Embracing the holiday spirit, December brings a sense of wonder and joy. In a recent promotional video, we discussed some of our favorite things and, surprisingly, I found myself admitting that “Christmas is my least favorite holiday!” Before you write me off as a scrooge, allow me to explain. It’s the decorating aspect that is not my favorite. Giving gifts is my love language, and I prefer to do that all year long rather than just at Christmas. I’ve just never been one to go all out with decorating my home for Christmas. But, this year, there's a change in the air! The LKN Magazine team is thrilled to announce our sponsorship of a tree at T H E R E D B A R N M A R K E T P L A C E . The excitement is palpable as our team comes together to support the Aiden’s Light Memorial Fund. Stop by The Red Barn Marketplace from December 2nd9th, where local businesses sponsor trees adorned with gifts. Each tree is part of a raffle, with tickets as low as $1 each! On Dec 9th at 4:00 p.m., they will draw one ticket per tree, and the winner takes home everything beneath the tree! Every penny goes towards the meaningful cause of Aiden’s Light. Be a part of this festive season with a purpose – let's make a difference together!

12 INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES TO LIVE BY MONTH-TO-MONTH FOR 2024 by R O B I N S H U P E K E L L E R

In a world where inspiration can often feel elusive, I've always turned to quotes to light my way. While my writing now demands more words than ever before, I've never stopped appreciating the power of these wise sayings. As we embrace 2024, I urge you to consider a simple, yet transformative, piece of advice – step away from your devices and reconnect with the natural world. Not only will it rejuvenate your spirit, it will enrich your relationships with loved ones and deepen your understanding of environmental issues, as well. For the coming year, I've curated 12 inspirational quotes, one for each month, to provide you with a steady source of motivation and guidance. These words will be your compass as you navigate the months ahead. JANUARY "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." ~ C.S. Lewis The beginning of the year is often a time for resolutions and new ambitions. C.S. Lewis reminds us that it's never too late to chase our dreams and set new goals. FEBRUARY "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart." ~ Helen Keller As Valentine's Day approaches, Helen Keller's words remind us to cherish the intangible treasures of life – love, kindness and empathy. MARCH "In three words, I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." ~ Robert Frost No matter what challenges or setbacks we face, life continues to move forward. March, a time of renewal, teaches us the importance of resilience and adaptation. APRIL "April hath put a spirit of youth in everything." ~ William Shakespeare Approach life with a fresh perspective, and let your spirit rejuvenate like the spring season. M AY "The only way to do great work is to love what you do." ~ Steve Jobs Follow your passions and find joy in your daily tasks.

JUNE "In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity." ~ Albert Einstein As summer arrives, Einstein's words encourage us to view challenges as opportunities for growth. J U LY "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." ~ Albert Schweitzer Albert Schweitzer's quote emphasizes that happiness should precede success, not the other way around. AUGUST "The future depends on what you do today." ~ Mahatma Gandhi The height of summer in August should serve as a reminder that our actions today shape our future. Gandhi's message calls us to be proactive and responsible in our choices.

NOVEMBER "Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy and change ordinary opportunities into blessings." ~ William Arthur Ward As we celebrate Thanksgiving in November, William Arthur Ward reminds us of the power of gratitude. Cultivating a thankful heart can infuse every day with blessings and positivity. DECEMBER "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity, and its first chapter is New Year's Day." ~ Edith Lovejoy Pierce In December, we close the book on the year that has passed and open a new one. Edith Lovejoy Pierce's quote encourages us to seize the opportunities that the new year brings, to write our own story and to create our own destiny.

Their holiday happenings are perfect for all ages and an ideal way to spend some family time celebrating the magical season. “We currently have a total of 75 students in the program, with some participating in both choral music and theatre,” explains Director Greg Franklin, who has experience teaching all grade levels of music, both instrumental and choral, along with musical theatre. VOLUME XI

A BOW OF GALLANTRY by T Y L E R A . H A M P T O N

It’s time again for a fun, old-fashioned, family Christmas! The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year. It seems to lift the spirits of all… bringing families and friends together, creating a sense of community, reminiscing about the olden days, and who can forget the Moravian treats from Dewey’s Bakery in Winston-Salem? Of course, it can also create stressful times; an abundance of tasks and an absence of time make this season exhausting for many. This edition of the column is for the ladies- my hat is off to you all for making so much happen for your families throughout the holidays, and I feel that the least I can do is help you with one of the most daunting tasks of all: shopping for men. How do you find the perfect gift for the man who has everything? The short and simple answer is to shop at Hampton’s, but I am not one to cut corners, so here we will dive deeper into the art of gifting masterfully…

I take pride in making Hampton’s a true specialty store, with many of the products being made exclusively for us, and some even being the only ones of certain items in the United States. With an expansive inventory ranging from the most luxurious cashmeres out of Italy to exotic collectible knives and pens, along with limitless possibilities for custom clothing, I wholeheartedly believe that Hampton’s is the best gift store for men in the Charlotte and Lake Norman area. The holiday season is taxing enough as it is; swing by the store and let us take care of you. Wishing you the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny Kaye… - Tyler Hampton

Most men tend to buy their wants and needs throughout the year, so it can be especially difficult to find the ideal item or experience to satisfy their tastes and desires; however, I feel that I can speak for the majority of the male population in saying we are always appreciative of the efforts and items we are given. Socks and boxers aren’t necessarily bad gifts, but thoughtful gifts will always prevail. Consider his hobbies, interests, and personality traits. Is he a golfer? An athlete? Does he appreciate good style (or maybe need a little help with it)? Love to travel? Did his good sunglasses find their way to the bottom of the lake this summer? A gift with personal touch and meaning is sure to make his heart grow by three sizes that day. When a one-year membership to the Jelly of the Month Club simply won’t do, specialty items he would normally pass on buying himself take the top prize, and don’t be afraid to push the boundaries a little. Sure, khakis, a blue shirt, and navy blazer are in his comfort zone, but when searching for a gift to have him rocking around the Christmas tree, expand the horizon a bit and add some excitement. Knowing that you believe he can pull off the look will boost his confidence and make it more memorable than an Official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200shot, range model air rifle.

A H O L I DAY T R A DI T I O N WE “THINK” WE KNOW From candles glowing in windows to angel-topped evergreen trees, the stories behind various Christmastime customs are rich in history and steeped in Christian beliefs. One of the most treasured holiday traditions is the re-creation of the very first Christmas - the nativity scene. Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with designing the first nativity in Italy, 1223 AD in an effort to shift the emphasis of Christmas away from gift giving toward the worship of Christ. This artistic representation of the birth of Jesus grew in popularity in Christian communities around the world and today, centuries later, nativities of all types and sizes are on display in homes, churches, stores, and any number of public and private places. Amid the flurry of ribbons and bows, shopping mall Santas, and all things exterior illumination, the simplicity of the nativity reminds us to slow down, reflect upon, and celebrate the ultimate gift of the season: the birth of Jesus. Unlike many other holiday decorations, the nativity has a direct link to New Testament scripture. Two of the four gospels (Matthew and Luke) provide narratives regarding the birth of Jesus, but surprisingly, the details about the cast of characters around the swaddled baby in the manger are quite sparse. So, just how accurately do today’s nativities reflect the gospel events? As it turns out, biblical historians and nativity buffs agree that the scenes of today bear little resemblance to the day/night Jesus was born. Both the original Greek text and an understanding of the ancient Near East culture are needed to properly translate the events around the first Christmas (which was not December 25th…that date was later adopted by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 4th century). Following is a closer look at the events, individuals, and animals most frequently associated with the manger scene through this “informed” lens. Separating conjecture from scripture is an interesting exercise in uncovering misinterpretation and misrepresentation.

T H E N AT I V I T Y S C E N E B I B L I C A L N AT I V I T Y S C E N E : Mary and Joseph made their way from Nazareth to Bethlehem an unspecified number of days prior to the birth of Jesus for the purpose of tax registration. Mary may have ridden to Bethlehem on a donkey, but there is no mention of this in the Bible. When the couple reached their “hometown” of Bethlehem, the cultural hospitality practices of the day would normally have had relatives graciously open their homes to the couple or, as “royals” from the line of David, local townspeople would have been honored to do so. The image of an innkeeper with a “no vacancy” sign posted on the door, turning Mary and Joseph away in their hour of need is often what we have in mind about the Christmas story, and it is easy to see how this idea came about. Scripture, however, supports a slightly disparate set of circumstances. The Greek phrase “no room in the inn” is composed of “topos” and “kataluma” and is translated “no space in the guest room.” A guest room in a common house was a small, empty room which offered a place of safety and privacy for the night. Those who permanently resided in the home slept in the main part of the house just above the ground level animal pens. And it was common in Eastern society for the family to be accompanied by a few milk goats, a donkey, and a cow as a way to protect their valuable assets from theft during the night. As such, there would have been a manger (aka feeding trough) in that room to keep the animals quiet in tight quarters until they could be returned outside to graze. Scripture makes no mention of Jesus being born in a stable, but it does strongly suggest that Jesus was born in the lower portion of a common home as there was “no space in the guest room.” Thus, it seems that Mary and Joseph may have had to stay in the room where the animals stayed at night. With Westerners’ understanding that feeding troughs are found in the stalls of a stable/barn, the conclusion that Jesus was born in such an outdoor place is a reasonable one, although it is unfounded. Additionally, scripture does not suggest that Mary gave birth on the evening of their arrival into town. The Bible states that while Mary was in Bethlehem, she gave birth to Jesus and that shepherds received word in the evening on the day of his birth

(so it is easy to see how the leap to an evening birth developed). But while the Bible doesn’t provide the exact location or hour of day Jesus was born, scripture is very clear that Mary gave birth to Jesus, wrapped him in cloths, and placed him in a manger. While many modern nativities reflect the presence of sheep, cattle, lambs, an ox and donkey around the baby Jesus, historians agree that any animals, as well as any men, that may have been present at the time of Jesus’ birth would have been ushered out. The ladies in the home (and perhaps a local midwife) would have been with Mary when she “brought forth her firstborn.” And the angels? Luke 2 mentions an angel and a “heavenly host” appearing to the shepherds, but it does not support shepherds, an angel, or a unique star being at the location of the birth. What about the wise men? The Bible specifically states that magi followed a star to locate and worship Jesus, but it does not specify how many wise men there were (we have assumed three because there were three gifts mentioned), how long it took to get there, if they rode camels or even how old Jesus was when they arrived. What is clear, however, is that when the magi eventually arrived, they found the holy family in a house and bowed down to worship Jesus. While we may never know the exact facts and circumstances that Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus experienced at the time of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, the scriptural support for placing Mary and Joseph in an outdoor stable with baby Jesus in a straw filled manger, surrounded by barnyard animals, shepherds with their sheep, three wise men with their camels and gifts, a brilliant star and an angel is lacking. The good news, though, is that regardless of the accuracy portrayed in most present-day nativities, the center of the Christmas story remains the same: the celebration and adoration of the arrival of Jesus on that first holy night over 2000 years ago. But what would a nativity be without this cast of characters that have become holiday tradition? Fortunately, personal aesthetics and artistic interpretation is not only permitted, but encouraged…whether assembling a few or many figurines, display what feels meaningful to you. Joy to the world! The Lord is come.

MAKING TOGETHER TIME COUNT with TEENAGERS by K A R E N C O O P E R

Being a parent of a teenager can be a tricky business. They are finding out who they are outside of the influence of their parents and that can feel like they are pulling away. This is a good thing and means that parents have done their job well. Raising independent kids who aren’t afraid to step out of the comfort of the nest should be the goal. Applaud yourself if this is what’s happening. Still, you want to keep close tabs on your teen and make a space for them to come to you to talk openly about anything and everything that’s on their mind. A great way to do this is to make it a point to spend quality time together on a regular basis. Making your time together count is what it’s all about. Try some of these ideas to stay close and form bonds with your teens that will last a lifetime. Step Into Your Teen’s World It’s likely that your teenager enjoys things that you may not know much about. Be willing to step into their world and let them show you the things they are interested in. Let them be the teacher. Show Sincere Interest in Their Interests Anyone with a Gen Z child already knows they speak an entirely different language. But I want to understand this language (even if I may never be fluent in it). Show a sincere interest in what your teens are doing. Ask what they are working on? Ask about their sports and hobbies (whatever is applicable). Why do they like doing the things they do? These questions can lead to more about their likes and dislikes. Ask about their friends and why they enjoy

20 | lkn-magazine.com

being with them. What do they gain from those friendships? This may be question overload for your teen, so if they are feeling annoyed, back off a little and save some questions for another day. Try to Hear What Often Goes Unsaid Teenagers & young adults are not always great at expressing what they want and need. They can sometimes feel vulnerable and may be afraid of making someone angry or being rejected. Your child could be craving one on one time with you but may see that you are so busy with other things that they do not ask for what they need. Take the initiative to plan this time with your teen to keep your bond strong. Teenagers often have trouble expressing their emotions, so make sure to use your parental intuition to get to the heart of what they really want but may not be saying. Eat Dinner Together It can be really hard in the times we live in but eating dinner together (even a few times a week) can create an opportunity to talk to your teen. During mealtimes, turn off electronics and focus on the conversation. It can be the best way to find out about your teenager’s day. And even though they may protest, they will really appreciate the time spent together. Go for a Drive Together Rides in the car can be a great way to ease into a conversation about almost anything and it gives you the opportunity to find out what’s going on with your teen. One of the good things about riding in a car is that you

don’t have to make eye contact. This can help many teens feel more comfortable bringing up uncomfortable subjects. Another good thing about being in the car is that no one can escape the conversation. If it gets a little uncomfortable, you must work through the awkwardness together. Conquering things like that can help you form a stronger relationship. Do Something Active Sometimes teens don’t like to just sit down and talk. However, if you get up and get moving, it can lead to easier conversation. You could try going for a hike, going bowling, playing catch in the yard or anything that has you both being active together. Schedule a Family Night Set aside time for the entire family to spend time together. Whether you choose to play games together or watch a movie once a week, make it a tradition everyone can count on. It’s important not to make spending time with your teenagers a chore. At this point in their lives, free time is so important. They want to make sure they have plenty of their own personal time. For this reason, keep the activities you want to do together simple. By setting aside specific time to spend with your teenagers and letting it be their choice, you will likely find a lot of joy in really getting to know who your children are and what interests they have. You make a place for them to express hopes and dreams, that one day may be their reality.

HOW TO BE A PURPLE SQUIRREL by L E S L I E S P E A S You may be asking yourself, “What in the world is a purple squirrel, and why would I want to be one?” Purple squirrel is a term coined by recruiters to describe sought-after candidates with the perfect, but often impossible, combination of skills and traits for a given job. How would you like to be the first person that leaders think of when a promotional opportunity presents itself? Or the person that others think of when considering who is a great teammate? I want to help you fit those descriptions by being a purple squirrel and maximizing your potential, so let’s look at seven things you can do to that end. BE TRUSTWORTHY

EXUDE POSITIVE ENERGY

To be trustworthy, you need to: • Show respect – Treat others in a way that shows you care about their well-being and consider them a person of worth. • Be authentic – This means living your life according to your own values and goals, rather than those of other people. • Demonstrate integrity – C.S. Lewis defines integrity as doing the right thing for the right reason, even when no one is looking. • Extend trust to others – This involves giving others the benefit of the doubt and trusting them.

Have you noticed that we, as humans, tend to go negative? It is called the negativity bias, and it was instilled in us to keep us safe. As a result, we have to work extra hard to be positive! Below are some things that you can do to exude positive energy: • Avoid complaining • Smile more • Avoid energy vampires – other people that suck the energy out of you and leave you feeling depleted • Practice gratitude • Reset or adjust your attitude • Celebrate your successes

BE A LEARNER B E A T E A M P L AY E R Henry Ford said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” To be a purple squirrel, you must continuously seek out learning opportunities. In addition, you must be willing to be coachable and accept constructive feedback.

According to Patrick Lencioni, the ideal team player is humble, hungry and smart. Let’s explore these traits in more detail: • Humble – People who are humble have a lack of excessive ego or concerns about status, and they put others before themselves. • Hungry – People who are hungry are always looking for more to do, to learn and new things to take on. They don’t have to be pushed by a manager to work harder because they are self-motivated and diligent. • Smart – This definition is a little different than you might think. It involves having common sense about people by asking good questions, listening well and engaging effectively with others.

It just makes sense that to be your best, you need to care for yourself by eating healthy, exercising, sleeping well, managing your stress and showing some self-compassion. You can care for others by demonstrating empathy, listening to them, showing appreciation and simply being kind.

Did you know that if you work more in your areas of strength, you will be much happier, more successful and productive? The first step is to discover what your strengths are! You can do this by taking assessments such as the Working Genius or Clifton Strengths; doing some selfreflection; and/or asking trusted friends or colleagues for feedback. Once you have identified your strengths, figure out how you can best apply them at work and in your life.

Your vision is a clear picture of who you want to be and what you want to do in the future. When articulating your career vision, you should consider your strengths, values, skills, lifestyle, family and what you enjoy doing.

S H OW YO U C A R E

To write your vision, (1) State the field you want to work in or the specific job you want to have, and (2) Explain your reason for setting the career goal in your first sentence.

This is a very high-level overview as I tried to smash a whole workshop into one article. But, I hope it will help to provide some food for thought on how you can be your best at work and elevate your potential.

I’LL BE THERE: L I V I N G L I F E AS I N E E D TO K N OW I T by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N My friend was recently diagnosed with a lifealtering, life-threatening disease. To her, to me, to all who know and love her, the news was unexpected. A seemingly healthy senior citizen, running her small business and active in her community, and now, who was she and who would she become through whatever was ahead? While my heart sank and my thoughts ricocheted from one possible outcome to another, it was my friend who offered perspective, saying: “It’s a whole new world that I need to catch up with while also trying to continue life as I need to know it.” I took my cue from her lead, understanding that while she was moving, half blind into completely new territory, living her life in a familiar way would be critical to her mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I sat with that dichotomy for a long while as my mind raced to the innumerable “What if’s.” From my Southern perch to her Northern abode, I cautiously asked, “Are you getting the support you need?” “Oh yes, people have been wonderful. X is taking me for my radiology treatments, and Y will accompany me for the surgery when that time comes. But honestly, Jean Marie, it’s the questions that wear me down, so many questions about my condition, and did I ask the doctor this or that. It never ends.” My friend’s comments told me what I needed to know about how I could be there for her. And because she lives so far away, I knew that my support would be “virtual.” I called twice a week, asking first “Is this a good time?” Which allowed her to know I was available to her and put her in charge of whether or not she wanted to engage. I asked, “How are you doing today?” which expressed my concern for her, as opposed to drilling her with a litany of tiresome, angstinducing questions. And then I followed whatever narrative path she preferred. Sometimes, we talked about her illness. Or rather, she talked and I listened.

24 | lkn-magazine.com

Occasionally posing a brief question, but mostly just acknowledging, empathizing. At other times, she just wanted to know about me, about Dean, about Paris, or to reminisce about some sweet, shared memory. We often indulge our love of language and story by talking about books and debating the merits of Austen versus Bronte. Again and again, I got the distinct sense that these fluid, meandering conversations were a channel through which she was living life as she needed to know it. I looked forward to our calls as much as ever, before the illness, before the grave uncertainties, before the profound, stop-your butt-in-its-tracks awareness hit like a ton of bricks: that living life as we need to know it applies to all of us, all of the time. For now, I am following my friend’s lead and trusting my intuition. Here’s how the experts say we can “be there” for a friend or loved one in a similar situation: • Say if you feel awkward instead of pretending this thing isn’t happening. • Give them a warm hand squeeze or hug. • Call, send a card, or text to let them know you’re thinking of them. • Tell them that if they want to talk you’ll be there to listen – then, be available. • Respect their need for privacy. • Offer support throughout the journey - at the beginning, during and after treatment. • Share a joke or laugh with them if this seems appropriate. • Offer to help in specific, practical ways. • Keep your relationship as normal and as balanced as possible. But don’t: • Say you know how they feel – because you can’t, even if you have had a grave illness. • Tell them to ‘be strong’ or ‘be positive’ – they don’t need this type of pressure! • Take things personally if they seem angry or upset or don’t want to talk. • Offer advice that they haven’t asked for. • Compare their situation to someone else’s, because each person’s experience is unique. Through all of this, I am reminded to do my best to live my life as I need to know it...

Uncovering the Rich Tapestry of Local Arts and Culture Seeing “Coco in Concert ‘’ with the Mexican National Orchestra, and watching Music Director & Conductor, Esin Aydingoz, in person was a transcendental experience for me, Esin, an emerging conductor and composer working in a wide range of genres, including animation, silent films, documentaries, TV series, video games and stage musicals was absolutely awesome. Originally from Turkey, Esin moved to the US to study at Berklee College of Music, where she recently served as the Assistant Chair of the Screen Scoring Department. Esin was nominated by the Society of Composers & Lyricists for the prestigious David Raksin Award for Emerging Talent for scoring the feature film “Simchas and Sorrows” and her cello arrangement of Paint It Black, featured in Tim Burton’s Golden Globe-nominated Netflix series “Wednesday,” reached #1 on the Billboard Classical Charts, with over seventeen million Spotify plays. Her latest documentary score for “Black Barbie” premiered at SXSW and her music for “The Monster of the Desert” and “Noor” both won multiple awards, including Best Score, on the indie film circuit. Esin has conducted live-to-picture on tour with the Berklee Silent Film Orchestra, is the assistant music director of Disney’s a cappella singing sensation “DCappella” and has created arrangements for multiple Disney recordings and performances. Ms. Aydingoz’s arrangements have been performed by Grammy-Award winning artists such as Lalo Schifrin, Booker T. Jones, and 2003 Eurovision winner Sertab Erener. As a mentor for Sound Thinking NYC, board member for the Society of Composers and Lyricists, and an active leader of the

After falling in love with the beauty and serenity of lake life, Darren has built Schmolke Construction from the ground up, and his thriving company has become the very best resource for lake dwellers who have one thing in common: Lake houses require docks! For Darren, that means designing, building and installing new docks for homes during any season of the year. He is also the master and local go-to contact for dock repair, installation and repair of boat and PWC lifts, float replacement and any and all lift repairs. While you’re getting to know why Schmolke Construction is the best in the business, be sure to visit them at the Mid-Atlantic Boat Show at the Charlotte Convention Center this coming February 8th through February 11th. When you stop by for information, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to register for the amazing grand prize of a F R E E F LOAT I N G D O C K with a 20-foot slip! Visit ncboatshows.com for more details, and check the show program for their exact booth location. You’ll also be able to chat with Darren about his impressive aluminum barge – which he had custom built in south Louisiana – and a 30-foot trailer, he recently added to his professional line-up of tools. He is ready to transport his business from lake to lake, delivering the impeccable service every client deserves – and continuing to build lifelong partnerships with those in the Lake Norman community.

“Even though every new project has its unique challenges, I am committed to staying on task and on budget,” he adds. Those are also words clients love to hear! With more than 20 years of experience, Darren’s team also offers the most efficient and accurate pile driving barge on Lake Norman. “We provide pile driving services and the overall construction of fixed and floating docks of all types,” he explains. “What might take some installers a full day to do, we can accomplish in only a few hours. Clients love that we are able to save them time and money.”

CREATIVE INSPIRATION With a constantly growing clientele made up largely of returning customers and referrals from friends and neighbors, Schmolke Construction boasts a repertoire of a wide variety of projects, including construction of the 20,000-square-foot indoor riding arena at Lakeside Farms and Stables, the Hildebrand Library, luxury town homes in Charlotte and many custom homes both on and off Lake Norman.

NEVER ONE SIZE FITS ALL If you’re at the point of designing an all-new dock from scratch, you’ll immediately sense Darren’s ability to comprehend your dream vision. Being a sincere listener to clients’ ideas seems to set the Schmolke team apart in the Lake Norman area. After all, no two clients – and no two docks – are the same!

If you’re also located in Charlotte, Concord, Cornelius, Davidson, Denver, Huntersville, Mooresville, Statesville or Troutman, or have a home on Lake Wylie, High Rock Lake or Mountain Island Lake, Schmolke Construction should be your first phone call for the most comprehensive packages which include dock design, permit acquisition and follow up service for that most important piece of your lakeside home.

“I listen to new and repeat clients intently and really want to get a sense of how they envision using their dock,” says Darren. “Next, we’ll have our opportunity to submit a preliminary drawing and design. We also have a good amount of flexibility which clients appreciate. Our docks can be small-scale, a spacious two-story version or somewhere in between – and we also work with floating and fixed docks of all shapes and sizes.” At an initial, complimentary consultation with Darren, you’ll discuss specific boat dockage requirements, what your family’s recreational needs are now – and in the future – and topography and any environmental issues. The timeframe to complete a standard 1,000-square-foot dock is typically two to six weeks, and offering such a variety of dock-related services keeps Schmolke Construction busy year-round which has created a dream scenario for Darren. Passionate and super creative when it comes to engineering and design, he describes himself as a problem-solver, which is a definite bonus for clients.

When it’s finally time for a brand-new dock for your lake home – or if a few repairs for your current much-loved dock are in your family’s future, reach Darren and Schmolke Construction at 504.388.1994 or 704.450.5223. M U S I C A L A LC H E M Y: T H E A L E K OT TAWAY B A N D ' S R E C I P E FO R S U CC E SS by R O B I N S H U P E K E L L E R Hello, LKN music lovers! This new column in your favorite magazine was ready to explore the local music scene; and on October 17th, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging, in collaboration with Forsyth Woman, Style Encore and Medaloni Cellars, presented Rosé@ Medaloni Cellars 3P Auction Fundraiser where I met and listened to Alek Ottaway Band. As Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons sang in 1963 “Oh, what a night!” The proceeds from this fundraiser support the 3P Fund (Positive Pink Power Fund), a vital initiative started by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging seven years ago. The primary goal of the 3P Fund is to provide mammograms to women who, due to financial constraints, cannot afford this crucial screening. While health insurance typically covers preventative screenings, many women in our local community remain uninsured, causing them to delay these essential check-ups. Back to the music scene! Everything I really needed to sustain and nourish me was at this amazing event – music, food, wine, fashion, a silent auction and a lot of generous supporters. Muscling their way into the Lake Norman music scene, Alek Ottaway Band brought down the house with a stunning two-set experience that transported me back in time to pure talent. A five-piece band with

lead singer and acoustic guitarist Alek Ottaway was supported by his amazing team of captivating musical artists who accompanied him to perfection. With two lead guitarists, a bass and last, but definitely not least, the drummer who covers the percussion section! Their country/folk/rock style is said to be pure country by lead vocalist Alek Ottaway. But, let me tell you, anyone that still enjoys the perfect harmonies of The Eagles or the blues folk music of John Mayer, will be mesmerized by their raw talent. Call it country if it makes you feel better, Alek! The two leads, dueling it out and shredding the electric guitar the way it was meant to sound are fantastic artists in their own right! The bass is, as Megan Trainor would say, “all about that bass, no treble” and brings the rhythm section together along with the drummer, who is an amazing percussion artist and is literally the heartbeat of the band. My two personal favorites of the band are 31-year-old lead electric guitarist Kyle – he is an amazing lead guitarist, and the percussionist on drums, whose name I did not catch. If you are looking to enjoy local live music the way it is meant to be heard, please find this band on the internet, and go see them live! Be on the lookout for Alek and his band,

but don’t let that name fool you as I had to learn the hard way. He does not have an email, but he says that you can follow him on @alekottawaymusic on Instagram. He is also out-and-about the surrounding areas with other musicians. But, this is the one band if you can find them playing together that you do not want to miss. From my limited understanding of Alek Ottaway, he recently split with a band and is seeking gigs, if you can book him with his busy schedule, throughout the Lake Norman area and the surrounding counties as a soloist, as duos and with the young legends he performs with in the Alek Ottaway Band, or AOB for short. D O N O T MISS THIS BAND LKN READERS! Yes, I am shouting it to the rooftops! I love this band! Go out! Listen and support live local music! Look out for the January 2024 issue when I cover the bands performing at another event that we here at Forsyth Magazines’ sponsor called “Fizz and Beats.” All the rage is alcohol-free drinks, which I love by the way, and the zero alcohol drinks are the Fizz part of the event. The Beats part of the event features several local musical artists, and I can’t wait to report back to you LKN readers! In the meantime, get out and listen to the music! Happy Rockin’ & Rollin’!

B E AT I N G T H E

H O L I D AY B L U E S by L E S L I E S P E A S

The holidays are typically portrayed as joyous times full of celebrations and connecting with loved ones. But many people don’t experience the holidays in this way. They may experience feelings of sadness that last throughout the holiday season known as the “holiday blues.” Symptoms include things like depression, fatigue, tension, frustration, loneliness, isolation, a sense of loss, hopelessness, stress, anxiety, and painful reflection. If you are experiencing the holiday blues, here are some suggestions to make the holidays easier to deal with.

Try Not to Isolate Yourself The holiday blues may make you want to stay at home alone in your jammies. Look for ways to enjoy social connections. If you’re feeling lonely, ask a friend or family member to come over. Focus on spending time with positive, caring people who have your best interests at heart, and try to steer clear of people who drain you and zap your energy. You may want to consider joining a local club or volunteering for a cause you are passionate about. Exercise Regularly While it can be difficult to stick to a workout schedule when you are feeling down, exercise can be very helpful in beating the holiday blues. You don’t have to go crazy and run a marathon or anything but some regular periods of exercise throughout the week will help. Even going for a short walk each day can be beneficial. Learn to Say ‘No’ During the holidays, there are frequently many demands on your time and resources. You don’t have to go to every party or respond affirmatively to every request. Avoid overcommitting by knowing your limits and saying ‘no’ to things that don’t fit your priorities or that you feel will cause undue stress. Find Time for Yourself Make sure that you make time for yourself to relax, even if it’s just 15 to 20 minutes a day. Enjoying some quiet time, reading a book, taking a walk in nature, doing yoga, or participating in some other relaxing activity can be very helpful in dealing with holiday stress. Manage Your Expectations Perhaps you have lost someone close to you, or your kids are grown. People and the holidays change over time. It’s important to focus on connections that are important to you in the present and create new traditions if the old ones aren’t feasible or enjoyable. Most of us don’t experience picture-perfect Norman Rockwell holidays. The holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Don’t overindulge. The holidays are full of treats and there are lots of opportunities to indulge in alcoholic beverages. Overindulging can leave you feeling sluggish and tired and may also lead to feelings of guilt and shame. Allow yourself some indulgences but try to limit unhealthy holiday foods, large portions, and alcohol consumption. Face negative feelings in a healthy way. If you’re dealing with loss, loneliness, or isolation, you may want to consider therapy or confiding in a close friend or family member. Acknowledge the struggle that you’re facing and do your best to create new, positive memories.

DITCH THE RESOLUTIONS; Focus on Your 3Ps by L I N D S E Y F I S H E R Here we are heading into the final month of 2023. How can that be? Wasn’t it just spring last week?

As my clients focus on health and fitness goals, I always begin with sharing, “your body will not do what your mind does not say ‘yes’ to first.”

As cliché as it sounds, time seems to pass so quickly the older we get. As the days and months fly by, I find myself thinking of how much I want to accomplish – in business, relationships, health, wealth as well as spiritual and personal growth in this season and in the year ahead. What do you think? Are you embracing this season of life, the upcoming holiday season and the potential that exists in the new year?

So, here is a take-away for you as we head into this holiday season and into the new year. Before waiting until the end of December or first of January to make those resolutions for 2024, take some time to focus on your 3 Ps. It is amazing; the drive, determination and resilience that comes when your 3Ps are aligned.

Remember, what we resist, persists. I reflect on my journey this year and have set goals for 2024! I am excited to embrace this season for all it is and listen to God calling me to be where I am. At the same time, I find excitement in each sunrise and fulfillment in each sunset. I can remain in a place of daily gratitude despite the incredible business roller coaster I have been on through 2023. This year has fueled my perseverance and drive and served as a reminder that the only limitation in getting to where I want to be in life is myself. Being a coach, educator, motivator, speaker, guide; I am only excellent in my trade because of my mindset and the exceptional coaching and guidance from my own coaches and mentors. “Success is not an accident, success is a choice.” ~ Stephen Curry In 2014, Pete Carroll led the Seattle Seahawks to their first Super Bowl win in franchise history after engaging every team member to work with a mindpower coach. Powerful story.

PURPOSE. PASSION. PRINCIPLES. Your purpose. Where you are going in life. Your passion. How you will get there. Your principles. How will you behave on the journey. Once you have these specifically defined, decisions become exceptionally clear. Productivity skyrockets. Mental clarity abounds. Relationships improve. Business grows. Healthy choices become habit. You feel fulfilled and grateful every single day. So, let’s talk. I want to hear from you! Together we can make mountains move in 2024!

Wishing each one of you the focus and resilience to achieve all of your life goals! If you want to learn more or book a Discovery Call, contact Lindsey via www.LindseyFisherNC.com

by M E G A N TAY L O R Advent calendars are a popular tradition for the holiday season and help people count down to Christmas in a fun and festive way. Specifically, the calendar marks the period of Advent or the preparation for the birth of Jesus Christ. Today’s version of the Advent calendar dates back to the 1800s. It is based on the German Lutheran’s tradition of writing chalk tally marks on walls or lighting candles to count the remaining days until Christmas. Coming in different shapes and sizes, this type of calendar usually starts on December 1st and goes to either December 24 or 25. They can be standing holders with doors or window cutouts, hanging pieces of fabric, or individual containers. Each day on the calendar holds a small trinket to celebrate the season. Some examples of trinkets could be daily devotions, candy, books, toys, snacks, small gifts, or something special. There are even pet versions. A quick search in stores and on online shops will produce a plethora of various advent calendars. Whether you are into Christmas themed items, sports, a specific hobby, or a TV show or movie, there is probably an Advent calendar for it. For the entire month of December, items are taken away from the Advent calendar. By the time Christmas comes, the calendar is left empty, there are 24 or 25 treats for a person to enjoy, and can sometimes be used for next year. However, there is another type of Advent calendar that isn’t as well-known, but still has the same importance and value as the traditional one. In addition, this type of calendar doesn’t become empty by the end of the month; in fact, it becomes full. Let me introduce you to the reverse Advent calendar. The reverse Advent calendar follows the same process as the traditional. It begins on December 1st and runs through the 24th or 25th. As mentioned above, you don’t receive a gift with the reverse Advent calendar. Instead, you donate an item to a box or container each day. At the end of the season, you will then take your items to your selected charity. Making a reverse Advent calendar is simple and easy. First, select a charity or nonprofit organization you would like to collect items for. Be sure that your choice is important to you and your family. If you are having a hard time deciding on one nonprofit, select a few and divide up the days with specific items for a specific charity. For example, the first week will be items collected for one charity, the next week will be items for another nonprofit, and so on. This will help motivate you to donate and add to your box. Next, pick out your container to hold all of the items. Get creative and decorate your holder. You can even turn it into a theme or something that resembles your favorite sport, hobby, etc. Lastly, create a list of items to place in the box for the month of December. Check with your chosen organization(s) beforehand and see what items they need the most, items they accept, or any special instructions. Many nonprofits have wish lists for this time of the year. Then, start collecting! Some items may need to be bought, but second-hand items may work just as well. Also, get your family, friends, and neighbors involved. Ask them for donations to ask to your box, if you feel comfortable.

38 | lkn-magazine.com

A final idea for the reverse Advent calendar that doesn’t cost too much is a random acts of kindness calendar. For each day of December, complete a random act of kindness with your family and mark it down on the calendar. Whether you are adding donation items to a box or filling up a calendar with kindness, the reverse Advent calendar will leave you feeling fulfilled with the holiday spirit. It is also a great way to teach your children and yourself about the importance of gifting and caring for others during this time of the year. It is a season of giving, not just receiving, and the reverse Advent calendar is the perfect way to do just that.

WHEN I WAS A JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL, I HAD A FOOD SENSITIVITY TEST DONE AS I WAS HAVING STOMACH ISSUES. SURPRISINGLY, WHEN THE RESULTS CAME BACK, I HAD A HIGH SENSITIVITY TO GLUTEN. I HAD ALWAYS EATEN GLUTEN, BUT THE TIME CAME FOR ME TO LEARN HOW TO EAT A GLUTEN-FREE DIET. Originally, I began researching online about eating gluten-free and found some gluten-free cookbooks to read. Over the past several years, I have found it easy to eat gluten-free as there are so many wonderful options now. I can confidently say that by eliminating gluten from my diet, I have experienced less stomach pain and headaches. Now, I am happy to share some foods that are naturally gluten-free, some of my favorite brands of gluten-free food items, and some helpful tips for eating out at restaurants. This article is intended for people who are sensitive to gluten rather than allergic to gluten. Identifying Naturally Gluten-Free Foods: The good news for anyone who is eating gluten-free is that many foods are naturally gluten-free! Many whole foods like fruits, greens, and vegetables do not contain any gluten. Bananas, apples, watermelon, strawberries, and grapes are some of my favorite fruits to eat. Potatoes, broccoli, green beans, cucumber, and cauliflower are some of my favorite vegetables to eat. Protein is another food category that is naturally gluten-free. I will usually eat chicken, beef, salmon, and eggs. As I have gotten older, I have come to enjoy salads as they are gluten-free as long as you order the salad without croutons. Additional naturally gluten-free foods that I enjoy are yogurt, rice, beans, almonds, potato chips, and popcorn. When it comes to grains, you have to intentionally choose brands that make glutenfree variations. The grain food category includes food like bread, pasta, cereal, and crackers. While it may seem frustrating to find alternatives to these grain foods, there are plenty of delicious options available at the grocery store which I talk about below. Amazing Gluten-Free Brands: As there is an abundance of gluten-free brands available at the grocery store, I have listed some of my favorite brands in hopes of simplifying the gluten-free grocery shopping experience for you. For bread, my favorite brands are Canyon Bakehouse

frozen bread, O’Doughs frozen bagels, and Trader Joe’s gluten free whole grain bread. For cereal, my favorite brands are any variation of both Cheerios and Chex. For granola, my favorite brands are One Degree Organic Foods and Purely Elizabeth. For pasta, my favorite brands are Barilla and Jovial. For crackers, my favorite brands are Simple Mills and Blue Diamond Almond. For crunchy cookies, the Simple Mills cookies made with almond flour are the absolute best. Oreo has also come out with gluten-free options now that are delicious as well. For pretzels, my favorite brands are Quinn and Snyder’s. For gluten-free baking mixes, I highly recommend King Arthur’s gluten-free brownie mix, muffin mix, and cookie mix. I always suggest reading the product packaging to ensure that the product is indeed gluten-free. If the product is gluten-free, there will be a “GF” labeled somewhere on the packaging. Tips for Eating at Restaurants: For gluten sensitivities, it is not too difficult to eat out. If you are sensitive to gluten, then I suggest first asking the restaurant staff if they have a gluten-free menu. Oftentimes, restaurants will have gluten-free menus that people are not aware of. In other instances, some restaurants will have dishes on their menu labeled with a “GF” beside them to indicate that the dish is gluten-free. Also, do not be afraid to ask about gluten-free options! I have learned to ask the restaurant staff if they have gluten free bread. Most places offer gluten-free bread now which is nice. Specifically, Jersey Mike’s and Chick-fil-a offer gluten-free bread options. When in doubt, look for those naturally gluten-free options on the menu. If I cannot find an entire dish that is glutenfree, I will typically order a salad with fries or various gluten-free side dishes. My wish is that these tips would be helpful to you and encourage you in your gluten-free eating journey!

LESSONS LEARNED, LEADERSHIP AND LAKE LIFE A C O N V E R S AT I O N W I T H M O O R E S V I L L E ’ S M AT T D O H E R T Y

Matt Doherty may have been raised in New York, but he has long called the Lake Norman area home. It’s where he took his first coaching job as an assistant under Bob McKillop at Davidson College in 1989; where he met Kelly, his wife of 32 years; and where their two children, Tucker and Hattie, graduated from high school. The lure of lake life and the sense of community is what drew Doherty back to Mooresville twice over the last 34 years after coaching stints at Kansas, Notre Dame, UNC, Florida Atlantic and SMU. The family settled here for good in 2012 when Doherty rewrote his professional playbook, turning his coaching skills on the court to the C-suite. In addition to executive and peer coaching (DohertyCoaching.com), he appears on WBT and WFNZ radio every Wednesday afternoon, is a motivational speaker, hosts a monthly talk show on Bloomberg TV and produces segments for his own podcast, “Rebound,” where he interviews business and sports leaders. His book “Rebound: From Pain to Passion,” details his personal journey after being forced to resign as head coach at his alma mater (UNC) to his renewed purpose of leadership. Beginning in January, Doherty will share his hardlearned wisdom with our readers in a special Coach’s Corner series featuring businesses in the Lake Norman community. We sat down with him to talk lessons learned, leadership, lake life and what’s next. (Responses may be slightly edited for brevity.)

L E SS O N S L E A R N E D, L E A D E R S H I P A N D L A K E L I F E

L K N : Most people are familiar with Matt Doherty, the starting player on the UNC 1982 National Championship team with Michael Jordan or as Head Coach at Notre Dame and UNC. You have said those were the best of times and the worst of times. How have the tough lessons learned shaped who you are today? D O H E R T Y : Losing my job at UNC was the most emotional scarring thing that has ever happened to me. I went from being named 2001 AP National Coach of the Year and our team winning the ACC Regular Season Championship to, two years later, being forced to resign in a very public way. It was personally and professionally devastating. I knew I had to embrace my mistakes, so I embarked on a mission to “learn and grow,” beginning a leadership journey that took me to the UVA Darden School of Business and The Wharton School. Now, my mess – getting fired at North Carolina – is now my message. I want to help people avoid the landmines I stepped on during those years. L K N : How is coaching business executives to become better leaders like coaching college players on the court?

state finals. In his senior year, the team went to the state finals again, and Tucker was named All American. He ended up getting a Division I lacrosse scholarship to Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition, my daughter, Hattie, swam at Lake Norman High School and ended up getting a rowing scholarship to The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Lake Norman community has served the Doherty family well! And, of course, we love the water. L K N : What’s next for you? D O H E R T Y : In the immediate future, I’m excited to host the second Quarterly REBOUND Podcast LIVE event on December 14th from 4-6 pm at Community Matters Café. Our special guest is Fred Whitfield, Hornets Sports and Entertainment President and Vice Chairman. The event brings together Charlotte’s top leaders in sports and business with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Community Matters Café. For more information, you can go to thereboundpodcastlive.eventbrite.com. I also look forward to sharing more leadership lessons with your readers in our upcoming Coach’s Corner series.

D O H E R T Y : I always say business is a contact sport. Leadership is a learned behavior. It takes practice. It’s a skill that you must consistently develop. Whether you are a player, a coach, a small business owner or CEO of a major corporation, you must be willing to embrace failure. We need to allow ourselves to be vulnerable to failure and examine it. That’s how real progress is made. L K N : What is it about the Lake Norman area that kept pulling you back here? D O H E R T Y : We had a network of friends from our first time living here. Plus, the school system has a great reputation. The icing on the cake was that my son was entering 9th grade and wanted a good lacrosse program. Lake Norman has a great program led by Coach James Brugger. Tucker played varsity as a freshman, and the team went to the

Why the Meaning of It’s a Wonderful Life Still Resonates in Today’s World by M E G A N TAY L O R

“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.” “Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.” “What is it you want, Mary? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word, and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down.” These three quotes come from one of the most beloved Christmas movies, It’s a Wonderful Life. Since its premiere in 1946, It’s a Wonderful Life has been shown on big and small screens during the holiday season. It is a traditional film shown on television every Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember and is based on the short story, The Greatest Gift and A Christmas Carol. In this movie, down on his luck businessman George Bailey is visited by an angel. George sees what life would have been like for his family and friends if he had never existed. George’s viewpoint on life quickly changes after he discovers the impact he has had on those around him. Although unsuccessful at the box office, this heartwarming tale has become a holiday mainstay throughout the years and is now considered to be one of the greatest films of all time and one of the best Christmas films. There are many reasons as to why It’s a Wonderful Life has remained in people’s hearts, but the most important thing that still resonates with people is its message. Digging down deeper, the film is a story about friendships, fellowships and community. Growing up and throughout his adult life, George Bailey dreamt of leaving his hometown and traveling throughout the world. Each time George decides to venture away, he is quickly pulled back in by his responsibilities to his family and town. In addition, George is filled with the moral duty of doing what is right in every situation; no matter if he doesn’t come out the winner. Taking over his family’s building and loan bank, George continued to put others before himself, mostly when it came to money. As the film progresses, George realizes that his dreams have passed him by and contemplates suicide. Yet, once the angel, Clarence, visits him, George finally notices how his dreams did come true and how he does have a “wonderful life.” “You see George, you really had a wonderful life. Don’t you see what a mistake it would be to throw it away?”

50 | lkn-magazine.com

This meaning resonates with people because we may not think we have had an impact on those around us, but in reality, we have. George’s actions and decisions are ones made from love, family and friendship. He did what he had to do in order to survive. Our daily lives are filled with things to do from sunup to sundown. We are constantly busy with numerous pressures and decisions to make, just like George’s life. However, when we slow down and take everything in, we are given the chance to see our influence on others and what we truly mean to them. What may seem small or insignificant to us may have made the biggest impression on someone else. One of my favorite quotes from the film is when Clarence tells George, “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” George Bailey’s life and troubles mirror many people’s in today’s world. Our days are often filled with stress, concerns and worries. We are all trying to do the best that we can in a tough world. But, when we take the time, we will realize just how lucky we are to be here. We realize that our loved ones would have a void in their lives without us and that their lives could have been altered without having us around. The moral of the story? Take time to tell others what they mean to you and the impact they have had on you this Christmas season. This simple act of kindness can change someone’s day and possibly life. As George’s brother, Harry Bailey, says at the end of the movie, “A toast to my big brother George, the richest man in town.” Thank you, George Bailey, for always reminding us to let others know just how much they mean to us and for always showing us how doing the right thing does have an impact in the end.

smiling or industry-specific stock photos of inanimate objects. Worse yet, let’s say you don’t come across any photos at all. What will your impression be on the legitimacy and trustworthiness of the business? One of the top excuses for the absence of headshots on a website is that the business owner doesn’t ever like any photos of his or herself. However, a website is not for the business owner, it’s for converting the target audience into customers, or supporting the customers they already have. If you don’t have any headshots or team photos on your website in this day in age, you’re undoubtedly missing out on an opportunity to add a human touch to your online presence. # 5 | P R I N T E D M AT E R I A L S If your business uses printed forms of advertisements such as brochures, postcards or flyers, a headshot can elevate and personalize your print marketing efforts. When people see a headshot on a piece of marketing material, it makes the business seem more real and approachable. It also helps to build trust and rapport with potential customers. This is because people are naturally drawn to faces. In fact, studies have shown that people are more likely to remember information if it is paired with a face. Another benefit of using headshots in your print marketing materials is that they can help you to stand out from the competition. In a sea of logos and text, a headshot can help your marketing materials to grab attention and make a more lasting impression. A headshot can go anywhere seamlessly–on a brochure cover, on a side column, or on the back with your contact information. It can even be the only photo used at all on the printed advertisement for a really personal statement. #6 | BUSINESS CARDS Closely related to brochures and flyers but uniquely significant is the use of headshots

on your business cards. Business cards are often exchanged after someone has made an in-person connection. However, they usually end up in a pile of other business cards with mainly text, logos and phone numbers. Imagine trying to figure out who was who after a networking event while sifting through a stack of business cards– can you see how it would be advantageous to you if your headshot was on your business card in this case? Since a business card is an introduction, yours should have your face on it if possible. # 7 | A R T I C L E S & P R E S S R E L E AS E S Another lesser-known application for your headshots is in magazine or online publication articles and press releases. When advertising in a magazine, it is to your advantage to use a headshot– especially if your advertisement includes a full spread story. Headshots help to add intrigue and infuse a human element into an otherwise monotonous wall of text. More importantly, incorporating a headshot into your articles and press releases will make you more relatable, effectively introducing yourself in the best light possible. Many of my headshot clients don’t anticipate these applications when they come in for their headshot, but when that opportunity arises for a press release or magazine feature, they are prepared to make the most of it, even on a crunch deadline. #8 | INDUSTRY NICHE MATERIALS While this certainly won’t apply to everyone, there are plenty of professionals who would benefit from having their headshot on their industryspecific marketing materials. For example, an author will need an updated photo of themselves for their author bio, likely to go on an inside cover of thousands of copies of a book. A real estate agent should consider having their headshot on yard signs to promote their real estate

listing. An actor or actress will need an updated and industry standard headshot to share with casting directors, and unless they’re already well established, the headshot is a make or break aspect of their audition. #9 | PRESENTATIONS Another lesser-known opportunity to share your headshot is in the context of presentations, awards and speaker events. These opportunities are often had on a short timeline where a professional headshot appointment may or may not even be possible to obtain, so it’s important to have an updated headshot taken regularly in anticipation for things you may not even know are on your horizon. A headshot is often displayed in high resolution on a large projector screen in these cases, and you’ll want it to be flattering, professional and recent. #10 | FOR YOU & YOUR LOVED ONES Last but not least, headshots are a gift to yourself and your family. Like mile markers on your journey through life, headshots tell the story of who you are at a moment in time so you can celebrate now, and remember later. They’ll be heirlooms for generations to come, and they’re more important for personal reasons in the long term than for their professional reasons in the short term. I cannot stress enough that high quality professional headshots are for yourself. Ultimately, it’s this application that drives me to work with dozens of headshot clients each month. Knowing that these photos will be important to my clients on a personal level–that they’ll raise their confidence, or help to show them that they have a gorgeous candid smile, or that they in fact do not have a “bad side”--that’s what empowers me to keep doing my thing as a photographer.

So, if you are looking for a way to improve your health and extend your lifespan, consider making tea part of your regular routine. Surprisingly, some of your fur babies might benefit from selected varieties of herbal tea, as well. My bunnies and hamster have been drinking organic and natural teas and have benefited from better behavior, mood and longevity. My happy tea-drinking hammy has far exceeded his average lifespan by nearly two additional years. Of course, other health-promoting factors have contributed to his longevity, including consistent daily exercise, natural sunlight, fresh air, a healthy omnivore diet and unconditional love and bonding. While tea is a beloved beverage for many humans, it’s essential to approach the idea of sharing it with common household pets with caution. Not all pets can or should consume tea, and even for those that can, it should be done sparingly and with consideration for their specific needs and health conditions. Please keep in mind that some teas, herbs and fruits may be harmful or toxic to your pets, so do your research first. Also, there is no guarantee that you or your pets will be healthier or live longer when drinking tea.

HEALTH-BOOSTING & LIFESPAN-EXTENDING BENEFITS FOR PEOPLE & PETS Tea, one of the most popular beverages sipped and savored for centuries since ancient times, boasts benefits that can enhance longevity for both people and some pets. In its simplest form, tea is made from the leaves of the tea plant, Camellia Sinensis. It can be prepared in a variety of ways including steeping, boiling and pressing. Black, green, oolong and white teas are all made from the same plant, but they differ in the way they are processed. In humans, tea is known to help reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke. It can also help protect against diabetes and dental cavities as well as improve mental health. Tea is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols which help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Tea can also help improve digestion, reduce inflammation and boost the immune system. In particular, green tea has been found to have some of the highest levels of antioxidants of any type of tea, so it is a great choice. Tea is known to alleviate anxiety and can be relaxing, calming and soothing, while caffeinated tea is an ideal invigorating and energizing pick me up. Research has shown that tea can help improve mood, reduce inflammation and help reduce the symptoms of some chronic illnesses such as arthritis and asthma.

Herbal tea is an absolute no-go for cats, but many dogs, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs might enjoy small amounts of carefully selected, well-diluted and cooled herbal tea. Always opt for caffeine-free, so skip black, white and green teas since caffeine can be harmful for pets. Obviously, avoid any added flavor extracts, sugar, sweeteners or dairy products. In general, the more pure, organic and natural the ingredients, the better for all of us. My fur babies have enjoyed different combinations of rooibos (caffeine-free red tea), sencha (caffeine-free green tea) and herbal and tisanes including hibiscus, lavender and calendula/ marigolds. Other healthy herbs and flowers that can aid digestion and provide health benefits include chamomile, echinacea, red clover, nettle, rosemary, dandelion and sage. As the owner of the local tea business, Tea-lation!, I can recommend the following two herbal tea blends for both people and some pets: PT (Piedmont Triad) Herbal Tea, an all-organic and caffeine-free blend of spearmint, peppermint and lemon balm; and Waltz of the Flowers, an all-organic and caffeine-free chamomile, lavender, rose petals and rose buds herbal tea blend. In addition to enjoying the treat of these steeped and diluted teas, my pets also enjoy occasional nibbling on the loose, dried tea leaves. Tea has renowned health and longevity benefits for humans and may have several health benefits for pets when used with care and moderation. Always provide species-appropriate diets for your pets and clean, fresh water to maintain their well-being and health. If you ever have concerns about your pet’s diet or health, consult with a veterinarian for specific guidance.

WINS ALL AROUND! by L A U R A C Z E R W I N S K I Often, I read articles and Facebook posts asking families to “share their wins” for the week or what’s going well for them as they school at home. Many of these replies end up being game changers for others who read them. This month, I’ve compiled some of those general sentiments in a variety of subjects to share with you! 1. Having a hard day/session? Take a break! Go for a walk, have a snack and just talk or play a board game! You might even consider taking a look at your overall schedule. Make sure you plan breaks/time off every few weeks or at least have some fun field trips planned. 2. Is your child unmotivated to get their schoolwork done? Create a list of things to do for the day. (You can include “non school” items here, too.) Encourage them to get all the things on the list done in whatever order they choose. You can also try having your student do their assignments in small bite-sized sections. Another idea to try is to encourage some creativity. Have them make a mini movie, an idea board or invent a new comic character. Ask them what might get their creative juices flowing! 3. Squash morning sluggishness by keeping to a routine. Play a podcast or specific music during breakfast. Something to look forward to first thing in the morning can spark a little needed energy. Give them 15 minutes of time to do whatever they want after breakfast. It might be playing their favorite video game, building with Legos or catching up on a book they are reading. 4. Take some pressure off! Start dinner early in the day, so it is ready later on instead of stressing about having to take care of it when it is already late. Have ready-togo plans ready like videos to watch, books to read or educational coloring pages for days when you or your child isn’t feeling well. Revisit your schedule to see if making small changes can make a huge difference!

with meal prep or feeding the dog are all ways kids can contribute. Older kids can even be assigned areas of responsibility like collecting and disposing of all the recycling for the household. Taking ownership of tasks builds confidence as kids prepare for their futures! (And, having your kids help with these chores can ease the pressure on the parents of the house!) Overall, it’s important to realize that any win, large or small, can lead to meaningful change. Sometimes it’s change you didn’t even know you needed! Well friends, this was my last entry in the Simple Schooling at Home series. It is my sincere hope that even if you don’t school your kids at home, you found some tips here that were helpful and impactful. Just remember, no matter where your kiddos are schooled, always make the best of the time you have together. Want to keep the inspiration going? Learn by keeping in touch with other families that teach at home. Remember, if you don’t have a network to connect with, one of the easiest ways to get started is to join some local Facebook groups. Not only do many group members share their stories that can help ignite more ideas for your family, but these groups can also serve great resources for other topics you have questions about! Visit our exclusive Facebook group and create a post sharing your experiences! Scan the QR code here, or search for ‘LKN Magazine Readers’ on Facebook to join today!

5. Take a more immersive approach when learning about history. If you can, visit some historical sites in our area or plan to stop at one on your next family road trip. Try eating foods or wearing clothes from the time period you are learning about. Ask your kids questions about what they think people wondered about “back then” (whatever time period you are studying). 6. Help your kids learn how to do tasks that contribute to the overall upkeep of the family home. These life lessons can definitely be a win! Tasks like emptying the dishwasher, folding laundry, making the bed, helping *Note: ALWAYS refer to the NC laws and guidelines as shared and updated at ncadmin.nc.gov/public/home-school-information.

PASTORS DAREY & KAREN JOLLEY SHARE THEIR MISSION Thirty years ago, Pastors Darey and Karen Jolley say the Lord asked if they would be willing to radically change their lives for the sake of His people. More than willing to answer that call, Ambassadors to the Nations was founded. An international mission ministry based out of the Jolleys’ home church – Freedom Christian Center in Charlotte, NC – their work focuses on meeting both the physical and spiritual needs of the most impoverished communities in Central America and North America, through short-term mission projects such as establishing schools, churches and medical clinics. Getting to know the Jolleys and their heartfelt commitment is a true blessing! L K N : Since you established the ministry in 1992, you’ve done amazing work in Nicaragua, Mexico, the Philippines, Cuba and Nigeria. Have other areas been added? K A R E N : We are still active there, but also in the Congo, Cameroon, India, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Jamaica and in the United States in the Cherokee mountains. L K N : What inspires you most about the communities in these parts of the world? K A R E N : The areas we work in have so much poverty. We are called to help educate the children in our Christian schools, after-school programs and Bible training feeding programs in these countries. We want them to be productive people in their communities, as they grow up knowing the love of God. We’ve also built tiny homes in these countries for families living in shacks and cardboard – that is life-changing for them. L K N : What do you find most life-altering about working with children? K A R E N : The changes we have seen take place in their lives is worth it all. Many came to our programs sick – especially in the Congo – and now they are healthy. In Nicaragua, we have seen more than 800 students graduate from our schools and have gone on to universities to become doctors, lawyers, nurses, mechanics, teachers, pastors and missionaries. That is the best joy to see taking place! L K N : What other national organizations are you involved with? K A R E N : We work with a few other organizations, with Andrew Wommack Ministries being the main one. We also work with Redeeming Love Ministries in the Congo, Miskey Ministries in the Philippines, New Song Ministries in Nicaragua, and Movement of Faith in Mexico. L K N : How many ministry volunteers do you have locally? What are some ways our readers can contribute to your missionary work, volunteer or help spread the word?

60 | lkn-magazine.com

K A R E N : We have a mission headquarters in Charlotte, NC where our staff and volunteers come Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. We have around 15 to 18 who work each day and more when youth groups or other adult groups call with offers to help. We always need more volunteers to help package hygiene bags, toy bags and bags of new shoes, new clothing and new school supplies to ship to the countries we serve. A great way to help us spread the word is to invite us to share about our missions at your own church, school, Bible study or neighborhood group. We even have two awesome children’s books that inspire young people to get involved in missions: Princess Ava Jo and the Great Adventures of Poncho the Clown! L K N : Tell us about your Sponsorship Program for supporting an individual child? K A R E N : We currently have a sponsorship program for children in Nicaragua and Mexico for only $10 a month. That enables them to go to our schools or after school programs for free, where they are educated, fed and taught God’s love. Sponsors can give gifts to the children two or three times a year, and they receive a newsletter every month to keep up with what’s going on in their lives. We also ship Care Boxes to the children in these countries two or three times a year, and we encourage our local community to make up these shoebox-size boxes, filled with school supplies, hygiene items, new summer clothing, socks, toys and stuffed animals. These boxes go to children from age three up to 18 years of age and are often the only gifts these children receive throughout the year. Every included item must be new! Karen notes the group will be in Nicaragua during December for toy distribution, Mexico in January and Cuba in March – then back to Mexico in June and to Nicaragua again in August – as their ministry continues to flourish! Please visit the website ambassadorstothenations.com for more information on upcoming mission trips, or if you are interested in sponsoring a child in one of the countries the Jolleys serve. Karen and Darey love sharing their inspiration: “God has proven to us that nothing is impossible with Him! Greater things are still to be done!”

SMOKED SPIRAL HAM by TA N N E R J O H N S O N

There’s nothing like a slow cooked ham when the holidays roll around. This is a delicious recipe to feed a large crowd for a holiday party, a family gathering, or any occasion that you want to impress guests. Most of the spiral cut hams from the grocery store are pretty large so expect a lot of leftovers or have plenty of people to feed when you cook this! With this recipe I typically cook on a pellet smoker, so I can set it and forget it while preparing the rest of the food for the perfect holiday meal. But, you can also cook this on a low heat grill or even in your oven. • What you’ll want to get at the store is a Bone-In Spiral Cut ham. Depending on how many mouths you have to feed or leftovers you want - pick the right size ham: estimate about ¾-1lb per person. They come fully cooked so all you’re doing in the smoker (or cooking device of your choice) is reheating it, getting some smoke on it (if using a smoker), adding an awesome blend of seasonings, and covering in a sweet sauce to really take it to the next level. • Preheat cooker to 250° • Season ham all over with Spice and Tea Exchange® Cinnabar Smoke Spice Blend or if you can’t find this use your favorite pork seasoning/rub (think Sweet Heat seasoning that may have some cinnamon and brown sugar for the sweet and spices such as cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and/ or marjoram for example.) You could also make your own by combining a Cup of Brown Sugar, ½ tsp mustard

powder, ½ tsp cayenne pepper, ¼ tsp onion powder, 1 tsp paprika, and some cracked black pepper and salt to taste. • Place your ham in the cooker on a pan and let cook for 3-4 hours, and you’ll want the middle of the thickest part of the ham to read 140° when done. • Once your ham is temping around 130-135° it’s time to add the sauce. • For the sauce I love using a mixture of Texas Pete Honey Mustard and honey. Around 1.5 Cups of honey mustard and a few tablespoons of honey. If you’re not a big fan of honey/honey mustard you could also do a maple bourbon type of glaze. • Glaze the sauce all over the ham with a brush, and turn your cooker up higher (broil for 2-3 minutes in an oven) or 400-500° degrees in a smoker for a few minutes to set the glaze. • Pull the ham, let it rest 10 minutes before slicing. Slice a circle around the bone and it should easily fall apart, then slice through the ham along the seams which are the natural breaks (fat) in the ham.

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE

CHRISTMAS IN THE BAHAMAS by C H A R L I E S C H U L E R

CHRISTMAS IN THE BAHAMAS. NOW, THAT SOUNDED GOOD. MARIANNE AND I WERE LIVING ABOARD OUR 42’ SAILBOAT AT THE TIME, AND WE WERE LOOKING FOR A DESTINATION. THIS WAS IT.

We planned on leaving the Myrtle Beach Yacht Club when the cold front passed through, and the winds changed to northerly. Our goal was to sail south between the mainland and the Gulf Stream down to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This is a good place to wait for weather suitable for crossing the Gulf Stream. You don’t want the wind from the north while in the Gulf Stream. The stream is moving north, and the opposing wind makes the sea very rough. It also gave us the opportunity to stop in Stuart, Florida for a Seven Seas Cruising Association (SSCA) Gam. A Gam is a gathering of serious sailors where they swap sea stories. Their motto is to “Leave a Clean Wake” and to write about where they have been to make it easier for the next sailor to travel there. Bill and Simone Butler were sharing the story of how they survived 66 days afloat in a life raft. At the time, this was the longest anyone had survived in a raft. Their wooden sailboat got between a mother whale and her offspring. She became very unhappy and sank their sailboat. They were prepared for emergencies. They had their life raft and a grab bag which contained what the sailor believes to be essential for their survival. They went on to say that the first 20 days were not too bad because they were able to take some food with them, and they had a manual water maker which probably saved their lives. Nature had started another ecosystem under their life raft. At first, a moss started to form which attracted tiny fish; then the moss grew, and the fish did as well. Pretty soon, the bottom of the raft was covered, and larger fish started to come by. They were able to catch all the fish they wanted by hand. Simone said she wished she had brought soy sauce. They were adrift off the coast of Costa Rica for six days, and no one saw them. It is hard to be seen when the swells are 10-20 feet high. We were convinced that their positive attitude and his sense of humor is what saved them. We arrived in Nassau, Bahamas just before Christmas. Remembering that Jesus is the reason for the season, we decorated the boat. A few years back, Marianne’s stepdad had

70 | lkn-magazine.com

given us a ceramic Christmas tree, and this sat on the middle of our table. We also had ornaments hung around the cabin and a wreath on the hatch cover. It looked warm and had a Christmas feeling. To continue with this feeling, we decided to take a tour of the island to see how the Bahamians were celebrating Christmas. It was beautiful, and it reminded us of home. Then, someone told us that we really should watch the parade they have each year just after Christmas. It is called JUNKANOO. Wow, what a pleasant surprise it was! JUNKANOO comes from the John Canoe Festival which originated in the Bahamas around the 17th century as a masquerade. The slaves hid their faces with masks and costumes. They danced as they paraded along. The celebration continues today. The theme when we were there was the 10 plagues Moses brought to the Egyptian people through God’s commands. Such as locusts, frogs, lice, flies and so on. The rest of this story can be found in the Bible under Exodus 9 and 10. They did a wonderful job of portraying each plague. It was a wild party with music, the crowds were dancing and people were watching and cheering. And, it was cold. I know I tend to be cold but some of the participants didn’t have many clothes on, and I felt sorry for them. All these Christmas celebrations reminded me of my favorite Christmas experience. I guess I was three or four years old at the time. We lived in a four-story brownstone walk up in Brooklyn on the top floor. There was a skylight in the kitchen and no fireplace or chimney in the house. I asked my parents how Santa was going to come here. They assured me he would find a way. Sure enough, there were presents under a small tree when I woke up Christmas morning. My parents took me into the kitchen, and there was a newspaper on the table with the prints of two size 13 shoes. This was right under the skylight. I was in awe. Now, I wonder how Santa would have to get to the boat and if reindeer can swim. The spirit of Christmas has no boundaries, and your mind is your only limit. Merry Christmas, and know God loves you.

FLOTSAM OR JETSAM? by R O C K Y T H O M P S O N The other day, I was standing on our dock marveling at how there seemed to be more room than normal. It took me a few minutes to figure out that all that space existed because the big floating mat we usually have rolled up and bungee-corded to the dock was missing. I thought back for a moment and remembered that we had left it rolled out in the lake a day or two prior when the kids had been out for a sunset swim in their underwear.

young kids in search of a spot near my wife’s family in Charlotte. The bottom had dropped out of the rental market, so we were able to find an affordable place on the lake that March. We thought we’d stay for two weeks. We ended up staying for seven months, buying land and then building a house.

While we were staying at that very first house, a huge storm blew in and the docks were bobbing up and down all along our lakeshore. In the Usually, I pull it in and wrestle it into a roll soaking morning, there was a big black dock float sitting on our shore. I had no idea what it was, but I my clothes in the process, but I’d left it out for a noticed that our neighbors in the rental had an night assuming I’d handle it in the morning. I’m not sure what weather or waves blew through in old dock float propped up in their yard that they were using for target practice with their bow and the night, but that thing was gone. arrows. So, I thought it was another target of theirs that blew away in the storm. I told my neighbor John about the missing mat and he shared a few top-level legal perspectives I caught them down by the lake while they were on flotsam vs jetsam and ownership of things out and told them that their target had floated that wash up on your shore. For example, if I over to our yard, and I asked them if they wanted wake up in the morning and a 30-foot sailboat has washed up on my shore after a big storm, do my help to drag it back into their yard. He said something like, “No, that doesn’t belong to us.” I now own it? It’s a bit of a legal gray area. And, I was like, “No man, it’s identical to the one you’re blasting with arrows, it has to be yours.” He explained it to me in clear and simple terms, So, he told me the one they were shooting had and I immediately forgot everything. I looked it washed up on their shore during the last big up on the internet just now and discovered that “Flotsam and Jetsam” is the name of an American storm, so we should feel free to keep this one thrash metal band from Arizona, and that doesn’t that had washed up so we could shoot it, or do whatever we wanted to with it. We weren’t sure help me at all. what to do, so we left it sitting on the shore for a night. Another storm happened to blow in that We had a flotsam (or maybe jetsam) issue the night, and in the morning, it was someone else’s first time I came to Lake Norman. It was during flotsam (or jetsam) problem. the pandemic. We’d left New York with our two
