Letter From the Team I

n March this year, our team sat around my dining room table for a dinner of Korean barbecue and in-depth discussion of where we were going to go with Forsyth Woman Engaged!

We were ready for some changes and the results of that discussion are reflected in our 9th issue.

The most notable change is the formatting of the magazine to a full size publication. Additionally, our new publication months are November and May. We’ve made these changes for several reasons, but a huge bonus to November distribution is we’re able to present our magazine to brides at the beginning of engagement season (November – February) rather than half way in.

You may notice a few other changes as well, but what hasn’t changed is our commitment to bringing quality content that is relevant for the brides of Forsyth County. As is the case with all our publications, we bring you months of collective effort that, at the end of the day, boils down to a labor of love for what we do.

This particular issue is extra special for me, as my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hayes and Erica Eagle, are featured on the cover! Hayes is my husband’s younger brother. And since I know you are thinking it, no, the cover shot was not his “real” proposal. It was a super fun staged photo shoot! Hayes and Erica got engaged (in real life) on October 5, 2013.

I remember this date vividly because I was in Minneapolis, MN, running my first marathon and I was so bummed I couldn’t be there to celebrate with them!

Behind the Scenes: The Cover Shoot!

s you have clearly seen by now, we’ve made some significant changes to this issue of Forsyth Woman Engaged! The most prominent change is the new size of the magazine. Previously, we’ve always been a “pocketbook” size, but we are thrilled to offer you this new, full size magazine. With this exciting change, we thought it would be appropriate to have something different on the cover as well. We’ve always had brides (and sometimes grooms…and even a dog) on the cover; but this time, we wanted to go back to that first moment.

The moment that all of your exciting wedding planning officially began. The proposal. This beautiful couple (that also happens to be my sweet brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hayes and Erica Eagle) portrayed this moment perfectly.

Jeff Scott, owner of J. Darren photography, was the talent behind the camera that captured this beautiful moment. Jeff is so laid back and easy to work with…he made the cover shoot so enjoyable and FUN despite our having to go to a plan B. As I can personally attest to, this is a must-have trait for any wedding photographer. You never know for sure what the weather will do, so having a photographer that can quickly improvise and change plans at the last minute is so important. And Jeff, well, he most definitely has that trait.

We hope you enjoy these ‘behind the scenes’ looks at our team and our beautiful cover models. We had a blast shooting this cover (and this had nothing to do with the Prosecco, we promise)!

Getting Organized

e’s asked the question, and you said, “Yes!” Now what? Planning a wedding is fun but can be overwhelming. Depending on other factors – i.e., finishing up school, moving, starting a new job and any other number of variables – planning a wedding may be downright intimidating. Where to start? What should you do first?

H

Step one is to create a guest list. List everyone you think you may invite to your wedding. Ask your fiancé to contribute his list.

Ask your mother and soon-to-be mother-in-law for their feedback too. This isn’t the time to cut, this is the time to figure out how many potential guests you may or may not invite, so go ahead and add your first grade teacher and your fiancé’s former boss. It’s a working document and far from final. You may want to go ahead and guesstimate a number that includes plus-ones as well as children.

In 2014, the average cost per head for a wedding was $230. When you multiply the average cost per head by your guest list, this can be the first step in determining your overall budget. Too high? Revisit the list. Remember, you made a list of everyone you could potentially invite. Add or subtract based on a number that is affordable and manageable within your ideal budget. You may need to schedule some family meetings if your parents are contributing, but make sure everyone is comfortable with a number up front.

After you do this addition and subtraction, you’re ready for your next step in the organization process – prioritizing. Now that you have an idea of your budget, pick the top three things that are on your wish list. Have you always dreamed of a designer dress? Does your fiancé want an open bar and his favorite local band? Do you have your heart set on a particular cake or baker? The point of this exercise is to make sure that you understand that if you must have that designer dress, you may have to be willing to forego a full, open bar. If your fiancé 24

insists on an open bar, do you need to adjust the budget you’ll spend on a band and opt for a DJ instead? (We have a great budgeting worksheet on page 97 to help you with this exercise.)

Once you get through these two steps, priorities and organization will start to fall into place. You’ve laid the foundation for what your wedding should entail. You know how much you have to spend.

You’ve broken your budget apart by category with your top three must-haves given whatever additional financial backing you choose to allot.

Now that you have your foundation laid, if you plan to hire a wedding planner, this is the time to call. Your planner will appreciate that you know how much to work with and what your must-haves include. From here, your planner can either take the reins or help guide you through the process.

If you are a DIY bride who wants to organize the wedding from “I do” to “Adieu,” then, start early and take things one step at a time.

Be realistic about what you can accomplish on your own, and pace yourself. If you’re a procrastinator, your wedding isn’t going to change this habit. You may want to ask for help from your bridal party or family and, up front, make a list of what needs to be done. Don’t be afraid to delegate to others; as long as you’re clear about your expectation and trust the ones who are assisting you.

Be sure to utilize tools – i.e., Google Drive is a great way to share documents and spreadsheets with those who are helping you, and don’t forget to set up a secret Pinterest board to share ideas as well!

Most of all, breathe and remember that, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if your budget is $100 or $100,000…the end result is going to be the same -- you’ll be married to your beloved. So, relax, have fun, get organized and enjoy the experience!

ust as weddings are becoming more and more unique, engagements are becoming increasingly elaborate, with couples opting to share their news in exciting ways. In our world of social media, in the excitement of the moment, it will be tempting to rush to Facebook and immediately change your relationship status to “engaged.” However, before jumping into social media, stop and give certain people a heads up; if not in person, then definitely by phone. Namely, you’ll want to make sure your parents and siblings know as well as your best friend. Once they are in the know, have some fun!

Instead of simply changing your relationship status, consider a creative way to make the announcement.

What do you think of these engaging ideas?

Coffee Drinker? Take a selfie with your coffee cup that says, “Does this ring make me look engaged?” Make sure your left ring finger is showing!

Have pets? Incorporate them into an announcement with a “My mom and dad are getting married” or a “My people are planning a wedding” signs.

Glued to technology? Open your calendar feature on your iPhone to your upcoming wedding date. Take a picture of your engagement ring circling the date.

Talk to the hand! Write “I said yes” in the palm of your hand, and turn your engagement ring around. Take a picture!

The outdoorsy type? Incorporate a fishhook or fishing rod into the picture to announce you’ve caught your perfect match!

Get him involved. Take a photo of your favorite fella reading a wedding magazine (ideally, Forsyth Woman Engaged!)

Be a drama queen! Sport a pair of 3D glasses, and hold a bucket of popcorn with your engagement ring showing!

Why You Should Hire A Planner: Two Perspectives

hen it comes to wedding planners, statistics tell us only 19% of brides budget for a planner.

Yet, many brides regret that they didn’t. Unless you are a DIYer along the lines of Martha Stewart, a wedding planner is a wise investment for the most important day of your life. You want to cherish the memories and moments… not spend the morning of your wedding going through a checklist of to-do’s.

Meet Brooke and Katie… they got married within a year of each other. Brooke hired a wedding planner, whereas Katie did not.

The Girl Who Did By Brooke Eagle aving family friends who also run a successful event planning business made it a no-brainer for me to hire a planner. I knew they would do an amazing job to make sure our big day was stress-free.

While not every bride will deal with rain on her wedding day, every bride will deal with the POSSIBILITY of rain on her wedding day. It didn’t simply rain on our wedding day, we had a torrential downpour less than an hour before our outdoor ceremony was scheduled to start. I owe our ability to keep our cool and calm demeanor to our fabulous wedding planners. If we hadn’t had them there to maneuver 350+ guests back inside and completely rearrange our ceremony in less than 20 minutes, I’m not exactly sure what I would’ve done but the word “bridezilla” comes to mind. For this reason alone – the CHANCE of bad weather happening on your wedding day – I would recommend making the investment.

However, this is just scratching the surface of what they did for our wedding. We had meetings with the caterer, the florist, the rental company, the venue, the videographer, the DJ, etc. and it was so nice to have a planner with us to guide us during this process. They didn’t tell us what to do, but gave their experienced opinion on things they have seen work well and (just as importantly) things that didn’t work well. I would imagine it would be a little more than slightly intimidating to plan all this without someone who has planned weddings for several years.

Pinterest is great, but it certainly does not take the place of an experienced wedding planner. So, brides… for your sanity while planning your wedding and ESPECIALLY for your sanity on the day of your wedding, do yourself a favor and hire a wedding planner.

The Girl Who Didn’t By Katie Marsh or my wedding, I honestly just wanted to go to the justice of the peace. It was my husband who wanted the big, white wedding. I agreed, but under the one condition: the wedding planning had to be fun.

And it was. For the most part. We enjoyed the process of brainstorming ideas, but on the day before the wedding, things stopped being very fun. I was recovering from an unexpected bout of kidney stones, which had really put me behind. You can’t plan for things like that. And I truly wish I’d had someone there the day before and the day of the wedding.

The day before the wedding, I felt like someone had put everything on fast-forward and I couldn’t get to everything.

Our DIY centerpieces had been slightly mangled during transport and I was frantically trying to put things back together. Thank goodness for a very patient bridesmaid because when I threw the glue gun down in frustration and said, “I don’t care,” she took over and got things put together again.

I arrived at our rehearsal both overwhelmed and without our wedding music or a copy of the marriage license because I’d run all day trying to get everything done.

The wedding itself was fine, but I admittedly made some poor choices when it came to the reception, specifically asking friends to run music instead of hiring a DJ. I was trying so hard to be budget conscious that I made some decisions I regret. I wish I’d had a wedding planner to help me talk through some of these elements beforehand.

In hindsight, there are several things I would have done differently for my wedding. Hiring a professional to help organize things and give me peace of mind during a time of incredible stress would have been worth every penny!

Mencentivizing the Groom

hat he’s thinking: Got the ring, got the girl of my dreams and she said yes! “Cut! That’s a wrap!”

What she’s thinking: “Got the ring, got the man of my dreams, and we are just getting started!”

And there it is, men and women think differently. Oh, we agree on what’s really important, I mean he DID pick you right? After that, the waters get a little murky. The groom thinks he is at the bottom of his life checklist, while the bride is just getting warmed up. She has dreamt about her wedding, this ‘day of days,’ her whole life!

For her, being a bride is exciting and overwhelming. Getting the groom involved will require a little perspective and a lot of incentives.

Or “men-centives,” to be exact.

1. Make a List – Prioritize, Divide and Conquer Don’t be too surprised if your groom can’t get excited about colors, flowers, cake, guest lists and seating charts. No amount of cajoling, whining or bribing will work.

Men-centive: Register your lists online with Amazon, Target, Crate and Barrel, Williams Sonoma, Cigar Aficionado, Dick’s Sporting Goods (you decide) and he will be delighted to help.

3. Budget Be aware of your budget. Whether you are funding this event yourself or enjoying the fruits of another’s labor, be sensible. Talking about spending oodles of money on something unimportant to your partner is never attractive and creates unnecessary tension. Will it be filet mignon or beer and brats? Honeymoon on the Riviera or a week at Dollywood? Music Band, DJ or Uncle Al and his Magnificent Accordion? As a couple, decide what is important to you and stay within the budget.

Men-centive: Invite him to plan the honeymoon destination and let it be a surprise to you.

4. Don’t Try to Do It All

Men-centive: Discuss which items on your list are important to him.

Divide the decisions accordingly. Shoot for 80/20, if he will tackle 20%, that’s great! Besides, moms, sisters and bridesmaids will make this more fun for you, too.

No one likes a martyr or a bride too tired to enjoy the day. Remember, this is HIS PARTY, TOO.

2. Gift Registry – Who doesn’t like shopping all day for free stuff?

With humor, festivities, and fun you can set the tone for a wonderful life together. Sure, weddings can be complicated – marriage can be complicated – but with a few minor adjustments, these can be the best times of your lives. There is no right or wrong way to plan a wedding –this is your day and should be uniquely yours. Relax and remember to pace yourself. After all, your happily-ever-after is not a sprint but a marathon.

Easy answer? Men. Have you ever taken a man shopping? They see it, buy it and are out in five minutes. For him, the idea of spending the day in stores looking at china patterns and filling out lists is equal to our idea of watching cricket matches… pure tedium. He may have preferences, though.

Pre-Wedding Prep For a Beautiful You!

ven though you’ll be blessed with that unmistakable bridal “glow” on the big day, you’ll still want to follow some prewedding beauty basics to make sure you really do look and feel your best when it’s time to make a grand entrance.

• Stay true to your natural beauty and your own personal style.

This is not the time for drastic new makeup colors or trendy haircuts. When you look back on these photographs in 30 years, you want to see classic and timeless!

• Keep your same hair stylist, the person who is most familiar with your hair and face shape. If you’re marrying out of town and won’t be near your regular stylist, visit the salon well in advance for a trial run and make sure that same stylist will be reserved for you the morning of your wedding.

• If your hair is suddenly dull and lackluster, consider having a deep conditioning treatment about four weeks before the wedding.

Also, watch what you eat – vitamin B can be a good supplement for “tired” hair.

• For specific skin issues, even acne, start your pre-wedding facials six months in advance and NEVER have a facial within two weeks of the big day (red or irritated is not the look you’re trying to achieve!).

• Drink lots of water. Period.

• For your skin, hair and everything else – and most of all your energy level – be diligent about getting enough sleep. It’s tricky to juggle planning, parties and work, and still slip in a good seven or eight hours, but this is the time to make it a priority.

• Consider taking a multi-vitamin daily if it’s not already part of your health and wellness routine. Omega fish oils are also excellent for improving the look of both your skin and hair.

• While you’re moisturizing your face and body, don’t overlook your hands. Lather on hand cream before bed every night while you drift off thinking about how many people will be admiring that shiny new wedding ring on your finger!

• Even though you’ll enjoy the pampering of a bridal manicure and pedicure, pay attention to your feet each night before then as well, with lavish cream for your heels and toes after exfoliating.

Keep your nail color classic, too – a sheer nude or blush pink is flattering on all skin tones and with all shades of white (as in your gown!).

• Keep your makeup, well, real. You may want the application to be a bit more dramatic for photography purposes, but keep the real, natural you shining through. This is not a bright blue eye shadow kind of day.

• Don’t forget to pack a makeup “touch up” kit for the big day with just the basics, and maybe a purse-size bottle of your favorite fragrance to dab on just before you head for the honeymoon.

• Trial runs are a must! That goes for not only hair and makeup, but also for undergarments and shoes. Practice walking in your shoes – standing tall and straight – and try a twirl or two while wearing your veil, just to be sure.

Wedding Photos: "What Do I Do Now?"

recently attended a house party at the home of a newlywed couple.

I had been a guest at the beautiful wedding last year and, as I drove over, I smiled thinking about how pretty it all was – the colors, the flowers, all the details and loving family and friends.

I

During the party, I realized there was no evidence of their marriage (aside from the wedding rings) anywhere in the house. I asked my hostess if she had any wedding pictures to show. “Yes, of course!” she exclaimed as she pulled out her phone. “They're all beautiful,” she continued, as she stood against a blank wall in her new home.

“I just don't know what to do with them.”

The months are printed on 5x7, #120 sturdy paper stock. After the year is over, you can take your saved months and use them for other purposes. For example, create a collage, frame them, or mount them on your bulletin board at work. By all means, recycle them in some creative way.

My friend I mentioned earlier is now on month three with her calendar. Her plan is to mount all 12 months in a single frame once the year is through. I also received a lovely thank you note from her for my ideas. I have it on my fridge.

Ahhh! What to do with all the memory-filled images from a most significant day in your life…

Many couples these days hire talented photographers for their wedding, purchase a disc of digital files with copyrights, plug them all over Facebook, keep them on their phone, but forget to surround themselves with tangible printed memories of a beautiful day in their lives. Like my friend, they just don't know what all they can do.

Here are two great ideas to consider immediately after your wedding.

Think about this before your wedding day, so you are already in the mindset as soon as you get your images from your photographer.

Idea One: Create a thank you note. You will write a hundred thank you notes after the wedding (or at least you should!). Your family and friends will appreciate your thank you note and may even put it on their refrigerator, if it includes a few images of your day. Your local printer, many online services and even the talented photographer you invested in, can help you design and produce a card that you will be excited to send out. Include an image of the two of you and some flowers, the cake, and any of the other details you spent the last nine months creating.

Idea Two: Create a calendar. You only need 12 images and can take this to your local Walmart or other printer to produce a beautiful, custom calendar for your home. I like the calendars at Artifact Uprising for $29.99. They are rolling months, so no need to wait until January, and they attach to your fridge with a magnet on back.

Priceless Photos: Moments Not to Miss!

ears from now when you skim through your wedding photos or pause to admire an engagement portrait hanging in your home, a flood of memories will return. That includes everything from the moment he slipped on your engagement ring (and many grooms are secretly having their proposals photographed as well!) to the champagne toast you shared in the limousine. You’ll suddenly think back to each moment in between and realize some of the most romantic memories are often the simplest and smallest.

We’ve got some ideas on what not to miss!

• Number one rule: Besides the traditional (yes, posed) family and wedding party shots, put candid photos at the top of your photographer’s list. A smile, a tear, a hand reaching out, an impromptu hug or even the wind catching the bride’s veil … those are often the sweetest expressions of the love you are celebrating!

• Engagement photos are wonderful for reflecting your personalities, and the options are endless: outside the restaurant of your first date, strolling the lawn in front of your new home or at a favorite local landmark. If you love the outdoors, schedule your photo session at a farm or in a park.

• Schedule a photographer for your gown shopping day and let them capture your real emotions as you search for – and find! – your dream gown.

• While you’re putting together your honeymoon trousseau, consider letting your photographer shoot some “boudoir” images of you – something for your groom’s eyes only, of course!

• Pet lovers, don’t miss a photo opportunity with your dog on the big day, especially if he’s sporting a cute tie or flower collar!

• Include your makeup stylist putting the finishing touches on your wedding look on the photo must-have list.

• Capture your mother sharing her diamond earrings as your “something borrowed.”

• Document the sentimental moment you and the groom receive gifts from each other the morning of the wedding.

• Don’t miss this if you’re truly blessed with three generations (or even four) gathering for the big day: you, your mother and your grandmother.

• It goes without saying, but your “first look” moment may be the most special image of all.

emorializing your wedding is important. There will be so much happening on the big day that you won’t remember it all, no matter how much you try. What better way to recall the feelings of the day and the special times you shared than with your own video?

Beyond having a video of your wedding, there are several ways you can share a video memory with friends and family.

Same-day-edit: Once your videographer has filmed your wedding, have them prepare a short video edited to share at your reception.

Cinematic style: Have a cinematic story of your wedding with a mixture of color and black and white footage. Using a mix of techniques will add emphasis and drama to key moments of your ceremony. Capture the details and include the sentimental aspects, as well as perhaps some outtake moments.

Inspired save-the-date: There’s no reason not to use a video before the wedding. Use your favorite movie or sport as an inspiration to create a memorable save-the-date message. Recreate a favorite scene to share the news/date and let that be the trailer for the actual wedding video.

Stop motion save-the-date: Using photographs, create a chronology to announce your engagement and save-the-date. This would be perfect for childhood sweethearts planning their big day. This would also be fun to share during the reception.

Proposal video: Capture the “she said yes” moment. Hire a professional to film your proposal from a discrete location. This is a unique way to begin a wedding video and will allow you to recall the nerves, specialness and emotion at the moment of popping the question.

Love story interview: This may be a more staged filming, but would be a great way to tell your own love story from both of your points of view – how you met, some special moments, the proposal story, how you’re feeling as the wedding approaches.

Wedding trailer: Have your videographer design a short (two to three minute video) of the wedding to share with friends and family on your web page.

Documentary style: Using artistic creativity and sound bites, create a “you were there” film of your wedding. This style allows for more editorial license in preserving your wedding and may not be for everyone.

Specialized video can be costly. Discuss the expenses associated with designing the video of your dream day with your videographer to ensure the final product is within your budget and meets your expectations. The ultimate goal is to preserve the moment of your wedding in time, to share for years to come.

Wedding Flowers

• Spring/Summer – Think about an English garden with lovely mixed blooms of colors. Typical flowers may be sweet peas, garden roses or tulips. The colors may still be pastel or the vibrant colors of spring and summer.

• Fall/Winter – Ferns, foxgloves, mums and more greenery with deeper, richer colors.

Country: If your wedding is going to be outdoors with a country theme, there are a number of options you may not have considered.

Rather than a bouquet of flowers, perhaps a wheat sheaf bouquet would complement the theme. Include some lavender with burlap wrapping. Perfect for a country, outdoorsy wedding.

Other Options: If you march to a different beat and want a look all your own, these may strike your fancy.

• Flower Headpieces – Who says you have to carry your flowers?

Have a wreath of flowers made as a headpiece. Or, wear a gardenia in your hair.

• Rather than flowers, carry a bouquet made of brooches. This may include a few sentimental pieces mixed with inexpensive brooches in your color theme.

Roses: There are about 3,000 varieties of roses. Luckily, florists usually select from three major categories: • Hybrid tea roses, which are more uniform in size and are the selection for most commercial florists.

• Spray roses, which have multiple blooms per spray.

• Garden roses, which are the large, fragrant open blooms, and also the most expensive.

Tulips: There are also three top varieties of tulips.

• Dutch tulips, which come in a large variety of colors • French tulips, which have large tapered blooms.

Scentless, their colors range from pink to blue, purple, or burgundy.

White roses or calla lilies with some delicate greenery are simple but timeless.

Fresh from the Garden: This may have two distinct looks depending on the time of year for your wedding. The floral arrangements have a less structured look, more like someone picked and randomly arranged them.

Lily of the Valley: These are most available in the spring and can be quite expensive at other times of the year. Typically white, although there is a rosy-pink color which is considered rare.

Peony: There are two main types of peony – single or double blooms.

Stephanotis: The flower means “marital happiness.” The blooms have a star shape and are available year-round. Each bloom must be individually wired and can raise the cost of this selection.

Trends in the coming year incorporate locally grown florals with a fresh garden look for centerpieces. Berries and seasonal fruits are a growing trend for centerpieces as well. Colors range from pastel to rich, vibrant hues. Less structured arrangements and more variety offer something for every wedding.

If you are planning to have music on your special day, here are some things to consider:

• If you are having a church wedding, do not assume that when you book the date it automatically includes the organist. You will need to verify that the organist is available.

• If you choose not to have the organist play, or want him along with a string quartet or other types of music, then you will need to coordinate that with all involved. If possible, ask each musician to be at the rehearsal.

• Vocalist during the ceremony? Is she providing her own accompaniment or is it something you will need to plan for?

• For an outdoor ceremony, the setting may be the determining factor on the type of music that will work.

• If you are having live music, make sure you have heard the group do not go on someone’s recommendation alone. When hiring a band, make sure they can play the special songs on your list.

• Choosing the pieces you want played during the ceremony is very important, especially if there are definite songs that are meaningful to you. If you do not have any particular pieces in mind, research music on the Internet or ask those who will be providing it for suggestions.

• In planning the music for the reception, keep in mind the tone you want to set. If you have a theme for your wedding, it can set the mood for the type of music you will want to hear.

• While guests are arriving, eating and socializing, soft background music is always a good choice.

• Choose carefully the songs you want played during any special dances you are having - bride and groom’s first dance, bride 64

• With either choice, work out the particulars - how long will they perform before taking a break; will there be other music played during that time; do they expect to have food and drinks provided; if they have set hours to play, is there an extra overtime charge besides their hourly rate if you add time; and do they need any special equipment provided at the venue?

• It is imperative to have signed, binding contracts - an agreement over the phone means nothing if a better gig comes along. Check in with them at least a week before your wedding to make sure everything is still set. Most importantly, have fun – once all the planning and details have come together, and you are married, it is time to relax, smile and party!

Once You’ve Found the Dress…

By Meghan Corbett s a bride, you will be asked time and time again about your dress. Have you been dress shopping yet? What kind of dress do you want?

Who are you going to take with you to try on dresses? What is your budget? Have you thought about wearing your mother’s dress? The questions continue, but choosing the right wedding dress should be a very personal experience that you share with those closest to you, without feeling pressured to bring along anyone who may make you second guess your opinions, or who may make you feel badly about your limited budget or physical imperfections.

While you will face endless questions about the dress, you will be asked very few questions about the rest of your planned attire. Though it would be incredibly inappropriate for someone to ask you about your wedding day undergarments, it is something you should give some serious thought to.

You want to be comfortable, but elegant, and you want to make sure whatever you choose will work with your dress.

If you’ve chosen something form fitting, you need to think about the best way to hide underwear lines such as with seamless underwear or a thong. If you’ve chosen a plunging neckline, make sure your bra will not be showing; or have cups sewn into your dress, so you can ditch the bra all together.

You’ll then move on to the shoes. You want shoes that are comfortable yet special. Make sure you have your dress altered while wearing your shoes to ensure the length will be just right. You don’t want your dress to be too short on your wedding day because you decided to switch to higher heels at the last minute.

The best way to keep it all straight is by not waiting too late to make decisions. In many cases, wedding dress boutiques suggest you leave several months between choosing your dress and your wedding date. This leaves time for the dress to come in, alterations to be done, several fittings, bridal portraits, etc. The best plan is to choose all the accessories you’ll need on your big day close to the time you choose your dress, so it will all be set ahead of time. Many bridal salons offer many of these products, so you can try them on along with the dress. If not, you can try any lingerie store and bring your dress along with you.

Once you have all of these details figured out, you’ll be able to focus on more important things, like deciding which items will be considered old, new, borrowed and blue! Hint: Most brides choose a blue garter to “hide” the blue while still sticking with tradition. You can also include blue hydrangeas in your bouquet or a pale blue barrette in your hair.

nce you are engaged, one of the first tasks you’ll think about is shopping for your wedding dress. It is probably the most important fashion decision you will ever make, and you’ve undoubtedly been thinking about it for years. Strapless, ball gown, ivory or white, silk, satin or tulle? There are many things to consider before even stepping into a bridal boutique because the choices can be overwhelming.

Once you’ve thought about the styles you think are right for you, you need to consider who will accompany you on this very special outing!

Everyone you bring will have an opinion, so make sure the people along for the ride are supportive and willing to let you make this decision on your own if that’s what you want.

Most people bring their moms, sisters, grandmothers, close female cousins, perhaps a best friend and sometimes the mother of the groom. Tradition keeps any males from coming along – most brides don’t want their future husbands to see their dress before the big day, and a growing number of brides don’t want their dads to see the dress early either. Besides, what do men know about wedding dresses anyway?

No matter whom you choose to bring with you, make sure those people will only enhance your day positively. You don’t want to bring 68

your crazy aunt who puts a damper on everything or your sister who looks for any excuse to make fun of you. Your wedding is not just about that day itself – it is about the time between your engagement and wedding day when you get to focus on yourself and all the things you want for one of the most important events of your life.

You also do not need to invite everyone in your address book.

If you only take your mom, that’s fine; if you only take a close friend, that’s fine, too. You know what is best for you, especially if you are paying for the dress yourself!

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice, either. Ask friends and family about what they did, who they brought and how they would change the experience they had to make it better. You’ll remember the moment you found the perfect dress for the rest of your life – so make it great!

Dressing the Bridesmaids

our bridesmaids are your closest friends and relatives, so it is absolutely essential to think of each and every one of them before choosing the dress they will wear on your big day. You want them to be comfortable with every element, from the style to the price.

Those with smaller wedding parties have a much easier time choosing a design that will suit everyone, while those with large parties may need to consider different heights, body types, budget constraints, etc.

Many modern brides are allowing their bridesmaids to have a little say in the matter by giving them a designer and a color and allowing them to choose the exact details of the dress. For example, I was recently in a wedding where one of my dearest friends had nine bridesmaids. We ranged in height from 5’0” to nearly 6’0”, one girl was about eight months pregnant and some were more modest than others. To satisfy us all, she chose a collection of six dresses from a single designer and asked us all to choose our favorite of the six from the same boutique in Winston-Salem. The process was so easy, and because we all purchased from the same boutique, we were able to take advantage of a bridal party discount. She picked up dresses for those who lived out of town, so they would be able to get them altered in plenty of time.

We were all able to choose a dress that we would wear again, have it custom fit and were all so happy with the result! It can be very hard to satisfy a large group like ours, but she did it perfectly! She also gave us beautiful earrings and nail polish for the big day, so we would all match, and no one would worry about what accessories to wear.

When cost is a major issue, many brides decide on a more simple approach. I’ve seen brides who decided to allow their bridesmaids to pick out their own dresses with stipulations like black, strapless, knee-length and satin. This allows your bridesmaids to spend whatever they can because it gives them a simple set of guidelines to follow.

If you choose a color such as red or blue, you need to give your bridesmaids a color swatch as those colors can vary greatly in hue.

You most likely know this group of women better than anyone, and they should all be there to help you through the process. If any of them repeatedly cause you more stress than offer support, it is not unheard of to disinvite them to be a part of your wedding. It is your big day after all, and ultimately, you need to be happy with every decision that is made!

To Tuxedo or Not Tuxedo? That is the Question!

ith minor exceptions, such as pastel colored polyester tuxedos with contrasting trim from the 1970s, the formal tuxedo has made few changes throughout its long history. What has changed in more recent years is what the groom will wear on his wedding day.

Besides a military uniform, no longer is a tuxedo the only acceptable form of dress. Below are guidelines to help you decide what might be the best choice based on the time of day and formality of the occasion:

• A semi-formal evening wedding has several options. The groom may go with the formal wear as described above with the exception of the gloves. Or, he may choose to wear a white pleated or formal shirt, black vest or cummerbund and bow tie to match or complement. The groom may also decide to wear a classic black tuxedo, or for a summer wedding, a white dinner jacket.

• When planning a formal daytime wedding (before 6 pm), it is traditional for the groom to wear a morning coat. This is a gray cutaway coat paired with gray striped trousers, pearl gray waistcoat or vest, white shirt with either a wing-collar or lay-down collar, ascot or black and gray striped tie, and black kid-style, smooth-toe shoes. Gray gloves, top hat, and spats may be used to accessorize.

• If your wedding is a beach or similar destination wedding, a khaki-colored or light gray suit may be more in keeping with the theme. However, the important thing to keep in mind is what will work best with the bride's dress. If she is wearing a formal, bead and jewel-encrusted gown, then the groom will look out of place in a seersucker, linen, or similar type suit. If a suit is opted for, then a more formal, dark color is appropriate.

• For a semi-formal daytime wedding, the dress can be the same as a formal wedding, with the exceptions being a white formal shirt, vest or cummerbund to match the coat, bow-tie or striped tie instead of ascot, and only gray gloves to accessorize if so desired.

Today it is also acceptable for the groom to wear a tuxedo to an afternoon wedding. The tuxedo should be black or dark gray.

For a contemporary look, navy blue is also acceptable.

• Three months or more before the big day, the groom should meet with the tailor or rental shop associate to choose his attire.

It is important to have the right fit in whatever style is chosen.

• For a formal evening wedding (after 6pm), the traditional attire is a black tailcoat and matching pants, white pique wing-collared shirt with a matching vest or waistcoat, white bow tie and black patent leather smooth-toe shoes. White gloves may be worn to accessorize.

There are other criteria to consider in selecting your wedding attire:

• If the groom and groomsmen are buying suits off the rack, it is vital to have fittings done to make sure they are properly tailored.

• When selecting a suit option, select accessories at the same time.

The groom may want to stand out from the groomsmen by choosing a different tie and vest. Also, the groom should convey the appropriate color and style of shoes and socks, as well as any other accessories he would like his groomsmen to wear.

• Always consult the bride for her opinion!

Putting it in Print: Wedding Stationery

f you are eloping or only inviting a very limited number of people to your wedding, you may not need any or all of the stationery options that are available. However, for most weddings there are many items that need to be considered. Today, with save-the-dates, invitations, response cards, escort cards, and thank you notes, along with other printed material to choose from, making decisions can seem like an overwhelming task. If budget is a concern, choose what is most important to have printed professionally and what can be handled personally.

The following are tips to consider when selecting your wedding stationery: • Save-the-dates are becoming quite common. This is one item that can be a do-it-yourself project and is a place for the budget-conscious to save some money. As this is the first printed information guests will see, it is nice to keep it in the same color scheme, theme, or destination as the wedding itself. Whether having them done or doing them yourself, ideas are abundant on the Internet.

Save-the-dates are sent anywhere from 4-6 months in advance.

• The formal invitation is the most important of all the wedding stationery as it sets the tone for the event. Everything that follows should continue in the same theme as the invitation. Included with the invitation will be the outer envelope, the unsealed inner envelope, the response card with an addressed and stamped envelope, and possibly a reception card if the reception is to be held elsewhere. Maps and information on hotels may also be included. Invitations are sent 6-8 weeks prior to the date 10 weeks for guests coming from abroad.

• The response card is next in importance after the invitation. This card is filled out and returned by the addressee, letting you know who they are and if they will be attending. It is a good idea to put a light pencil number on the back of the response card that coordinates with the guest list. This makes it easier to keep up with who has responded – especially if they forget to write in their name. The response card may also contain the guest’s choice for their main course if that is an option. There should also be a “please respond by” date. This number is key information to have for catering, rental, seating, favors, and printing of other materials.

• A ceremony program is another item you may choose to do yourself. If marrying in a church, you should check to make sure if there are specific guidelines you need to follow before proceeding.

For other venues, be creative while staying with your theme.

• Escort cards let your guests know at which table they will be seated. If you are not having assigned seating, you will not need escort cards. Here again, you may choose to make your own. You may find creative ways to display them that will show your guests you thought of every little detail.

• As wedding gifts begin to arrive, you will need to have thank you notes at the ready. You may choose to have personalized notes or buy them pre-made.

Before you start looking for your wedding stationery, determine the type of wedding you will be having – themed, destination, formal, casual, etc. – as well as your paper needs, and strive for consistency throughout. Be mindful of what you have budgeted. Meet early with vendors and give yourself plenty of time to proof, order, and address.

For Better or for Worse: Personalizing the Commitment

Standing in front of family and friends as they witness you make one of the most important commitments of your life can be overwhelming on many different fronts. While some couples choose a standard ceremony, others personalize their commitment by writing their own vows. For these couples, this can be one of the most stressful parts of the entire wedding planning process. If you are considering writing your own vows, here are some guidelines to follow:

• Give yourself plenty of time. You’ll want time to reflect, write, and rewrite over several weeks. Begin writing early on and give yourself time to think about what you really want to say. No one wants to be scrambling on the eve of the big day to find the right words, so set aside time to write in the wedding planning process.

• Talk it over with your officiant – you’ll want to get his or her approval. As well, he or she may have some suggestions, guidelines, or sample vows you can review.

• Find some examples that you BOTH like. You can find sample vows on-line or use resources like Baker’s Wedding Handbook for Pastors which outlines vows from various dominations. You can use the examples you find for ideas, or modify the language and use them as your own.

• Decide on a framework. You want to be on the same page in regards to tone, format, and length. Many vows seem to follow the “reminisce, declare, promise” format, but there are myriad styles and formats you can use.

• Write, write, write. Think of everything you might want to say and get it down on paper before going back and trimming the excess. Look at what you have and see if there is a natural flow, organization, or pattern to your thoughts. Eliminate anything that doesn’t fit with the agreed upon tone or theme. Aim for 2-3 minutes of actual vows. Remember – you’ll be nervous and may not be up for a long soliloquy.

• Practice your vows. A lot. On the big day you’re bound to be anxious and just a little bit overwhelmed. The more practice you do, the more comfortable you’re likely to feel.

If you don’t want your partner to hear your vows until the day of, have a trusted friend listen to both sets of vows and make sure they are cohesive. You can also ask for feedback from your officiant who is an expert on such matters.

• Make multiple copies. Print several copies and give them to the groomsmen to hold, email them to yourself, and/or take a photo of them on your phone – you really can’t have too many. That way there’s no possibility they might be misplaced on the big day.

• Enjoy the process. You’ve spent months working towards something that will be over quite quickly, so slow down, take a deep breath, look your spouse-to-be in the eye, and say your vows with all of the conviction in your heart.

“I Do,” But How?

By Tabatha Renegar our wedding day will be filled with memorable moments and the joy of seeing well-planned details transformed into a stunning production. And yet, when you really break it down, the only thing required to become married that day is the 15-30 minutes you and your fiancé spend at the altar, under the huppa, or before jumping a broom.

Just like the many choices you have for every aspect of your celebration – from catering to cakes, DJs to dances – you have choices to make about what will be done to take you from Miss to Mrs., and Mister to Married!

The following is a checklist of the components that make up a wedding ceremony. Within each of these categories, there are multiple opportunities for you to personalize and include the touches that will make your ceremony special for you and the love of your life.

• The Procession - Typically, once your guests are seated, the following order of arrival is followed: Mother of the Bride, escorted by one of the Groomsmen The Groomsmen The Best Man The Groom Officiant (although often he/she may already be at the altar) Bridesmaids Maid/Matron of Honor Flower Girl and/or Ring bearers Father of the Bride and Bride Your Officiant’s Opening Comments – Whether it begins as so many have with “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…” or something less traditional, this will be the statement that starts your ceremony and begins your transformation from a single soul to being one half of a new whole.

The Vows – Books could be written about this part of your wedding day alone! From biblical options to personal vows written by the two of you, or poetry and song. No matter what, this is where you make your promises to each other, in front of

witnesses, to have and to hold, for better or for worse. How you say it is up to you, but be sure to devote plenty of time and consideration to the words chosen. They will carry you throughout the days of your marriage and can be reflected on to give you strength and hope during the inevitable challenges being married will bring.

Wedding Ring Exchange – Symbolizing the unending circle of eternity, the giving of wedding bands to each other dates back nearly 3,000 years and remains an important part of ceremonies today.

The practice of wearing wedding rings on the left hand, on the finger beside your pinky, is credited to Egyptians who believed there is a vein in that finger connected directly to the heart.

The Pronouncement – This part of the ceremony seals the deal!

“I now pronounce you husband and wife.” Or wife and wife or husband and husband. While the titles may vary and doors have opened to a variety of pronouncements, the premise is the same.

It’s done. You are committed for life to the person that makes you feel complete. You are now married!

The Kiss – Ah, the kiss! Memorialized and dramatized in hundreds of movies throughout the years, with dips and hugs and cheers from the guests. Be sure your officiant plans to include it, as not all will automatically! And while we like to think it will come naturally, the two of you really should practice your first married kiss. Not just to be sure you’re on the same page for the style and length, but for the fun of it!

The Recessional – Following your processional in reverse order, now the fun begins! The two of you turn to face your loved ones as a married couple and lead your wedding party and guests to the next part of the day and the rest of your lives!

Congratulations on your engagement and best wishes with your wedding plans! Be careful not to become overwhelmed with the plethora of details and expectations. But when you do, try to remember that everything about why you got engaged in the first place will come to fruition in those special moments when you stand before your most beloved family and friends and say “I do.”

Honoring the Departed

Weddings are a joyous occasion, but if you’ve lost a loved one, they can also bring a sense of loss in the person’s absence. Here are a few ways to remember and honor the departed on your special day.

1. Wear a memento. Wearing a handkerchief or a piece jewelry that belonged to your loved one can make that person feel closer.

2. Save a seat. Set aside a place of honor for the deceased, symbolic of the place of prominence the person held in your life.

3. Display a photo. Place a photo of your loved one on a small table at the reception or ceremony site so that others can also see the importance of the person to you.

4. Propose a toast. Give a toast in the person’s memory, incorporating a favorite quote or saying, or reading from the person’s Bible or favorite book.

6. Play a song. Dedicate and play your loved one’s favorite song during the ceremony or reception.

However you decide to honor your loved ones, you can make their presence felt in a tangible and memorable way so that they are a part of your joyous occasion.

A Festive Start: The Cocktail Hour

hile you’re waiting breathlessly to make your entrance as husband and wife, your guests are gathering and the excitement for the reception is growing! Get the party started with food and drinks that will set the tone for what’s to come, in a setting that invites your favorite people to relax and enjoy themselves!

• The cocktail hour is a great place – and a more relaxed location – to display your guest register or a framed and matted photo of you two for guests to sign their good wishes. It’s also perfect for the name card table, where guests can locate their table numbers if you’re having a formal seated dinner.

• Never, ever, ever leave your wedding guests waiting with nothing to drink or nibble on! If you’re still busy with photos, make sure they are pointed in the direction of the cocktail location (a charming chalkboard with calligraphy directions is always a nice touch).

• If you plan on family photos after the ceremony, it’s wise to designate a wedding party member or other close friend who’s familiar with the guest list to mingle as an informal “host or hostess” until you arrive. It’s also good to have “helpers” available to keep the flow going as guests move from bar area to hors d’oeuvres.

• Select a “signature” cocktail to be served – maybe the peach Bellini you shared on your first date, his favorite highball or your favorite sangria. Go the extra step and set up a table for each with a decorative sign that tells why it’s your favorite, or if there’s a great story behind your choice! Flavored vodka stations are also becoming popular, as are displays of craft beers, especially if there’s a favorite brewed locally.

• Plan a few non-alcoholic options as well, such as flavored teas, fresh-squeezed lemonade or a virgin fruit punch.

• Cute cocktail napkins are an absolute must or maybe even personalized paper coasters. Add your new married monogram and order more than needed so you can use them later for entertaining in your new home (see your favorite stationer or gift store for fun monogramming options!).

• If you’re serving something fruity – alcoholic or otherwise – include colorful straws (and tiny umbrellas if you wish) just for fun.

• Don’t overlook music for your cocktail hour. A string quartet is a lovely prelude to the bigger party later, or a duo of jazz musicians.

• Keep the layout open and flowing with easy access to food and beverages so that guests aren’t immediately just waiting in line for something to drink. If you have wait staff serving your specialty drink right when guests walk in (along with ice water if it’s a warm day), the crowd will move more freely and everyone will feel more at ease, instead of scrambling to line up at the bar.

• Have comfortable seating available, such as fabric-covered banquettes with colorful throw pillows for guests who prefer to sit while sampling the passed appetizers.

• Remember – your cocktail hour (and it typically ends up being longer!) is the first chance many of your guests will have to meet and greet, so before they sit down to dinner, it’s the perfect place for everyone to unwind, mingle and chat about what a beautiful bride you were!

All About Rentals

y this stage in your planning you’ve discovered the value of hiring a professional wedding planner who’ll steer you in the right direction on a multitude of decisions – including renting some of the wonderful accents that will make your celebration shine. As with all your vendors, have a contract with your rental company that not only details pricing, but also specific delivery and pick-up times. You might be surprised at some of the unique items that can be yours – just for the day.

• For a natural look – especially if you’re looking to create a garden feel – tables that are custom designed for live trees to stand in the center can create a fabulous look (you’ll need custom table cloths for these as well).

• Consider an arch of flowers or greenery to mark the spot where you’ll say your vows. Rental companies can supply the arch or your floral designer can create a masterpiece with cut blooms and garlands of greenery.

• You’ll likely hear the term “soft seating” when it comes to designing your reception décor, which means setting up small “lounge” areas where guests can gather with their glass and a plate of hors d’oeuvres. Covered banquettes are perfect for creating this extra seating – and the fabric possibilities for covering them are endless!

• You’ll need nice linens to complement your theme, which can include colored or patterned table cloths (or solid cloths with decorative overlays), along with both cocktail and dinner size napkins. Ditto for silverware, glassware, dinner plates and chargers if they aren’t included by your caterer.

• Rental companies or the lighting technicians they partner with can also transform a plain space into a fairytale setting with just a little draping of sheer white fabric. They can also dress up a simple tent with the addition of café lights, colorful Chinese lanterns hanging throughout the tent or even a glorious chandelier perched from the center of the tent ceiling.

• Some couples favor natural wood chairs for guests, pristine white chairs for a garden setting or gold Chiavari chairs for a slightly more elegant venue. For extra luxury, add lace or fabric chair covers that enhance your wedding theme.

• Don’t overlook the necessities: portable toilets are easily rented – from the basic set-up to more luxurious models with sinks and lighting. Consider covering the entire restroom area with a small tent if you’d rather have them away from view.

• Have a little fun by renting a photo booth for the reception! A few well-chosen props and accessories can make for great fun that night and wonderful memories later.

• If you’re marrying outdoors, the venue may already have tables and chairs included in your space rental, but always ask exactly what they have available. If not, they can probably offer you a good referral for a rental company.

• For your church wedding, consider renting tall silver candelabra, along with a Unity Candle if the two of you want to include your parents in lighting two candles to form one new family.

• When it’s time to turn up the music, you’ll want a safe and comfortable area for dancing, and various versions of dance floors can also be rented. Adding a specialty dance floor is typically a better choice than dancing on carpet or even in grass.

At the Bar: Cost Effective Ways of Managing the Bar

urprisingly, one of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make about your big day is what type of beverages you will offer to your guests at the reception. Do you go old-school with a bowl of punch, limit to beer and sodas, or go all out with an open bar? Whichever route you choose will have a vastly different effect on your budget. If you have your heart set on an open bar, but you are worried about cost, there are several things you can do to manage the final tab, many of which will be unknown to your guests.

1. Ask your venue if they offer different levels for the open bar. If your plan is to allow your guests to order mixed cocktails, you may be able to cut back by using cheaper brands of liquor. Most people won’t notice, and it will keep the totals much lower than with high caliber liquors.

2. Establish a set price for the open bar. For example, if you don’t want to spend more than $5,000 on the bar, make sure that is known. Once you are getting close to the $5,000 mark, have someone give you the heads up and allow you to make the decision about whether to increase the limit or ask them to do a last call for drinks, at which point you can switch to just beer and wine.

3. Only offer cocktails during cocktail hour. Give your guests an hour to enjoy liquor drinks, but switch to beer, wine and champagne once the reception begins.

4. Create one or two signature cocktails, but no open bar.

This will allow your guests to have a cocktail, but it will keep heavier drinkers from taking advantage of multiple choices and drinking throughout the night.

5. Limit champagne to the toast portion of the reception. Based on how many guests you expect, purchase enough for each person to have one glass, and then revert back to beer and wine.

You can also save money by serving sparkling wine instead of champagne, or filling the glasses halfway instead of ¾ full.

6. Consider an earlier wedding. Your guests won’t drink as much during a day wedding as they will at night.

7. Pay per person and not per drink. If your venue will allow this option, it could save you money if you know you have a lot of friends who like to drink coming to your big celebration. Just the opposite, if you know your guests will not indulge in the alcohol, pay per drink instead of per person.

8. Offer non-alcoholic drinks that sound fun and different! Have them available like you would a signature cocktail so that some guests go for those instead of the alcoholic beverages.

Get Me to the Church On Time

ow are you getting to the church and how are you and your new spouse leaving the reception? If you’re booking a car or other means of transportation, plan to reserve it at least six months, preferably nine months, in advance. Depending on your wedding date, you may be competing for transportation with proms or other bridal parties during peak wedding season. It’s also a good idea to visit the rental location to take a look at your transportation, to be sure your vision matches and will work well with your wedding theme.

For getting to your wedding, be sure to plan an additional 20 to 30 minutes to allow for traffic. Plan for enough vehicles for the wedding party. Take into consideration the dresses you and your bridal party will be wearing; you may need more vehicles than normal. No one wants to arrive rumpled, especially you.

There are so many options when it comes to transportation. You and your new spouse can get to the reception and leave in any number of styles: White Stretch Limo: If you’re a traditionalist, this is it – the white stretch limo with all the amenities. Or, still in the limo family, a town car or stretch SUV.

Service Vehicles: If you or your spouse are in a public service career field, perhaps you could use a fire truck or police car for your get-away.

Other Options: Consider the sports you enjoy and use that as your transportation. Caution – be sure your dress will work or plan to change into another outfit for your getaway.

Golfers: Take off in a golf cart.

Motorcycle or Scooter: Decorate the helmet and go.

Tandem Bike: Ride off into the sunset on a bicycle built for two.

Helicopter: What a spectacular getaway!

Shuttle: If you have a large number of guests to transport, consider a charter bus, party bus, or even a school bus.

Hit the water (who needs roads): If your wedding is on or near water, how about a . . .

Rolls Royce: A new or antique Rolls fits well with a formal, evening wedding. Arrive and depart in elegance and style.

• Speedboat departure

Vintage: Do you or your spouse have a favorite car from your past? How about a vintage Mustang, VW, muscle car, Model T or even a vintage pick-up truck? You may find an owner happy to drive you to and from your reception. Check with local car clubs. They get to show off their car and you get a cool ride.

Horse-drawn Carriage: For an outdoor or country themed wedding, a horse-drawn carriage is a perfect fit. You may need to confirm carriage permits on roads in some areas.

Packing for the Honeymoon

ith all the chaos surrounding the wedding day, packing for your honeymoon may be a complete afterthought, but it shouldn’t be! Take it from someone who left all of her make-up in her “wedding day bag” and had to stop on the way to the airport the next day at 7am to buy the essentials – you don’t want to forget something important! Especially because many people choose a somewhat remote location for the most romantic trip of their lives…and those places don’t always have a Target or a make-up counter at the mall nearby.

You should know your honeymoon destination months in advance, so you can add your packing checklist to the list of things to do ahead of time. You can even pack WAY ahead of time if you are going somewhere with a completely different climate. If you get married in December and then head to the Caribbean, you can obviously get most of your packing done in October or November. Regardless of your destination, here’s a handy checklist for your honeymoon must-haves: • Plane tickets in your maiden name – don’t make this mistake!

You will not be able to get your name changed until you have your marriage license…so make sure your ID will match your airline ticket.

• A valid passport if you are traveling outside of the United States, visas if necessary and your driver’s license.

• Traveler’s checks, credit cards and cash. Take whatever you are comfortable with, and make sure you have a contingency plan in case something goes wrong.

• Your phone. If you are traveling internationally, check with your carrier to see if you will be able to use your phone abroad. Otherwise, find out what kind of Internet capability you will have in case your family demands to know you arrived safely!

• Confirmations of every reservation you have made. This includes airline tickets, honeymoon insurance if you have it, hotel, rental car and restaurant reservations, as well as any specialty activity you may have booked, like private tours or scuba excursions.

• Copies of all paperwork and identification information. Leave a copy with your family, leave a copy in your hotel room and always have copies with you.

• Remember the restrictions in place for carry-on luggage, so you don’t pack a full bottle of sunscreen in your purse. They will throw it away, sealed shut with plastic or not, I promise.

If traveling abroad, take note of the policies in the countries in which you will be traveling.

• Enough clothes to last several days past the end of your trip in case your trip is unexpectedly extended. Make sure to create your own checklist of the clothes you want to have… and don’t forget underwear, socks, shoes, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, contact lens supplies, medicine, etc.), beach cover-ups and bathing suits if necessary, as well as clothing for all types of occasions.

• A camera with extra film if you want to pretend you are honeymooning in the 1990s…otherwise, just your phone or your digital camera to capture all the beautiful scenery on your trip.

• Enjoy the trip! Knowing you have everything you’ll need will allow you to kick back and relax after the big day!

nce you’ve chosen the date, the following serves as a general guideline for all the to-do’s as you count down to your wedding day!

10 – 12 months from the date • Announce your engagement to your parents, family, and friends.

Update your Facebook status to “Engaged.”

• Think about your overall theme – are you dreaming of a rustic, country-style wedding or a posh, sophisticated event? Do you dream of a traditional ceremony or are you looking for outsidethe-box wedding ideas?

• Start working on your guest list.

• Pick the time of day / night for the wedding.

• Secure a church and / or reception venue.

• Choose your bridal party.

• Determine your wedding budget.

• Hire a wedding planner.

• Make a list of vendors (florists, caterers, musicians, etc.) and begin scheduling appointments.

8 – 10 months from the date • Begin shopping for a wedding dress (be sure to budget for alterations and undergarments).

• Shop and select bridesmaid dresses.

• Sign contracts and make initial deposits to reserve vendors for the big day.

• Start thinking about a honeymoon destination and work on travel plans.

• Have engagement pictures taken.

4 – 7 months from the date • Send ‘save the date’ notices to let guests know the date, time, and location of the wedding.

• Begin planning the rehearsal dinner.

• Apply for marriage license up to 60 days prior to the wedding date.

1 month from the date • Schedule a final gown fitting.

• Confirm that your bridesmaids and groomsmen have everything they need and are aware of the schedule of events.

• Confirm arrival and delivery times from all of your vendors.

• Have your wedding program printed.

• Create welcome bags for your out-of-town guests and have them delivered to the hotel.

• Write thank you notes as you receive gifts.

• Confirm attendance of guests who have not RSVP’d.

• Provide caterer with the final head count.
