Acouple of months ago, I started going for a walk every single (weekday) morning. I wake up, enjoy my cup of coffee and head out to take my two dogs on an hour long walk. The best part? My mom does it with me! She doesn’t live nearby, so we aren’t able to physically walk together, but I have my airpods in and we chat on the phone while we’re both walking. We call it our “morning meeting.” I’ve found this time to be so valuable for brainstorming ideas and making a game plan for having a productive, successful day. We’ve been working together for over 10 years now and I wish we’d started this morning meeting routine LONG ago!

While a lot of our conversations are work focused, a lot of them are not. It’s a time for us to catch up and talk about whatever we want—you wouldn’t believe how fast an hour goes by! The research is plentiful: going on daily walks does amazing things for you both physically and mentally. From reducing stress to increasing energy levels and improving sleep, walking is truly a game changer for your health. I also must admit part of the reason I love it so much is because of my dogs. It’s truly their favorite part of the day and it makes my heart happy to see how excited they get when they see me pull out their leashes.

Keeping It Real TRANSITIONING

WELL

I am writing this article while the summer heat is still in full swing, but when you read it, we will have stepped into fall. (Yes! Sweater weather, y’all! Who’s with me?)

We hear all the time about this season, “Autumn has such a wonderful way of showing us how beautiful it is to let things go.” And it is beautiful, but that doesn’t mean it ain’t hard. Transitioning from one season to the next is not an easy thing. The place in life where you have been…so full and vibrant… was perfect for that season. But when the seasons suddenly change, it requires a transition to the next, and there’s a mourning. That doesn’t dismiss or diminish the joy or even excitement for the next season, but you have a right to stop, even just for a few moments, and mourn the leaving of a season, and honor how wonderful it was.

My husband (boyfriend at the time) moved to Winston-Salem in September 2022. When we got married in January, I moved into his condo. It’s been our home for nearly 9 months—our first together as a married couple. Now we’re moving to a marvelous new home. We’re so grateful for God’s blessing! But suddenly leaving the place where we were dating, were engaged, and began our marriage…so many ‘firsts’…that’s no simple thing.

Let me give some context. My husband and I have vastly different life experiences. He’s moved nearly 13 times in his life. I moved once as a child. I went back-and-forth to college and lived abroad for a semester in Israel, but those were not permanent moves. Where I live, I put down roots that don’t come up easily. But this move did just that—it pulled up freshlyestablished roots, and I felt it.

We went back to the condo the night after we moved just to clear out a few more things. Already, the hollowness and even the echo of our first home shook me. It felt cold, lacking the warmth it held for those precious months. For a minute I literally laid on the bare floor in our empty old living room. Oh, if those walls could talk! They would tell of the endless nights where we fell asleep on the couch. They would tell of our excitement when we called people on the night we got engaged. They would tell of a crazy Christmas Eve when I came over for breakfast and water pipes started bursting in some of the other homes around us…the fire department did not love our development that day…SORRY! The walls would recall hours of laughter and conversation as we have learned how to be married.

Thankfully, my husband knows I am a feeler and gave me the moments he recognized I needed. He laid on the floor with me simply staring at the ceiling…remembering. Then, he slowly got us up and we danced through each room while recalling

the Goodness of God. Finally, we put everything in the car and drove all the way back to our beautiful, warm new home.

Transition is a beautiful thing AND it’s a hard thing. But if we stay in the old place… we can never get to the new place. It’s necessary. We are called to grow and expand.

So, I don’t know where you are in life or what season you’re in right now, but savor it. Maybe let go of the previous season. Maybe dream about your next season. But know that it’s all necessary. Take a few moments to recognize the Goodness of God all around you…in all of it. It’s like the verse says… “I will see the Lord in the land of the living.” Look around, and you will!

The Comfort of Solitude

How to Appreciate Your Own Company

As many of us already know, spending time alone doesn’t equate to being lonely. Alone time can be a gift…an opportunity to get to know ourselves better, a chance to improve our mental health, and engage in the things we enjoy without worrying about anyone else. Whether you’re wishing for more time alone or less these days, solitude is something you can learn to appreciate. Here are some ways to reap the benefits of having time on your own.

LEARN HOW TO APPRECIATE SILENCE.

It can be as simple as turning off the electronics to start with. Find a comfortable spot, grab your favorite beverage, and get comfortable in an environment without ringtones and buzzing just for a while. While social media may seem like a chance to connect with others, it has been shown to cause stronger feelings of loneliness.

START A JOURNAL TO GET YOUR THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS OUT.

A daily journal can help you interpret what you’re thinking and how you’re feeling. Through this you can work to identify and manage any stress you may be feeling. Just a few sentences each day about what you’re doing or how you’re feeling can help you stay on track.

DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOURSELF.

Alone time gives you the chance to nurture a relationship with yourself. This may not be easy at first...especially if you are someone who loves being with other people. Being alone may cause feelings to come up that were easy to push aside when you were distracted by other people. But this can be the beginning of a breakthrough and a time to really find out the specialness of YOU. What are your likes and dislikes? What do you value in life? What makes you happy and what makes you sad?

LEARN SOMETHING NEW.

Take this time to absorb and learn new information or practice a skill while you’re alone. Listen to a podcast you’ve been curious about. Start learning another language. Read a book about a topic that has always interested you or take a class. Come up with something that can expand your knowledge while you have the time to devote your full attention to it.

SPEND TIME IN NATURE.

Go on a long walk, read in a park, or just sit outside. A 2019 study found people who spent at least two hours in nature over a week’s time were much more likely to report greater well-being and good health than those who spent no time outside.

MEDITATE.

While the idea of meditating may sound daunting, the actual practice is open to anyone. You can try meditating solo or with the help of meditation apps or YouTube videos. You will need to sit in a relaxed and comfortable position, focus on taking deep, slow breaths, and stay conscious of each breath you take to quiet your mind. Meditating can help you find balance in your mind and body so that you might be able to accomplish things you need to do more efficiently.

When we think about solitude, it’s important to see being alone as a choice, not a punishment. Recent research shows that we benefit more from alone time as we age and have more control over our time. Spending time alone doesn’t have to be a lonely experience. Instead, it can be a time of happiness and of improved understanding of who we are. Additionally, solitude can be quite beneficial for your mental health, creativity, and productivity.

North Carolina’s Best Places for a Fall Getaway

As the days become shorter and the weather becomes cooler, summer turns into fall. This season change is a welcome relief for those seeking refuge from the hot Carolina sun. There is something magical about this time of year. From the colors of the leaves painting the sky around us different shades of red, gold and orange, to the delicious fall crops that provide us with autumn flavor, this season is certainly a favorite of many. Rather than embrace this change at home, many think fall is a perfect time to plan a getaway with family, friends, or oneself.

Being a Carolinian means you don’t have to plan a trip far away to enjoy some of the most beautiful sights and sounds this season can provide. One of the many reasons our state is so beloved is the fact that we have all four seasons, as well as easy access to some of the most exquisite mountains and beaches one can see. North Carolina’s coastal areas can experience 70-80-degree weather in the middle of fall, which is appealing to many who want one last trip to the beach. However, one doesn’t have to only be ready for a trip to the beach. North Carolina also has picture-perfect mountains that offer a variety of fall activities one can enjoy. With all this said, it’s no surprise that North Carolina is becoming one of the most popular places to live and relocate to.

Ready to kick off the fall season with a trip to one of North Carolina’s many picturesque spots? Don’t worry about a long car trip. Many of these locations are a few hours away and can easily be done for a lovely weekend getaway. Read on for North Carolina’s top five locations to plan a perfect fall excursion.

ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

Yes, this destination seems like a no brainer. Asheville easily tops the list of a perfect spot to visit during the fall season. Best known for being a city for the hippies-at-heart, this lovely city is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Providing a perfect backdrop for a fall getaway, Asheville is also an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking, to tubing, to fly fishing, Asheville is filled with exciting outdoor activities to enjoy. This mountain city is also a great spot to view local art and enjoy music. It seems like around every corner, there is a spot to embrace the art scene.

WILMINGTON, NC

This coastal city is home to beautiful beaches and a vibrant historic downtown. Not only does this seafaring city boast live music, breweries, and art museums, Wilmington also has an exciting history involving pirates and historical battles. Why visit Wilmington in the fall? Not only are the temperatures still warm enough to sneak a trip or two to the beach, but the city can offer Halloween enthusiasts a chance to learn more about the darker side of history, with local ghost & pub tours.

DAVIDSON, NC

This lakeside town, is another excellent location to visit for a fall getaway. The Davidson/Cornelius area offers many sports for the water enthusiasts wanting to enjoy a few last weeks of fun in the sun. Cornelius offers numerous marinas to make renting boats, jet skis, or paddleboards a breeze. Foodies will delight at the sight of Hello, Sailor, a waterfront restaurant and bar known for its hushpuppies, cocktails, and of course, Carolina shrimp Calabash plate.

BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC

Craving another mountain vacation this fall? Look no further than Black Mountain. Voted “America’s Prettiest Small Town” in 2017 by TripAdvisor, this city nestled 20 minutes outside of Asheville, is another excellent base to explore western North Carolina. Wanting to experience more time on the water this fall? Try renting a cabin on Lake Eden, where you can choose from treehouse-style cabins, rustic cabins, luxury cottages, or nostalgic campers. Lake Eden also hosts the adored LEAF festival every October. This colorful event is focused on music, culture, and art. Local craft breweries are also there for the brew loving travelers, including Lookout Brewing, Pisgah Brewing, and Black Mountain Brewing.

MT. AIRY, NC

For those wanting to get away from bustling city life, Mt. Airy may be the perfect fall spot to enjoy a trip away. It provides the small-town feel that many will enjoy. Not only is this city beautiful to view fall foliage, it also boasts a popular fall festival known as the “Mayberry Days.” If you’re a fan of the classic Andy Griffith Show, then this is the festival for you. Over a week, guests can see characters from the show and enjoy fall activities that are sure to take one and all back to a simpler time of life.

The Cricket’s Nest Craft Shop

This month we’re interviewing three artists from The Cricket’s Nest Craft Shop, a local non-profit outreach giving the senior community of Forsyth County a place to display and sell their crafts. These women share a passion for repurposed work and proudly share the mindset that simply being creative is a form of art.

JoAnnah Michael | Steel Art

steelartrepurposed.com

How would you describe your work?

My art is meant to inspire others as it inspires me, by repurposing steel into artistic sculptures by cutting it and welding it by hand.

What influences your art?

When I first started to weld, my mum (now 94) would encourage my work by asking for sculptures for her garden. Her requests for specific designs like butterflies, flowers, birds, etc., broadened my own sculpture designs and skills. My dream of taking my craft further became a reality when I learned to weld at an “Intro Welding Class”at MIXXER Community Makerspace in WinstonSalem. My work is influenced by the repurposed materials as well as my clients introducing new concepts and requests.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I’ve recently begun working on a commission to create a large (8’x6’) kinetic wind “Blue Heron” steel repurposed sculpture to be set in 3’ shallow water for a private estate in Lake Norman. It definitely pushes those size and weight limits! Thankfully, my partner, Les (my muscle man), helps me lift and place my larger work on site!

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

My dream of welding began when I watched “Flashdance” in 1983, where Jennifer Beal was a steel welder. My advice to women interested in welding is not to wait “36 years” to follow their dream like I did! Do it now!

Dorothy Sweet | Functional Art

Dory-Sweet-Art.square.site

How would you describe your work?

I repurpose old records and CDs headed to the landfill into clocks and wall art. I primarily work with fluid, abstract art that forces me to let go of control. Instead of waste, the paint that drips from the art is captured to create jewelry. I also brush paint and dabble in collage. I originally started painting as a way to escape side effects from cancer treatments and it continues to be my therapy.

During craft events, my art becomes a ministry that allows me to talk about Cancer Services with people that God brings across my path. I always share that I donate 10% to Cancer Services which opens the door for conversation where I can provide help if a need exists.

What influences your art?

Painting has opened my eyes to a new way of seeing. Anything that catches my attention and makes me smile becomes an influence, including nature, color combinations in clothing, found objects, and new tools. Brainstorming with customers for commissioned pieces has opened up so many new ideas!

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I’ve been experimenting with safe ways to cut vinyl record albums so I can create shaped clocks, ornaments, and earrings. Also, the bark from my tree that was struck by lightning has been curing in my garage and is ready to be the “canvas” for painting angels!

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

Do what you can, when you can - listen to your body and prioritize creative time. Experiment to find “the thing” that makes your heart sing and embrace it. Don’t worry about finding “your style” or following a current fad. The end result is not as important as enjoying the process!

To learn more about these artists and support repurposed local art you can visit the

How would you describe your work?

I create unique pieces made from repurposed materials of all kinds.

What influences your art?

Sometimes it’s as simple as asking, “Hey, what can I make out of that?” I’m often inspired by the generous donations of discarded items from my family and friends. After taking apart a backyard playhouse recently my son asked,”Mother, I guess that you are going to want this wood?” The look on someone’s face when they see just the right piece that has been created from scraps is the ultimate reward in my work.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

Hands down, it would be finishing a quilt that my mother started when I was 17. She was an expert seamstress but this was not her thing, although her stitches were amazing. She encouraged me to take a quilting class and I have never stopped making, selling or gifting quilts but this one is a treasure.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

Remember that not everyone likes everything and that’s how it’s supposed to be. An artist should always make their own artform from vision and love doing it.

Purpose Push:

Intention Isn’t Enough

In June, I wrote about us as boss women being intentioned for greatness. That is true because God is within us and He has a carefully crafted plan for our lives if we would just lean into who we were born to be.

This month, I want to talk about our intentions. We can all think of times we intended to do something that didn’t happen. Personally, exercising has always been a battle and I cannot count the number of times I chose to stay on the couch instead. But who’s better: The person who intended to go to the gym and didn’t or the person who never thought about the gym at all? Both get the same result of no growth. I don’t want that to be the case in our lives and business and the enemy is hard at work trying to trick us. Our fleshly intentions aren’t enough! If you have any goals you want to accomplish before the end of the year, we need God and perseverance to make sure our intentions manifest into action and accomplishments. Let’s discuss how we can move the needle effectively:

SET - AND DON’T FORGET - YOUR GOALS

If you make a habit of writing down your goals it can be the bridge that connects your intentions to actions. Be strategic when writing your goals by breaking them down into smaller specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timebound goals, also known as S.M.A.R.T. goals. You can find cute templates of this method anywhere on the internet. Once you’ve filled it out, put your goals somewhere in your environment that allows you to look at them often. This is a mindset hack that stays in your conscious and subconscious thoughts and will help you structure your tasks to accomplish your goal, sometimes sooner than you think.

Sheridan C. Watkins is a journalist and the owner of Perennial Peaces, a jewelry and gifts brand focused on transcending self-worth to all women. Her true work began after climbing out of a dark place with the help of God and therapy and her life mission is to provide tangible peace through her Divine gifts to help women heal and transform their life. Follow the mission on Instagram and Facebook: @perennialpeaces

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR FRUIT

A quick indicator of your effectiveness in achieving your goals is to pay attention to your “fruit” or the end results of what’s happening in your life. The fruit you bear is a direct correlation to your intentions. For example, if you value healthy relationships but are always in the middle of drama, it may be time to dissect the role you’re playing in the outcome you wish to change. Are you embodying the character traits of someone who chooses peace over chaos? This realization may cause you to be vocal with others in your life that incite a side of you that you no longer want to associate with. That’s OK. The clearer you are about your boundaries, the easier people will fall in alignment to stay in your life or dismiss themselves because they can’t accept the changes. Either scenario will be beneficial for your goals in the end.

STUDY BIBLE CHARACTERS

If you’re like me and appreciate stories with parallels of how people handled their intentions, take time to study your Bible. There are

numerous stories of characters with intentions that were fulfilled and neglected. Study Judas, whose intention was to be a great disciple but in the end chose 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 14-25, 47-50). Study Cain, whose intention was to make great sacrifices to the Lord but was overcome with jealousy instead of improving his heart posture (Genesis 4:1-16). Then study Esther, whose intention was to save the Jewish people from perishing and was successful with careful planning and timing (Esther 8). The Bible has addressed all situations that we will face in life so don’t forget to turn to it for guidance because when you don’t take action on your intentions, it leaves room for the enemy to play with your mind and push you into discouragement or idleness.

However, Jesus overcame this world and He is in us so that means we can, too! As long as we are creating action steps for our intentions and staying sensitive to the Word of God, we will reach our milestones and harness the power that will change our lives. So let’s get to work. I have faith in you.

WHAT is the ENNEAGRAM and WHY SHOULD I CARE?

Have you heard of the Enneagram? In the past several years, the Enneagram has become a popular tool for categorizing and understanding personality. It seems to be popping up all over the place through coaches, in various organizations, on social media, and through memes.

What exactly is it? The Enneagram is a study of the nine basic types of people. It explains why we behave the way we do and points to specific directions for individual growth. It’s an important tool for self-awareness and aids in understanding and improving relationships with others in your life.

It teaches that early in life we learned to feel safe and cope with our circumstances by developing a strategy based on our natural talents and abilities. Ennea is Greek for the number 9 and gram means “a drawing.” The Enneagram means a drawing with nine points. It is a typology system for understanding and organizing personality traits.

I am a bit of a personality assessment nerd and see value in the nuances of various tools. I think the Enneagram is one of my favorites. I like it so much that I got my certification as a Facilitator and Coach using the tool.

Let’s explore the classifications in a little more detail. Although classifications may vary a bit depending on the source, the most commonly utilized typology is as follows:

TYPE ONE – THE REFORMER (The Rational, Idealistic Type)

Ones are responsible, thorough, and hard-working with high standards for themselves and others. They want to improve themselves and the world around them.

TYPE TWO – THE HELPER (The Caring, Interpersonal Type)

Twos are empathetic, warm, caring, and generous. They are motivated by the need to be loved and valued – and to express positive feelings toward others.

TYPE THREE – THE ACHIEVER

(The Success-Oriented, Pragmatic Type)

Threes are self-assured, action-oriented, charming, ambitious, competent, and energetic. They want to be productive, achieve success, and avoid failure.

TYPE FOUR – THE INDIVIDUALIST

(The Sensitive, Withdrawn Type)

Fours are creative, authentic, and intuitive. They are motivated by the need to experience their feelings, to be understood, and to be unique.

TYPE FIVE – THE INVESTIGATOR

(The Intense, Cerebral Type)

Fives are excellent thinkers and strategists. They want to know and understand everything, to be self-sufficient, and to avoid looking foolish.

TYPE SIX – THE LOYALIST

(The Committed, Security-Oriented Type)

Sixes are reliable, hard-working, loyal, and trustworthy. They want security so they focus on creating safety and structure.

TYPE SEVEN – THE ENTHUSIAST

(The Busy, Fun-Loving Type)

Sevens are extroverted, optimistic, versatile, and spontaneous – the life of the party. They want to be happy and plan enjoyable activities and avoid suffering and pain.

TYPE EIGHT – THE CHALLENGER

(The Powerful, Dominating Type)

Eights are self-confident, strong, and assertive. They desire to be selfreliant and strong and to avoid feeling weak or dependent.

TYPE NINE – THE PEACEMAKER

(The Easygoing, Self-Effacing Type)

Nines are creative, optimistic, supportive, and go with the flow. They want to keep the peace, merge with the agendas of others, and avoid conflict.

Each type also has a primary wing which has a lot of influence over their personality. The wings are the types on either side of your type. So, for example, I am a Two and my primary wing is a Three. This means that my relationship-oriented tendencies are heavily influenced by the achieving, action-oriented tendencies of Type Three.

THE ENNEAGRAM

So, at first glance, what type do you think you are? I look forward to sharing more about this exciting tool over the coming months.

Top Beauty Picks for Fall

Fall is here and according to Dr. Andy Schneider, one of the board-certified plastic surgeons at Forsyth Plastic Surgery, “it’s a great time to start paying attention to your skin again.”

Dr. Schneider says, “We tend not to do all the skincare we’re supposed to when we’re on vacation or having fun during the summer. So this is really the perfect time to come in for a treatment like a DiamondGlow to clean and rejuvenate the skin.”

Dr. Leslie Branch, another board-certified plastic surgeon at the practice, says, “As the beach season and summer ends, a lot of our patients are ready to move to stronger skincare including adding Retinol creams, peels and laser treatments. We have two wonderful aestheticians on staff who can advise on skincare product choices and perform treatments.” Dr. Branch adds, “We also see a lot of patients coming in during early fall to get their Botox and filler done. That way it will be most effective for your Christmas and holiday parties.“

Plastic surgeon Dr. Gil Kingman agrees that fall is the perfect time to reboot your skincare. He notes, “One of the new treatments we have at Forsyth Plastic Surgery is Potenza, which is a radio frequency microneedling treatment. It’s terrific because it improves the texture and quality of the skin -- and it tightens it.”

Dr. George Lawson III, a plastic surgeon at the practice, encourages patients to think ahead. “The holidays are a great time to book a cosmetic surgery. You’ll be able to relax and give yourself time to recuperate after surgery. And then you can enjoy the results!”

The Plastic Surgeons at Forsyth Plastic Surgery pick their Faves for Fall

OBAGI NU-CIL FOR LASHES AND BROWS

Dr. Andy Schneider: “Obagi’s Nu-Cil products are terrific for making lashes and brows fuller, denser and darker. We’re seeing amazing results with our patients in just a month or two.”

MIRADRY FOR SWEAT

Dr. Gil Kingman: “miraDry can markedly reduce underarm sweat and it has been very popular. Fall is a great time to do it as it’s still pretty warm here in North Carolina.”

POTENZA FOR BOOSTING COLLAGEN

Dr. George Lawson III: “This is a new treatment that we see great results with when patients have a series of 3 treatments. It tightens the skin and promotes collagen and elastin renewal.”

BOTOX AND FILLER FOR ANTI-AGING

Dr. Leslie Branch: “I recommend my patients book their Botox and filler treatments several weeks before the holidays. That way you’ll get the best results.”

I’m Not in the Mood:

How to Tackle the Most Boring Tasks

I don’t just dislike dusting; I loathe it. I will wipe down the kitchen until it sparkles, vacuum the rugs with lawn mower precision, mop the floors until they shine and even scrub the bathrooms to Martha Stewart perfection before getting down to the business of tackling the dust. Until recently, I honestly didn’t understand what was wrong with me. I mean, dusting is so easy! Which, it turns out, is at the root of the problem: simple boredom is to blame. After numerous studies, researchers have identified two ways that boredom interferes with getting things done:

When the task doesn’t require much of our attention

When the outcome has little value or meaning to us.

In my case, I love a clean and tidy house, so dusting has value in supporting that goal. Ah, but the mere thought of dusting leaves me catatonic. Given that it takes so little attention, I become bored and succeed in demotivating myself. I wonder if that’s what happens to those listless, robotic cashiers I sometimes encounter as I am scurrying about getting other chores completed? If so, at least now I get it. It’s little wonder that we often turn to stimulating distractions such as scrolling, gaming, and puzzles: we’re not lazy, we’re just plain bored!

Case in point: my walking friend/neighbor, a super-energetic person. She maintains a massive garden, leads volunteer efforts, walks daily, goes to the gym three times a week, and consumes books voraciously. The other day, she was dragging her feet as she faced a light day aheadone filled with low-attention, boredom-inducing tasks. Can you relate? What chores or tasks make you drag your feet?

While most of us will never have the luxury of eliminating all yawn-inducing activities from our day-to-day, we can tap into one or more strategies that can help us get the job done. Here’s how:

MATCH THE TASK WITH YOUR ENERGY LEVEL

Tackle those dreaded tasks when your energy is lower and your stimulation-seeking brain is in a lower

gear. Is that morning, afternoon, or evening for you? I go into a mid-afternoon slump which makes it the best time to tackle my aversion to dusting.

CHUNK IT OUT AND TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

I know, so much of what we’ve been told is about powering through things, getting things done. But when we’re faced with a sizeable boring project, we may procrastinate endlessly. Better to break it up into smaller pieces and feel good about the progress you’ve made. Decluttering? Dive into a drawer, a closet, or a room at a time. Preparing your tax information? Same approach – one part at a time.

OCCUPY YOUR BRAIN WITH A DISTRACTION

You may have already adopted this strategy. In fact, it is exactly how I make my way through the dreaded dusting. I crank up the music from my favorite eras or performers and entertain myself with every swipe of the mitt. You might also listen to podcasts or audiobooks which will have the same effect.

PLAY “RACE THE CLOCK”

If you are the high energy type, try setting the timer on your phone for 15 or 20 minutes. Then jump into the task at hand and stop when time is up. It is amazing how much you can get done by setting up a simple challenge. Then, take a break, do something more interesting, and set that timer again.

FOCUS ON THE END GOAL

This strategy taps into the power of visualization to help us get on with the task at hand. Working on that terminal degree? Keep that sheepskin in the forefront of your mind as you hit the books or polish off that thesis. Love a clean house? Keep dusting, Jean Marie!

REWARD YOURSELF

This time-tested strategy hits the sweet spot every time. Identify how you will reward yourself before diving in and think about how much you will enjoy that warm bath, those three bon-bons, or that Happy Hour with your friend. Boring task? Conquered!

Women in the Workplace Series: Part III

This three part series will provide an in-depth look at the results of the 2023 “Women in the Workplace Community Survey” provided by REACH Women’s Network, exploring the importance of its findings and recognizing the opportunities and change women hope to see in our local workforce. REACH is an acronym for Recognize, Encourage, Advance, Connect Her. The nonprofit’s mission is to close the gender gap by raising the collective voice and influence of women in the workplace.

This past April, REACH conducted its first comprehensive study of its kind conducted in Forsyth County, with its survey designed to measure how working women in the community feel about issues such as workplace flexibility and benefits, company culture, job satisfaction, career advancement, work/life integration, and more. With 687 working women in Forsyth County participating, the results provided an up close understanding of what women in our community experience as well as have their eyes on when it comes to the future of their careers. In this third part of the series, we’re exploring what a positive workplace culture means to our local women and what they want and need to see more of to create a positive environment to thrive.

Looking at the survey results it is evident that workplace culture is top of mind for women, as it should be. There have been intentional improvements over the last decade prioritizing employee physical and mental health, increasing benefits, adding amenities, career advancement opportunities and practicing intentional and equitable practices. Approximately 95% of REACH participants identified themselves as professional women, and believe our community deserves to work in careers where they feel supported by the culture in their company.

Survey Results: A Look at Workplace Culture for Forsyth Women

• 50% said that they were satisfied with their current wage/salary, while 35% were dissatisfied

• More than half were satisfied with their employers’ commitment to gender equity, racial equity, and age/generational inclusion (dissatisfaction rated 12-16%)

• 39% said they were satisfied with their employers’ “handling of workplace complaints (discrimination, harassment)”, while 21% were dissatisfied

• 82% said they felt their opinion was sought out by work colleagues, with 71% saying they felt it was sought by their supervisor

• When asked to rate the importance of various factors that would influence them to leave their jobs, “workplace culture” was rated as highly as “higher salary/pay” (90% and 89%, respectively).

Opportunities for Employer Support & Change

When surveyed, most women identified as satisfied and had positive things to say about their employers’ flexible options for work hours and time, as well as location options and their roles and positions within their given organization. Given the demand on the modern family with the majority of households having two working parents, as well as the national mental health crisis, companies are making incredible strides offering new levels of flexibility. Employers can improve overall messaging and culture throughout different industries to help women feel confident that taking advantage of flexible work opportunities will not negatively impact their careers. This is especially true in more male dominated companies and departments.

Another area of workplace culture that can continue to be intentionally improved is removing the stigma of reporting or complaining about something uncomfortable at work. Female employees are often hesitant to address issues, worrying about trust in handling complaints. Women may fear retaliation, lack of confidentiality, or unfair reactions when reporting problems.

We continue the work for what’s right.

This study generated a robust amount of data that will continue to be used to help share Forsyth County women’s stories, needs and desires in the workplace, thereby supporting the changes that desperately need to be made. Carol Reeve of REACH and president of Girl on the Roof, shared “We will continue to explore some of the most prominent themes by disaggregating factors including age, income level, race and ethnicity, and size of employer. Our plan is to give employers actionable strategies for supporting women in the workplace. If funding is available, we would like to repeat this survey every two to three years so we can measure our progress and position Winston-Salem as a place where working women thrive.”

If you are interested in learning more about the 2023 survey or receiving additional information, you can sign up for updates through the REACH website, reachwomensnetwork.org/survey.

Supporting the 3P Auction Fundraiser: Empowering Women through Mammograms

October isn’t just about falling leaves and pumpkin spice lattes; it’s also a time to think pink. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated globally, focuses on spreading awareness about a disease that affects millions of women worldwide. In the United States alone, one in eight women faces the risk of breast cancer every year. As October approaches, we are reminded of the significance of early detection and the critical role it plays in saving lives.

The iconic pink ribbon symbolizes unity in the fight against breast cancer, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month is synonymous with various campaigns and programs conducted by a multitude of organizations, ranging from breast cancer advocacy groups to local community organizations and major retailers. It’s a time when we come together to emphasize the importance of breast cancer screening and prevention.

Mark your calendars for October 17th, as Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging, in collaboration with Forsyth Woman, Style Encore and Medaloni Cellars, presents Rosé @ Medaloni Cellars 3P Auction Fundraiser. This is not just any event; it’s an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of women in our community. The evening promises a lot of fun, with wine, a silent auction, fashion show, door prizes, along with food trucks and a live band, ensuring an unforgettable experience while contributing to a noble cause. A $10 admission includes a souvenir glass and first drink!

The proceeds from this fundraiser supports the 3P Fund (Positive Pink Power Fund), a vital initiative started by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging seven years ago. The primary goal of the 3P Fund is to provide mammograms to women who, due to financial constraints, cannot afford this crucial screening. While health insurance typically covers preventive screenings, many women in our local community remain uninsured, causing them to delay these essential check-ups.

The challenges of access to healthcare have been further exacerbated by the unsettling statistics showing that an estimated 41% of adults in the US have avoided medical care during the pandemic. Since early 2020, breast cancer screenings have seen a staggering 89% reduction. This underscores the urgent need for initiatives like 3P in our community.

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging prides itself on being patient-centric, and their commitment to accessibility is unwavering. With two conveniently located facilities in WinstonSalem and Kernersville and flexible hours to accommodate busy schedules, they make it easy for individuals to schedule their annual screening mammograms. To make your own screening appointment, simply call the clinic directly at 336-765-5722, or visit their website at wakehealth.edu/mammogram.

The highlight of this awareness month is the 3P Auction Fundraiser, scheduled for Tuesday, October 17th, starting at 5 p.m. The venue, Medaloni Cellars at 9125 Shallowford Rd. Lewisville, NC, 27023, is set to come alive with the spirit of giving and unity as we gather to support a cause that touches the lives of countless women in our community. If you cannot make the event in person you can go online at any time through October 17th and make a donation at event.gives/mammograms.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of early detection and the impact it can have on individuals and families. By participating in events like Rosé @ Medaloni Cellars 3P Auction Fundraiser and supporting the 3P Fund, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of women who need it the most. Together, we can empower women with the gift of early detection, bringing hope and brighter tomorrows to our community.

Confidence is

a Skill (Not Just a State of Mind)

When it comes to making a lasting impression, nothing is more powerful than showing up confidently. Whether you’re stepping into a job interview, attending a social gathering, or taking the stage to deliver a presentation, projecting self-assurance can make all the difference. Confidence is not just a state of mind; it’s an art form that can be mastered with practice. So, if you’re ready to unlock your inner radiance and leave a lasting mark wherever you go, learn the art of showing up confidently. Confidence is a skill that can be learned, it takes practice and patience to master but it is well worth the commitment and time investment. Your most successful and fulfilling life awaits when you step into the confident person you were always meant to be.

When women show up confidently, they command respect, assert their worth, and make their voices heard. It opens doors to new opportunities, whether it is in the professional realm, personal relationships, or leadership roles. Confidence enables women to navigate challenges with resilience, take calculated risks, and push beyond their comfort zones. It fosters self-belief and inspires others, becoming a catalyst for positive change and breaking glass ceilings. By showing up confidently, women can shatter stereotypes, challenge gender biases, and create a more inclusive and equal world. Ultimately, it empowers women to embrace their full potential, achieve their goals, and lead lives that are more powerful and purposeful.

When learning how to show up confidently, pay attention to your body language. Stand tall with good posture, keeping your shoulders back and head held high. Make eye contact with others, showing engagement and interest. Use open gestures, avoiding crossing your arms, to project openness and approachability. Walk with purpose, taking confident strides. Remember, your body language is a powerful tool to communicate confidence, so be mindful of your posture and nonverbal cues. One of the best ways to build confidence is with continual practice and rehearsal, just like a sport. It is important to practice confidence within your mind as well as with your body. Visualize yourself as confident, and poised, commanding of attention.

Visualizing helps to create a positive mindset and belief in your own abilities. By envisioning yourself as a confident leader, you tap into your subconscious mind and begin to align your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with that image. This can have a profound impact on your self-perception and increase your overall confidence. Visualization allows you to mentally rehearse and prepare for leadership situations. By vividly imagining yourself confidently handling challenges, making decisions, and effectively communicating, you build a mental blueprint for success. This mental rehearsal enhances your competence and reduces anxiety or self-doubt when facing real-life leadership scenarios. When you radiate confidence, it draws people towards you, increases trust, and inspires them to follow your lead. As a leader, projecting confidence fosters a positive and empowering work environment, as others feel assured and motivated by your example.

A confident woman takes credit for her accomplishments and contributions. She acknowledges her value and does not downplay her achievements or attribute them solely to external factors. She embraces self-promotion when appropriate, highlighting her skills and successes. Rather than shying away from challenges or waiting for instructions, a confident woman takes initiative and approaches problems with a proactive mindset. She seeks solutions, offers suggestions, and takes responsibility for finding ways to overcome obstacles. A confident woman knows when and how to advocate for herself and her ideas, while also recognizing the importance of collaboration and teamwork. She strikes a balance between assertiveness and cooperation, valuing the input of others while maintaining her own confidence in her abilities. Take steps to be the confident woman you envision and with enough practice, patience, and time you will become her. When you develop confidence, it can reveal your greatest potential and success beyond anything you ever thought possible.

Tara LaFon Gooch is the author of, “How To GRASP Confidence & Own Your Power,” her story of overcoming adversity to become her most confident self with a foundation of gratitude. The PERFECT

Autumn, and Why It Matters

I am thinking about literature as I often do on a Sunday afternoon and specifically about Oscar Wilde’s quote “And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” It seems to me that fall suddenly made its presence known with a strong and imperious will, showering us with vivid colors and gorgeous views – full of detail, at the same time minute, graphic and accurate in its seasonal portents. I was born in the autumn season on September 17th, the same day that the U.S. Constitution was signed and on the date of the Battle of Antietam, the nation’s bloodiest single day, my Civil War historian son remarks wryly. I attribute my fondness for autumn perhaps because I was fortuitously born then. A quote from someone named Lauren Destefano who I do not know exactly captures my same sentiments: “Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.” I also think of a phrase from the movie “All That Jazz” when its principal dancer yells “Showtime!” and that, too, is how I feel about this season. All you have to do is look at the spectacle of fall and it will move your emotional compass into high appreciative gear and most likely make you reach for your phone to memorialize a few choice photos of the vibrant landscapes everywhere.

A glance at my dictionary tells me that the word autumn is from the French “automne” and didn’t enjoy common usage until the 18th century. It occurs between the end of September and into December in the Northern Hemisphere and is characterized by the shedding of leaves from deciduous trees who, like plants, are winding down their cycle of growth. The air is filled with transformation – shorter days, cooler temperatures, changing color of those leaves. One might say that this is Nature’s last hoorah before retiring into winter’s severe and quiescent mood. Symbolically though there is another story here: autumn is a time of gathering, storing and preparing for the cold and isolation that the next season will usher in.

While I’m in Trader Joe’s scooping up all the seasonal fall products and pumpkin-things galore, I consider that fall is a good time for rest, reflection, awareness, mindfulness. Our family prepares carefully for

the longer and colder nights but still relishes the crisp autumn air, the wearing of my mom’s hand-knit bulky scarves, jackets so big you can get lost in them, and boots that we bought for a pittance at Tractor Trailer in Turlock, California, humongous black rubbery things meant for mucking out animal stalls. I love Emily Bronte’s quote that, “Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree,” because I feel precisely the same; her celebration of nature hits home with particular force this autumn. There have been many challenges this year but I know that autumn also symbolizes newness and I am finally ready for that and a piece of that home-made pumpkin pie that a Mississippi girlfriend brought by “to cut your cravings.”

My son and I have raked piles and piles of leaves, some crested with pine cones and tennis balls where our Bichon Frise has lackadaisically placed them. Mostly they have scattered now, no thanks to the high winds. I’ve set out an infinite number of acorns for the squirrels who grab them up with deliberate intention, sometimes tussling with each other in their effort to make a score. Our pumpkin, bought from a Jamestown church, sits on my porch steps and gleams with an almost religious fervor in the dying autumn light. I step outside to try and catch a falling leaf because I’ve heard the superstition that it is good luck!

The poet Keats was right about this time of year being “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.” I’m pondering that sentiment when the phone rings and a Chinese friend informs me to light white candles against the growing darkness of the season or, alternatively, to place white flowers on my table. She tells me that white is the color of autumn in the Chinese tradition. For me the fall is the time when I concentrate on nudging the stories out of me that need telling and the beauty of nature is the exact tonic that provides the inspiration. An elderly neighbor drops by and I show him some photos I’ve taken of the exuberant reds, oranges and yellows that dominate the trees across the broad stretch of Kernersville, reverberating their statements powerfully in each section of the town and he says, simply, “Don’t that beat all?” In that moment, silence is golden and I am grateful, for however briefly, we have touched souls.

Most Popular Today: Remodel Kitchens and Baths

Kitchens and baths deserve rethinking when you are ready to remodel. We have had kitchens back-to-back this year to remodel. Nothing makes your home more up to date than remodeling your kitchen. It is easy to update most rooms with a fresh coat of paint and a few new light fixtures and some awesome pillows, but kitchens deserve lots of thought for the best floor plan layout and planning.

That is where we come in. We have an amazing staff of designers that are the absolute best at scale and planning. I have to say that kitchen and bath planning is our specialty, and the best part is, we turnkey the project. We are passionate about what we do and we will see the project through. Kitchens need style and suitability, but also, it matters how it works when you are preparing food, cooking, and entertaining. Aesthetics and function should coexist in conformity. Asking the correct questions allows us to figure all of this out with the client. Sometimes we tweak the cabinets to encompass the specifics of what is stored inside the cabinets and drawers, such as utensils, knife blocks and spices.

We stay up-to-date with the trends in the latest kitchens and baths. But the main thing we do for our clients is steer them to a classic design that will stay in style for years to come for them to enjoy. From the start of planning a new or renovated kitchen, think about the connections to the rest of the house, and that is what we do for you.

God Bless,

Dating Red Flags I’ve Ignored (Just to Name a Few)

THE GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT

My first year away at college, one of the classes I was taking was partially taught by a graduate teaching assistant who was in his mid-30s and relatively attractive. He started showing an interest in me, even though he was contractually not allowed to fraternize with students. At 19, I was extremely naive and was infatuated with the fact that someone in graduate school who was originally from San Diego and seemed so cool was giving me crumbs of attention. I was obsessed with reality TV and asked him if he knew the cast of Laguna Beach, since he was from California (bless my young, inexperienced heart). Naturally, he lied and said he had met a few of them, making me even more intrigued. I told him numerous times that I didn’t drink because I was underage and that I was also not interested in a casual hookup. He reassured me that he wanted me to come hang out with him in his apartment solely to “get to know me.” I arrived at his apartment to see about 30 family photos laid out on his kitchen counter, of which he went through and named all of his family members over the span of about five minutes. Immediately after that, he asked me to play a drinking game and tried to make out with me. I also wish I could say that I stood up for myself adequately that night, but the story sadly took a dark turn, and only became worse throughout the remainder of the semester. He continued on to get his

Ph.D., and is now a professor at a well-known university. I probably should have reported him so that he would have been removed as a graduate teaching assistant to avoid this happening to other young women, but I was too afraid and ashamed at the time, and felt partially responsible for being in the situation in the first place. This story might provide a bit of context as to why I later went on to have so many horrendous dating experiences that I can now (mostly) laugh and write about.

DELAYED PUBERTY

When I was a junior in college, I started seeing a man who I thought was 26 or 27 at the most, because he looked quite young and was also a college student and worked in my college gym. After a few dates, I got curious, Googled him, and found out that he was indeed 38 years old. I wish I could say that this is when I stopped seeing him, but it was not. He told me he was also not over his ex-girlfriend who left him because he lied to her about having a career as a teacher. Things inevitably crashed and burned, and I am ashamed to say that it wasn’t even my choice to end things. His excuse for looking so young at 38? Delayed puberty.

HALLOWEEN PARTY

Very early on in a “situationship” I found myself in with someone I met at a part-time job in college, the guy invited me to a Halloween party he and his neighbors were throwing. A few days later, he revoked the

invitation because there would be “too many people going already.” A couple of weeks later, I find out that he has been arrested on charges of statutory rape that allegedly occurred on the night of the party. I like to think of this as divine intervention. The trial lasted around two years and he was eventually acquitted. The real kicker? He had a girlfriend the entire time who lived in a different city that he overtly lied to me about as well.

JADED BARTENDER

When I lived in Downtown Durham in my mid-twenties, I spent nearly two years sitting at a local bar on Saturday nights pining after a bartender. He told me he was struggling after being fined for tax evasion, that he ruined the best relationship of his life by “leaving town,” and explicitly told me that he doesn’t like to go on dates, but would make an exception for me. He initiated plans and canceled twice before his best friend accidentally spilled the beans that the guy actually wasn’t that interested. After all of this, I still dolled myself up every weekend to sit at the bar and hope he would finally come to his senses and realize that we were meant to be. He never did. To make matters worse, I also tried to make him jealous by bringing other men to the bar while he was working and flirting with them in front of him. My efforts were futile and if I could go back in time and slap some self-worth and dignity into myself, I absolutely would.

3 Ways to Create a Consistent Brand Experience

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

Whether we’re talking about mashed potatoes, baked goods or branding, consistency matters. All jokes aside, the business world is more competitive than ever with several markets beginning to feel over saturated so when you’re looking to stand out, creating a consistent brand can do the trick!

Building the “like, know, and trust” factor by showing up consistently as a brand is the secret sauce for success. When people feel like they know what to expect from your business they believe in the value you provide. This month, I’m sharing three strategies to create a consistent brand experience and foster connection that converts!

#1 DEFINE YOUR BRAND PERSONALITY & VALUES

This is the foundation on which your brand will stand. Think about the relationships in your life and how important personality and values are to those being successful. Since business - good business - is rooted in relationships, this is no different. Get past the surface stuff and carve out what you truly value most as a business to standout from the competition.

Ask yourself these questions to help you get clear!

• What is the mission and vision of my small business?

• What values are close to my heart as a business owner?

• Who is my target audience, and what do they value in a brand?

• How do I want customers to feel when they interact with my brand?

Your answers should not only define your brand personality and values, but how you commit to showing up in your business across all interactions, both in person and online. When your messaging, visuals, and actions consistently reflect these core elements, it becomes easier for customers to recognize, understand, and resonate with your brand.

#2 CULTIVATE A MEMORABLE & AUTHENTIC BRAND VOICE

Nailing your brand’s visual identity tends to be at the forefront of branding when in reality, cultivating a memorable and authentic brand voice is essential for small businesses. From simple things like knowing which salutations and sign offs to use in email, to having a go-to tone for social media content vs. customer service issues, strategic brand voice is key. You want your personality to shine through and help your leads and customers feel like they know your business.

Here are a few important customer interaction areas to maintain an authentic brand voice across:

• Content Creation - Think short form and long form content like newsletters, podcasts, blog posts, videos and more. Everything you write or record can have the vibe your brand wants established.

• Social Media - Every platform your brand occupies gives the opportunity to choose which lens you want your audience to see you through; friendly, professional, laid-back, etc. posts as well as comments and messages should be replied to in ways that feel natural to your brand.

• Email - Keep a consistent tone, style, and messaging in all of your email marketing and regular correspondence.

• Consultations - The very first touchpoint has power to convey who you are and set the tone for what that relationship with your brand looks like. Ensure these interactions showcase your brand’s personality, values and voice.

• Marketing Collateral - Physical marketing should leave an impact and infuse your brand voice into simple brochures or even packaging.

#3 DELIVER A SPECIFIC CUSTOMER JOURNEY

Cultivating an authentic brand voice is essential, but that’s only when it complements your customer experience. If you want to build trust and loyalty, the communication and quality of each interaction throughout your customer’s journey working with you matters.

Here are a few key phases of your customer journey to focus on:

• Lead Building - When your customer is first becoming aware of your brand and considering your offers, how do you speak to them and create interest and decision?

• Ready to Buy - How does your brand energy or voice change when your lead moves to the consideration and decision stage as a buyer?

• Customer Experience - Which of your brand values shines through once they’ve purchased? Where is there opportunity to align your messaging to carry them through?

• Loyalty Building - Create brand advocates through your customers by keeping them engaged and informed while reinforcing your brand’s reliability. When customers come to know what to expect from your brand, not just in terms of product or service quality, but also in the way you communicate and engage with them, that is where magic happens.

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, create a brand language guide to use as a reference point as you create new offers, build content, interact with clients and allow it to be the north star of your brand. This guide can outline your brand’s visual guidelines, tone of voice, messaging guidelines and client experience steps to help you stay consistent.

YOUR MOST Stylish Investment

In business for over 18 years, ProStone Granite & Cabinetry is skilled at taking your project from start to finish with ease, efficiency, and impeccable style!

From on-the-spot pricing right in their showroom to a thoughtfully managed timeline, ultra-professional communication, and dedication to a customer’s complete happiness with the end result, the grateful words of current and returning customers speak for themselves!

“I had my kitchen countertops replaced and absolutely love them! Dave was great to work with, and was very helpful through the entire process. The install guys were also very skilled and meticulous. I would highly recommend ProStone Granite!” - Ashley

“We did a remodel of our kitchen, and ProStone had the best price, offered exceptional service, and the install crew paid attention to every detail. We are extremely satisfied with not only the product, but the service and communication they provided along the way.” - Michael P.

October 2023 | 49

The ProStone team is full-service all the way, with no sub-contractors involved. Based on the type of stone you’re shopping for, they can typically give you a price while you’re in the showroom. “Most folks like that we can give them a price on the spot!” says Manager Ross Edwards. “We also sell our clients only the materials they actually need, not the entire slab, and we regularly maintain a stock of around 40 different stones, so no matter your style, there are ample options.”

STILL THE HEART OF THE HOME!

No surprise, the ProStone experts tell us an updated kitchen still sells your home! It’s the one area most people spend a lot of time in, and it’s definitely where families create the most memories. If you’re entertaining, arriving guests will typically go straight to the kitchen area for a drink or appetizers — and it’s the top spot where a really good conversation is likely to start!

“We are seeing a huge demand for updates to kitchens in existing homes,” says Ross. “People are spending more time than ever there, and along with the primary bathroom, kitchens are still important if

you’re selling a home. So, if you can make that investment, you’ll increase the value of your home with an updated kitchen. In today’s market, it seems folks are looking for move-in ready homes.”

ProStone Granite & Cabinetry includes around 20 dedicated employees, including two in-house installation teams, and their longevity means you can be assured of quality work.

“We all work closely together on a day-to-day basis, and are very much a family-based company,” says Ross. “That’s why most of our team members have been with us for a while! Most of our installers have worked with us for five-plus years.”

QUARTZ STILL RULES

“Quartz countertops have risen in popularity in recent years due to their durability and ability to take on the look of real stone and other materials,” explains Ross. “But styles featuring bold, dramatic sweeps of veining seem to be expanding.” He adds that ProStone sells about 65% quartz, as compared to the other materials they offer. “It has been the most popular kitchen countertop material for several years — and we expect that trend to continue!”

Ross tells us the the trend towards quartzite was also around this past year, and it’s expected to continue in 2023 and 2024 as well. “While the name of this stone is similar to quartz, they are entirely different materials,” he explains. “Quartz is a man-made countertop, while quartzite is a natural stone material. Quartzite kitchen countertops are desirable for their durability and beauty.”

While they do require sealing, they are more stain and scratch resistant than many other natural stone countertops, and quartzite comes in a wide range of colors, with a glittering texture that sparkles in the light. And, while granite lags behind quartz and quartzite in popularity, it still remains a tried-and-true stone countertop option. Although it also requires sealing, it’s a highly durable and low-maintenance stone, making it ideal for busy families. With granite, you’ll have peace of mind that your countertop is resistant to stains, scratches, chips, and heat.

While jumping into a remodel project can feel overwhelming, a timetable with ProStone can be stressfree, always backed with their professional support. For a countertop remodel, the team will come to your home and create a template of the available space. Approximately two weeks later, they can typically complete the installation. If you’re new to the game and still trying to visualize your dream look, consider starting with a visit to the ProStone showroom, bringing along a rough drawing of your available counter space. From that point on, you’re in the most capable hands!

“ProStone did a great job on our bathroom countertop! David was very helpful during the selection process. He never rushed us and answered every question. The people who measured and installed for us were also very professional, and we are so happy with the results! I would recommend them, and will use them again when we remodel our kitchen.” - Lynda S.

“After getting two estimates for quartz countertops as part of a kitchen remodel project, a friend recommended ProStone as a third option. I am happy I made the contact! The ProStone team was friendly, professional, and efficient. From the initial phone call to project completion, the process took only 18 days. That includes measurements, quartz selection, and installation. The quality of the work is A+. I highly recommend David and the ProStone team.” - Len J.

Sweet Potato & Black Bean Chili

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 large sweet potato, peeled and diced

1 large onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons chili powder

4 teaspoons ground cumin

INSTRUCTIONS

¼ teaspoon salt

2 ½ cups water

2, 15-ounce cans low-sodium black beans, drained and rinsed

1, 14-ounce can low-sodium diced tomatoes

4 teaspoons lime juice

½ cup chopped fresh cilantro

Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook until the onion begins to soften.

Add sweet potatoes to the onion, stir until well blended. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin and salt. Stir constantly for around 30 seconds to help seasonings blend well. Add water and bring ingredients to a simmer. Cover the pot and reduce heat to maintain a constant simmer. Cook until the sweet potato is tender, 10-15 minutes. Once diced potato chunks are tender, add black beans, tomatoes and lime juice.

Increase heat to high and return to a simmer with new ingredients. Stir often. Continue to simmer until soup thickens.

Remove heat and place soup in individual bowls. Add chopped cilantro to the top of each bowl.

For a balanced meal, serve with a vegetable and fruit such as roasted green beans and freshly sliced apples.

Bringing Sparkle & Shine into Your Life!

Brandy McMillian, a driven entrepreneur, realtor, and a devoted mom, found herself exhausted from constantly adhering to someone else’s schedule every day of the week. She longed for the freedom to align her work with her personal aspirations, particularly being there for her children’s ball games and school activities, and especially sick days.

“I really wanted to be with my kids when they needed me, without the constant worry of pay cuts or the pressure to make up for missed work hours,” Brandy shared.

With this desire for flexibility and a passion for meeting a community need, Brandy enthusiastically launched Your First Class Cleaning in WinstonSalem. The vision was clear – to offer the community the joy of waking up or returning home to a sparkling, immaculate space.

Brandy admitted, “Honestly, when I first started, I was a bundle of nerves! Would I be able to make it all work? I firmly believe in the power of word-ofmouth and consistent customer referrals in building a successful business.”

For Brandy, community involvement and collective effort are vital for propelling a new small business to success. She actively supports fellow local small business owners and deeply values the friendships fostered with her clientele over the years.

“Our client relationships are incredibly important to us; most of them have been with us since the very beginning,” she expressed.

The Your First Class Cleaning team offers flexible cleaning schedules, ranging from weekly and bi-weekly to monthly services. They also accommodate

move-in and move-out cleanings, as well as one-time cleanings for special circumstances or family events. Their services extend to both residential and commercial clients, and they have a strong presence in the apartment and new construction sectors within the area.

Interestingly, local realtors form a significant portion of their client base. Brandy, being a realtor herself with Reel Realty in Kernersville, draws upon her prior experience in move-in and move-out cleanings for realtors. This unique blend of expertise allows them to serve a broader spectrum of clients in the real estate industry, seamlessly integrating the two domains. When asked about what sets Your First Class Cleaning apart from other options in Winston-Salem, Brandy emphasized their team’s dedication to impressing customers at every turn, valuing even the smallest gestures.

“We strive to offer quality service and empower our staff to go above and beyond, ensuring each client receives top-notch customer service and complete satisfaction, regardless of their circumstances,” Brandy explained.

Brandy acknowledges the unwavering support of her incredible staff and understands that every company, especially a small business, thrives on meaningful relationships. Thus, she has built Your First Class Cleaning on a foundation of trust, mutual respect, and empathy for their valued clientele.

If your home or business deserves the exceptional touch of Your First Class Cleaning, reach out to them at 336-409-1133 or via email at yourfirstclasscleaning@gmail.com. Let them infuse sparkle and shine into your life!

THE ART OF BREATHWORK: Your Path to Total Well-Being

Take a moment for yourself, right now. Inhale deeply, and as you exhale, let’s dive into the remarkable world of breathwork. It’s more than just a life-sustaining act; it’s the key to unlock a treasure of well-being encompassing your physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional realms. So, are you ready to embark on this journey of conscious breathing? Let’s go!

INHALE, EXHALE: DANCING WITH CONSCIOUS BREATHING

Breathing, it’s something we do subconsciously, without even thinking about it. But here’s the beauty – we can also choose to bring awareness to our breath. With breathwork, we transform this everyday act into an art form, and that art can be your gateway to an extraordinary life.

Breathwork’s Marvels: Your Well-Being BFF

1. Release Stress, Depression, and Anxiety: Imagine saying farewell to stress, depression, and anxiety. Breathwork can make it happen. By slowing down and deepening your breath, you activate your body’s relaxation superpowers, melting away mental tension.

2. Boost Your Immunity: Yes, you read that right – your breath can boost your immune system! Science is on board. Breathwork, especially techniques like diaphragmatic breathing, gives your immunity an edge by reducing inflammation and enhancing circulation.

3. Forge Unbreakable Willpower: Breathwork is more than inhaling and exhaling; it’s a mental workout. Through regular breathwork practice, you train your mind to stay in the present moment, bolstering your ability to overcome challenges.

4. Confidence Unleashed: Breathwork isn’t just about air; it’s about building a profound connection with yourself. As you become more aware of your breath and master its control, your self-image blossoms, and your confidence skyrockets.

5. Sweet Slumber: If you’re wrestling with sleepless nights, breathwork might be your knight in shining armor. Specific breathing techniques, like the 4-7-8 method, soothe your nervous system, paving the way for restful sleep.

6. Laser-Sharp Focus: The effects of breathwork on concentration are mindblowing. Through mindful breathing exercises, you turbocharge your cognitive prowess, gain mental clarity, and your productivity.

Breathwork 101: Your Starting Point for Profound Transformation

Embarking on this journey of breath mastery may feel like stepping into the unknown, but it starts with simple, small steps. Here are three techniques to kickstart your voyage into conscious breathing:

1. Deep Belly Breathing: Place one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Inhale gently through your nose, letting your abdomen rise as your lungs fill with life. Exhale slowly through your mouth, allowing your belly to sink. Dedicate a few minutes each day to this practice, and you’ll gift yourself heightened awareness and a tranquil mind.

2. Alternate Nostril Breathing: Find a comfy spot and close your right nostril with your right thumb. Inhale deeply through your left nostril, then seal it with your right ring finger. Release your thumb and exhale through your right nostril. Inhale through the right nostril, close it, and exhale through the left. Immerse yourself in this rhythmic dance of breath, focusing on the sensation of each inhale and exhale.

3. Box Breathing: Picture a square with four equal sides. Inhale slowly through your nose, counting to four as you trace the first side of the square in your mind. Hold your breath for a count of four as you continue tracing. Exhale gently through your nose for four counts, following the third side. Finally, hold your breath for four counts to complete the square. Repeat this box breathing for a few minutes, immersing yourself in the calming rhythm of your breath.

Be gentle with yourself, and give yourself time as you dive into the world of conscious breathing. Start with these practices, and when you’re ready, embrace more advanced techniques.

IN CLOSING

Your breath is a masterpiece, holding the power to transform your well-being. With breathwork, you can bid adieu to stress, fortify your immunity, summon unshakable willpower, boost your self-image, embrace restful sleep, and ignite your focus. Make breathwork your daily companion, and savor the incredible transformations it brings. As you read these words, pause, take a deep breath, and revel in the beauty of conscious breathing. You’ve got this!

Making Dollars, Making $ense

The Importance of Multiple Buckets

We save money for different purposes: retirement, travel, unexpected expenses, home renovations, etc. Here at Marzano Capital Group, we are big proponents of the “multiple bucket approach.” Different buckets (or savings vehicles) should be used for different purposes. Here are the different buckets I am referring to:

1. Emergency Fund – There is no exact science when it comes to how much money you should have in your emergency fund. As a rule of thumb, at least 3-6 months of expenses would be a good starting point and on the higher end if you have a single income household. This bucket is important because it serves as protection, so you do not have to dip into retirement savings or investments that are allocated for something else when unexpected expenses arise. A basic savings account or money market are suitable for this bucket.

2. Pre-tax retirement – Common accounts within this bucket are: 401(k), 403(b) and Traditional IRA (Individual Retirement Account). Most employers offer a retirement plan as part of the employment benefits package. Usually, this retirement plan comes with an “employer match” that helps the employee accelerate their savings on a pre-tax basis (qualified savings). This is a great tool and one you should take advantage of, especially if a match is offered. IRAs are non-company sponsored accounts that you can open and fund on your own. There are contribution limits on these types of retirement accounts and the earliest you can access this bucket without penalty is age 59 ½.

3. Roth – This bucket could be in the form of Roth IRA or Roth 401(k). Roth savings are done on an after-tax basis and while there is not a tax benefit during the accumulation stage, the tax-free nature of all withdrawals after age 59 ½ can prove to be impactful. This means all of your contributions AND all of your gains will be tax free. There are contribution limits for Roth IRAs and the earliest you can access this bucket without penalty is age 59 ½ as well.

4. Non-retirement – These accounts can be in an individual name or joint names and have several key components. The first is liquidity. With nonretirement accounts, you can access your money without penalty at any time. You may owe some taxes on withdrawals, depending which investments are sold to produce the money you need. Secondly, there are no minimum or maximum contribution limits. Therefore, you can fund non-retirement accounts with after-tax dollars at a comfortable level within your budget. Often when someone retires before the age of 59 ½, it is the money in their non-retirement account that bridges the gap between their last paycheck and social security and/or retirement account distributions. A lot of people have goals for retiring in their 50s but fail to have a plan for how they will accomplish this.

All of these buckets/accounts are important and serve a certain purpose. By utilizing each one of them, it can help keep you from using the wrong ones at the wrong times. We would be happy to help you navigate which buckets you should be adding to and help determine the savings rate for each one.

Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax deductible in the contribution year, with current income tax due at withdrawal. Withdrawals prior to age 59 ½ may result in a 10% IRS penalty tax in addition to current income tax. A Roth IRA offers tax deferral on any earnings in the account. Qualified withdrawals of earnings from the account are tax-free. Withdrawals of earnings prior to age 59 ½ or prior to the account being opened for 5 years, whichever is later, may result in a 10% IRS penalty tax. Limitations and restrictions may apply.

Mixing Up a Brand New Festival

The Triad’s First Fizz & Beats™ Zero Proof Fest

Festival season is upon us, and it is time to book your weekends with fun activities for your family and friends. I know I like to fill up my weekends with festivals and outdoor events. Being an event coordinator, I’ve had 20 years of event experience, and this year my team was searching for something new and exciting to offer the community.

Two of the greatest benefits of owning and running Favored Conferences and Events, LLC are the opportunity to help others and the chance to build meaningful connections. This is where my team began to dream: “What Favored event could we create to bring the community together and deliver an unforgettable experience?”

That’s how Fizz & Beats™ Zero Proof Fest was born! The Favored team wanted to bring the Triad its FIRST Zero Proof Festival!

You might ask what inspired this new concept? Well, it was a combination of an amazing team, a history of working in substance use prevention and some ideas around mindfulness that caused us to dream and share the idea with others.

We couldn’t have predicted the overwhelming interest and response from the community! We heard things like: “This sounds so amazing!” “What a great idea!” “We don’t drink, and there is never anything for us.” “We don’t mind it but people don’t use moderation.” “I have family members in recovery and they would love this!”

As a team, we were able to create something new, exciting, and meaningful. What makes it even better? We are supporting an amazing non-profit, The Greater Piedmont Adult & Teen Challenge, which helps people overcome addictions and live a life of recovery and faith. But, just as pleased as we are about building these connections and helping others, we are equally as excited about a day of showcasing INCREDIBLE LOCAL MUSICIANS, DELICIOUS FOOD TRUCKS, AND AN ARRAY OF UNIQUE MOCKTAILS AND BEVERAGES, specially crafted for FIZZ & BEATS™ at Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden in Kernersville!

Fizz & Beats™ is not your typical festival! Not only can you indulge in delicious food and mocktails, you’ll have the chance to explore amazing vendors for those special holiday gifts. And let’s not forget about the festival scenery: the breathtaking renowned botanical garden backdrop for our full musical lineup.

Building into our mission of connection, our team is able to showcase a variety of local musical talent that ranges from the hip hop lyrics of Monty!, the beats of F4SHO, country vibes from Taylor Mason, Indie/Folk from Sandy Uselton, and closing out the event a local favorite: Joy Rivers from Souljam with her band Joy and The Experience! The dream of our team comes together as people will share these moments with friends and family, all with a safe and sober environment, not lacking in fun activities, contests, prizes, and lawn games!

We are keeping connection at the heart of the event, so we’ve partnered with some incredible local drink vendors to bring you unique mocktails that you can experience and celebrate. You will receive a complimentary beverage with your ticket, and have the chance to drop your “voting ice crystal” into the cup of your favorite vendor, helping us award the first annual Mix Master! And just to “mix it up,” a couple of our Mixologists will create a favorite beverage for a blind taste test!

Our team is full of foodies and music lovers! With Fizz & Beats™, you’ll get a variety of incredible music and tastes to satisfy your senses along with the amazing aesthetics of the gorgeous Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden! What’s not to love?!

Join us in making this event amazing! Be a part of the connection, community, and impact! Mark your calendar for OCTOBER 22 from 1-6pm at the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden in Kernersville. You can get tickets by visiting our website or scan the QR code in our ad.

Whether you are a foodie, passionate about investing in the community, on a journey of recovery or just someone who knows how to have a great time, this festival is definitely for you! Detection in Time

:

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, we’re sharing an interview with local artist Shawn Windmyer and her mission to promote early detection for people everywhere. Shawn’s “Detection in Time” project has become an emblem of hope that supports breast cancer patients and their families.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK OVERALL, AS AN ARTIST?

As an artist and 34 year breast cancer survivor and thriver due to early detection, I paint with symbolism and meaning. My inspiration comes from my life experience with my relief work complementing my expressive fashion style that reveals powerful emotions embodied on each canvas. Each piece is combined to give pleasure and fulfillment to the intellect as well as the spirit.

TELL US ABOUT THE “DETECTION IN TIME” PROJECT LINE AND ITS MISSION.

I started this project as a painting and a testament to my battle with breast cancer. The painting is very symbolic with the large clock showing the importance of time with the gilded keys representing how early detection truly is key.The face of the clock has a distressed look, representing our trials and tribulations of life, and of course, encircled by the pink ribbon of Hope.

I pulled from my fashion career as a designer, turning my acrylic paintings on canvas into beautiful 100% silk scarves that serve as inspiration for the wearer. What began with the scarves, quickly became an emblem of hope and evolved into a fashion brand, reproduced on clothing, accessories, merchandise and gifts with a portion of each sale donated to support breast health awareness organizations and supportive agencies. In prior years, proceeds supported the North Fork Breast Health Coalition in Long Island, NY. I relocated to Forsyth County a few years ago and am proud to share that our mission has moved with us to the Piedmont Triad in Winston-Salem, NC.

HOW HAS YOUR OWN HEALTH JOURNEY IMPACTED YOUR WORK WITH “DETECTION IN TIME”?

This project is very close to my heart. Never having anything but a sore throat, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 32 years old after finding a lump myself. Back then they were doing radical mastectomies and were just on the cusp of new thinking; I was a candidate for a lumpectomy. I had all my lymph nodes removed from my left arm, followed by chemo and radiation, because I was so young. It’s a very unique experience, being told you have cancer, not feeling or looking sick, and the only thing making you sick is your treatment. My spirituality and God, friends and family got me through treatment, losing my hair and getting well.

When you get hit with something as devastating as breast cancer, any cancer, you don’t realize how strong you really are. At first, it’s about surviving, then it’s about conquering. As an artist, I was inspired to create a mission painting as a reminder to all women to get screened regularly:

“Get smart and get checked.”

CREATING SOMETHING SO PERSONAL TAKES A LOT OF VULNERABILITY. WHY WAS THIS SUCH AN IMPORTANT PROJECT FOR YOU?

Thirty-four years later, I am strong and healthy and am living proof that early detection saves lives. Honestly, I decided to turn my painting into silk scarves

because I wanted the mission to be out in the world as a fashion statement sending a strong message to all women to be checked. I love that the scarf drapes beautifully telling the story and making an impact, without it screaming “breast cancer.”

I’M SURE YOU RECEIVE MEMORABLE FEEDBACK FOR THIS WORK, DO ANY STORIES STAND OUT?

There are so many! I was honored when my oncologist had it framed and hung in his office! It also hangs in Southampton hospital and radiology offices on Long Island, NY and in the mammography dressing rooms for women to view, which feels so special.

One of my favorite moments was being part of the South Fork Breast Health Coalition’s annual Bra Auction. As a chosen designer I was provided a bra to redesign for the runway that will be auctioned to help raise funds. The model I got to design for had a double mastectomy with reconstruction and when I saw her walk down that runway wearing my design depicting “Detection in Time,” tears came to my eyes! The highest bid was $1,250 from a Stroneybrook Cardiologist and it was so exciting!

The Benefits of Thrifting and Using Second Hand

Thrifting and buying second hand products has become a popular trend throughout recent years. It is a favorite hobby for many people and has grown thanks to social media. All thrifting entails for a shopper is to visit a thrift store, yard sale, or an online marketplace and buy gently used items at a discounted price, resulting in giving the items a second life and saving money. In fact, the word “thrift” comes from 1300s Middle English, meaning “prosperity, savings” and was formed from using resources methodically to prosper. In the article, “Thrifting through the Ages: How We’ve Strayed from Central Values,” professor of practice and a fashion expert at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Dennita Sewell, stated that “The secondhand trade is one of the oldest forms of clothing for the common man.” However, the type of thrifting we know today wasn’t developed until the creation of organizations such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill in the mid 1800s to early 1900s. Fast-forward to 2023 and the habit still has similar roots from its origin with additional advantages. Thrifting and using second hand has a multitude of benefits that range from personal rewards to positive environmental impacts, including the ones below.

1. First and one of the most important benefits is that thrifting saves you money. Research has found that purchasing second-hand can save a person around $500-850 a year on clothes alone. Also, keep in mind that thrifting doesn’t mean just clothes. Places like Facebook Marketplace and others are great for finding household items, toys, office supplies, and much more. I know people who have found televisions and party decorations through thrifting. Lastly, once you are done with your item, turn it around and re-thrift it. You can make a profit and provide a new life for products that you once thrifted.

2. There is usually something for everyone. Thrift stores have a wide range of items for shoppers of all ages. If you are on the hunt for a specific item, try a second-hand shop first, before buying new. You just may find it. Don’t forget - the inventory at thrift stores changes all the time. For example, recently I was looking for kitchen stools. After a few trips to the thrift stores, I found exactly what I wanted, with some extra money still in my pocket.

3. While there is something for everyone, items are more unique and one of a kind. Part of the wide range of items also includes the ages of the objects. Products could be modern and recent or they could be 20 plus years old filled with nostalgia. Vintage clothes, furniture, and knick-knacks from years past could be found. In addition, higher quality brand and brand name items could be on thrift store shelves. Coach purses have been spotted by buyers, as well as Gucci bags.

4. You can mix and match the pieces to create personalized items. I love finding older items and refurbishing them with a little paint and creativity. Old window panes can easily be turned into picture frames. The stools I mentioned that I bought are brand new, with a little sanding and paint. Another idea is to find plates and candleholders and turn them into serving plates. The options are endless as you never know what you’ll find.

5. Purchasing second-hand is also environmentally friendly. Hundreds of items, that still have life in them, are thrown into landfills each year. New clothes and other items use large amounts of energy and resources, and in return create massive amounts of pollution. Then, add in the increased demand for brand new items, causing the increase in new products and the environmental impact is disastrous. When a person buys second-hand, they are keeping items out of the landfills, oceans, and other natural areas longer, thus helping the environment. Also, thrift store items usually come in less packaging, creating less pollution.

6. In addition to being eco-friendly, thrifting assists the economy. Buying second-hand means your money is going into a local business and/or contributing towards a good cause, rather than going into the pockets of a big-box store.

7. Items can come already pre-assembled. Toys that usually come in a thousand little pieces can get really old to put together, as well as needing five different tools to set up a piece of furniture. When products come already assembled, as they do in a thrift store, you will not only save money, but time.

Thrifting and buying second-hand items is a thrill and a challenge. You are able to be creative, while encouraging others to do the same. If you haven’t given thrifting a chance, what are you waiting for? Obviously, the pros outweigh the cons and these are just a few of the many, many benefits of thrifting and buying second-hand offers.

CRISPY GRILLED CHICKEN WINGS

For this month, I wanted to share a great recipe for some pretty simple, super crispy grilled chicken wings. These are on the weekly rotation in my house, especially during the fall for watching football. My favorite flavor as of lately is a Spicy Japanese BBQ Sauce on the wings; this combined with the Holy Voodoo seasoning and that char from the fire on the grill creates an incredible flavor that will be a gameday hit!

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 dozen separated chicken wings (scale recipe up for larger servings)

• Meat Church Holy Voodoo seasoning

• Bachans Spicy Japanese BBQ Sauce

• Sesame seeds

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Fire up your grill to high heat. I typically do these on my Kamado grill using lump charcoal running around 400500 degrees.

• Set up two cooking zones on your grill; in the kamado, I have one grate low right over the coals and one grate elevated a little higher. If your grates do not separate – have hot coals on one side of the grill and leave a cool side to finish the wings.

• While the grill is getting heated up, pat the wings dry, apply the Holy Voodoo seasoning generously and let the seasoning adhere for at least 15 minutes.

• Throw the wings directly over the coals and let them cook for about 15 minutes (depending on grill temp) – flipping halfway until you get some good char and they are temping around 150.

• Once there is good char all over the wing and the temperature is getting close, move to the indirect side of the grill and let them finish. I like to let them cook until they temp around 175185 to be nice and crispy. But, if you’re in a time crunch, poultry is good to go at 165.

• Once the wings are finished up, place them in a large mixing bowl and add at least a ½ cup of the Spicy Bachans BBQ Sauce and toss the wings until completely coated.

• Lastly, add some sesame seeds on top for a garnish and you’re ready to enjoy! The Holy Voodoo Cajun seasoning complements the Spicy Japanese BBQ sauce perfectly for a different type of wing flavor to switch it up from the typical Buffalo or BBQ sauce!

THE TRELLIS TOUCH GRANTS A FINAL WISH

did not want to be in a wheelchair, but rather stand and say his vows to Jeanette.

His body grew tired. He lost a tremendous amount of weight. His medications required an IV line inserted in his neck. Unfortunately, when that line had a bleed, he refused having another saying, “I’m done.” Jeanette arrived at the hospital to face this decision. Today, she often thinks about how she could have responded and possibly saved him. Yet she says, “I knew the Lord had a plan. The time had come for Todd to be at peace.”

The hospital suggested hospice care, and his family chose Trellis Supportive Care. They had experienced Trellis’ care with another family member and knew Todd would be in the best possible hands. Todd arrived at the KBR Hospice Home on Tuesday, June 8. The following day he had a visit with his Pastor and was determined he was not going anywhere until he married Jeanette. “I knew how he felt about marriage, but I was shocked,” she shared. Their dear friend Annette, knowing how deeply Todd wanted to be married, stepped in to help. She sent Jeanette for a marriage license, calling ahead to make sure the license could be obtained on the spot and arranged for a notary so Todd could sign the necessary paperwork.

Jeanette Adams met her beloved Todd Adams when they both worked as flight attendants for US Airways. Todd had been on the job since 1989 and had quickly become a favorite among his crew members and passengers. He put his passengers at ease with his humor. He recognized military personnel on his flights and honored their service. As Jeanette will tell you, “When Todd was in the terminal, other crew members would make a beeline to see him. He was hilarious, goofy, tall, handsome, the whole package.” She adds “It was how he treated people, though that was his most attractive attribute.”

On a trip based out of Charlotte 2010 they shared a meal. She said, “It was easy. He was all the things that made me happy and comfortable.” For the next four years they would coordinate schedules as often as possible. “Working with him was fun and it was our way of dating,” Jeanette said. Todd and Jeanette wanted to get married, but life got in the way.

Fast forward to 2017. While at the doctor for an unrelated issue, Todd was diagnosed with a completely different condition. He had stage four cancer. His mindset in the wake of this news was remarkable. Jeanette said, “You never would have known. He never had a ‘poor me’ mentality.”

For a few years, Todd responded to protocols and medications. Then, ultimately, faced surgery and rehab. Jeanette, during Covid, took advantage of early retirement to help Todd when he left rehab. That was not to be. Infections plagued his body, sending him to the hospital for six weeks. The idea of a wedding was delayed as Todd

The wedding was scheduled for Friday, June 11 at 10: 30 am. Jeanette asked a nurse for permission to allow a few more people into his room for the ceremony. Jeanette was then presented with “The Trellis Touch.” Trellis staff asked if they could help. “I was floored, we were only under Trellis’ care for four days. I won’t ever be able to thank them enough. I am so grateful for the treatment we received and the compassion they had as we watched him go. They did so much and provide so much, all while comforting us.” Along with Annette, Trellis made sure there were flowers, cake, champagne, music, and a photographer.

Annette was Jeanette’s Matron of Honor and Todd’s dad was his Best Man. With the help of his Pastor, Todd slid the wedding band on Jeanette’s finger. They became Mr. and Mrs. Todd Adams. Todd died six hours later. His final flight was as a married man.

Trellis Supportive Care reminds us over and over again that hospice care is not about helping people die, but rather living fully until the very end. The Trellis team is always honored when they can help make memories and special moments happen for those they serve; like Jeanette and Todd.

Hormones are your body’s powerhouse. They are running the show and dictate how you feel, how well you sleep, your metabolism, your sex drive, and on and on. When they are balanced, you are going to feel your best, because your hormones are working in harmony together. On the flip side, when you have imbalances, you may feel like you are going mad, feeling overwhelmed by simple things, have hot flashes, feel sleep deprived, even gain unexplained weight.

Hormones are chemical messengers throughout the body that control bodily functions. They are constantly communicating and orchestrating within the endocrine system, creating, and releasing hormones throughout the bloodstream. The endocrine system is a host of glands, like your ovaries, the thyroid, adrenal glands, and more. Even our organs are involved, like our liver, the kidneys and our stomachs. Hormones are racing through us!

Your adrenal glands produce a hormone you have likely heard of, cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. It is responsible for helping you cope with a stressor (those induced by an external stress like a tense work meeting or an internal stressor like going for a run) and also helps reduce inflammation, regulate your blood sugar and blood pressure, and sync your circadian rhythm.

Your hypothalamus, a part of the brain, is responsible for making dopamine, which you might associate with happiness. But it is a neurotransmitter that oversees your memory, mood, motivation, learning and more. Dopamine also helps to keep you safe; it controls your flight or fight response to situations. When your dopamine levels are on point, you will be happy, motivated, alert and find that focus comes naturally. When your dopamine levels are low, you will feel tired, have brain fog, feel moody and maybe a little unhappy when you aren’t so sure why.

We can eat foods that will help our bodies regulate many of our hormones (there are an endless amount), but I picked these two specifically because who doesn’t want to respond well to stress? In life, stress is unavoidable no matter where you are on your journey. And we all want to feel happy, motivated and be able to have sharp focus when we need it.

Feed Your Hormones

Dark chocolate helps both your dopamine and cortisol levels. It contains lots of goodness, like magnesium, which most of us struggle to meet our daily needs. Magnesium helps with sleep, muscle function and recovery and can help fight off a headache or migraine. Dark chocolate has iron, fiber, zinc, and copper. What is better than a sweet treat packed with such important hormone building blocks?

Avocados are full of magnesium, potassium, several B vitamins, vitamin K (this is essential for vitamin and mineral absorption), fiber and contain prominent levels of monounsaturated fat which your heart loves. The next time you dine at your favorite Mexican place, order the guacamole, and top your burrito, tacos, or quesadilla with fresh slices of avocado, and feed your cortisol and dopamine to healthy levels.

Seeds in whole form (not oils) like pumpkin, sesame, flax, and chia seeds are a reliable source for your omega-3 fatty acids. These are helpful in controlling blood sugar and support reduced cortisol levels. Does the term “seed cycling” sound familiar? People will rotate seeds during their fertility cycle to help balance hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

Nuts including walnuts and almonds are great options to increase dopamine and lower cortisol levels. Fermented foods with probiotics like yogurt are also a bonus for gut health and boosting your immune system. Whole fruits and veggies, particularly spinach, broccoli, apples, and watermelon are all great hormone loving options.

Staying away from certain foods will also help you balance out your hormonal imbalances. Sugar, especially refined sugars that you find in sodas and candy, increases your glucose which can raise your cortisol levels. Opt for a low glycemic sweetener when you need to sweeten something. Even maple syrup is a better option for your coffee or oatmeal than sugar. Coconut sugar or monk fruit are also great low glycemic options.

When you’re having an unexpected mood shift or feeling like no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to focus or constantly can’t recall something you know like the back of your hand, take a moment to check your diet - you might have thrown your hormones completely out of whack. Head to the grocery store and pick up some hormone-loving foods to get your body back on track, because we are what we eat after all and so are our hormones!

More Open Letters to the Men Who Dumped Me

TO THE MEDIOCRE BARTENDER,

I had to teach you how to properly make a mojito and I’ve never even been a bartender. You looked cute in your bartending suspenders, which caught my eye, but we had absolutely nothing in common. I knew things were going south when our fourth date was a trip to your gym and I had to pay for my own guest pass. Why do you talk about drugs so often if you allegedly don’t do them? You also claimed that you used to run 7 miles in 30 minutes on a regular basis, which I found extremely hard to believe. After saying you were a “relationship guy,” but quickly declining when I asked if we were going to be in a relationship after five weeks of getting to know each other, things ultimately ended in tears for me while you quickly left my apartment on my birthday while my cat stared you down. We never spoke again and I think you’re okay with that.

TO “FLORIDA BOY,”

We bonded over our mutual fear of dating bartenders due to bad past experiences (see above). I thought you were a safe bet, since we went to the same high school, although we ran in different circles for clear reasons. The cockiness you displayed in high school that you claimed was now confidence is definitely still cockiness. You just have more money now (so you say). You thought it was somewhat comical that you were mean to your coworker for being new and asking a question, which is no surprise, since you got into numerous fights in your teenage years and early twenties. You almost got evicted due to righteous indignation, and almost got charged with a hit-andrun, all within the same few weeks I was getting to know you. Although I technically ended things between us because you said something grossly disrespectful, your lack of apology and ease of letting the situation go made me feel like I was the one being rejected. That’s the only reason you’re included in these letters. I hope your new girlfriend never finds your secret Twitter account and sees all of your disgusting misogynistic tweets. On second thought, I’m sure new women you date won’t find it, because you probably won’t want to date another intelligent woman who can find your secret accounts like I did. Smart women are too much of a challenge to your ego. In your own words, I wish you the best. I hope you find what you’re looking for. Take care.

P.S. - Just reach out to your bartender ex-girlfriend already. You clearly still love her.

TO THE BEST KISSER I’VE EVER MET,

I feel like I can safely be honest in this because I know you’ll never read this, since in hindsight, I don’t think you put as much stock in our conversations as I did. You probably don’t even remember that I write, and you definitely don’t know which magazines I write for. I’d be surprised if I ever even crossed your mind at all. However, these are all negative assumptions I’m making, which is something I am aiming to work on. Months ago, I saw an episode of Dr. Phil that really resonated with me where he said, “Not everyone you lose is a loss.” The first time I wrote this letter, I was still very much longing for things to be different and for you to realize my value. After countless therapy sessions (you said I was the one who needed therapy, right?), prayers, crying spells, and efforts to somehow learn to love myself, I asked our editor to let me revise it after concluding that even though you were the one seemingly uninterested in pursuing something real with me, you were truly the one who lost me. Whether it was your age, potential substance abuse issues, different wants and desires, or a combination of the three, you mishandled me. At the same time, I should have known better than to get attached to an idea of something that was destined to fail. A part of me does wonder and I frequently ask God why I am continuing to go through so much pain after so much time has passed from such a short-lived fling (well, a fling for YOU). An even smaller part of me still hopes that things will somehow work out in the future after we both sort out our issues, but I know life rarely works that way. Hoping is only holding me back from healing. My friends and family keep assuring me that with the right person, I will feel passion and butterflies again the way I felt them with you when we kissed on the beach. Most days, I don’t think that’s possible, but my therapist told me to keep assuring myself that I will find it again until I believe it.

Sincerely,

Best North Carolina Spots to View Fall Foliage

Many North Carolinians will agree that our home state is strikingly beautiful any time of year. However, it is a well-known fact that autumn is when this state seems to come alive. Sightseers from all over the world travel to our state to view the fall leaves change color. Hues of yellows, reds, and greens paint our streets and parkways. Our mountains, valleys, and piedmont combine with perfect temperatures in the fall, drawing people in to soak in the grandeur. Plus, with over 200 species of trees, North Carolina is the perfect state for all to tour, and welcome the end of the hot summer season with the cooler days of fall.

When and where can one go to view this glorious fall foliage? Peak leaf season in our state can hit almost any time, as early as September and as late as midNovember. With this said, it is important to make sure to not plan one’s trip past November, yet also not before early September. Regarding locations to tour, there are many, which are just a short drive from Winston-Salem. Here are the top five locations to visit to experience the foliage.

Blue Ridge Parkway. Hands down, taking a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the top spots to tour to view the leaves changing colors. The Parkway, which in North Carolina runs from the Virginia border south past Asheville to Cherokee, offers more than 200 miles and over 100 tree varieties. The intensity of fall colors on the Parkway varies and of course will be dependent on weather conditions. According to the website, “Travel Awaits,” the best spots on the parkway to tour include the northernmost section near Cumberland Knob, close to the Virginia border. Other sites include where NC Highways 89, 18, and the Blue Ridge Parkway intersect, just north of Cumberland.

Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains

National Park. Cades Cove itself seems to cast a spell over all its visitors any time of year. The broad, verdant valley surrounded by mountains, is one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies. Cades Cove Loop Road offers visitors an 11mile, one-way loop road, which circles the Cove. This allows motorists the opportunity to sightsee at a leisurely pace. Thanks to this spot becoming increasingly popular, make sure to allow at least 2 to 4 hours to tour. Traffic can get intense during the peak fall season.

Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. When you think of Asheville, North Carolina, images of the Biltmore House immediately come to mind. The “vacation estate” built for George Vanderbilt, draws thousands from all over the world any time of year. Completed in 1895, the 250-room chateau was designed by Vanderbilt’s good friend, architect Richard Morris Hunt. The house is incredibly impressive, more so today as it was over a century ago, with the picturesque fall season being the time of year when the estate is most filled with visitors. Set in front of a backdrop of vibrant and colorful trees, the magnificent mansion is as beautiful outside as it is inside.

Clingmans Dome. At 6644 feet, the Observation tower at Clingmans Dome offers a striking 360-degree view of fall leaves changing color from green to orange, yellow and red. The highest point in the Smoky Mountains, and the 3rd highest peak in North Carolina, Clingmans Dome is a perfect site to visit to see it all. Located off Newfound Gap Road (Highway 441), by a 7-mile access road near the Newfound Gap overlook, the tower requires a short, yet steep hike. The Appalachian Trail also comes through the area and is easily accessible as well.

Grandfather Mountain. While viewing fall’s changing landscape through a motor vehicle is pleasant, many may desire a more personal and hands-on experience. A short drive from Winston-Salem will offer this to all. Consider viewing fall’s vivid colors by walking over them on Grandfather Mountain’s “Mile High Swinging Bridge.” The Mile High Swinging Bridge, America’s highest suspension footbridge, was built to give visitors easy access to the breathtaking view from Grandfather Mountain’s Linville Peak. The 228-foot suspension bridge spans an 80-foot chasm with more than one mile in elevation. The bridge has been in place since 1952 and was originally built to give visitors easy access to the breathtaking view from Grandfather Mountain’s Linville Peak. Today, countless surveys depict how the journey to the other side of the mountain is always considered the highlight of a trip to Grandfather Mountain.

Why I Love Old TV Shows and Movies

Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong generation. I’m a millennial, but sometimes don’t feel as if I am a part of that age group. One of the reasons is that I love watching old T.V. shows and movies from the 1950s onward. I grew up watching reruns of I Love Lucy and Gomer Pyle, as well as, Doris Day movies and many, many others. To this day, I enjoy watching a favorite episode (or several) to bring me back to my childhood.

Nostalgia is one of the more important reasons I love this type of entertainment. It is the nostalgia of going back to my childhood and the nostalgia of going back in time. There is a sense of escaping everyday life and traveling through a digital time machine to another reality. There is nostalgia in the fact that these programs somewhat resemble the life that my grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. had, and helps me feel connected to them. I love learning about the early to mid-1900s. While there were difficulties, social issues, and injustices in that reality, sometimes these classic shows and movies don’t show those issues and reflect a more innocent time. By revisiting and viewing classic T.V. shows and movies, we are able to put our current world away for a moment and live in another time. This reality is one that is portrayed to be easier, simpler, with problems solved in a thirty to ninety minute timeframe. We are able to have a break from our normal lives and live in other worlds, such as I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched. There is a comfort in knowing that you can escape into the past for a little bit and then travel back to the present. And there is comfort in knowing that you can do this as much as you would like.

There is also a predictability in knowing the outcome of the episodes and movies. Today’s world is crazy, full of busyness, and stress. When a viewer already knows the ending, they are able to relax more and take in the moment, because we know everything is going to be okay in the end. Yes, Beaver may get into trouble, but he will always find his way out. Yes, Doris Day may have career troubles with romantic problems thrown in, but everything will be sunny again before the credits roll.

Counseling psychologist and the founder of Insight Alchemy, Ishina Choudhary, stated in an interview for the article “Here’s why watching the same TV shows and movies over and over again is so comforting” that “In stressful times, our brains and bodies desire comfort and one of the places we find comfort is in entertainment we have consumed previously...to put it simply, because you know the ending already, you also know how it will make you feel.” Lastly, part of the nostalgia and

familiarity is getting to know the characters of the T.V. shows and movies. Viewers are building a relationship with the characters and feel like they are experiencing life in the 1950s with them.

Another aspect of classic T.V. shows and movies that I love are the storylines. Some of the storylines are realistic, while others are not so much. A few episodes of shows have storylines that wouldn’t make sense today or are just plain funny because there is no possible way something like they would happen in reality. It seems as if the shows on air today have more of a message to them. They seem to be trying to prove a point or make a statement at times. However, when you watch a beloved episode of a T.V. show from 50 years ago, the plot may be telling you nothing at all, except to just sit back, watch, and enjoy.

Classic T.V. shows and movies will always hold a special place in my heart. It is what I grew up on and what I continue to watch today. My T.V. lineup does include current shows and movies, as well, but sometimes nothing can beat the storylines of the past.

The Winston-Salem Center for Education and the Arts

In the heart of Winston-Salem, a unique nonprofit organization stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. The Winston-Salem Center for Education and the Arts (WSCEA), under the leadership of its dedicated President, Cathy Owen, has been making a profound impact by providing rent-free space to four essential nonprofits: Leadership Winston-Salem (LWS), Winston-Salem Street School (WSSS), Dress for Success (DFS), and Authoring Action (A2). This article delves into the history, mission, and remarkable contributions of WSCEA and its partner nonprofits.

A BUILDING WITH A PURPOSE

The WSCEA’s story begins with the transformation of a former Employment Security Commission building located at 624 W. 6th St. A group of visionary individuals with a strong commitment to their community acquired the building, forming a 501(c)(3) organization named the Winston-Salem Center for Education and the Arts. Remarkably, WSCEA has thrived for 13 years without paid staff, relying on the guidance of a dedicated board of community volunteers.

A JOURNEY OF RENOVATION AND RESILIENCE

The journey of WSCEA involved an extensive renovation of the building, which officially commenced in April 2011. Thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers, significant savings of $50,000 were

realized by demolishing the interior of the building. Through a robust capital campaign that garnered support from corporations, foundations, and individuals, WSCEA successfully raised $475,000.

The first phase of renovation was completed in September 2012, with Winston-Salem Street School (WSSS) being the first nonprofit to find its new home in the building. Subsequently, Leadership Winston-Salem (LWS), Authoring Action (A2), and Dress for Success (DFS) joined the WSCEA family as part of Phase 2 in September 2014. The critical advantage for these nonprofits was the opportunity to operate rent-free, enabling them to redirect funds towards expanding their outreach programs.

COLLABORATION AND COLLECTIVE IMPACT

One of the defining features of WSCEA is the co-location of four nonprofits under one roof. This physical proximity has fostered collaboration and allowed them to leverage collective resources for greater efficiency. The nonprofits are not duplicating existing services but are instead enhancing the effectiveness of programs already enriching Winston-Salem.

SUPPORTING UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

Three of the four nonprofits supported by WSCEA—WSSS, A2, and DFS—primarily serve minority populations from underserved

demographics. Each organization contributes to the economic upliftment of its clients in unique ways.

Authoring Action (A2) annually serves 50-60 teenagers aged 13-18. Their mission revolves around creative writing, spoken word, visual and media arts, filmmaking, and leadership education, aiming to create positive systemic change in the lives of youth.

Dress for Success (DFS) serves over 400 women annually, empowering them to achieve economic independence from poverty. DFS provides a network of support, professional attire, and development tools to help women thrive in both work and life.

Winston-Salem Street School (WSSS) serves approximately 65 high school students each year who have faced challenges preventing them from succeeding in traditional high school settings. WSSS equips them with the skills and education needed to become productive members of the community, earning a recognized high school diploma from the State of North Carolina.

Leadership Winston-Salem (LWS) plays a crucial role in educating, connecting, and energizing local leaders to serve and improve the community. Their programs educate emerging and senior leaders about the community’s challenges and opportunities.

THE RETAINING WALL CAMPAIGN

Currently, WSCEA is embarking on a critical campaign to raise funds for the replacement of a retaining wall that borders part of their property. This retaining wall supports the elevated land upon which the building and adjacent paved/parking areas stand. Engineering reports have identified the serious deterioration of the wall, which is approaching the end of its useful life. Signs of distress include multiple large cracks, missing stones, and bulging, all of which pose a potential hazard to pedestrians.

The ramifications of not addressing this issue are significant. The loss of any portion of the retaining wall could undermine the building’s footings, rendering it unsuitable and unsafe

for occupancy. This would not only displace the tenants but also deprive them of the rent-free space that has been instrumental in their missions, causing financial hardships.

The current campaign aims to raise $250,000 to replace the retaining wall, covering a length of 194 linear feet ranging from 5 to 9 feet tall. Additionally, a $30,000 reserve is being set aside for future building repairs and improvements, ensuring the long-term sustainability of WSCEA and its invaluable support to the Winston-Salem community.

Cathy Owen and the Winston-Salem Center for Education and the Arts exemplify the transformative potential of community-driven initiatives. Through their commitment to providing rent-free space to vital nonprofits, WSCEA continues to be a beacon of hope, empowerment, and collaboration in Winston-Salem. As they embark on their retaining wall campaign, they invite the community to join hands in preserving this essential hub of support for years to come.

WSCEA is located at 624 West Sixth Street Winston Salem, NC 27101. For more information, contact us at info@wscea.org.

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Shereen Gomaa

Shereen Gomaa owns a local catering and ready-made meal company called Delicious. She is someone who gives her heart, soul, passion and talents each and every day. The restaurant and catering industry is known collectively as the ‘service industry.’ The nomenclature for this industry is profoundly exhibited with a raging loving force via the team at Delicious. And that dedicated team is populated with many from the local refugee community and their stories inspire and feed the collective soul with delectable middle eastern fare. Here is Shereen to tell her story.

FW: Tell us about your origin with cooking and feeding people.

SG: I was always in my grandmother’s kitchen when I was a child in Egypt. I was always watching the women in my family and learning everything I could from them. I grew up in a communal apartment complex where the residents shared a common area for raising chickens and growing produce. I can even remember clearly how inspired I was by the freshness of the ingredients and I remember the variety of spices used all through my childhood.

I always loved cooking, but my bachelor’s degree was in accounting. I knew in my heart, though, that I wanted to use my love of cooking as a way to assist people in need. Never did I ever dream of having my own catering company, but I knew I could do something that put my passion for food to use with the idea of being of service in a way that was meaningful.

FW: Tell us about the development of Delicious – your beloved non-profit catering and ready-made meal company.

SG: In 2017, I saw an increase in the number of refugees being resettled in the Triad and I wanted to help them in any way that I could because I understood just how difficult their situation was. They had to flee their homes and leave their entire way of life behind, coming to a new country with a new language and culture.

I started out before that just really cooking for family and friends for special occasions. People always told me I should have my own place. That I should definitely make my food for the public. And so, we started Delicious as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization in 2017. I knew first-hand that the local refugee and immigrant community had plenty of capable and talented women who wanted to provide for their families. Refugee women often have to be the primary supporters of their families. They need a way to make a difference and work hard and live with dignity. I wanted to make the transition easier for these women while helping them to see how valuable they truly are, being such talented breadwinners.

I never dreamed that I would operate a thriving business when I started, but I began to believe in what I could become especially during the pandemic. By being strong, and determined and staying the course through such a tough time, we saw what was possible for our team.

FW: What events or opportunities have provided the best moments for Delicious?

SG: An example would be the meals we have prepared and donated for organizations such as the Bethesda Shelter and many other nonprofit organizations. We even were the featured caterer for a huge gala for World Relief Triad for over 300 people! That night, we presented the entire staff and showcased their stories to the attendees there. We heard endless comments and praise that evening. Many attendees knew of our story and history and said they attended the gala primarily because they knew we would be there with the food. We have gained many repeat customers from these wonderful events.

FW: What does the future hold for Delicious?

SG: A small counter, take-out restaurant. I would love to open a small simple place that features our amazing food and makes it easy for everyone to enjoy what we do. I can envision not just the women who are on my team now, but also their family members. It would continue to be a community that supports each other and does amazing things together. And we have such unique, fantastic desserts made from scratch – I could envision a time when we are shipping those desserts to customers anywhere!

FW: What do you want the readership to know about Delicious?

SG: That we would love to connect with larger corporate clientele to become their go-to choice for catering and meal options. We are certain that once someone tries us, they are customers for life. We want the public to know that, truly, our secret ingredient is love. We always say that we are unique, and we offer food with a purpose. By coming to us, people are enjoying unforgettable food while also being a part of an amazing cause helping the local immigrant and refugee communities.

FW: Who would you like to nominate for our next People of Prominence installment?

SG: Dr. Alessandra Von Burg. Alessandra is a Professor at Wake Forest University and an amazing human who supports refugees and immigrants, and is a founder of Every Campus a Refuge at Wake Forest University. She has been amazingly supportive of our mission and deserves to be highlighted for her tireless work supporting underrepresented communities in our area. THE DYNAMIC EVOLUTION OF LANGUAGE

From Pronouns to Emojis

Language, as a living and dynamic entity, evolves alongside society, culture, and technological advancements. Over the years, numerous changes have occurred in grammar rules and linguistic trends, shaping the way we communicate and express ourselves. This article will explore some key transformations that language has undergone, shedding light on how these shifts have influenced our daily interactions and written communication.

EVOLUTION OF GRAMMAR RULES

PRONOUN USAGE

One of the most significant changes in the English language has been the evolution of pronoun usage. In the past, the generic “he” was commonly used to represent both genders. However, this practice has evolved in response to a growing awareness of gender diversity and the push for gender-neutral language. As a result, alternatives like “he or she,” “they,” or “their” have gained prominence, making our language more inclusive and reflective of a changing society.

SINGULAR “THEY”

Historically, using the singular “they” to refer to an individual with an unknown or non-binary gender was considered ungrammatical. However, language is adaptable, and societal progress has led to the acceptance and widespread use of this construction. This shift demonstrates the language’s ability to accommodate changing attitudes towards gender identity, reflecting a more inclusive and respectful approach to communication.

90 | ForsythWoman.com

SENTENCE STRUCTURE

The structure of sentences in English has also evolved over time. Older English favored rigid sentence structures, but modern English has embraced flexibility and variety. Shorter sentences and liberal use of conjunctions and contraction have become more common, mirroring the influence of conversational speech on written communication. This shift allows for more natural and accessible language use.

INFLUENCE OF TECHNOLOGY

The advent of technology, particularly text messaging and social media platforms, has revolutionized how we communicate. Abbreviations and acronyms like “LOL” (Laugh Out Loud), “BRB” (Be Right Back), and “OMG” (Oh My God) have become prevalent in our everyday conversations. These shortcuts, while efficient, have also sparked debates about the impact of technology-driven language on our written communication.

EMOJIS

Emojis have emerged as a crucial element of digital communication. These tiny pictographs transcend language barriers and add emotional nuance to our written expressions. In 2015, the Oxford English Dictionary even incorporated emojis into its lexicon, recognizing their legitimacy as linguistic tools. Emojis have become an integral part of our language, allowing us to convey feelings and context in ways that text alone cannot achieve.

LOANWORDS AND LOAN PHRASES

Globalization has accelerated the process of language borrowing. English, in particular, has a knack for assimilating foreign words and phrases into its vocabulary. Words like “sushi” (Japanese), “croissant”

(French), and “bungalow” (Hindi) are seamlessly integrated into English, enriching its lexicon and reflecting the interconnectedness of the modern world. This phenomenon demonstrates how language adapts and evolves to embrace diverse influences.

SLANG EVOLUTION

Informal language, such as slang, undergoes rapid evolution, largely influenced by youth culture and pop culture references. Terms that were popular just a few years ago may quickly become outdated, making it challenging for older generations to keep up with the latest linguistic trends. Slang reflects the dynamic nature of language and the way it responds to cultural shifts.

INTERNET MEMES

The internet has given rise to viral memes that often involve creative linguistic twists. These memes can have a significant impact on language trends, popularizing new phrases or slang globally within a short period. Memes demonstrate how language evolves not only through traditional channels but also through digital culture and humor, which can spread linguistic innovations at an astonishing pace.

Language is a living entity, continuously evolving to adapt to societal changes, technological advancements, and cultural influences. As demonstrated by the shifts in grammar rules, the influence of technology, the borrowing of words from other languages, and the evolution of slang, language is a dynamic tool that reflects the complexities of human interaction. Embracing these changes fosters better communication and understanding in an ever-changing world, ultimately highlighting the beauty and resilience of language as it continues to evolve over time. So, the next time you send an emoji or use a newly coined slang term, remember that you are contributing to the ongoing evolution of language, a process that ensures its relevance and vitality in the modern world.

Halloween can be one of the most fun and festive times of the year for some people. It is the time to get a new costume, eat as much candy as possible and fill your home with ghoulish decorations. Then, add in trick-or-treating, parties and pumpkin carving, Halloween is a spooktacular time. However, there is also a downside to the holiday.

October 31st isn’t the friendliest in terms of sustainability and being environmentally conscious. There are newly bought costumes and decorations, candy wrappers and plastic cups, plates and other materials. Together, these items create tons of waste that is put into landfills, causing environmental impacts. These spine-chilling realizations can be fixed. There are many ways for Halloween to be a sustainable and environmentally friendly holiday, including these tips:

Reuse as much as possible when it comes to decorations and costumes. Household items can easily be turned into creepy creations. For example, cardboard boxes can be made into tombstones and Jack-o-lanterns. Netting from bags of oranges, leaves and branches from the yard, toilet paper rolls, tin cans, plastic bags and laundry baskets are great materials to use. One easy idea is using a hula hoop, black string and paint to create an eerie spider web. As always, don’t buy new decorations each year. If you want something new from a store, see if you can’t make it from the materials you already have at home.

As for costumes, make your own, as well, or borrow from family and friends. Cut old clothes, sheets, etc. into outfits. Glue craft supplies to old sheets, paint the costume the color of your choosing; there are numerous materials you can use to build your outfit with just a little creativity. If you do need to get a new item, visit a rental shop, thrift store, consignment store or Facebook marketplace before shopping at a big-box store. Also, don’t be afraid to break down old costumes and use various pieces to form new ones. Let your and your kids’ imaginations run wild, and you never know what you may design.

Ways to Be More Eco-Friendly this

Trick-or-treat bags are another Halloween mainstay that can be homemade or used year after year. Maybe your child’s trick-or-treat bag is a plastic pumpkin that is several years old. Pillowcases, buckets, canvas bags or upcycled paint cans make great options. Another twist is to sew pieces of fabric together in a fun, Halloween shape. A favorite among many people is to make a duct tape bag. Duct tape is a multi-purposed object. It can be transformed into hundreds of items – I have seen wallets, shoes, bookmarks and more. To make a duct tape trick-or-treat bag, all you need to do is choose two rolls of tape to use. First, lay strips of one roll facedown, side by side on a flat surface. Then, lay the other pattern, design side up, across the other pieces. Once you have a large rectangle, trim the edges and fold in half. Using additional pieces of duct tape, seal the side edges. You will need to push the corners to the inside of the bag. Also, add duct tape across the inside corners of the bag. Finally, place one strip of duct tape around the top of the bag and cut four pieces of duct tape to make the handles. Place two strips of tape back to back and then attach to the inside of the bag in an upside-down U shape for the handles.

Carving pumpkins into Jack-o-lanterns is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. However, it is a tradition that can create some problems after the holiday is finished. First, buy your pumpkin from a local farmer or farmer’s market. Your pumpkin will more than likely be fresher and riper than purchasing it at a grocery store. Plus, you will be helping local business owners. Once October 31st ends, don’t throw away your Jack-o-lantern. Instead, remove all the seeds and compost it. You can also reuse it as food for local wildlife, feed the seeds to birds or roast them for yourself.

While Halloween is a mysterious, ghostly and lively night, it can have some negative impacts on our world. By utilizing these three tips, October 31st can become an eco-friendly, and still creepy, fun night.

Conversations with Your BFF

We all have those ‘Woe is me’ days, when it really feels like the world is against us, everyone is out to get us, and no matter what we do, nothing goes right. I have found throughout life that it is possible to get stuck in the victim mindset when every day is worse than the last. Once you go from ‘Woe is me’ days, to ‘Woe is me’ weeks and months, getting out of it is hard. So ‘How can I stop being a victim in life?’ I am so glad you asked!

RECOGNIZE YOU ARE LIVING AS A MARTYR

With any habit or rut you get stuck in, the first step to finding your way out is admitting you have a problem. Much like the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 Steps, stopping being a victim begins with recognizing you have a martyr side that is taking over. Pay attention to the damage the mindset of martyrdom is causing, how bad you feel, and really see the destruction it may be causing to the relationships you hold dear.

FORGIVING OTHERS BRINGS PEACE

My therapist once told me, ‘Resentment is like drinking poison and expecting your enemy to die.’ I found that pretty darn profound; I later read it in a book, so although it wasn’t an original thought by my therapist, it is still a good saying to live by. The only one being hurt by the hate and anger we feel toward others is us. When you hold grudges toward others, your joy and success in life is diminished.

FORGIVE YOURSELF ALONG WITH OTHERS

Unfortunately, we tend to accept the labels others put on us and start acting the part. If a child is told, ‘You’re never going to amount to anything,’ they will probably achieve nothing, or go out of their way to amount to nothing. Letting go of the labels we’ve had placed on us is hard, but it can change your life and its direction. By forgiving yourself, you remove the limited thinking that a label has placed on you and, instead, set a new path that has positive outcomes.

MEDITATION AND PRAYER GO A LONG WAY

Studies have shown that feeling like a terminal victim is fueled many times by fear. If things did go right, how would I react? I know how to deal with misery, but happiness is something I have no clue how to deal with. Some people find peace and connection in meditation, but personally, I get clarity and direction through prayer and spending time with God, seeking

How Can I Stop Being a Victim in Life?

His will and direction for my life. When you feel you are not alone and that every step forward or step back has a purpose, you will begin retaking control of your life.

REIN IN YOUR MOOD

It may sound simplistic, but when you feel good, you do good; when you feel down on yourself and feel bad, you do bad. I try to begin and end each day with gratitude. Often we get so caught up in ‘asking’ for things that we forget to ‘be thankful’ for what we do have. Prayer is a great way to not only connect to something bigger than yourself, but to focus on the many blessings in your life. I have also found that helping others helps you to see past your limited view of all the ‘wrongs’ in your life. Knowing that you have the power to step up and help someone else during their trying times is so very rewarding.

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU REPEAT TO YOURSELF

Just like in the beginning of this discussion, the things we say to ourselves make a difference, whether you are 7 years old or 107. Try telling yourself ‘I am not a victim of my past and my future and my life is what I choose it to be from this minute right now!’ The only thing worse than being a victim for 5 years, is being a victim for 5 years and one day!

PUT ACTION BEHIND YOUR THOUGHTS

You can repeat a positive mantra to yourself all day, but without action, you will never see the fruits of changing your life. The results of your life are a product of the thoughts you think, the decisions you make, and the actions taken to make those decisions a reality. By taking these steps, you take control over your present and future, taking the chance to be a victim out of the equation and making your life the one you want!
