This month we’re featuring the owner of Carolina Vintiques on our cover! Shelle is one awesome lady and she’s curated a store that is well worth the visit. In fact, Carolina Vintiques recently won an award for the best antique store in Clemmons! I’ve come to really enjoy antiques and thrifting recently. My home is over 100 years old and I love mixing antiques with a touch of modern. And shopping at local antique shops is another way to support local businesses! You can read all about Carolina Vintiques on page 48!

Speaking of shopping local, we had a fabulous Tour de Boutique event this past month and our shoppers were introduced to several new local stores, just in time for the holidays. We are already thinking about some exciting ideas for next year, so if you haven’t been on a tour before, please join us - it’s a truly win-win situation for shoppers and local businesses. We’re thrilled to have an absolutely wonderful line up of Girls’ Night Out events coming up! Keeping It Real COVERING THE FAULT LINES by D R . D E B B I E L A N I E R

As long as we live and breathe, conflict, even with those we love, is inescapable. We misinterpret each other’s words, motives, or actions, OR we hear them loud and clear! We simply view situations from two VERY different perspectives. It happens. But amid these inevitabilities, how should the mature one in God respond? We must make amends where possible, so the enemy cannot divide us relationally. More importantly, we must protect ourselves from the rift within that shatters the sanctity of our soul! God is schooling me on the difference between forgiveness and forbearance. The mature heart must discern the distinction, then toss the score card! Forgiveness is when we see the fault lines, and we shore them up by either asking for forgiveness or extending it. This grace heals us and moves us forward. Lingering unforgiveness inevitably destroys us from the inside out, NO MATTER who’s right! (Get that!) But what do we do when the pain is screaming, and the person at fault is oblivious or just downright obstinate? If we’re not careful, the wound will bleed into every thought until it consumes us. Before long, this colors our words and actions, too. That’s where forbearance comes in. “Love bears all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:7) We “forbear” or “endure” with one another. We cover the unfixed relationship with an endurance only God can give. (Stay with me!) “Love covers a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8) That doesn’t mean we become a doormat or gloss over the wrongs done. Such a view distorts grace instead of walking in its power. The grace God gives to forbear or endure doesn’t ignore or deny the mistreatment. It simply sets us in a place in God where we can say “love never fails” …in me! No matter the chasms between this person and me now, God’s love in me covers the gaps just as He has covered my own shortcomings with Himself. I know, I know. You’re probably thinking that the disagreement stretches too far. Trying to forgive or forbear feels contrived. This rift is NOT resolved. I hear you! But stop waiting on the other party to act. It’s not even about them any longer. It’s about YOU and the sanctity of your own soul. God covered the gaping hole between you and Him. Now He empowers you to cover the broken places in this situation. His love at work in you fastens the fault lines together because His love never fails . . . in you!

“But what about the wrong inflicted? What about the mistreatment leveled against me?” Remember, I’m talking to mature ones! Get your eyes off that person and become fixed on God’s unfailing love toward you. You’re not trying to prove your point. You are proving God’s love is alive and well IN YOU! Rushing waters cannot squelch that kind of love and floods cannot drown it. God is not asking you to become chums again. He is requiring of you a love that takes the high road and fills the chasm. It’s the only way to experience freedom from this situation. Otherwise, this offense becomes a stronghold that strangles the life blood out of you! Ditch the offense, friend. Stop letting it preoccupy your thoughts. Choose to love anyway! Consider God’s extravagant love toward you that poured over your broken pieces when He owed you NOTHING! From that place, you can walk through the rubble on your way to climbing higher! “Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen.” (1 Corinthians 13:7-8a PHILLIPS)

November 13th 2023 “World Kindness Day is an international holiday first introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. The holiday is devoted to promoting kindness throughout the world, understanding the positive potential of large and small acts of kindness, and unifying together as human beings.” by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N

“Kindness is contagious.” One of our local healthcare providers has embraced this statement, repeating it in their clinic signage, their customer service support line and other media. I don’t know about you, but I like it. A lot. First of all, it is scientifically true. Kindness spreads between and among us. Second, what better way to counter rudeness or hate? With World Kindness Day on November 13th, we are reminded of the part we each play in the larger scheme of things. Take a couple of minutes to consider how you can personally cultivate the kindness contagion. Start inside and work outwards:

SELF

Let go of that negative self-talk. There is no kindness there! Be rigorous about monitoring it, and using self-talk such as “I am doing the best I can right now” to send kindness inward. Do something just for you, every single day. A dried branch from my nearly-asleep garden graces my windowsill – that’s something I did “for me.” Maybe it’s 10 minutes of inspirational reading or stretching in the morning. Maybe it’s buying that overpriced body lotion that you love so much. You decide. Remember that the person responsible for your well-being and happiness is you. Go through your day with that truth as your guide. Live, be, and make your decisions accordingly. Extend one random act of kindness every single day. When you do, you will begin to experience what a powerful force you can be:

FAMILY AND FRIENDS Be mindful and put your love into action. Sometimes, the people we care about the most get the worst of us. You know what I mean. Be conscious of how your words, manner, or lack of attention may be sending an unintended, less-than-kind message. Say “I’m sorry, Sweetie. I wasn’t listening.” Or, “I know that matters to you, I get it.” Simple, thoughtful, kind words go a long way to reinforcing our love and commitment. Be there emotionally. Everyone has bad days and goes through rough patches from time to time. More than money, gifts, or distractions, it’s love, compassion, and encouragement that matter most. Surprise a friend. Leave a plant or something homemade on a friend’s doorstep or send a small “just because” gift to a long distance friend. And for your children? Be a “do as I do” parent, a role model of kindness.

COMMUNITY

Respect shared space. Pick up stray pieces of trash when you see them. Take up one parking space, no more. Put the shopping cart back where it belongs. It’s the little things, right? Surprise a neighbor. Take in a neighbor’s trash barrels or offer to run an errand. Leave a magazine or something in their mailbox because, why not? And on that note, make a contribution to those “bring something, take something” boxes people place on their front lawns. I always feel so good when I do! Buy local, please! Our small businesses need our encouragement, our referrals, and our dollars. Not to mention the camaraderie and friendship we develop when we become regulars. Not everything has to be bought online or at a big box store.

Let that lady go ahead of you in line

Smile with understanding at the frazzled young dad trying to quiet his child

Hold the door open

Leave generously positive online reviews. Your kind words supply ongoing encouragement while helping businesses gain, retain, and build their customer base.

Extend genuine and generous compliments to cashiers, receptionists, anyone who plays a role in serving and servicing you.

Kindness begins with you - with what you send inward, nurture, then send outward. And what’s better than living kindness on November 13th? Sending ripples of kindness into the world 365 days a year.

Southern Buttermilk Biscuits with Hot Honey Whipped Butter and Peach Compote DIRECTIONS

For the Peach Compote: 1. Drain the peaches, saving the peach juice for other uses like drink recipes. Place the drained peaches in a saucepan over medium high heat. 2. Stir in the honey, lemon juice, and ground cinnamon. 3. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 8-10 minutes. 4. Let the peaches cool to room temperature before transferring to a food processor to blend until smooth. 5. Store in a glass jar in the fridge for up to 4 days. For the Hot Honey Whipped Butter: 1. Using a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, add the softened butter and honey. Whip for 5 minutes.

Servings: 8 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes

2. Add hot sauce and sea salt to taste, then whip on HIGH speed another 4-5 minutes, until light and fluffy. For the Buttermilk Biscuits: 1. Freeze the stick of butter for 10 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

2. Preheat the oven to 450F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

For the Peach Compote: 2 15-oz. Canned Peaches 3 tbsp. Honey, or Maple Syrup Juice of 1 Lemon, or 1 tbsp. Juice from the Can 1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon

3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.

For the Hot Honey Whipped Butter: 1 stick Unsalted Butter, room temperature, cut into pieces 4 tbsp. Honey 1 tbsp. Hot Sauce, or to taste Pinch of Sea Salt For the Buttermilk Biscuits: 2 cups All Purpose Flour 1 ½ tbsp. Baking Powder 1 tsp. Salt ½ cup (8 tbsp.) Unsalted Butter, cold 3/4 cup Buttermilk

20 | ForsythWoman.com

4. Using a box grater, grate the cold butter into the flour mixture. Mix with a fork or your fingers until crumb-like texture. But be careful not to overwork the dough – you want the butter to stay cold! 5. Add the cold buttermilk and mix just until combined. 6. Transfer the dough out on a clean floured surface. 7. Pat out into a large rectangle, then slice the dough into 3 equal pieces. Stack the pieces on top of each other and pat or roll out to 1” thick. 8. Use a 2 ½ - 3” cookie cutter to press firmly down into the dough. Do not twist! Twisting will make the biscuits lose their appearance of flaky edges. 9. Place the biscuits on the prepared pan. 10. Brush with butter or an egg wash. 11. Bake for 10-13 minutes, until golden on top. 12. Enjoy warm with the Hot Honey Whipped Butter and Peach Compote!

5 Ways to Show Your Support by TA R Y N J E R E Z

This is a great year to show up big for small businesses! Continuing to survive the economic impact of the last few years of coming out of a global pandemic, Small Business Saturday gives a beautiful reminder that these businesses are still here serving their communities and are worthy of support. This year, November 25th will be the 13th anniversary of American Express first founding Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and communities across the country. Let’s dive into five different ways you can show up to support small businesses this year and make a difference!

#1 SUPPORT WITH YOUR MONEY BY SPENDING IN-STORE AND ONLINE Whether you are all set to put your walking shoes on to hit the streets or have that “add to cart” trigger finger ready, every dollar you spend with a small business this holiday season will make a larger impact than you might realize. Small Business Saturday is famous for business owners using their creativity to make the day feel extra special by implementing activities and offering promotions and giveaways instore and online. If you’ll be shopping in-person, make a whole day of it! On November 25th, start your Saturday off with a trip to your favorite local coffeehouse, enjoy some great shopping, and order from a mom and pop restaurant for each meal! Deciding to stick to e-commerce? Check out some new websites you’ve been wanting to explore. Remember, many small businesses who hadn’t offered online shopping before made the switch during this pandemic!

#3 SUPPORT WITH YOUR HEART BY CHOOSING DIVERSE BUSINESSES As the world continues to work through and recover from the pandemic, minority-owned businesses have been hit hard and disproportionately affected. Your spending power has the opportunity to increase sales, spread awareness, and give support to businesses that need and value it most. As you put together your shopping list compiling all your wants and needs for Small Business Saturday, take a little time to research the businesses in your community and online before you shop. American Express has even added resources to their ‘shop small’ webpage to provide resources for shoppers looking to support black-owned businesses this year! Make a conscious decision to show up and support minority and LGBTQ businesses that may not otherwise have been on your radar this year and find some awesome new favorite shops, restaurants, service providers, and more!

#4 SUPPORT WITH YOUR OPINION BY PROVIDING REFERRALS AND REVIEWS A positive review means the world to a small business and is their way of showing potential customers what it’s really like to work with them or purchase from them. When you share your opinion about an interaction with local and small brands, there are so many benefits that can turn a random person into a customer. Reviews and referrals help point people to new businesses, build trust in them, and offer confidence in their purchasing decisions. You don’t have to wait until Small Business Saturday to leave a review for one of your favorite businesses! Take a few minutes today to proudly proclaim the great experience you had with them on their social media page, website, Google, or even Yelp if applicable. It will mean the world to them!

#2 SUPPORT WITH YOUR VOICE BY SHOWING UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA

#5 SUPPORT WITH YOUR RESOURCES BY CREATING PARTNERSHIPS

Did you know that word-of-mouth marketing is one of the best ways for a small business to grow? Social media helps take that word of mouth and spread it like wildfire to your friends and family. Take time to share the link to a favorite small business or repost the sale you saw their website hosting. Don’t forget when you share photos of your purchases or shopping festivities to tag the small businesses you helped support so more people can learn about them. If you had a truly great experience, you can like their Facebook page or follow them on Instagram to make sure you see what else they have to offer throughout the year. It may seem silly to some, but social media makes a huge difference for small businesses, especially as a way of free marketing!

Did you know that small businesses are owned and operated by moms and dads, teachers, kids, church members, and just about anyone else in your community that you can think of? (You did, of course, but it’s always a good reminder!) Get to know the people behind your favorite small business and learn what their needs are and how you may be able to help one another. As Small Business Saturday approaches, think about the people in your life or those you are closely connected to that own a business. Are there ways you can partner with them that may be mutually beneficial? Maybe you can create a fundraiser or curate a collaboration between your own place of work and their business?

by S H E R I D A N C . W AT K I N S

Did you know the opposite of peace is not chaos, but fear? When we aren’t sure about certain things in our lives, whether big or small, it can cause us to stress over the future, which disrupts our peace. Have you ever tried to complete a workrelated task in the middle of family or friend drama? If you consider yourself an empath, it’s difficult to focus because your mind is not in the present. It’s either in the past, thinking about things you could’ve done differently, or in the future, pondering ways to reach a desired outcome. Proverb 29:25 tells us trusting God with our problems is the best way to remain peaceful because He will keep us safe. Falling into fear will keep us trapped and cause us to lean on our own understanding, which is the exact opposite of Scripture (Proverbs 3:5). Fear creates a trickle-down effect that prevents us from growing our businesses and achieving a well-balanced life filled with love, healthy relationships, and success. When you choose peace, you are embracing the unknown and moving forward in the best way you know how and believing God has your back. Entrepreneurship involves risk, but if you invite God to be a part of your journey you aren’t by yourself. You have the advantage of knowing someone who can see the beginning and the end and will give you direction for each day. Things may never come to pass on any deadline you set but if God gave you the vision, rest assured it’s happening! All you are required to do is focus on what you’re given as you take on each day. Time moves pretty fast when you’re working in purpose and God’s plan will gradually unveil with time, giving you more peace and direction. You can also invite peace into your life with routines and boundaries. How are you preparing yourself for the day? As a child of God, you must do more than wake up and get to work. Don’t make yourself vulnerable to enemy attacks by neglecting time for Bible study, prayer, worship, and self-care. You

24 | ForsythWoman.com

need daily practices that build your spiritual bank so you have the capacity and capability to positively compartmentalize and make Godly decisions. You also need the strength to stick to your boundaries, even if it’s as simple as telling relatives who usually call with drama to wait until the end of your workday so you can pour focus into different areas effectively. Get comfortable with uncomfortable moments

as you make your boundaries clear -- they will be alright! This is about your peace. Shifting your mindset to welcome peace does not grant an absence of challenges but gives you the wisdom to give it all to Him and keep moving to fulfill your mission on Earth. Keep Philippians 4:7 in your heart as you continue with your day and at all costs, protect your peace. I have faith in you.

EMPOWERING NEUROPATHY PATIENTS BACK TO FULL LIVES by M A R T I E E M O R Y Husband and wife duo Drs. Jessica and Joshua Katz have made their practice — Aligned Health & Wellness — a reflection of their dedication to patient care that educates and supports the entire community. With their newest location in Winston-Salem, they’ve been able to broaden their scope of care, treating peripheral neuropathy with new techniques that are allowing patients to resume productive, active lives with their families. Their work is geared towards empowering people to reclaim their lives, despite the presence of neuropathy. If you’re all too familiar with the symptoms of neuropathy, it’s likely you’ve put hobbies and physical activities on hold — everything from gardening in the back yard to enjoying nature walks with children or grandchildren. “We know eliminating pain is the first step to getting patients back to their old lives,” says Dr. Jessica. “Our goal is for them to heal without surgery or the introduction of harmful medications.” Grateful Winston-Salem resident Gale Fox has experienced firsthand the positive effects of neuropathy treatment at Aligned Health & Wellness, and is incredibly glad she was introduced to Dr. Jessica. Gale registered for one of the many lunchand-learn opportunities Aligned Health & Wellness provides for the community.

Gale is pleased to report that her A1C is down and her primary care physician took her off metformin!

Even after her next visit, Gale will still receive lifetime care from Aligned Health & Wellness, and can call any time with questions or concerns. Attending that luncheon and getting to know the team at Aligned Health & Wellness has been life-changing for the very personable Gale, who describes Dr. Jessica as “absolutely wonderful.” “She is so full of life,” Gale adds. “I love that she is so open with me, and answers any and all of my questions.” If you are noticing any of the following symptoms, you may be experiencing peripheral neuropathy — and you’ve already seen its effects on your everyday life: * Numbness, tingling, burning, or itching in the extremities

“At the time, I had very little feeling in my feet, experienced problems with balance, and foot cramping at night,” explains the 81-year-old, who had also dealt with Type 2 diabetes for the last 10 years, along with arthritis in her knees. “I knew it would be a process — after all, I didn’t get neuropathy overnight, so I knew healing wouldn’t happen overnight.”

* Dizziness while standing or while moving from sitting to standing

After being accessed by Dr. Jessica and discussing treatment recommendations, Gale began her journey with Aligned.

* Hot or cold hands and feet, or changes in skin color

With great enthusiasm, Gale says she hopes after the next 90 days when she returns to see Dr. Jessica, she’ll be able to leave her cane at home! “I have feeling in my feet again, the nightly foot cramping stopped after one month, there is less swelling, and I’m finally able to walk a little in my kitchen without my cane,” she says. A true personal treat for Gale — she can also walk barefoot now safely, because she can actually feel what’s beneath her feet!

The ENNEAGRAM Heart/Feeling Types by L E S L I E S P E A S

Last month, an article was shared introducing the Enneagram – a tool to improve self-awareness and understanding of others. The Enneagram is a study of the nine basic types of personality. It explains why we behave the way we do and points to specific directions for

TYPE TWO – THE HELPER (AKA THE GIVER)

Their mantra is “to help others.” Twos are empathetic, warm, caring and generous. They are motivated by the need to be loved and valued – and to express positive feelings toward others. SUPERPOWER – Emotional attunement CORE FEAR – Of being unwanted, not being loved CORE DESIRE – Want to be loved, needed and appreciated TWOS AT THEIR BEST • Loving • Caring • Nurturing • Good communicators • Approachable • Excellent team players • Generous • Empathetic • Intuitive TWOS AT THEIR WORST • Manipulative • Trouble saying no • People-pleasing • Overly accommodating • Don’t attend to their own needs • May get angry if they aren’t feeling valued • Prideful when they do good for others • Martyrlike at times DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES • Take care of yourself – First and foremost, remember that if you are not addressing your own needs, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to meet anyone else’s needs without problems, underlying resentments, and continual frustrations. • Be conscious of your motives when you decide to help someone – While doing good things for people is certainly an admirable trait when you do it because you expect the other person to appreciate you or reciprocate, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. • Work on saying no – Work on saying no to things that don’t fit in with your values or priorities.

growth. In this article, we will explore the heart/feeling types – Twos, Threes and Fours. This means that these types relate to the outside world through their feelings. Below we will explore each of these types in more detail.

TYPE THREE – THE ACHIEVER (AKA THE PERFORMER)

TYPE FOUR – THE INDIVIDUALIST (AKA THE ROMANTIC)

THREES AT THEIR BEST • Wired for productivity • Optimistic • Confident • Competent • Goal-oriented • Charming • Love checking things off • Motivating

FOURS AT THIS BEST • Creative • Compassionate • Introspective • Intuitive • Supportive • Unique • Passionate about self-expression

Their mantra is “to achieve and succeed.” Threes are self-assured, action-oriented, charming, ambitious, competent, and energetic. They want to be productive, achieve success and avoid failure. SUPERPOWER – Productivity CORE FEAR – Not being valued/admired CORE DESIRE – To succeed, appear successful, avoid failure

THREES AT THEIR WORST • Overly focused on image/status • Feel they are what they do • Self-promoting • Vain • Impatient if slowed down on goals • Shape shifters • Overly competitive • Workaholics DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES • Be authentic – You will impress people more deeply by being authentic than by bragging about your successes or exaggerating your accomplishments. • Recognize that you are more than what you do • Practice mindfulness – This can include deep breathing exercises, meditation or prayer.

Fours have a need to express individuality. They are creative, authentic and intuitive. Fours are motivated by the need to experience their feelings, to be understood, and to be unique. SUPERPOWER – To touch and move people through their creativity CORE FEAR – Having no significance or meaning CORE DESIRE – To be special and unique

FOURS AT THEIR WORST • Negative self-image • Self-conscious • Moody • Self-absorbed • Feel fundamentally disadvantaged/ focus on what they do not have • Envious • Dramatic • Have trouble letting go of feelings DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES • Practice gratitude – Reflecting on the positive aspects of life can be helpful for Fours since you tend to focus on what you don’t have. • Find an outlet for your creativity – Art, writing, poetry, dance, or whatever creative outlet works for you. • Practice positive self-talk – Practice replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Do any of these types sound like you? Stay tuned to learn about the Thinking Types next month!

EMPOWERING WOMEN One Scholarship at a Time by D E B B I E L I N V I L L E

TWC MISSION Triad Women’s Club (TWC) is an evolution of the former Professional Women of Winston-Salem (PWWS), which has been in existence since 1990. TWC’s vision is to build an inclusive circle of diverse women in all stages of their lives and careers from across the Piedmont Triad. Whether a woman has retired from a phenomenal career, temporarily stepped aside from the workplace to stay at home, planning to go back to school to make a career change, or is at the height of her professional journey, Triad Women’s Club offers a space to cultivate and nourish authentic relationships.

TWC MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS TWC offers many opportunities for members to grow and build valuable relationships. As Jobana Semones (Marketing Committee) shares, “Quarterly luncheon speaker series, Breakfast Club, SWAP (Socials with a Purpose), and other happenings throughout the year provide women a chance to gather for camaraderie, sips, nibbles, and meaningful connections.” By offering many and varied events and meeting times, TWC is able to reach more women and give them the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and supportive community. Standard ($55/year) and premiere ($100) memberships are available with benefits galore! To learn more about how you can be part of TWC, please visit www.triadwomensclub.org/membership.

TWC SCHOLARSHIP FUND •

History In 2000, PWWS established a scholarship program to help single mothers in Forsyth County complete their education while juggling the demands of family, work, and school, all while demonstrating a strong commitment to their academic studies. From the beginning, the organization has been known for its philanthropic work toward economically empowering women. Corporate sponsorships were relied upon to make these annual scholarships possible (up to $2000 each) and fulfill the promise of PWWS to promote, support, and honor women through professional and personal growth and development opportunities. Evolution Over the years, the Scholarship Fund has enabled women to transform the cyclical nature of poverty into a cycle of prosperity. Under TWC, the program expanded its reach beyond Forsyth County to encompass women in the Triad. To date, scholarships have been awarded to dozens of employed, single mothers attending school in the Triad, improving their financial security and well-being for themselves and their families. TWC has heard over and over again that the scholarships made a significant difference in being able to afford their classes and, ultimately, complete their degree.

Being a young mother, in college, and during the pandemic was one of the toughest moments of my life. Receiving this scholarship and not having to worry financially about paying for college gave me such peace of mind. I am currently employed in Ocular Plastic Surgery and working towards getting my certification in Ophthalmic Billing and Coding. -Briana Coad, TWC Scholarship Recipient

30 | ForsythWoman.com

Future In addition to AA and BA/BS degrees, TWC will accept scholarship applications from women seeking vocational training degrees beginning in fall, 2023. As Margaret Weir (Scholarship Program Chair) states, “Vocational schools offer women a more expeditious, affordable path towards well-paying and stable careers with immediate earnings.” Whatever professional path a woman chooses, the TWC scholarship program helps provide tuition and books for one semester/quarter at an accredited institution. The next scholarship(s) will be awarded in January 2024. Students may apply for more than one semester or quarter; however, a new application packet must be completed each time. For scholarship application information, please go to https://www.triadwomensclub.org/scholarship.

WHY IS THE TWC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM SO IMPORTANT? Research suggests that single mothers in North Carolina who graduate with an AA degree are 44 percent, and with a BA/BS degree are 71 percent, less likely to live in poverty than a high school graduate. With an AA degree, single mothers earn nearly $7,000 annually more than a single mother with only a high school education. Similarly, single mothers with a bachelor’s degree earn nearly $20,000 more annually. And, just one year of vocational school education can increase a woman’s lifetime earnings by up to 20 percent. It is clear...single mothers with advanced education can better provide for their families, make substantial economic contributions to the economy, and use fewer public benefits.

HOW CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT THE TWC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM? As a non-profit organization, TWC encourages and strongly relies upon businesses, organizations, and individuals to help support this 20+ year program in making a difference for individual women and the community at large. Presently, the maximum scholarship awarded is $2000, but the goal is to award scholarships to as many viable candidates as possible. Sponsors interested in learning more about how they can help may email triadwomensclub@gmail.com or simply click the DONATE button on the TWC website: www.triadwomensclub.org. Donations for the Scholarship Program are welcomed throughout the year. Arbor Investment Advisors is honored to support the Scholarship Program as a founding sponsor of TWC. The stories of the women that the Scholarship Program has touched are awe inspiring and the impact these women are having on their families and our community is exponential. We are honored to have the opportunity to play the smallest of roles in this big, big story. -Erika L. A Reliable Partner When You’re on the Move by R O B I N S H U P E K E L L E R & M A R T I E E M O R Y, photos by J O D I E B R I M C R E AT I V E “Do you really have time to move yourself?” That’s the burning question American Moving & Hauling of Winston-Salem asks on their website. A locally known North Carolina moving and hauling company offering a comprehensive range of services to assist individuals, families, and businesses with their relocation needs, this business is known for its commitment to providing reliable, efficient moving solutions. Standing by their motto of “People Focused, Woman Owned, Family Managed,” American Moving & Hauling grew in a more personal way this past year by rebranding and increasing their marketing and social media efforts. Owner Amy Cushman Jah says it’s been a very productive year, despite the crazy housing market, and as part of her rebranding strategy, you’re likely seeing their bright pink moving trucks in more and more locations! “We’ve been much more active in the community,” Amy says. “I’m definitely even more intent on focusing and working with womenowned businesses than ever before.”

“On November 12, I’m joining a group of local ladies at the Spa at Rock Barn in Conover, for a day of networking and much-needed pampering. If you’re interested, simply call and schedule your own spa services, and meet us there! Then, on November 30 from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., we’re hosting a sip-and-shop at Primm’s in Winston-Salem, for some shopping and networking during their two-year anniversary celebration, with hopefully more boutique shopping along Burke Street, and dinner afterwards at Eastern Standard for anyone who wants to continue the conversations and camaraderie,” says Amy. A seasoned entrepreneur who knows the value of community, and is blessed with a passion for providing top-notch moving services, she’s been at the helm of the company since its inception in 2005. With years of experience in the industry, she understands the nuances and challenges of the moving and hauling business, enabling her to lead the company with savvy and poise.

“That event was actually pivotal for me,” she says. “I began more networking immediately with women I met there! It surprised me how many other women actually knew who I was, and knew about our business. I connected to so many people there — new things really fell into place after that!”

Her hands-on approach in managing the company has been instrumental in shaping American Moving & Hauling into what it is today: a trusted moving partner for countless individuals and businesses, locally and out of state. With combined ratings from customers, their 4.9 stars out of 5 confirms that you can trust this team to safely get your treasured items and furniture where they need to go. From packing, unpacking, labor only services, car transport, junk removal, and secure storage, the company has many options to fit your situation.

Amy has also started what she calls “meetups,” simply for women to network and enjoy building community together — all very casual, but the perfect atmosphere to share ideas and inspiration.

Whether it’s a short-distance move within Winston-Salem or a long-distance relocation for your entire family, American Moving & Hauling provides trusted and reliable services to ensure a smooth transition to a new location.

That inspiration grew, Amy shares, after being involved with Forsyth Woman magazine’s Women on the Move Leadership Conference last March.

Residential Moving: The company specializes in residential moves, ensuring that every item in the home is handled with care and securely transported to the new residence. The team is extraordinary at packing a truck and making sure your goods don’t shift and get damaged during transport.

Commercial Moving: American Moving and Hauling assists businesses with their relocation needs, helping them move their offices and equipment seamlessly to minimize downtime and disruptions to their operations. The company also offers professional packing and unpacking services, ensuring items are appropriately packed, labeled, and organized for safe transportation and efficient unpacking at the destination. “We’re licensed, bonded, and insured, and we’re a team of professionals who take our job very seriously,” says Amy. Every phase of the moving experience is guided by the professional team of employees who are proud to serve their customers, and they pride themselves on 100% customer satisfaction, reliability, and integrity. With a comprehensive range of packages and a super positive customer-centric approach, American Moving & Hauling continues to serve the community with stress-free moving experiences, no matter which direction you’re headed. The holidays are fast approaching, and it’s time to start planning how to make the most of this festive season. Make sure your holiday plans include the extraordinary display of dance, music and stage magic at “The Nutcracker,” a beloved tradition in the Triad, presented annually by the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA).

This year, UNCSA’s acclaimed production of “The Nutcracker” is moving locations. UNCSA will present five dazzling performances from December 7 through 10 at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro while the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem undergoes a longawaited renovation. The performances will take place Thursday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, December 9 at noon and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, December 10 at 2 p.m. Individual ticket prices vary by seat location, beginning at $31. But please note, they are selling fast so be sure to purchase yours soon at TangerCenter.com. Optional upgrades include on-site VIP parking, Lee & Wrangler Lounge access and the Tanger Center’s pre-event Prelude Dining experience for select performances. This year, UNCSA Chancellor Brian Cole will take the podium to conduct the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra for Tchaikovsky’s cherished ballet. Cole joined UNCSA as Dean of the School of Music in 2016. An accomplished conductor, he has led orchestras and operas throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. A truly impressive collaborative project, the UNCSA schools of Dance, Design & Production and Music come together each year to produce the heralded ballet. The temporary move to the Tanger Center is a great opportunity for the university as it will provide students the unique

experience of mounting and performing a production in a 3,000-seat, stateof-the-art venue a short distance from UNCSA. “We are so excited to bring the special UNCSA tradition of ‘The Nutcracker’ to the Tanger Center this year,” said UNCSA Chancellor Brian Cole. “It is our great privilege to be able to provide our students with the experience of creating and performing in this fantastic venue and to reach new audiences in Greensboro and beyond.” “The Tanger Center is delighted to host UNCSA’s production of ‘The Nutcracker’ for the first time,” said Greensboro Coliseum Complex and Tanger Center Managing Director Matt Brown. “We hope that having the school’s wonderful annual production in Greensboro at our magnificent venue will help expand the audience for this beloved community tradition.” Debuting on December 10, 1966, at Winston-Salem’s Reynolds Auditorium, UNCSA’s rendition of “The Nutcracker” has since been reimagined, recreated and refreshed numerous times. Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, UNCSA engaged in a groundbreaking interdisciplinary collaboration between the schools of Filmmaking, Design & Production, Music and Dance to create a filmed adaptation of the production. This enduring Winston-Salem tradition, which has consistently earned accolades from both critics and ardent audiences, maintains its reputation year after year. In 2023, the production will once again feature choreography by UNCSA faculty member Ilya Kozadayev and the artistic touch of guest lighting designer Penny Jacobus. Mercedes-Benz of Greensboro and Mercedes-Benz of Winston-Salem are the presenting sponsors of the 2023 production of “The Nutcracker.” For tickets and additional information on optional upgrades please visit tangercenter.com/nutcracker.

GOLDMAN CENTER for Facial Plastic Surgery

Lifting Spirits in a New Location!

by M A R T I E E M O R Y, photos by J E J P H O T O S

Serving clients and beautiful faces in Winston-Salem and the entire Triad area since 1999, the Goldman Center for Facial Plastic Surgery is known and loved for inspiring hope and selfconfidence in patients of all ages. If looking in the mirror no longer brings a smile to your face, and you’re feeling the nudge to focus a bit more on self-care, it’s time to research their “renewal” options, including neck lifts, face lifts, rhinoplasty, and eyelid surgery. You can be assured that your best interests — and the most positive results — are their top priority! Now, in addition to the popular satellite office in Boone — which Dr. Goldman calls a “destination” surgery spot, housing an actual hospital with the added bonus of the healing power of the beautiful North Carolina mountains — there’s a brand new office in Clemmons, NC.

Along with the honest, highest-quality professional care you’ve come to know from the Goldman team (including computer imaging to address issues and analyze realistic expectations from all angles!), the beautiful new space will have its own operating room in the coming months. Dr. Goldman is also collaborating with two colleagues in the new building — Molly Fuller, MD, PhD, of Triad Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery, and Maryanne Lindsay, MD, of Innovative Aesthetics. “Patients in the Winston-Salem/Greensboro areas wanted more access to our services, and we are excited to reach out with even more, from the new office location!” says Dr. Goldman. He now happily spends half of his work week at the mountain office, and the other half seeing patients right here in Clemmons.

If you feel plastic surgery is the best option, always look to the best professionals to deliver the best, most satisfying results. A graduate of Duke University and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Dr. Goldman completed two fellowships at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then opened his practice at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he served as the Director of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 1999 to 2012. He is double board certified with both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Goldman’s commitment to HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles), is also a top priority, and their heartfelt work in Guatemala, Vietnam, Ecuador, and Peru is a blessing to patients and the medical team alike. HUGS is an organization working tirelessly to improve congenital deformities such as cleft lip, cleft palate, and microtia, a congenital deformity where the external ear is not fully developed. Each mission trip finds a compassionate group of doctors and medical staff dedicated to a goal of restoring smiles and a sense of hope to children in those countries. Doctors who

Finding a Place to Grow and Thrive by K A R E N C O O P E R

When I was seven years old at camp one summer, we planted beans. We watered them and checked on them every day, and the anticipation of watching them grow was exhilarating and remarkable. We couldn’t wait for the buds to peek through. The dedicated gardeners I know feel this anticipation and thrill at watching their plants grow the same way I did as a child. They find joy and peace and even healthy doses of therapy in the acts of digging and planting, in the daily rituals of watering and checking on things, in solving problems like pests coming in, in waiting for the stems to emerge, and in the harvesting of their bounty. Gardening is security and love. A garden is a place where plants and people can grow and thrive. Just as gardens need tending, so, too, do people need very special care to grow and thrive. If they don’t get the love and attention they need, it can set them up for pain, suffering and failure all through their lives. The man I am so blessed to be married to is someone who didn’t have much security or safety throughout his life. Born into chaos, he lived with neglect, brutal abuse, poor role models and trouble just about everywhere he turned - so much so that he became comfortable only when chaos was present. From research studies we know that the experiences of child abuse and neglect can stay with survivors for a long time. Even as adults, these people can continue to suffer in ways that can include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, guilt, physical illness, disturbing memories, eating disorders and dissociation. They also can have a very challenging time forming and keeping adult relationships. Many survivors of child abuse and neglect have trouble identifying, managing, and appropriately expressing their feelings, and due to this, they tend to have trouble coping with stress. When I met my husband nearly 10 years ago, it was the beginning of a spectacular love story, the kind you dream about, but also the beginning of a long road of walking through the fire together. With common effects of child abuse and neglect in adulthood being anger, irritability, and difficulty expressing feelings constructively, we had our work cut out for us. We were challenged by all these things, and little by little,

year by year, we learned to communicate better, we practiced humility, we prayed a lot, we learned to trust each other, we became better and stronger. We became best friends. We survived these difficult times together. Isaiah 43:2 - When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

ROOTS OF THERAPEUTIC GARDENING IN THE U.S. Gardening has a rich history in the United States, and its therapeutic benefits are part of that. In the late 1700s, Dr. Benjamin Rush, a prominent physician, and signer of the Declaration of Independence, documented that garden settings and digging in gardens were significant factors in recovery for patients with mental illness. As a result, interest in therapeutic landscapes emerged and gardening as rehabilitation was born. A garden is a sort of sanctuary, a chamber roofed by heaven… to wander in, to cherish, to dream through undisturbed. - Sir Robert Lorimer, 1864–1929. My husband keeps a lovely garden each year. He finds comfort there and he tends it with painstaking care. It is his safe place, his sanctuary. Likewise, having the safety and security of a dependable, loving family has allowed him to let his guard down and trust that the people around him will care for him as he cares for them. He is meticulous in his care of his garden that grows a bounty each year just as he is thorough and detailed in his care for his family. He is thoughtful and intentional with his actions and with the love he pours onto those under his protection. Though he is the same man who holds the same scars from his youth, he is undeniably changed, too, and clearly content in this life that must sometimes seem so foreign to him, given where he came from. Love and security have allowed him to become the man he was always meant to be, and he is thriving, we are thriving…the garden is abundant.

The Dogwood in Lewisville & The Dogwood Boutique

A Little Something for Everyone on Your Gift List

by C A R O LY N S P E T E R S O N , photos by P H O T O A R T I S T R Y B Y M E L I N D A

As the holidays approach, no doubt you have made your list, checked it at least twice, separated the naughty from the nice, and have those people in your life who pretty much have everything, so what do you get for them? The Dogwood in Lewisville and The Dogwood Boutique, two shops at one location, have a little something for everyone on your gift giving list from the youngest to the oldest.

AN INTERESTING RETIREMENT PLAN For owners Bonnie Kiger and Randall Tuttle, The Dogwood in Lewisville and The Dogwood Boutique, are their ideas of retirement. They waited until most people’s career plans are ending to venture out and make their dream of a shop or shops come true. “Randall and I grew up in the area, and after a few moves away to live at the beach, we reconnected and together are doing something we enjoy. The Dogwood in Lewisville was Randall’s dream and I am excited to join him on the journey, and The Dogwood Boutique just adds to the fun,” said Bonnie.

A BOUTIQUE WITH TWO SHOPS AT ONE LOCATION! Small, locally owned businesses have become a major draw to those interested in shopping and supporting local and also finding items that are a bit different and unique compared to things you could buy at a big box store. The Dogwood in Lewisville and The Dogwood Boutique offer gifts for others, and maybe a little gift for you on days when you want to treat yourself. Both shops have something for everyone from new to vintage, antiques, to gifts and home decor. “We offer reasonably priced women’s clothing, infant and children’s clothing, gifts, jewelry, accessories, and even shoes! In one-stop shopping, we hope our

40 | ForsythWoman.com

customers can find something for everyone on their gift list or perhaps a little pick me up for themselves,” Bonnie stated.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PERSONAL TOUCH MAKE FOR A GREAT SHOPPING EXPERIENCE Customer service sets both shops apart with Randall and Bonnie at The Dogwood in Lewisville and Yvonne Aull at The Dogwood Boutique. “All of us focus on making shopping relaxed and fun, while showing our customers all that makes us special. We have really focused on the customer experience, but have also made an effort to offer items of quality, with great price points, all with presentation within the shops,” stated Bonnie. The Dogwood Boutique in Lewisville is the only boutique in the area that carries Tonies, which are screen free devices for children ages two to eight years old. “The Tonies have really become a hit with our customers. We also have some precious clothing for infants and toddlers. Teens can find some cool pieces of clothing and moms and grandmas have plenty to pick from, too. We just want customers to feel special and love what they wear!” Randall said. Plush Bedrooms

Stand the Test of Time Is it Soft? Is it Luxurious? Is it Timeless? These are the questions that our clients most often ask when we are planning to redo their bedroom. “Yes!” is typically my answer to these questions. Bella Notte, Sferra Fine Linens and Peacock Alley are all featured in our Clemmons retail store. My signature accent color is blue, and we often use it in our clients’ bedrooms. The reason is that blue is relaxing, romantic and soothing. I recently painted my own bedroom and bathroom Paperwhite by Benjamin Moore. It is one of the most pleasing colors and I am in love with it. It is a beautiful, light, crisp blue. In one of our showcase homes, we accented the blue with lots of white along with hints of grey and gold in the tile for the adjoining bathroom. We also provided the bedding in multiple layers. We drew from all three of the above-mentioned bedding lines. The result was a calm oasis.

CALL US FOR TURNKEY BATH REMODEL

Our clients ask us for elegant spaces. We begin with soft fabrics, a tall, tufted headboard, and designer lighting. Next, Nightstands can be painted or stained, whichever the client prefers. Lastly, we will tie the whole look together with a plush, cozy rug. Now, imagine yourself in such a space. Couture textiles that fit our everyday lifestyle are what we recommend. The bedding lines mentioned above are all washable and have the highest quality cotton and fabrics that you can find. Home furnishing styles can change but your bedroom can remain classic and timeless. When selecting furniture for your bedroom, imagine the sense of calm you wish to feel at the end of a long day. Or where you would like to read a book on a rainy day. Everyday living should be easy, and your home should be your safe space. You do not have to sacrifice luxury for comfort. Let the best of both worlds combine to create the bedroom of your dreams. An investment in your bedroom can help you achieve the feeling of falling in love again with the things you already have. Get a good night’s sleep enjoying your own private paradise. Happy Thanksgiving & God Bless,

Manifestation Done “ Right”

by J E N O L E N I C Z A K B R O W N

You’ve probably heard of the idea of “manifestation” in your work or personal life if you follow any of the empowerment gurus. Folks can “manifest” anything – just want it enough and POOF like magic, it happens. The basic premise behind making manifestation work for you is if you believe it, repeat it, write it down – it will happen. You’ll make it happen. While the power of positive thinking and belief is important, it’s equally important to acknowledge that often the “success” behind a lot of these manifested moments that folks talk about was already built in to their lives: the wealthy woman who “manifests” a business, the woman who has lots of free time “manifests” a healthy lifestyle, working out 6 times a week, and the socially checked in woman who “manifests” a key meeting with someone to help her on her big idea – these might be examples given of “manifestation” but take a moment to consider this. Would it have happened to anyone else? Could it happen to another woman with a very different life, background, and upbringing? This being said, some principles behind manifestation can be incredibly valuable in “making” things happen in your life, with a little work. Here are a few things you can do that go beyond the right place and the right time:

WRITE IT DOWN As simple as it sounds, this is possibly one of the most valuable steps. If you can’t write down what you want clearly and concisely, then how will you know when you’ve achieved it? Take a moment to write down exactly what you want as clearly as possible. Read it out loud to make sure it makes sense and is as clear and concise as you may think it is.

44 | ForsythWoman.com

BREAK IT DOWN Take what you wrote down and break it down into bite-sized, actionfocused steps. This is goal setting 101 – if you have a larger want and you can accomplish little pieces that contribute to the larger want, every step you take is a step in the right direction – even if it’s a different path than you envision. Once you’ve broken it down, decide what step is your first – and if you have to break that down more, don’t worry! Tiny steps are still steps!

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

You might come in contact with clear opportunities and challenges, and some days might feel more challenging than others. Take note of both of these, and know what might assist you and what might hold you back. There’s an idea if you’re running in the woods and something is chasing you, you’re going to be more and more scared if you never turn around to see what it is. The moment you see what it is, you can start strategizing. Just turn around. Don’t just pay attention to the challenges either. What can you tap into to get a win?

SHOW, DON’T TELL Take action! So many people just talk about what they want to accomplish or worse, what they are “doing” that they don’t take action on the things they want to do! Do things that require action – not just words – and see what happens.

EVALUATE – RINSE, WASH, REPEAT

Every few days or weeks, take a moment to check-in and see where you are – making sure you’re moving in the right direction and still want what you thought you did! Sometimes that can change, and that’s ok. Evaluate and then start the process over with another action item – and keep going until you’re there! True manifestation – one that isn’t linked with privilege – comes from work, focus and a bit of luck. You can make it happen.

Hustle & Heart The Power of Personal Branding as a Small Business by TA R Y N J E R E Z , OF GOFORITCREATIVE.COM

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

“Nobody is interested in me.” This objection to sharing about themselves in their business comes from more women in business than I can count! The truth is, a whole lot of people out there are interested in knowing exactly who you are; from your interests and idiosyncrasies to your values and personality. In fact, it’s proven that businesses that include a personal brand as part of their marketing strategy see more conversions and sales from their digital marketing efforts. This month, I’m sharing how personal branding packs a punch with audiences and why you should consider establishing your own!

GIVES YOU PEAK CREATIVE LIBERTIES

If you spend a lot of time creating content and working on your digital marketing strategy, there are definitely ebbs and flows of creative juices over different seasons. There can be difficulty shutting out the noise of what other companies are doing and staying focused on who you are as a brand. When you lean into your personal brand, who you are at the core has a favorable way of taking over and being the central influence. You have more freedom and inspiration at your fingertips to show up authentically as yourself, even if it’s a more honed or polished version of yourself.

ESTABLISHES TRUST & CREDIBILITY

Think back to first meeting some of our closest friends and colleagues in your life. Do you remember how those relationships started and where that connection initially began? Your personal brand gives you an opportunity to showcase your expertise, experience and values in ways that your overall “company brand” may not do. Remember that, “people like to buy from people.” You get to choose the lens your audience sees your business through, so why not shift towards showing up as a trusted expert in your industry or someone encouraging and empowering? Your personal brand instills confidence in your company, your products and your services.

DIFFERENTIATES BETWEEN THE COMPETITION

One of the biggest obstacles in running a small business today is overcoming the oversaturated markets and fighting to be seen. A lot of this is due to the constant visibility we have as consumers to businesses online and over social media. Personal branding carves out a unique identity within your industry that others can’t duplicate. Why? Because it’s you. The things that make you special, relatable, human - this is where competitors may be failing to show up. Even if it’s not a direct motivator in establishing a personal brand, it definitely gives you a competitive advantage.

BUILD LONGEVITY AS A BRAND

When you pour personal elements into your business’s brand, the level of connection between you and your customers becomes something richer. Often, branding elements like visual assets and messaging change over time. Your personal brand, however, may evolve slightly but will continuously help nurture client relationships from year to year. You are

46 | ForsythWoman.com

showing up and building a relationship from across your branding and marketing assets that are built to last. When you have a personal brand you can lean into it as little or as much as you want! This can allow you to have way more flexibility in your branding if you shift gears across different business ventures in the future.

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, ask 2-3 of your closest friends, family or colleagues what they think of when they think of you. This could be brief descriptions, items, emotions, just as long as they go with their first thought and share them openly. Take what they say and see what similarities you can spot. How can you begin adding some of your personal traits to your personal branding?

Blending the Best of Home Decor by M A R T I E E M O R Y photos by S A I L O F F P H O T O G R A P H Y

As creative as its clever name implies, Carolina Vintiques (yes, that’s a blend of “antiques and vintage”) this popular shopping destination in Clemmons is a treasure for lovers of distinctive home décor. “When I came up with this name, I was simply a vendor myself in a friend’s store,” owner Shelle McCollum explains. “I felt like since I had a booth, it needed a name. It just came to me, in the same way all my other business names came to me — it was a vision that spoke to my heart, and I went with it.” So many descriptive words are well-suited to describe the ambiance here — charming, nostalgic, fun, artistic — and it’s likely you’ll never leave empty-handed! “What I believe sets us apart is that we carry such a unique mix of new items, but we sprinkle in vintage treasures, giving you the best of both worlds,” says Shelle. She moved to this area 11 years ago and remembers driving by her current location and admiring the building. “It always spoke to me!” she recalls. Having connected with Forsyth Woman magazine early on as well, she also dreamed of November 2023 | 49

being on the cover one day — knowing that would be a milestone for the small business she hadn’t even started yet! For the past three years, Carolina Vintiques has been nestled in a much more spacious location than the original spot in a charming Hanestown mill house in Winston-Salem — the city Shelle fell in love with when she first moved here. Discerning shoppers and budding design clients were soon loving her right back, and spreading the word about her incredible eye for distinctive décor. In the meantime, Shelle was immediately noticing that the community is a real haven for creative entrepreneurs. Her most recent “leap of faith” business move proves that no matter what style suits your home and family, you’ll still find plenty of farmhouse chic, as well as contemporary furniture pieces and accessories at Carolina Vintiques. The Clemmons location is super convenient for a quick shopping trip at lunchtime or a lazy Saturday spent browsing and dreaming. It features seven spaces, occupied by Shelle and six other unique, personally chosen vendors who add their own exclusive flair to their vignettes, yet the layout of the shop blends together in perfect harmony. “I love having a small, select group of vendors — it makes the shopping experience less overwhelming for customers. I also enjoy encouraging other women to start their own businesses — and love sharing this opportunity with my vendors — our success is definitely not all about me!” Shop displays are constantly updated, based on each vendor’s creative mood at the time, so part of the fun is not knowing what you’ll find from day to day. Vendors often change out their spaces during evening hours — so coming in every morning can be a treat to see what the creative “elves” have blended overnight! You’re always guaranteed a happy mix of home décor and antiques — and creative collections from different vendors. Need an idea? Maybe you’re the owner of a favorite wooden bowl at home that desperately needs a little sprucing up for fall — and that’s where the shop’s selection of faux florals and greenery can work its magic. Customers regularly bring in containers and ask for guidance on faux florals — which, Shelle points out, is actually their largest selling category, with furniture and candles following next. Or, maybe you’re in the market for a seasonal wreath for the front door. It’s always the right time for candles, diffusers, and room sprays — and

Carolina Vintiques has a collection of scents you’ll love, along with vintage table accessories that are sure to make great conversation pieces at your holiday gatherings. (Many of those vintage kitchen items will remind you of childhood days, too — we guarantee it!) Feast your eyes on decorative hand towels, pillows, artwork, and pumpkins galore. Shelle also offers custom painting of your unique pieces from home, using the color of your choice from the store’s popular selection of mineral paints by Fusion. The Fusion brand makes projects a breeze with all-in-one primer, paint, and topcoat. You

can start by texting a photo of your favorite piece — and receive a price quote to get the process going. The staff can also walk you through step-by-step if you’re starting a DIY project. Hint: Save all your inspiration photos and snapshots of your home space to share when you come in to visit! “Re-doing a room at home, or creating an updated vignette, can seem overwhelming,” Shelle explains. “That’s where we offer in-person and virtual consulting services to pave the way for an amazing finished product, and make your creative process an easy one!” With the season of giving now in full swing, and Carolina Vintiques already fully stocked and glowing for the holidays, add them to your shopping itinerary for truly one-of-a-kind gift choices. A special touch for a friend’s home or office is always a good idea, and the store’s perfect balance of vintage, modern, and eclectic should offer something for everyone on your list. Be sure to plan a visit to their annual Open House and anniversary celebration on December 1st, where you can enjoy refreshments, register for prizes, and soak up the magical holiday ambiance. You’ll love every minute of your time at Carolina Vintiques! A H I STO RY O F H E A LT H C A R E IN FORSYTH COUNTY by K A R E N C O O P E R In the late 1800s, most healthcare was taking place in the home. Only those who could not afford home-based healthcare went to the hospital. Hospitals of that time were places where the poor who suffered from serious illness could go for medical care. But as cities grew, a need for a different kind of hospital became evident. In 1887, a group of women volunteers called the Ladies Twin City Hospital Association responded to that need by organizing to raise funds. The name “Twin City” refers to the two towns of Winston and Salem, two distinct cities until 1913 when they became the combined Winston-Salem. Within six months, in December 1887, this group of women used money saved from their household budgets to open the first Twin City Hospital inside the Martin Grogan home on North Liberty Street. At this new hospital, up to 10 patients could be hospitalized for $5 a week. The women (whose names included Reynolds, Hanes, and other prominent families) went on to bigger fundraising efforts by visiting homes and coordinating community meetings to raise money. They also asked the mayors of both Winston and of Salem to give $12 a month toward the effort. Thanks to more fundraising led by the Ladies Twin City Hospital Association, a new, modern hospital was soon built from the ground up and opened debt-free in 1895 on Brookstown Avenue in downtown Winston. In 1901, Twin-City Hospital on Brookstown started a nurse training program. By the time of its closing on November 4, 1914, the hospital had added a maternity ward and a children’s ward. Both the first hospital on Liberty Street and the second on Brookstown Avenue served indigent white people or poor newcomers. Slater Hospital was established for African Americans in 1902 and continued until 1912, after that, African Americans were admitted to Twin City Hospital. As for the women who started it all, they did much more than just raise money to get these local hospitals started. Nurses and hospital leaders (then called matrons, superintendents, and directors of nursing) were almost all women for much of the hospitals’ early history. Of note, North Carolina became the first state to have registered nurses. And in the early days especially, it was a very difficult job. Several smaller, more temporary hospitals tended to patients who were victims of epidemics that sometimes plagued the city. During the flu epidemics of 1918, 1919, and 1920, poor people who became ill were cared for at the A. Clint Miller home on Fifth Street, the J. W. Hanes home on Fourth Street, at the Depot Street School, and at a house on Maple Street owned by Charles H. Jones, a prominent African American businessman. Twin-City hospital closed its doors in 1914 and transferred its patients to a

brand-new, 90-bed hospital when it opened in the newly combined WinstonSalem. Originally known simply as the “New” Twin-City Hospital, it was renamed “City Memorial Hospital” in 1921 and by 1930 there were 547 beds. The Reynolds’ family philanthropy also included health care for the marginalized. The Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospital for African Americans opened in 1938 with one hundred beds. In 1941, ninety more beds were added, and it became the third largest hospital for African Americans in the United States. The “Katie B.” provided care for thirty-two years until Reynolds Memorial/ Reynolds Health Center replaced it in 1970. As medical knowledge and treatment technologies continued to grow into the twentieth century, hospitals began to attract people of all economic levels. North Carolina Baptist Hospital, founded in 1923, and Forsyth Memorial Hospital, opened in 1964 as the successor to City Memorial, both provided high-tech medical care to residents of Winston-Salem and beyond. Wake Forest School of Medicine (formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine) was founded in 1902 as a two-year medical school on the campus of Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, NC. North Carolina Baptist Hospital had opened in 1923 as an 88-bed hospital in Winston-Salem. In 1941, the medical school expanded to four years and moved to Winston-Salem. Brenner Children’s Hospital and Health Services was established in 1986. In 1997, CMI and Presbyterian Healthcare in Charlotte, North Carolina merged to form Novant Health, which currently includes 13 hospitals, six philanthropic foundations, a free-standing emergency department, physician clinics, outpatient surgery and diagnostic centers, rehabilitation programs and community health outreach programs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, and the national MedQuest organization with 100 diagnostic imaging centers in 10 states. In October 2020 Atrium Health acquired Wake Forest Baptist Health with Wake Forest School of Medicine becoming the academic Core of Atrium Health. This expanded the enterprise to a 42-hospital academic health system serving communities in four states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. Additionally ,in May 2022, healthcare giants Advocate Aurora Health and Atrium Health announced their merger. The new organization will now have roots in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Wisconsin, and Illinois, serving over 5 million patients at over 1,000 sites of care. “The world of healthcare as we know it is changing at warp speed – and it is rapidly becoming more digital, personalized, scientific and complex,” said Eugene A. Woods, president, and chief executive officer of Atrium Health. As you can see, healthcare in Winston-Salem has grown by leaps and bounds in just 100 years.

No matter how many guests are gathered at your Thanksgiving or Christmas table this year, food is decidedly the main attraction as you celebrate simply being together! With little or no extra time on your November and December calendar, there’s only one name to count on for the comfort food you absolutely need this time of year: Simply Southern Cuisine in Clemmons! Family owned, and the beacon of quintessential homemade goodness, Simply Southern Cuisine is known for consistent quality and the absolute freshest ingredients. Owner Lisa Miller and her staff have loved being part of customers’ holiday traditions (not to mention busy weeknights year-round when good food on the table is essential!) — and celebrated their 15th anniversary in 2021.

The Holiday Goodness

The business has continuously grown and updated, while staying true to those original, irresistible recipes. “I realize with the addition of the larger oven last year, and increases in online orders, my business has evolved. We are now able to be more proactive than reactive!” says Lisa. The addition of a walk-in freezer also continues to be a blessing!

You Deserve!

“We now have room to store every menu item in 9” x 11” pans, as well as more volume of each item on the menu,” Lisa explains. “When we make a batch of a favorite item, it’s often 10 times the original recipe! Our regular customers know they can walk in and pick up a 9”x 11” pan of any menu item without having to special order.”

by M A R T I E E M O R Y

Lisa is also thrilled that online orders have increased significantly — most of the dinners for three, six, and 15 are being placed online — where it’s so much easier to order, especially if a customer is making multiple selections. Online ordering gives you extra time to ponder the delicious selection of entrées,

side items, and desserts — and to make sure you’ve included every family member’s favorite — from the comfort of your home. Their family-size favorites are a tradition, and nothing eases your holiday stress like having a delicious, homemade dinner picked up hot and ready to serve. But, if you prefer, pick up frozen and ready to cook on your own schedule. Thanksgiving menu options are available either fresh or frozen. Choose a complete meal for three, six, or 15 people, or order the individual sides and entrées that are your family’s favorites. For example, dinner for 15 includes a whole ham or two whole oven-roasted turkey breasts, along with three side items and a dessert served in 9” x 11” pans. Desserts for Thanksgiving week celebrations this year will include apple pie, pecan pie, pumpkin crisp, and cherry yum yum, while side dishes include green bean casserole, sausage pecan stuffing, sweet potato casserole, and broccoli casserole, among many tempting others. We can’t emphasize ordering early enough! For Thanksgiving this year, the deadline for ordering is Friday, November 17. The store will be open from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, of Thanksgiving week, then closed Thursday November 23 through Sunday November 26. For Christmas, the deadline for orders will be Saturday, December 16. The store will be open normal hours the week of Christmas (Monday through Friday 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.) The “family” of employees at Simply Southern Cuisine pours heart and soul into every dish, and the results inspire the warmest times of celebration with your own family. There’s also a good chance one of their signature dishes will remind you of a favorite childhood memory — and there’s nothing sweeter than that. Switching gears, the other side of this business is catering. Lisa says the catering side of Simply Southern Cuisine has been so busy lately that it’s felt like Christmas since the beginning of August. That means November and December are sure to be non-stop! So her message is simple: Plan Your Holiday Catering Now!

If you are interested in a free estimate on holiday catering for corporate lunches or private parties, please complete the catering inquiry form on the website, and Lisa will do her best to send you an estimate within 24 hours. Simply Southern Cuisine is located at 3570-C Clemmons Road, in Clemmons, NC, 336-712-4636, and online at mysimplysouthern. com, where you can view their holiday menus and those all-important ordering deadlines!

NAVIGATING A HEALTHY AND JOYFUL HOLIDAY SEASON by J A N E B U R N E T T E The holiday season is a time filled with joy, celebration, and the company of loved ones. It’s also a season synonymous with indulgent foods and drinks, which can make maintaining a healthy lifestyle a challenge. With some simple swaps and strategies, you can navigate the holidays without compromising your health or feeling guilty about what you eat. We’ll explore easy ways to savor your favorite holiday treats while keeping your well-being in mind. Optimize Your Plate: To Help You Put the Fork Down When it comes to enjoying holiday feasts without overindulging, your plate composition can be a powerful ally. By having some strategy with what you put on your plate, you can savor the flavors while keeping portions in check. Here are a few tips to help you navigate this: •

Prioritize Color: A vibrant plate is often a nutritious plate. Aim to include an array of colorful, above-ground vegetables in your meal. These veggies tend to be rich in fiber, which can help you feel fuller for longer and curb the temptation to overeat. Think broccoli, bell peppers, leafy greens, and brussel sprouts. By filling your plate with these colorful choices, you’re not only enhancing the visual appeal of your meal but also boosting its nutritional value.

Embrace Protein: Another key to a satisfying and balanced holiday plate is protein. Ensure that your plate includes at least 2-3 servings of protein. A handy way to visualize a serving of protein is to think of a deck of cards. Protein-rich foods like turkey, chicken, fish, tofu, or legumes can help you feel satiated and satisfied, reducing the urge to keep reaching for more servings of less nutritious options.

Take Your Time: Amidst the holiday excitement, it’s easy to rush through your meal. However, allowing your body the time it needs to signal satiety is crucial. Slow down and savor each bite. Put your fork down between bites, engage in conversation, and truly enjoy the flavors. Taking your time not only helps prevent overeating but also enhances your overall dining experience.

Ferments for a Happier Tummy: Incorporate Probiotic Foods Holiday feasting can sometimes lead to digestive discomfort. To ease bloating, gas, and indigestion, include fermented foods in your meals. Sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi, unsweetened kombucha, and kefir are rich in probiotics, which promote a healthy gut and aid digestion. Having a small portion of fermented foods 30 minutes before a meal can reduce digestive issues and improve nutrient absorption. By adding probioticrich foods to your holiday menu, you’ll support your digestive health and enhance the overall enjoyment of your meals. Soups to the Rescue: Nourishing and Satisfying When faced with tempting, sugary and carb-rich foods at holiday gatherings, consider soup as your secret weapon. Consuming a bowl of soup 30-60 minutes before an event can reduce hunger and prevent overindulging. The volume of soup in your stomach triggers feelings of fullness, curbing your appetite.

prevent that energy crash but also contributes to overall blood sugar stability, making you feel more balanced and energized. But that’s not all – a stroll after eating also assists in combating digestive distress. Bloating, gas, and abdominal distention, which can be all too familiar after a feast, may be alleviated by this gentle activity. The motion of walking encourages the movement of food through your digestive system, reducing the chances of these uncomfortable issues. Navigating the Holidays with Confidence The holiday season need not be a time of dietary deprivation or guilt. By making simple swaps, choosing healthier options, and maintaining a balanced mindset, you can relish the festivities while staying true to your health goals. Remember to prioritize nutrient-dense foods, include probiotic-rich choices, and listen to your body’s cues. Indulge in the joys of the season, and create lasting memories with your loved ones. Cheers to a delightful and health-conscious holiday season!

Create a Budget: Establish a detailed budget that outlines your income and all your expenses. This will help you understand where your money is going and where you can make improvements. 2. Track Your Spending: Keep track of your daily expenses to identify areas where you might be overspending. Use apps or budgeting tools to make this process easier. 3. Emergency Fund: Aim to build an emergency fund with at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses. This provides a financial safety net in case of unexpected events. 4. Set Financial Goals: Define specific financial goals for the year. Whether it is paying off debt, saving for a vacation, or investing for retirement, having clear goals will motivate you to stay on track. 5. Reduce Debt: Prioritize paying off high-interest debts, such as credit card balances. Consider consolidating debts or negotiating with creditors for lower interest rates. 6. Save Consistently: Make saving a habit by automating transfers to your savings or investment accounts. Set up separate savings accounts for different goals, such as an emergency fund, vacation, or retirement. If you need help creating a plan with any of the above items, we are here to help!

The Air Fryer: Another Kitchen Staple by K AT I E M A X E Y, M S , R D , I B C L C

Air fryers have had more than just a temporary moment of fame. To some, they have become a kitchen staple. Have you not jumped on the air fryer train yet? I pushed against it for a while. I didn’t need another kitchen appliance and I thought it was just for cooking fried food. But then, I gave in and began experimenting. Maybe you should, too! Let’s talk about why they have become a household staple over the past few years. •

Air fryers can reheat anything. Are you having leftovers for dinner but not sure those leftover French fries will be crispy again? Reheat them in the air fryer- trust me!

They are a hands-free way of cooking. From grains to vegetables to chicken to eggs and even seafood. The air fryer can do it.

They circulate super-hot air all around the surface of the food if you don’t overcrowd the fryer, causing your food to have a healthy way of being crispy.

The air fryer needs very little oil to work, improving your food intake which can eventually reduce disease risk.

It’s a great way to get kids involved in cooking. With just a few pushes of buttons, let your kids take over!

Air fryers range in size and price points. You can even get them with more than one basket so you can cook two foods at once! If you’ve never had one, maybe start with a basic option to get the feel of the air fryer and see what you find yourself cooking in it the most. Eventually you can upgrade to a larger and fancier air fryer, but it’s okay to start with the basic one. Need a few recipes to get you started? Check out the ones below!

AIR FRYER CARROTS Serves 4 Ingredients: 8-10 full-sized carrots, peeled and cut into pieces 2 teaspoons oil ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon parsley leaves Instructions: 1. Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees F. 2. Place carrots in a bowl. Add the oil, salt, and garlic powder, and stir until all carrots are coated. 3. When the air fryer has finished preheating, add carrots in an even layer. 4. Cook the carrots for 10-12 minutes, pausing it halfway through to shake/stir carrots around. 5. When carrots are done, place in a serving bowl and sprinkle with fresh parsley. Enjoy!

AIR FRYER CHICKEN Serves 4 Ingredients: 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 tablespoon olive oil Seasonings of your choice (below is a dry rub recommendation, you can switch these out!) 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon salt Instructions: 1. Preheat the air fryer to 425 degrees F. 2. Place seasonings of your choice in a bowl to create a dry rub. Stir to combine. 3. Add oil to chicken breasts, stir to coat. 4. Sprinkle dry rub on both sides of the chicken breasts. 5. Once the air fryer has preheated, place seasoned chicken breasts into the air fryer. Make sure to create a single layer of chicken breasts, without overlapping pieces. 6. After air frying for 10 minutes, flip chicken and air fry for another 10 minutes. Chicken is done when the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F. Enjoy!

AIR FRYER GRILLED CHEESE Serves 4 Ingredients: 8 slices of bread of your choice 16 ounces cheese slices (4 ounces per sandwich) Softened butter Instructions: 1. Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees F. 2. Place cheese slices between two pieces of bread. Make sure the cheese does not hang outside of the bread slices. Cut off any cheese that hangs off. 3. Apply butter to the outside of both bread slices. 4. Place cheese sandwiches into the air fryer basket and air fry for 7 minutes. Flip sandwiches and air fry for another 3-4 minutes. 5. The sandwich is done when it reaches your preferred shade of golden brown and crispness. Enjoy!

How Watching Reality Shows

Can Give You Insight into Humanity by M E G A N TAY L O R

Reality shows - you either love them or you hate them. A reality show is a program that documents unscripted life situations, families, people, etc. They are supposedly showcasing a group of people’s day-to-day interactions or how they handle certain scenarios. For example, Survivor has been on the air since 2000. It features a group of contestants trying to survive on an island, similar to a deserted island, work together as teams, complete challenges, and ultimately, win a million dollars. Survivor is just one of the multiple reality shows that are, or have been, on the air. Other shows are based on cooking, dating, racing around the world, modeling, trying to get investors to support your business, and so much more. In fact, Candid Camera is said to be the first reality T.V. show, premiering in 1948. No matter what your opinion is on this type of program, there is one thing for sure - you can learn a good deal about humanity by watching them.

can’t capture all the spontaneous and candid moments. Some conversations are recreated and filmed multiple times from different angles. The lesson here? Take reality shows with a grain of salt and don’t compare your life to what you see. Yes, some of the things do actually happen and some don’t. More happens behind the camera than you will ever see or know. •

Have some type of plan, path, or strategy for your life. There are things in life that require our dedication. Reality shows teach us that there are times you need to have a strategy and plan, but also be flexible. See what needs to be done, get organized, and go from there. A lot can happen if you are committed to “making it work.”

It is important to understand cultures, backgrounds, and experiences different from your own. Breaking out of your comfort zone and daily routines can sometimes be the best thing for you. It gives you a chance to learn about those around you and their lifestyles. The world has so much to offer in terms of people, culture, and ideas. The Amazing Race is a good example of how people gain so much just by learning about others. On the other hand, you can also learn about the inequalities in the world and how you can make a change.

One of the most important and valuable lessons that we can learn from reality shows is that there are many different personalities, leadership styles, and interpersonal dynamics in one group of people. The majority of people will meet these various styles during their lifetime. The main thing is to be respectful, non-judgemental, and help others as much as you can without giving up who you are or creating conflict with others.

Through a reality show, a participant can discover more about themselves, their goals, their strengths, and their weaknesses. As for viewers, we can realize those truths as well. However, we are also given the opportunity to see the bigger picture about the interactions between humans and learn many valuable lessons, such as the ones below. •

First, be your authentic self. As seen on reality shows, participants put it all out there and aren’t ashamed of who they are or who they are trying to impress. This applies to reality, as well. Be yourself and at the end of the day, you’ll be glad you did.

Reality shows don’t truly give you an exact representation of reality. Of course, there are reality show situations that every day humans aren’t put in without their choosing, i.e. Amazing Race, Big Brother, etc. However, some reality shows do show the viewers their lives, such as Sister Wives, Jon and Kate Plus Eight, and The Kardashians. But, are these shows exactly portraying reality? Not all the time. Cameras and film crews

Reality shows are fun to watch. People are glued to them and want to see what happens next. While they can be filled with drama and competition, reality shows can sometimes be meaningful and give us a little insight into how to be a better human being.

Tips for

SURVIVING

the Holidays by E L I S A W A L L A C E C O P P E D E

For many, the holiday season can bring a mix of emotions. For those who are in happy, thriving relationships with wonderful family dynamics, it can be an enjoyable time for all to reconvene. Yet, for many others, this is a time of anxiety and pressure. First comes the constant barrage of questions: So [insert name here] when are you going to find time to settle down and get yourself a husband? [Insert name here], isn’t it time for you and [insert name here] to go ahead and have those kiddies? Next, comes the rebirth of arguments from family members who can’t seem to get over “that one time that family member did that thing.” While this is supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year,” for many, it is a roller coaster of content, then depressing feelings. Sometimes when we see family members, we revert to old childhood patterns which may hurt us and remind us of challenging times. Even if we think we had worked through these patterns, they just can’t seem to stop popping back up. While depression can occur during any time of year, the stress and anxiety during the months of November and December may cause even those who are usually content to experience loneliness and a lack of fulfillment. On top of the influx of feelings, the holidays are known to be a heavy drinking season. When attending parties, especially if one is already feeling upset, many tend to “overindulge.” This leads to the snowball effect of feeling depressed. Feeling anxious already at the thought of this season? Rather than simply “grin and bear it,” there are numerous coping methods to overcome holiday anxiety and depression. Read on for five tips for all to ease the barrage that this joyous season can instantly bring.

TIP #1: ROUTINE, ROUTINE, ROUTINE! Yes, this season brings on countless schedule changes. However, if you can stick to your normal routine of, at least, exercise, this can help alleviate the anxiety this season supplies. Do you normally go running in the morning? Set out on a new trail when traveling for a holiday family visit. Yoga on Wednesdays? Continue by attending a new yoga studio. Lucky for all. there are plenty of exercise-on-the-go apps that allows you to attend gym classes everywhere!

TIP #2: DO ALL “IN MODERATION.” Yes, of course, all should be encouraged to drink in moderation, but what about the other activities that this season brings. From shopping to decorating to eating, we all should strive to not go overboard. Rather than get each of your siblings a gift, think about doing a “Secret Santa” raffle where you only must shop for one sibling. Wanting to decorate the entire outside of your home in lights? Don’t. This not only is a huge electric bill, but there is something stylish of the simple classic wreath. Love the sweets that the holiday parties provide? Rather than enjoying them all, pick one and enjoy after a healthy dinner.

66 | ForsythWoman.com

TIP #3: TIME FOR SOME NEW TRADITIONS! If you go to one relative’s house every year which seems to bring on stress, try switching it up. You could do this by either inviting them to your home or asking another family member to host. The new location can be beneficial if closer to where you live, as well as bring new, happier memories.

TIP #4: GIVE UP UNNECESSARY SOCIETAL EXPECTATIONS.

According to the WebMD article, “Home for the Holidays,” there is no need to fill certain roles. “There’s a lot of cultural pressure during the holidays,” the article states. “We tend to compare ourselves with these idealized notions of perfect families and perfect holidays.” If you have negative feelings, don’t try to reject them. Remember that there’s nothing wrong or shameful about feeling down during the holidays.

TIP #5: STAY CONNECTED. It is vital to stay in touch with those family and friends who love you during this stressful time. Make sure to leave time to spend with those who value you. If they don’t live close by, call them for a “reality check” or some “grounding.” Remember to ask for support if you need it.

Considering Non-Invasive Cosmetic Treatments?

Consider This...

A non-invasive cosmetic treatment provider’s work is where art meets science, and not everyone offering these services is created equally. BY MARISA FAIRCLOTH, PA-C It’s my opinion that the best providers for injectables and other medical spa treatments have years of experience and are rarely motivated by the bottom dollar. That’s why the staff at Restoration MedSpa is composed of highly trained artists who understand anatomy and facial balancing. We are in the business of building confidence and we want every patient to leave our practice feeling great about what they see when they look in the mirror. Our goal is to exceed expectations and create

loyal customers!

So, how do we do it? We start by asking the right questions. Our goal is to make sure we understand your needs, wants, and aspirations … whatever has brought you to our practice. I tell my patients “I am happy when you are happy”. Often patients come to us with requests in mind about specific devices or treatments without having knowledge of what produces the best results. We can help you shape your goals to ensure you get the best possible outcome. Not every face can support huge lips, especially people with a smaller face and petite features. It is never a good idea to treat one feature without considering the impact on the entire face. Facial enhancements should do just that — enhance — not detract from your overall look. We want to build your confidence and give you the best results. That’s one of the reasons our patients trust us to ensure the best possible advice and outcomes. They also know we stay ahead of the latest aesthetic technologies and innovations — which can be impossible for 68 | ForsythWoman.com

a plastic surgeon or dermatologist with a busy practice. We don’t just “follow the fads” and jump on everything new. We first research industry trends and technologies to determine what new treatments are worthwhile before rolling anything out to our customers.

It’s not just about devices. We conduct the same type of due diligence when it comes to new off-label and innovative uses for products like PDO Threads. When a new, complex method for using threads for non-invasive facelifting comes along, I evaluate the safety and effectiveness of these techniques to ensure our interested clients always experience the best possible results.

WHAT’S NEW?

When it comes to devices like CoolSculpting® Elite and CoolTone® I search for every possible type of enhancement to ensure our body sculpting outcomes are better than any competitors’. That could be by ensuring our team gets thorough extensive training, or it could be (as in the case of CoolSculpting), bringing in a post-treatment massage with a secondary device that enhances the typical treatment.

In the case of the new triLift device, Restoration MedSpa was one of the first practices to provide it — but only after months of careful evaluation, training, and research. Before rolling it out to our patients, we wanted to make sure that the “hype met the reality”. The treatment’s three elements — dynamic muscle stimulation, radiofrequency, and radiofrequency micro-needling — cover every aspect of what we see in

natural aging. triLift is a first-in-class device — being the first ever to incorporate muscle stimulation along with skin tightening. We began offering it only after we were sure that the promised “trifecta” was true and that triLift actually delivers long-lasting improvement in skin texture, quality, volume and lift. Our patients are finding that not only is triLift providing improvement in signs of aging, such as jawline sagging and loss of skin tone, but is effective for “pre-juvenation” by increasing skin and muscle quality and preventing those issues from occurring.

Energy devices and lasers have quickly become popular

treatments for smoothing skin and managing unwanted body hair. It’s very important to note, however, that all lasers aren’t right for every body, and certain guidelines need to be followed to insure safe and effective treatments. Our skincare experts are experienced in all types of laser procedures, ensuring that our patients always get the best possible results.

A great device for building confidence is the MiraDry

treatment for reducing sweat and odor while also removing hair. Our skilled providers can help you determine whether MiraDry might be a good option for your needs.

If you’re ready to explore treatment options that are right for you, schedule your complimentary consultation today with the only BBB Torch Award recipient provider in the region at 336.999.8295. Join us at one of our two open houses on

CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP: PERFECT FOR A CHILLY NOVEMBER DAY! b y TA N N E R J O H N S O N Now that November has rolled around, the temperatures are dropping more and more, and there’s not much better than warm stews and soups for this time of year. I’ll give you guys a break from all of the turkey recipes for something a lot more flavorful in my opinion! This soup is really easy to make, very versatile in what toppings you can add to it and what you can serve it with. It is now on our regular rotation for soup season. INGREDIENTS: (FOR SERVING 4 P E O P L E O R 2 W/ L E F TO V E R S ) • 2 Chicken Breasts (boneless) • 1 can crushed tomatoes • 1 box (32oz) Chicken Broth • 1 can Black Beans (drained and rinsed) • 1 can of corn (drained and rinsed) • 1 small can of hatch green chiles • 1 red (or any color) bell pepper (diced) • 1 tbsp Olive Oil • 1 (or ½) chopped white onion • 2 tbsp minced garlic • 1 (de-seeded & diced) jalapeno • ½ Cup chopped cilantro • Juice of 1 lime • 1 packet of taco seasoning of your choice (I use Fire & Smoke Society taco seasoning) • Salt to taste INSTRUCTIONS: • Heat dutch oven or a large pot over medium/high heat • Add Onion, Garlic, all of the peppers/ chiles. Cook and stir often until softened and onion is translucent

70 | ForsythWoman.com

• Add chicken breasts, corn, beans, tomatoes, taco seasoning, salt, half of the cilantro, & chicken broth • Bring to a light boil, then simmer for about 25-30 minutes • Take chicken out, shred up with two forks, or utensil of choice. Add chicken back into the pot and let it cook for another 5 minutes at medium heat • Serve soup in a bowl with your favorite toppings! You can’t go wrong with some fresh avocado slices, jalapenos, some shredded cheddar cheese and then the other half of the cilantro for garnish. Tortilla strips or tortilla chips are a good option for some crunch too.

Easy Does it this Holiday Season by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N

Smack dab in the middle of a stifling and humid July day, I decided not to go home for the holidays. Home... picture postcard perfect New England covered in a light blanket of snow and filled with Norman Rockwell-esque good cheer. Or something close. Even so, with Jingle Bells in the air, warm fires, and a much-loved family to welcome me, I decided to forego the annual holiday trip home. I quickly texted my sister, explaining that what I most wanted was to spend time with the people who have shaped and filled my life for as long as I can remember. I wanted less frivolity and more listening. Less jolly and more genuine. Less running about, and more tranquility. I wanted to grab a peaceful, leisurely lunch out before the super-charged holiday crowds would make getting a table difficult. She got it. Immediately. How about you? Are you stressing over the season that is just around the corner? I don’t want that in my life anymore, and so I’ve culled a three-part “Easy Does It” strategy for the season:

PART ONE: PLANNING

Plan ahead – as in start right now. Think in terms of pacing yourself and doing a little at a time. Make a holiday spreadsheet or buy a pretty notebook and brainstorm categories such as: • Where you will spend the holidays • Gift list and budget • Holiday hosting, menus, and recipes • Traditions to keep, refresh, or put on hold • Decorating scheme/purchases to be made • Calls to make; cards to send And so on. Focus where you need to and begin to “calendar” your prep tasks. For example, you might visit the attic or the garage and begin pulling the decorations you will use this year, then consign, donate, or store those you won’t. I do this every year, right after Halloween.

PART TWO: NURTURING •

Create a holiday calm space - Maybe it’s just a corner in your sunroom, or your she-shed; a place where you can catch your breath and take in the beauty of the season privately and quietly. Fill this space, however tiny or large with the holiday decorations you most

72 | ForsythWoman.com

enjoy. In a small reading room, my sister displays our late mom’s 1960s ceramic tree and ornaments handmade by her children and grandchildren. Take care of yourself - Timeless counsel, I know. And now, during the holidays, it’s important to continue those healthy body, mind, and spirit practices so that you can be present to the joys of the season. If you need a tiny nudge, do your workout, then reward yourself with something you truly enjoy.

PART THREE: LIVING IT •

Make friends with imperfection – unlike that picture-perfect postcard, few things in real life are in fact perfect. Perfect doesn’t matter. Remember that you cannot control everything and that it is the intention, the love, and the joy you infuse in your holiday experience that matters. Practice “In the scheme of things” thinking – when you do start to fret, catch yourself and tap into perspective. Ask: “In the scheme of things, how much will this really matter?” Be willing to graciously go with the flow when the unexpected happens. Lean into kindness – people may have a short fuse and frazzled nerves as they navigate the season. Tap into the fact that you can relate and cut them some slack! Practice respect and tolerance – sure, it’s a whole lot easier when the people you love and care about hold the same beliefs, views, and approach to the holidays. But that’s generally not the case. I’m having a flashback from the year my stepson brought home his thengirlfriend who insisted on bringing her own food. After a moment of thinking “What? Is she just trying to be contrary?” I suspended judgment, took a deep breath and remembered how grateful I was that they chose to join us. Easy does it!

Rolfing: A Different Kind of Bodywork by C A N D I C E D E A L

Dr. Ida Rolf pioneered the research and development of bodywork named after her. Rolfing Structural Integration is a type of bodywork that focuses on the fascia, the deep layers of the connective tissue throughout the body and how the body moves as a unit. Dr. Rolf was a biochemist and a Fellow in organic chemistry at the Rockefeller Institute. She began this journey into tissue manipulation and healing because of her and her own children’s health issues. She believed those issues were due to imbalances in the body that were affected by gravity, and that the imbalances could be reversed. She devoted her life to this research and opened the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute in 1971 in Boulder, Colorado. Since then, the institute has spread worldwide. Practitioners, called Rolfers, study the bodywork over the course of one to two years to become an accredited Rolfer. To date there are over 2,000 practicing Rolfers worldwide. The foundation of the Rolfing Structural Integration is a process called the Ten-Series. There are ten sessions with a Rolfer. This is a standard in Rolfing that enables the Rolfer to work on specific sections of the body. Within the Ten-Series, there are three units. The first unit is focused on what is referred to as the “sleeve” and it contains three sessions working on loosening but balancing the connective tissues. The first session is focused on improving your breath, through work on the arms, ribcage, and diaphragm. It will also work to open the tissues around your upper legs, the hamstrings, and the entire spine. The second unit is referred to as the “core” and it focuses on balancing the support of the core of the body with four sessions. Session four starts at the inside the arches of the feet, up the legs, to the base of the pelvis. The fifth session works on balancing the surface and deep abdominal muscles to the curve of the

74 | ForsythWoman.com

back. Session six seeks to gain more support and momentum from the legs, pelvis, and lower back, while session seven focuses its full attention on the neck and head. The third and final unit of the Ten-Unit is all about integration. In sessions eight and nine, the Rolfer will determine how best to achieve the integration, as the protocol is unique for everyone - no two bodies are the same. The tenth and final session is focused on integration, order, and balance. Fascia can re-pattern itself after an injury or with repetitive muscle use and can cause restrictions in the body; the tissues that make up the fascia can change in viscosity, size, or pattern and this is what creates the restriction that can sometimes itself be painful. These restrictions can lead to a change in posture, that leads to a change in range of motion that creates an unhealthy pattern in the body over time. Rolfing works to unravel these issues by working to release the fascia restriction and restore function to the body. Before I experienced Rolfing for myself, I had heard that it was extremely painful, but being

as curious as I am about different modalities of bodywork, it did not scare me away from trying it. I would equate the painful moments to that of deep tissue massage, but Rolfing is certainly not massage and you will not find yourself asleep on the table. During my Rolfing sessions, I was asked to walk up and down the length of the room towards and away from the Rolfer so that she could evaluate my movements after working on each section of my body. At times, I laughed because I felt as though part of the office was a runway as many jaunts as I took. But this was very intuitive and made a lot of sense when really looking for improvement in the body and how the body moved as a unit through space. Many athletes who repetitively use the same muscles in movement, take rough hits to the body or become injured, have had success with the Rolfing method. However, anyone who repetitively works on the keyboard, has had a bad fall, or plays a sport for fun can benefit from the Rolfing method. There are Rolfers available in Winston-Salem (Winston Rolfing), Greensboro (Carolina Rolfing Associates, Inc.), and High Point (vitality Rolfing).

LEAD GIRLS

is Working to Build Our Community Leaders of the Future

Since LEAD Girls of NC was founded in Winston-Salem in 2015, the nonprofit has focused on providing the programs, tools and resources that at-risk middle-school girls need to become active leaders in their communities. Each year, more than 300 girls in Forsyth County engage with LEAD, which stands for Learning Everyday Accomplishing Dreams, through the organization’s in-school curriculum delivered in partnership with local middle schools as well as weekend and summer programming and special events. LEAD founder and executive director Joy Nelson Thomas and her staff of trained facilitators work with school and community leaders along with parents to design programs that address emerging opportunities and current challenges. For example, earlier this fall, LEAD launched a pilot STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) program to fuel the girls’ interests in this growing field. The initial curriculum focuses on Engineering with future programs planned for other STEAM components. “Our STEAM activities are always very popular with our LEAD participants, so it made sense to dig deeper into that interest with this new pilot program,” said Thomas. “We want the girls to not only have exposure to STEAM topics but begin to envision how they might pursue this field beyond high school.” Participants will visit local colleges as well as employers to learn more about the many facets of STEAM happening right here in the Triad. The annual LEAD Expo, held every October, is an opportunity for the girls to engage with female leaders in our community. A highlight of the two-day

event is the Saturday lunch where community volunteers lead table discussions. Véronique George, director of marketing & communications for the City of Winston-Salem and founder & owner of The VLG Groupe, served as a first-time table leader. “I love spending time with the girls to learn about their aspirations and offer suggestions to help them accomplish them.” Recent table leaders included Chelsie Hart-Smith, editor of Triad Voice Magazine; Kara Peters, television news reporter with WXII; Forsyth County District Court Judge Carrie Vickery; Dr. Cleo Morrison, assistant professor at Winston-Salem State University; and Tonya McDaniel, member of the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. “It’s important that the girls have these small group interactions with women who have propelled themselves to these positions of community leadership,” said Thomas. “We want the girls to feel seen and heard by these inspiring female leaders and have the opportunity to ask questions about their personal journeys.” Nikita Wallace, CEO of Winston-Salem Fashion Week, is a long-time LEAD volunteer. She has served as a table leader during the Expo and also plays an integral role in LEAD’s popular Fashion Entrepreneurship Summer Program. “Every summer, I am blown away by the creativity and business savvy of the summer participants,” she said. “Not only are they designing great pieces from items sourced at Goodwill, but they are also building business plans to put their ideas into practice.” Thomas said all of LEAD’s programs build toward helping the girls develop the confidence, social skills and leadership abilities needed to become independent, financially stable women. “At LEAD, our motto is ‘Change a girl. Change a community. Change the world.’,” she said. “As we follow up with the girls once they age out of LEAD, we see that change taking place and we know our community will be better and stronger because of their involvement with our programs.” Zha’Nyia Bryant Jones is a former LEAD participant and current engineering major at North Carolina A&T University. She credits LEAD with fueling her interests. Jones also gives back as a LEAD fellow during the summers. “LEAD has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey towards pursuing engineering,” said Bryant Jones. “Through the program, I discovered my passion for STEM and gained the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this field. The support and connections I developed during my time as a LEAD participant gave me the confidence to pursue a future career in engineering. As a LEAD fellow, I was able to contribute to the program pathway, enabling me to give back and help others embark on their own transformative journeys in the world of engineering and technology.” To learn more about supporting LEAD Girls as a volunteer or donor, visit Leadgirls.org

Military Dogs and Handlers by V O N D A H E N D E R S O N

Dogs may be known as man’s best friend, but the relationship of a military dog and his handler goes far beyond that concept. It is a relationship built on partnership and forged in intense training. Their dependence on each other is a 24/7 relationship; their lives depend on that trust. Dogs have long been part of the military from ancient times forward. In the US, military dogs have participated in some fashion in every war. In World War I, Sergeant Stubby was a mascot with the 102nd infantry, Yankee Division; however, he was actually smuggled into the battle zone. Stubby was credited with detecting deadly gases, warning of nearby enemy soldiers, and locating wounded men on the battlefields. He set the bar high for the future of military dogs. During World War II, a war dog named Chips, a German Shepherd, Collie, Siberian Husky mix, captured 14 enemy soldiers in one day. Chips was the most decorated dog in World War II. The first airborne dog jumped with British paratroopers on D-Day. During this war, military leaders finally recognized the value of military dogs and the contributions they could make. In recent years, Cairo, a Belgian Malinois, was part of the SEAL team who located Bin Ladin. Lucca, a German Shepherd, was awarded the highest medal the USMC could bestow on a military dog for her service; she completed over 400 bomb detection missions in Iraq and Afghanistan with no loss of human life. Currently, there are approximately 2,500 actively serving military dogs with 700 deployed on overseas assignments. The Department of Defense Working Dog Training School is housed at Lackland Air Force Base where an average of 1,000 dogs work in various stages of training based on their natural abilities of focus or aggression. Like

78 | ForsythWoman.com

other intense military training programs, the drop out rate is high; about half of the dogs wash out of the program. What are the qualifications for a military dog? Currently, about 85 percent of the US military dogs are bred in Germany or the Netherlands; their bloodlines are rooted in military service. A potential military dog must have no physical issues, must be highly reward motivated, and must be able and willing to follow commands. A candidate must have a balance between aggression and excitement, and must not be too submissive or too strong-willed. The dog must enjoy working with humans and be well socialized. They must be adaptable, as most of them will work with more than one handler during their military careers. Some of the most prevalent breeds that do well in the military environment include German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, and Belgian Malinois. Military dogs may specialize as scouts, sentries, or detection operators. The average success rate for a fully trained bomb detection dog is 98 percent. Many on active duty work with a price on their heads; their skills are that well known by enemy forces. Military dogs who give their lives in service to our country have their own honor ceremony. Their food bowl is ceremoniously turned upside down, their leash and collar are hung up, and their kennel door is left open. In many services the poem, Guardians of the Night is read. The poem’s author is unknown, but certainly, the writer had a love and respect for dogs whose job it is to protect and serve; it is a beautiful tribute. The poem’s opening stanza is “Trust in me my Friend for I am your comrade. I will protect you with my last breath when all others have left you and the loneliness of the night closes in, I will be at your side.” Sources: Dogster.com, barkpost.com, military.com

A Rekindled by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N “Psychological research from around the world shows that having social connections is one of the most reliable predictors of a long, healthy, and satisfying life.” “A review of 38 studies found that adult friendships, especially high-quality ones that provide social support and companionship, significantly predict well-being and can protect against mental health issues such as depression and anxiety—and those benefits persist across the life span.” “You’ve got mail.” No kidding. And I’m not referring to the virtual type. It’s the handful I dutifully retrieve from my physical mailbox six days a week. Even with online banking and the near extinction of the handwritten letter, I still get lots of stuff, most of which goes from my fingertips to the recycle trash can, pronto! That said, on one otherwise unremarkable trek up the driveway to the mailbox, my eye was immediately drawn to a small envelope, addressed to me. It looked like a card and the handwriting was ever so vaguely familiar. Shifting this mysterious missive to the top of the ho-hum pile of stuff, I quickly went inside to open it. Turning it over, I immediately

recognized the return address. No way! Where has “V” been all of these years and is it possible that she still lives there? I couldn’t get that envelope ripped open fast enough. And at the same time, a small feeling of dread held me back. Something bad has happened; it must be. Why reach out after all of these years? I could not have been more pleased to be so dead wrong. “Where have you been? I have been looking for you everywhere and should have sought you out on LinkedIn before I deleted my account. You have been on my mind for so long and I really want to reconnect.” And so it went. I was thrilled that she had found me and equally eager to reconnect. We had met at our very first jobs after college and had quickly become fast friends. We shared an office – and the trials and tribulations of our first “professional” jobs for 13 months. We were each other’s lunch mate and, not long thereafter, each other’s bridesmaid. But things changed. We found other jobs and our lives went in different directions. For one thing, she promptly had children, and I never did. The last time I saw “V” was in 1992, when she and her husband attended my second wedding. I had things to do, but instead, paused in the full emotion of the present to consider this gift of a letter which completely blindsided me. More than anything, I was struck by the feeling that “V was still V.” It came through in her heartfelt, unabashedly candid tone and the sincerity of her desire to rekindle our friendship. My heart was in charge of this one, so I called the number she had included in her letter. I caught “V” in the Sarasota airport, awaiting a flight back home to Connecticut. She had been visiting a friend who was coping with the illness of her husband and had gone to comfort her. We talked non-stop, on top of one another – a feat my dear husband claims only women are capable of – until her row was called. I learned in those 67 minutes that while our lives were quite different, we were, in the most important ways, the same. She, with her heart on her sleeve, and disarmingly candid about everything, and I, pensive, thoughtful, and probing. Most will say that during the COVID pandemic, humankind was painfully reminded of how sustained connection with those we love and care about is the true heartbeat of our days and essential to our well-being. We know this to be true not because “the science” tells us so – although it does – but because we feel it in our lived experience, regardless of age or the passage of time. I’ve been a bit giddy since “V” reached out to me. And this time, we will keep that flame of friendship alive and well in the present. Did someone say “Virtual Happy Hour”? It’s a great place to start!

Celebrating the Power of Recycling on

“America Recycles Day!” by E L I S A W A L L A C E C O P P E D E

This November 15th, the nation will celebrate a holiday dedicated to bringing awareness to the power of recycling. This holiday is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Annually held on and around November 15th, “America Recycles Day” (ARD) “educates and encourages individuals on how to be more mindful of what they consume, where and how to properly recycle, and to pledge to recycle more and recycle right in their everyday lives,” the Keep America Beautiful foundation reports. By focusing on individual actions, versus group actions, the day highlights individual actions each person can take to address the challenges facing our nation’s recycling system. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, recycling has and will continue to contribute to American prosperity and the protection of our environment. “The recycling rate has increased from less than seven percent in 1960,” the website reports, “to the current rate of 3%.” An EPA study also found that activities centered around recycling/reusing has accounted for “681,000 jobs and $37.8 billion in wages” within the United States alone. That also accounts for “$5.5 billion in tax revenues, which all equates to 1.17 jobs for every 1,000 tons of materials recycled.” A few of the other impressive benefits of recycling include reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, conserving natural resources (water, minerals, timber), preventing pollution

by reducing the need to mine raw materials, saving energy and creating new jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industry. While all this information is impressive, it is vital to understand that not all recycling is “good recycling.” There is a specific method that one should take to recycle the right way. There are certain items that can be recycled, and some that are not. According to the EPA, there are ten main items that one can recycle, including: cardboard, paper, food boxes, mail, beverage cans, food cans, glass and plastic bottles, jars, jugs, and plastic bottle caps. There are also a few items that can be recycled, just not put in the city’s blue recycling bin. This includes plastic bags & wraps, electronics, and textiles. Last year, on November 15th, President Biden made a proclamation regarding “America Recycles Day.” Within his proclamation, the President stated, “While we know its benefits, recycling is at a crossroads today in many parts of this country.” He continued, “Too many Americans are uncertain about what materials can or should be recycled.” With this said, the federal government has issued a strategy guide to help educate individuals on “recyclingbest strategies.” According to the EPA, there are a few ways that we all can “shop smarter,” when it comes to buying materials that are easily recyclable, as well as kind to our environment. First off, the agency focuses on the idea of “thinking green” before you go shopping. When out shopping, it is important to ask yourself a few questions, including: Do I truly need this? Will I use this? Can I borrow this item from someone else? Finally, can I fix the same item I have at home, instead of buying a new one? With terrifying statistics from the EPA, like, “42% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are associated with the energy used to produce, process, transport and dispose of goods,” it is easy to understand how as a nation, we are truly at a cross-road. We must decide to either change the way we consume items day-to-day, or sadly let our children bear the burden of our mistakes. This November 15th, take the pledge to take a close, critical look at your own “Carbon Footprint,” and take the strides you can to be kinder to our environment through recycling and reusing. The end goal of “America Recycles Day” is for us not to only recycle for one day, but to make a conscious plan to improve our recycling and reusing habits throughout the year.

IT’S BEGINNING TO SOUND A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS...

ALWAYS Save the Turkey by G E N E V I E V E C O N D O N I remember it like it was yesterday - the first Thanksgiving that I volunteered to help cook. My culinary skills have improved over the years, but this was a time when cooking just wasn’t my thing. My mother prepped the turkey and dropped it off at my house with detailed instructions on when and how to put it in. This was the extent that I was allowed to help. I was notorious for burning water. I still don’t know why my mother trusted me with the turkey. Perhaps since she prepped it and all I had to do was place it in the oven nothing could possibly go wrong.

Thanksgiving was saved that year and we had a nice laugh around the table talking about my culinary mishap.

Ha. Ha.

She proudly sits at the table rattling off her recipe as everyone secretly shovels the food to the family dog who does, indeed, love Aunt Susie’s stuffing.

Once the turkey was placed in the oven, my daughter and I went about our morning watching the parade as we always did. When all of a sudden.. What’s that smell? Is that smoke? Before I knew it the house began to fill with smoke and all the fire alarms were blaring in our ears. I sprang into action and got my daughter and dog out of the house. All I remember amongst the chaos was my daughter yelling “Momma! Save the turkey!” I can look back on this and laugh now. I remember, though, the feeling of pure panic. If I ruined the turkey, I feared I would single handedly have ruined Thanksgiving. Thankfully, I only used a too shallow pan to put the turkey in and grease had dripped onto the oven. A rookie mistake. When the smoke cleared, the turkey was indeed saved and put into a bigger pan.

90 | ForsythWoman.com

It makes me think about how much we juggle on Thanksgiving. Getting up early to put the turkey in to feed a crowd - who has decided to forgo any food until the meal is ready (talk about pressure!) and dreading the stuffing that your great Aunt Susie is going to bring that no one likes, but everyone eats and raves about how good it is.

Thanksgiving isn’t really about the food (okay - maybe a little bit) or the endless amounts of dishes and hours on your aching feet you spend to prepare a meal and ensure it comes out hot and on time. It’s about the family. The laughter around the too small table that precariously sits people all crammed together. The rubbing elbows, passing of food, and the thousand conversations that all seem to overlap each other. It’s about the unbuttoned pants and football games, as you wait for the coveted turkey sandwich from leftovers. Thanksgiving is about family, the ones that are here and those that have passed on, blessing our lives, and making sure that through even the most chaotic of events, that the turkey is saved. So, as you strategically plan your Thanksgiving holiday, worry how it all will get done, and already feel your back and feet beginning to ache, remember that you’re not just creating a wonderful meal, you’re creating memories. And at the end of the day, no matter what happens, always save the turkey!

Who doesn’t love a home away from home? As the holiday season sweeps in, many families will begin making plans to welcome overnight and out-of-town guests into their homes. Whether it’s close friends or family members coming to stay, it’s nice to create a welcoming space that makes them feel comfortable. Here are some simple tips and inexpensive touches that can make your home not only impressive to your guests, but a space they will appreciate and love.

MAKE THEM FEEL WELCOME

More often than not, overnight guests or those staying a prolonged time have been arranged with advanced notice, therefore, make sure to create their accommodations ahead of time, too. You don’t want to make them feel like an inconvenience by first moving things around your home to make room for them once they arrive. Thinking about simple things like the number of people coming and how much luggage they may be bringing can help you make arrangements. Asking your guests what kind of dietary restrictions they have or what type of coffee or tea they like ahead of time to keep in the house also ensures they feel welcome.

ADD SMALL COMFORTS

Whether you have a guest room with a bed or are offering a pull-out couch, be sure to have freshly cleaned sheets ready for your new arrival. A seasonal candle with some matches nearby or a soft throw blanket draped across a chair are simple ways to make a space feel more welcoming. Additionally, you can create a drawer or a container of items that may come in handy that your guests may forget at home. Ideas can include travel sized toiletries left from a hotel stay, over-the-counter medicine, grooming items and even a nice new pair of slipper socks.

PROVIDE ALL NEED-TO-KNOW INFO UPFRONT

If you have pets, let your guests know ahead of time. Keep some Benadryl or Claritin nearby in the event your guest has allergies to your furry friend. If you have a dog or cat that tends to shed a lot, keeping a lint brush available will be appreciated. Do you have a home alarm they need to be made aware of? Provide a guest code if they will be coming and going from the home without you, and make sure they know how to access the alarm. Of course, who could forget the most commonly asked question when guests arrive: “What’s your WiFi password?” Leaving a small frame or note where they are staying is a much-appreciated gesture.

GIVE THEM A LITTLE SPACE

We’re not talking about the size of the space in which they are staying, but something pretty important. When you are staying in someone else’s home, no matter how close you may be, people tend to like their privacy. Make sure not to bother your guests by checking in too frequently. Let them know from the beginning that if they need anything, to ask, and remind yourself that they will come to you on their own. If you don’t have a separate guest room, try to still steer clear of the area they are staying and let other family members in the house try to as well. Remember, while having house guests can be fun it can be a little hectic with more people in the house. Just try to have things put in place ahead of time and enjoy the extra time with your guests and make them feel as welcome as you can.

Conversations with Your BFF What I Wish I’d Known in My Teenage Years by R E B E C C A C O O P E R

ask yourself, ‘Will I be stressed about this in 3 weeks? 3 months? How about 3 years?’ Nine out of 10 times, the answer will be, ‘No, it won’t matter!’ Get distance between you and the problem and you’ll see it clearer.

FAILURE HAPPENS, PICK YOURSELF UP AND MOVE ON!

I had a teacher once tell me, ‘If you didn’t fail, how would you know and appreciate success?’ Put another way, there is no path to success that doesn’t include failure. Tweak your understanding of failure and success will be that much sweeter.

STAY PRESENT AND DON’T LIVE IN THE FUTURE…IT’S NOT GUARANTEED!

I lived every minute of high school wanting to get out! I loved school and learning, but I wanted to get to college, meet the man of my dreams, and get on with life because I didn’t think I was participating in life then, but I was. Those were precious days to be taken in and enjoyed. Life is really good at convincing us the next season in life is better than this one. I wish I’d known that is a lie, because the next season doesn’t exist and you aren’t guaranteed tomorrow. You have today, so cherish it!

I NEED TO KNOW NOW WHAT JOB I’M GOING TO HAVE

When I turned 50, I had a real heart to heart with myself and thought about things I wished I’d known in my teen years. I often fall into the ‘I wish I could go back and know what I know now…I’d do everything different’ mode and it’s never good. If I knew people really didn’t have my best interests, I would’ve stayed away from them; if I’d known certain people were just pretending to be my friends, I would’ve cut them loose long before I did - you get the idea. So, what are some things I wish I’d known earlier in life, that unfortunately had to come from experience? I am so glad I just asked myself!

HOW MUCH DO PEOPLE REALLY THINK OF YOU?

Dr. Phil once said, “If you really knew how little people thought of you, you wouldn’t care so much about what they think.” Basically, you don’t take up as much space in people’s thoughts as you think you do. We suffer more in our own imagination than we do in reality.

WHAT AM I REALLY SUPPOSED TO TAKE AWAY FROM SCHOOL?

You can get bogged down in learning and not realize much of the purpose of school. I remember going into panic mode when the latest algebra class just didn’t sink in as I thought it should. Looking back, I think school, especially high school, was more about building character than memorizing the periodic tables. You develop your own work ethic in school, your core values develop, what you place value on comes into focus… you often become the you that you’ll spend your life with during high school.

TAKING THE VIEW FROM 3000 FEET GIVES YOU PERSPECTIVE Lots of the struggles we experience can be made better by looking at it from 3000 feet, figuratively. Remove yourself and try to gain an objective perspective and

In the eleventh grade, I recall talking to my guidance counselor and projecting myself into my 20s, trying to pinpoint exactly what I would do with my life. To say I was stressed is an understatement. I didn’t want to ever disappoint my parents, so I put a lot of pressure on myself. I wish I had known to let go of the desire to have every minute of life figured out.

STAY CLEAR OF THER PEOPLE’S DRAMA

There are some people who thrive on drama. I have had friends who say ‘I can’t stand all this drama in my life,’ yet most of it was brought on by themselves. I think life has more depth if you do not wallow in drama. Even if those around you have drama, you don’t have to participate. Be their support and let them know that you are there for them, although you don’t want to get dragged into the situation yourself. You can be there to talk, just not participate in the drama.
