Developing the Mindset of Creating Change to Shape Your Future
BY MEGAN TAYLOR
Change is a constant force that shapes our lives, communities and the world around us. Yet, change can often feel daunting and overwhelming. Whether it’s personal or professional, creating an impactful change requires more than just action – it demands a specific mindset. This mindset isn’t about simply adapting to new circumstances; it’s about shaping those circumstances into a powerful mindset that will help change your path. This change-making mindset can be hard and difficult to achieve but can be done with the assistance of these tips below.
1. EMBRACE A GROWTH MINDSET
The foundation of creating meaningful change comes from the concept of a growth mindset, popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck. People with a growth mindset believe that abilities and intelligence are not fixed traits, but rather, qualities that can be developed through dedication and hard work. This perspective is critical for anyone aiming to create lasting change.
When you adopt a growth mindset, you stop viewing setbacks as failures and start seeing them as opportunities to learn and improve. This resilience allows you to navigate the inevitable challenges of change without losing momentum. Whether you’re looking to change your career, health or the way you interact with others, a growth mindset enables you to keep moving forward knowing that skills, insights and confidence will develop as you go.
2. BE WILLING TO CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO
Change often requires stepping outside your comfort zone and questioning the assumptions that have defined your reality. The willingness to challenge the status quo is essential for creating change. Change-makers seek new possibilities and better ways of doing things.
This mindset requires a mixture of curiosity and critical thinking. Instead of
accepting things as they are, ask yourself: Why does it have to be this way? What if there’s a better approach? Leaders and innovators are often those who ask uncomfortable questions, explore unconventional solutions and are unafraid to take risks. Cultivating this mindset means being open to the idea that the old ways of doing things may not be the best ways – and that improvement is always possible.
3. CULTIVATE PATIENCE AND PERSISTENCE
Creating change takes time. Too many people give up too soon, discouraged by early failures or slow progress. Successful change-makers understand that change is a long-term process. It requires patience, persistence and the ability to stay focused on the end goal. The key is to remain consistent, even when results are not immediately apparent. This mindset involves understanding that setbacks are part of the journey and that real, sustainable change often takes time to manifest.
4. FOSTER A SENSE OF PURPOSE
One of the most powerful driving forces behind meaningful change is a sense of purpose. When you have a clear understanding of why you are working toward a particular goal, the obstacles you encounter along the way become less intimidating. A strong sense of purpose helps you stay committed, even during tough times, because it aligns your actions with your values and passions.
This purpose-driven mindset is especially important when pursuing change that has a broader impact. Change-makers who are driven by purpose are more likely to stay motivated, inspire others and create a ripple effect that leads to greater change.
5. COLLABORATE AND BUILD SUPPORT
Effective change-making involves collaboration – whether it’s with colleagues, friends or community members. Surrounding yourself with supportive,
like-minded individuals amplifies your ability to create change. Together, you can share resources, exchange ideas and use collective strength to overcome challenges.
Collaboration fosters a diversity of perspectives. A mindset that values teamwork and community-building enables you to navigate challenges more effectively and increases the likelihood of success.
6. TAKE ACTION AND ADAPT ALONG THE WAY
While mindset is crucial, action is what ultimately drives change. But, effective action is not about rushing into the unknown without direction; it’s about being deliberate, thoughtful and willing to adjust course as needed. Changemakers take calculated risks, start small and refine their strategies as they learn from experience.
Adaptability is key. As you move forward, you may encounter new challenges or unforeseen obstacles. Those who are most successful in creating change are not rigid in their approach. They pivot when necessary, embrace feedback and remain flexible in their methods, all while staying focused on the end goal. Creating meaningful change requires a mindset of growth, resilience, curiosity and purpose. It’s a mindset that encourages questioning the status quo, embracing challenges and persisting through setbacks. It’s a mindset that recognizes the power of collaboration and takes action with flexibility and focus.
Whether you’re aiming to improve your own life or make a difference in the world, the way you think about change can be just as important as the actions you take. By cultivating the right mindset, you unlock your potential to shape the future in ways you may have once thought impossible. The power to create change is within all of us – what matters most is how we choose to approach it.

VILLAGE SQUARE ARCADE - The Newest Destination for Family Fun
WBY MARTIE EMORY
ith an eye on bringing the community together with some guaranteed fun, Bryan Wheelock and his partner, Bernie Bennett, launched a family oriented addition to their business, Village Square Tap House.
“When the business that previously occupied the space next to ours moved on, we brainstormed something unique to do with that space,” shares Bryan. “We settled on an arcade – but not just for the adults who visit the tap house (although it’s a great diversion), but for families to have fun together, as well.”
The two opened Village Square Arcade in July of 2024 after up-fitting a portion of the expanded space at Village Square Tap House from four pool tables, four dart boards and a small stage, to eight pool tables, 10 dart boards and a larger stage to support leagues and their live music venue.
“In the second round of up-fitting, we designed the arcade area – which has complete storefront exposure and its own entrance – but also added a second entrance from the tap house side, separating the two businesses,” adds Bryan. He also admits that with both himself and Bernie being “slightly aged,” neither knew what arcade games young adults and kids are
currently playing. Luckily, they had a friend “in the know” and developed a plan that would appeal to families and young adults, but still draws an older crowd, as well.
All ages are welcome at Village Square Arcade, maintaining that spirited community feel. Currently, the most popular games for kids are Dead Storm Pirates and Halo, followed by Air Hockey NASCAR, Motocross and the NBA basketball shooting games.
“Adults tend to gravitate towards one of our eight pinball machines, skee ball or air pong,” explains Bryan. “We added two smaller pool tables for the younger kids to get a feel for the game, too.”
As part of the early planning, we decided to offer package deals geared towards birthday parties for all ages, but also perfect for corporate team building events, Christmas and Halloween parties, class outings and even baby gender reveals.
“We can design the perfect package for any type of party, including unlimited pitchers of soda and pizzas made to order from Brick Oven Pizza, another local Clemmons business,” he says. “Drink packages for adult parties can also be supported by both the arcade and tap house sides.”
As the only arcade company in Clemmons, Lewisville or the immediate surrounding area outside of Winston-Salem, Village Square Arcade provides a personal level of customer service to all patrons.
“We do our best to ensure a good time is had by all,” adds Bryan, who also knows arcade games can be fickle – and a game being played one month may not be a popular game the next time you check in. Bryan and Bernie are currently in the process of switching out a few of the arcade games that have dwindled in popularity. They believe – like most hospitality business owners – that they survive off what the community will accept and enjoy!
“We also have what could be considered a Happy Hour every Sunday between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. where all games (except prize machines) can be played for half the credits,” Bryan adds.
As residents of Forsyth County for nearly 20 years – Bryan in Clemmons, Bernie in Winston- Salem – they feel they know the community well and have a good grasp on what makes for quality recreation for families of all shapes and sizes. Stop in with your kids soon, and enjoy learning a new game or two together!
Visit Village Square Arcade (and Village Square Tap House) at 6000 Meadowbrook Mall Court in Clemmons. Reach them at 336.727.3605 for party planning details, on Facebook at Village Square Arcade and on Instagram @village_square_arcade.
CHRIS PAUL
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN THE NBA FROM HOMETOWN HERO TO NBA SUPERSTAR
by CAROLYN SHORE-PETERSON
Chris Paul, Winston-Salem native and West Forsyth High School graduate, Class of 2003, is known to many as “CP3” and is an example of excellence and perseverance in the NBA. As he celebrates his 20 years in the league, his illustrious career is a testament to his skill, leadership and impact both on and off the court as a son, brother, husband, father and philanthropist.
A STAR IN THE MAKING
Chris grew up in Lewisville with his parents, Charles and Robin, and older brother, Charles “C.J.” Paul. Both Paul sons inherited their father’s love for sports, and Charles coached his sons on various football and basketball teams throughout their childhood.
“Early on, both of our sons showed an interest in sports, really excelling in basketball. Like most families with kids involved in sports, we spent a lot of time at practices and games; then came the high school years when Chris’ talent really became evident,” said Robin Paul, Chris’ mother.
While at West Forsyth High School, Chris quickly made a name for himself on the basketball court.
As a high school junior, Chris averaged 25 points, five assists and four steals per game, showing his potential as a dynamic player. However, it was in his senior year that he truly shined on the court. Chris averaged an unheard of 30.8 points, eight assists and six steals per game. With his success on the court, off the court, the Paul family faced an unimaginable loss of his grandfather during Chris’ record senior year. Following his grandfather’s murder, Chris dedicated a game to him and, in that game, put up amazing stats with a 61-point game which was the age of his grandfather at the time of his death. This one game, and all it meant to Chris and his family, brought Chris national attention.
COLLEGIATE SUCCESS AT WFU
After graduating from high school, Chris decided to stay close to home, committing to Wake Forest University. He made an immediate impact and was named ACC Rookie of the Year, leading the Demon Deacons to a 21-10 record. In his sophomore season, Chris continued to dominate the court, and Wake Forest rose to the number one spot in national rankings, solidifying his reputation as one of the best point guards in college basketball.
THE ROAD TO THE NBA
After two successful years at Wake Forest, Chris declared for the 2005 NBA Draft, changing his and his family’s life forever. His all-around ability made him a top prospect and, on June 28, 2005, the New Orleans Hornets selected him with the fourth overall pick. The hometown hero was on his way to becoming a legend in the NBA.
THE FOUNDATIONS OF A LEGENDARY CAREER
Chris wasted little time proving his decision to go pro was the right one, earning the NBA Rookie Of the Year award with an average of 16.1 points, 7.8 assists and 2.2 steals during his first season with New Orleans. His leadership on the court was the foundation for a career that would have All-Star appearances, record-breaking performances and a reputation as one of the best ever!
“It was surreal seeing Chris play in the NBA. After watching him play on teams in the Winston-Salem area, then at West Forsyth and Wake Forest, to then see him in the NBA, it was a great feeling as a dad,” Charles, Chris’ dad, commented.
STAYING TRUE TO YOUR ROOTS
Over the years, Chris has played for seven teams, currently playing point guard for the San Antonio Spurs. But, even with all his fame and endorsements, Chris Paul has used his celebrity to make a difference in the community where he got his start to help those who know him as CP3 or the player at West Forsyth High School who made it to the big time!
Family and community have always been at the heart of Chris Paul, and he has gone above and beyond in attending to both.
In 2011, as Chris was making his mark on the NBA, he wed his high school sweetheart, Jada Crowley, and they now have two children, Christopher and Camryn. But, even with a busy career and family life, Chris wanted to give back to those who have supported him from the early days.
The CP3Foundation, officially known as the Chris Paul Family Foundation, was established in 2005 with a vision to positively influence individuals and communities, emphasizing three key areas: Education, with support for students through scholarships and literacy programs, Health, promoting wellness initiatives and providing underserved communities with resources and Empowerment, enabling youth to achieve their potential through leadership and mentorship programs.
“The Chris Paul Family Foundation has provided Thanksgiving meals for families, toys each Christmas for underprivileged children, an endowed scholarship to WFU for a Forsyth County basketball player each year and, in memory of Chris’ grandfather, Club 61 is a program where we bring children in from all over and teach them leadership skills; it’s important to us as a family to give back to our community,” Robin stated.
Chris’ commitment to giving back goes beyond financial contributions, and he actively participates in many of the foundation’s events, bringing awareness to the communities he serves.
BEYOND THE COURT
At 39, Chris Paul continues to remain a dominant player on the court. This past December, Chris Paul was named the #2 All-Time Assist Leader in the NBA for his 20 years of playing. Along with his talent on the San Antonio Spurs, Chris is also using his vast experience to mentor the next generation of players. As Chris prepares to celebrate his 20 years in the NBA, he has transcended the game that he loves so much and has become an icon not only as a player, but in his off-court philanthropy, as well. Chris Paul’s story is one of using a God-given talent and having determination to pursue greatness in a sport. Chris Paul and his legacy, on and off the court, will forever be remembered and celebrated.
FORSYTH MEDICAL SUPPLY Celebrates 55 Years as Your One Stop Shop for Healthcare Needs
BY DEBBIE LINVILLE PHOTOS BY JODIE BRIM CREATIVE
Forsyth Medical Supply, North Carolina’s most trusted supplier of high-quality medical products, assistive furniture, and equipment turns 55 this year! From its humble beginnings in 1970, this family-owned and operated business has continued to evolve and expand across the decades by staying abreast of cutting-edge products and technologies. Forsyth Medical Supply is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has consistently received the Readers’ Choice Award in recognition of their unbeatable service and customer satisfaction.
HONORING OUR ROOTS
Scott Johnson opened Forsyth Ostomy Supply in 1970. As the sole proprietor, he wore many hats - sourcing products, managing inventory, bookkeeping, sales, marketing, and on and on. His original 1900 South Hawthorne Road location was small in square footage, but chock-full of an impressive selection of medical supplies to support ostomates (individuals who undergo surgery to create an opening in the abdomen to divert the flow or urine or feces). With the plethora of ostomy accessories available today, it is hard to imagine that not so long ago, inner tubes, tuna cans, and bread bags were used to catch the waste, while aspirin tablets and peppermint extracts were used to mask the odor. The first disposable stoma bags came on the scene just about the time Scott hung his shingle, and Forsyth Ostomy Supply was immediately known as “the place to go” for the very best ostomy bags and accessories available in the market. Over time, Scott began to bring in more diverse home medical supplies, mobility and support systems, durable medical equipment, wound care products, and a host of other specialty items that were frequently needed on the heels of a hospital discharge, or an injury/ illness that required medical equipment for at-home care. This expansion brought about several significant changes:
• new name: Forsyth Medical Supply (established in 1997)
• larger physical space: 3041 Trenwest Drive - conveniently located near Winston Salem’s three hospitals
• additional staff: hand-picked and expertly trained to match customer needs with the best medical supplies
“Forsyth Medical Supply is a community staple and to this day, long-standing customers who are not aware Scott Johnson recently passed away, still ask for him.”
- Brenna Chandler, General Sales Manager
“Really kind staff, worked with me to keep my grandmother comfortable after leaving the hospital with no delays on delivery.” - Google Review, 2024
EMBRACING THE NOW
In keeping with Johnson’s mission to continually provide customers with the highest rated medical supplies, his inventory increased, and so did the need for more square footage. As luck would have it, a considerably larger space (more than doubling the square footage) right next door became available in 2021, and Forsyth Medical Supply wasted no time in packing up, moving over, and posting their new storefront sign at 3033 Trenwest Drive. As any successful business owner knows, staying up to date with industry trends and technological advancements is essential for success in today’s competitive, fast-paced world. Forsyth Medical Supply customers have access to more in stock options than any other medical supply company in the area. The plethora of choices can be overwhelming for customers, but the knowledgeable and empathetic staff are skilled at letting clients know the “just right” item for their specific need, taking the guess work out of the buying/renting process. Unlike ordering merchandise online, customers have the ability to ask questions, receive demonstrations, or try medical equipment out before purchasing and can leave with the item(s) in hand. For products that need to be assembled, delivered, and set up, Forsyth Medical Supply provides that service as well. As Brenna Chandler (General Salem Manager) shared, “Forsyth Medical Supply customers have the very best products at their fingertips, and they receive outstanding service from our trained staff who participate in continual education to stay on top of the newest, safest, most in-demand products and innovative medical equipment available. This combination is what sets us apart from our competitors.”
Forsyth Medical Supply boasts:
• 2 repair technicians
• 3 certified compression garment fitters
• 8 highly trained staff well versed in the breadth of the inventory
“I would definitely recommend as they are way more responsive as a small business than the typical medical supply company.” - Google Review, 2024
PLANNING FOR TOMORROW
Forsyth Medical Supply has proudly served clients throughout the Triad and surrounding areas for over five decades. Brenna discussed that overall, stand-alone medical supply companies for home health care is a dying trade. Glass half full, she sees this as an opportunity to adapt to the changing market and expand to reach even more communities and cities. Granted, there are challenges within the industry to overcome (e.g. competition from online retailers, government reimbursement challenges, etc.), but an aging population and an increased desire to age in place gives Brenna every reason to believe additional locations are a step in the right direction. Many of the Forsyth Medical Supply customers travel great distances because they do not have access to the needed medical supplies closer to home. Making high-quality medical supplies, assistive furniture, and equipment available to a wider radius of customers is an attainable and worthy goal!
Forsyth Medical Supply is honored to serve clients throughout Winston-Salem, Clemmons, Kernersville, Statesville, Mooresville, Mount Airy, Pilot Mountain, Oak Ridge, and Summerfield, NC. Visit the showroom at 3033 Trenwest Drive, Winston-Salem, 336-768-5512, and online at Forsythmedicalsupply.com. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Smoked Cheerwine Pulled Pork
For the LOVE of
SPONSORED BY CASUAL FURNITURE WORLD
by BRIAN JARED Instagram handle @Winstonsalem_nc_bbq
Pit Master Tip:
There are a lot of different ways you can smoke pulled pork. Low and slow is the easiest method, in my opinion. You can use a charcoal smoker, pellet smoker or other options for open fire cooking. The key is getting it to an internal temperature of 205 degrees, so it will easily shred. Letting it rest for a minimum of three hours helps the pork stay moist.
Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 10-12 hours
Yields: 1 (9-10 pound) pork butt
Ingredients:
1 pork butt
2T BBQ rub
1 cup of apple juice
1 cup of Worcestershire sauce
Apple cider vinegar for spritz
First, set your smoker to around 200-225 degrees. While the smoker is heating up, season your pork butt with your favorite BBQ rub.
I smoke this low and slow overnight, but you can do it during the day, as well. Spritz the pork butt every hour with apple cider vinegar to keep it moist.
Once the pork butt reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Pull it off and place it in an aluminum pan. Wrap with foil and put it back on the smoker with apple juice and Worcestershire sauce. I pull it at an internal temperature of 205 degrees.
Wrap in a towel and place in a cooler. Let it rest for a minimum of three hours. This allows the juices to redistribute back into the meat. I made a sandwich and topped it with coleslaw and Cackalacky Cheerwine BBQ sauce.
I smoked this on my new Big Green Egg over lump charcoal. I love the quality of this smoker. It holds heat very well, there are a lot of different accessory options to choose from and it is easy to move around. You can get all their grills from Casual Furniture World in Winston-Salem or Greensboro. They carry the entire line of accessories you need, Big Green Egg rubs and Cackalacky BBQ sauce.
CAPS OF HOPE: Clara’s Story
by DEBBIE LINVILLE
Meet Clara Hardy, an 8th grader at Arts Based School in Winston-Salem. She is a creative, kind, intelligent, strong and generous 13-year-old who has beautifully demonstrated what it means to shine brightly in the face of the most difficult life experiences imaginable. When I think of Clara, I think of miracles. I think of a courageous warrior. I think of resilience personified. I first met Clara in the spring of 2011 in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Brenner Children’s Hospital when she was just a few weeks old. Clara was accompanied by an entourage of medical personnel and myriad monitors, tubes and wires; and yet, amid the flurry of activity, she slept soundly in the safety of her mother’s arms. I walked in on a good moment – there had been and would continue to be many scary, challenging moments, hours and days across the 78 days she spent fighting for her life.
“I have to take risks to meet a challenge.” - Clara CDH
Chrissy and Robert Hardy entered their 18-week gender reveal appointment giddy with excitement, but the exhilaration of the news that Baby Girl Hardy would soon make her debut was quickly shattered when the ultrasound revealed an abnormality the doctor suspected was a herniated diaphragm. A follow up visit days later confirmed the worst. She had a severe CDH (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia) – a birth defect that occurs in one of every 2,500 births where the baby’s diaphragm fails to close properly, leaving a large hole inside that allows organs to migrate from the abdomen to the upper chest, severely restricting the growth and development of the lungs. Chrissy and Robert were told that their daughter’s entire stomach was in her chest cavity, which also displaced her heart – another serious concern. It would be extremely complex to treat, requiring surgical repair soon after birth and a long course of intensive care. Depending on the severity of the defect, it could be fatal. As Chrissy shared in a blog post that day, “We are reeling from the news. It’s hard to believe how much we already love her and how much our hearts are breaking.”
“I was born with a condition called congenital diaphragmatic hernia and spent the first three months of my life in the hospital.” - Clara
CLARA MAE
Like many expectant parents, Chrissy and Robert poured over baby name options. They wanted a name as special as their unborn daughter and one that encompassed all they hoped and desired for her. She already sported a strong last name that would serve her well through all of the devastatingly hard parts of this life. Hardy – capable of enduring hardship; requiring great physical courage. Clara means bright and clear. Mae means beloved. As Chrissy said, “I love the way it [Clara] sounds when we say it and can’t wait to whisper it into her ear.” At 5:07 p.m. on March 23, 2011, Clara Mae Hardy (all 8lbs, 4oz of her) entered the world and tried her name on for size – it fit perfectly! “Hers was not an easy start to life outside the womb.” Chrissy and Robert were able to hear her soft cries for a few brief moments before, “Clara was whisked away to be intubated, ventilated and stabilized in the Forsyth (Novant) NICU before the Brenner’s transport team took her to her temporary home in the Baptist (Atrium) NICU.” The marathon commenced. (Blog post, Chrissy)
“My life’s challenges never stop me from doing things and going places.” - Clara
ECMO
Clara was not responding favorably to the treatments meant to increase the function of her heart and lungs, and the medical team made the decision to put Clara on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) – a heart and lung bypass machine. Whereas a ventilator moves air in and out of the lungs when a patient is unable to get enough oxygen on their own, an ECMO circulates blood through a machine to remove carbon dioxide and add oxygen, allowing the heart and lungs an opportunity to rest and get stronger. It was a scary option because it was a last resort treatment – most babies who did not survive CDH spent time on ECMO. As Clara’s parents wisely realized, it was also a beautiful option because it kept Clara alive and gave her the opportunity to heal and recover and “store up for fighting the battles she still had
ahead of her.” For Robert and Chrissy, ECMO spelled HOPE. And, after 22 days on ECMO, Clara was well enough to return to the NICU – one step closer to going home!
“I still have a scar, and I know that it means I have overcome something hard, and it makes me stronger.” - Clara
REHERNIATION
When Clara turned four, she began presenting symptoms that aligned with a reherniation of the diaphragm. A repair surgery would be necessary and, while it was not as serious as her initial repair (and no ECMO this time), it was still major surgery. Gratefully, it could be done laparoscopically which increased the tedious, time intensive nature of the repair, but it would make Clara’s recovery much easier. As with the first surgery when she was just eight days old, the CDH roller coaster ride on the other side of surgery was full of highs and lows. Clara’s pain was intense and so were the pain management medications; nasal cannulas were required for oxygen support, her breathing was shallow and her heart rate was high but, all in all, she was progressing as the doctors expected on the 24-hour post-op timeline. It was the familiar two steps forward, one step back CDH dance for a couple of days; and five days later, Clara waved goodbye to the children on the rooftop playground and her medical team and headed home.
“I distinctly remember the playground, enclosed on the roof where I went every day and, eventually, I made it up the play structure! I overcame a great physical challenge, and I realized I could do anything I put my mind to.” - Clara
HEARTBREAK
Clara’s world was knocked completely off course in the summer of 2023 with the news that it was her beloved mother who would be the one battling for her life this time. After a couple of weeks feeling “less than,” Chrissy’s symptoms presented with a vengeance. A visit to the ED was warranted, and bloodwork not only revealed a case of COVID but that she had “basically no platelets or hemoglobin and the white and red blood cells were behaving in ways to indicate leukemia.” (Chrissy’s Blog post, 6/1/2023). She was immediately transferred to the Cancer Center at Baptist Hospital where a bone marrow biopsy confirmed that she had Acute Myeloid Leukemia. With Robert, Clara, Eloise (Clara’s younger sister) and Sweet Mama (Chrissy’s mom) as her biggest cheerleaders, Chrissy was committed to fight hard! She was told AML was treatable and curable – there was every reason to hope. Everyone who knew Chrissy was 100% confident she would do whatever it took for however long it took to reign victorious. As Chrissy said, “I WILL DESTROY IT!” At the two-week mark, a second bone marrow biopsy revealed that the chemotherapy was not working, and a more aggressive chemo plan was in order. “The goal is still cure and cure is still possible,” Chrissy shared. She fought hard and clung to every hope even as she took her final breath on June 20th, 2023 when “Chrissy left this world peacefully, surrounded by overwhelming love.” (Blog post, Robert).
“My story is not simple, and my life has not gone as planned; but I have made it through, and it has made me stronger.” - Clara
CAPS FOR NICU BABIES
Clara has been involved in service projects across the years for as long as she can remember, helping those in need and brightening their day. She is an avid reader, inquisitive, lover of nature, incredible writer like her mother (Chrissy was my graduate student a long time ago, so I know this for sure), physically fearless, loving, selfless and social. She has never met a stranger. At the recent Ardmore Art Walk, Clara set up a booth on the sidewalk (in front of her art teacher’s home) to sell items she had made – earrings and necklaces, notecards boasting gorgeous photos by Clara and crocheted items. I was not surprised to learn Clara taught herself to crochet from a YouTube video. This teenager is smart! She saw an opportunity to use her crocheting talent to help spread love and encouragement to the NICU babies and their parents by making tiny caps – a way to play “dress up” when the top of the head is about the only part of the infant’s body free from life-saving/life-giving apparatuses. Wires, IVs, nasal cannulas, lines and tubes are something Clara is familiar with, and she knows firsthand how impactful it is to be the recipient of a kind gesture by someone who understands exactly what you are going through. Clara was given generous donations from passersby to purchase yarn to make more caps – lots and lots of caps for the NICU babies. Word spread across the neighborhood, and throughout the day, Clara was continually asked, “Are you the NICU baby cap maker?” YES! I can only imagine there will be plenty of smiles and a few tears of gratitude from those anxious NICU parents when they learn the tiny cap of hope on their baby’s head was lovingly made by Clara, a former NICU/PICU baby who defied the odds with her spirit of tenacity and strong desire to fight for her life – and she won!
“I’m making hats for babies that have been hospitalized for various reasons. I was born with CDH. Any tips for yarn are gratefully accepted. Thank you. Love, Clara”

Swift Performance are the most precise in the world, allowing us to accurately measure speed and agility for testing and monitoring.”
RSP also uses GymAware, the gold standard in velocity-based training, to measure the speed, acceleration and power of our exercises to provide a more specific program to the athlete’s sport. Our EzeJump Mat from Swift Performance, measures jump height, ground contact time and rate of force development within any type of jump. Most recently, RSP invested in a ShredMill. Not to be confused with a traditional treadmill, the ShredMill is a self-powered speed training system that helps athletes improve speed and has consistently produced the fastest athletes at the NFL Combine for the past five years.
“It’s about creating personalized programs that help athletes improve physically, mentally and emotionally. As we enter 2025, we’re excited to offer even more ways for athletes to enhance their performance while focusing on injury prevention and recovery,” said Mash.
The expanded offerings enhance the program’s already-world class speed and agility training, strength conditioning and mobility work. From basketball and soccer to volleyball and other high-performance sports, RSP serves athletes across various disciplines, providing the tools and coaching necessary to succeed.

“Our mission is to remove financial barriers that prevent people from participating in sports and fitness activities,” explains RISE Development Director Dawn Creason. “The RISE Community Fund allows us to give back to the community in meaningful ways, ensuring that everyone can experience the physical, mental and social benefits of staying active.”
Through partnerships with local businesses, donors and organizations, the foundation provides financial assistance for sports league fees, fitness programs and more. PRACTICING
NURTURING NEW NORMS:
BY TARYN JEREZ
Each month, this series introduces fun and impactful healthy habits to help families with kids and teens prioritize physical, mental and spiritual well being – fostering a lifestyle of shared growth and lifelong wellness. Healthy habits built together are the ones that last a lifetime.
Gratitude is transformative and, when the practice of it becomes a habit in our lives, it is proven to strengthen positive outlooks while connecting us more deeply to relationships and our priorities in life. When the world around us can seem unpredictable and chaotic at times, gratitude is what helps ground us to what matters most and how to find the light in the dark.
WHY GRATITUDE MATTERS IN RAISING HAPPY, PRESENT KIDS
Most adults agree that the pressure of growing up in today’s world carries with it a different set of stress and risk that simply wasn’t present in their own experiences during youth. The pressures of social media-driven peer comparison, demanding school schedules, extracurricular commitments, real-world challenges and other common stressors are contributing to a seriously troubling rise in depression, eating disorders and suicidal thoughts among children and teenagers.
Introducing the practice of gratitude is proven to improve mental health by promoting resilience and reducing stress as well as anxiety. Parents have an opportunity to lay the groundwork for better emotional intelligence and grounding tools for their kids to utilize into adulthood.
MAKING GRATITUDE FUN & IMPACTFUL
Adopting different gratitude techniques can help define their personal healing and emotional regulation as they go through life. When kids are given space to recognize what feels authentic for themselves when it comes to practicing gratitude, that’s where the real difference comes in. Explore different activities, conversations and habits around gratitude, so your children can have visibility to different practices and see what they connect to most.
Here are a few simple ideas to nurture the new norm of practicing gratitude this month:
#1 FAMILY GRATITUDE JAR
Grab an old mason jar or another container and place it in a common area of the home. Be sure to leave small slips of paper and a pen or colored marker nearby. Encourage your family to participate in adding moments or things they are grateful for throughout the week by writing them out on the slips of paper and putting them inside the jar. You can choose to share these at the end of each month or quarter!
#2 GRATITUDE WALKS
Incorporating movement into your gratitude practice can be helpful to eliminate feelings of awkwardness while allowing for a change of scenery to spark inspiration. Set a schedule for a gratitude walk each week for the whole family where you encourage sharing small things they are grateful for as you walk. This could be the beautiful weather, a bird song they hear nearby or something that happened at school earlier that day.
#3 DINNERTIME GRATITUDE TALKS
Simplicity is key for some families, and creating a small gratitude sharing moment at the dinner table each evening may be the key to forming a habit. Before everyone is excused from the table and ready to start cleaning up, go around and share one thing for which each of you is feeling grateful. You could let the kids create a theme or category for the evening and answers would pair with it.
CREATING PRACTICES THAT LAST A LIFETIME
A shared goal from parents and caregivers is to give the children in our lives the best chance at a fulfilling life. When you introduce the practice of gratitude, it's not about forcing kids to be grateful, it’s about shifting their perspective in ways that foster well being.
As you begin adopting small practices into your family's routine each week, concentrate on the tiny moments of reflection and connection. Focus on slowly building these practices into a habit between yourself, your children and the things you are grateful for and, over time, you’ll see not only the benefits for your family but the second nature of this habit come into place, as well.
VFamily Dreams: Crafting Your Vision Board for 2025
BY SHERIDAN C. WATKINS
ision boards are often seen as an activity for individual goal setting and motivation, especially for the new year ahead. However, families can also benefit and bond from it because it’s a powerful way to unite under shared aspirations and values. This can be for families in all of life’s stages, those with younger or older children, and you can keep it within the immediate household or branch out to include more relatives. It all depends on your collective goals and how the family wants to come together this year.
You can create a vision board for vacation, health, financial, philanthropic and any other goals you might have. Once you decide what it will be, beautify it with traditional or high-tech methods that capture your family’s unique spirit and dreams for 2025.
WHY MAKE A FAMILY VISION BOARD?
A family vision board is a fun way to align your goals, highlight what you value and keep desired accomplishments top of mind. It helps each member feel included and gives everyone something to look forward to throughout the year. If you create a vision board the traditional way, usually with poster boards, markers and magazine cutouts, your goals can be prominently displayed in your home as a daily reminder. But, what if you want it to be different this year?
UNORTHODOX VISION BOARD IDEAS
If you want to make a vision board more memorable or include others outside of your household, here are some innovative approaches:
Digital Vision Boards: Use apps like Canva or Pinterest to create a virtual vision board that family members can contribute to from anywhere. Set up a shared board where everyone uploads images, quotes and goals. This could be great for engaging older children or long distance families who want to collaborate.
Thematic Boards: You can choose one theme to solely focus on as a family for the year. Travel, enhancing the home, local activities or trying new restaurants are just a few ideas. You can include photos of the destinations or items you want to explore together.
Texture and Dimension: This is great for a creative family. Add depth by incorporating objects like fabric swatches, dried flowers or small keepsakes. For example, if a goal is to redecorate the living room, include fabric samples or paint chips.
Flexible Whiteboard Vision Boards: If you’re a dynamic family that likes to go with the flow, you can opt for a pegboard or dry erase board where you can swap out photos or update goals throughout the year. Be sure to start with something this month and include sections for monthly or quarterly achievements to keep everyone motivated even if your plans adjust.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Set the Mood: Gather everyone for a cozy vision board session with music and snacks to encourage creative brainstorming.
PUT YOUR HEADS TOGETHER:
Discuss questions like:
1. What do we want to achieve as a family this year?
2. What fun experiences do we want to have?
3. How can we support each other’s individual goals?
Collect Materials: Gather supplies based on your chosen format – magazines, digital tools, craft items or boards.
Build and Display: It doesn’t matter how long it takes, just commit to finishing the project. Work together to arrange your vision board and display it prominently when it’s finished. If you create a digital vision board, a good way to remember it is to keep it visual on your phone or computer with screenshots. The effectiveness of a vision board works when you put it somewhere you come often.
GET STARTED, TOGETHER
Creating a family vision board is more than just setting goals; it’s about celebrating your shared journey and strengthening your bond. Dream big, get creative and watch your vision come to life in 2025!

Need Indoor Activity Ideas This Winter?
Here Are 9 the Entire Family Will Love
BY SUZY FIELDERS
Winter is one of those tricky seasons for parents. Sure, the snow is a lot of fun, but here in North Carolina, there isn’t much of it. For the most part, it’s simply cold and sometimes rainy. I am not a fan of cold weather. While we take occasional walks to get some fresh air, most of our winter is spent indoors.
This winter, I have two toddlers and a teenager, and will need lots of ways to keep everyone entertained. I put together this fun list of indoor activities that is customizable for all ages and family needs. Enjoy and stay warm!
GAME NIGHTS
This one is great for slightly older kids, typically four and up, but provides tons of family fun. Take turns each game night allowing a different family member to pick that night’s game. You can also add your own twists to classic games. Growing up, my sister and I loved when my mom incorporated real candy for each character on Candy Land.
CRAFTS
One of the best things about craft time is it is easily customizable for the age. There are so many simple craft ideas online for toddlers up to more complex ones for teenagers and adults. You can even put together craft boxes or kits for your kids that have a mix of supplies with which they can create their own craft.
TRAMPOLINE PARKS
If you need to get out of the house but want to stay indoors, visiting a trampoline park is a great idea. We have a few in Forsyth County as well as some options outside of the area. If you have younger kids like me, you will love toddler times at places like Airbound Trampoline Park, which is for six and under only. These are also great places for kiddos to get out all that energy!
THEMED MOVIE NIGHTS
Level up your movie night by making it themed around that night’s movies. You can create snacks, meals, desserts and beverages that match the theme. Like game nights, let each family member have a turn choosing a themed movie night. There are so many great ideas you can find on Google or Pinterest to help get your creative juices flowing!
COOK OR BAKE
Turn baking a dessert or cooking dinner into a fun activity. Assign each family member a task or two and let them be in charge of that. You can even sign up for cooking classes as a family. There’s a lot of learning charcuterie classes available both online and in-person.
PICNIC INDOORS
My oldest daughter always loved when we would picnic inside on cold and/or rainy days. It’s such a simple thing to do but is really fun. Grab your picnic basket and load it up, then spread out a blanket on the floor and enjoy your indoor picnic.
HOT CHOCOLATE BAR
Whether you want to add something special to a meal or movie night, creating a hot chocolate bar is sure to be a hit. You can put out different kinds of hot chocolates and toppings. Some fun toppings to consider for your hot chocolate bar are marshmallows, candy canes, crushed peppermint, chocolate chips and whipped cream. You can even put out a variety of cookies for dunking in the hot chocolate.
CHILDREN’S MUSEUMS
Another great option to stay indoors but get out of the house, is visiting children’s museums. The new Kaleideum has something to do for all ages. There are also many places that are a short drive from Winston-Salem, like the Greensboro Science Center or Nido & Mariana Qubein Children’s Museum.
FORTS
Finally, another simple but fun indoor activity is building a fort. You can keep it simple and just use play spaces you already have like a castle and simply add pillows and blankets. Or go all out and create a more intricate fort using pillows, blankets, furniture and boxes!
BUILDING SKILLS AND BREAKING BARRIERS
Mixxer Community Makerspace, a nonprofit organization in the heart of Winston-Salem, is more than just a workshop – it’s a hub for creativity, collaboration and inclusivity. As a community workshop and open artist studio, Mixxer provides local artists, craftspersons, tinkers, hobbyists and other creatives a community in which they can thrive. Through membership, individuals and families can access workshops, studios and equipment, with free tool training to help them get started. In addition to its programming for adults, Mixxer also offers youth, teen and family focused classes that inspire learners of all ages to explore new skills and passions.
At the core of Mixxer’s mission – growing a creative community that provides equitable access to tools, tech and knowledge regardless of experience or background – is the Artist and Craftsperson Development Series and Artist Residency Programs. These programs are for local artists and craftspersons, empowering them to elevate their craft while connecting with others in the creative community.
THE ARTIST AND CRAFTSPERSON DEVELOPMENT SERIES
The Artist and Craftsperson Development Series (ACDS) serves as a launchpad for local talent, offering educational workshops, collaborative meetups and professional development resources to help artists build sustainable careers. Sessions like “How to Craft Your Artist Statement,” “Building a Local Network,” and “Budgeting for Life on an Irregular Income” equip participants with practical tools to navigate the art world.
In addition to individual growth, ACDS strengthens the broader creative community by pooling resources, addressing shared challenges and fostering collaboration. This initiative reflects Mixxer’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, ensuring that everyone, regardless of background or experience, has a place in the creative ecosystem.
ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAMS: SUPPORTING GROWTH AND COMMUNITY
At the heart of Mixxer’s commitment to fostering creativity is its Artist Residency Program. Designed to support emerging and established artists, these residencies provide participants with the time, space and resources needed to grow their craft. Artist residencies are immersive opportunities for creatives to deepen their skills, explore new techniques and engage with the community in meaningful ways.
Mixxer’s residencies go beyond personal growth; they are also designed to enrich the organization and its community. Artists contribute to Mixxer by offering instruction, supporting public programs and inspiring others through workshops and collaborative projects. This dual purpose – supporting individual development while expanding organizational capacity – helps ensure we grow a successful and sustainable art community well into the future.
The Women and Gender Expansive Residencies in Metalworking and Woodworking are examples of Mixxer’s efforts to make traditionally exclusive knowledge more accessible. By opening the doors of the metal and wood shops to women and genderexpansive individuals, Mixxer helps shift expertise in these fields which have historically been dominated by men. These residencies are designed to not only cultivate technical skills across multiple mediums, but also to foster confidence and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in these crafts
A SPACE FOR EVERYONE
Mixxer Community Makerspace shows us what can happen when creativity and community come together. Whether through memberships, public classes or specialized programs like the Artist and Craftsperson Development Series, Mixxer ensures that everyone – regardless of age, experience or background – has the opportunity to create, connect and grow.
For more information on memberships, programs and classes, or upcoming events, visit wsmixxer.org and join the movement to empower creativity in Forsyth County.
Dogwood Trees and Other NC Things
Here's to the land of the long leaf pine, The summer land where the sun doth shine, Where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great, Here's to "Down Home," the Old North State!
- A toast adopted by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1957
The flowering dogwood is the official state flower of North Carolina. The early spring bloom of the dogwood tree was designated as the state flower in 1941. The state tree of North Carolina is the pine which was designated as such in 1963.
Dogwood trees are native to North Carolina and grow best in the filtered light of larger hardwood or pine trees.
There are many species of dogwood trees, including the Cornelian cherry, which has yellow blooms and edible sourcherry-type fruit, and the Kousa dogwood, which has yellowishgreen flowers in spring and pinkish-red berries in summer.
MORE FUN FACTS ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA:
Nickname: The Tar Heel State Statehood: 1789; 12th State Population: 10.8 Million Capital: Raleigh
Biggest City: Charlotte State Bird: Cardinal
HISTORY
The earliest people to live in what is now North Carolina were hunters and gatherers at least 10,000 years ago. Over the years, many Native American tribes called the area home, including the Cherokee, Woodland and Mississippian tribes.
Europeans first came to North Carolina in the 1500s, and it became the 12th colony in 1789, just after America declared its independence from Great Britain. North Carolina seceded from the country on May 20, 1861. It was one of 11 states that made up the Confederate States of America, fighting against the Union during the Civil War.
WHY’S IT CALLED THE “TAR HEEL” STATE?
North Carolina got its nickname, the Tar Heel State, because workers here used to sell tar, pitch and turpentine from the state's longleaf pine trees to be used in wooden ships. Also, legend has it that some British soldiers were slowed down when they stepped in sticky North Carolina tar during the Revolutionary War.
GEOGRAPHY AND LANDFORMS
North Carolina is south of Virginia, east of Tennessee, north of South Carolina and west of the Atlantic Ocean. Traveling across North Carolina, visitors can see three unique regions defined by three different landscapes.
The Appalachian Mountains, the largest mountain range in the eastern United States, cover the state’s western region with some peaks rising more than a mile above sea level!
BY KAREN COOPER
Journey to the middle of the state to find the Piedmont region. High and flat, this plateau sits between the mountain and coastal plain regions.
Just a few hours further east and you’re at the beach! The eastern region is called the coastal plain, and its mostly flat land leads to the Atlantic Ocean. Beaches, swamps and longleaf pines make up the landscape here.
North Carolina’s diverse regions are home to mammals like black bears, coyotes and raccoons; reptiles like sea turtles; amphibians like salamanders; and birds like ospreys and cardinals (the state bird). The state boasts 300 species of trees – including longleaf pine, shortleaf pine and the American chestnut tree. Plus, nearly 3,000 types of flowering plants –including the flowering dogwood, the state flower.
MORE FUN STUFF
Famous pirate Blackbeard called North Carolina home and spent time looting ships off the coast in the early 1700s. In 1799, a shiny nugget was found in Little Meadow Creek, North Carolina and became the first gold discovered in what is now the United States.
Orville and Wilbur Wright were the first to achieve powered flight with their Wright Flyer in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. The brothers had been building and experimenting with gliders since 1899, and their innovations in design and engineering led them to success. The Wright Flyer was a revolutionary aircraft, and the brothers' achievement made them world famous. They continued to develop their flying machines, and their work paved the way for the modern aviation industry.
Tobacco has been a staple crop in North Carolina since the beginning of the state’s roots. It was so important to the colonists that they even used it as money. Durham’s revitalized American Tobacco Campus (formerly the Lucky Strike cigarette plant) is a must-see tobacco history highlight.
Plenty of famous folks were born in North Carolina, too, including jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, President James K. Polk, and maybe President Andrew Jackson (he was born on the border of North and South Carolina).
You might want to visit the Outer Banks, a group of islands with beaches, state parks and shipwreck-diving sites. One of those islands, Roanoke Island, was home to the first colony of English settlers in the New World. In the late 1500s, the settlers disappeared, and historians are still trying to solve the mystery of the Lost Colony.

A JOURNEY OF DISCIPLINE, GROWTH, AND SELF-DEFENSE
Taekwondo is more than just a martial art – it’s a path to self-improvement, friendship and cultural understanding. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your self-defense skills, make new friends or immerse yourself in the discipline of this ancient art, Taekwondo offers a rewarding experience. By training in Taekwondo, we learn invaluable life lessons such as self-discipline, respect, perseverance and focus. Through its teachings, we also gain the ability to protect ourselves, mastering various self-defense techniques. In short, Taekwondo is an enriching way to connect with others while embarking on a personal journey of growth.
WHAT IS TAEKWONDO?
Taekwondo originated in Korea in 1946 as a martial art dedicated to strengthening both the mind and body. It emphasizes balance, precision and the development of character. The art is divided into two primary categories: poomsae and sparring. Poomsae refers to a series of choreographed movements that form patterns or “forms,” while sparring involves real-time combat between two or more practitioners. Each aspect develops different skills, but both are essential to the practice of Taekwondo. Poomsae builds discipline, focus and control, while sparring enhances agility, reflexes and strategic thinking.

BENEFITS OF TAEKWONDO
Taekwondo offers numerous benefits for people of all ages and backgrounds. For children, it instills values such as respect, integrity, perseverance and confidence, which extend beyond the dojang (training space) into everyday life. Adults gain the same mental and physical advantages, improving both their health and selfconfidence. One of the core benefits of Taekwondo is learning self-defense. In today’s world, knowing how to protect yourself and others is invaluable, and Taekwondo provides an effective set of tools to do so.
In addition to self-defense, training in Taekwondo sharpens the mind and body, promoting overall wellness. The practice combines physical strength with mental focus, making it an ideal way to stay fit while building a resilient mindset. This martial art is suitable for everyone, regardless of age or gender, and provides a sense of community and camaraderie among practitioners.
MY TAEKWONDO JOURNEY
My name is Nikklyn Pennington, and I’m a proud student at Pure Taekwondo Center. I am currently a second-degree black belt and will soon be testing for my third degree. Taekwondo has had a profound impact on my life, helping me excel not only in the sport but also in school and other activities.
I started my Taekwondo journey at the age of four, and from the very first class, I knew I was hooked. Since then, my love for the sport has only grown, pushing me to reach new heights. I’m part of the poomsae team and have had the privilege of competing in 16 different states across the country, earning 34 medals along the way. Traveling and competing with my teammates has been one of the highlights of my journey, and I treasure the friendships I’ve made through Taekwondo.
Looking ahead, I have many goals I’m eager to pursue. In the coming years, I hope to medal in major competitions and ultimately qualify for team trials, with the dream of representing Team USA. Taekwondo has taught me that, with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.
Taekwondo offers a holistic path for personal development, blending physical fitness with mental discipline. Whether you’re just starting out or aiming for competitive excellence, like myself, Taekwondo has something valuable to offer everyone. It’s a journey that shapes not only your body but your character, as well, teaching lessons that last a lifetime.

the benefits of a solo date the benefits of a solo date
BY BETHANY GODWIN
Have you ever spent time alone, intentionally? I don’t mean lying on the couch after the kids have gone to bed scrolling through your phone or searching Netflix for something that you know you can only watch when you’re alone. I mean planning an entire day for yourself, by yourself.
TIME IS CURRENCY
I discovered this many years ago after my son got through those first years where he needed me much of the time, and my husband and I had to barter with each other for who was going to be productive or on childcare duty. When he got more into the early preschool years and my husband got into his groove of taking him for outings, there was finally this opportunity it seemed for myself to have a break. This wasn’t something that happened all the time, but when it happened, it felt magical!
You don’t really think about when you are pregnant and anticipating this child that your time is going to become almost like currency; it becomes so much more valuable. Before my son was born, I had time alone, but I didn’t really pay much attention to it…it was just life. Suddenly though, after that child is born, your “free” time becomes something you anticipate eagerly with all sorts of desires.
THE REJUVENATION OF TIME ALONE
When the chance popped up for me to have a significant amount of time alone, I found myself daydreaming. Even taking a walk sounded amazing; a walk alone is a very different experience than a walk with children. Leaving whenever I pleased, not having to convince anyone to get out of the car, not having to plan snacks or toys for entertainment and having silence to complete a thought.
I found that planning out a self-care date for myself was rejuvenating. It allowed me to get back to “me!” Getting back in touch with who I am underneath my title of wife, mother and all the roles I play. It made me get quiet and ask myself “what do I truly enjoy?” I found not having a lot of time can really make you prioritize what you do want to spend your time on.
PLANNING YOUR SOLO DATE
I approached it as if I was taking myself out on a day date; my favorite things I enjoyed preparenthood, I found a way to plan them into the schedule of the day. I started with the beginning of the day including my morning routine, a place I wanted to visit, an activity I wanted to do, where I’d want to eat lunch, etc. It was a day I would be completely on my own, no one to have to compromise with or figure out schedules together. Everything was my choice; that freedom can feel exhilarating.
EVERYONE BENEFITS
Being alone with yourself the entire day also really gives you time to get to know yourself again; you aren’t distracted with others’ dilemmas or desires. You are the only person to focus on that day. Often during postpartum and early parenthood, it can be so hard to connect with just us because there is constantly someone that needs us, looking for us to guide them or help them with a task they can’t do on their own. It can seem like there is never enough time in the day for household or career tasks. Relationships also need our attention, with whatever energy we have left to offer. It is a very challenging time to be able to have space for connecting with ourselves.
If you are able to have space right now in whatever life stage you are in, I encourage you to think about if you had a day all to yourself…how would you spend it? What could that day give you? Would it add to your quality of life? Chances are it would tremendously, which also in turn adds to the lives of others you are caring for. You’ve heard the adage, “we cannot pour from an empty cup.” Never have I found that to be so true than when I became a parent.
Getaway Guide: January’s Must-Visit Spot
Find Out How Special and Beautiful Winter is
This January at Winterfest in Blowing Rock
is a great year to focus on spending time as a family by seeing more of our amazing state. One way to do this is to plan either a road trip or a weekend away to see a different part of the state each month.
I’m excited to be sharing this year-long series, Getaway Guide, where each month, I’ll showcase a new place to visit in NC. For January, it’s only fitting I feature a destination that truly embraces winter and its dazzling beauty.
by SUZY FIELDERS
Blowing Rock is full of small town charm, wintry fun and gorgeous mountain views. Every January, they throw their annual WinterFest that is a great time for the entire family. It’s the perfect time to pack up the car, grab the family and see what winter in the mountains is all about!
A SPECIAL MOUNTAIN TOWN
Amanda Lugenbell, assistant director of Blowing Rock Tourism Development Authority, says of this special mountain town, “Blowing Rock has a unique charm,
full of hometown warmth and genuine friendliness that welcomes visitors like neighbors. The town is compact and walkable, with gathering places sprinkled throughout for catching up with friends, whether that’s a row of park benches or a cozy outdoor dining patio.”
Its location off Interstates 321 and 221 also makes it an ideal hub to explore the NC High Country and Blue Ridge Mountains areas.
TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO IN BLOWING ROCK
While in town, you won’t want to miss doing or seeing these five things!
1. Stroll the downtown area and check out its restaurants and shops.
2. Enjoy the ultimate winter activities of skiing, snowboarding and ice skating at Appalachian Ski Mountain.
3. Check out the 25 miles of carriage trails at Cone Memorial Park.
4. Visit the town’s namesake, The Blowing Rock, to see incredible and unforgettable views.
5. Learn and have fun at The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum. Admission is always free!
WHY VISIT IN JANUARY?
While any time of year is great to visit Blowing Rock, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit in January when WinterFest takes place. This family friendly festival which started in 1998 as a small event to showcase the fun of winter has grown into an annual huge event that attracts people well outside of Blowing Rock.
WinterFest aims to help locals and visitors celebrate winter with a variety of outdoor, cold-weather fun activities and cozy, delicious food and drink. You’ll want to see and enjoy as much as you can at this festival, but here are a few must-do activities.
• Polar Bear Plunge at Chetola Resort – This activity is an OG and has been with the festival since its creation!
• Blowing Rock WinterFeast – Try out many local food options at this restaurant showcase.
• Ice Stroll – Marvel at the downtown ice carving displays.
• Ice Carving Demonstrations in Memorial Park – See first hand how ice carvings happen and the amount of work that goes into them.
• Chilly Chili Challenge – See things heat up at the chili competition!
• Winterfest Beer Garden – Grab one of your favorite brews or try a new one.
• Wine Tasting & Auction – Enjoy trying out some wines and take home your favorite ones.
• WinterPaws Dog Show – Don’t forget to check out this great event showing off our furry friends.
Since parking is tricky on busy festival days, if you are visiting for a weekend, try to stay at a hotel or rental in town so that you’re close to and within walking distance of all the fun. Lugenbell also shares this parking tip, “The parking lot by the Robbins Pool is often the last one to fill up. The walk to Main Street is a pleasant two blocks – follow the History Walk stations through Broyhill Park and up Laurel Lane.”
So, this winter, don’t hibernate and miss out, but instead, head to Blowing Rock’s WinterFest and celebrate this overlooked season!

Why Giving Chores to Children Can Be Beneficial
BY ELISA COPPEDE
While childhood may seem like a time to withhold the various responsibilities adults deal with, it can be the perfect time to mold younger generations with the fulfillment of getting a task done. While many adults may not enjoy having to complete various chores around the house, for a young child, these mundane tasks are quite interesting. Personally, I do not enjoy loading and unloading the washer and dryer. I was surprised when my three-year-old asked if he could “help Mommy.” What would have been a much quicker activity became a slightly longer, yet enjoyable process. I loved watching my son wrap his small arms around the wet laundry and push it with all his might into the dryer. This enthusiasm was clearly infectious in that, a few moments later, my five-year-old ran in to watch us pour liquid detergent into a small cup – which I later allowed her to pour into the basin.
While I may be on board for assigning my two children regular chores to complete around the house, there is still some debate regarding this topic. Many parents want to preserve childhood as long as possible, citing the adage, “let kids be kids.” While others may view children to be less capable, preferring to finish the housework as efficiently as possible. Yes, it would have been a much quicker laundry session if I had told them to leave, but I am glad I did not. While these arguments do hold weight, they also overlook the many positive benefits of giving kids chores. Curious to read more and decide where you fall within this debate?
Read on for five of the many reasons why assigning daily household chores may be an excellent responsibility to give to your young ones
1
ASSIGNING CHORES TEACHES RESPONSIBILITY. Assigning your children regular chores helps them to become self-reliant, a trait that is crucial to have in later years. By simply asking children to clean their room or clear off their own dinner plate, parents can help children feel proud of themselves after completing a household task. They will also take immense pride in doing something that usually the “adults handle.”
2
LEARNING A NEW CHORE CAN HELP INSTILL ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS IN YOUNGER GENERATIONS.
My children were very curious about the process of cleaning our dinner plates. From taking their dirty plates to the trashcan to scrape off leftover food, to washing it off in the sink, to finally loading it into the dishwasher, this entire process was captivating for them when they were younger. By teaching your little ones that most daily tasks require a specific process, it naturally helps them learn how to organize and follow specific orders.
3
CHORES CAN HELP BUILD A STRONG WORK ETHIC. Being responsible for various tasks around the house helps naturally establish a strong work ethic. This is a character trait valued later by teachers and bosses. Completing various household chores can be rewarded through an allowance or TV time. Paying children for a job well done can also spark an ambitious spirit, inspiring them to work outside the house once they reach their teens.
4 5
LEARNING NEW CHORES CAN STRENGTHEN BONDS BETWEEN GENERATIONS.
While many may view daily chores as a waste of time for children to learn, many older generations would love to help teach specific ones. I know my own children wanted to learn exactly how to fold laundry, especially socks, after watching their “Abu” (this is a nickname for their Abuela, their Peruvian grandmother). Older generations often take pride in teaching younger children how to do daily chores which can result in a bonding experience.
TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS TAUGHT.
Whether it is rising early to help make up their beds or making sure they have enough time to take their dog out for an evening stroll, each household chore requires a set time and pace. Learning how much time they must have to do such tasks will help children overall. When children become teenagers, they will have multiple schoolwork deadlines, housework and social lives. Learning how to manage their time early on will help them set priorities later and manage their time.
Finding Ways to Celebrate Reading this January
BY ELISA WALLACE COPPEDE
This January, there are a few varied reasons to celebrate reading. The entire month of January is known as “National Book Blitz Month” while January 23rd is “National Reading Day.” Both celebrations are aimed at promoting a love of literacy, from young readers to seasoned literary critics.
January is often a difficult month to find motivation to head outdoors due to inclement winter weather. This said, the entire month is the perfect time to cozy up with a new or old book and dive into another world. The creation of “National Book Blitz Month” is first aimed at having authors promote their books through a “blitz” style of marketing, to excite and encourage younger audiences to put down their smart devices and pick up a book. Sadly today, most younger generations have a lifestyle centered around technology. “National Book Blitz Month” is a way to channel our energy towards displaying to younger generations how they can find true joy through reading.
“National Reading Day” is a similar celebration of literacy. January 23rd is a day which encourages younger readers to put down everything and READ! Schools across the country feature diverse types of reading activities, from hosting a “read-a-thon” to inviting adult readers to the classroom to read their favorite books. In the end, both celebrations have a similar focus – fostering a love of reading for all.
Curious on what ways you can create a positive environment which encourages reading in your home? This can be either for yourself, or for a loved one. Read on for five different tips on how to embrace literacy this January.
LOVE OF LITERACY TIP #1: CREATE A “BOOK NOOK.”
Again, this does not have to only be for younger audiences. Find a cozy area of your home, and make it conducive for reading. This can be a comfortable seat near a window, or even a corner of your room, where you can set up some pillows and blankets. The main idea here is to make sure to include several books in the area, adequate lighting as well as highlighters, a notepad and pencils (if the area will be used for studying).
LOVE OF LITERACY TIP #2: TAKE IT OUTSIDE!
While we have discussed how often January is not ideal for enjoying the outdoors, if the weather cooperates, consider taking a few warm blankets outside, a cup of hot cocoa, coffee or tea, and head outside! Reading outside is a wonderful way to enjoy fresh air and the sounds of wildlife, while also escaping into a new read.
LOVE OF LITERACY TIP #3: INCLUDE THE ENTIRE
FAMILY.
The purpose again of literacy celebrations throughout the year, is to encourage everyone to read. This said, make sure to include all members of the family in your own literacy celebration. At schools, teachers will often “drop everything and read” with their students during a read-a-thon. Do the same at home. Create a time for all to sit down, pick up a book and enjoy taking a ride into another reality, together.
LOVE OF LITERACY TIP #4: BRING THE THEATER HOME!
“Reader’s theater” is a wonderful way to engage younger audiences up through high school to become specific characters within their favorite books. No script is needed. Simply establish one person or two to be the “narrator,” then pick other members of the family to read the dialogue of various characters. The beauty of “Reader’s Theater” is that it is up to you how elaborate you would like it to be. If reading a shorter book, consider even creating a set for certain scenes where younger members can help with painting and creating the stage.
LOVE OF LITERACY TIP #5: JOIN OR START A BOOK CLUB.
Being a part of a book club is a sure-fire way to read new books, which you may have not originally selected. Signing up for one also helps you gain insight on new subjects, not only from the book, but from the discussion of the book the book club creates, as well. There are countless reasons for joining one – from joining one to meet new friends, to joining a religious book group, book clubs are also healthy outlets for exploring a subject, while also offering new friendships.

HOW TO FIGHT SAD: “SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER”
BY KAREN COOPER
While talking to a close friend, she shared with me that one of her earliest memories from childhood was a feeling of melancholy, and sometimes even deep sadness, when the clocks would be turned back and the hours of daylight would become shorter. She said she didn’t know how to define or explain those feelings then, but the reaction to the change of the clocks continued and became more difficult to tolerate as she got older. Even as the other members of her family were enjoying the holidays…she couldn’t understand why that time of year was never happy for her.
Now in adulthood, she has figured out the problem and obtained an official diagnosis from her doctor. The diagnosis is “Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).” All that melancholy and deep sadness from her past makes more sense now! Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a major depressive disorder with a seasonal pattern. It generally comes on around the fall when there is less light in a day and usually ends by March or April when the days get longer. Symptoms can include feelings of hopelessness, deep sadness, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. A visit to the doctor is recommended.
There are many ways to combat SAD. Here are some of our favorites…
GET A DOSE OF NATURE
Studies have shown that even short walks in nature can improve your mood. If you can make this a goal every day and go out during daylight hours (even if the sun’s about to set), your mental health will thank you.
INVEST IN A LIGHT BOX
The National Alliance on Mental Illness recommends 30 minutes of daily exposure to a light therapy box. These come in all shapes and sizes and price ranges, so it’s feasible to have them all over your home. They can be as small as a cell phone or as large as a floor lamp. You can choose what works best for you. You may even be able to get reimbursement through your insurance plan.
STAY SOCIAL, BUT RESPECT YOUR OWN LIMITS
Someone feeling the darkness of seasonal depression may not want to get up, get dressed and brave the cold to go interact with people, but withdrawing may make things worse. You know yourself best! If it takes some extra effort to brave the outside world, it will probably be worth it and will most likely make you feel better. Obviously, serious depression cannot be overcome just by “getting out of the house.” You have to make this call for yourself.
STAY COZY
Be kind to yourself. Make time for yourself. Keep yourself warm and cozy. Make sure you have the proper gear for going outside. When you know you’re going to be warm, you’re more likely to get out there and brave the elements. Feeling good indoors is also very important! Make sure you have blankets you love, just the right socks, an essential oil diffuser (if that’s your thing) and any warm beverages that give you a sense of comfort. Having these things will help you focus on the warmth and coziness of winter instead of the cold and darkness that can bring up feelings of sadness.
MAKE A PERFECT BATH
If you love baths, now is the perfect time to pull together the accessories you need to make yourself feel better. Baths are warm and soothing and can help you relax and feel cared for. Scented Epsom salts can help improve your mood…I can’t tell you how wonderful Dr. Teal’s Pink Himalayan Mineral Soak smells. You will never want to leave the tub! There are many other scents that can lift your mood as well. Choose your favorite, put on some music you love, and soak up the healing vibes.
How I Made $1,000 in One Month Selling Used Items on Marketplace
BY
“There is always money on the table.”
Whether you’re looking to supplement income during a slow business season, save for a home project or add a little extra to your vacation fund, the trick is knowing where to find it. In my experience, that money is often hiding in plain sight.
Recently, for me, it was tucked away in the form of a closet overflowing with baby items with which I hadn’t been ready to part. Sentimental reasons, the “what if” scenarios and general procrastination had kept me holding on to things long after my now nearly four-year-old son had outgrown them. Staring at all the clutter one month, I realized it was time.
Enter: Facebook Marketplace.
After a weekend spent sorting, cleaning and listing, I walked away with slightly more than $1,000 in sales by the end of the month. (That certainly softened the blow of saying “goodbye” to memories of my baby era!)
Here’s how I did it – and how you can, too.
STEP 1: START WITH INVENTORY
The first step is to take stock of what you have. I pulled everything out of the closet and made piles – pass down to friends, donate and sell. Once I had my “sell” pile, I cleaned each item thoroughly and made sure it was in its best condition and ready for photos! Quality photos will make or break your revenue for secondhand online sales! Take clear, well-lit pictures from multiple angles and include close-ups of any unique details or slight damages you want to be upfront about! If possible, record a brief video of the item as it builds buyer trust and also helps your listing rank higher in the Facebook algorithm.
STEP 2: DO YOUR RESEARCH
Pricing your items appropriately is crucial! Start by finding the original MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) for your items online. Websites like Amazon or Target are great for checking current retail values, particularly if your items are still being sold new. Next, browse Facebook Marketplace to see what similar items are selling for in your area. This helps you gauge perceived market value! My personal strategy varies
depending on the item. For things I simply want to get rid of, I price slightly lower to quickly sell, but for high-demand items or high quality ones, I set the price higher, knowing someone will probably pay a premium. I also build in a small buffer, pricing items $5 higher than my target, so there’s room for negotiation.
STEP 3: CRAFT DETAILED LISTINGS
A listing that sells well is specific and informative. Include the brand name, size, year and any unique details about the item. I often copy and paste product descriptions directly from the retailer’s website, adding personal notes about the condition or how the item was used. Highlight anything that sets your listing apart, like “pet-free, smoke-free home” or “gently used only a handful of times.” Finally, mention your pickup location or general neighborhood area and the forms of payment you accept to avoid misunderstandings.
STEP 4: STAY ON TOP OF NOTIFICATIONS
When your listings go live, potential buyers will reach out via Facebook Messenger. Set up notifications on your phone or desktop so you don’t miss inquiries – buyers are more likely to follow through when you respond quickly. I try to reply quickly to capitalize on their initial interest before they start browsing other options. A fast response could mean the difference between a sale and a missed opportunity!
STEP 5: ARRANGE SAFE & CONVENIENT PICKUPS
This deserves to be stressed; you set the terms for pickups and payments! I prefer contactless porch pickups and accept only cash to avoid complications. If a buyer requests a public meetup, consider whether it aligns with your comfort level. I also like to check the buyer’s profile prior to replying to messages to see if we have any “mutual friends” on Facebook as well as check their Marketplace rating and reviews. Always prioritize safety and convenience for yourself.
In one month, I was able to declutter my home and earn more than $1,000 – all while knowing my sweet baby boy’s items were finding new homes for new memories. Facebook Marketplace really can be a powerful, simple money-making tool. Take it from me, extra income might be sitting in a closet right now!

Winter is a great time to embrace both coziness and chilly weather. This season provides many opportunities to spend time as a family. While I’m not a fan of cold, I do love how winter has so many cozy opportunities for my family. Plus, when we do get snow, it’s so beautiful!
Below are some ideas to help you and your family create your own winter bucket list.
ENJOY ALL THE SNOW FUN
We don’t always get snow in the Triad, but when we do, make sure to make the most of it. Some snow activities to enjoy including making snow angels, having a snowball fight, making snow cream and building a snowman.
HAVE A MEAL IN A GLOBE
You might think, since it’s winter, outdoor dining is out, but some local places have found a way around it. At The Katharine in downtown Winston-Salem, they have globes and a gondola to enjoy a meal on their patio and not freeze. Or venture out to Stock + Grain Assembly Food Hall in High Point to grab one of their first-come basis globes!
CONDUCT A COFFEE TOUR
There are so many amazing coffee shops and cafes in Forsyth County. Nothing warms you up like a cup of coffee! This winter, make a list of all your favorite ones and ones you want to visit. Then, create your very own coffee tour. It can be a one-day thing or make it last all winter! Here are some of my favorites – The Remedy, Camel City Coffee, Camino, Ardmore Coffee, Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, Dog-eared Coffee Company, Clutch Coffee Bar and Krankies.
WARM YOUR BELLY WITH A SOUP FLIGHT
Last winter, many people commented on a local food Facebook group wanting soup flights. Westtown Restaurant delivered, and it’s been a hit ever since. You can choose three soups for your flight from a menu of five, and they offer new soup flavors weekly! Each flight is also served with a fresh sourdough breadstick from Kiki’s Kitchen.
TAKE TO THE ICE
Head over to the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds and take the family ice skating. If you’d rather watch instead of being on the ice, be sure to catch the Carolina Thunderbirds play!
CRAFT YOUR 2025 GOALS
Instead of setting New Year’s Resolutions, craft goals for yourself and even your family for the year. Resolutions tend to fizzle out after January, but goals, especially obtainable ones, are much easier to accomplish!
TRY OUT WINTER-INSPIRED RECIPES
Winter flavors are full of cinnamon, peppermint, cranberry and caramel. These and many other rich winter flavors provide a great opportunity for trying new recipes and foods.
READ WINTER BOOKS TO YOUR KIDS
Buy or check out from the library your favorite winter books and read them to your kids. My family’s favorite is The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Winter from The World of Eric Carle.
HAVE A WINTER-THEMED MOVIE NIGHT OR WEEKEND
Grab the family and have a winter-themed movie night, or spread it throughout an entire weekend. Some winter family movies to consider are Snow Day, Frozen, Frozen 2, Snow Dogs, Eight Below, Cool Runnings, Ice Age Series, Ice Princess and Snow Buddies For teens, consider watching Eddie the Eagle and Day After Tomorrow

Lefty Folks Need Love Too
BY RENEE SKUDRA
Left-handed folks will be the first to tell you that we are different and, fortunately, this latter-day admission now comes with some pride attached to it. According to the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, roughly 10 percent of people are left-handed with one meta-analysis showing that men are 23% more likely to be left-handed than women. Medical research has consistently illustrated that the brains of left- and right-handed individuals are wired differently. Although the parts of the brain are anatomically the same, those which control motor, language and spatial processing skills are utilized differently. In right-handed people, the left hemisphere controls the dominant right hand whereas the situation is exactly reversed in left-handed individuals. The human brain is divided in two hemispheres – the left and the right. Traditionally, the right hemisphere has been associated with creative skills which manifest in fields such as music and art. Chapter and verse at the Max Planck Institute has it that, “left-handedness (is) associated with differences in brain symmetry in areas related to working memory, language, hand control and vision.” Although scientists widely posit that a neural basis of handedness is unclear, it is largely argued that lefties might have advantages due to brain hemisphere differences which lead to superior divergent skills and creativity.
From time immemorial, the issue of left-handedness has fascinated scholars and researchers. Back in the day, people noticed lefties, (and, they still do). Our populace formerly faced discrimination for example in the Middle Ages where lefthanded persons were routinely accused of witchcraft. Use of the left hand was associated with the devil (he was allegedly a lefty, too) and other evil-doings. The Latin word for “left” is “sinistra” from which we inherit the word “sinister.” People still speak of using one’s “sinistral hand.” One well-known lefty, England’s King George VI, was one of many forced to write with his right hand and that act of coercion was consequently associated with stammering from which he famously suffered. I remember growing up in upstate New York public schools when some wellmeaning teacher ran over to me in class and suddenly yanked a pencil out of my hand and said “No! Never write with the left hand!” Even as a university student, I was often admonished that I should be writing with my right hand while many others asked me quizzically, “How can you write with your left hand? It seems so awkward and unnatural.” Scientists now know that lefty status is determined in the womb with up to 40 genes contributing to handedness. Although they know that handedness is partly shaped by genes, it was not until 2019 that they identified differences in parts of the DNA of left- and right-handed people. The jury is still out on this issue of left-handedness though –researchers still haven’t found a clear “marker” or “signature” in the brain’s anatomy that can predict whether someone is left- or right-handed.
Although lefties are largely no longer persecuted, it has taken us a very long time to toot our own horns. Present-day science, however, has shown conclusively that we shine brightly (and differently) in many ways. According to Alia Hoyt in her April 16, 2024 article “10 Things Lefties Do Better,” here are a list of some of those fascinating facts:
A lefty tendency towards excellence in divergent thinking, showing a huge manifest presence in the creation of music and art. Famous lefties in those fields include Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and well-known guitarists Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain.
Solving complex mathematical problems.
Playing one-on-one sports like baseball and tennis. Think: Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax and John McEnroe.
Likelihood of becoming a president. Well-known lefties are Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden.
Creating architecture. Lefties excel at 3D thinking and perception, an important part of the design and construction process.
Being a better driver. In studies, lefties caused significantly fewer accidents than their right-handed counterparts. (I’ll brag for a moment and say that I have never been in an accident in decades of driving. No one I know can make the self-same attestation.)
Benefits in physical recovery, such as from strokes, due to less dependence on the brain’s left side.
Fortunately, these days, we lefties can find a growing number of products designed with us particularly in mind. Glory Hallelujah (as my mother would have said)! Montgomery Burns once said “Damned infernal gizmo. My kingdom for a left-handed can opener.” These are now in existence which famous lefties like Einstein, Gandhi, Isaac Newton and Charlie Chaplin might have devoutly wished for and appreciated. As a proud lefty, I say equivocally, in the words of C.R. Manske: “Life without left-handed people wouldn’t be right.” 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Stepping into the
Navigating the Anxiety of Waiting
BY MEGAN TAYLOR
If you are like me, hearing the phrase “into the unknown” creates the image of Elsa from Frozen 2 bursting through the castle doors while bellowing the melodic phrase. However, these three words encompass the, sometimes unfortunate reality that life is full of moments when we are forced to step into the unknown. Whether it’s waiting to hear back from a job interview, waiting for medical test results or anticipating a big decision that will shape your future, the unknown can be both exciting and terrifying. During these moments, the in-between time, that period of uncertainty, can be one of the most nerve-wracking experiences we face. But, what can we do during these times?
How can we manage the anxiety and restlessness that often accompanies waiting for something beyond our control? At the heart of waiting is uncertainty. When we don’t know what’s coming, our minds can easily spiral into worst-case scenarios. This feeling of being in limbo can trigger a mix of anxiety, stress and impatience. The longer the wait, the more our minds tend to race. We question ourselves, second-guess our decisions and imagine scenarios that may never come to pass. This uncertainty creates a physiological response in the body, often resulting in tension, sleeplessness and an overall sense of unease.
Psychologists suggest that our brains have evolved to seek certainty because it allows us to plan, prepare and feel in control. In times of uncertainty, we feel vulnerable and exposed, which can lead to heightened anxiety. But, while this is a natural response, it doesn’t mean we are powerless during these times. In fact, how we manage our anxiety can significantly affect our emotional well-being and how we emerge from the waiting period.
While waiting for something beyond your control can feel paralyzing, there are several ways to help reduce anxiety and regain a sense of comfort during this uncertain time.
1.
FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN
CONTROL: One of the most helpful things you can do is identify what you can control in the present moment. While you may not be able to control the outcome of your situation, you can control your thoughts, your responses and your actions. Engage in activities that keep you grounded and present. Whether it’s going for a walk, exercising, meditating or reading, focusing on these small actions can help distract from overthinking and give you a sense of purpose.
2. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION: Mindfulness is the practice of staying present in the moment and is one of the most effective tools for managing anxiety. Meditation, in particular, can help quiet the racing thoughts and bring you back to the present. Even just a few minutes of deep breathing can calm your nervous system, reduce stress and improve focus.
3. REFRAME THE SITUATION: Anxiety often stems from the fear of the unknown, but it’s possible to reframe this fear. Instead of seeing the wait as a time of dread, try to view it as an opportunity for growth. Use this time to explore new interests, develop skills or engage in activities that bring you joy. Remember that the outcome will be just one moment in your life, and you can learn and grow through the waiting process itself. Reframing the situation allows you to take the focus off the uncertainty and shift toward what you can do in the meantime.
4. STAY CONNECTED WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE: It’s easy to feel isolated when you’re waiting for a big decision or event. During these times, it’s essential to lean on your support system. Talk to friends, family or loved ones who can provide encouragement and help you gain perspective. Sometimes, just sharing your feelings can lighten the emotional load and make you feel less alone. If you feel comfortable, seek out a therapist or counselor to help you navigate your feelings of anxiety.
5. SET SMALL, MANAGEABLE GOALS:
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the waiting period, break it up into smaller, more manageable chunks. Set short-term goals that you can accomplish in the meantime. This could be as simple as cleaning your house, taking a class or working on a creative project. By shifting your focus to achievable goals, you can build a sense of accomplishment that helps counterbalance the uncertainty of what’s to come.
6. ACCEPT THE UNCERTAINTY:
Finally, one of the most powerful ways to manage the anxiety of waiting is to embrace the uncertainty itself. Instead of resisting it, accept that uncertainty is a natural part of life. Recognize that, while you can’t control what happens, you can control how you respond to it. By accepting uncertainty, you release the pressure of having to know what’s next, and you open yourself up to new possibilities that you may have otherwise overlooked.
The anxiety of waiting for something beyond your control can be one of the most difficult emotional experiences we face. Yet, with the right tools and mindset, we can navigate this period of uncertainty in a way that fosters personal growth and emotional resilience.
By focusing on what you can control, practicing mindfulness, reframing the situation, staying connected with others, setting small goals and accepting the unknown, you can find peace in the waiting and move forward with confidence – no matter what the outcome may be. While stepping into the unknown can feel daunting, it is also where growth happens. And, with patience and selfcompassion, you can turn the anxiety of waiting into a powerful opportunity for transformation.

Winter Indoor Activities for Kids at Home
by TMOM TEAM MEMBER, ANNA KELLER
This time of year, with colder temperatures and fewer daylight hours, it can be challenging to help kids burn off energy or stay engaged while having fun. If you’re on the hunt for winter indoor activity ideas, you’re in the right place!
RELAXING ACTIVITIES
Family Movie Night
Transform your living room into a cozy home theater with comfy blankets, popcorn, and a family-friendly movie. Let the kids take turns picking the film, and add themed activities to make the night extra special. You could draw characters from the movie or host a trivia quiz afterward.
Have an Indoor Picnic
This activity is perfect for cold or rainy days and makes mealtime feel whimsical. Eating together on the living room floor? How neat! Spread out a blanket, lay out your food, and enjoy this unique dining experience.
CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
Do Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts are a great way to stimulate creativity. Set up a DIY craft station with supplies like colored paper, glue, markers, and stickers. Crafting keeps little hands busy and is a fun way to teach new skills.
This can be as simple as coloring, which keeps both of my kiddos occupied for a while (and is something they enjoy doing together). Or you can try a more structured project by finding a cute craft idea on Pinterest or Instagram. We’ve also loved Green Kid Crafts subscriptions, which come with themed boxes filled with fun, creative projects my daughter and I LOVE doing together!
Bake Something Yummy Together
Involving kids in the kitchen is a fantastic way to teach them about food and cooking. Try simple baking recipes like cookies, cupcakes, or homemade pizza. You can even make it a family competition where everyone decorates their own treats.
My daughter and I love baking together year-round, but we do it even more in the winter. To make the activity last longer, bake something you can decorate—what kid doesn’t love adding frosting and sprinkles to their creation? (Quick tip: Look for sprinkles made with natural dyes, like vegetable-based colors.) This blog is filled with Kid-Friendly Cookbook Recommendations.
Build a Fort
My kids got Nugget pillows as their big Christmas gift, so the fort-building game is strong in our house these days. Even without something like that, you can help your children collect materials like blankets, sturdy pillows, and chairs to create their own forts.
Legos or Other Building Blocks
You really can’t go wrong with the fun and creativity that building blocks provide for all ages. Even most adults enjoy participating in this classic activity!
INDOOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Burn Off Energy Indoors
Fitness games are perfect for keeping everyone active. Create obstacle courses, have a dance-off, or try indoor exercises like yoga or stretching routines.
Dance Party
We love an impromptu dance party while dinner is cooking, but an open mic night takes things up a notch. Try a portable karaoke machine to make it even more fun. You can also encourage your kids to create tickets for the event and assign songs for everyone to sing. Interactive video games like Just Dance or Ring Fit Adventure are also great options for a fun workout.
Kids’ Charades
Charades is a fun game for the whole family. Tailor the ideas to the age group of your kids. For young children, use simple prompts like animals or cartoon characters. If you need inspiration, check out the fun charade ideas on the Moms & Munchkins website.
Indoor Scavenger Hunt
An indoor scavenger hunt is a great way to get kids moving around the house while searching for hidden treasures. You can create themed hunts using items you already have or make it educational by asking kids to find objects that start with certain letters or match specific colors.
One idea we love is creating a big sheet with all the uppercase letters and hiding Post-it notes with lowercase letters around the house. Kids can match them once they find them.
With these activities, you’ll have plenty of options to keep your kids entertained, active, and creative during the winter months!
It’s a Grand Life Grand
And A New Year Begins
by SUSAN WOODALL
I love holidays; Christmas is my favorite. I love the decorations, the songs, being with family and friends, watching our youngest granddaughter dance in the Nutcracker ballet and celebrating the reason for December 25th. Where most people take down their tree, put away all the ornaments and decor, our tree stays put until January 6th, and even then, I don’t like taking it down. Or, since it’s a fake tree, putting it away.
A new year can be a new start. I don’t make any New Year’s resolutions. I know what I would like to accomplish over the year, but I don’t know what the year holds for me and I don’t want, or need, a list reminding me of something I failed to get done. It’s wonderful to realize you have reached a goal without stressing about a timeline.
This year will be one of big changes for some of my grandchildren. Our eldest granddaughter will be a senior in high school and, possibly, know where she will be heading to college. She has a number of schools on her list that she has visited that she would be happy to attend. As her unbiased grandmother, any of them would be lucky to have her! I have said this before, but, and her parents agree, how is it possible that she is already at this point in her life? Her brother will join her in high school this year, leaving behind, as she did, the school they attended from kindergarten through eighth grade. And their youngest brother will move, in that same school, from elementary to middle school. I know each of them are excited and looking forward to the upcoming changes in their lives.
My husband and I are fortunate to have one of our daughter’s family living across the street from us, and another daughter’s family soon to be next to us. I can’t wait to see their home being
built knowing we’ll have four of our seven grands within a stone’s throw. We are very lucky to have our other daughter’s family only three-and-a-half hours away. We are a very close and loving family that takes every opportunity to be together. When your children are young, you hope they will develop a strong bond with each other that will stay with them as they grow up. Although they are all individuals, their differences don’t outweigh their love for each other. I hope my grandchildren will always have a bond, not only with their siblings, but with their cousins, as well.
This month is our “every other year family trip” to Disney World. It’s five days of having the best time. Sometimes we are all together, but often, depending on where the grandkids want to go and what they want to do, we split up. My husband and I try to go from one family to another, so we can share in their experiences. We get together for dinner and sometimes lunch. It is so fun to hear the grandkids regale us about their day and watch them interact with each other. This is a tradition I hope we will continue for many years to come.
So, no resolutions, just hopes to continue spending time with family and friends, planning to exercise more, lose a few pounds, really get started writing a book I’ve thought about for years and travel. I will be happy if I accomplish at least two off this list – the “spending time with family and friends” is a given, so that doesn’t count as one.
May we all make 2025 a wonderful year, full of joy and happy memories! And may this year bring peace on Earth and goodwill towards men.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective Appalachian Spirit – “United We Stand”
by A. KEITH TILLEY
This past year, we watched as yet another “once in a lifetime” tragedy occurred when Hurricane Helene tore through Florida’s Big Bend region as a massive Category 4 hurricane, becoming the deadliest mainland hurricane since Katrina in 2005 and made its way to our state’s backyard. The mountains of Western North Carolina had already been bombarded with rain in the days before Helene hit. Upon its arrival, more than 30 inches of rain fell on this region, overpowering rivers, streams and other tributaries as well as some dams causing massive mudslides and incredible flooding of roads, bridges and communities.
What made this so unique was how the rescue and relief efforts were excessively challenged by the geographical topography of the storm’s path. Unlike the southeastern coastal communities which tend to be mostly flat, Western North Carolina, or the High Country, as it’s called, isn’t. In addition, many of its inhabitants live separated by dense forests and rugged landscape. Typically, this is seen as a major benefit of the beautiful and serene mountain lifestyle. Not so much so in a hurricane. Checking homes, businesses and cars became even more difficult. Because approximately 200 roads were closed for safety concerns (landslides, downed power lines, washed-out roads, etc.), getting supplies and relief in some rural areas seemed nearly impossible. The storm’s enormous impact went well beyond the material and property damage. The mental strain it placed on the residents of the towns and communities had the potential to become unbearable if mishandled. It was at this moment, however, that a sense of empathy and unity with our brethren took hold of communities large and small across our state. This includes our generous and caring citizens and our government’s assistance with military search and rescue teams and relief measures designed for such large-scale catastrophes.
“There are no greater treasures than the highest human qualities such as compassion, courage and hope. Not even a tragic accident or disaster can destroy such treasures of the heart.” ~ Daisaku Ikeda
In the weeks and months that followed, the news reported on numerous donation drives across the state, providing valuable food, water and other essentials. Search and assistance teams from across the country came in to help. As I watched videos of the devastation and listened to first-hand accounts, I could hear and see the relief helicopters and military aircraft flying overhead. Where the utility workers, law enforcement, some 1,500 military troops, 6,100 National Guardsmen, 7,000 Federal personnel, Army Corps of Engineers, the Red Cross, FEMA, state officials and other organizations couldn’t reach soon enough, the communities reached out to each other to survive and rebuild. I’m sure there were mistakes along the
way, but, from what I could see, this was a full-scale effort to save our cherished piece of Appalachia – its people, its culture and its lifestyle – from ruins.
This was no smallscale event; it was massive and nearly unprecedented, and the terrain presented very unique questions for first responders, volunteers and more. You didn’t have to be from the High Country to feel their pain. Those that had visited these areas in the past or planned to visit felt a sense of loss as well. It was a communal shock when it happened and a unified effort in the ongoing post-storm cleanup and rescue.
In America, the world respects that in times of tragedy and devastation, we unite in our will to help those affected. Our generosity and compassion in times of trouble can change lives and provide much-needed hope to those in despair. Seeing supply trucks pull in, gasoline rigs arriving by police escort into stations and helicopters dropping necessary food and water into areas cut off by entry by any other means, had to help in some way the mental duress our neighbors were experiencing. As in the words of Fyodor Dostoevsky, “The darker the night, the brighter the stars.”
Understanding the lows that life throws at us on occasion, we should remember the Appalachian Spirit that developed and still exists for the people and the culture of Western North Carolina in their time of need and “make this moment last.” The essence of community, compassion, empathy and genuine concern for how life can tear down something so beautiful and pristine, but, working together, it can come back stronger. From the thorns of destruction emerges the rose.
Hanging on the wall inside one survivor’s home were the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “For each new morning with its light, for rest and shelter of the night, for health and food, for love and friends, for everything that goodness sends.” I sense these thankful words adopt a whole new meaning now.
As we enter this new year with hope and enthusiasm, let us say a silent prayer for our neighbors who continue to rebuild the communities we all know and love. May they know, as in the words of Helen Keller, “I am thankful that in a troubled world, no calamity can prevent the return of spring.”
