CAIN CENTER FOR THE ARTS

W H E R E I N S P I R AT I O N & E D U C AT I O N TA K E C E N T E R S TA G E by MARTIE EMORY Creativity rules at Cain Center for the Arts! Since the curtain first went up in 2023, the venue has achieved its aspirations to present exceptional visual arts, performing arts and social experiences to residents of the Lake Norman community. Cain Center honors education, inspiration and entertainment as its guiding values. Founding Executive Director Justin Dionne believes a varied repertoire of events, along with creative learning and an amazing art gallery onsite, creates a unique approach to the arts in the Lake Norman region. “We’re thrilled to offer the community an array of diverse programming – from theater, to dance, to comedy, to all genres of music. Between our exciting performing arts season, our rotating and innovative art galleries and our much-loved arts education classes for both youth and adults, we’ve been able to serve more than 15,000 people in the Lake Norman community in just our first year,” said Justin. With a vibrant performing arts series, the center promises something magical for everyone in the next few months! February 24: Sons of Mystro (brothers and rising stars who use their violins to interpret reggae classics, American pop songs and their own creations) March 15: Socks in the Frying Plan (an award-winning trio from County Clare, Ireland, the hub of Irish traditional music)

April 26: Comedian Karen Morgan (Karen got her start on Nickelodeon’s Search for the Funniest Mom in America!) May 11: Buckets N Boards (Hilarious, high-energy percussion at its best) From February 29 - March 2, don’t miss Be More Chill, the first performance of a brand-new initiative that pairs the area’s most skilled theatre students together with a challenging piece of musical theater, resulting in a unique staged concert. “The uniqueness of Cain Center for the Arts allows us a distinct opportunity to make an impact in the Lake Norman region,” said Justin. “We’re so pleased to have been able to work with so many community partners over the last several years to make this project a reality, and we’ve got great things in store for the years to come!” The center’s Community Impact Programs are varied ranging from teaching a candle-making workshop for seniors, to hosting a holiday event for students from the Ada Jenkins Center, or providing free tickets to performances. Those efforts are constantly expanding as the Cain Center team learns more about what its neighbors want to see – and how the venue can provide the most impact. The beauty of Cain Center for the Arts is the many ways you can be involved – as an artist, student, volunteer or audience member! Programs for all ages and tastes make that possible, and local contributions are an essential component of the overall annual operations, as well as keeping ticket prices affordable.

Show support by becoming a Friend of Cain Center, a group that supports all programs including arts education for youth and adults, summer camps for youth and diverse visual art exhibits, including bringing world-class artists and established regional arts groups to the Cain Center stage. VOLUME XII

A BOW OF GALLANTRY by T Y L E R A . H A M P T O N

After a busy holiday season and taking a little breather in January, A Bow of Gallantry is back… I’d like to personally thank all of you who read this every month, and those of you who have patronized the new Hampton’s location in downtown Mooresville. This March will mark ten years of business for Hampton’s, and 2023 was our best yet; we owe it all to you. The warm welcome from our downtown neighbors and the Mooresville Downtown Commission has made our relocation extraordinarily pleasant, and we are excited to see what comes to town in the coming year… but for now, let’s talk about what’s coming up quickly. The Spring season is on its way, and that means formal events are right around the corner! Whether they be weddings, charity galas, or club parties, chances are, you’re going to need formal attire for at least one occasion in the near future. For some, that may sound like a hassle; for the distinguished man, however, it’s an exciting opportunity to escort his lady fair and demonstrate his sartorial brilliance… or maybe he’s going stag and wants to stand out in the best way. It’s not a chore; it’s a chance.

the wearer look taller and slimmer, and the ventless back is to create a slimmer silhouette at the seat. These all may seem like minute details, but I’ve always believed that if you’re going to do something, you should do it correctly. While there are relatively strict rules pertaining to formalwear, you can still add your own touch. Whether through accessories such as your stud and cufflink set, your bow tie and cummerbund, or your formal footwear, there are plenty of ways to set yourself apart from the boring (or even worse, the tuxedo renters). Another fun touch, especially at Springtime events, is a dinner jacket. A dinner jacket has the aforementioned features of a tuxedo jacket, but uses a unique fabric such as the ever-elegant pure silk ivory or a brighter, more fun paisley pattern. It’s okay to venture out of your comfort zone… and we, at Hampton’s, would be happy to help! Remember… if the invitation says black-tie-optional, opt for black tie. You won’t regret it. - Tyler Hampton

There are certain items every man should have in his wardrobe whether or not he wears them often. Two of the most notable are a dark suit (in a navy or grey) and a tuxedo, both welltailored to him. These two garments are staple pieces and can carry you through nearly anything life throws your way. For the suit, it’s appropriate for numerous occasions: job interviews, work, dinners, parties, weddings, funerals, and black-tieoptional affairs. The tuxedo has its place in any formal setting requiring black-tie or black-tie-optional dress. With these two specifically, it’s less about how often you wear them, and more having them when you need them… I regularly see guys coming into the store in a frenzy needing a suit for the next day. Don’t be that guy, because then you compromise on the most important detail of both items: a well-tailored fit. When we’re talking suits and tuxedos, it’s also imperative to know the differences. Many ready-to-wear manufacturers are now putting satin trim on a black suit and calling it a tuxedo. They do this because it’s the least expensive way to produce a “tuxedo,” and it looks as such. A proper tuxedo jacket will feature peak lapels or a shawl collar, satin or grosgrain trim, one button in the front instead of two, piped pockets instead of flaps, and a ventless back. Each of these features serves a purpose: notch lapels and flap pockets are far too casual for formal attire, the satin or grosgrain trim is to accentuate the formality of the jacket, the one-button closure sits lower than a two-button, creating a longer and deeper V shape to make

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS… by GENEVIEVE CONDON

Valentine’s Day. The day in which you are expected to spend tons of money to prove to someone you love them...

Okay, okay, I know I sound jaded, and it isn’t because I don’t believe in love - I am happily married - but I don’t believe that you need to spend huge amounts of money to prove for ONE day that someone means something to you. I remember my first Valentine’s Day with my husband and how this helped shape our marriage entirely. We are pretty simple people. We like going out to eat, but Applebee’s for a date night is more our scene vs. fancy silverware and pinstriped suit jackets. So, when we decided our first Valentine’s Day had to be something out of a Hallmark movie, it was no surprise it became something more out of Pretty Woman (think the escargot scene). We got all dressed up. I think I wore two pairs of spanx to ensure all things stayed in place and my husband wore a button up shirt much to his chagrin. The restaurant’s cheapest plate started at $75.00 and everything was sold separately. What do you mean it’s $110.00 just for the steak? I just wanted some French fries and a burger. We giggled the whole time, probably too loudly for some of the patrons, as we both looked at each other struggling to figure out which fork goes with which course (thank you, Google) and stared in awe at our plates that came with just enough steak to feed a newborn baby. I swear it was only one bite. We ended up passing on dessert and still spending almost one of our entire paychecks at the time and drove to someplace really special to us: the mall. The mall held a special sentiment to us, as on our first date we went to the mall and got milkshakes at this kiosk. Holy delicious!

18 | lkn-magazine.com

Dressed to impress, I hobbled to the milkshake kiosk on my way-too-high heels and ordered my favorite. Hand in hand we walk through the mall, laughing and joking about what a disaster dinner was, vowing to never spend money on something just because we feel we have to in order to seem cool or keep up with the Joneses. We quickly realized we just aren’t those people. Over the years, our Valentines Day’s have changed, now including children, but we have stayed true to a few things. Simple is more our style and we don’t have to spend a lot of money to know that the other one cares about them. To be honest I haven’t even thought about Valentine’s Day this year. It’s nice to not have to stress about a fancy reservation, a dress that makes me super uncomfortable or trying to find the perfect gift to express how much I love my husband. Every day we are blessed to wake up next to each other, and usually a toddler in between, snuggle in bed and watch cartoons. Every day we make sure to let the other know how much we care with little things like buying their favorite snack when out running errands, or a quick peek on the cheek when they least expect it. I have learned over the years that it is the little things all throughout the year that solidify love and companionship in a relationship, not one day but days, months, and years all coming together to form a relationship that will last a lifetime. So remember that, if you can’t afford a fancy dinner or a car that shines as bright as your love for your significant other, it’s okay because at the end of the day, it’s the little things that matter the most.

LET KINDNESS BE OUR GUIDE TO CHANGING THE WORLD by M E G A N TAY L O R Celebrated the week of February 12th through the 19th, Random Acts of Kindness Week is dedicated to promoting kindness throughout the United States. While events and acts of kindness take place throughout the week, there is a great emphasis on the National Random Acts of Kindness Day which is Friday, February 17th. This day was first honored in Denver, Colorado in 1995. According to the website, Love ‘N Learn Educational Child Care, the day is set aside to “make the world a little brighter and better through little and simple kind gestures, words, and actions.” As for the week, its history dates back to 1982 when Anne Herbert coined the phrase “practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” Herbert crafted this phrase in California as a response to acts of violence and cruelty, hoping to put a stop to them. In 1993, a children’s book, Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty was published. From there, the Random Acts of Kindness Week and Day have spread throughout the world, all with the same goal of making the world a little kinder. In addition to making the world a better place, giving and receiving kindness can have many benefits. When you are helping others and yourself, you can reduce your stress, improve your happiness, selfesteem, and mood - all beneficial to your mental health and wellbeing. In addition, showing kindness can help create a sense of belonging, reduce our sense of isolation, and help us change our perspective on the world. Through random acts of kindness, we are able to see how our actions have impacts on others and give us a more positive viewpoint. Combine all of these advantages together and we can easily see how kindness can change the world for ourselves, individually and collectively, and for the better. During Random Acts of Kindness Week and especially on National Random Acts of Kindness Day, be sure to show kindness towards yourself and others. Whether it is by yourself or with your loved ones, the goal is to complete at least one random act of kindness, hopefully each day of the week. The key to accomplishing this goal is to make sure the acts are random. You don’t have to put much thought into them;

20 | lkn-magazine.com

you just do them because they are kind and the right thing to do. Simple actions, such as holding the door open for a stranger or giving a compliment, don’t take much time and can easily be done. However, it is equally important to take part in bigger tasks that may take more planning and time to complete, but are random and a surprise to the recipients. One way to do just that is by showing kindness on a larger scale on Friday, February 17, the National Random Acts of Kindness Day. You can also turn Saturday and/or Sunday of that week into daylong events of volunteering. There are many ways to demonstrate kindness, which can be modified for all ages, as well as, for an individual or group. • Donate groceries to a local food bank • Surprise someone with homemade goodies • Donate food, blankets, and toys to the animal shelter • Run an errand for a family member, neighbor, or friend • Create positive bookmarks for books at your library • Leave money on a vending machine for someone to find • Call your neighborhood school and pay off lunch debt for students • Buy a gift card and randomly hand to a stranger in a store or restaurant • Write a thank you note to your friends, teachers, mail carrier, police department, hospital, etc. • Pick up a piece of litter on the street and throw it away • Compliment a coworker to your boss • Build a little free library in your neighborhood or a needed area in town • Reconnect with a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while • Write an encouraging note for someone who may need it • Volunteer at your favorite nonprofit Let this week, the Random Acts of Kindness Week, be the start to changing the world. Kindness should be the norm for all people and each day should be filled with at least one random act of kindness. Together, we can make an impact for the better. As spoken in the movie Evan Almighty: “How do we change the world? One single act of random kindness at a time.”

VA L E N T I N E ’ S DAY STRAWBERRY PUFF PASTRY TART by K AT H A R I N E R O S E N T H A L , R D N

A perfect and simple dessert for Valentine’s Day with fresh strawberries, strawberry jam and an easy glaze! 6. Take about one tablespoon of jam and spread it over each puff pastry. Bake for an additional two minutes. 7. Take the sliced strawberries and arrange them over the pastries – I like to cover the whole puff pastry! 8. Make the glaze by mixing all three ingredients in a small bowl and drizzle over the puff pastries. You can always add less heavy cream, check the consistency and add more, if needed.

Servings: 6 Prep time: 5 minutes Total time: 20 minutes Ingredients: • 1 package puff pastry sheets • 6 T strawberry jam • 8 ounces fresh strawberries, sliced or cut into a heart shape

Recipe Tips: • Use “no sugar added” jam to cut back on sugar or use ½ tablespoon of jam instead. • Cut the strawberries into hearts by buying a mini cookie cutter or using a paring knife to shape yourself.

Glaze: • 1 cup powdered sugar • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • ¼ cup heavy whipping cream Instructions: 1. Thaw the puff pastry for about 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spread a sheet of parchment paper onto the baking sheet. 3. Cut the puff pastry into six, four-inch rectangles using the folds as a guide. With a fork, poke the centers of the puff pastries. 4. Place the puff pastries on the baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until they are golden brown and puffed up. 5. Remove from the oven, take a fork and press down in the center of each pastry.

L O V E N O T E S : H O W T O C R E AT E A MEANINGFUL, BEAUTIFUL LOVE NOTE FOR ANYONE YOU LOVE by K A R E N C O O P E R It is always a good time to express your feelings to those you love. In fact, the theory goes…the more love we put out into the world, the more will come back to us. And in the month of February, you have a special opportunity as St. Valentine’s Day approaches, to show through the written word just how much those in your life mean to you. Writing a love note gives you the chance to think through your thoughts and find just the right words to convey your admiration and appreciation for your intended recipient. You can choose the tone of the letter and the content based on how it will best be received and know that the words you write will come straight from your heart. A handwritten note is particularly special and intimate since the practice of handwritten notes is not as customary as it once was. It’s something the reader can return to again and again to remember how special your words made them feel. You can decide whether your note will be delivered in person or by mail. You ultimately decide how your note will be written, but here are some ideas for making your message of love as meaningful and memorable as it can be… Tell the person you’re writing exactly why you’re taking the time to write to them A love note or note of admiration is a unique type of correspondence, and you need to make sure the object of your affection understands the reason you are writing. Pick something you love about the person What makes your special person stand out from the crowd? What do you especially love about them? Write it down in detail. The things you appreciate most may not be the things your beloved considers to be his or her most obvious strengths, so tell them why it matters. Include a happy memory the two of you have shared As you are writing your letter, choose a particularly

24 | lkn-magazine.com

fond memory and write about it in detail. Tell the one you’re writing how that memory made you feel. What you may not know is your memory may be something your recipient has forgotten over time and this may bring back a wonderful feeling for them. Choose the right stationery for your letter Since a love letter is not just an everyday piece of correspondence, it should not look like one. This is a time to get creative. Visit your craft store and find special paper, lace hearts, pressed flowers, stickers, or any other additions that you choose. This is a note you want the recipient to be wowed by. Don’t forget to buy a special envelope, too. Make it beautiful. Make it your own creation. Talk about the difference the person has made in your life If you’re writing a note such as this, surely your life has changed for the better since meeting this person. This is something you will want to convey in your letter. Explain in detail how this person has enhanced your life and give some examples of how that is true. Be genuine to who you are It is most important to make this note an authentic expression of your own true feelings. Let your own personality come through in your writing. Don’t write words that don’t reflect who you really are. Speak from your heart and let your writing flow naturally. Never say anything you don’t mean Think about what this relationship means to you now in the present moment. Allow your writing to reflect what is true now and do not make grandiose promises or gestures. You may want to write about what you admire or appreciate about the recipient of your note. Perhaps you could tell them why you love a special talent or creative ability they have. Let them know that you see who they are and truly recognize their special gifts. Nothing feels better than knowing someone cares about what matters most to you.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY

FEBRUARY 11, 2024 by L I N D S E Y F I S H E R If your team is playing or not, Super Bowl Sunday is an iconic American social gathering that transcends traditional definitions of a sporting event. It has evolved into a cultural phenomenon, celebrated by millions of people across the country, regardless of their level of interest in football. Each year, we gather, hoping that the following Monday was a day off of school and work. If your team is playing, you are super excited to watch the game! If not, you are probably more excited about the food, drinks and social time. As food takes center stage at most of these gatherings, it does not have to blow your diet. Hopefully, you have not already forgotten about those healthy 2024 resolutions! Enjoy the game and time with family and/or friends. If you want to learn how to take your mind, body and spiritual health to an exceptional level this year and release what has been holding you back contact Lindsey directly at LindseyFisherNC.com.

5 Tips for Super Bowl Success: • Do not go to your Super Bowl party hungry. Have a balanced snack or protein shake before the party starts. • If you choose to drink alcohol, for every alcoholic beverage you enjoy, also drink a glass of water. This will better prepare you for that alarm clock on Monday morning. Or, try a mocktail instead. • Do not hang out by the food table. Get a plate of your favorites and move on. • Make a healthy dish to share so that you know there is at least ONE thing to eat that won’t pack on the empty calories. • Be mindful of portion sizes. For example, one portion of wings is usually 3-4, and one serving of queso dip is about two tablespoons. 4 Simple Snacks for Kids and Adults: • Popcorn: Cooked in a skillet with olive or coconut oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. “I’m hosting a total of six segments, and the first aired on December 16, 2023,” Susan explains. “It focused on the Town of Davidson, River Run Country Club and a gorgeous home also located in The Reserve at River Run. The show aired on WCCB CW, the CBS Charlotte affiliate and it can also be found on my YouTube channel and streaming services.” Real estate professionals on The American Dream serve as an authentic voice for their respective markets, and Susan enjoys that she has 100% creative control. “I can choose any topic, area or business to showcase, and I love to focus on local businesses, the owners and their unique stories,” she adds. “It brings a sense of a hometown feel to the area.” She’s also able to focus on a special real estate listing in the area where she’s highlighting a small business. “It’s a great way to introduce a home that’s for sale to the world, in addition to my other marketing, and everyone knows someone who is looking to either relocate to the area, buy a new home or sell their current home. “Susan is an amazing realtor to work with, as she goes above and beyond, taking all of your needs into consideration. Buying and selling a home can be a stressful experience, but having her as a realtor made the process seem easy.” - D A N I E L L E M . February 2024 | 29

SUSAN DOLAN

B U I LT O N I N S P I R AT I O N Susan’s own experience with relocation piqued her interest in building a career of helping others through similar times. Whether they are buying or selling a home, moving to a brand new state or simply a different neighborhood, her level of efficiency is the same. “I want to make the buying or selling process as seamless as possible, have fun and be able to act quickly and efficiently for my clients,” says Susan. “My goal is concierge service, which includes helping clients with paint colors for their new home.” As an art major with a concentration in photography at Eastern Michigan University, Susan fell in love with historic homes and architecture early on. She also excels in color theory – with an understanding of the entire color wheel and how various shades blend, and applying that in-depth expertise to every project. Susan and her family have called North Carolina home for 14 years, after living all over the U.S., from Maryland to California. The

beauty of Lake Norman was definitely an attraction. Having grown up in Michigan on Lake Erie means Susan knows lake life well. “I grew up a lover of the water and all the fun that comes with boating and watersports. When we relocated to the Metro Charlotte area, Lake Norman was a natural choice when deciding where to raise our family. We chose Denver because it was slightly off the beaten path. I feel Lake Norman offers everyone an amazing opportunity – whether you are moving here for a new career, to start a family or for your retirement years – the area has something for everyone.” Yes, Susan is a fan of pickleball, paddle-boarding and wake skiing during lake season – while otherwise, you can catch up with her juggling the career she loves, focusing on Charlotte, Cornelius, Davidson, Denver, Huntersville, Mooresville, Sherrills Ford, The Peninsula, The Point and Troutman areas – and also enjoying her newest role as TV host! CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

“Susan Dolan is the best realtor we have ever worked with. Extremely competent, knowledgeable and always goes the extra mile. Charming and lovely, too, and she gets the job done with a smile. Repeat business is the best way to say she’s wonderful at what she does!” - L I S A C . “I initially found Susan through a personal referral from out-of-state, and she was so wonderful with the purchasing process of my parents’ home that we scooped her up for ourselves. We had so much confidence in her expertise, especially in a market completely new to us, and it was evident that she had only our best interest at heart. We are so thankful we had her on our side!” - E L L E N M .

A CONVERSATION WITH OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST AND MOORESVILLE RESIDENT DAN JANSEN I am with Olympic speed skating gold medalist Dan Jansen. Dan’s story is truly remarkable – filled with the highest of highs and devastating lows. Through it all, he never gave up. Dan chose to embrace his setbacks head-on, ultimately achieving his Olympic dream. In addition to his world record-setting win in the 1994 1,000-meter race, Dan won seven World Cup titles and two world sprint championships. Born and raised in Wisconsin, he has called the Lake Norman area his home for the past 23 years. I recently caught up with Dan, and we discussed what he’s been doing since hanging up his skates.

by M AT T D O H E R T Y

T H E C O A C H ’ S C O R N E R W I T H M AT T D O H E R T Y M AT T : Dan, it’s great to see you! We first met about four years ago at your annual celebrity golf outing, the Dan Jansen Celebrity Classic golf tournament benefiting the Dan Jansen Foundation and the Cool Kids Campaign. These organizations assist families whose children have cancer. You created the foundation not long after your Olympic victory in honor of your sister, Jane, who died from Leukemia. How has the work of the foundation changed over the last 28 years? D A N : When I started the Dan Jansen Foundation, I wasn’t sure where I wanted the funds to go. I just knew I wanted to do something to give back in Jane’s memory. So, we started by giving grants for medical studies and similar needs. I never had a real sense of exactly where the money was going, and I didn’t see tangible results. Over time, we identified causes that were a better fit. Now, most of the money goes to our Family Aid Fund where we help families affected by cancer with nonmedical expenses. Many parents must stop working while their child is being treated, and they run into financial difficulties just trying to pay their everyday household expenses such as gas and electric bills, transportation expenses, rent or mortgages, etc. We also continue to help my sport of speed skating with financial assistance to both the elite skaters attempting to reach their Olympic dreams and the kids of today with future Olympic dreams. M AT T : How has the work of the foundation helped you cope with the loss of your sister at such a young age? Are there any moments over the years that stand out most? D A N : It is a constant part of my life. We receive letters and applications for funding weekly. Some of the hardships these families go through are terrible. The fact that we can help ease their burden just a little bit makes me think of Jane every day and realize that, without her passing, I probably would have never started

something like this. I’m certain she would be very happy to know that her tragic passing resulted in something positive. M AT T : How did a kid who grew up spending his free time in the ice rink end up settling down in Mooresville where we rarely see more than an inch or two of snowfall? Do you ever miss the snow? D A N : I have two daughters, Jane (30) and Olivia (28). When they were very young, their mother and I divorced. She is from the Carolinas, so she moved back here from Wisconsin. It was important to me to be involved in my daughters’ lives as much as possible, so I moved down here as well. My wife, Karen, and I have been married for 23 years. We enjoy Charlotte, and more specifically, the Lake Norman area. As for the snow, I don’t miss it! I usually take a ski trip once or twice a year, so I get my fill of snow and the cold then.

Eventually, I realized that I’m happiest when I combine my personal and professional passions to help others. If I didn’t need the money to live, I would do my job for free…and not many people can say that! What keeps me motivated is my health and wellness, as well as seeing the progress, growth and learning of the people I work with. M AT T : Aside from your sister, who have been the most influential people in your life and why? D A N : My family without a doubt. I’m the youngest of nine children. Starting with my parents, who taught me by example what honesty, hard work and integrity are. My brothers and sisters carried that right down the line. I also can’t forget about some coaches and teammates that I had in my career. And now, my wife and daughters inspire me every day! M AT T : Do you have a New Year’s resolution?

M AT T : In addition to your work with the foundation, you are a motivational speaker and personal trainer for some notable local folks. What keeps you motivated? D A N : The speaking started simply from demand. People and companies requested that I speak to their employees and share my story of perseverance, getting through difficult times, never giving up, etc. I have enjoyed that through the years, although it has slowed considerably since Covid. The training is simply my passion. I was in the medical device business for many years but always stayed fit, and I also trained other athletes and teams.

D A N : I’ve never needed motivation for exercising every day, so that’s never been a resolution. But here’s one for this year: I’m trying to get better at speaking Spanish! My wife, Karen, is of Mexican descent and speaks fluent Spanish. I can get by pretty well in both German and French from my skating days, but for some reason, I never really learned Spanish well enough to have a conversation. So, I’m trying to do that this year! M AT T : What do you want to be best remembered for? D A N : I think just for someone who did his very best in life, treated others well, helped others less fortunate than myself. Also, for being a good father, husband and friend. M AT T : How can people support your foundation? D A N : The easiest way is probably through our website at djfoundation.org. Thank you, Matt. I appreciate your support!

MOTHER NURTURE

INVESTING IN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THAT L AST A LIFETIME by I V E Y G A S K I N B A K E R

The first step in starting a business is to understand your purpose. Whom will you serve? At the end of the day, someone needs to pay you for your product. Ideally both parties, both you and your consumer, will benefit from what you have to offer. What you’re paid should eventually cover your time and costs. Our business is a bit unique in that I have another end user in mind, my sons. In addition to selling to local florists, farmer’s markets and to our community, this business will serve my children’s growth and development. However, I need to cover my expenses, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) doesn’t really care if my kids become productive human beings because of their mom’s idyllic gardening visions. This isn’t a hobby. We need to make money.

I begin with a plan. We will grow fruit and vegetables, however, my focus for our business is flowers, for a few reasons. We will primarily be using our front yard to expand our garden, and I feel our neighbors will be more accepting of the English garden look rather than countless rows of raised beds filled with tomato cages and string bean trellises. It is also true that flowers have a higher profit margin than produce. *Remember, we need to make money.* And lastly, strategic partnerships between my sons and local florists that can be managed any day of the week is more sustainable than attending farmer’s markets every Saturday morning during our busy summers. I have vegetable seeds galore, but for those reasons, we will sell flowers. Charlotte, North Carolina falls into Zone 7b and 8a of the USDA Hardiness scale, meaning that we are a rather forgiving and temperate client, rarely reaching temperatures below zero and 10 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to climate, soil, water and sun are the most important components of gardening success. Our lot is a flat, grassy front yard with a few larger trees but drenched in morning and early afternoon sun. Our backyard is an old established yard with existing shrubs and floral beds. There will be a lot of work to do to get the yard ready for all the new flowers that will fill it. There is ample sun, but the current soil needs a lot of work and attention. We will be bringing a truckload of soil into the yard to fill existing beds and new raised ones. We will also need to weave yards and yards of irrigation drip hoses to keep everything watered and fed on hot summer days. There is outdoor work to be done and indoor seed planting starts now. So, are you curious about what we’re growing? Snapdragons will join our established hydrangeas, tulips and lilies, scattered around the yard. Zinnias, marigolds and lavender will surround our raised beds filled with strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, squash, herbs, beans and peas. These flowers (theoretically) provide a beautiful barrier between the produce and nuisance bugs while attracting pollinators with their bright blooms. The garden will be bordered with beautiful, tall (poisonous) delphiniums to ward off deer and rabbits. Diverse bouquet fillers like lacy white finch, bells of Ireland, Matricaria (German Chamomile), celosia and edible flowers will fill the nooks and crannies of our garden. Our big investments this year will be in peony, dahlia and ranunculus perennials. These are the flowers that intimidate me and the ones I’m most excited to get into the ground as they fill the bouquet of many bright eyed and dreamy brides, myself included. My own seasoned gardener mother has lovingly said “good luck” on some of my plans which gives me that butterflies-in-the-stomach kind of nervousness. I like that feeling.

YOUR RETIREMENT STYLE “QUARTERLY REVIEW” by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N

WHO DOESN’T REMEMBER SITTING DOWN WITH THE BOSS MAN, OR EVEN THE BOSS LADY, FOR YOUR “ANNUAL REVIEW?” IT WAS A BIG DEAL – GOING OVER THE RESULTS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND “MISSED OPPORTUNITIES” – OF THE PRECEDING 12 MONTHS. It meant being evaluated for your performance and your contribution. And, it usually included a “big reveal” – how all of that would show up in your next paycheck. You may have had a small voice in the process – except for the money part which was usually left to the boss’ discretion and some impersonal guidelines handed down from the ivory tower.

week for 20 minutes.” It’s the same with a goal such as reading. Instead of saying “I want to read more literary fiction,” I say “Read three classics this winter. First up: Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. Choose two more. Austen?” You get the idea.

I never imagined that this annual workplace ritual would confer invaluable lessons about navigating and reflecting on my retirement life. Back then, tracking my activities and “wins” kept me focused on our shared mission and goals and uberintentional about how I spent my time. These days, my definition of “performance and accomplishment” looks so much different. And yet, what remains the same is that my intentions always provide direction for how I spend my time and how I live my life in the here and now.

The beauty of capturing your seasonal intentions is that you can modify them at any time. You’re the boss, remember? There are no “rules” here. The idea is to live more intentionally and to gain insight from what you experience in doing so. Which leads us to:

Replace the Annual Review with a Quarterly Plan and Reflection We sometimes don’t recall what we did 12 minutes ago, much less 12 months ago! If we wait an entire calendar year to reflect and review, we are likely to miss a lot. Instead, I’ve begun to take a more manageable seasonal approach: • In the winter, I set my intentions for spring. • In the spring, I set my intentions for summer. • In the summer, I set my intentions for fall. • In the fall, I set my intentions for winter. Ground It Somewhere Dedicate a notebook, journal or Word document for your quarterly planning and reflection. Use the turn of each season to reflect on the one that has just passed and to plan for the season ahead. Personalize Your Categories In the workplace, you were told what you were responsible for. At this point, YOU’RE THE BOSS. Start with that blank slate and choose what matters to you. Your categories might include: Health, Travel, Activities to Explore, House Projects, This Year’s Garden, Books to Read and so on. The point is to identify what you want to be intentional and somewhat “planful” about. A cautionary note: less is more. If you are too ambitious, you may feel overwhelmed and scrap the whole idea. Start small, try it out and see where it takes you. Identify Your Specifics We all know that a goal such as “walk more often” is a nice intention that doesn’t translate into action. Instead, you might say “This spring, I am going to walk at least three days each

Keep It Fluid

Remember, This Isn’t A Checklist To hone in on what matters to you now, be sure to ask the questions that matter. For planning the season ahead, you might ask: • What home improvement project would give me the greatest satisfaction? • What specific changes do I want to make to my lifestyle right now? • How can I expand my circle with people my age? • What two bucket list items can I start planning so that they happen? For reflection, consider: • What discoveries did I make about myself? • What inspired me? • How did I embrace the season? • What lessons can I move forward with and how? No, this approach won’t get you a raise as it did in the old days, but it will help you plan and reflect your way toward a more intentional retirement – season by season.

T H E T R A I T S O F A G R E AT L E A D E R by L E S L I E S P E A S Leadership involves influencing, supporting, inspiring, and creating opportunities for others. It is an important skill for all of us to cultivate, regardless of our role in the workplace. We are all leaders in some facet of our lives – our homes, our workplaces, our churches and our communities to name a few. I conduct leadership classes regularly as part of my career as a Human Resources Consultant. It occurred to me that the principles that I share apply in other areas of our lives outside of work as well. As a result, I wanted to share what I believe to be some of the most important aspects of leadership. Let’s start with what NOT to do as a leader. This list certainly isn’t all-inclusive, but these are examples of behaviors that you should avoid. • • • •

Disrespecting others Breaking promises Having unrealistic expectations Gossiping

Criticizing instead of coaching Playing favorites Micromanaging Being arrogant

Show respect. According to Harvard Business Review, the leadership trait most important to employees in the workplace is respect. I think this holds true for leadership in other areas of our lives as well. Everyone wants and deserves to be treated with respect! Manage yourself and your emotions. If you can’t manage yourself, you aren’t going to be able to effectively lead anyone else. You need to be able to maintain your composure and self-control when things get difficult or stressful. Demonstrate integrity. Integrity connotes a deep commitment to doing the right thing for the right reason, regardless of the circumstances. This involves being honest, keeping confidences, and doing what you say you will do.

Trust and empower others. Extend trust to others and empower them to make decisions and do their jobs. No one enjoys being micro-managed. And guess what? This can even apply to parenting. Show humility. Showing humility is a very important leadership trait. Contrary to popular belief, humility is not the same thing as showing weakness. Humility involves minimizing status differences, seeking input, listening, admitting mistakes, and putting others’ interests before your own. Lead with love. You can lead with love by showing others that you care about them by showing empathy, compassion, and creating an environment where they feel safe. Further, leading with love involves regularly demonstrating appreciation and lifting others up. Be a good coach. Various workplace studies have found that the best managers are good coaches. This involves providing feedback in a caring and motivational way; listening to others; and guiding them toward decisions. I believe these principles can be beneficial in leading outside of work as well. Communicate relentlessly. Communication is critical to leading in any area of life. This involves communicating information thoughts and ideas clearly and frequently; keeping your communication simple, open, and honest; and sharing information freely. Practice accountability. This involves being accountable for your own performance and behavior and holding others accountable for theirs. You can do this by setting the example; communicating clear expectations; being fair and consistent; and not showing favoritism.

SOIL REGENER ATION

WITH BIOCHAR by P E T E R H E N R I K S O N There has been a buzz about soil regeneration agriculture. Our ability to maintain or improve the soils that feed the world is critical to our sustainability, yet this approach is rarely discussed in the lawn and landscape world. I believe this is a mistake, and soil regeneration should be central to our conversation. When we step back and think about our homesite, it is a mini farm. We grow a mono-culture plant species on our lawns similar to how corn, soybeans or other cash crops are grown. We also grow an array of other species of plants and ornamentals that work together to build a micro ecosystem. For perspective, this means that in the Charlotte metro area, we have more than 1 million micro farms working to improve our air and water quality every day of the year.

our plants when amended correctly with organic material. One of the most beneficial amendments to heavy clay soil is biochar.

The goal of soil regeneration is to build soil structure that contains the right balance of dirt, organic material, biology (bacteria, fungi, etc) and texture to improve the efficiency of the soil for the benefit of the plants that rely on that. In the southeast, we have about 50% of what is needed for healthy soils. Our heavy clays have the potential to retain a massive amount of nutrients for

Lawn care product manufacturers have created some incredible products for our market which contain both biochar and compost. These products are applied by top-dressing, or spreading, the product on top of the soil and allowing the products to work into the soil. These products can be spread using a fertilizer spreader or by hand if you do not have equipment available. One of our favorite products is built by Mirimichi

40 | lkn-magazine.com

The usage of biochar dates back to more than 2,000 years ago in the Amazon basin. The amended soil was referred to as Terra Preta, or “black soil,” in Portuguese. The ancient civilization learned how to produce biochar by burning organic waste materials in a low oxygen environment, which forces the material to retain its high carbon content instead of releasing it into the air. Biochar has many advantages including an extremely high carbon content, and its physical properties help build an efficient soil structure for air, water and nutrient utilization by plants. Biochar has many similarities to compost, but they are not equivalents.

Green, a local North Carolina company. Their products, Carbon Pro-G and Essential-G, are available at your local SiteOne retailer for purchase by the DIYer. These two exceptional products combine a perfect combination of biochar and compost, as well as a microbial inoculation which is an excellent source of beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi for your lawn. In one product, your lawn receives the high carbon content of biochar, the organic material of compost for soil structure and the needed biology to continue to build porosity for better nutrient cycling. These components are the missing pieces to make our heavy clays into high performing soil. At GrassRoots, we use these products to build soil quality by improving soil pH, nutrient uptake and soil biology, while reducing the salinity of the soil caused by historical overuse of granular fertilizers. These products are beneficial additions to your lawn year-round, but we find the results to be even better when we can incorporate them into the soil during our fall core aeration and seeding program. Once incorporated, we have effectively changed the soil composition of our heavy clays at the root zone, where nutrient cycling takes place. Improving the soil has allowed our customers to go several years between aeration and overseeding because 1) the soil has porosity and fights compaction; 2) the root depth of the existing grass grows thicker and deeper allowing it to thrive during the hot summer months; and 3) the lawn is healthier and repairs itself while not showing the signs of normal wear. Our goal is to build the very best lawns for our GrassRoots customers. We combine the best products with the most effective approaches based on agronomic principles, while being mindful of our environmental footprint. If you are looking to improve your turf health year-round, call us and let us show you the many benefits of adding biochar to your lawn!

It doesn’t always have to be profound, but it could be something that helps me be my best, such as resting and rejuvenating.” Nicole says she’s also inspired when witnessing the personal growth of others and knowing she’s guided clients to finding personal peace. “For myself, I have check-ins throughout the week that might include taking a moment to assess my emotional state, stress level and energy level,” said Nicole. “This helps me remove self-doubt, feeling overwhelmed and negative self-talk or indecisiveness that’s taking place in my life.” Those moments can be as simple as riding in the car with no music, lying across the bed with no TV, sitting on the back deck or going for a walk. “One helpful thing I do is ‘brain dumps’ before bed. Grab your notebook and ‘dump the day’ by including accomplishments, tasks you still need to do, things that stressed you or just your random thoughts. It’s an excellent way to clear your mind and have a good night’s sleep!” As for her own time in the corporate world, Nicole said she was stressed because she didn’t have clarity on goals or next steps.

“I wasn’t inspired, committed or engaged. I worked hard and set myself up to leave the corporate world because I realized I had ‘gems and nuggets’ to share with people,” she said, with a nod to her first best-selling book, 20 Golden Leadership Nuggets. “I knew I had what it took to run my own business and help others but didn’t know where to start. “What inspires me daily is that I have 24 more Hint: The first step and key to success is the journey of gaining self-awareness!” hours to make a difference, whether it’s for With her love of speaking, Nicole has designed, hosted and facilitated educational events, conferences, workshops and seminars all over the globe. HEART DISEASE: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR FAMILY HISTORY AND HOW TO BEST PROTECT YOURSELF by K A R E N C O O P E R In a month where matters of the heart are front and center, it also makes sense to take a look at the health of your heart and how to best keep yourself well. One important thing to consider where heart health is concerned is family history. If one of your parents or grandparents or siblings had a stroke, a heart attack, or other heart issues, this may put you at a higher risk. Considering Heart Disease and Stroke are the Number 1 and Number 5 causes of death in America, it’s best to be informed about your risk factors and how to avoid them. It is not a given that you will follow in the path of your family members; rather, it is always good to be on the safe side where matters of the heart are concerned…so stay optimistic, but proceed with caution. If you have risks due to family history, the most important thing you can do is fight against your genetics and change the behaviors that make up your increased risk. That includes looking at eating habits, physical fitness, and eliminating smoking. This includes vaping as well. You are especially at risk if a family member had a history of heart disease before age 55 for men or 65 for women. If that is the case, it is prudent to see a cardiologist sooner rather than later, who can help weigh all your risk factors and put together a treatment plan if necessary. There is also the chance you may be at a higher risk even if there is no family history of heart problems. There are statistics to show that 1 in 3 Hispanics may have high blood pressure and 1 in 2 will also be facing high cholesterol. For African Americans, statistics show that the risk for high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke is also higher. A 2016 article published in the New England Journal of Medicine confirmed that having “unlucky” genetics can double your risk of heart disease. This study also found that a healthful lifestyle was more important than genetics in determining overall risk for heart disease. In the study, people with the highest genetic predisposition for heart disease were able to cut their risk of cardiovascular disease in half through simple healthy lifestyle modifications.

L I F E S T Y L E M O D I F I C AT I O N S I N C L U D E : Stopping smoking – Smoking is a major risk factor for developing atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries). It also causes the majority of cases of coronary thrombosis (the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel of the heart. This blood clot may then restrict blood flow within the heart, leading to heart tissue damage, or a myocardial infarction, also known as a heart attack) in people under the age of 50. Limiting alcohol – Drinking no alcohol is perfectly healthy. The benefits of drinking small amounts for the “health of your heart” are not fully backed by science. If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to no more than: two drinks a day most days, to a weekly maximum of 10 for women or three drinks a day most days, to a weekly maximum of 15 for men. Eating well and exercising – Combining a healthy diet with regular exercise is the best way to maintain a healthy weight. Having a healthy weight reduces your chances of developing high blood pressure. Check your blood pressure and cholesterol regularly and if you find the numbers are not in the range they should be, work with your doctor on a treatment plan. According to the National Institutes of Health, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes and prediabetes, smoking, obesity or being overweight, physical inactivity, having a history of preeclampsia during pregnancy, an unhealthy diet and increasing age all raise your risk of heart disease. Addressing any or all of these risk factors can help minimize your risk of heart disease. Pay attention to your heart and the hearts of the ones you love! With a little extra attention to cardiovascular health, you can set yourself on a path to wellness for many years to come! Celebrate your heart and the hearts of those you love this February for Valentine’s Day. A N SWE RING YOUR K I DS’ TOUG HEST MONEY QUESTION S by J O N M A R Z A N O , A I F ® , M A N A G I N G P R I N C I P A L Kids ask tough questions about money. It’s how they learn. As a parent, these are teachable moments that offer a chance to impart some financial wisdom to them. Start by asking them questions for clarification. After all, “Why does a lawyer always answer a question with a question?” Answer: “Why shouldn’t a lawyer answer a question with a question?” While you want to be forthright with them, you both learn more by asking questions. This gives you perspective on why they are asking and helps them develop critical thinking abilities. Consider these types of clarifying questions: • Why do you ask? • What do you mean by that? • What does “rich” mean to you? • What do you think you’ll do for work when you get older? • How do your friends spend their money? Even with the best questions, you’ll still want to be prepared with some answers of your own. Think of answering honestly but age-appropriately. Here are some of the more common questions we hear: Are we rich? Explain that being “rich” means different things to different people and that you are very fortunate to have the resources that you do. This is also a great time to remind them that wealth is not the only indicator of happiness or success and that you value many other things in life such as relationships, experiences and personal growth. Can I have (expensive item)? Explain that even wealthy families have budgets and that not all expenses are justifiable. You can also use this as an opportunity to discuss the importance of making wise financial decisions and understanding the true value of money. How much money do you make? “None of your business” is a possible response, but not the appropriate one. Disclosing a number isn’t usually wise either. Explain that most adults don’t share how much money they make. Use this as an opportunity to talk to your child about the importance of a healthy relationship with money. Understanding its role in our lives can help them make wise decisions as they grow up. Why can’t we go on a big vacation like my friend’s family? Explain that different families have different priorities and financial situations. While it may not be possible to go on a big vacation at the moment, you can focus on making other fun memories and experiences together as a family.

“By having these conversations early and often, you can help your children develop healthy and positive relationships with money that will serve them well throughout their lives.”

How much does our house cost? It’s not necessary to disclose the specific cost of your home. You can explain that owning a home is an important investment and that you are working hard to make sure it’s a safe and comfortable place for your family to live. Can I have an allowance? If you decide to give your children an allowance, explain that it’s important to use it wisely and to save some of it for future goals. You can also talk about ways they can earn extra money by doing chores or other tasks around the house. What would happen if you lost your job? It’s important to reassure your child that even if a challenging situation were to arise, you would find a way to get through it together as a family. Additionally, it can be helpful to use this as an opportunity to teach your child about the importance of saving money and having an emergency fund, as well as the value of resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. Remember that the key to answering tough money questions is to be honest, open and sensitive to your children’s ages and maturity levels. By having these conversations early and often, you can help your children develop healthy and positive relationships with money that will serve them well throughout their lives.

CONSIDER SOME OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AND PROMPTS TO ASSIST YOU:

LEARNING MORE ABOUT YOURSELF THROUGH JOURNALING by M E G A N TAY L O R

Journaling can be defined as documenting your thoughts and feelings to better understand them and yourself. It is a way to clear your mind and help make sense of what is going on in your life - your happiness, relationships, challenges, confusion, etc. Most of the time, we only journaled when we were younger (think about writing in our diaries). However, reflecting on life’s happenings and writing them down can be beneficial no matter your age. Some of the positives to journaling include lowering stress, managing depression, and also anxiety. In addition, this process can improve your mood and help you overcome obstacles. Sometimes for me, it is helpful to write something out if it doesn’t make sense in my mind. This is one example of how, through journaling, you can gain control of your emotions and thoughts, providing you better clarity and a healthier lifestyle. One of the biggest benefits of journaling that is often overlooked is the value of self-discovery and learning more about yourself. By reflecting on questions and prompts, journaling gives a person a chance to go deeper and discover their true selves. You are able to write about your personality, likes, dislikes, values and beliefs, what works well, what you would like to change, etc.

• What are your favorite hobbies? • What do you like best about yourself? What is the biggest thing you would like to change about yourself? • What helps you relax? What makes you stressed? • What are your greatest fears and worries? How do you overcome those fears and worries? • What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? • What self-doubts do you have? • What do you want to accomplish? • What words would you tell your 18-year-old self? • What are you curious about and would like to learn? • How are you different from 10 years ago? • What can you let go of that no longer makes you happy? • What type of environment do you thrive in? • What resources do you need to be successful? How will you gain those resources? • What are your most important beliefs that you know to be true? • What does your life seem to lack? How can you change that? • What things or people inspire you and why? • What would you do if you were brave enough to do it? What is stopping you? • Do you make choices based on emotion or logic? • How do you feel about your profession? • Are you a conventional or unconventional person and in what ways? Think of it as getting to know yourself through writing. Keep in mind your answers should be honest and raw. Use the questions and prompts as a guide and let your thoughts flow without stopping. Only your eyes will be on the journal, so why not let it reflect who you truly are - the good, the bad, and the ugly. After all, the purpose of using a journal is to help you learn more and become a stronger person. Before you begin, first make sure you have a journal that you enjoy writing in. Do you want something pretty or functional? Do you want it personalized? Think about a design and format that will motivate you to write. Then, create a schedule and commit to it. Be realistic with yourself. Start small with your journaling time and then build up to larger chunks. This way you won’t get discouraged and stop the process. The key is consistency. Don’t be afraid to change the days of the week and time of the day you write. Do whatever works best for you to have the greatest impact and benefits of journaling. After deciding on the preliminaries, pick a few prompts and get started writing. Soon, journaling will become part of your daily routine, something you enjoy, and before you know it, you will have learned more about yourself. Happy journaling!

BAGS OF HOPE

FEEDING CHILDREN FOR LIFE & LEARNING by MARTIE EMORY From a weekend backpack ministry at Davidson United Methodist Church in 2012 to a similar project with Journey Church in 2017 and another program through Mosaic Church in 2018, combining efforts of love and generous hearts has multiplied the important outreach of Bags of Hope. An average of 650 students are currently being served at 30 local schools in the Lake Norman and greater Charlotte areas, each weekend of the school year. Now striving to serve 750 local students with food during the upcoming spring break holiday, Bags of Hope is relied on by more and more schools to reduce food insecurity within our community. “Bags of Hope receives funding through grants, as well as individual and corporate donations,” said Nicole Fiehler, program coordinator. “In addition, in-kind donations make up about 50% of the food used in our backpacks, while the remaining 50% is purchased from a few local grocery stores and our partner, Second Harvest Food Bank.” Bags of Hope relies directly on school contacts – often guidance counselors or social workers – to identify students who would benefit from the program. Although a student may receive free or reduced lunch on school days, their families may struggle on those days away from school.

“The need in our community is great, and what I find most inspiring about the “Once a parent signs a permission form, students begin receiving work at Bags of Hope is a backpack of food each weekend of the school year,” said Nicole. “In many cases, we serve multiple students in one household, and the way neighbors in the we also serve students with food allergies.” community show up to provide hope and food for When bags are packed and ready, volunteers deliver to schools, where contacts place them in backpacks for students to take families in need.” home on Friday afternoon and return on Monday morning. “The backpacks are not labeled with the student’s name or ‘Bags of Hope,’ so the process is as discreet as possible,” said Nicole. “The goal is for students to return to school on Monday well-fed, wellrested and ready to learn!

NICOLE FIEHLER, P R O G R A M C O O R D I N AT O R

With March comes spring break, and a reminder that Bags of Hope also provides larger bags of food over extended school breaks, which includes Thanksgiving and winter break. These larger bags contain 21 meals, several side items and snacks, plus a $20 grocery store gift card (most often Food Lion.) “With a goal of sending home 750 bags during this break, we need help from the entire community,” said Nicole. What a perfect opportunity for families, individuals, sports teams, offices and service clubs to shop together for specific items, pack them in reusable grocery bags and drop off at the Bags of Hope warehouse located at 10308 Bailey Road,

Suite 413, in Cornelius – on March 16th from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Please check the website (BagsofHopeLKN.com) or the group’s social media pages for a complete list of food items to be included! Without the support of generous individuals, groups and businesses from around the community, none of these efforts could be accomplished. “The need in our community is great, and what I find most inspiring about the work at Bags of Hope is the way neighbors in the community show up to provide hope and food for families in need,” said Nicole. “By volunteering to pack bags, donating or organizing food drives throughout the year, this steady dedication to our mission

has allowed us to never turn away a new student in need!” Please visit BagsofHopeLKN.com for a list of specific requested food items, and mark your family’s calendar to drop off food the morning of March 16th. VA L E N T I N E ’ S DAY SURF N’ TURF by TA N N E R J O H N S O N

For February, I thought I would showcase a Valentine’s Day classic – surf and turf! This will be a meal that will surely impress your significant other and be the perfect way to celebrate the day. This is an elegant meal that you can make at home for about a quarter the cost of going to an expensive steakhouse that you may have forgotten to get reservations for a couple of months in advance. Ingredients: • Two 6-8 oz filet mignon steaks • Two 4-5 oz lobster tails • S&P or steak seasoning of choice • ¼ stick of butter (for lobster) • Fresh parsley (or dried) • Cajun seasoning (optional) Instructions: 1. First, you’ll season the steak however you like – just salt and pepper is fine; but if you really want some great flavor, Hardcore Carnivore “BLACK” seasoning is amazing on a filet. 2. I always prefer reverse searing the filets. I do this by cooking in the smoker at 225 degrees until an internal temperature of 110 degrees, then searing them on a cast iron pan or a hot grill until and internal temperature of 130 degrees. But, you can also grill them to desired temperature or cook them in a skillet from start to finish. 3. After the steaks get to 110 degrees (for medium rare), bring them to 120 degrees (if you want more of a medium/well), pull them out, then crank the smoker/grill or oven to 350 degrees for the lobster tails.

shell, slide a spoon underneath to separate the shell from the lobster meat and pull the lobster meat up through the shell, leaving the very end of the tail inside the shell to keep everything connected. 5. Brush the lobster with a little melted butter, and season with a small amount of salt. 6. Throw the lobster tails in, and you’ll keep cooking them until you get to 140 degrees internal temperature. About halfway through, you’ll want to baste the lobster tails with the ¼ stick of butter melted and combined with some cracked black pepper, Cajun seasoning and fresh parsley. You can also just put plain melted butter on the lobster if you prefer that. While the lobster is cooking, you’ll want to sear the steaks to get them up to that final preferred temperature. 7. Plate it all up with maybe a twice baked potato or any kind of carbs that you prefer – you may not even need an additional side!

4. Use some kitchen shears to cut a slit down the length of the lobster

LIFE ACCORDING TO TED LASSO by M E G A N TAY L O R Since 2020, the Apple TV+ show, Ted Lasso, has taken audiences by storm. This series follows an American football coach, Ted Lasso, as he is hired to manage a British soccer team, AFC Richmond. Lasso is from Kansas and brings determination and optimism to the new team to help make up for his lack of knowledge in the sport. In addition, he is known for his legendary quotes, dad jokes and sense of humor. Together with a team, new friends and colleagues, Ted Lasso wins everyone over and brings the team to success. The show streamed for three years, ending in 2023. During those years, its popularity and fan love grew. Out of the episodes came inspiring stories, human connections, lots of laughter and heartfelt quotes. Many of these quotes, directly from Ted Lasso himself, have helped viewers make their lives just a little bit easier and a little bit wiser. Below, I have compiled a list of the 26 best quotes by Ted Lasso. Hopefully, these motivating messages will help you as you go through the day. I present to you life, according to Ted Lasso and his friends. AS SAID BY TED L ASSO:

“She’s got some fences, alright, but you just gotta hop over ‘em.”

“It’s funny to think about the things in your life that can make you cry just knowing that they existed, can then become the same thing that “Fairy tales do not start nor do they end in the dark forest, that son make you cry knowing that they’re now gone. I think those things come into our lives to help us get from one place to a better one.” of a gun always shows up smack-dab in the middle of a story. But, it will all work out. Now, it may not work out how you think it will or “I’m a work in progmess.” how you hope it does, but believe me, it will all work out exactly as it’s supposed to. Our job is to have zero expectations and just let go. “Just listen to your gut, and on the way, down to your gut, check “Be curious, not judgmental.”

“Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re in with your heart. Between those two things, they’ll let you know what’s what.” comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.” “As the man once said, the harder you work, the luckier you get.”

AS S A I D BY OT H E R C H A R AC T E R S I N T H E S E R I E S :

“I hope that either all of us or none of us are judged by the actions of our weakest moments, but rather by the strength we show when and if we’re ever given a second chance.”

“I lost my way for a minute, but I’m on the road back.” ~ Rebecca Welton

“You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. You know why? It’s got a 10-second memory.”

“I know we can’t fix every ache inside of us. But I shouldn’t have to pretend it’s not there either.” ~ Colin Hughes

“Most of the time, change is a good thing. Now, I think that’s what “Change isn’t about trying to be perfect. Perfection sucks. Perfect is boring.” ~ Coach Beard it’s all about. Embracing change. Being brave. Doing whatever you have to so that everyone in your life can move forward with “Every disadvantage has its advantage.” ~ Rebecca Welton theirs.” “If the internet has taught us anything, it’s that sometimes it’s easier to speak our minds anonymously.” “I feel like we fell out of the lucky tree and hit every branch on the way down, ending up in a pool of cash and Sour Patch Kids.” “If you care about someone, and you got a little love in your heart, there ain’t nothing you can’t get through together.”

“Don’t you dare settle for fine.” ~ Roy Kent “Human beings are never gonna be perfect, Roy. The best we can do is to keep asking for help and accepting it when you can. And, if you keep on doing that, you’ll always be moving towards better.” ~ Leslie Higgins

This is just a handful of the memorable quotes from the series “Your body is like day-old rice. If it ain’t warmed up properly, and, trust me, it was hard to pick the best. The words are full of advice and inspiration that can apply to anyone. As Trent Crimm, something real bad could happen.” a reporter on the show once said, “if the Lasso way is wrong, it’s “For me, success is not about the wins and losses. It’s about hard to imagine being right.” helping these young fellas be the best versions of themselves on and off the field.” “You know how they say that youth is wasted on the young? Well, I say don’t let the wisdom of age be wasted on you.” “Living in the moment is a gift. That’s why they call it the present.” “There’s two buttons I never like to hit: that’s panic and snooze.” “I disagree with the phrase ‘it’s hope that kills you.’ I think it’s lack of hope that comes and gets ya. I believe in hope. I believe in believe. Where I’m from, we’ve got a saying, a question actually. Do you believe in miracles?”

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE

JOY-BATH by CHARLIE SCHULER

W E H A D A N E W 3 4 ’ O DAY, S LO O P R I GG E D S A I L B OAT, N A M E D S E AG U L L I I . W E S A I L E D E V E RY C H A N C E W E GOT. We had a new 34’ O Day, sloop rigged sailboat, named SEAGULL II. We sailed every chance we got. Sometimes we sailed 100 miles out in the ocean to see if we could get back to the same spot we started from. Every weekend found us on the water somewhere. We enjoyed anchoring out for the evening. The moon and stars can be truly appreciated in the complete darkness of the night. Our boat was moored on a buoy at the Raritan Yacht Club (RYC) in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. RYC is on the Raritan River just down from the Verrazano Bridge. The New York Yacht Club is the oldest continuously operating yacht club in the country; Raritan Yacht Club is the second. RYC provided a launch and driver to take us out to our boat. This service properly introduced our guests to boating. They met at the Yacht Club, boarded the launch and motored among a large fleet of sailboats on their way out to ours. While we were enjoying the evening at the buoy, we

got an idea. Why don’t we start a chartering service where we could take one or two people on our boat for a weekend cruise? We had all the tools to make it work beautifully. A well-equipped sailboat, a dingy (a small boat kept on the larger vessel) and a sixpack license from the United States Coast Guard (USCG). I had passed many of the courses that the United States Power Squadron, now known as America’s Boating Club (ABC), had offered, as well as the USCG Captain’s test. The ABC courses included Safety, Basic Seamanship, Piloting (which included chart reading and plotting), Marine Electronics, Weather and Engine Maintenance. The requirements for the USCG include one year on the water, documented within the last five years. They had multiple questions as well as plotting a course on the chart using LORAN waypoints. After passing all of this, I earned a six-pack license, which meant that I could charter and charge up to six people on the water.

This was essentially what we needed to get started. A few details did remain, like insurance, advertising and food. We decided that Marianne could cook them a veal marsala dinner, muffins, bagels, fruit and coffee for breakfast, and snacks for whenever. Our goal was to make the graduates have a fun weekend and be comfortable to charter their own vessel. The plan was that we would have them plot a course to Sandy Hook Cove, show them how to raise the sails and control the boat, then find a spot to spend the night. This would include lowering and setting the anchor after determining how much rode they would let out. Rode is the length of line between the anchor and the boat. The minimum is normally three times the depth. Five times is normal. So, if you are in 10’ of water, you would let out 50’ of rode. You set the anchor by putting the engine in reverse and pulling the anchor into the bottom. Then, you check your position. Now they could lower the dingy and go ashore. We would explore some and then return to the boat. Getting on and off from the dingy was an act. After a fun day of work and play, it is always nice to take a shower. True, the SEAGULL II had all the amenities – ice box, stove, head (toilet), shower, dining table, bunks and so on. But, it had a limited supply of water.

So, I explained to them that we would take a JOY-Bath. It was at this point that all the guests started to look at me differently. I had to explain that this was an accepted technique used by cruisers all over. The way it works is that you jump into the salt water, come back on board and clean yourself using JOY soap. Then, jump back into the salt water, rinse the soap off, climb out and immediately dry yourself. No salt on you. Guaranteed it works. Our trip back to RYC was always a joy. We showed them how to properly pick up the lines from the mooring, secure the vessel and call the launch. Safely home again. As a side note, after cruising many years, Marianne went to the hairdresser, and she said Marianne’s hair was beautiful. She asked what she was doing to it. Marianne said washing it in JOY soap and salt water. This blew them away. I eventually earned my Master’s License from the USCG in both sail and power vessels. This is unusual, since most only get this license in power. February 2024 | 63

PREPARE TO BE SURPRISED by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N I look forward to meeting new people, discovering shared interests and establishing meaningful connections in the months ahead. At the same time, I find myself reflecting deeply on the delightful, and somewhat surprising, whirlwind of reconnection that happened in my home during the past holiday season.

tears and felt as connected as ever to my former work community. Shortly thereafter, I was on a Zoom call with a handful of my fellow mourners, grieving as a community and celebrating the life and legacy of a man we dearly loved. This sad “prompt” led to more calls and more conversations that strengthened the ties that bind us.

Get Ready to Be Surprised It’s the person you least expect who elopes unexpectedly in Vegas, who gets an in-yourface tattoo or who converts to a different religion. Remember, you haven’t walked every step of their journey with them, so chill out and catch up on who they are and where they are in their being right now. Remind Yourself That We “Remember” Things Differently As you reminisce about the past, your recollections and especially your interpretations may differ considerably. Explore that, seek to understand, but steer clear of trying to be “right” because it serves no purpose at this point! Focus On the Good Stuff Everyone needs to know that the people who care about them are happy for them. Listen for what’s gone well for your friend, share her enthusiasm and be happy for her! I heard lots of good stuff on my calls – a first grandchild, a son’s PhD, a journey to grace. I appreciated the dopamine surge I experienced based on my friends’ good news.

While my husband, Dean, was downstairs scouring old contact information and making phone calls, I was texting friends around the country: Hey, thinking of you and hope all is well. Wanna set up a call? We filled many hours – he downstairs, and me on the main level – catching up with old friends, and then regrouping over dinner to exchange details about people who have a place in our histories and our memories. What we heard ran the gamut from the sublime – you bought another boat? – to the tragic – I am so very sorry to hear – with a hefty dose of the mundane – oh, the dreaded root canal – to balance the extremes. These conversations were incredibly energizing! So much laughter, some gossip and a few shared tears. It was during this whirlwind of reconnection that a coworker emailed to let me know that a beloved former boss had passed away from ALS. I “attended” the church service virtually, shed a river of

66 | lkn-magazine.com

Reconnecting with an old friend is unique because it lacks the continuity of contact, the unfolding story that a “steady” friendship offers. Here’s what I’ve gleaned from my recent immersion in reconnection: Beware of the Fixed Construct Just as you have undoubtedly changed since you last connected, so have they. While the core of who we are generally stays the same, our experiences and our choices continue to shape us throughout our lifetime. I know that my former coworkers were a bit confused by how “emotional” I was on our call; just as I was perplexed by the atypical candor of another coworker. The point is to be aware that you are remembering them as they were, just as they are remembering you as you were. The key to your reality check is to create some space by paying attention, listening and steering clear of expecting them to be exactly the same person you used to know.

Encourage Them on Their Terms If the conversation includes shared vulnerabilities, be supportive – just as you would want her to be for you, but watch any tendency to give unsolicited advice. Instead, listen for what she needs and follow her lead. If You Need to Apologize, Then Do So If there’s “baggage” from the past that you feel badly about, there is no time like now to say “I’m sorry for….”

STOP FOLDING YOUR UNDERWEAR AND OTHER IDEAS TO REDUCE DAILY STRESS by LAURA CZERWINSKI How many times have you been told that it would be a good idea to lower your stress? Typically, those words are coming out of the mouths of your doctors, spouse or a good friend.

Now, after hearing this piece of advice, how many times have you thought to yourself “easier said than done?” I’m guessing it’s been more than a dozen times. We’ve all heard a plethora of ways to reduce stress. A relaxing bath, a massage, “me time” with a good book and even the newer “Netflix and chill” therapy. These are all great ideas but not always convenient to implement on a regular basis to possibly help you bring your stress levels down a notch or two on a more long-term basis. Something you might want to consider trying is eliminating small daily annoyances that might be building up and contributing to your stress levels. I’d like to share some out-of-the-box ideas you may not have thought of that might help you along the way. • Does keeping a clean home stress you out? Keep cleaning supplies in each bathroom so it’s easier to give the mirror a quick wipe down. Reduce kitchen clutter by getting rid of superfluous items. (I’m looking at you, coffee mugs and large, trendy, insulated drink containers!) • Make your bed every morning. Assigning yourself a chore to do first thing when you are waking up may not sound ideal, but the effort will more than pay off when you are headed to a welcoming, cozy bed after a long day. • Getting a manicure? Consider using clear polish or keeping the color neutral. This way, minor chips won’t be as noticeable and you won’t feel the urgency to take care of it ASAP. • If you have kids, encourage them to help with ageappropriate chores. Imagine not having to empty the dishwasher, take out the trash or vacuum on a daily basis. It may take some time for them to develop a new habit, but

70 | lkn-magazine.com

giving them a way to contribute to taking care of the family home is always a positive! • When putting away laundry, don’t fold your underwear. I get that some people like to be organized and keep things neat. Wrinkles don’t matter with this piece of clothing. Just throw it in the designated drawer. Done. Bonus: This will also save you a decent amount of time which you can bank towards other to-do items. Do the math; it will surprise you! • Try to stop automatically assuming that others have negative or bad intentions. It seems lately that most people are hardwired to assume the worst. Don’t take offense when you know deep down that it wasn’t intended. It’s best to keep that weight off your shoulders. • Politely decline when you are asked to do things that you have no time for or interest in.In the pilot episode of Friends. Joey and Chandler are helping Ross get settled in his new apartment. Joey asks Phoebe if she wants to help and she replies “Oh, I wish I could, but I don’t want to.” Ok, that response is not exactly polite, but you get the picture. Freeing yourself of unnecessary obligations can be, well, freeing! Did any of the tips inspire you to make a change or encourage you to come up with some easy ideas on your own? We’d love to hear about it in our Facebook group! Scan the QR code here, or search for ‘LKN Magazine Readers’ on Facebook to join today! LAKE VS. OCEAN by R O C K Y T H O M P S O N I have to admit to a small amount of anxiety when swimming in the lake. You can’t see anything in the water most of the year, so when something brushes past your foot, you might start to wonder if someone let their pet crocodile loose in the lake. I think our whole family was a bit turned off to swimming in the lake after one incident. My wife and her friend were floating on a raft tied to the dock (our version of boat ownership, it’s much more affordable and no one screams at each other when pulling into the dock). Just off the dock, we spotted a snake swimming straight towards the raft. It popped its head up to look around and then dove under them. There was a lot of screaming and scrambling to get out of the water. I can only imagine the level of panic if the snake had gone onto the raft instead of under it. The good news is that there aren’t really any creatures in the lake that can kill you. There might be a poisonous snake or two, but they don’t want anything to do with you. There are no alligators in the lake. The only thing dangerous that’s in the lake is the water itself (wear a lifejacket if you aren’t a strong swimmer).

My family is in Australia right now, and our local swimming is in the Tasman Sea. Swimming in the ocean is a whole new thing, particularly here. There are sharks all over the world, and in most places, they’re not aggressive towards humans. We get bull and blue sharks around our beach, and they will be aggressive towards humans, especially in the morning and evening. When the lifeguards spot a shark, they blow a siren to tell everyone to get out of the water. You don’t want to be the last one out when the siren goes off. There are also lots of fish (harmless), stingrays (almost always harmless), octopi (some are harmless and some have enough venom to kill 20 full grown adults) and jellyfish (some are among the deadliest creatures in the world and some you can pick up…it’s hard to tell the two apart). One of the wonderful things about travel is that it can give you perspective. For example, after swimming here, I will have no reservations about jumping in the lake this summer, even if I spot one of North Carolina’s harmless snakes on the shore. Of course, the bad thing about perspective when you’re talking about deadly sea creatures is, well, the deadly sea creatures; so hopefully, we come back home with just the right amount of perspective.
