook group, and he took me to the airport for a trip, and picked me up when I returned. He is polite, prompt, has very good communication skills, and is super friendly. I’ll never use Uber again for airport rides!”

CRISPY GRILLED CHICKEN WINGS

For this month, I wanted to share a great recipe for some pretty simple, super crispy grilled chicken wings. These are on the weekly rotation in my house, especially during the fall for watching football. My favorite flavor as of lately is a Spicy Japanese BBQ Sauce on the wings; this combined with the Holy Voodoo seasoning and that char from the fire on the grill creates an incredible flavor that will be a gameday hit!

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 dozen separated chicken wings (scale recipe up for larger servings)

• Meat Church Holy Voodoo seasoning

• Bachans Spicy Japanese BBQ Sauce

• Sesame seeds

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Fire up your grill to high heat. I typically do these on my Kamado grill using lump charcoal running around 400500 degrees.

• Set up two cooking zones on your grill; in the kamado, I have one grate low right over the coals and one grate elevated a little higher. If your grates do not separate – have hot coals on one side of the grill and leave a cool side to finish the wings.

• While the grill is getting heated up, pat the wings dry, apply the Holy Voodoo seasoning generously and let the seasoning adhere for at least 15 minutes.

• Throw the wings directly over the coals and let them cook for about 15 minutes (depending on grill temp) – flipping halfway until you get some good char and they are temping around 150.

• Once there is good char all over the wing and the temperature is getting close, move to the indirect side of the grill and let them finish. I like to let them cook until they temp around 175185 to be nice and crispy. But, if you’re in a time crunch, poultry is good to go at 165.

• Once the wings are finished up, place them in a large mixing bowl and add at least a ½ cup of the Spicy Bachans BBQ Sauce and toss the wings until completely coated.

• Lastly, add some sesame seeds on top for a garnish and you’re ready to enjoy! The Holy Voodoo Cajun seasoning complements the Spicy Japanese BBQ sauce perfectly for a different type of wing flavor to switch it up from the typical Buffalo or BBQ sauce!

THE ART OF SAYING NO!

“No” is just two letters but saying it can feel really hard. Whenever someone asks you to take on a project or task, your first inclination might be to blurt out, “Yes! I’d be happy to!” Where, in reality, you may feel the opposite. Maybe you’d rather be doing about a thousand other things. Or maybe you’re okay with saying yes, but it’s not the best thing for your bandwidth or mental health. The good news is that saying no is a skill you can sharpen. The more you say no, the more natural it’ll feel.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO SAY NO?

Below are three things you can do to decide whether to say no.

1. Establish your values and priorities.

Visualize your life as a pie, and the components of your life as slices (career, spiritual, family, friends, community, hobbies, travel, health). Ask yourself, “What are my main things?” and list your top five. Once you are clear on your priorities, consider saying no to any commitments and pursuits that didn’t make the cut.

2. Use the “Heck Yeah or No” method.

Derek Sivers suggests a “Heck Yeah or No” method. Actually, he uses a different word, but you get the idea. If someone asks you to do something and your first reaction is “Heck Yeah!”, then do it. If it doesn’t excite you, then say no.

3. Ask yourself these questions.

Your knee-jerk response to a request may be to say yes. Make a habit of not giving an automatic yes all the time. Respond with, “I’ll think about it” or “Can I get back to you on that?” to give yourself a chance to think about it. You can then ask yourself these questions to assess opportunity costs.

• Do I have the time, energy, and money for this at the moment?

• Do I want to do this?

• Will it keep me from focusing on something that is more important?

• Will this add value to my life?

• Is this aligned with my values and priorities?

• Am I saying yes, only because I am scared of saying no?

SAYING “NO” NICELY

You say no to a request while still being kind, appreciative, and respectful. Below are some strategies to help!

Be crystal clear.

A wishy-washy answer can make the conversation awkward and confuse the person making the request. Be clear with your no, so that nobody is left wondering what you are trying to say.

Extend genuine gratitude for the ask.

You might have a hard time saying no because the request or person asking means a lot to you. Show appreciation for thinking of you but stand firm. You might say something like, “Thank you for thinking of me” or “I appreciate you coming to me. It means a lot.”

Give a brief explanation—if you want to. No can be a complete sentence. But if you’d like to offer an explanation, keep it short and sweet.

Practice saying no.

Practice makes perfect. Saying no as often as you can is a great way to get better at it and more comfortable with saying the word.

Don’t apologize.

We often start with, “I’m sorry, but…” as we think it sounds more polite. But apologizing sounds weaker. Be firm and unapologetic about guarding your time.

Saying no is an important form of self-care. It helps create space in our schedules to rest and recharge and engage in activities that are most important to us. Ultimately, saying no gives us greater navigation over our lives which helps us to build more fulfilling, meaningful lives.

WALKING AWAY THE POUNDS & GAINING A

NEW

PERSPECTIVE

ONE OF THE MANY BENEFITS OF WALKING

For most people, it feels as if we always need to have a destination when it comes to walking. We are walking from the parking lot to the store, walking from the beginning of the path in the park to reach the end, or walking from point A to get to point B, all with efficiency and a goal in mind. But, what if you just walk to gain a better lifestyle, add more exercise into your day, and get a clearer mind?

Walking is one of the best ways to lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, keep your joints strong, improve your mental health, and live longer. Not only that, this form of exercise can lower your blood pressure, help your heart, and reduce your risk of chronic diseases.

During the summer, I increased my daily walking to at least 30 minutes, the ideal amount suggested for each day. I enjoyed this time as I was able to change up my pace all the while walking in a silent, peaceful atmosphere where I was able to think and just let my brain relax. Those 30 minutes were a break from reality. Also, my waist got a little smaller with each step. These are not the only benefits I received each day. In fact, walking any amount each day produces a very positive outcome, including the advantages below.

1. Regular walking burns calories and reduces fat. Together, this can increase your metabolism, as well as burn 200 calories in 30 minutes. Start with a simple routine to get your time and steps in. It is recommended to get 10,000 steps a day. Start out slow and then move to a faster pace, speed walking. If you are walking outside, add in hills and varying types of landscape.

2. In addition to burning calories, walking clears a person’s mind and improves their mood. After a long, tough day, there is nothing better than to go on a quick walk. It doesn’t have to be long; 10 minutes is just enough time to lift your spirits.

Doctor

on Demand Diet, states that “regular walking actually modifies your nervous system so much that you’ll experience a decrease in anger and hostility.” In fact, during the winter months, a little bit of sunlight outside and walking will help with seasonal depression. Also, walking has been proven to reduce a person’s stress levels by lowering the hormone cortisol. Studies show that just 10 minutes decrease anxiety and depression, while increasing focus and creativity. In addition, 60 minutes lowers activity in brain regions that are involved in stress processing. In fact, it will also release endorphins, creating a better mood.

3. Another advantage of walking is that it tames your sweet tooth. Studies from the University of Exeter in England affirmed that 15 minutes can diminish chocolate cravings and unnecessary eating in stressful situations, as well as sugar intake.

4. Just like other hormones, walking increases melatonin, thus allowing you a better night’s sleep. There have also been found positive effects on sleep quality and length of sleep, all thanks to this particular type of exercise, as well as a reduction in joint pain which can cause sleep problems. There is an increase in blood flow to tense areas and muscles surrounding your joints get stronger with walking.

5. Not only does the increase of blood flow improve your joints, it can also decrease your risk for varicose veins. Dr. Luis Navarro, founder and director of The Vein Treatment Center in New York City, explains that “the venous system includes a circulatory section known as ‘the second heart,’ which is formed by muscles, veins, and valves located in our calf and foot. This system works to push blood back up to the heart and lungs - and walking strengthens this secondary circulatory system by strengthening and preserving leg muscle, which boosts healthy blood flow.” Sounds like an advantage to me!

Now that school is back in session, my schedule has become busier than it was during the summer. However, one thing is for sure, I am going to make every effort to put walking back into my daily routine. After all, who doesn’t want a healthy lifestyle that can be accomplished with a simple, calming activity?

FEEDING THOSE IN NEED THROUGH LOVE & TEAMWORK

WHAT BEGAN AS A SMART BUSINESS MOVE DURING THE PANDEMIC LOCKDOWN FOR RESTAURANTS HAS TRANSFORMED INTO SO MUCH MORE –A LABOR OF LOVE REALLY, AS RESTAURANTS IN THE LAKE NORMAN AREA HAVE DONATED BOTH TIME AND NOURISHMENT TO NEIGHBORS WHO NEED IT MOST.

“When the Governor closed down all restaurants in March 2020, we found ourselves –like other small businesses –standing around waiting for someone to call in an order,” explains Nelson Bass, owner of Blu Star Grill. By April 2020, we were in the middle of the lockdown and realized we couldn’t use all the supplies we had purchased, and it seemed like a shame to throw away food.”

Nelson soon received a call from Davidson Methodist Church, offering him enough money to feed 100 homeless neighbors for one night, in the Charlotte area.

Long story short, it was an amazing idea!

“They had a little money, and I had some food that needed to be used,” Nelson adds. “We teamed up a couple of times and after that, my wife, Carolyn, and I decided we needed to do that on a regular basis. Since the Blu Star dining room was empty (as no one was allowed to eat inside), we set up a production line using the dining room tables and went from there!”

As members of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, Nelson and Carolyn knew of Heath Burchett’s work with Watchmen of the Streets, an outreach ministry of Habit Missions, and they immediately reached out to offer meals for his volunteers to

deliver to homeless neighbors. Their production line was already in place –and they were ready to grow!

Even after they were able to re-open the dining room at Blu Star Grill to the public, the ministry lived on.

“Fast forward to late 2022, and we were still doing meals for WOTS to distribute,” says Nelson. “The need for food keeps growing, and even though we had pushed out more than 2,500 meals by then, it was just a drop in the bucket compared to what’s needed. My wife and I are very blessed in life, and we survived all the lockdowns, coming out whole on the other side and doing a great business in the restaurant.”

But, the reality was that they couldn’t do enough alone. Nelson thought of his many friends in the restaurant business, who had also survived the pandemic and were also grateful.

“I contacted Nick Bonarrigo, owner of Mi Amiche, told him about our mission, and his response was ‘Yes! When do you need it?’” Nelson explains. “I then visited Stacy White at Famous Toastery across the street from my restaurant, and she was onboard immediately. Together, we were donating more meals as a group than I could by myself.”

“Fast forward again a few more months, and once again we realized we needed more meals. We talked to Wes Choplin at Choplin’s and discovered he had donated to WOTS some years back and was ready to jump on board with us,” says Nelson. “Now, we have four restaurants providing high-quality restaurant meals for our homeless neighbors who are cared for by WOTS.”

Nelson adds that while they are all competing for customers in the same market, each restaurant is different. From the classic American style of Blu Star Grill and Italian flair of Mi Amiche, to the freshest breakfast, brunch and lunch options at Famous Toastery and delectable seafood and steaks at Choplin’s, all want to give back to the community that supports their local businesses.

And, the group is always looking for like-minded local restaurants to join their efforts! All four dining establishments will have gift baskets available from October 1st through November 4th where customers can buy $5 raffle tickets for a chance to win. Each basket contains $600 worth of gift cards from local retailers who want to help raise money for our homeless neighbors, and 100% of ticket sales go to WOTS to purchase sleeping bags, tarps, tents and other supplies that are vital to help our friends survive the cold winter ahead.

Stay tuned for LKN Magazine’s own fundraiser to add to what these amazing restaurants are doing for Watchmen of the Streets! For more information on becoming involved with Watchmen of the Streets and the amazing efforts of these fine restaurants, contact Heath Burchett at Habitmissions@gmail.com or visit Watchmenofthestreets.com.

Show your own support for local by visiting Blu Star Grill at 120 Marketplace Avenue in Mooresville, Mi Amiche at 350 Morrison Plantation Parkway in Mooresville, Famous Toastery at 134 Mooresville Commons Way in Mooresville, and Choplin’s at 19700 One Norman Boulevard in Cornelius, and follow them on Facebook.

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE: MASADA

Masada was built by Herod the Great who was king of Judea during the first century BC. He was looking for a getaway place where he could rest and have peace and quiet. It also gave him a secure location if he needed it.

King Herod built two palaces on the top of a mesa about 1400 feet above the Dead Sea on the eastern edge of the Judean desert. It had a magnificent view, and he built a wall around the whole complex. It consisted of about 18 acres. He had everything there including hot baths with mosaic floors. This was a real luxury when you remember this was in the middle of the desert. Water in the desert was not easy to come by.

King Herod had his engineers build cisterns on the side of the mountain to collect the water and then had slaves carry the water up the mountain. The reservoir he built would hold over 10 million gallons of water.

King Herod built his palace, so it was a Royal Citadel, an almost impenetrable fort. You could walk up the trail to Masada, but it was 3.8 miles long. Fortunately for us, they had a cable car and after three minutes of swinging in the air, we were there.

There was a Jewish writer called Josephus who became a noted historian. Much of what we know came from Josephus, especially the story behind Masada. King Herod did not use Masada often. It became famous after the Jewish people made one last stand against the Roman invaders.

The Jewish people lost the war, and many ran away in retreat. Some of them ended up in Masada. They were able to live there quite comfortably until the Roman commander decided to finish the job. Lucius Silva was assigned this task.

How do you fight a war against survivors holed up in a place like Masada, on top of a hill with a wall around it? You lay siege to it. But that didn’t really work because Masada had everything, food, water, and shelter. The Romans would have to build a ramp and bring up a Wall Buster. Yes! They did have Wall Busters at that time! They were huge structures on wheels that could move up the ramp to the wall and using a mechanical advantage, swing a rod into the wall until it gave way. Sounds simple enough. But the Jews had other ideas. They did their best to prevent the ramp from being built. They had the military advantage of shooting downhill at the Romans. This slowed them until they took the slaves, who were Jewish and put them on the front lines as they built the ramp. The

The Romans rolled up the Wall Buster and smashed through the wall. They found all the people had died from suicide except one person who

This is quite a story and they ended up making a movie about it. It is so powerful to look down at the area where the Romans set up their camp,

It is hard to imagine the thoughts that the Jews must have had as they watched this hill being built and their future being spelled out for them. The soldiers must have wondered why the siege was being done since

Was it worth it? Who knows! But the job was completed, and history

WATCHING THE BOATS GO PAST

There are so many sayings about boats. “The best boat is the one your friend owns.” Or, “A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money.” And I’ve always liked, “The two best days you own a boat are the day you bring it home and the day you sell it.”

I’ve never owned a boat, but I love riding on other people’s boats. Here at the lake I watch all the different kinds driving past. I like the low-tothe-water bass fishing boats with huge engines that scream around the lake and then stop in a cove and fish for a few minutes before racing to another fishing spot. I am pretty amazed by how close those guys get to docks and moored structures using their trolling motors. They drive the boat with their feet while also fishing. That’s multi-tasking if I’ve ever seen it. If they were chewing gum at the same time too I feel like they’d get into more accidents.

Then I see a fair amount of middle console fishing boats. I thought those were more made for the ocean, but I have to remind myself that I don’t drive boat and don’t know anything about them. I can’t imagine people are using them for deep sea fishing on the lake, but maybe they’re hauling in massive catfish or something.

The pontoon is the boat that makes the most sense to me. It’s the minivan of the lake. No one will confuse it for a sleek sports car, but it is the most logical choice. You can pile all of your friends onto this floating living room, and it’s tough to go fast enough to get yourself in any trouble. I watched a guy on a pontoon drive right through the middle of the shoal markers the other day and thought to myself, “That guy either knows exactly what he’s doing or he has no clue what he’s doing.” He emerged unscathed as far as I could tell, so either he’s smart or lucky. I’m not sure which is better.

The boat that makes the least sense to me on the lake are the enormous yacht-like boats. Where are people taking them? Are they sleeping on them overnight somewhere? There are so many bridges that those boats wouldn’t be able to fit underneath that they can’t be going all that far. I’d guess that the only reason to own one of these huge boats is that you really, really enjoy owning a huge boat. I like watching them come through the main channel because they’re always being followed by a swarm of jet skiers launching off their wake. I see the power they produce as their wakes crash on shore and I wonder how much it costs to fill them up with gas.

The loudest boats that come through are the long cigarette boats that race up and down the main channel throwing huge rooster tails while their engine noise rises and falls with the chop. I understand the appeal of riding on a boat like that. Going fast is fun. It’s definitely not as fun for everyone else on the lake, but I suppose we can all watch them go by and calculate in our heads how much that boat costs to operate and feel a little better about our own choices.

Speaking of expensive boats, my favorite boats would be surf boats. They look sleek and can accommodate as many people as you can pack on them, plus a day on the lake of surfing is tons of fun. I stopped at the boat dealer on a whim once while killing some time and saw the prices on the surf and wakeboard boats. I asked the boat dealer if those were the real prices or if it’s like a jewelry store in New York where the prices on everything are wildly inflated to make you think you’re getting a deal. No, he said, that’s what they sell for. I’m good to continue to just sit on the dock and watch them.
