IF YOU’RE DREAMING OF LAKE VIEWS AND A LAID-BACK ROUTINE, GET TO KNOW THE LAKE NORMAN RV RESORT AND TINY HOMES OF LAKE NORMAN.
Hello and welcome to our latest issue of LKN Magazine! As we dive into summer, there is so much to celebrate this month, I am thrilled to share some highlights with you.
I’ll start by introducing you to my mom! She is such an amazing person inside and out! While that is me pushing her on the swing, she has always been the one pushing me! She’s my biggest cheerleader, and supporter no matter what my latest idea may be! She’s a mover and a shaker, and the busiest person I know… yet she will always make time for the needs of others above her own. In fact, she plays a crucial role in our magazine’s distribution, along with my stepdad. We entrust them with some of our most important and fast-moving spots, and their hard work and dedication are truly appreciated. My sweet mama is well-known for her smile, her love for God, family, friends, neighbors, and the community. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! I love you!
I can’t help but reminisce about my dad, who played a significant role in the distribution of Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family for over 12 years. He took his job seriously and made many friends along the way. Although he is no longer with us, I know he’s cheering our team on from heaven and wishing he could be here to help.
In this issue, we’re excited to feature TINY HOMES OF LAKE NORMAN , a unique concept that offers a one-of-a-kind experience. With more time to enjoy the outdoors and less time spent cleaning the inside, tiny homes are becoming increasingly popular. Be sure to schedule a tour and learn more from their story on page 28
Our foodie review for May is THE FOUNDRY AT TWIN MILLS CLUB in Trilogy, a place that holds a special place in my heart as my mom and stepdad live there. I can never resist indulging in their Millionaire Burger or Stir Fry—both bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. And if you have a sweet tooth, you must try their amazing Croissant Bread Pudding—it’s simply divine! Trust me, once you discover The Foundry, it will become a regular on your list of must-visit restaurants. Check out the full foodie review on page 44 to learn more about their delectable offerings and unique ambiance that make dining at The Foundry a truly memorable experience.

Our team has the pleasure of engaging in life planning conversations with clients and potential clients often. We consider this trust a great privilege. One of the most rewarding aspects of our role as financial advisors is helping folks determine their ”number.”
A recent conversation with a potential client comes to mind. In the initial discovery meeting they point blank asked, “How much money should we have before we walk away from work?”
The response naturally was, “This depends on the lifestyle you want to live. Not only today, but also in retirement.” We began to drill more into their spending goals. It was fulfilling to see their mindset shift as we continued our conversation. A simple response helped this married couple understand there is no single magic ‘number’ to reach before they can retire. Simply put, your “number” will be driven by your lifestyle/spending.
It is our duty to assist investors in understanding and estimating how much they need to accumulate to live the lifestyle of their dreams. Every person is unique and has different goals to pursue. We pride ourselves on being a value-add partner in this subject matter.
For instance, let us say an investor is saving in their 401k and on track to accumulate a large amount of wealth in this retirement account. However, they have other more immediate goals. What if they have a goal of spending $30k on an anniversary trip in 5 years or to purchase a lake property before they reach retirement?
In our opinion, investors should have multiple buckets allocated based on the time horizon for each goal. It is a top priority to invest for your long-term retirement, but what about the milestones you would like to hit along the way? This is where a professional team can come into the fold and help you design a road map.
“It is our duty to assist investors in understanding and estimating how much they need to accumulate to live the lifestyle of their dreams.”
Listen up Lake Norman, WE NEED A TRADER JOE’S!
TJ’s is doing it right and we need to bring that happy shopping experience closer to our community.
Trader Joe’s is an “icing on the cake” grocery store. You cannot necessarily purchase all of your items there, but it certainly takes food up a notch! From the variety of foods to the people who work there...TJ’s provides a shopping experience! It is not just your mundane, obligatory trip to the grocery store.
Charlotte currently has 2 locationsUniversity and Uptown. A 30+ minute drive and parking can be a nightmare. If we had a location in Denver (ideal since I live here), Cornelius, Huntersville or even Mooresville, I would go weekly.
If you have not been, do yourself a favor and go! It may be overwhelming at first, but once you figure out what you love to buy there, it’s like riding a bike - you know what to do, but it brings a new adventure every time.
• Take your time. Especially if you are a first-timer. Browse. Ask questions - the employees love to chat about new items and their favorites.
• Contrary to popular belief, just because it comes from Trader Joe’s does not mean it is healthy! (Note: this same rule applies for Earth Fare and Whole Foods too)
• Like everything else, Trader Joe’s prices have increased, but are still quite reasonable.
• Realize that they do have seasonal items. Items that you love and then are discontinued, only to find that occasionally they come back months later. I am not sure why, but just roll with it.
• I typically do not buy produce at Trader Joe’s. Prices are not fantastic on produce and you need to keep an eye on expiration dates.
CARDS. For all occasions, and they are only $.99 – compared to $5.99 at other stores… for a card?!?
DIPS. Specifically hummus, the vegan cashew pesto, and avocado tzatziki dip. Technically that is 3 items, but we will call it one.
RIDGE CUT POTATO CHIPS. 3 ingredients. Potatoes, sunflower oil, sea salt. Sunflower oil is not ideal, but compared to other chips, these are a win!
SUN-DRIED TOMATOES. In a bag, not in oil. Absolutely delicious and full of flavor. Add to salads, side dishes, on top of eggs, etc. This is also what I use in my sweet potato salad.
DILL PICKLES. My daughter LOVES pickles. Most pickles in the stores have added food dyes and preservatives. You can find some good ones at local farmers markets or TJs pickles, which use turmeric for coloring.
CONDIMENTS. Again, technically 3 items but organic ketchup, whole grain and dijon mustards, and organic mayo. Minimal ingredients and all ones you can pronounce.
GOLDEN ROUNDS CRACKERS. My people love the cousin of this cracker that you buy at your local store, but those are full of controversial ingredients These crackers taste the same and are a much better choice if you are going to eat crackers.
COCONUT SUGAR. Good price. While all sugar is metabolized the same in the body, coconut sugar brings a rich panel of nutrients to the table.
TACO SHELLS. You would be surprised at the laundry list of preservatives and ingredients in a taco shell. With taco night being a staple in our house, quality shells are necessary. 3 ingredients: organic corn flour, sunflower oil, and lime.
SPICE BLENDS and EVERYTHING BUT THE BAGEL SEASONING. Delicious. On everything.
CRYSTALIZED GINGER. Again, ginger is great for digestion. This comes in a bag full of sweet chunks of ginger root. A much better choice than Tums.
SARDINES. Little fish. Nutritional powerhouses, loaded with protein and an excellent source of omega 3s. Perfect to throw on top of a salad with some lemon juice and fresh cracked pepper.
FROZEN CAULIFLOWER GNOCCHI. When I just feel like that pasta fix. Delicious sautéed in coconut oil, topped with Rao’s sauce or the vegan cashew pesto.
TJ’S COCONUT AMINOS. 99% of soybeans in the US are GMO and recognized hormone disruptors in the body. This is the perfect, healthy substitution to soy sauce.
FLOWERS AND PLANTS. Their selection is gorgeous and they tend to last a while. Studies have proven that having fresh flowers and plants in the house improves air quality and mood.

LET’S BRING TRADER JOE’S TO LAKE NORMAN!
Even the name of this growing small business makes you feel instantly better! Brighter Smiles of Davidson is a labor of love for owner Jasmine Egoavil, who has always nurtured an interest in beauty services, and helping clients achieve their best self.
“With my degree in Business Management, I felt I could come up with a more unique approach to teeth whitening that meshes quality, affordability, and ease of accessibility to my clients,” explains Jasmine. “I started Brighter Smiles because our smiles are one of the first things we use to present ourselves to the world, and that smile should leave a lasting impression.”
Brighter Smiles is currently the only mobile whitening company around the Charlotte area, and as another popular feature, Jasmine offers group discounts for bridal parties and ladies’ nights out, and she partners with other professionals to offer facials, spray tans, Botox, and permanent bracelets as add-ons to any party!
When whitening your teeth, it’s important to find someone you can trust and rely on to deliver the best results. Jasmine happily admits she’s a perfectionist—which is a trait that shows up glowingly for her clients.
“I’ve seen people reluctant to smile in social settings or in photos, and I’ve always felt that is such a shame,” says Jasmine. “We wear our smiles every day, and they should be something we are proud to brandish. I love seeing the immediate transformation my clients undergo when they see brighter teeth. They can’t stop smiling all the way to their car! I feel so much joy in helping my clients feel confident with their appearance—and proud to show off their smile!”
Jasmine moved to Davidson, NC, from Palm Beach, FL, to give her daughters a more wholesome lifestyle, and to enjoy North Carolina’s beautiful weather!
“We have loved getting to know our neighbors, and adventuring around the Lake Norman area,” she adds. “You
really can’t beat the beauty of this state!”
Jasmine is also adamant about making the whitening process as easy as possible for her busy clientele.
“Since many of my clients have hectic day-to-day schedules, I offer mobile services, and will travel to set up in their home or office,” she explains. “However, as a mother and businesswoman, I also know the regular environment can be somewhat chaotic, which is why I also offer local clients the opportunity to come to my home office if they prefer a more peaceful setting!”
Jasmine uses only high-quality products made in the United States, FDA approved, and safe for your teeth’s enamel. Sourcing the best and most effective treatments for clients is important to her, as well as researching and staying abreast of the newest industry techniques.
“I’m proud to say I have found the most effective products to get your teeth to the brightest shade they can be, in a little over one hour. It’s important to me that my clients are happy with their results and eager to return for their touch-ups!” says Jasmine.
Her initial goal to bring clients back to their best selves is now a reality.
“The best feedback I’ve received from many of my clients is that I’ve made them feel comfortable with a process they were very uneasy about initially,” says Jasmine. “Many people I see have never had their teeth whitened, and they are afraid of what will happen to their teeth and their level of sensitivity. I pride myself on taking time to explain all aspects of the process, what results they can expect, and any aftercare instructions they need to follow.”

JASMINE EGOAVIL OWNER, BRIGHTER SMILES OF DAVIDSON
People often ask me how I arrived in the clothing and fashion industry, and my answer never wavers: it’s a personal interest. There were essentially no men’s stores within a 45-minute drive from the Lake Norman area, so this was a void I wanted to fill. Hampton’s is now beginning its tenth year in business, and embarking on a new territory: the vibrant village of Main Street in Mooresville. We’re excited for the relocation and look forward to joining the community of patrons and fellow businesses downtown!
The aforementioned personal interest goes a little deeper, though. I was raised to show respect, and the action of respect can be displayed in numerous ways- attire being one of them. I strive daily to make our customers look great, but to feel it also and carry the confidence and joy of dressing better than they must. Taking pride in your appearance is a sign of not only self-respect, but to those in your presence as well. If you go out looking careless and disheveled, others will suspect that you in fact, are, and don’t expect a higher level of service or respect. I once had a guy tell me he was looking for an outfit for a nice dinner he was attending in Charlotte. After asking him where and showing him potential options, he said he was only wanting to wear shorts and a golf polo. I advised him that he would be totally out of place in this particular restaurant, and they may not even let him in, but he was determined to just “get by.” He came back a couple of days later and said he regretted that decision.
The Covid years brought an influx of athleisure and overly-casual style, but that era is over, and it’s time to up your game again. There are plenty of ways to be comfortable and still look sophisticated; you just have to open your mind
and try something new! Leave the performance clothing for the golf course or the lake… With the right fabrics, even the summer heat is easily bearable. Linen shirts, cotton pants, and lightly constructed sportcoats should be your wardrobe staples for the hotter months. A few summer style rules I always try to consider are: long sleeves rolled up always look better than short sleeves (and they aren’t any hotter); with pants, shirts are tucked in, and with shorts, untucked; and for going out in the evenings, pants are always more appropriate than shorts.
Going out for a date night? You know the lady in your life is going to dress the part. Match her effort and be complementary! Don’t be afraid to be the best-dressed guy in the room! One of my favorite restaurants in the country is Maple & Ash in Chicago. Their reservation confirmation reads “ladies, come as your elegant selves. Gentlemen, dress like you give a (four letter word that Ralphie says in A Christmas Story).” This is all just to say that next time you’re going out, consider what your appearance can say and do for you. Dress better than you have to… the right people will notice and appreciate the effort. After all, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Welcome to the final article in the Love Language story series. By know you probably know that the five “languages” are:
One of the biggest challenges in the early years of my marriage was that Spouse and I would butt heads about our social calendar. I was always a “the more the merrier” kind of gal, inviting friends, family, neighbors, and dogs to be a part of every weekend, holiday, or celebration. While he often found himself asking me “Can’t it just be us?” Now obviously a big part of that is the Introvert vs. Extrovert thing but we will save that for another article! 24+ years later, it is so clear to me now that Spouse was simply speaking one of his languages to me: quality time!
As the name implies, this love language means you crave spending “fruitful and attentive time” with your partner and even other loved ones in your family and close friend circle. And just sitting side-by-side staring at your phones doesn’t count! Making time turn into quality time means that it is purposeful and your loved one is actively engaged with you and feels prioritized by you.
“Quality time is giving your undivided attention to your partner,” says Valerie Poppel, PhD, a clinical sexologist and co-founder of The Swann Center, an organization that offers inclusive sexual education and training. “In today’s world, we’re plugged into everything but perhaps our partners.”
Let’s face it; we all want to feel special and loved. Quality time means you appreciate the simplicity of human interaction. You desire feeling seen and understood. Who doesn’t? But the main factor to determining if this is your love language or your partners (or one of them you’re allowed more than one!) is that you find quality time to be the BIGGEST source of validation in your connections. One major clue is that people with this love language usually go out of their way to make it happen.
It came as no surprise that when Spouse and I began to plan the E.A.A., Epic Anniversary Adventure, and I asked him to give me his three priorities for the trip he said in this exact order:
• Relaxation
• Quality time with each other
• Fun
After 25 years of marriage, I am multilingual enough to read the meaning behind each of those and I am thrilled to say that I agree with all three! Can I still learn more about the languages spoken in our home and continue to grow as a wife? Of course I can, and I hope to by listening better and not assuming how my partner wants to spend time with me.
If you would like to learn more about the Five Love Languages and how your marriage might benefit, I suggest starting with the book that started a movement, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts by Dr. Gary Chapman. You can also find a fun online quiz here: www.5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/love-language.
A sincere thank you to my dear friend Keela for asking me to write this series of articles. She doesn’t know it but Keela’s 6th love language is ‘inspiration’ which she gives out in large quantities!

With a passion to promote positive healing, Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center is a fully accredited 501(c)(3) non-profit, serving child victims of sexual assault in Alexander and Iredell counties. Through advocacy, intervention, collaboration, and education, lives are changed!
“We work to facilitate the teamwork essential for intervention and healing for children who have experienced child sexual abuse,” explains Beth McKeithan, Executive Director. “Children come to a facility specifically designed for children. It has the benefits of a house, such as a playroom and a kitchen, yet is equipped with state-of-theart equipment such as audio/video monitoring and medical equipment to ensure only the best professional services are provided.”
All agencies responsible for investigating and providing services can join in a coordinated response at the CAC—on a child’s developmentally appropriate level. This prevents potential re–victimization by requiring children to travel to different locations to be interviewed, and served by different adult ‘strangers’.
“Support offered to the child’s non–offending family members ensures the child will have a supportive family with them through this often traumatic time,” says Beth. “We strive to meet our mission through collaborative working relationships with local police departments, the District Attorney, Department of Social Services, and mental health professionals. In addition to providing direct services such as forensic interviewing, medical examinations, and counseling to abused children, the Center also facilitates everything necessary to meet children’s needs, and to successfully investigate cases and prosecute offenders.”
The Dove House team also speaks to parent groups to educate them on the most effective way to monitor their child’s interactions
online, working closely with FBI agents to keep up with trends.
“Online Safety is an important part of an educational setting’s responsibility to safeguard children,” adds Beth. “Always monitor your child’s time online, particularly younger children. Keep the computer in a central spot in the home where it’s easy to keep an eye on what your child is viewing online. For mobile devices, you can set them to forget Wi-Fi passcodes so your children cannot go online without you knowing.”
Dove House works with first and fifth graders in public schools and several charter and private schools in the area, teaching them to have a plan if someone tries to do something inappropriate. One out of four girls, and one out of six boys will be sexually abused by the time they turn 18.
“Many children didn’t know what was happening to them was wrong until our program came in,” says Beth. “They thought it was normal. We are also building our medical program through community partnerships and funding, if anyone is interested in helping with this program, they can reach out to me. It takes special people to do this work, but it’s so very important. Helping the child understand their body is okay after something like this happens is also a huge part of the medical appointment, along with collecting any physical evidence that may exist.”
Seeing kids traumatized after a sexual assault is hard, says Beth, but it’s also gratifying to empower them again, on the road to healing!
“They are not broken, something really awful happened to them that shouldn’t have. We have a team of people who run to the darkest corners of the earth to fight for the children we serve, and we are grateful to every board member, community member, staff person, and volunteer that supports Dove House.”
Because of the highly confidential and sensitive nature of the work done at Dove House, volunteers don’t work directly with clients. But many volunteers help with non-clinical projects and the group’s fundraising events. Volunteer needs may include yard or landscape “spruceup” day, facility maintenance, and planning and set-up for special events. Dove House just had its main fundraising event in April, but next year’s event—An Evening for Dove House—will be held April 20, 2024, along with the Children’s Voice Luncheon held in the fall. Community funding and support is imperative to the organization’s work!
Dove House is located at 2407 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC, 704-883-9814. Visit them online at Dovehousecac.org, or if you are interested in having someone speak to your parent or school group, reach out to beth@dovehouse.us.
Epic Chophouse of Mooresville was one of 16 restaurants supporting An Evening for Dove House on April 15th. If you’re interested in being a corporate sponsor or participating in Restaurant Row for the 2024 event, please contact Beth at beth@dovehouse.us.
WITH NO SHORTAGE OF PICTURESQUE VIEWS AND AMAZING SUNSETS, WONDERFUL DINING OPPORTUNITIES, AND A MULTITUDE OF WATER SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES, LAKE NORMAN OFFERS A LIFESTYLE THAT’S CLOSE TO PERFECTION.
If you’re dreaming of lake views and a laid-back routine, get to know the Lake Norman RV Resort and Tiny Homes of Lake Norman—where you may find your perfect home match as well!
Originally purchased in 2006 as three tracts of land, what is now the Lake Norman RV Resort offers current accommodations and RV sites that are available for rent on a daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonal basis. Since 2016, owner Jim Davidson has keenly kept tabs on the popular—and growing—trend of Tiny Homes, adding a few units at a time to his RV resort each year since then. Today, there are a total of 46 Tiny Homes within the RV resort, with 29 home owners who use these popular residences as a mix of primary and secondary homes. Jim’s ultimate vision is to cater to private owners, who would purchase the 399-square-foot Tiny Home and rent their lot, based on location and view.
“In 2020 we made the exciting decision to sell the currently available Tiny Homes to clients for their personal use – as either a primary or secondary home,” says Jim. “I’m now offering investors the opportunity to purchase, with the RV resort managing all rentals to maintain security and rental price consistency.”
Once the resort is at 90% Tiny Homes, you’ll see an official name change to Tiny Homes of Lake Norman!
The long-term vision is a community of 70 Tiny Homes, all with incredible locations and scenery, and of course, the endless added benefits of Lake Norman living. Been dreaming of a home on Lake Norman? This is your very affordable option: $124,900 for a one-bedroom lake view, and $179,900 for a one-bedroom home on the lakefront!
These Tiny Home cabins sleep up to six guests and include a full bathroom and kitchen with full-sized appliances. Guests are always enamored with the lake’s pristine beauty and the local wildlife, and nearby activities are endless: Shopping at Birkdale Village or Davidson’s Farmer’s Market, Discovery Place Kids or the Carolina Raptor Center for family adventures, the enormously popular craft beer and wine scene, and favorite attractions close by that include the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bank of America Stadium (home of the Carolina Panthers!), and the Spectrum Center (home of the Charlotte Hornets!)
Privately owned, the Lake Norman RV resort is a gated community that includes a large 3,500-foot deck and pavilion overlooking the lake and is open 24/7. Guests can relax in the mini-movie theater, enjoy the game room and exercise room with a beautiful lake view, and an office suite that is open from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. Water enthusiasts will appreciate access to paddle boards, pontoon rentals, kayaks, paddle boats, and fishing – all free to resort guests. Savor time by the fire pit on chillier days, enjoy the barbecue grills, a Tiki Hut, 350-foot boardwalk, pet park, boat ramp and boat slips for guests, a bathhouse with private shower suites and laundry open 24/7, and you’re likely already wondering why you aren’t part of this amazing community. This is your chance to immerse yourselves in the Lake
Norman lifestyle, while enjoying all the advantages of Tiny Home ownership!
For more information on the Lake Norman RV Resort and Tiny Homes of Lake Norman and for up-to-date availability, reach their office at 704-489-6033. The resort is located at 6738 E. NC 150 Hwy, in Sherrills Ford, NC. See all the resort’s amenities and find current rental information and more details on purchasing a Tiny Home of your own at lakenormanmotorcoachresort.com.

JUST TO ENTICE YOU A BIT MORE, THERE ARE SOME HARD-TO-BEAT REASONS TO PURCHASE A TINY HOME—ESPECIALLY IN THIS AMAZING LAKE SETTING WE LOVE
Looking to take a beach trip this summer, but not sure where to start? Whether you’re looking for prime swimming conditions, a bustling culinary scene, or a chance to see marine life, the United States is full of beaches on both coasts that offer something for everyone.
Vacationing with small children? Skip the California coast. Atlantic waters are warmer with weaker shore breaks, making the Atlantic a safer ocean for swimming. Beaches along the southern east coast are lined with family-oriented resorts with swimming pools and other activities that children will enjoy. Resorts in summertime hotspots such as Myrtle Beach make vacation life so convenient that you rarely need to leave the property. If you don’t mind the crowds, stick to a simple South Carolina beach trip, or even Savannah, Georgia’s nearby Tybee Island. Warmer and calmer waters also carry the risk of running into jellyfish or other marine stingers, but most types of jellyfish encountered by swimmers in the area are relatively harmless with the exception of painful stings and rare allergic reactions. Pay attention to the various flags flying at lifeguard stands indicating whether dangerous marine life is present to know when to keep your children out of the ocean for the day.
Tourists and locals flock to San Diego’s La Jolla neighborhood to see swarms of sea lions lining the beach year-round, in addition to the chance to see tiger sharks swimming in shallow waters in the late summer months. In fact, seals and sea lions are so important to La Jolla’s culture and marine biology that La Jolla Cove became protected under the Marine Life Protection Act in 1929, with an expansion in 2012, to preserve its beauty. Although vastly different from the miles of uninterrupted sand and sea along the South Carolina coast, Southern California’s secluded coves and tide pools offer the ideal experience for beachgoers hoping to focus on the beauty of nature. In addition to seals, sea lions, and rocky coastlines, the greater San Diego area offers an excellent culinary experience for travelers, especially those in search of fresh fish tacos or carne asada fries.
Keep in mind that although Southern California has a reputation for being sunny with perfect weather, the “May gray” or “June gloom” is common in late spring and early summer, which is a low-lying, thick marine layer of fog creating an overcast sky and cooler temperatures, especially in the mornings. These conditions can sometimes last for days on end, confusing tourists expecting the sun. During the later summer months, the marine layer typically burns off quicker once temperatures rise, making August and September ideal months to experience the best of Southern California’s beach-worthy weather.
It’s no secret that beaches along the Northern California and Oregon coasts are not the warmest, most swimmable, or easiest to access. Nonetheless, these chilly beaches with strong waves are close in proximity to some of the country’s best hiking trails and campgrounds. California’s Big Sur is a must-see along the Pacific Coast Highway, sitting just far away enough from the heart of cities such as Monterey and Los Angeles to maintain its seemingly untouched beauty. Big Sur’s popular Pfeiffer Beach is known for its unique purple sand, in addition to the picturesque Keyhole Arch. Depending on weather conditions, accessing the mountainous and rugged Big Sur can be challenging if flooding or other natural disasters impact road conditions. Surrounded by redwood trees, camping and hiking in the Big Sur area is a common activity among visitors, as strong waves and chilly temperatures can deter beachgoers from sunbathing and swimming. Camping newcomers seeking a spot near Big Sur can try their hand at a more glamorous camping experience referred to as “glamping” at Hyatt’s beautiful Alila Ventana Big Sur. Although the Alila Ventana resort itself is pricier than most travelers want to pay, glamping tents packed with creature comforts such as electricity and hot water, as well as clean restrooms and shower houses, are a great way to connect with nature without truly “roughing it,” although more rustic camping options are also available.
Between them, owners Courtney Brownewell and Susan Williams have over 20 years experience in retail, and both are well-versed in creating inviting spaces. The two entrepreneurs—who both started showing at craft shows, but in different mediums—met at a local multi-vendor market, where each had a booth.
“We both had a desire to grow in the retail field, and starting our own business was the next step,” says Courtney and Susan. “We were not looking specifically in Mooresville, but a friend mentioned the space at Merino Mill, and we fell in love with its tall ceilings, amazing light, exposed brick walls, and original wood floors!”
Customers also love hearing about the mill’s history, as well as telling Courtney and Susan about their family members who worked there through the years. Opening in March of 2021 was still slightly scary—postpandemic—but a year after opening, Nest & Bower was awarded the Lake Norman “Normy” award for Best Furniture Store! But this adorable space is filled with so much more, including the most unique home accents, dinnerware, bar accessories, gourmet foods, garden decor, and jewelry.
Nest & Bower carries both popular and one-of-a-kind brands—a “collected” look with some new merchandise, mixed with a bit of vintage, all with its own character and style.
“We spend lots of time curating and staging the store, and creating a beautiful, warm, and inviting space for our customers,” says Susan. “It’s a pleasure to help people select the perfect accessory for their home, and we love getting to know them and learning about their lives and interests.”
“We can honestly say the most rewarding part of our business is getting to
know our customers,” agrees Courtney. “Every time someone walks through our doors, we make it our mission to make them feel comfortable exploring our unique collection of gifts and home decor.”
The ladies at Nest & Bower also love assisting customers find perfect gifts for friends and family—including new babies and even the man in your life!— creating a true shopping experience where it’s not just about the purchase. You’ll need several trips around the store to grasp the possibilities on any given shopping day. Courtney and Susan are passionate about the esthetics of the showroom floor—from product selection to the music playlist!
“Many customers come in and say our store is their happy place!” says Courtney. With currently one other employee, the savvy owners are planning to expand a little more this coming year.
“Even as we grow, one of us is almost always at the store because we feel it’s important to stay connected to our customers—and the daily aspects of running the business,” says Susan.
Fun—and creative!—monthly painting classes have also become popular events at Nest & Bower. Participants bring food, drinks, and enjoy a night out with friends, and the chance to create an art piece that’s easy enough for beginners.
With no shortage of beautiful things and a relaxing vibe, visit Nest & Bower Home and Gifts for your spring and summer inspiration! The store is located at 500 S. If you read our “Top Five Reasons Why Consigning Makes Sense” in the April issue, you know working with an established consignment store is always the best idea!
Expert Heather Kline reminded us of some key points: Consigning takes the hassle out of selling for you (reducing the risk of you selling to the wrong buyers and interacting with strangers), it offers the enormous benefits of shopping local, and it provides an eco-friendly alternative to sending otherwise good pieces to the local landfill!
Heather and her husband, Andrew, bought Consign On A Dime & Showplace 28 in 2020, and love their unique niche of selling quality furniture and decor at what they describe as “gently used” prices.
Heather grew up in Western Lincoln County in Vale, and earned her bachelor’s degree in Business and Marketing Education from Appalachian State University. When Andrew completed his Masters degree, the two moved to Cornelius after graduation.
“We moved here in 2005, and I began my teaching career at Lake Norman High School in Mooresville,” says Heather. “After teaching, we began a real estate team and enjoyed working together selling residential real estate in the Lake Norman and Charlotte areas.”
When the couple’s first son was born, Andrew went to work for Lowes Corporate Headquarters, and Heather began teaching Preschool at Community in Christ Lutheran Church. But as their children grew, she realized how much she missed being in a business and marketing setting.
“When we purchased the consignment stores I immediately fell in love with the mixture of business, marketing, and the small town local shopping experience,” shares Heather.
One element tends to set both stores apart from other consignment businesses.
by MARTIE EMORY“Our team’s attention to detail is definitely one of our keys to success,” says Heather “We open our store to many different designs and styles, while also focusing on high-quality, luxury brands, and extremely unique finds. They are constantly re-designing our displays to showcase the current inventory.” That amazing team includes 14 employees that rotate between the two stores—ranging in age from 15-years-old to 80-years-young!
For Heather, meeting customers is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. She, Andrew, and their team work hard to create a warm, welcoming environment, and go out of their way to assist customers who are searching for specific items.
“Many days we engage with customers who are going through major life transitions—downsizing, a growing family, or a relocation,” she says. “When customers allow us to guide them through the buying process, our team can truly get to know them and their personal style.”
Everyone involved with Consign On A Dime & Showplace
28 strives to keep the daily work flow in balance. That means maintaining an open stream of constant communication throughout the showrooms and behind the scenes, as well as keeping the movement of inventory up-to-date. The team works non-stop to redesign displays so inventory consistently sells at a rate conducive to maintaining a steady turnover of new products. Without the staff’s knowledge, input, and hard work, Heather and Andrew know their successes and expansions wouldn’t be possible! Plus, there is bountiful support within the Lake Norman small business community.
“We love Lake Norman, and living in Cornelius makes life very easy and convenient for our family!” says Heather. “We can find almost anything we are searching for within a 10-mile range!”
She and Andrew love being convenient to Charlotte and Charlotte Douglas Airport, giving their family the experience of a city vibe, as well as providing for easy air travel.
“Living here also means that within any day, we can find ourselves at the beach or in the mountains. Staying on-the-go and managing many projects sometimes means that ‘vacation’ can become a last-minute decision!” says Heather.
With an inventory that is ever changing, Consign On A Dime is always looking for clean, gently used, quality furniture and home accessories. All items must be pre-approved for consignment, and you can email pictures to info@consignonadime. com. Someone will reply to you within 48-72 hours. Consign On A Dime & Showplace 28 have a proven track record of quick turnover because of their high-quality inventory.
The perfect pieces for your own home—whether it’s new or well-established—just might be waiting at Consign On A Dime, located at 19207 W. Catawba Avenue, Suite A, Cornelius, NC, 704-892-8492, and online at www. Consignonadime.com. Showplace 28 is located at 20924 Torrence Chapel Road, Cornelius, NC, 704-892-4447, and online at www. Showplace28.com. Follow them on Instagram @coadandsp28. Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
In early 2022, Heather and Andrew also acquired Champions Sports Performance in Cornelius. Champions is a Parisi Speed School which focuses on teaching speed, strength, and agility to children of all abilities. They recently opened a second location in Matthews, NC, and their team of trainers works daily with children ages four to college-age to fine-tune and develop their skills for speed and agility.
“Andrew and I both are active Board Members for Lake Norman Little League, and have witnessed first-hand how Champions allowed our 13-year-old to grow and develop a strong core appropriate for his growth rate,” Heather adds. “We feel his training has been the key element that keeps him injury-free, while playing and competing in travel sports at such a young age.”
On May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was created by the UN. What do you think about when someone mentions Israel? People usually think of the ongoing war between the Israelis and the Palestinians. A few years ago, Marianne and I got the opportunity to tour Israel. Let me share some of the highlights that I walked away with.
We flew into Tel Aviv and took a bus to Jerusalem to get to our hotel. But first, we had to pass through security to be allowed into the country. They didn’t use a lot of scanning devices, but rather personal interviews. The security staff would talk to you, ask questions and determine if you were a threat.
Bright and early the next morning we took a tour on the Sea of Galilee where the crew demonstrated how fishing was done in Jesus’ time. After tossing the net in, they pulled it up empty. Marianne suggested they try the other side as Jesus had done with the disciples.
Later in the day, we got to see where Jesus gave His Sermon on the Mount. It was a perfect location to talk to thousands of people without electronic speakers. When we went ashore, we got to see the octagon church built in 1938 to honor the Sermon on the Mount. We learned that they would build a church over sacred spots so they would always be remembered.
Three things were very special for me on this trip. One was the Mount of Olives. Jesus walked there and prayed there, and the fact that it was among olive trees means that some of them could have been there at the same time as Jesus. Wow, that was truly special!
Another thing that was special and a Holy place was the Western Wall, known as the Wailing Wall in the West. It was built about 19 BC, about 60
feet high, and part of the Temple Mount. This is the holiest site of the Jewish faith. In the sixteenth century, when Jewish pilgrimage to the Temple Mount was prohibited, the Western Wall would serve as a place of prayer for the Jewish people; a symbol of longing for the Temple. The Wall is built from enormous, quarried stones, whose mass ranges between two to five tons.
We prayed for our Sunday School class there. We had written their names on a piece of paper and inserted it into a crack in the wall. It was a very powerful experience. There were separate areas for the men and the women, and you had to have your head covered as you approached the wall. Paper yarmulkes were available to use. The Temple Mount is there as well. All visitors, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim people are welcome when it is open. “Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammad ascended to the Divine Presence on the back of a winged horse.”
We also traveled to Nazareth where we found a town recreated to the time of Jesus. They had all the things that Jesus would have, while He lived among them. Carpentry shops with tools of the time, a rock grinding wheel, wine and olive press, sheep, and a sheep pen. They explained how they would carry a small sheep around the shepherd’s neck for weeks so the sheep would learn the sound of the shepherd’s voice.
I would be greatly remiss if I didn’t share information about the Dead Sea scrolls. They were discovered in caves in clay jars around Qumran. This is a very dry area near the fortress of Masada. There were over 200 manuscripts found, with some of them dated from 250 BC to AD 68. We actually got to see these scrolls in a separate part of the museum in Jerusalem. We get to read many of them when we read the Bible. The experts have studied them and have found
that the words we read today are almost exactly what was written 2,000 years ago. No wonder the Bible continues to be the best selling book year after year.
Let us move on to Masada, an almost impenetrable fortress on top of a mountain. We took a cable car to get there. Masada gained fame as a point of refuge at the end of the Jewish, Roman war, 73 AD. It was built by Herod the Great, King of Judaea.
The Jewish people who survived the war escaped and sought refuge there. The Romans wanted to finish the job, so they attacked Masada. Their plan was to build a ramp up the mountain and bring up a wall breaker. A huge undertaking with a lot of hardship. The Jewish people had the advantage of shooting down on the Romans. Eventually, the Romans put Jewish slaves on the front line. The Jews would not shoot at their people, so the ramp proceeded. When the Romans breached the wall, they were shocked. Everyone was dead. They all had committed suicide except one, who was left alive to tell the story of Masada.
There is so much more to the story of Israel, but we will have to save it for another time.
May God’s peace be with you.
Originally from Texas, savvy entrepreneurs Amanda and Joseph Coyle have responded to a vital need in the Charlotte area, and one that hit very close to home.
Having owned the local North Charlotte Twinkle Toes Nanny Agency for the last 18 months, the two are passionate about quality, hassle-free childcare, and are making that a reality for parents in North Charlotte and the surrounding areas, including Huntersville, Davidson, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, Cornelius, Mooresville, Denver, and Concord.
“We are parents first,” says Amanda. “Joseph and I understand how challenging it can be to find someone you trust to watch and care for your most prized possession! Being able to relieve that pressure and provide a service families can trust and depend on is our top priority.”
Their heartfelt enthusiasm for the business began with their own search for a nanny.
“When COVID hit, we suddenly became parents working full-time with an eight-yearold student at home,” Amanda explains. “We tried recruiting a nanny on our own through various apps, social media, and sites, such as Care.com. We quickly realized it was difficult, stressful and time-consuming.”
While Joseph handles the day-to-day operations of Twinkle Toes, Amanda manages marketing and events. They also have a full-time Assistant Branch Manager, Alyvia. The ultimate busy mom who knows the scenario well, Amanda is also a Sr. Project Manager for the Lowe’s corporate office, mom to their now 11-year-old daughter (and Den Leader of her Cub Scout pack!), and she and Joseph (who totally loves being a girl dad!) also “parent” three rescue dogs!
Amanda and Joseph are passionate about both sides of the business—and also love being a support system for the nannies they hire. Potential nanny candidates go through an interview plus reference checks and an extensive background and driving record check.
“We require all nannies to be CPR certified, and we fully vet all candidates to relieve the families of that task,” says Amanda. “After we screen nannies and are ready to place them with a family, we share profiles of families with nannies. We want to ensure the schedule and job requirements work for both parties. Once the nanny selects families he/she is interested in, we share their profile with the families, who make the decision on which nannies they want to select for interviews.”
Twinkle Toes Nanny Agency handles childcare for all schedules, providing part-time, full-time, long-term, temporary, just for date nights, overnights, and even childcare for special occasions, such as holiday parties or weddings, where they prefer to keep a 4:1 ratio.
“Many of our clients do not have the typical 8:00-5:00 career,” Amanda adds. “For example, we have medical professionals who work three twelves and/or overnight shifts.”
With a typical lead time of four to six weeks to recruit the “perfect” nanny, the agency does their best to also fill urgent needs as well, sometimes offering a temporary placement while recruiting a longer-term nanny.
WHAT SETS TWINKLE TOES NANNY AGENCY APART:
• No upfront placement fees, application, or registration fees
• Clients only pay the hourly rate for the services rendered
• Extensive background checks including criminal, civil, driving record, Social Security check for other aliases
• All nannies are CPR certified
• Can provide an on-call nanny if your primary nanny is unavailable
“We understand that every family has different needs, and Twinkle
Toes is committed to providing the best service possible for our clients!” says Amanda.
You can reach Twinkle Toes by email— amanda@twinkletoesnanny.com or joseph@twinkletoesnanny.com—or call them directly at 704.821.4492 to learn more, and begin the process of hiring your next amazing nanny today! Visit them online at twinkletoesnanny. com/charlotte and on Instagram @ twinkletoesnanny_northclt
Your child deserves the best care and you deserve piece of mind. As North Charlotte’s only pediatrician recommended nanny agency all of our nannies are screened far beyond industry standards, and you only pay for the time you use the service!
With the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop, and less than an hour’s drive from the Lake Norman area, the exquisite Dynamis Estate Wines in Jonesville, NC, is truly a loving, hands-on experience.
From harvest to bottling, to sharing every distinctive Dynamis wine with discerning guests, the entire process is 100% estate-grown, hand-picked, and handcrafted! All the Bordeaux-inspired wines produced here are grown, aged, and bottled right on the estate. LKN Magazine caught up with Vineyard & Orchard Manager, Joseph Geller, for a little insight into what the Spring season means to these savvy wine-makers.
LKN: After being protected all winter, bud break is such a crucial time at the vineyard. When does that typically start, and when does flowering begin?
JOSEPH: Mid-April is when we typically start seeing bud break in the vineyard, and mid-May is when the grape flowers bloom. Grapes have a later start, compared to our peaches and apples. Once the grapevines bloom, that determines both the size of the crop and the size of the berries.
LKN: What are ideal Spring temperatures for the crops? How can you protect them from a late frost?
JOSEPH: Agriculture needs steady, regular weather patterns to be successful, and when we have unusual temperature swings during winter and early spring, this can result in crop damage. For the vineyard, we really need a cold February and March to keep the vines dormant until mid-April. If we have a mild winter, the vines will wake up early and have a longer exposure period to possible frost events. The best way to avoid frost is good site selection with relative elevation gain— to put your vines above the frost line. Utilizing large fans or wind machines in the vineyard can help circulate air to keep warmer air down towards the ground.
LKN: How do you adapt to such significant seasonal changes?
JOSEPH: I’ve learned that every season brings its own challenges, and it’s always different from the year before. We monitor the weather and each variety’s progress carefully, and adjust our canopy management and harvest strategies accordingly, to ensure we can achieve our premium fruit quality goals.
LKN: What inspires you most about your work at Dynamis?
JOSEPH: We get to work at one of the most beautiful properties in North Carolina—doing what we love! The vines are very happy up here on the mountain, and so are the hard-working people who take care of them! We love continuing the farming history.
LKN: Are there any new wine introductions for spring to share with our readers? Any special events happening in May or June?
JOSEPH: We will be releasing our first Rosé in late spring—which will be made from our Estate Malbec, offering a Provence-style Rosé. Dynamis Rosé will be dry, with minerality, and delicately fruity. Director of Hospitality, Jennie Hess, adds that Dynamis will be launching our inaugural Rosé on Saturday, May 20, with Rosé Day—including a charcuterie truck, live music, and, of course, tastings!
LKN: What do you feel sets Dynamis Estate Wines apart from other vineyards in North Carolina? What defines a guest’s Dynamis experience?
JOSEPH: Our site’s elevation and geology create the perfect environment to grow premium wine grapes. At 1,640 feet, our vineyards get a steady breeze, which grapes like. Our rocky soil—and the way it drains—make it ideal for producing high-quality fruit. We hope people recognize the quality of wine we are striving to produce, and the incredible potential we have here in North Carolina. Most people leave our vineyard feeling like they just visited a luxury tasting room on the west coast—such as Napa or Sonoma!
Plan your Spring trip to Dynamis Estate Wines now! The vineyard is located at 1004 Highland Road, Jonesville, NC, 336-468-6702. This month’s food feature, The Foundry, is located within the Twin Mills Club in Denver. Although the club and its many amenities are for members only, don’t worry the restaurant is open to the public! Once you drive through their impeccably landscaped community and reach the clubhouse, you will find their sophisticated, yet welcoming restaurant. You will have the option to sit inside the expansive dining area or outside if the weather permits. The inside features an open kitchen which allows you to watch the staff work their magic through a wall of windows. Outside comprises a large patio space with umbrellaed tables and a window that converts the bar to service outdoors as well as indoors. Everything about the atmosphere here screams significance, and the food is equally impressive.
We started out by ordering two favorite cocktails: the Denver Sunset and Foundry Old Fashioned. The Denver Sunset is a tropical mix including coconut Carolina rum, pineapple and orange juice with a nutmeg rim and orange garnish. This drink is perfect for the warming weather that’s approaching or if you want to feel like you are on vacation. If you are looking for a drink with a head turning presentation, their old fashioned easily checks that box. Made with Elijah Craig bourbon, this cocktail is smoked table-side with cherry wood. Their drink menu also features plenty of wine by the glass or bottle and beers bottled or on tap.
Now, onto the food! Their appetizer section has a variety of options great for sharing. Some fan favorites include sauteed mussels, wood-grilled ribs, the empress cauliflower, and crispy Brussel sprouts. We decided to go with the ribs and Brussel sprouts. The wood-grilled ribs had benne seeds, sorghum, bacon
by CHELSEA KOWALSKI Chile Peruvian Chicken & House-Smoked Pastrami Rueben Sandwichbarbeque and Mayfair dressing. The ribs were cut into eight large pieces, perfect for the whole table. The creamy dressing paired excellent with the light smoke and barbeque sauce of the ribs. We loved the Brussel sprouts and can easily see why they are a popular starter. The balsamic reduction added a sweet touch to this veggie appetizer sprinkled with grated parmesan cheese. Next time we stop in, the sauteed mussels are already on our must try list. We were told these are served in a heaping portion that many order as their meal.
For the main event, we choose from each of their entrée sections: handhelds, pizza, and chef’s table. Within the handheld section we opted for the housesmoked pastrami Reuben sandwich. Served on golden grains bakery bread, the corn beef is cooked overnight then smoked quickly, rubbed in coffee glaze and pastrami seasoning. Each handheld also comes with either crispy fries, house slaw, or garlic parmesan fries as a side. We went with the parm fries which were delicious! For pizza we chose the margherita with overnight tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarella cheese. The overnight tomatoes are tossed in spices and laid out to oven dry overnight. All pizzas are made in-house from small batch dough daily and can also be substituted for gluten free crust. From the chef’s table section, we had one of the newest items available to the menu which was the green Chile Peruvian chicken. This dish is a play on dirty rice with a fusion Southern twist. The chicken is locally sourced from Joyce Farms, served with crispy rice, black eyed peas and hatch Chile sauce. This meal was just as delicious as it looked! The chicken was tasty and plentiful, while the crispy rice added a nice crunch for texture. Some other popular entrées we did not try were the Foundry salad, rocket bird sandwich, steak 310 and wood-grilled salmon.
We are so thankful that we remembered to save room for dessert, because it was a highlight of our dinner. The famous butter cake is a signature item,
which once again was presented beautifully. The warm brown sugar crusted cake was topped with vanilla ice cream and surrounded by berries, flowers and whiskey sauce. Sharing this melt-in-your-mouth sweet treat was a flawless way to end our meal.
At The Foundry you can tell a lot of love, time and detail goes into every dish. One of our favorite things about this spot is how they use products from various local farms and bakeries that are highlighted in blue on the easy-toread menu. Chef Brett Faldstein is doing a wonderful job turning healthy and fresh local ingredients into scrumptious meals with a Southern flare. Other honorable mentions about this restaurant are their weekly specials, including a lunch combo, Sunday brunch, wine flights and more! This space also hosts events like holiday buffets and can be booked for showers and weddings.
This hidden gem is definitely worth checking out for your next dinner outing. You can find it located at 310 Exploration Blvd. in Denver, NC. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Sunday’s they offer a brunch menu from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by dinner from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. With its diverse menu and skillfully prepared dishes, The Foundry is a top-notch culinary destination in the area. Whether you’re a vegetarian, seafood lover or meat aficionado, there’s something here for everyone. The ambiance is stylish and inviting, the staff is friendly and attentive, and everything we tasted was fantastic! Check out the menu at lakenorman. bluestarmenus.com/the-foundry/ and be sure to make a reservation by calling their team at 704-585-8786 before visiting. Reservations are also available through OpenTable at www.opentable.com/r/the-foundry-attrilogy-norman-lake-denver .
If you’ve arrived at the decision to school your children at home, or even if you’re just hungry for a little more detail about the “getting started” process, here are five steps to help you get a smooth start.*
Find families who are currently teaching their children at home. It’s always great to have someone along with you on the journey. If you don’t know anyone personally, there are groups and pages on Facebook that can aid in an introduction. I’d recommend finding an upcoming event, playdate or other get-together where you can connect with other parents face-to-face.
SOME SUGGESTIONS TO TRY SEARCHING FOR HELP INCLUDE:
North Carolina Homeschool Help
Charlotte Area Homeschool Connection
North Carolinians for Home Education
Learn about NC state laws and recommendations for schooling at home and file a notice of intent to register your school with the state - You can find a link with detailed information on this process at: ncadmin.nc.gov/public/home-school-information.
SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
• If your child(ren) is already enrolled at a school, do not attempt to withdraw them until after you have filed your notice of intent with the state. You will likely need to provide a copy of your home school registration to the school registrar to officially withdraw them.
• Think carefully and with strong consideration when choosing the name of your school. You will not be able to change it once you register it. This will be the name on your child’s transcript and future diploma which is what they will ultimately use on a resume in the future.
• There are certain other restrictions the state lists on their site when it comes to naming your school that you must adhere to. For example, you cannot name your school after copyrighted curriculum names.
In addition to bookmarking the state’s site mentioned earlier, here are two other key sites to visit and then re-visit for future reference:
HSLDA.ORG: Homeschool Legal Defense Association. A nonprofit homeschool advocacy organization.
NCHE.COM: North Carolinians for Home Education. Here you can check out tons of great resources and sign up for their weekly email to get notices on events such as field trips, graduations, scholarships, etc. They also offer great sessions for those beginning the journey to schooling at home.
Teaching at home does not necessarily mean that you need to replicate exactly what your child would be doing in a classroom at school minute by minute. A popular recommended book to look into is 102 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum by Cathy Duffy. It provides an overview of different styles of homeschooling and helps you to identify what type of learner your child may be. This can help guide you to an effective method of learning. Once you do this, it helps to connect you to widely available curriculums that match those learning styles. Remember though, if something you are using isn’t working for your family, it’s ok to re-evaluate and move on to something that works better.
Remember, this is another time where you can be flexible. You don’t have to designate a special room where you’ve spent a fortune to make it look like a classroom. Learning can happen practically anywhere. You might have days when going to the library works better, or you take a field trip to a planetarium or museum. You might find that the couch is a cozier reading spot vs. a desk (I mean, isn’t it?). Most families I know use the kitchen table, kids’ desks in their rooms, their parent’s desks in their home offices, etc. Probably the same places most kids do their homework.
Starting out with a schedule is always a good idea. Your family might like to get chores done in the morning, and then hit the books afterwards. For others, they like to get their studies done straight away and leave the rest of the day open for activities. The key here, again, is not to feel stuck if something isn’t working and things need to shift after life throws you a curveball. (We know life is FULL of them) After all, isn’t thoughtful pivoting after those curveballs of life one of the critical lessons you want your children to learn anyway?
To learn how you might qualify for free admission to an upcoming North Carolina Homeschool Conference in Winston-Salem in May and how you can register for a free “getting started” seminar in Mooresville this June, check out the on line version of this article by visiting lkn-magazine.com. Spring is here! What better time to get in the mood for longer days and the arrival of early spring bloomers than by lining up a few movies that make us feel spring-ish? And by spring-ish we mean movies that take place in spring, those that have lots of beautiful flowers or nature vibes and/or movies about rebirth. In other words, movies that lift us up out of the dreary doldrums of winter with the promise of flowers, sunshine, and certainly some baseball!
Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is inspired by a persistent voice he can’t seem to ignore to pursue a dream he can hardly believe. With his supportive wife by his side, Ray begins to turn his ordinary cornfield into a place where dreams can come true. This is a movie about the heroes of baseball, but, as Ray learns, along with the audience, this field of dreams is about so much more.
EMMA (1996 and 2020)
Emma is a period comedy based on the 1815 novel of the same name by Jane Austen. Emma (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a young socialite in Regency era England who entertains herself by playing matchmaker. Austen’s novels often capture the spirit of spring: with light, love and beautiful English gardens and Emma is no exception. Gwyneth Paltrow is a delight in the 1996 original, but you should also check out the new version released in 2020, with The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy playing the title role.
Springtime is about rebirth, so Eat, Pray, Love feels like a great choice for this list. Based on the 2006 memoir of the same name, it follows a woman, Elizabeth (Julia Roberts) who has set out on a worldwide journey of self-discovery after a long period of unhappiness and a difficult divorce. What she finds along the way is sometimes tragic, often breathtaking and ultimately exactly what we wish for her.
Who can forget the memorable shot of Maria (Julie Andrews) playing a nun-to-be who becomes governess to a naval officer’s seven mischievous children? The movie has engaging music, beautiful landscapes, an incredible love story, and good conquering evil atop the breathtaking Alps. The Sound of Music, a five-time Oscar-winning gem, is one of our favorite springtime things.
When was the last time you played hooky? When it comes to taking a sick day, no one does it better (or worse) than Chicago high schooler Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) and his friends in this iconic John Hughes film.
More baseball! This movie based on the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League has a legendary cast including Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Madonna, and is sure to make you feel warm inside as well as thoroughly amused by the antics of the headstrong players and their harried coach who famously coined the phrase “There’s no crying in baseball”.
THE SECRET GARDEN (1993)
Possibly the most famous adaptation of the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this film centers on a young recently orphaned girl who is sent to England to live with her sickly cousin after living in India all her life. Together, they discover a rambling, neglected garden and set upon bringing it back to life. In the end, the garden serves as a new beginning in more ways than one.
FEVER PITCH (2005)
And at last, another movie about baseball! If you’re an MLB fan, this one is a real winner! Fever Pitch tells the story of Ben (Jimmy Fallon), a young teacher, who meets pretty workaholic Lindsey (Drew Barrymore). The two don’t have much in common, but opposites attract, and they fall in love. Things take an odd turn when baseball season begins, and Lindsey realizes Ben is not just an average Red Sox fan. Fun fact: The directors, screenwriters and cast had to abruptly change course as the ending was re-written when it became clear the Red Sox might actually win the world series for the first time since 1918.
If you’re a meat lover, you’ve probably heard of Picanha, a popular cut of beef in Brazil (and Brazilian steakhouses here in the states) that is known for its flavor and tenderness. It is also known as a top sirloin cap or a rump cap. This has become a favorite for me and many other home cooks and grill enthusiasts. I love reverse searing this cut—just like I like doing for almost every larger cut of steak. There are a few different ways you may see these sold at the butcher, either as a whole (roast) or sliced into individual steaks. I typically get the whole roast from my butcher, cook it and slice it into small slices once it’s done. But you can slice the whole roast into steaks before cooking, requiring less cooking time. The traditional way you’ll see these served is sliced into steaks on large skewers (that look like swords almost) cooked over an open fire and sliced straight off of the skewers onto your plate.
First and foremost, I like to let the Picanha come to room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking. This is a crucial step in ensuring that the meat cooks evenly. Then, I like to score the fat cap (cross hatch) so the final sear can really render that fat nicely. Next, I rub down the Picanha with olive oil and season it heavily with Hatteras Saltworks Black Pepper sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper. This adds flavor and helps the crust develop when the meat is seared. For this cut, you don’t need anything more than salt and pepper.
Next, I insert a Meater+ temperature probe (in the middle of the thickest part) to monitor the internal temperature of the meat. Then I put it in my pellet smoker, running at 225 degrees for about an hour (you could cook it in the oven for this first part too, or any kind of grill that will run at low heat like this)—or until the temperature probe alerts me that it has reached 115 internal. This slow and low cooking method allows the meat to cook evenly and retain its moisture, before we finish it off with a blazing hot sear.
After the Picanha has reached the desired internal temperature (115 degrees), it’s time to pull it out and let it rest for at least for 10 minutes and up to 15 minutes (while you get the searing grill up to heat). Then it’s time to sear it for a couple minutes per side to get that beautiful crust and get it to the final desired temp. I like to do my searing on a blazing hot charcoal grill, I open up all of the vents and get it as hot as it will go—usually around 900-950 degrees. With the huge fat cap on this cut,
when you’re searing on that side you’ll definitely see some flames come up, so be careful with this part and make sure you don’t overcook it. After the sear—since we rested before it’s good to slice up—but you can let it sit before slicing if you need to get your side dishes ready. I like to serve this up with some asparagus and baked sweet potatoes or sweet potato fries.
Overall, this method of cooking whole Picanha is a great way to bring out the flavors and tenderness of this delicious cut of beef. The reverse sear allows for some amazing smoky flavor while keeping it super tender, and the sear at the end with this big fat cap gives it some phenomenal crust. So next time you’re looking for a new recipe/cut of beef to try, consider giving Picanha a chance—you won’t be disappointed!
Susan Dolan knows real estate. And, she knows the finer points of style, design, and most of all, integrity.
Via her own experience of frequent corporate relocation, and with a personal passion for guiding clients to their happiest homes, she brings a flawless work ethic to her role as Senior Broker with Ivester Jackson Distinctive Properties. She’s a Senior Broker with Christie’s International Real Estate, and a member of Christie’s Master Circle, combining passion, perseverance, negotiating skills, and devotion to client needs and goals.
“During each personal move to a new city—where I had to start from square one myself— I knew it was my calling to help others through the real estate process, whether they were selling or buying,” shares Susan.
Her 19 years of experience, and in-depth knowledge of inventory and current market conditions, assures your process of property buying and selling will evolve efficiently and successfully. If you’re moving across town or across the country, Susan is there every step of the way.
“I want to make the process as seamless as possible, have fun, and be able to act quickly for my clients,” says Susan. “My goal is concierge service, from helping clients with paint colors for their new home, to blowing leaves off a driveway or from around the pool before a showing. Rolling up my sleeves and jumping in where I am needed is part of my work ethic!”
In fact, Susan describes “juggling 50 balls at once” as part of what makes this job so perfect for her. “I thrive on having 50 balls in the air, constantly shifting gears from seller to buyers, and problem solving. It keeps me engaged and excited about what I do.”
Susan has always been fully engaged with the task at hand, from college to launching her own business.
“I was an art major with a concentration in photography at Eastern Michigan University, and my subject matter was historic homes and architecture,” she says. “My art background has definitely been a benefit to my clients.”
Color theory is one design element Susan specializes in— understanding a color wheel and applying that to a design set can be crucial.
“I have a gorgeous new listing coming on the market where we had to adjust the interior paint color due to it throwing a heavy lavender undertone,” she adds. “We chose a paint with a green undertone to counteract the lavender.”
After college, Susan had a career in Human Resources for several years, which helped her master client relationships. In 2002, she received her real estate license in Arizona, then three years later she relocated to Southern California and started her staging business, Elements of Design.
“As an ASP Professional I helped many of my California clients sell their homes when the market started to shift in 2006,” explains Susan. “In 2009, once my real estate business became established, my staging became an added value for clients. I’ve been blessed with being able to see
past what is in front of me, and help clients realize the true potential of a home.”
That intense desire to help others is where Susan shines!
“The sense of helping others realize their dream is an amazing feeling, whether it is selling their home for top dollar, or helping them find their perfect home,” says Susan. “I am 110% vested in their vision and goals.”
At the end of the day, the takeaway is simple: “You can make a positive impact if you keep your eyes open for possibilities. All these little things may seem meaningless or whimsical, but most of my business is from referrals. I believe it’s those little things that mean the most, and that’s what encourages referrals.”
Susan and her family have now called North Carolina home for 14 years, after living all over the U.S., from Maryland to California. The beauty of Lake Norman was definitely an attraction. “The low overall cost of living around the lake, as well as it being a bedroom community of Charlotte, has been a huge driving factor. Lake Norman is currently seeing an influx of buyers who see the area as a vacation destination, and waterfront homes are being bought for vacation rentals. There is so much to do locally, plus Lake Norman is convenient to both the mountains and the beach, if you get tired of the lake life.”
For Susan, that would be never, as she grew up in Michigan on Lake Erie, as part of a dedicated boating family. “Every Summer we were on the lake, and we were members of the local yacht club. I grew up a lover of the water and all the fun that comes with boating and watersports. When we relocated to the Metro Charlotte area, Lake Norman was a natural choice when deciding where to raise our family. We chose Denver because it was a little off the beaten path.”
Susan says it was the best move she and her family have ever made.“I feel I’m qualified to make that statement, based on the amount of moves we have made over the years! I feel Lake Norman offers everyone an amazing opportunity—whether you are moving here for a new career, to start a family, or to retire— the area has something for everyone.”
Always active in the community, Susan was a huge supporter of Lincoln County Schools during her children’s younger years. Once they graduated and were off to college, she became involved in many networking groups, and in 2022, she was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce. She’s also been nominated as Chair of the East Lincoln Business Betterment Association. When not working, you may find her on the pickleball court, or paddleboarding and wake skiing during lake season! You’ll find Susan juggling the career she loves so much, in the Charlotte, Cornelius, Davidson, Denver, Huntersville, Mooresville, Sherrills Ford, The Peninsula, The Point, and Troutman areas.

by MARTIE EMORY photography by CARRIE ALLENWith over 60 dedicated employees and 70-plus years in the industry, Logan Home Energy Services in Mooresville is your go-to expert for natural gas, oil, electric, and propane. Of course that also includes 24-hour airconditioning repairs (and yes, those warmer temperatures are coming!)— giving you peace of mind when you and your family need it most!
LET’S LOOK AT THE TOP FIVE REASONS TO GIVE LOGAN HOME ENERGY SERVICES A CALL THIS SPRING AND SUMMER!
• Your AC unit is making noises
• The unit is short-cycling (meaning a unit runs more frequently in shorter increments) With the cooling cycle stopping too soon, it can cause high humidity, burn out the compressor, and damage parts.
• Your AC unit is leaking water
• An unusually high energy bill
• The unit’s airflow is warm
Whether you need assistance with repairing or replacing your air conditioner, or complete weatherizing of your property, long-time customers know they can trust every experienced Logan employee. Written estimates are available, followed up with the absolute highest level of service on every job. There is never a surprise charge on your bill, thanks to their upfront quotes—as well as an opportunity for rebates and warranties.
Scott Boyles also suggests an energy-efficient tune-up for your unit before the approaching summer season, along with making sure filters are changed regularly. Keep trees and bushes cleared away from outdoor units, and make a yearly practice of keeping your system clean and wellmaintained to handle any extreme conditions. Also ask about their indoor air quality improvement services—specially geared towards those with allergies! Contaminants and pollutants affect air quality in your home, and can also cause health problems for asthma and allergy sufferers.
If your system is not heating or cooling, or you suspect there is a leak, the Logan team will perform a thorough inspection to pinpoint the issue. All technicians on staff are certified by the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) – the largest certification program in the United States. Logan Home Energy Services is also a Carrier® factory-authorized dealer
with access to the best products and installation techniques in the industry.
Logan’s Total Comfort Specialist approach to solving energy problems and providing whole house/building solutions for energy savings and comfort is also a top priority, no matter what the season.
“Taking the right steps to increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling system can have a big impact on your utility bills, as well as the comfort and health of your home overall,” explains Scott.
In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, up to 30% of a home’s energy consumption is lost through uninsulated walls, windows, and doors. This means your heating and cooling system will not have to work nearly as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature, leading to lower energy bills.
Scott agrees with the numbers: “Upgrading to super-efficient HVAC equipment can cut heating and cooling costs by 30-50%, so do not hesitate to contact us today!”
Proper insulation can also prevent mold growth, and mold can contribute to serious health concerns. When warm air escapes from your home, it can condense on cold surfaces like windows and walls, providing an ideal environment for mold to grow.
The Logan team is also your most trusted electrical company when you need electrical repair or replacement options, including installation of generators, EV chargers, and panel upgrades. Their service area covers Alexander, Catawba, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin counties – all of Central North Carolina – including 24/7 service when needed.

I likely aged myself, yet I remember that song, although it was written in 1964 by the Dixie Cups, nine years before I was born. I wonder if they had that name before there were actual Dixie cups we drank out of! It was a fun song filled with all the expectations and excitement of what marriage could be “Goin to the chapel of love.” I remember the day we were married, 30 years ago last month, and we were married in a chapel during spring in California. My wife and I were young, she was 19, and I was 20, and we had it all figured out, not! The truth is, we had no idea what we were doing. Yet there we stood, her in a frilly and flowing dress and me in a black tuxedo with a sad little excuse for a mustache running across my upper lip We stood face-to-face, exchanging vows and making promises to one another, promises which, at that moment, were not put to the test. After all, it was our wedding day, and although we exchanged vows and made promises, we like most people were thinking more about the wedding reception and watching Aunt Lila make a fool of herself on the dance floor.
I have officiated many weddings, and although I love standing with couples as they exchange their vows and make a covenant, which is what a marriage is built on, I have always thought the vows we take are not entirely based on reality. They should read more like this- “Here I stand with all my baggage, hurts, and brokenness. Tomorrow morning, I will not look this good!
It won’t always be easy, and I know we will go through hard times and moments when I am not your favorite person. We will undoubtedly experience deep valleys, and I can’t promise I will always say or do the right thing. I probably won’t. Oh yes, I also snore really loud and don’t like anyone telling me what to do. Are you all in?” Wouldn’t you agree? Those vows speak the truth of what your “I do” genuinely meant on your wedding day. Would you have said, “Yes, I am all in for that craziness? I DO!”
It’s soon, or maybe years after the wedding has passed, that you realize this one truth, a truth you did not fully understand on day one. In marriage, you don’t prove your promise at the altar. You prove your promise in the valley. It’s not at the altar where you show you’re all in. It’s in the middle of the valley- together.
Regardless of how you start, we will have seasons of marriage where we find ourselves standing in the valley, a place that seems so low and painful we can’t see how we will climb out of it. It’s in these moments that the promises we made are put to the test. Will we stand with one another and walk through the valley together- for better or worse, as we committed to? Will we choose to pick up the other and carry them through the difficult season- in sickness and health, as we committed to? Or will we decide to leave the other behind in the valley because this is not what we signed up for when we said, “I do?” The valleys will come, I promise you, and in the middle of the places we don’t want to be, we are called to stand with our spouse, once again face-to-face, and say, “I do commit to standing with you. I do promise to fight for you and us. I do vow to remain faithful to you. I do choose us- once again.”
The valleys we face in marriage are necessary. We are strengthened, stretched, and drawn closer to our spouses through them. And there is the keyword, through the valley. To experience the mountain tops in our marriage, we must go through the valley, not around it. Even in the valley, there is beauty. In the valley season, you find yourself today or will in the future; I encourage you to stand together, climb the mountain as one and prove the promise you made at the altar. Remember where you started and return to the “chapel of love.”

The company’s dedication to excellence in construction is rare, and their promise remains that quality is never sacrificed in favor of speed or cost.
“Quality work at competitive prices is the achievement of P.S. West Construction Co.,” explains Roy. “Over our 93 years in existence, we have developed the ability to design, estimate, manage, and construct almost any building, thanks to a staff trained the best way—through experience.”
No challenge is too large or too small for the current team of 17 employees at P.S. West Construction, and the office staff proudly have over 200 years of combined experience. The field staff boasts an average of over 20 years with the firm. Clients know, with certainty, that the company throws the full weight of its team behind every project, to deliver the results you’ve come to expect from them through the years. The team shares a passion for creative designs, original solutions, and longstanding expertise in the field, as well as a respect for budgets and deadlines! From medical offices, warehouses, and restaurants, to retail space renovations, or a full commercial makeover of your space, this is the first call to make when you’re developing a construction project.
With roots that date back to January of 1930, P.S. West literally started with a mule and wagon to haul sand from Third Creek to the City of Statesville—ready to pour its sidewalks. The company of ErvinWest Construction Co., Inc. was formed by P.S. West of Statesville, NC, and Carl W. Ervin of Catawba, NC, with Mr. Ervin handling estimating while Mr. West supervised building. When Mr. Ervin left the company in 1939, Mr. West took over sole management and changed the name of the company to P.S. West Construction Co., Inc. West’s son, J. Roscoe, who graduated from then NC State College with a BS degree in Civil Engineering & Construction, helped his father run the company, and three other sons—S. Eugene, R.C., and Fred West, were active in the firm as superintendents.
In the early 1990’s Roy bought out Julian and became the sole owner, and in 2015, he added Michael (Mike) Clark and Tammy Wyatt as partners in the management of the company.
The early years of P.S. West focused on establishing the reputation that’s still recognized today: building quality buildings and lasting relationships that stand the test of time. During World War II, the firm did work for the Army Corps of Engineers at Morris Field, Camp Hoffman, Fort Bragg, Blumenthal Air Base, Camp Davis, and Fort Fisher.
The firm also built housing projects during the war in Charlotte, High Point, Raleigh, Tarboro, and Jacksonville in North Carolina, Spartanburg in South Carolina, and Savannah in Georgia. Many landmarks built in and around Statesville remain in use today, including the Mitchell Community College Library, the Wachovia building (now the Griffin Insurance building), the new Post Office, and the Statesville Country Club.
“We have enjoyed many years of repeat business from the same clients, largely because of the relationships cultivated by the West Family, and our office and field staff,” says Mike. “It all boils down to a reputation of doing what we say we will do, and producing a quality product.”
“Ken Brendle, Sr. Project Manager, and the P.S. West team were professional and very detail-oriented. It was a challenging project in an older building, and their ability and commitment to find solutions made the process less stressful. They were truly ‘on our team’ from start to finish, and they were a delight to work with.” - Katy Kindred, Kindred’s Restaurant, Davidson, NC

SCHOOL DANCES? FOR ME IT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF BIG CHRISTMAS GATHERINGS AND THE ONE TIME OF YEAR WHEN OUR GRANDMOTHER’S SPECIAL PUNCH WOULD BE SERVED. THE SPECIAL BOWL AND SMALL, ELEGANT GLASSES WOULD BE BROUGHT OUT AND SET AROUND THE BOWL TO MAKE THE TABLE LOOK FESTIVE AND FULL OF PROMISE.
With its history dating back to the 17th century, punch is considered to be the world’s earliest cocktail. It originated most likely in India, with some accounts suggesting that the name is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘paanch’. Others theorize that this wasn’t the case and that the drink’s name originates from puncheons, which was a term for alcohol barrels used on ships during that era. Punch was thought to be an alternative to beer which would spoil on the long voyages.
There were originally five basic elements of punch: a type of alcohol, citrus, sugar, water and spice (mainly nutmeg). From the ships, punch began to flow into fancy pubs, coffee houses and cocktail parties of the English society, which is where it began to be served in large, wide bowls known as punch bowls and ladled into individual glasses. Most often made of silver, ceramic or painted with inscriptions, these ornate bowls have become precious collector’s items today. One of these early American punch bowls, made by New York silversmith Cornelius Kierstede sometime between 1700 and 1710, was sold at a 2010 auction for $5.9 million, a record price for American silver.
From Britain, the drink spread around the world and to the American colonies where records suggest that America’s Founding Fathers drank bowls of punch to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
A prominent sight at social gatherings during the 19th and 20th centuries, punch bowls have managed to maintain their appeal over the years in large part due to their versatility. They have been used as table centerpieces filled with greenery, fresh flowers, lemons, or anything a creative hostess could dream up. They can function as a container of ice to chill wine or champagne. They can be filled with candy at holiday time to delight the children who come to visit (young and young at heart). Even when empty, a punch bowl looks beautiful sitting proudly on a table.
In my memories of punch, there was always a beautifully ornate ice ring floating in the bowl to keep the delicious beverage cool. To make an ice ring, many people use a bundt cake pan or other ice mold and fill it with ingredients from the punch along with fruit to make it especially eyecatching. This keeps your punch from getting watered down the way it would if the ice ring only contained water.
Always make sure you have enough cups for your guests and that your ladle is ready for serving. Just like a cocktail, punch is even more fun and special for your guests when you have garnishes available on the buffet table. To garnish your punch, think fruit, herbs, or edible flowers. Any of these will give your punch flavor and wow your guests. Citrus slices, berries, melon balls, fresh mint and cucumber are just some of the things you can experiment with depending on the type of punch you’re serving and what appeals to your senses.
As a final touch, you may want to add a cute paper umbrella to each guest’s cup just for fun. Whatever you do, keep it in the spirit that punch was always intended…festive and social. A great way to bring people together around a lovely bowl filled with your delicious creation.

When George McAllister moved his beekeeping operation from Charlotte to his lake home in Terrell last year, he brought with him quite the family tradition. George’s grandfather taught him the finer points of the craft, passed along from his grandfather, with family ties to beekeeping going back to the late 1800s.
Young George put together his own beekeeping operation in high school, and though he followed the corporate route as a consultant, has returned to his beekeeping roots in recent years—a huge win for Lake Norman area residents.
Since these are now “lake bees” their honey comes from the wide variety of plants growing around the lake, explains George.
“The taste of local honey is something you never forget. It stays with you like a fond memory!” he adds.
Honey lovers are also learning how perfect this local product can be as a natural sweetener—and the perfect substitute for sugar in many recipes. While it can be a good way to decrease your sugar intake, here are some points to keep in mind!
Visit beesoflakenorman.com to learn more about George’s business and purchase your own delicious locally made honey!
• Honey is actually sweeter than sugar, so use less honey than sugar in your recipe. Use 3/4 cup of honey for every one cup of sugar called for in a recipe. Since honey is a liquid sweetener, you may also need to adjust the liquid content of the recipe. For every one cup of honey used, reduce the liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup.
• Know your recipe well before making the switch! Honey can change the taste of your recipe, and works best in recipes that have a mild or complementary flavor. It’s ideal for muffins, cakes, and cookies, but you may want to avoid using honey in recipes with another strong flavor, such as chocolate recipes, as the honey flavor may overpower the chocolate.
• Choosing the right type of honey can also affect the taste of your recipe. Lighter honey, such as clover or orange blossom, has a milder flavor, while darker honey, such as buckwheat or avocado, has a stronger flavor that’s not a match for all recipes!
• Honey caramelizes faster than sugar, so reduce the cooking temperature to prevent your recipe from burning. Reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees Fahrenheit when using honey in baked goods, and in a stovetop recipe, reduce the heat to medium-low.
• Remember honey can change the color of your finished product, giving baked goods a darker or golden hue.
• If you aren’t quite ready to completely substitute honey for sugar, consider using it in combination with other sweeteners, including sugar, maple syrup, or agave nectar, to reduce the amount of sugar in your recipe while still achieving the desired sweetness.
• The addition of honey in baked goods can also help keep them moist. But, it can also affect shelf life. Store your baked goods in an airtight container to prevent them from becoming too moist, and always store honey in a cool, dry place to prevent it from crystalizing.

“We know that while we all have questions about God and what it means to believe, everyone wants to belong to something bigger than themselves. Our people love the fact that they can explore faith at their own pace, while belonging to a church that is trying to do good in our world.”
JEREL LAW LEAD PASTOR
With giving hearts and loving minds, Love Lake Norman is a church that cares deeply about you personally, and your neighbors down the street, and those across town!
True to their steadfast motto of “Belong before you believe”—Love Lake Norman’s goal is to help people find and follow Jesus, but they respect that everyone’s faith journey is not the same.
“‘Belong before you believe’ has been our motto from day one,” explains Lead Pastor Jerel Law. “We know that while we all have questions about God and what it means to believe, everyone wants to belong to something bigger than themselves. Our people love the fact that they can explore faith at their own pace, while belonging to a church that is trying to do good in our world.”
Love Lake Norman began on April 2, 2017, with their first service held at the Oak Street Mill in Cornelius. The church draws from the greater Charlotte area—including Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville, and Charlotte. Love Lake Norman has recently—and very thankfully—relocated services to the Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius, and their single 10:00 a.m. worship experience on Sundays is a blessing to all. With a family focus, “Love Kids” is the group’s children’s ministry for ages six weeks through fifth grade, and the youth ministry “Next Wave” serves sixth through twelfth grades.
With a strong mission to “Love Local,” the church spreads their work to local schools and apartments, and recently “left the building” one Sunday morning for a program they call “Love Serves.” In place of their regular service, over 200 volunteers went out into the community to serve where they were needed.
“We firmly believe our actions are as important as our words,” says Jerel, who is the very personable, incredibly positive lead pastor.
“I’ve been helping start churches for most of my adult ministry life—for the last 25 years or so,” he says. “It’s in my blood! Helping launch Love Lake Norman is the most fun I’ve had in ministry so far.”
Jerel and a team of other passionate leaders envisioned a place where people in the Lake Norman area—and beyond— could find a place to be accepted and belong, and at the same time be encouraged and challenged to take their next step and follow Jesus. The group is simply committed to building a church that shares hope with our world—hope that says there’s a bigger story where we all belong!
Last Thanksgiving they launched an initiative called “Holiday Love,” where members connected to families in need through school counselors, and provided meals and a shopping experience where neighbors could come and choose gifts for their own family in an interactive, dignified setting. The church plans a similar experience for 2023.
If you’re looking for a perfect Mother’s Day activity for your family this month, join Love Lake Norman on Sunday, May 14, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., for a community-wide event at Blackberry Ridge Farm on Beatties Ford Road in Huntersville. There will be a service, a flower bouquet-making station (for all the special women in your life!), fun kids’ activities, and a photographer onsite to snap family photos.
Read through their website and you’ll immediately feel welcomed at Love Lake Norman, and as it says—they are saving a seat for you!
Love Lake Norman meets on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. at The Cain Center for the Arts, 21348 Catawba Avenue, Cornelius, NC, 704-237-0654. You can email info@lovelkn.org for information on their ministries and how you can connect, and follow them on Instagram @lovelakenorman.
Born 9 weeks premature in 2013, Marek Czerwinski spent about 7 weeks at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte as a patient. Since then, he had been looking for ways to give back and in 2021, he found the perfect way to spread joy!
Developing a MAJOR love for inflatable decorations at a young age, he partnered with the hospital on a program called Inflated Joy! The concept is simple: he collects new, inflatable decorations (less than 4-5ft tall) to donate to kids who will be in the hospital during the holidays so that they, too, can experience the joy these decorations bring to so many—right in their hospital room!
During the first year, the program was featured in the Lake Norman Citizen and on local TV stations, including Spectrum News to help get the word out. Marek even participated at a Huntersville Town meeting to make the official announcement and got full support from the Mayor and many of the town Commissioners.
Inflated Joy didn’t JUST collect inflatables. With a wish list provided by the hospital, the program expanded the gift list to include holiday lights, books, games, infant items and small gift sets to make parents who are taking care of their children at the hospital more comfortable. This also allowed us to cast a wider net to reach more recipients to bring joy to those where an inflatable might not be the best fit. That first year, we were able to donate over 100 inflatables and other fun items!
New for 2023, we’ve decided to collect and donate items throughout the year! You will find our wish list registry is filled with a large variety of items at multiple price points. Some items are as low as $10 and under and will ship direct for us to donate. There is no need to go shopping anywhere but online or do any drop offs.
(Unless you absolutely want to, of course!) There will be birthday themed items, non-holiday themed inflatables and more to delight patients of all ages!
We know that there are so many in our neighboring communities here in the Lake Norman area that either know someone or have experienced first-hand the stress that comes from having a child in the hospital. Small tokens of joy can provide such small touches of normalcy and temporary relief in unspoken ways.
KNOW:
• All items should be new, with tags or in the original packaging.
• Toys should be easy to clean and sanitize due to health regulations.
• Cash Donations
• Used items. (This includes books.)
• Stuffed Animals
• Homemade items
Even if you are unable to donate, you can help simply by spreading the word! We’d be honored to have you help Inflated Joy!

BY THE NUMBERS
“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
Does anyone else struggle with how best to pray? I sure do. My biggest struggle is praying out loud with a group. I don’t think I’m the only one because there is always that question with a church group, “Would anyone like to close us in prayer?”. Usually, crickets. But there are some people that pray so eloquently that you’d think they must have a Ph.D. in prayer and make you feel even less adequate.
Not only do I struggle with praying out loud, but I also struggle with individual prayer. My mind is all over the place when I pray and often goes down a rabbit hole and I lose focus. Other times I try to correct myself because I feel that my prayers are out of order. Or I think that I need to be in a “prayer position” to pray properly. I’m not sure why we tend to get so ritualistic about prayer. The reality is that prayer doesn’t have to be complicated, it can be a simple approach and be just as, if not more, effective.
I believe that we tend to overcomplicate prayer...As I said above, we can use a simple approach which can be pared down as follows:
WOW | Praising Him
THANKS | Showing Gratitude
FORGIVE | Forgive Me for My Sins
HELP | Help with my Needs
PLEASE | Please Help my Friend/ Family Member
1. READ YOUR BOOK OF FAITH AND ASK YOURSELF QUESTIONS LIKE:
• Is there something here I should be thankful for?
• Is there something here that names a sin I should ask forgiveness for?
• Am I struggling with something this passage talks about and need to ask for strength?
• Is someone I know struggling with something in this passage?
2. STOP PRAYING AND START TALKING
Approach faith as a friend. Engage throughout the day with short messages, inviting faith to share in your life as you go through your daily activities. Just like our close relationships are maintained
by spending time together, so is our relationship with faith.
3.USE A PRAYER OR GRATITUDE JOURNAL
Make notes about what you will address in prayer or what you are grateful for.
4. TAKE SOME DEEP BREATHS TO PREPARE
Do some breathing exercises before you pray to get centered and calm your mind.
5.REMEMBER THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL HELP GUIDE YOU! Romans 8:26 provides some wonderful encouragement about prayer. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with prayers that words cannot express”.
Prayer is our opportunity to spend time with God and develop a deeper relationship with him. It also opens the door for God to work in our lives. Let’s keep it simple and try not to overcomplicate it. I think the result will be a richer prayer life and an enhanced understanding of the heart of God.
• Do you sometimes struggle with prayer?
• What has helped you when you have been at your best in your prayer life?
• What will you do to improve your prayer life going forward?
THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING ENTERTAINING AND FUN HAPPENING AT NOVEL TAPROOM IN NEWTON, NC—AND IF IT’S NOT ON YOUR REGULAR SCHEDULE OF AMAZING THINGS TO DO, COME EXPERIENCE THE EXCEPTIONAL VIBES HERE SOON!
Open since June 1, 2020, Novel Taproom is situated in a classic old building that originally housed a livery stable and blacksmith shop dating back to the 1870s. Novel owners Jeff and Sandy Allen focused simply on getting the indoor space renovated so they could open as soon as possible, but then COVID hit and turned things upside down. Post-lockdown, Novel Taproom opened to rave reviews and was an immediate hit—not only in Newton and Catawba County—but in many of the surrounding communities, and even statewide!
This unique venue draws large crowds for regular festive activities such as Trivia Night, Music Bingo, and Bunco, with exciting attention to detail that makes each event memorable. But what really shines at Novel Taproom is their dedication to live music! A huge drawing card and fan favorite, Jeff keeps bands booked about 12 months out. Now, with its stellar reputation as a great small live music venue that just happens to offer an amazing craft beer and wine selection, music has definitely put them on the map!
Fans are pouring in from all across the state, and Jeff notes Novel Taproom is bursting at the seams on weekends. But a new festive look was unveiled in April!
The next phase of growth is the addition of an outdoor entertainment space, including a huge elevated deck, with seating also available below. Guests will find a walk-up bar with an additional 12 taps of
craft beer, giving Novel a total of 42 beer taps to go with their robust wine selection.
To accompany the outdoor seating, look for an impressive outdoor stage! Outdoor concerts will allow Novel to better accommodate large crowds—a good problem to have!—and Jeff is working with the City of Newton to close a block of the street beside the taproom to allow for even bigger gatherings on special concert nights. (That street is also included in the Social District.)
Jeff orchestrates a lively and diverse musical lineup that appeals to a wide range of tastes: plenty of classic rock, 90s rock, country, outlaw country, blues, and bluegrass. And as their business and loyal fan base continue to grow, Jeff says he is looking to expand to the Sherrills Ford area, and would absolutely love to have a location in downtown Hickory!
Welcome spring and summer with the best live music and craft beer combination around. Gather with friends soon at The Novel Taproom, located at 12 N. Ashe Avenue, Newton, NC, 704-576-0603. Hours are Monday through Thursday 3:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Friday 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., Saturday 2:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Visit them online at thenoveltaproom.com and on Instagram @noveltaproom for updates on live music and even more extraordinary events!
If you’re to go by the scenes you see in movies, television and on social media, Mother’s Day is the sweetest and most relaxing day of celebration there is. Happy smiling mothers being fed breakfast in bed by cherub faced toddlers, given bouquets of flowers, and sent off to the spa after a relaxing brunch. In reality, this is often not the case. If breakfast in bed is given, especially by a toddler, it often requires more time cleaning up by the mother afterward than is spent actually eating in bed. Trying to get children to behave nicely at brunch, I can tell you from experience, is a task unlike any other. And the spa, who really has time for that?
The normal annoyances mothers face on this day of celebration are one thing, but what about those who truly struggle on Mother’s Day. There are countless reasons people can struggle on this day—their mothers have passed away, they have a fraught relationship with their mother, they’re dealing with infertility, they’ve lost a child, or they don’t have a supportive partner—all of these are valid reasons to want to cocoon into themselves for the entire weekend.
One mother I spoke to is coming up on her first Mother’s Day after a miscarriage and has very complicated feelings about the upcoming reminder. A local mother of two living children, and two angels, she states “On one hand, I am dreading the day, especially since I didn’t disclose to my young children about my loss, so they won’t fully understand why I’m not myself. On the other hand, I don’t want to deprive myself of a happy day, because I truly love being their mother and want to enjoy my day with them.”
Another local mother spoke about her struggles when her children were young and her husband always worked weekends. “I would be
home by myself with two toddlers and scrolling on Instagram to see all my friends out to brunch, getting handmade cards, and breakfast in bed, and I felt so much jealousy. I love my husband, and he always tried to make it up to me, but it was still hard wishing I could do the traditional things on Mother’s Day that I always imagined I would do. After a few years of this, I made a ‘no social media’ rule on Mother’s Day and would do a fort and movie day—it made the day way more fun”.
So how do we deal with all of these big feelings? Make big plans to do something else, so the day is no longer “Mother’s Day” it’s “insert activity here” Day. Find friends who are also not feeling the holiday either and go hiking; nature is a great healing presence as well. Go to the movies and treat yourself to a big bucket of popcorn—extra buttery. Go to the zoo and spend the day distracted by animals and a good walk in the fresh air.
Another healthy strategy that the mother above used is to shut off social media for the day so we aren’t comparing our day with everybody else’s. Let’s also remind ourselves that social media is not real and what you see isn’t necessarily what is actually going on in that person’s life. So shut off your access to the outside world, and cocoon yourself with the things that bring you joy. Make yourself a cup of tea and crack open a library book if that’s what helps you feed your soul. Or make a fort in the living room and spend the day watching a movie marathon, or binge watching your favorite television show.
Most importantly, prioritize yourself and your mental health. If doing a certain thing on this day doesn’t serve you—don’t do it. Be kind to yourself, and remember you are not alone.
Always the guiding light dedicated to helping her family, friends, neighbors, and entire community, entrepreneur Michelle Brown also knows the peacefulness of keeping life orderly—or at least as much as possible!
With 20 years experience as a police officer in upstate Rochester, New York, Michelle relocated with her family to the Lake Norman area after retirement, and found herself launching a new life chapter.
“As a family, we decided that I would be the one to manage the home front here,” says Michelle. “This was also supposed to allow me time to adjust to a much slower pace of life, as a stay-home mom.”
But soon realizing her teenage daughters are now pretty selfsufficient, and feeling the need to be busy again after so many active years, Michelle has relayed a seemingly mundane task into an exciting small business—Clean Sweeps of LKN!
“Cleaning has always been therapeutic for me,” she explains. “With all this free time on my hands, I came up with the idea to start my own residential cleaning service. Living in the Lake Norman area allows me to work nearby— and after being retired four years now—I seem to have come to enjoy being my own ‘boss lady’ and making my own schedule!”
The business will be focused on areas closest to her home—Sherrill’s Ford, Terrell, Mooresville, Troutman, Denver, Cornelius, and Huntersville—and include both large and small residential cleaning jobs, deep cleaning, spring cleaning and move-in/move-out cleaning, as well as Air BNBs and short-term rentals.
“I pride myself on being honest and truthful, and I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, at least that’s what I’ve been told quite often!” shares Michelle. “I do have this philosophy: What’s the use of doing something halfway, when you’ll have to return to do it the right way?”
Known for working methodically and thoroughly in everything she does, Michelle strongly believes a person’s home and their
belongings should always feel safe.
“That’s what sets me apart from other cleaning companies,” she says. “Not only my attention to detail—but my integrity.” The goal of Clean Sweeps of LKN will always remain the same: Provide reliable services while making sure clients know this is a totally professional company they can trust.
As the business grows, Michelle would like to offer First Responders and military personnel a discount on their residential cleaning services.
“At the height of my career, I was a mother of five children myself, and my husband and I worked long hours, which included every weekend and lots of overtime,” she explains. “As a family, we worked it out together on ‘cleaning day’ which was pretty much the least busy day of that particular week. Covid and staff shortages are still causing folks to work under extreme demands these days. People of all careers—and especially law enforcement, dispatchers, EMTs, and fire fighters, are working tirelessly.”
Michelle has a personal goal of helping customers who may only have one day off each week, clean their homes.
“I would love to allow them more free time for their families. or for them to have a true ‘R’ day (we refer to an R day as our rest day!) With my law enforcement background, I also hope to provide an element of trust, integrity, and safety. I not only want to appeal to First Responders, but also typical clients who are entrusting their home, belongings, and treasures to an outsider.”
The enormous level of professionalism and comfort Michelle is building is sure to be welcomed in the Lake Norman community, and Clean Sweeps of LKN will soon offer a booking site with an availability schedule. You can currently review pricing plans and book online at Cleansweepsoflkn.com, email CleanSweepsLKN@ gmail.com, or call 828-994-1996 if you have an urgent residential cleaning need. The Green Room Community Theatre is a funded affiliate of The United Arts Council of Catawba County and is located in historic downtown Newton, NC.I was standing on my deck the other day watching a guy on a fishing boat slowly troll past my dock in the pouring cold rain. He didn’t catch anything and meandered along the shore testing all the docks for bites but coming away empty handed. As the rain turned from downpour to sideways I thought to myself, “That guy either really loves fishing or really hates being home on his days off.”
Observing the people who come by my house fishing is one of the great joys of living at the lake. No one ever catches anything by my house. It makes me wonder if there’s some kind of buried toxic sludge or something else keeping all the fish away. I wish I could warn the fishermen or put a sign by our cove letting them know that they won’t catch anything if they enter, but I’m afraid it’d backfire and they’d think I’m hiding some top notch fishing hole from them and they’d come en masse.
I like when they get close to my dock doing slow drivebys and steering with their feet as they cast. If I tried to steer with my feet, fish, and chew gum at the same time, you can be guaranteed that someone’s dock would be getting run over by my boat.
Some of the fishermen who come in close will wear big, expensive looking glasses and vests full of tiny pockets with inflatable life vests that explode on impact if they fall into the water. I
sometimes wonder if I sprayed them with my pressure washer while cleaning my dock if their vests would inflate. Their boats are covered with stickers of what I assume are fishing companies, but I’m so out of touch with fishing that I don’t recognize a single one of the brand names they’re promoting. It’s probably not a big deal for those fishing companies since I found my fishing rod on the bottom of the lake when I stepped on it—I’m probably not the target market for the fishing industry.
While my fishing rod came off the bottom of the lake, my tackle box disappeared there. One of the neighborhood kids kicked it off the dock along with my sunglasses after he ran through my line as I was trying to tie on a hook that ended up embedded in my finger. I wish I could say it was my worst day fishing, but one time my friend and I had waded in the lake up to our waists while fishing and that’s when he realized his phone and car key fob were still in his pockets and that we would be (briefly) stranded.
Once that same friend hired a guide to take him and his dad fishing and they zipped around the lake catching fish with every cast. His dad had a GPS unit in his jacket pocket and was dropping pins on every spot the guide took them. Those two hit all the same spots a week later and didn’t get a single bite. I guess that’s fishing for you. Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you drive into my cove and get skunked.
